Director Found for Fox’s Frankenstein Pilot

Earlier this month we learned that Fox picked up potential new series “Frankenstein,” ordering a pilot episode of the show. Today a director has been found as the monster gets ready to rise once more. Read on!

Per Deadline, Michael Cuesta has been tapped to direct the pilot, written and executive produced by “Crisis” and “Life” creator Rand Ravich and executive produced by “Homeland” and “Tyrant” executive producer Howard Gordon.

Described as a grounded sci-fi drama that takes inspiration from the basic Mary Shelley mythology of a man brought back to life by scientists playing god, “Frankenstein” centers on Ray Pritchard, a morally corrupt retired cop who is given a second chance at life when he is brought back from the dead. Now younger and stronger, Pritchard will have to choose between his old temptations and his new sense of purpose.

20th Century Fox TV and Gordon’s studio-based Teakwood Lane Productions produce.

Hit British Series Black Mirror Getting American Adaptation

Often compared to “The Twilight Zone,” the British series “Black Mirror” has proven itself a big hit here in the States ever since being put up for streaming on Netflix. It was inevitable that we Americans would someday make our own version, and it looks like we’re getting ready to do just that.

Variety reports that a U.S. rendition of “Black Mirror” is in the works, as revealed earlier this week by the new leaders of Endemol Shine North America. Co-CEO Charlie Corwin broke the news, though he’s remaining tight-lipped about the plans.

Corwin declined to elaborate other than to say that “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker and producer Annabel Jones “have really touched on something, and I agree – we need more.”

If you’re a Netflix member, you can currently stream the first two seasons of the original British anthology series, which delves deep into the dark side of life and technology.

Well, you just never know what you’ll stumble upon when doing a little digging on the interwebs. While doing some legwork for our recent story on The Enfield Haunting, we came to notice that the IMDB page for The Conjuring 2 had been updated with a new title – The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist.

According to a friend of Lorraine Warren via Horror.wikia, Warren had this to say about the new film:

“The case file they’re looking at [occurs] in the late ’70s and centers on two sisters in Enfield, England, who were allegedly possessed. Warren said she personally saw them levitate and even saw one of the sister[s] dematerialize in front of her only to be found 20 minutes later stuffed into an oversized fuse box, contorted in such an unnatural way that they couldn’t have replicated it if they tried. She also said that the demon spoke directly to her husband on many occasions. Warren cited this case as one of the most terrifying experiences of her career.”

David Leslie Johnson is rewriting The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist from an earlier draft director James Wan penned with Chad and Carey Hayes with revisions by Eric Heisserer.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Look for The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist in theatres on June 10, 2016.

Winner of three 2015 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Direction, The Babadook has earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Evil Dead – Alternate Footage Surfaces Online

Here’s a bit of a shocker… Fede Alvarez’s 2013 remake of Evil Dead, produced by Sam Raimi, had its UK television premiere this past week. Sounds like no big deal, right? But what if we told you that this premiere was in its totally uncut form, featuring at least four scenes of deleted and alternate footage? Yep, we can see you perking up from here.

Included was an extended ending in which Jane Levy’s one-armed Mia stumbles on down the road and asks for help from a stranger, the possessed Mia singing from the cellar door, and Shiloh Fernandez’s moment with a chainsaw.

God forbid we get these goodies here. Then again, maybe we’ll be double dipping on Blu-ray?

Check them out below, and thanks to Bloody Disgusting for first putting out the word.

IFC Midnight has nailed down the rights to the flick Reversal, which enjoyed its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Read on for the skinny!

From the Press Release:
IFC Midnight announced today from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival that the company is acquiring U.S. rights to Dark Factory Entertainment’s gritty revenge thriller REVERSAL. The film is directed by JM Cravioto and stars breakout actress Tina Ivlev and Richard Tyson. The screenplay was written by Rock Shaink, Jr., and Keith Kjornes. Dark Factory’s Daniel Posada and Rodolfo Marquez produced alongside Alex Garcia of AG Studios. REVERSAL premiered in the “Park City at Midnight” section of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

REVERSAL is about a young woman, Eve (Tina Ivlev), who fights back and manages to escape a malicious abductor. However, after discovering she may not be the only victim, Eve unravels a darker truth and decides to turn the tables on her captor.

“IFC Midnight is the perfect partner for this film and has a wealth of experience in distributing elevated genre titles,” says Dark Factory’s CEO Daniel Posada. “We’re very happy to join the IFC Midnight family and can’t wait for U.S. audiences to gain access to this film.”

The deal was negotiated by Sean Berney, Manager of Acquisitions for IFC Midnight, with Paradigm on behalf of the filmmakers.

REVERSAL is the first film under the Dark Factory banner. The production company recently filmed One Shot, starring Topher Grace and Anne Heche, in Mexico and plans to continue making English language films in its home country. Dark Factory has also lined up a second horror film with JM Cravioto, 100 Cries of Horror, which is slated for production this year.

