Here’s the thing… you know those houses that you’ve seen that have become dilapidated over the years because they’ve been abandoned? Maybe it would be a good idea to consider leaving them alone instead of restoring them to their former glory!

People just don’t listen. Such is the case with the new flick Altar. The flick, starring Matthew Modine, Olivia Williams and Antonia Clarke, hits DVD and Digital HD next month on February 17th. Nick Willing directs.

Altar follows a family who move into a timeworn, dilapidated country mansion in order to restore its former splendor. But in the process they awaken the ghosts of the house’s original inhabitants whose curse still looms darkly over the haunted estate. What follows is a hair-raising ordeal of spectral apparitions and demonic possession that threatens to destroy the lives of the desperate protagonists in this early realm and beyond.

A quick sneak peek has crept in for Thursday night’s mid-season return of “The Vampire Diaries,” Episode 6.11, entitled “Woke Up with a Monster.” In this clip Liv is in Damon’s bedroom – those Mystic Falls girls just never learn!

CONTROLLING YOUR MAGIC — More powerful than ever, Kai (guest star Chris Wood) holds Elena (Nina Dobrev) captive while he learns to control his newly acquired magic.  At the Salvatore mansion, Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) and Alaric (Matt Davis) try to prepare Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) for the impending merge ceremony with Kai, but they quickly realize Jo is weaker than they thought.

After bringing Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) home from the hospital, Caroline (Candice Accola) travels with Stefan (Paul Wesley) to North Carolina in search of a cure for her mother’s cancer.  Meanwhile, Stefan, who has his own intentions for traveling to North Carolina, is caught off guard when Enzo (Michael Malarkey) shows up demanding to know what Stefan is hiding.

Lastly, when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) discovers Elena has been kidnapped by Kai, he is forced to rethink his strategy after an unexpected visitor throws a wrench into his plan.

Ninjas vs. Monsters (UK DVD)

Ninjas vs. MonstersStarring Daniel Ross, Cory Okouchi, Jay Saunders, Devon Brookshire, P.J. Megaw

Directed by Justin Timpane

Distributed by Left Films

The pizza-loving gang of mystically-powered American ninjas from Justin Timpane’s Ninjas vs. Zombies and Ninjas vs. Vampires are back to round out their trilogy in Ninjas vs. Monsters. This time, sword and gun-wielding chums Kyle, Cole, Aaron, Alex, Eric and Randall find themselves forced to face off against some of history’s most famous monsters including Dracula, Victor Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolfman, and a trio of assailant-conjuring witches – all bent on destroying the world.

First of all, if you haven’t seen the two films that precede this entry in Timpane’s mythology, you’re going to want to rectify that before sitting down in front of Ninjas vs. Monsters – for two reasons.

Firstly, there’s quite a lot of narrative and character background that isn’t fully explained (and some not explained whatsoever) in this particular film, so it does rely on the viewer having previous knowledge of the exploits and clashes of the characters involved. Without this prior knowledge, a number of key moments will fall flat for anyone not already invested in them, or aware of certain motivations.

Secondly, Ninjas vs. Monsters carries with it a certain style – a balance of seriousness and comedy surrounded by amateur martial arts that carries a particular spark to it. It’s this spark which manages to encourage you to overlook the (many) rough parts of the production. This same spark is at the core of both of the previous films in the series, so if you haven’t seen those then go back and watch Ninjas vs. Zombies. If you can’t manage to look through the roughness of that feature (and it is much more rough in terms of production value than the entries that follow it) and find it in some way endearing, then forget about it… Ninjas vs. Monsters is unlikely to change your mind.

Focusing on this particular entry, the most striking element for those familiar with the previous films will be the improved production values and demonstrably more confident direction by Timpane. In keeping with the chosen style, it also inherits much of the problems of the previous entries – for example fight scenes that are often poorly choreographed, visibly sped-up and edited to size in such a manner that the sense of combat flow is interrupted, leaving the fisticuffs little more than a series of shots showing a certain move, with a disorienting sense of space and positioning.

