Dark Horse Announces Tim Seeley's Ex Sanguine Coming in November

$

C2E2 is happening this weekend in Chicago, and the first bit of news has come out from Dark Horse Comics announcing Ex Sanguine, a unique blend of horror and thriller from Tim Seeley.

From the Press Relesae:
“Ex Sanguine is my take on the vampire-romance genre, but instead of being full of longing and anguished staring, it’s full of brutal flirtations between two savage predators, one a vampire, one a serial killer,” said Tim Seeley, the creator of Hack/Slash, writer of The Occultist, artist of The Guild, and more.

One is a natural-born killer—a remorseless hunter of men restlessly prowling the night for victims to quench an unnatural bloodlust. The other, Saul Adams, is a vampire. A bored vampire. His centuries of existence have left him world weary and detached, lost in a haze of endless memories for days or weeks on end. His latest bout of preoccupation is mercifully interrupted by federal agents.

They insinuate Saul’s complicity in the latest of a series of murders that have come to be known as “The Sanguine Killings.” Saul ignores these accusations, having eyes only for the bits of crime scenes they show him. The Sanguine Killer doesn’t just kill; he also paints primal pictographs in his victims’ blood. Where the feds see murderous compulsion and rage in the intricate patterns of Xs left on walls and sidewalks by the killer, Saul sees something different: Craft. Art.

“Dark Horse has long been the leader in high-quality, innovative horror comics, and I’m honored to bring my blood-soaked ‘romance’ Ex Sanguine to their impressive lineup,” Seeley added.

Ex Sanguine #1 is on sale November 28, 2012.

B-Sides: Is There a Phantom in the Mall?

”Is there a phantom in the mall? Or just some retard in a broken hockey mask? With lyrics like that there should be no doubt why The Vandals’ daffy Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge theme is one of the all-time great B-Sides.

I’m kind of surprised that no Hollywood producers have set about to remake Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge. A burn-scarred teenager presumed dead after his family was killed in a house fire lurks in the bowels of the new mega mall committing acts of terror against the mall owners that had his family killed in order to gain their property, and he protects his former girlfriend as she gets drawn into the conspiracy, at least until he gets insanely jealous of her making time with a potential new suitor. Remaking this 1989 movie for today’s tweener audience seems like a no-brainer to me.

But if such a remake were to happen who could they possibly get to cover The Vandals’ preposterously rocking theme song?

The Wikipedia entry for the The Vandals describes the rock band’s style of music as follows:

They are well-known for their use of humor, preferring to use their music as a vehicle for entertainment and sarcasm rather than as a platform for more serious issues.

You don’t say?

Is there a Phantom in the Mall?
Folks are bound to ask.
Is he the Phantom of the Mall?
Or just some retard in a broken hockey mask?

Sadly, this wonderfully wacky theme appears to have never been released in any format except the closing credits of Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge and the only video for the song I’ve been able to find on YouTube doesn’t boast any footage from the movie. Heck, if the movie was as much fun as its theme song it probably would have been sequalized and/or remade already.

RoboCop Remake Attracting Big Names

New Writer Takes Aim at RoboCop RemakeWhile no one other than RoboCop himself, Joel Kinnaman (The Darkest Hour, "The Killing"), has been officially cast as of yet, there are some big names circling the upcoming remake of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic. Read on for details.

According to The Tracking Board, Edward Norton (Fight Club, American History X, The Incredible Hulk), Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk), Rebecca Hall (The Town), and Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel) are being considered for roles in the new flick touted as showing off a more human side to the titular character.

Norton, if cast, would actually be playing “Norton” – a key scientist behind the RoboCop program. Bernal would be playing Murphy’s former partner who begins hooking up with Hall (Murphy’s “widow”) after they both think he’s dead. Penn is being considered for the role of “Novack”, a highly political right-wing reporter. Penn right-wing? Talk about movie magic!

Sony Pictures will be distributing MGM's RoboCop. The film’s being directed by Jose Padilha, helmer of the two Elite Squad films. Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. Josh Zetumer wrote the script.

Look for the flick in theatres on August 9th, 2013.

The Hunger Games Continue as the Cabin in the Woods Fills with Stooges and Battleship Explodes Abroad

$
0
0

The woods are alive with the sound of teenagers getting killed. With The Hunger Games ruling the box office for the fourth straight week, just how did the other teen killfest, The Cabin in the Woods, fare against this box office juggernaut and three guys named Moe, Larry, and Curly? Read on!

