felicia-day-3It’s pretty much a given that at some point during a season of “Supernatural,” Felicia Day is going to stop by for an episode, and now that we’re in the midst of the show’s 10th, that time is rapidly approaching. The just released synopsis for Episode 10.11, “There’s No Place Like Home,” airing January 27th, includes the return of Charlie from Oz!

“Supernatural” Episode 10.11 – “There’s No Place Like Home” (airs 1/27/15)
CHARLIE RETURNS FROM OZ — Sam (Jared Padalecki) is scanning the internet for suspicious paranormal activity and comes across a video of Charlie (guest star Felicia Day) beating up a district attorney.  Dean (Jensen Ackles) suspects she’s back from Oz and hunting on her own, assuming the district attorney must have been a demon. When they do find Charlie, they are shocked when she tells them why she really came back from Oz.  Phil Sgriccia directed this episode written by Robbie Thompson.

Before we see Charlie again, however, we have the show’s mid-season return, Episode 10.10, “The Hunter Games,” to look forward to.

“Supernatural” Episode 10.10 – “The Hunter Games” (airs 1/20/15)
THE AFTERMATH — After the massacre at the ranch, Dean (Jensen Ackles), Sam (Jared Padalecki), and Castiel (Misha Collins) double their efforts to find a cure for the Mark of Cain; but there is nothing in the lore that can help them.  Desperate, Castiel comes up with an idea that Sam deems the “single worst idea I’ve ever heard.” Meanwhile, Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) continues to plot against Crowley (Mark Sheppard), and Castiel tries to mend his relationship with Claire (guest star Kathryn Love Newton), who is plotting revenge against Dean for killing her friend. John Badham directed this episode written by Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner.

One of NECA’s most popular lines over the course of the past year has been its retro, video game-inspired toys, which all started when Jason Voorhees made the transition from 8-bit video game to super cool action figure. Who’s next? Predator is next!

Yesterday the company unveiled the first look at the latest figure in the video game line, inspired by the 1991 Predator 2 game for the Sega Genesis. A special paint deco reproduces the stylized 16-bit look of the character from the end title screen, known as the “City Hunter.”

City Hunter stands 8″ tall, with over 25 points of articulation for great poses, plus staff, disc, skull and spine accessories. Like the other figures in the line, he comes in special window box packaging to re-create the look and feel of the classic video game cartridge box.

Look for this one on toy shelves come May of this year. City Hunter joins a previously released “Jungle Hunter” toy, based on the 1989 Predator game for the NES.

With the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter 2015 Press Tour under way, some new details regarding the much talked about upcoming Evil Dead-based TV show, “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” have surfaced. Read on for the latest.

The series, which reunites executive producer/director Sam Raimi, executive producer Rob Tapert, and executive producer/star Bruce Campbell, will be home to half-hour long episodes, not hour-long as many have assumed. Starz head Chris Albrecht said, “The half-hour idea was their idea. And I can tell you it’s a chock-full half hour.”

IGN caught up with Albrecht, who dropped the following details on them. “We are shooting it in New Zealand. We’ll have to import some cars that drive left-hand and import some signs because it kind of takes place in classic American towns or cities. Rob Tapert, who is the heart and soul of that hands-on producing team, makes his home there and we shot “Spartacus” there and there are great production teams there. We’re looking forward to being down there and flying talent back and forth.

As for when the show will premiere, Albrecht said, “I think most likely it will be fourth quarter [of 2015]. End of third quarter, fourth quarter, something like that. We’ve got a lot of shows this year. We’re very, very excited.”

In the half-hour horror-comedy “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” Ash takes a road trip to banish his demons alongside two young helpers and his trusty boomstick.

TCA Winter 2015: The CW Announces Early Renewals; Reveals iZombie and The Messengers Premiere Dates; Moves Supernatural Again but Spinoff Still in Play

thecwToday it was The CW’s turn to take on the Television Critics Association during that organization’s currently under way 2015 Winter Tour in Pasadena, CA; and if you’re among the fans of the network’s horror slate, we have a lot of good news for you so settle in and read on!

First up, The CW’s president, Mark Pedowitz, said that, in essence, they’ve picked up all of the scripted series from their fall 2014 schedule to next season.

The series being ordered for the 2015-2016 season include “Supernatural” (Season 11), “The Originals” (Season 3), and “The Vampire Diaries” (Season 7). Also renewed are “Arrow” (Season 4), “Jane the Virgin (Season 2), “Reign” (Season 3), “The 100″ (Season 3), and “The Flash” (Season 2).

“Each of these series have helped define what The CW is today, a network that is home to smart, provocative, quality programming, targeting a savvy adult audience,” said Pedowitz. “By picking up these shows now, our executive producers can start planning next season’s storylines, and rolling these shows out throughout next season guarantees The CW will have more proven original series for our fall, midseason, and summer 2016 line-ups.”

