Woman in Black 2 Angel of Death, The (2015)

The Woman In Black: Angel of DeathStarring Phoebe Fox, Jeremy Irvine, Helen McCrory, Oaklee Pendergast

Directed by Tom Harper

Words cannot describe how much I love the original 1989 British television adaptation of Susan Hill’s terrifying novel The Woman in Black. Simply put, it’s one of the single most frightening movies ever put together and well worth taking the time to seek out.

When the announcement came that Hammer of all studios was bringing the story to the screen again starring Daniel Radcliffe, I was elated. Then I saw it. Gone were the subtlety and bone-chilling moments found in the original film, and in their stead was a lot of CGI, which amounted to one giant overblown misfire. The flick made its money though, and a sequel quickly went into the works.

The Woman in Black 2 Angel of Death is directed by Tom Harper and written by Jon Croker from a story he co-wrote with author Susan Hill. Having Hill pen the continuation of her story made perfect sense, and as a result the first horror film of 2015 is indeed a winner. In fact, I like to look at it as a direct sequel to the 1989 flick as it has way more in common with that than it does with the 2012 telling.

In the movie we join the action forty years removed from the events of the original, smack dab in the thick of London during World War II. An orphanage has been evacuated, and its children and headmistresses have been moved to the delightfully dreary Eel Marsh House, unaware of the nefarious vengeful spectre who haunts its halls. It’s not long before the activity in the home stirs up its other-worldly inhabitants, and before you can say BOO!, the scares start piling up.

This is a classic horror film in every sense of the word and actually feels worthy of being called a Hammer movie. We’re talking classic Hammer through and through! The Woman in Black 2 Angel of Death is spooky, atmospheric, and genuinely scary. It’s a thinking person’s horror tale that doesn’t rely on cheap scares to keep audiences sweating. My only fear is that it may be too sophisticated for today’s dumbed down A.D.D.-driven audiences, but you know what? Screw ‘em.

The door is of course left open for a sequel, and if this film is any indication of where the now franchise is going, then we are all in with bells on! Looking for a good way to spend a cold winter’s night? A darkened theatre that offers a quick trip to Crythin Gifford’s Eel Marsh House is perfect for all of your shiver-inducing needs. Yep, 2015 is off to one hell of a start!

There aren’t many New Year’s horror movies, but one of the classics is without question New Year’s Evil. Speaking of which, Scream Factory has just unveiled the specs for its upcoming February 24th release.

Emmett Alston directs the flick, which stars Roz Kelly, Kip Niven, and Chris Wallace.

Synopsis:
New Year’s Eve is on its way, and TV’s most famous punk-rock lady icon Diane Sullivan is holding a late hour countdown celebration of music and partying. All is going well until Diane receives a phone call from an odd sounding stranger announcing on live television that when New Year’s strikes in each time zone, a ‘Naughty Girl’ will be murdered (punished), and the killer leaves a threat saying she will be the one to die last. The studio crew takes precautions and heightens security, but on the other side of America, a hospital nurse is found brutally butchered. Who could be behind these murders? A crazed fan, a religious psychotic, or perhaps it’s someone much closer to Diane than the police (or audience) could have ever expected.

  • Audio commentary with director Emmett Alston
  • The Making of New Year’s Evil documentary featuring new interviews with actors Kip Niven, Grant Cramer, and Taaffe O’Connell and director of photography Thomas Ackerman

Check Out Concept Art from Neill Blomkamp’s Planned Alien Sequel!

I think it’s pretty safe to say that nobody woke up this morning thinking they’d see concept art from a proposed Alien sequel, which is what makes this story such a wonderful little treat. Let’s kick off 2015 in style with a look at the badass film that almost was!

Director Neill Blomkamp, known for sci-fi gems District 9 and Elsyium, took to social media today to share several pieces of concept art from an Alien sequel he was at one point in time working on, apparently without the direct involvement of 20th Century Fox.

Was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though,” Blomkamp wrote on Instagram.Woulda rocked. Was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created.

This has nothing to do with the studio,” the director continued. I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work. They didn’t really even know I was working on it.”

Whipped up by a French artist, the pieces of concept art give us a small taste of Blomkamp’s vision, and it looks like the film was going to mark the return of both Ellen Ripley and Corporal Hicks. In the most interesting image, Ripley appears to be wearing a Xenomorph suit, which has me all sorts of interested in what he was going for here.

