Today it’s Fox’s turn to shine on the Television Critics Association’s 2015 Winter Press Tour, which is winding down in Pasadena, CA; and the network pulled some pretty big names out of its hat for “Scream Queens,” heading our way next fall. They include “True Blood” alum Joe Manganiello (below, left) and Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (below, right), who’s a bit of scream queen in the making herself thanks to Zombieland, Haunter, and the upcoming Maggie with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Per Variety, they’ll be joined by “Glee” star Lea Michele, Keke Palmer (Akeela and the Bee, “Masters of Sex”), and Grammy Award nominee Ariana Grande in a recurring guest-star role.

Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis were previously announced as the leads of “Scream Queens,” a comedy-horror series from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto, the executive producers of “Glee” and “American Horror Story.”

NSFW: UK-Exclusive Honeymoon Clip Gets Nasty

This January 26th, Arrow Films will be throwing the confetti out for director Leigh Janiak’s shocker Honeymoon via a UK DVD and Blu-ray release. To get you primed, we’ve nabbed an exclusive look at a particularly nasty scene from the film that you really don’t want your boss (or anyone else of a nervous or sensitive disposition) to see you watching…

Honeymoon, the chilling directorial debut of Leigh Janiak, features rising stars Rose Leslie (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) and Harry Treadaway (Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful”). Janiak co-wrote the film with Phil Graziadei; Patrick Baker and Esmé Howard produced. Ben Huber and Hanna Brown co-star.

Synopsis:
Young newlyweds Paul (Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon, where the promise of private romance awaits them. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.

Resident Evil – HD Remaster (Video Game)

Resident EvilDeveloped by Capcom

Available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC (reviewed)

Rated M for Mature

For someone who hates soulless remakes, I sure did pick a funny genre to be interested in. In a genre where there are more series that have a reimagining than those that have been peacefully left as they are, Resident Evil stands out as being a particularly egregious offender. The hyperbole I’m known for is unneccessary here, as Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTERED (as it is listed letter for letter on the steam page) is the 8th iteration of the game. 9th if you count the unreleased Game Boy Color version, but I don’t think I have to pad my stats to make my point. Each version has included extras ranging from maybe a couple of guns and costumes to a complete overhaul.

I am going to assume that not all of them came out at full retail price, but I think it is safe to assume that they averaged out to maybe 30 bucks a pop. I know for a fact that the GameCube version was $50 when it came out, and stayed expensive for a good long while (along with the re-releases of Resident evil 2 & 3, which fell far short of the RE1 remake in terms of quality). I’ve heard that the original was also $50, so lets assume the rest came out at the discounted price of $30, since they are charging $20 now for a game that came out in 2002. So, if you had bought every version at release, you would have likely spent $270 on the original Resident Evil

Yes, I realize I said that the game came out in 2002. That is because this is a remake of the 2002 GameCube version, and not the 1996 original. The 2002 GC version and the 2006 DS version stand out as adding a significant amount to the game. The GC version completely overhauled the game, adding new areas, progression, weapons, enemies, bosses, and a complete visual do-over in a new engine. The DS version added a series of touch screen and microphone mini-games, which while not revolutionary were unique enough to make the installments distinct.

This is not one of those installments. The additions that the HD REMASTER version brings to the table are 1) a new control scheme that sucks 2) two new costumes, one for Chris and one for Jill 3) jiggle physics for Jill’s tits. Wow, I’m so glad I paid 20 bucks for wanton bouncing breasts in a new coat of paint. As if they hadn’t disrespected the character enough by turning her from a brunette in police gear into a busty blonde in a cleavage leather bondage suit, now they have to fuck up her appearance in respectable installments.

As for the controls, I played it on the PC, so maybe it works better on the console. I doubt it, since the new scheme moves away from tank controls to directional. This requires a bit of explanation. Resident Evil was designed with tank controls. This means that pushing forward made your character move forward, while pushing left and right made your character rotate in that direction. This is the same as with general direction when the camera follows you like in most games. Forward will always be forward when the camera is behind you. However, Resident Evil uses fixed camera points. Every time you walk off camera, it changes to another preset camera view. This means that pushing up does not always mean forward. In one angle, pushing left might lead you to the left, but in the next angle now you are running straight up. This is why the tank controls worked, since the constantly flipping camera is a cause of consternation and confusion when using WASD.

The graphical update isn’t even worth mentioning. It looks slightly better, but not good enough to be passable by even last gen standards. It still looks like a GameCube game. It is easily one of the most gorgeous GameCube games, but it is not a PS4 or XB1 game.

As for the gameplay, it is Resident Evil. Maybe I should elaborate, but this is Dread Central, not the Christan Movie Review. People know horror here, and people know what Resident Evil is. While the 2002 update presented significant changes, it was still fundamentally the 1996 version. If you have played any of the versions between 1996 and now, you have played Resident Evil. I recommend playing the 2002 version if you have not, but I have trouble saying that this is the version you should play.