The reliance on film and nerd culture references is at once amusing and infuriating. You’ll find that a quote, meta reference or visual gag is only ever mere moments away throughout. Before the film is over, you’ll find references to Mallrats, Firefly, The Monster Club, Scarface, Wayne’s World, Predator, video games such as Metroid and many more. Some work, others feel so shoe-horned in that they only induce a disappointed cringe.

Yet even when the references miss the mark, you can rarely find yourself truly hating Ninjas vs. Monsters due to that aforementioned core spark. There’s a sense of fun that runs through all of these films – like everyone behind and in front of the cameras are a bunch of friends truly doing their best to make something that not only entertains them entirely, but that they can be proud of creating. An independent spirit – willing to just go hell for leather for what they want without pandering or appealing to anyone but themselves and their fans. That’s admirable.

But it isn’t quite enough to give the film a complete pass.

Performances here range from very good (Daniel Ross stands out, once again, as snarky wannabe-badass ninja Kyle, while Dan Guy’s Randall provides much of the comic relief despite a rocky performance) to ultra-creaky and hammy as all hell (Sam Lukowski’s Dracula seems to have stepped straight from a high school drama class, complete with old-school accent, while Elliot Kashner’s Frankenstein – the doctor himself turned into one of his own creations – is simply much too young, and his delivery too frequently off, to be convincing).

The cinematography is of a professional quality, but the increased visual fidelity above Ninjas vs. Zombies reveals obvious issues with the prosthetic effects (of which there are many!), for example some rather poor blending in Frankenstein’s facial appliances, or the obviously rubber bones and gristle of the Mummy’s costume. The digital effects fare better for a low-budget work; let’s just say that Timpane and co. have more than gotten their worth out of their Adobe After Effects license fee!

And yet again, I’ll come back to that core energy of the film. Despite all of these problems, and a script that is far more ambitious than could ever hope to be realised to the fullest with the resources at hand, Ninjas vs. Monsters remains an entertaining diversion. Timpane and co. appear to have put their all into this, and there are a number of surprising developments – including some rather brutal and shockingly unexpected character deaths – to keep things lively.

So my caveat will be this: Go back and watch the first two films. If you find them enjoyable – the witty scripts and dynamic characters allowing you to look past the limitations – then Ninjas vs. Monsters is for you. If you don’t get along with them, then stay away from this one – you’ll only be wasting your time. This is very much a film made by people who love what they’re creating for people who already love what they have created previously. If you aren’t in that group, then forget it. If you’re somewhere in the middle, then give it a spin.

For a film with such a niche target fan base, Left Films surprisingly don’t skimp on the extras at all. First up is about 10 minutes of cast audition recordings, followed by over 20 minutes of deleted and extended scenes. After that, there’s a selection of comedic alternative endings – some of which are very funny indeed and had me laughing like a loon. There are a selection of trailers for the Ninjas vs… trilogy, a trailer for upcoming documentary Trekoff: The Motion Picture, a music video and a tribute to executive producer Brian Anderson, who sadly passed away before this film saw release.

Judging by the comments made by director Justin Timpane during the “Trekoff” commentary track accompanying the film, Brian appears to have been a brilliant, talented individual and a real loss. For those not in the know, “Trekoff” is a podcast run by Timpane that focuses on all things Star Trek and geekdom, so this particular commentary takes on the form of one of their podcasts. It’s lively and fun, if a little overwhelming in its constant energy. Alongside that we have another commentary with Timpane and producer Michael C. Dougherty which is consistently interesting and really makes the time fly by.

All in all, a great release from Left Films that should make fans of the film, and series, very happy indeed.

NBC Greenlights 10-Episode Futuristic Dramedy Apocalypse

$

NBC TV NetworkWe’re not sure how Dread-worthy this potential new TV series will wind up being, but it does sound up our alley so here are the early details on “Apocalypse” from NBC and Sky TV.