Check out the concept art below, which is surely going to whet your appetite for another Alien film!

Lance Henriksen and Briana Evigan Meet Up Monday at 11:01 A.M.

Lance Henriksen is consistently one of the busiest actors of them all, and thankfully for us, it’s frequently horror films that he lends his talents to. He’s got yet another one in the works, so read on for all the details!

From the Press Release:
Production has begun on the suspense thriller MONDAY AT 11:01 A.M., which stars Charles Agron (Dark House), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2 the Streets), Lance Henriksen (Aliens) and Lauren Shaw (Zero Dark Thirty). Harvey Lowry (Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage) directs from a script by Agron, who also produces through Charles Agron Productions. Guthrie, Oklahoma hosts the production, which is due for release in 2015.

Agron and Shaw are Michael and Jenny, a happy couple out for a blissful weekend in a picturesque resort town. While Jenny shops in a local boutique, Michael stops off at the local watering hole, where he meets a friendly bartender (Lance Henriksen) and a sexy temptress (Briana Evigan). Michael declines her overtures, but even stranger events take place in a local hotel – such as ghostly happenings in Suite 327, the sounds of violent lovemaking that only Michael can hear; and a cult of druid worshipers who suddenly emerge from the local forest and chase after Michael. Doing the smart thing, Michael and Jenny head out of town – only to discover that their only escape route – a mountain tunnel is blocked by the highway patrol.

A prolific producer and special effects makeup expert, Lowry recently directed the Civil War drama, Union Bound, which is due for release in 2015. In 2014, he produced Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage. Agron works on both sides of the camera. Prior to Monday at 11:01 A.M., he wrote and produced the horror thriller Dark House, again through Charles Agron Productions. He also co-starred as “Lucky.”

Lance Henriksen recently starred in the horror thriller Dark Awakening. Briana Evigan appears in the upcoming horror film Paranormal Island, which also stars Henriksen. Lauren Shaw stars opposite Elpidia Carrillo (Predator) in the thriller Relentless for 2015 release.

In the meantime…. eye candy, of the Evigan variety!

The Top 7 Most Terrifying Places on Earth

0
0

In The Houses October Built, our heroes are in search of the most extreme and terrifying haunted Halloween attractions they can possibly find. In honor of the Blu-ray and DVD release of the film this week, we’ve done some research of our own and sought out The Top 7 Most Terrifying Places on Earth.

Horror movies are one thing. We start them, cover our eyes when things get too scary, and after approximately 90 minutes, we’ve survived the experience. But reality is something else. Mother Earth is home to some insanely frightening places. We’ve spanned the globe to find some real doozies to bring you The 7 Most Terrifying Places on Earth.

Some honorable mentions (and believe us… just because they didn’t make the Top 7 list doesn’t mean you want to book a family vacation to these places) include The Door to Hell in Derweze, Ahal Province, Turkmenistan, where a fire has been burning for nearly 45 years; the Gomantong Caves in Borneo, Malaysia, which are absolutely loaded with guano, bats, and cockroaches; and the ultimate suicide magnet, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the world’s foremost suicide location. Bobby Mackey’s Music World in Wilder, Kentucky, is known as the world’s most haunted nightclub and a gateway to Hell (sounds like our kind of place!).  And we can’t forget Leap Castle, arguably the most haunted location in Ireland.

Now, on to…

The Top 7 Most Terrifying Places on Earth

The Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Munecas), Mexico
The Island of the Dolls is dedicated to the soul of a young girl who drowned under mysterious circumstances. Don Julian Santana Barrera found the girl and was unable to save her. Soon after, he found a doll floating in the river and hung it in a tree as a tribute to the girl. Later he hung more dolls, and as his life went on, he continued to hang dolls amongst the island. Upon his death, the island became a tourist attraction where others seeking a unique escapade could venture, and many brought their own dolls to hang. The result of all this doll (and doll appendage) hanging is an island completely populated by numerous creepy visages slung from trees wherever you look. Want proof? Check out the unsettling images below of the dolls and Mr. Unsettling himself, Don Julian Santana Barrera.

