H1Z1 Infects Steam Early

We’ve been waiting patiently to dig our zombie-loving claws into the new game from Sony Online Entertainment, H1Z1, and if you’re a Steam user, get ready to be happy. Look for our impressions tomorrow.

From the Press Release:
Today, Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced that the H1Z1 virus has spread beyond SOE labs and is now available on PC to all survivors worldwide through Steam’s Early Access program starting at $19.99 USD. SOE advises players to start strategizing for survival, though it remains unclear if banding together or fighting against one another will improve their chances of surviving.

“We’re excited to launch H1Z1 into its Early Access Alpha,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “H1Z1 puts players into a post-apocalyptic zombie survival role — it triggers those primal fight-or-flight survival instincts. Since we first announced this game, we’ve been developing it side-by-side with our players, gathering feedback through platforms like Reddit and Twitch. Now, players can finally join us in game and really make an impact as we continue to perfect gameplay elements during Early Access. We’re eager to see how the players react and how H1Z1 evolves.”

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, H1Z1 is a zombie survival MMO where players must use their wits and skills, as well as strategically align with friends and fight off enemies to survive the worldwide infection. A game truly about survival, players will have to overcome environmental elements such as starvation, weather, and animals; hordes of zombies; and other hostile players if they want to live. To increase their chances of survival, players will need to be creative with materials found in the world and utilize the game’s expansive crafting system to construct weapons, buildings, and more.

To accommodate a variety of play styles, players have access to multiple ruleset servers in H1Z1 that can be mixed and matched, including: Player vs. Player, Player vs. Environment, Head Shots Only, Hardcore, and First-Person Only. Additionally, private servers will be tested throughout Early Access, giving players the power to create their own rulesets and community. Though the program will gradually expand, initially private servers will be invite-only to ensure adequate time for testing and refinements.

SOE has also partnered with the creator of PLAYERUNKNOWN’s Battle Royale, Brendan Greene, to license the extreme survival mod for a dedicated Battle Royale server in H1Z1. Offering a unique gameplay experience, Battle Royale plunges players into a bloody last man standing game-mode, where the only goal is to survive to the end.

“I was blown away when John Smedley at SOE contacted me about Battle Royale,” said Brendan Greene (aka PLAYERUNKNOWN), the creator of Battle Royale. “SOE could have made their own game mod, but instead reached out to the community. Partnering with SOE on H1Z1 was the best holiday gift I could have imagined, and I can’t wait to jump in and play.”

Players will be granted access to the Battle Royale server through Event Tickets, which can be purchased or earned through gameplay.

At Early Access, players can expect to see initial iterations of crafting, base building, combat, vehicles, circle-of-death, day/night cycle, weather, player vitals, hunting & forging, and, of course, zombies, in the game. H1Z1 will continue to grow and evolve throughout development. More information about what to expect in Early Access can be found here.

H1Z1 survivors will have two Early Access options to choose from — Standard or Premium:

– Standard – $19.99 USD – Includes Early Access to H1Z1 as well as 3 Event Tickets, 2 Crates, and 1 Crate Key
– Premium – $39.99 USD – Includes Early Access to H1Z1 as well as 25 Event Tickets, 3 Airdrop Tickets, 6 Crates, 4 Crate Keys, and an exclusive Aviator Hat Crafting Recipe

Players that want to be part of the development process are encouraged to actively provide feedback on design choices and upcoming features through H1Z1‘s official Reddit page  or forums.

The Boy Next Door – JLo and Ryan Guzman Narrate this Pair of Teasers

We’re just a week away from the release of the Blumhouse-produced thriller The Boy Next Door, starring Jennifer Lopez and her golden globes; and Universal has released another pair of teaser videos, both of which include JLo and co-star Ryan Guzman discussing their “Dating Preferences” and debating “Honesty vs. Game.”

The Boy Next Door is due in theaters on January 23rd of this year.

Hill Harper, John Corbett, and Kristin Chenoweth also star. Rob Cohen (XXX) directed the Barbara Curry-penned micro-budget movie, which is being distributed by Universal. Blumhouse made the movie with Smart Entertainment and Nuyorican Productions.

Lopez play a newly separated mother who finds herself attracted to the teenage boy (Guzman) who moves in next door and befriends her son. When she starts and then abruptly ends their illicit romance, he’s not ready to let her go — in a very Fatal Attraction kind of way. Chenoweth portrays Lopez’s best friend.

Today on VOD: The Cabining and The Phoenix Project

Two brand spankin’ new genre flicks hit VOD outlets today, and since it is our duty to keep you informed of such things, we are here to do just that. So read on for all the details about this weekend’s VOD offerings!

First up, Indican Pictures released The Cabining into limited theaters and onto VOD today, which is a horror-comedy that stars legendary “that guy” Richard Riehle (Hatchet).

Directed by Steven Kopera, the film centers on Todd and Bruce, two struggling writers who get one last shot at success thanks to Todd’s wealthy uncle, Sarge, who gives them two weeks to impress him. With the deadline looming and no fresh ideas, the pair head to Shangri-La, a serene artist’s retreat, with the hope that the peace and company of fellow artists will inspire greatness… or, failing greatness, at least a fling with a leggy French sculptor.