In addition, The CW announced its midseason schedule, including the series premieres of “iZombie” (which is the impetus for “Supernatural’s” move) and “The Messengers,” two shows we’ve been following closely.

From executive producer Rob Thomas (“Veronica Mars”), “iZombie” makes its series debut on Tuesday, March 17 (9:00-10:00pm ET), following an all-new episode of “The Flash” (8:00-9:00pm ET).

What can we expect? Per Deadline, exec producer Rob Thomas acknowledged he “didn’t hew terribly close to the source material” in adapting the DC comic book for CW’s midseason series. Whereas the comic has a “whole monster universe,” he wanted to the show to “stay strictly zombie” because the producers really wanted a “case-of-the-week show,” and having a zombie working in a morgue eating corpse brains gave them that vehicle. The writers went for a “very Raymond Chandler-esque, hard-boiled cynical world view” in Liv’s voiceover narration. We also heard the series being referred to as “CSI” or “Law and Order” for the younger set so whether or not we continue coverage is up for debate, especially taking into account Thomas’ other remarks…

While a zombie, Liv is “softer” and “sweetness and light” as she discovers “things worth living for” as one of the undead. As for why she stays pasty with other zombies in the show opting to go “under cover” via spray tan and hair dye, “The reason she does not spray tan or die her hair to look like everyone else is because she will look great on our poster,” Thomas said. “The truth is, it’s for the CW subway poster.

Catch a new “first look” preview of “iZombie” below.

“iZombie” Synopsis:
Rose McIver (“Masters of Sex,” “Once Upon a Time”) stars as Olivia “Liv” Moore, a rosy-cheeked, disciplined, over-achieving medical resident who had her life path completely mapped out until the night she attended a party that unexpectedly turned into a zombie feeding frenzy. Malcolm Goodwin (“Breakout Kings”), newcomer Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley (“One Tree Hill”), and David Anders (“Once Upon a Time,” “The Vampire Diaries”) co-star.  As one of the newly undead, Liv has devised a way to resist her baser urges to devour fresh human brains: She’s taken a job in the Seattle coroner’s office. In this appropriately dead-end job, she can secretly snack on the brains of the many Jane and John Doe corpses that make a final stop in the morgue.

Liv remains resigned to an eternity without hope or purpose, until she realizes that with every brain she consumes, she retains a portion of that person’’s memories, and she begins to experience visions from the point of view of the murder victims. It’’s not the same as being alive again, but at least she can find purpose in her undead existence by helping to solve the murders of those who are indeed fully dead.

On Friday, April 10, The CW presents the series premiere of its apocalyptic new drama “The Messengers” (9:00-10:00pm ET).

“The Messengers” Synopsis:
When a mysterious object plummets to Earth, the blinding explosion it causes sends out a shock wave that instantly connects five strangers who awaken after the pulse with extraordinary gifts they can barely believe. Most mysterious of all is a figure known only as “The Man,” who brings death and suffering wherever he appears. The wheels of Revelation have begun to turn, and these five newly christened Angels of the Apocalypse may be the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture.

“The Messengers” stars Shantel VanSanten (“Gang Related,” “One Tree Hill”), Jon Fletcher (“City of Dreams”), Sofia Black-D’Elia (“Betrayal,” “Gossip Girl”), JD Pardo (“Revolution”), Joel Courtney (Super 8), Anna Diop (“Everybody Hates Chris”), Craig Frank (“Mixology”), and Diogo Morgado (Son of God, Sol de Inverno) as The Man.

Of course we have a new “first look” preview of “The Messengers,” too.

With “iZombie” on Tuesdays, the Winchester brothers move to their new night as “Supernatural” returns to Wednesdays, beginning March 18, 9:00-10:00pm ET, the week after “The 100″ concludes its second season.

Deadline provided a tiny update on the show’s potential spinoff: “I’ve been pretty outspoken that I’ve wanted another spinoff,” Pedowitz said. Now that Supernatural has been renewed for an 11th season, “hopefully next year they will come with something.

First Images Check in for Bates Motel Season 3

If there’s one TV series we can’t wait to return to the airwaves, it’s A&E’s “Bates Motel,” which we learned last week will arrive on March 9th.  In the meantime here’s the first batch of photos from the upcoming third season, which indicates that Norman and Norma’s “unique” relationship isn’t about to get normal anytime soon!

“Bates Motel,” returns for a gripping third season filled with family strife, murder, and mystery lead by Vera Farmiga (Norma) and Freddie Highmore (Norman). This season focuses on the evolution of the Bates family and dives head first into Norman’s waning ability to stay in denial about what’s happening to him and the lengths he will go to gain control of his fragile psyche. The dramatic events of last season leave Norma (Vera Farmiga) reluctantly more aware of Norman’s mental fragility and fearful of what he is capable of.