From the Press Release:
Rob Lowe (pictured below), Megan Mullally, Jenna Fischer, and Mathew Baynton are set to star in the new NBC hourlong dramedy “Apocalypse,” a co-production with Sky TV scheduled for 10 episodes.

“Apocalypse” is a bold, adrenaline-fueled series about the last days of mankind. Set against a backdrop of apocalyptic chaos, the story follows an extended family whose lives start to intersect in the most unexpected ways. Their renewed connections are triggered by the news that a comet is on an unavoidable collision course toward Earth.

Characters include a rebellious priest, an unhinged white supremacist, a mild-mannered bank manager, a germ-phobic cyber-terrorist, a five-star general, and a child who (possibly) rose from the dead. Some of them are destined to make it to a bunker deep beneath the ground and as a result will become the unlikely (and frankly, somewhat unsuitable) future of mankind.

“This is an out-of-the-box and wholly original project that offers just the right combination of both high drama and humor,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “With a stellar cast that includes Rob Lowe, Megan Mullally, Jenna Fischer, and Mathew Baynton — all four who know how to expertly balance those lines — we’re ready to dive into the ‘Apocalypse.’”

The series also stars Paterson Joseph and Joel Fry. The creator and lead writer is Iain Hollands (“Beaver Falls”) with Michael Engler (“30 Rock”) taking up the reins of lead director for the first two episodes. Commissioned by Sky 1 Director Adam MacDonald; Sky’s Head of Drama, Anne Mensah; and Commissioning Editor Cameron Roach, the series from Working Title TV and Bigballs Films will commence filming in January.

The executive producers for the series are Juliette Howell, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Lynn Horsford for Working Title TV; Andrew Conrad for Bigballs Films; and Cameron Roach and Lizzie Gray for Sky. The series will be produced by Polly Buckle, Nick Pitt, and Susie Liggat.  NBCUniversal International Television Production operates a joint television production venture with Working Title Television. NBCUniversal International Television Distribution will distribute the series worldwide.

The Stranger Attracts IFC Midnight

Another Eli Roth-produced film, The Stranger, has nabbed itself some distribution via IFC Midnight, and we have a look at the trailer and artwork for you right here via Latino Review.

Guillermo Amoedo’s The Stranger stars Luis Gnecco, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, and Aaron Burns.

Synopsis:
Amoedo shows a deft ability to turn a bloodthirsty monster movie on its head. Slow-burn, character-driven THE STRANGER takes its time, building the tension through occasional flashbacks and having the audience sympathize with Peter, who grew up not knowing his father.

Peter, like the audience, is kept largely in the dark about his father’s motives or even what he is… because he’s certainly not human. What is apparent is the chaos his dad’s return has on the small town, especially a member of the police force and his violence-prone son. THE STRANGER is ultimately about family, the legacy we pass on to our children, and the lengths to which we go to protect and ensure their survival, no matter how dark and deadly they might become.

Scream Factory Developing Stigmata; Kino Travels Back to the Seventies Island of Dr. Moreau

$

The best part of seeing what titles companies like Scream Factory, Kino Lorber, Scorpion, Blue Underground, and Synapse keep announcing for upcoming Blu-ray releases of late is seeing whether the movie in question is actually a forgotten gem people have been clamoring for a Blu-ray of, a forgotten gem waiting to be rediscovered, or a mostly forgotten film that seems more deserving of being included in a Mill Creek multi-movie pack found in the Walmart $5 bin.

Today’s announcement from Scream Factory that the 1999 Patricia Arquette supernatural chiller Stigmata is getting a digital upgrade this summer seems to fall squarely in that “ummmm… why?” category. Be honest. Hearing this news is probably the first time in ages you even remember this movie existing at all.

But for fans of the film and those who haven’t seen it but are willing to give it a shot on Blu-ray, Scream Factory will be bringing it to HD again on May 12th. Here’s what they had to say on Facebook:

Starring Patricia Arquette (recent Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actress in Boyhood), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects, “In Treatment”), and Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Tomorrow Never Dies), the movie was a surprise hit at the time of its release, grossing nearly $90M at the box office internationally.