At this point, it is easy to find the older versions online. I know I shouldn’t talk about piracy as a critic, but realistically any game over 8 years old is available for free online to anyone that knows what Google and an emulator are. Given that reality, remakes now have to offer significant improvements to be worth the expense versus a free option. This game does not. There is no reason to buy this game if you have experienced previous versions.

The one constantly squawked opinion people have when something like this comes out is “what about the people that never played it before?” Okay, sure, some people are children and don’t know what Resident Evil is. Sure, I guess we can just re-release the same shit every year just incase someone just discovered video games yesterday, and for them I’m sure the existence of Resident Evil is underwhelming. Is Resident Evil a game worth playing? It’s a ridiculous question. Sure, at one point it was. Then they came out with more of them, and better versions of it. Sure, the game totally holds up out of nostalgia factor and uniqueness, but then again everything holds up if you forget about all the advancements since then.

Resident Evil is an interesting museum piece. It was a time when clunky gameplay could be made up for with cool puzzles and a unique atmosphere. The story is Grade A USDA certified bullshit, but then again people haven’t cared about the Resident Evil story since the first utterance of “Jill Sandwitch!” The arsenal is limited, mechanics confusing, and puzzles often deliberately frustrating. This was all fine when it came out, but now it sticks out like a sore thumb. Games are supposed to lead you now, giving you clear indicators of where to go and what to do. Playing Resident Evil feels like brute force, pushing the use button on every door until something sticks. There is a logic to it, but one that requires a significant amount of trial and error rather than intuition.

It really hurts to trash talk Resident Evil, since the GC version is one of my favorite games. I beat that game so many times that I can make my way around that mansion better than my own house. If Resident Evil were a boy, I would go gay for it. But the GC version was a bold, huge update. It was a love letter not only to the fans, but to new players as well. It was 8 years after the original, and Capcom realized that they needed to update the game for a new audience. Well, now it is 12 years after the remake, and what we get is just a minor reskin? That isn’t enough to make the version relevant. Consumers should stop accepting subpar remakes out of nostalgia and because of those younguns that never got to see it in the first place. This game should be worth owning, but it just is a sad cash-grab in a market currently sparse because of a console switch.

There should be a different scale for remakes. Rating it on how good it is is stupid, since usually the game being remade is good. You have to judge the re-release based on how much it makes you lose faith in the industry. Shameless add-nothing installments like this are just sad. This game doesn’t get 2 ½ knives out of 5. This is 2 ½ guns in my mouth out of 5.

Given all of the problems that plagued the World War Z shoot, it’s a wonder that the movie turned out any kind of good. With the sequel on the horizon, we have some new details for you.

IndieWire caught up with the sequel’s screenwriter, Steven Knight, who dropped a rather interesting statement on the site.

“I thought, ‘why not? What fun.’ said Knight on his decision to take a crack at the script. “It’s not quite like the other; we’re starting with clean slate. When they’ve signed off [Paramount and Plan B], we’re on.

So would clean slate indicate that we’re telling another story somewhere else? Will Pitt’s character return. Guess we’ll find out soon enough as the article also states that filming is set to commence this coming October. Stay tuned.

Digging Up the Marrow

Starring, written by, and directed by Adam Green and inspired by the artwork of artist Alex Pardee, the film stars Ray Wise (“Twin Peaks,” X-Men First Class), Will Barratt (Frozen), and a roster full of horror genre favorites and iconic artists all appearing as themselves.

When filmmaker Adam Green receives a package from a strange man (Wise) claiming he can prove that monsters exist, he and his crew are taken on a mysterious, fantastical, and terrifying journey into the shadows deep down under the ground below our feet. Digging Up the Marrow is a documentary-style film that blends reality with fantasy in a way that will leave even the most hardcore skeptics believing in the existence of monsters.

“DIGGING UP THE MARROW is the result of an incredibly rewarding four-year creative collaboration,” said Green. “It’s a very unique film that doesn’t neatly fit into any specific sub-genre that has come before it. We’ve been thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response that MARROW has received at early screenings.”

The monsters in the film are vividly brought to life by visionary American artist and trans-media-artistry pioneer Alex Pardee. Under Green’s ArieScope Pictures, the film was produced by Cory Neal and was financed by Neal and Andrew Mysko’s Hacienda Film Co.

Beetlejuice 2 Filming in 2015? Winona Ryder Confirmed to Return!

This latest tidbit should have fans of the ghost with the most ectoplasing in their pants! In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer Seth Grahame-Smith shared a few new tidbits on Beetlejuice 2, stating that director Tim Burton could make the sequel his next film when work is completed on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

I’ve emailed with Michael Keaton. I know he’s excited about the idea. I know Tim is excited about the idea. Where it stands now is Tim’s got to get ready to make [Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children], and then hopefully we are set, deals are done, and we’re waiting in the wings ready to go right after Peregrine’s wraps up. The ideal timeline is we’re really getting into it toward the end of this year.

It also sounds like Winona Ryder will be back to tally his bananas.