Snake Island (Ilha da Queimada Grande), São Paolo, Brazil
This one is for all you Ophidiophobiacs out there. That’s right… if you have a fear of snakes, then the aptly named Snake Island in Brazil is not a place you’d want to visit. Home to an endemic snake species named the Golden Lancehead Viper (one of the most venomous snakes on Earth), Snake Island is a veritable wriggling nightmare. With an area of just 430,000 square meters, the island may seem small, but with estimates of the snake population being anywhere between 1 and 5 snakes per square meter, you can see how this location would be normally shunned as a vacation retreat. And the result of a bite from one of these beauties? Check this out: Symptoms include swelling, local pain, nausea and vomiting, blood blisters, bruising, blood in the vomit and urine, intestinal bleeding, kidney failure, hemorrhage in the brain, and severe necrosis of muscular tissue. That’s a bad day. No wonder the Brazilian Navy has banned travel to the island.

Sedlec Ossuary, Kutná Hora, Czech Republic
The Sedlec Ossuary is a Roman Catholic chapel situated under the Cemetery Church of All Saints in Sedlec, which is actually a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic. This particular ossuary contains the bones of somewhere between 40,000 and 70,000 people. If that wasn’t disturbing enough, many of the bones of these said 40-70k people have been arranged in amazingly artistic shapes. It’s like the most morbid art gallery you could possibly imagine. With a pile of bones, many coming from the Black Death and the Hussitte Wars, 19th-century Czech woodcarver and carpenter František Rint was given the task of dealing with the remains; and he created things such as a chandelier, garlands, pier, and monstrances, as well as Rint’s own signature, constructed purely out of human bones. Whoa.

Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo (Catacombe dei Cappuccini or Catacombs of the Capuchins), Sicily, Italy
The Capuchin burial catacombs in Sicily would make anyone uneasy about going to visit their lost loved ones as approximately 8,000 mummified bodies adorn the hallways of this structure. Monks from the monastery dehydrated bodies on ceramic pipes and washed them with vinegar, embalming some and sealing others in glass cabinets. Originally just monks were interred in the catacombs, but eventually it became chic to be laid to rest in the Capuchin Catacombs, and others were entombed there as well. Relatives would visit the bodies and maintain them in damn-near lifelike condition and keep the place running through donations. But if the donations dried up, your loved one went from the prime viewing area onto the shelf, until payment resumed. In the 1920’s Rosalia Lombardo was one of the last to be entombed in Capuchin, and the preservation of her body was amazing. The picture below was taken in 1982. She died in 1920.

Aokigahara Forest, Mount Fuji, Japan
Also known as the Suicide Forest or the Sea of Trees, Aokigahara actually has signs posted at the entrance, in both Japanese and English, urging those entering with suicidal thoughts to reconsider and think about the finer things in life. The suicide numbers in Aokigahara (with hanging and drug overdose being the top preferred methods) are staggering with 247 attempts (57 successful) in 2010 alone, and that is a pretty standard number regardless of the year. The forest is thought to have a demonic association and is also eerily quiet. Due to the extreme thickness of the trees and the absence of much wildlife, Aokigohara is a very quiet forest, adding to the chill in the environment. Whether it be the call from a demon or just mob mentality, the fact is that something is calling people to end it all in Aokigahara. What it is will remain a mystery.

Poveglia Island, Italy
The origins of the nightmares for Poveglia Island began when it was used to quarantine plague victims during the Roman Era, and then again when the Black Death came rolling through Europe. The bodies were piled and burned, and later, as paranoia grew, anyone even suspected of being infected was sent to the island and burned amongst a pile of corpses. Estimates put the body count at around 160,000. If this wasn’t enough, in a pure stroke of genius, it was decided to turn the existing buildings on the island into an insane asylum. Nothing better than housing the criminally insane on an island infamous for tens of thousands of deaths. One doctor went off the deep end and began to attempt to cure insanity via crude lobotomies.  (Are there any two words more chilling together than “crude lobotomies“?) This doctor eventually flung himself from a bell tower, supposedly overcome by the spirits of the island. In 1968 the asylum was shut down, and the island is currently off-limits.