The retreat proves to be anything but serene, however, as the artists start dying off one by one, and soon these two are fighting for their very own lives!

The Cabining
Also on VOD and in select theaters today is The Phoenix Project, which is of the sci-fi/horror variety. Written and directed by Tyler Graham Pavey, the flick stars Corey Rieger, Andrew Simpson, David Pesta, and Orson Ossman.

In the film, four young scientists work to craft a machine to reanimate deceased organisms. As the project develops, the machine exceeds their wildest expectations, creating boundless possibilities that challenge the very nature of human existence. However, success with this experiment comes at a price, as ulterior motives and reckless abandon lead to consequences none of them could predict. As their time and resources fade, this team of visionary scientists must face the realities of the task they have set out for themselves, bringing the dead back to life.

Ghostbusters 3 – Director Paul Feig Offers New Details

Director Paul Feig just dropped some new details on the next Ghostbusters or Ghostbusters 3 or whatever the hell this thing is shaping up to be, and we have them all for you right here.

Empire caught up with Feig, who provided the following info for fans.

As for his decision to reboot the franchise instead of just making the sequel we all were hoping for…

“A lot of people ask why I didn’t create my own thing, but Ghostbusters never ran out of steam; it’s such a great idea. It’s such a fun franchise so why not bring it to a new generation? The old movie is never going to not exist. It’s not my plan to erase every copy! Hopefully they can all live together.”

On the possible casting of Melissa McCarthy…

“It came out publicly that we’re in talks with Melissa, but there’s a lot to work out.”

Will his movie mention what’s come before it in any way? Homages?

We’re not recreating the old movie, but we want to do just enough fun nods that the fans will go, ‘Oh, okay, they’re acknowledging that the other movie existed.’ I like to watch parodies, but I don’t want to do them because they’re too referential. Comedy that’s too referential has such a short shelf life; whereas, comedy that’s based around characters will be relatable 2,000 years from now because people won’t change that much.”

Location revealed…

“To me it’s such a New York movie, and the biggest sin would be to pull it out of there. I just love New York, and selfishly, I just want to shoot in New York.”

Preacher – Seth Rogen Draws Inspiration

$

So here’s a neat little tidbit for your Friday horror news consumption. Seth Rogen just took to Twitter with a bounty of movies from which he’s drawing inspiration for “Preacher.” What are they? Read on for the skinny!

From the Previous Press Release:
AMC has ordered a pilot for a series based on the popular comic book franchise “Preacher.” The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for TV by Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”) and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (This Is The End, Superbad, Neighbors). Rogen & Goldberg will produce through their Point Grey banner, along with Neal Moritz’s Original Film. The pilot was written by Sam Catlin. Rogen & Goldberg are attached to direct.

“Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully. With ‘Preacher,’ it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic book series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and a whole lot of fans who already know Jesse Custer, Cassidy, and Tulip,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of original programming, production and digital content. “Add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, an incredible producing team in Neal Moritz, the Original Film team, and our good friends at Sony Pictures Television; and we have everything we need to be VERY excited to move forward on ‘Preacher.’”

“Preacher has been our favorite comic since it first came out,” Rogen & Goldberg said. “Garth Ennis is one of our idols, and it’s an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won’t make too many dick jokes and ruin it.”

“Thanks to AMC for completely losing their minds and letting us do this,” Catlin said. “I’m so excited to bring Garth Ennis’ bloody, amazing, and bloody amazing universe to TV.”

Garth Ennis said: “Steve Dillon and I are extremely pleased to know AMC has taken ‘Preacher’ to pilot. We have had an ongoing voice in the efforts of the writers whom Sony TV and Original Film entrusted with this project, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, and have been most gratified that they continue to include us and that they have tackled the project with the type of unwavering commitment and courage needed to present the material as Steve and I intended. This has been a long time coming, but that it continues apace, and with the chance to be delivered episodically, gives ‘Preacher’ an opportunity to be seen in its best possible medium, not previously possible. And many thanks indeed to Ken Levin and Neal Moritz for their never flagging commitment to ‘Preacher,’ and for never giving up well past the point when I myself grew skeptical — we have principally gotten to where we are today because of Neal and Ken.”

Based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s twisted ‘90s comic book series, “Preacher” is about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God.
The pilot will be produced in the summer of 2015 for series consideration in 2016.

Robert Kirkman Talks The Walking Dead Companion Series

With the return of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” officially on the horizon, creator Robert Kirkman recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to chat about what flesh-hungry fans can expect from the companion series.

This is going to be a show about family,” says Kirkman. “But it’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in ‘The Walking Dead’ thus far. So what we’re trying to do with ‘The Walking Dead’ spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love ‘The Walking Dead,’ so you’ll get the kind of things that you expect from a ‘Walking Dead’ story. But, at the same time, we’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of ‘The Walking Dead’ spinoff is going to be startlingly different. We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own… You could watch ‘The Walking Dead’ spinoff if you’ve never watched an episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that’s what we’ve accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I’m really excited.