Week 4 for The Hunger Games resulted in another $21.5 million and another week on top of the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. Domestically alone, it already stands at over $336 million. Add in international and the tally has already crossed $500 million.

Something dawned on me this weekend that actually has me mildly intrigued. MTV will soon be announcing this year’s Movie Award nominees. We all know that the Twilight films have dominated that awards show every year. However, this year, I do believe given the screwy timeline MTV does their nominating process that The Hunger Games will be eligible. Could The Hunger Games ruin Breaking Dawn: Part 1’s clean sweep? What will happen when two mega blockbusters that appeal to teenage girls collide? I don’t want to alarm anyone but the tween-pocalypse could be upon us come June!

As for the long-shelved but now critically hailed collaboration between The Avengers filmmaker Joss Whedon and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”/”Angel” cohort Drew Goddard, The Cabin in the Woods had to settle for a third place opening behind the revival of The Three Stooges. $14.9 million for the weekend isn’t too bad all things considered.

What is disheartening is that it only received a Cinemascore of “C”, which, according to Box Office Mojo, is most likely due to the film being a satire that was sold predominantly as a straight-forward horror film. Those people are the reason we can’t have nice things.

No need to get upset over The Cabin in the Woods not being a bigger hit because the worst case scenario still has it going on to become the cult classic it was clearly created to be in the first place. Not like the movie was designed to be a sequel-spawning machine a la Saw.

It’s not really horror but I might as well make mention of it. Anyone see a movie called Lockout this weekend? Guy Pearce playing Escape from New York meets Die Hard trying to rescue the President’s daughter trapped on a space prison? Guess not since the Luc Besson-produced sci-fi actioner opened way down in 9th place with only 6.25 million.

The Raid: Redemption also expanded nationwide to 881 theaters this weekend. Unfortunately, can’t say surprisingly, though, it took in over a million dollars. A subtitled Indonesian action movie that’s still only relatively well known to hardcore internet movie fans wasn’t quite ready to go mainstream despite how badass it is. Regardless, like The Cabin in the Woods, its cult status is already secured.

Next weekend - zippo! Unless that Disney Chimpanzee movie turns out to be a Monkey Shines-esque horror movie in disguise, there won’t be anything new for horror fans until two weeks from now when John Cusak Poes it up for The Raven. After that, summer movie season is upon us and horror mostly goes on the backburner for several months.

Speaking of blockbusters and why we can’t have nice things, internationally, Battleship is in no danger of sinking anytime soon. Already playing in theaters in many foreign territories weeks before it sets sail in America, Peter Berg’s Navy vs. the Halo-Formers Paramount/Hasbro synergized blockbuster has already grossed a whopping $58 million. Once again proving that big explosions and loud noises translate to any language. Will be interesting to see how Battleship does when it opens in the US given how much derision it has already been met with just based on the board game-inspired premise alone.

You'd Better Be Good or The Butcher Fairy is Coming for You! Check Out the Short!

Okay kiddies, you know all about Santa and Krampus and the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny, but how many of you are familiar with the legend of The Butcher Fairy? We've got a 15-minute short film for you showing that particular entity in action!

To sum it up, the world's naughtiest five-year old has already acted up enough that his parents have spanked his ass off his body. Literally. They've got no other alternative than to turn to The Butcher Fairy. She's like Nanny McPhee…with a straight razor.

The film was written and directed by Brent Bokovoy and starring Rylan Gregg McPherson, Diana Vanhorn, Joel Boling and Kai Whiteley. The narrator is Donald O'Donovan. The entire film is written in rhyme, which can become a bit tedious, but there are some cool F/X and the creepiest damn Charlie McCarthy doll since the Night Terrors Dummy short. It's unique in that it has similarities to The Princess Bride and 8 Mile. How often can you say that? Not to mention an ending "The Twilight Zone" would be proud of. Check it out!

What's worse than one strange visitor in the middle of the night? A subsequent, much stranger visitor that follows him. Such is the case in the short film, The Visitor.

This 20-minute short follows the story of a single father trying to win the favor of his teenage daughter who is slipping away from him. A knock at the door rips through the stillness of the night and an unexpected stranger arrives…then an exponentially stranger stranger arrives after him.

Written and directed by Matthew Ryckman and starring Ari Blinder, Abigail Monet and Elliot Grey, The Visitor is a cool creature feature that you'll definitely enjoy. It's shot slickly and written well, building tension like a champ. Take a look at The Visitor.