From executive producers Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “The Returned”) and Kerry Ehrin (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”), “Bates Motel” serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho and provides viewers with an intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates unravels through his teenage years.

After a blissful summer of closeness with his mother, living within the safe confines of home and the Bates Motel, Norman’s fears about what really happened with Blaire Watson resurface, and Norma questions what really happened. Forced to look at the truths about Norman for the first time, their deeply intricate relationship continues to evolve. Norma finds herself turning to the other man in her life, Norman’s half-brother, Dylan (Max Thieriot), and begins to rely on him in ways that she never expected. This relationship inevitably triggers jealousy in Norman, and a new kind of love triangle between Norma and her two sons erupts. Her estranged brother and the boys’ uncle, Caleb (Kenny Johnson), returns to haunt the family throughout the season, challenging their bond even further.

Pressures of the outside world take hold of the family when newcomers Kevin Rahm (“Mad Men,” “Desperate Housewives”), Tracy Spiradakos (“Revolution”), and Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”) arrive in White Pine Bay. After a summer of living at the Bates Motel, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) and Norma have grown closer, but they will always have that troubling question mark surrounding Norman. Something doesn’t feel right, but in spite of his instincts, Romero finds himself continually drawn back to the Bates family — and to Norma. Emma (Olivia Cooke), also determined to find out what is happening to Norman, becomes more emboldened, fearless, and goes after the things she wants. Familiar face Bradley (Nicola Peltz) returns to surprise the family and digs up old memories.

Dredd 2 Still Dead

$

Back in 2012 the surprisingly badass Judge Dredd reboot entitled Dredd (review) wormed its way into the hearts of several sci-fi/horror fans, and we’ve been hoping for a sequel ever since. Some unfortunate news has hit the Interwebs, and it sounds like we’ll be waiting a really looooooooong time.

IGN caught up with director Alex Garland, who offered an update on the proposed film.

As far as I’m concerned? Yeah, it is [dead],” said Garland. “My hope is, and I actually think this will happen – somebody else will do it. Not to be all coy and silly about it, but I think our film was better than the first one, right? Just to be blunt. And the job of the next people is to make their film better than ours. And then if they do that, then finally, maybe this character will break out in the way that it deserves to. But we’ll see.

As for the fan petition to get the film made…

“It makes me feel sad really. I feel grateful to the people who’ve attempted to get a sequel off the ground. And sorry that actually what happened was we let them down. Because the reality is that a film needs to acquit itself. It shouldn’t need a petition. And the truth is if it gets to the point where it needs a petition, it’s in big trouble anyway. That’s the cold, hard reality of it. I feel a sense of residual guilt. It’s quite strong actually; it’s not that residual. Dredd was a very, very hard movie to work on, for all sorts of different reasons, and the reward would have been at the end of it that it all worked out. But it didn’t all work out. That’s the reality.”

So what would Garland’s sequel look like if it did happen?

“The first film we made it for about $35m, although quite a lot of that was to do with shooting it in 3D. Or a chunk of it. And we managed to make that film for that budget by locking it in a building essentially, sort of Die Hard-style. In the second film it was going to go out into the desert, which would be The Cursed Earth – people who know the comic book would know immediately what that means. And maybe throw some money at some key sequences. That’s how you do it I guess. I think we could have made it for another $30m, $35m type thing. We could have made it for $30m if we shot it in 2D. $35m maybe 3D I guess. Of that order. But the third one, that would have been more expensive because it would have been going back to the city and maybe bringing in some Dark Judges or something like that.”

Beetlejuice 2 – Seth Grahame-Smith Talks Sequel; Stephen King Projects; Something Wicked This Way Comes Remake

I feel like we’ve been talking about a sequel to Beetlejuice almost as long as we’ve been talking about Ghostbusters 3. Still, both projects seem to be moving along nicely now, and recently writer Seth Grahame-Smith talked a bit about his approach to bringing back the ghost with the most as well as his directorial debut, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and more.

As per THR:

Grahame-Smith says he is rejecting the idea of rebooting the movie with a new star in favor of bringing Michael Keaton back in a sequel set in the present day. He also took Keaton’s “less is more” advice with the character, noting that in the original Beetlejuice doesn’t appear until almost the midpoint.”

Grahame-Smith also says hopes to start filming his directorial debut, an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, this year! Also on the busy man’s plate… an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Things They Left Behind with Greg Berlanti for CBS and other movies, including a possible Gremlins reboot, another project called Last American Vampire, which takes the character on a Zelig-like journey from Jack the Ripper to the Hindenburg disaster to the Kennedy assassination, and producer Dan Lin is working with Grahame-Smith on adapting King’s It.

Talk about a busy year! Look for more on all these projects soon.