[Burton] was doing press for Big Eyes right before the holiday and was getting the Beetlejuice question and sort of tipped people off that Winona [Ryder] would be back. Which, yes, she will be back.”

And finally…

“I think we landed on the right idea, landed on the right approach. It’s just now making sure that—for me—I don’t want to shit my pants in front of the entire world making a sequel to one of my favorite movies.”

With “American Horror Story: Freak Show’s” finale just a few days away, of course everyone is chomping at the bit for the first details of what’s in store for us in Season 5. Well, at FX’s presentation to the Television Critics Association yesterday, the network’s CEO, John Landgraf, said it will be “very different.” Considering how different each season has been thus far, that’s hardly news, so what else did he reveal?

Per TVLine, Landgraf kept mum regarding the theme, teasing, “I know what it is, but I can’t [say]. I have to let [series creator] Ryan [Murphy] do his thing on that… One of the things I love so much… is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast. I think there’s going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 and Book 5 relative to, say, between Book 3 [Coven] and 4 [Freak Show].

He did throw us a bone when asked about the show returning to the present day: “That’s my hope, yeah,” he answered.

As for Jessica Lange’s prior statement that “Freak Show” would be her last appearance on the show, Landgraf neither confirmed nor denied, stating, “Ryan is really, really independent in how he makes these shows and what he does. So I know the setting, I know something about the characters and something about the tone and the time period, but I don’t actually know the cast yet.”

The “American Horror Story: Freak Show” finale Episode 4.13, “Curtain Call,” airs Wednesday night at 10PM.

If 2006’s The Host taught me anything, it’s that Korean monster movies are absolutely awesome, and we’re happy to report today that a new one is on its way up from the proverbial depths. So read on for all the details!

Rock Icon Kim Fowley Passes; Wants His Corpse Defiled on Girls and Corpses Magazine

Here it is, Dreadies, the weirdest story you’re likely to read today. Music maven Kim Fowley, who scored big on the Billboard charts with songs like “Alley Oop” in the Sixties and many more, has passed; and you’re not gonna believe what he has left in his will.

From the Press Release:
Back in 2012, Kim Fowley (record producing prodigy of The Runaways and a massive fan of Girls and Corpses Magazine, who had attended and hosted dozens of events for the newsstand magazine) decided what he wanted to do after he died. He wished to: “Have [his] freshly dead body photographed for the cover of Girls and Corpses Magazine with a couple hot fetish models.” The photoshoot was planned to take place upon his death and a photographer was hired. The plan was set, and Kim, who was gravely ill for several years, made sure his attorney put this into his will.

Girls and Corpses Publisher/Deaditor-In-Chief Robert Steven Rhine explains: “This was Kim’s personal dying wish to be on the cover of Girls and Corpses Magazine when he died and then burned on a funeral pyre in New Orleans. At first I thought it was a bad idea because of the possible negative publicity. But people have crazy wishes in their wills and often have their ashes scattered in odd places as their last dying wishes, so who am I to say what Kim, or anyone else, should do with their dead body”?

But now that Fowley passed away January 16th, the status of his body is still in question after Kim allegedly remarried months before his death. The question should be resolved shortly by the estate attorney in coming days.

“But make no mistake; Kim wanted this in the worst way, to be on Girls and Corpses Magazine’s cover, and he was a great friend to me so I’d like to accommodate his last wish,” says Robert “Corpsy” Rhine, adding, “Either way the next issue will be ‘deadicated’ to Kim Fowley, and we are running the last thing he ever wrote, which is absolutely wild, in Girls and Corpses Magazine, Kim titled the article ‘Death of a Devil Dog.’”

Broken River Books Kickstarter Promises Twelve Months of Great Reading

I haven’t read as much of the Broken River Books catalogue as I’d like (yet), but that didn’t stop me from plunking down for a seriously cool Kickstarter opportunity today.

For those who don’t know, Broken River Books is a publisher of crime fiction, and they released some great books last year. They have another promising slate lined up for March 2015, called March Madness, in which they aim to release 12 books on the same day. The books are ready to go, but Broken River Books needs a little bit of your help to get this done the right way.

You can find more details in the video below, and if you’re interested, check out their recently launched Kickstarter to see if it’s something you’re into.

Here’s the thing. We don’t cover a lot of Kickstarters at Dread Central. If we did, we’d be posting dozens of them each week, and we just don’t have the bandwidth or time to do that. But I believe in this project because, frankly, I like what the publisher’s done so far and feel as though we need more high quality fiction in the world. Broken River Books does this.

I’m telling you guys about this because it’s more than an opportunity to help an awesome independent publisher; it’s a chance for you to enjoy some terrific reading material. You know it’s good, folks… I backed it!

SUM1 is produced by Alvart (Antibodies, Case 39, Pandorum), Sigi Kamml (1 1⁄2 Brothers, Banklady), and Susa Kusche (Run Boy Run, Shahada). Director of photography is Hagen Bogdanski (The Lives of Others, The Young Victoria).