No details on extras at this time, but you can expect most (if not all) extras that were on the prior 2000 MGM DVD release to be ported over. We will keep you posted closer to street date. Pre-order links will go up next month.

Stigmata

Over at Kino Lorber Studio Classics, they’ve dug deeper into the vault to announce the 1977 big screen adaptation of H.G. Wells’ Island of Dr. Moreau will be bowing on Blu-ray this June. Unlike the notorious Nineties version, this one has mostly been forgotten, little more than a curiosity from that period in the 1970s when a multitude of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne stories were being turned into feature films.

The Seventies version stars Burt Lancaster, Michael York, Nigel Davenport, Richard Basehart, and Barbara Carrera. Somehow, shockingly, Doug McClure did not get cast in this film.

No other details are available at this time so stay tuned!

More casting news has come in for the upcoming Frankenstein-themed show “The Frankenstein Chronicles,” as Deadline is reporting that a deluge of actors have signed on to join the previously announced Sean Bean.

Anna Maxwell Martin (Philomena, “The Bletchley Circle”), Charlie Creed-Miles (“Peaky Blinders”), Ed Stoppard (“The Musketeers”), Elliot Cowan (“Da Vinci’s Demons”), Hugh O’Conor (Killing Bono), Joe Tucker (Bronson), Kate Dickie (“Game of Thrones”), Lalor Roddy (Hunger), Patrick Fitzsymons (“Game of Thrones”), Richie Campbell (“Inspector Lewis”), Robbie Gee (“Young Dracula”), Ryan Sampson (“Doctor Who”), Samuel West (“Mr Selfridge”), Shaun Mason (“Cilla”), Steve Wilson (“Ripper Street”), Steven Berkoff (“Witches of East End”), Stuart Graham (“The Fall”), Tom Ward (“Death Comes to Pemberley”), and Vanessa Kirby (Everest) have all joined the cast.

The series hails from Emmy-nominated director and writer Benjamin Ross (RKO 281, The Young Poisoner’s Handbook) and writer Barry Langford (Torte Bluma). It will air on ITV’s subscription channel ITV Encore, the first original drama for the pay outlet since it launched in 2014. Shooting starts in Northern Ireland on January 26th.

Set in 1827 London, the drama begins when Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel recruits Inspector John Marlott (Bean) after a successful operation to apprehend a gang of opium smugglers. When Marlott makes the shocking discovery of a corpse that’s actually a crude assembly of body parts arranged in a grotesque parody of a human form, he is tasked by Peel with tracking the perpetrator. As he investigates, Marlott discovers that what he’s dealing with is more horrific than he could possibly have imagined.

How that ties in logistically with the previous rumors that “Fear the Walking Dead” would take place during the early days of the zombie apocalypse isn’t clear, but we have faith the powers-that-be will figure out a way.  Stay tuned for more as it comes!

Digging Up the Marrow

Starring, written by, and directed by Adam Green and inspired by the artwork of artist Alex Pardee, the film stars Ray Wise (“Twin Peaks,” X-Men First Class), Will Barratt (Frozen), and a roster full of horror genre favorites and iconic artists all appearing as themselves.

When filmmaker Adam Green receives a package from a strange man (Wise) claiming he can prove that monsters exist, he and his crew are taken on a mysterious, fantastical, and terrifying journey into the shadows deep down under the ground below our feet. Digging Up the Marrow is a documentary-style film that blends reality with fantasy in a way that will leave even the most hardcore skeptics believing in the existence of monsters.

“DIGGING UP THE MARROW is the result of an incredibly rewarding four-year creative collaboration,” said Green. “It’s a very unique film that doesn’t neatly fit into any specific sub-genre that has come before it. We’ve been thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response that MARROW has received at early screenings.”

The monsters in the film are vividly brought to life by visionary American artist and trans-media-artistry pioneer Alex Pardee. Under Green’s ArieScope Pictures, the film was produced by Cory Neal and was financed by Neal and Andrew Mysko’s Hacienda Film Co.