Great news has come in for fans of “Twin Peaks.” According to Deadline (and confirmed by David Lynch via Twitter), Agent Dale Cooper himself, Kyle MacLachlan, has closed a deal to topline the new limited series for Showtime from original creators Lynch and Mark Frost.

“I’m very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of ‘Twin Peaks,’” MacLachlan said. “May the forest be with you.”

The nine-episode series will go into production in 2015 for a premiere in 2016 to mark the 25th anniversary of when the series finished its run on ABC. Lynch and Frost are writing and produce all nine episodes with Lynch directing every episode.

The new “Twin Peaks” is set in the present day, more than two decades after the events in the first two seasons. It will continue the lore and story of the original series with Lynch and Frost committed to providing long-awaited answers and, hopefully, a satisfying conclusion to the series.

Starring Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, and Eva Green.

In the upcoming season Vanessa (Eva Green) and Ethan (Josh Hartnett) form a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear), and Brona (Billie Piper) are all waging battles of their own.

Patti LuPone will guest star as a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past. Helen McCrory returns as Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali), the seductive spiritualist who will pose a unique threat to our protagonists this season, along with Simon Russell Beale, who is back as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle. Additional guest stars include Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard investigator; Sarah Greene as Poole’s powerful daughter, Hecate; and Johnny Beauchamp as a man with a singular past.

Good Word, The (Short)

Artwork Coming SoonStarring Paul Kennedy, Conleth Hill, Una Kavanagh

Directed by Stuart Graham

It’s the 1950s in Antrim, Northern Ireland, and Ivan Cutler (Kennedy), with a bible resting on his chest, wakes up in bed next to a corpse.

And he’s quite happy about that.

As Ivan sets about shaving his face and putting together his very well-to-do appearance, it becomes obvious that he has, in fact, murdered a couple in their home and then spent the night there. Robbing them of all of their money, he then sets off on the road, traversing the beautiful Irish countryside before stopping off at a rural farmstead.
Here he’s greeted by Ma Taggart (Kavanagh), wife of farmer and butcher Da (Hill). With Da currently preoccupied in the shed, Cutler introduces himself to Ma as a missionary spreading the word of the Lord. Invited in for tea, Cutler sits down to talk life, faith and family with the inquisitive homemaker – but things take a more confrontational turn when Da arrives back from the shed.

And Ivan will soon find out that his latest marks have some deadly secrets of their own.

Throughout its 20-minute runtime, The Good Word finds itself predominantly a display of formidable performances from the cast. Paul Kennedy makes for an outwardly suave, but convincingly dangerous, individual – a smarmy murderer who, unbeknownst to him, is in far over his head even before his aggressive nature is forced to reveal itself. Hill and Kavanagh match him admirably with their naturalistic performances – especially on Hill’s behalf as the friendly-yet-imposing Da. There’s a consistent thread of dark comedy throughout the short, most of which is placed in Kavanagh’s capable hands – her timing and delivery elevating the laughs when it comes to a proclaimed distrust of electricity, and a dash of old-fashioned Irish racism.

Director Graham takes a minimalist approach, with the majority of the proceedings taking place within the Taggarts’ kitchen. Even so, it would appear that every single penny put into this production has made it to the screen, with crisp cinematography and a real period feel generated by some excellent production design and costuming.

On the down side, the basic premise of The Good Word is nothing that we haven’t seen before many a time.

Anyone with a basic familiarity with the genre, especially in short form, will know exactly where it’s going the moment Ivan sets foot in the farmhouse. Still, this is ably overshadowed by the production quality, performances and snappy script. Perhaps the biggest challenge that Graham’s film may face on the wider festival circuit are the very Northern Irish accents and idiosyncrasies, which can be difficult to grasp for those unfamiliar with them. This may leave some of the sparkling humour flying outside of some audiences’ radars, but should play very well to the home crowd.

For me, though? The Good Word does indeed feel like home – and it’s very, very good.

With the third season of “Hannibal” still a ways off, we’re fiending for another visit with the good doctor and his black wendigo alter-ego. That being said, some juicy news has come that fits like a flesh suit and has us all gooey inside.

TVLine reports that Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) will join NBC’s “Hannibal” in Season 3 in the terrifying role of Francis Dolarhyde (aka The Tooth Fairy), the main villain of Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, one book in the series on which “Hannibal” is based. The hulking Dolarhyde is a serial killer with a set of chompers that would make the Big Bad Wolf a little envious — and a penchant for targeting entire households for slaughter.

Armitage’s gig is slated to last six episodes.

The Season 3 opener will pick up one year after Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and Bedelia (Gillian Anderson) were seen jetting off to Europe. For more info be sure to visit “Hannibal” on NBC.com, “like” “Hannibal” on Facebook, and follow “Hannibal” on Twitter.