The Corpse Tunnels of Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Kentucky
And finally, we travel to Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky. Many of you may be familiar with this allegedly uber-haunted building that was used as a place to house tuberculosis victims from 1910 to 1962. It’s been featured in every major ghost hunting program. With death numbers ranging from an almost impossible 63,000 to a more believable 8,000, the fact of the matter is, no matter what number you decide is true, a goddamn lot of people died in Waverly Hills. But even creepier than the sanatorium itself is the legendary tunnel below. It was a 500-foot long conveyance that ran below the building with steps on one side to allow employees access without having to walk a dangerous hill outside and a motorized cart on the other side to bring goods into the building. Unfortunately, once the death rate got higher, the motorized cart was used to transport the dead to a hearse waiting at the bottom to remove it discreetly away from the eyes of other patients in the hopes not to lower morale further.  (Could morale actually have gotten any lower at Waverly Hills?) Thus they became known as the Corpse Tunnels of Waverly Hills.

Cast Filling Out for The Last WordFew stories have chilled us to the bone as the one surrounding the upcoming feature film The Last Word. Everyone who thinks the paranormal can be explained away by coincidence and that other-worldly forces amount to nothing but bunk, take notice.

The Last Word is inspired by the tragic and true story of Johnny Frank Garrett (pictured). Ben Ketai wrote the script.

The story focuses on the tragic(!) aftermath endured by the participants in the trial of Garrett in Texas, where he was wrongly convicted and executed for the rape and murder of a nun. To further elaborate, here’s the synopsis of the 2008 documentary film by writer/director Jesse Quackenbush.

A clash between good and evil strikes up on the High Plains of Texas when Johnny Frank Garrett, a 17-year-old retarded boy, is arrested, convicted, and ultimately executed for the rape, mutilation, and murder of 76-year-old nun Sister Tadea Benz. Garrett claimed his innocence from the time of his arrest until his dying breath. Sixteen years after Garrett’s execution new evidence rose up from the cold case grave of the Amarillo Police Department, proving they executed the wrong man! During interviews with key players the case unfolds like a recipe for executing the innocent. In Garrett’s final statement he professed his innocence one last time but did so in a voice driven by hate and vengeance.

Directed by directed by Simon Rumley (Red White & Blue), The Last Word stars Erin Cummings (Bitch Slap), Sean Patrick Flanery (Saw 3D: The Final Chapter), and Mike Doyle.

Synopsis:
A convicted man is executed for his crimes, but not before cursing those who sent him to his death. Soon enough, the people involved in the case, from witnesses to jurors, begin dying. When one juror’s son’s life in threatened, the man sets out to prove that the wrong person was convicted and reverse the curse.

Described as Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead, the Aussie zombie flick Wyrmwood (review) has found a home in the Great White North.

From the Press Release:
Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada is thrilled to announce another collaboration with Raven Banner Entertainment to bring the action-packed genre film Wyrmwood to Canadian fans. The film is the debut feature from Australian filmmakers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner, and this news comes hot on the heels of the film wowing 2014 film festival audiences world wide.

“Wyrmwood hits the ground running and never stops. This action-packed Aussie export will invade the Canadian market in 2015,” says Rob Herholz, General Manager of Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada of the film.

“What’s really cool about Kiah and Tristan is that they’ve created a unique new twist on the zombie mythos and set it in a post-apocalyptic environment. They’re definitely filmmakers to watch,” added Raven Banner’s Managing Partner Michael Paszt.

In the aftermath of a comet breaking up over the Earth, most of the planet’s population quickly succumb to a strange disease which turns them into ‘zombies’. Few survive, and those who do quickly discover all existing fuel sources have been rendered unusable by the plague. Trapped in a wilderness filled with living dead, unable to travel to any safer location, survivors have little to live for. One of those survivors, family man Barry, has lost everything except his sister, Brooke. But even as the disaster unfolds, Brooke is kidnapped by a gang of paramilitary thugs and dragged off to a horrific medical lab run by a psychotic ‘doctor’ who is performing a series of deranged experiments on plague survivors.

The film had a successful festival run including Fantastic Fest, Busan, and Toronto After Dark Film Festivals, where it picked up praise from fans and critics alike. “Mad Max and the zombie genre collide in the adrenaline-fueled Wyrmwood,” says Bloody-Disgusting.com, and it’s “pure comic book mayhem with a dash of heart that sets it apart from the pack.” Ain’t It Cool News notes the film is “full of action that’ll make your heart flip and gore that’ll do the same to your stomach, Wyrmwood is the next great thing in zombies.”