To help achieve the different look and feel, the pilot will be directed by Adam Davidson, a newcomer to this world. “He hasn’t directed ‘The Walking Dead,’” says Kirkman. “So that is one way that we’re trying to bring a new directing style to the show—to bring in new visual language to this show. That’s something that Adam is working really hard to bring. He’ll largely be responsible for the different look and feel that makes the show stand on its own.”

Why The Purge 3 Doesn’t Need Frank Grillo – Even Though He’s Really, Really Awesome

$
0
0

We reported earlier today that there’s a possibility The Purge: Anarchy star Frank Grillo may be returning for 2016’s The Purge 3, which needless to say got the horror community talking.

Grillo, a living, breathing action star, was hands down the best thing about The Purge franchise’s first sequel, channeling his inner Frank Castle for the role of ‘Sergeant.’ A badass dude with big ass guns and an equally badass car, Sergeant was on a revenge-fueled mission in the film, the role fully cementing Grillo’s status as one of cinema’s great ass-kickers.

Though the thought of Grillo reprising the role and kicking some more ass on the big screen is one that admittedly wets my whistle, I can’t help but feel that bringing the character back for The Purge 3 is a bad idea. If Sergeant returns, that means the film will in some way continue the storyline from Anarchy, which is something this franchise quite simply need not do.

Unique in the world of franchises, The Purge has established itself as one comprised of totally standalone stories, essentially making it an anthology series about the titular Purge night. Anarchy, for example, had no direct connection to the first film, making it feel like a refreshing cinematic experience, rather than a continuation of something we had already seen before.

Much the same way FX has been doing with “American Horror Story,” The Purge has thus far branded itself as a series that reinvents itself every year, using the basic concept to tell different stories that make different statements about humanity and explore different facets of the bizarre “holiday.” And that’s pretty cool, as sticking to that tradition will likely prevent the franchise from the inherent curse of getting stale.

Just as the story from the first film was neatly wrapped up in the end, so too was Sergeant’s story in Anarchy, and I see little reason to draw that out or milk Grillo’s sheer and utter badassery for another film. As much as I love Grillo, I’d much prefer another standalone story set on Purge night, and I can’t help but hope that the franchise continues to reinvent itself with each passing year.

But that’s just my two cents, which today’s news compelled me to spew. I encourage you to throw yours into the comments section below!

James DeMonaco is set to write and direct The Purge 3, with a planned release date of July 1, 2016.

It’s almost hard to believe, but it’s now been 12 years since the release of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses, which officially launched the musician’s career as a horror filmmaker. Over a decade later, the cast has reunited, and the photo is sure to put a smile on your face!

This past Monday, Zombie celebrated his 50th birthday, and over the weekend his wife, Sheri, threw him a party that was packed with fellow horror icons. Zombie and friends have been sharing images on their social media accounts, and it looks to have been one hell of a good time.

In attendance were House of 1000 Corpses stars Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Chris Hardwick (“The Talking Dead”), and Jennifer Jostyn; and they took the time to pose for a pretty awesome reunion photo with Rob and his wife.

Check out the photo below, which comes courtesy of Rob Zombie’s Instagram!

On a related note, the sequel to House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, turns 10 this year. Good lord. Time truly does fly.

The Huntsman Loses Frank Darabont but Keeps its Release Date for Now

The long MLK Day weekend kicked off with a bit of sour news for those looking forward to seeing what Frank Darabont (The Mist, “The Walking Dead”) might do with The Huntsman, the prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman that’s currently gearing up for production, but he and the project have parted ways over the usual “creative differences.”

But don’t fret; per Deadline, Universal already has someone in mind to take over, and the film is still on track for an April 22, 2016, release.

The follow-up to 2012’s surprisingly successful spin on the old fairy tale focuses on the returning Chris Hemsworth’s character. Charlize Theron will also be back as the evil witch Ravenna, and Emily Blunt is in talks to join the fun as the villain of the piece.

We should have updates soon so stay tuned!

BBC Three Cancels In the Flesh; Zombies Not in the Budget

Some disappointing news has arrived from across the pond… BBC Three confirmed on its Twitter feed that zombie drama “In the Flesh” has been cancelled. This comes after it was announced last year that the network is moving online. (The move still has to be approved by the BBC Trust, which runs the corporation on behalf of viewers.)

The story revolved around teenager Kieren Walker, played by Luke Newberry, who came back to life after a zombie apocalypse and returned to his small home town, where the locals are grappling with the new world order. Per the BBC, the second season ended last May in the UK with just over half a million people watching the finale, and the show won best television mini-series at the BAFTAs last year with creator Dominic Mitchell receiving a BAFTA for best drama writer at the British Academy Television Craft Awards.  Despite its popularity and acclaim, per the BBC3 tweet, budget constraints are to blame.

RIP, Kieren… for real this time.