IFC Midnight is a sister label to IFC Films and Sundance Selects and is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc.

Coverage and Exclusive Photos – Ouija Blu-ray Launch Event

Hollywood’s famous Boardner’s bar was transformed into Ouija Boardner’s last night as Universal Studios, the filmmakers, and genre tastemakers joined forces (including supernatural forces!) to celebrate the impending launch of the horror hit flick Ouija.

In the movie, following the sudden death of their dear friend Debbie, a group of teens finds an antique Ouija board in her room and tries to use it to say goodbye. Little do they know, they’ll soon be saying goodbye to each other as a malevolent entity uses the board as a portal into their mortal existence and picks them off one-by-one.

The night kicked off with a scavenger hunt on the streets of Hollywood as teams followed clues which ultimately led them back to the heavily carved wood doors of the famous watering hole (it’s not only one of the last places The Black Dahlia drank before meeting her ultimate doom, it’s also said to be haunted by a horde of restless spirits).

Once inside, the scavengers found Boardner’s transformed into a den of delights including an open bar, tasty treats – not the least of which was a huge cake decorated up as a Ouija board (and there was even a huge butcher’s knife to cut it with… glad everyone there was a fan of the movie!) – and a display of historic spirit boards dating back to the 1800s. The film’s historical advisor, Robert Murch, was on hand to lay hands on the planchette and give séance demonstrations. (We took part, but it seems we got an illiterate ghost who couldn’t spell… or is “znvjvnkjgifjgpob” a word?)

Speaking of words, we had a few with Jason Blum of Blumhouse, who said as its producer, he was thrilled to see such a great response to the film. The movie’s director, first-time feature helmer Stiles White, told us that aside from a lot less Tawny Kitaen, Ouija is different from all other talking board movies (such as the most famous one, Witchboard) because it was backed by Hasbro. (Although the Ouija board was popularized as a parlor game by William Fuld, and later Parker Brothers to whom he sold the trademark, Harbro didn’t own the patent and name until 1991.)

We also had a chat with one of the pretty young things who stars in the film, Bianca A. Santos. (Yes, as we mentioned above: It’s a bevy impossibly beautiful teens vs. the ugly underworld – as usual. However, we will concede that Ouija is one of the more entertaining and better-made PG-13’s in the canon.) Santos said she was thrilled to be a part of a horror movie that’s smarter than most – she loved the fact that the characters say and do things that are believable (under the circumstances!) and that there’s also a mystery at the heart of the story.

Be sure to look for the Ouija DVD and Blu-ray everywhere in February 3, 2015. Extras include “The Spirit Board: An Evolution”, “Adapting the Fear”, and “Icon of the Unknown.”

We had a look at The House of Last Things (review) for you a couple of years ago, and now we’re happy to report that the flick is getting set to make its home video debut on February 10th via the Revolver Group.

Michael Bartlett directs. Lindsey Haun, Blake Berris, RJ Mitte, Randy Schulman, Diane Dalton, Micah Nelson, Michele Mariana, and Moreen Littrell star.

Synopsis:
ALAN (Randy Schulman) is a successful classical music critic, as reflected in his spacious Portland home. His wife, SARAH (Diane Dalton), is an obsessively grieving woman, struggling with an unspoken tragedy, even after months of institutionalized therapy. Upon Sarah’s release, Alan forces her into a trip to Italy. He has already arranged for a house sitter in KELLY (Lindsey Haun), a young woman lonely for commitment and the better things in life. Kelly is quickly joined by her younger brother, TIM (RJ Mitte), and her trashy boyfriend, JESSE (Blake Berris).

When Jesse suddenly decides to kidnap eight-year-old ADAM from the supermarket, an act that seems too cruel even for him, it isn’t long before the trio find themselves drawn into a web of disturbing revelations and caught in a netherworld between hallucination and reality. Both the future – and the past – are far less certain in a HOUSE OF LAST THINGS.

Father and Son (Short)

Father and SonStarring Jaden Eller, John C. Forman, Gabrielle Phillips

Directed by Ben Deka, Julien Deka

There comes a point when you don’t really feel the need for a 90+-minute feature in order to entertain. If the premise is strong and the characters appear to be in some semblance of order, grouped with a flashy series of visuals, then a short presentation is just what the witch doctor has prescribed to provide a brief respite from overtaxed eyeballs.

From the Deka brothers (Ben and Julien) comes Father & Son, a quickie tale about, you guessed it!, a father and son exorcism team that appear to have their differences, according to the first scene of the film. William (John C. Forman) is all about doing the Lord’s work and helping to cleanse the evil that resides in poor souls, while his son, Jake (Jaden Eller), has clearly become less than enthused with the idea of charging people insane fees to come into their homes and exorcise the demons. As the two mend their fences (or so you’d think), they head off to save a young girl whose mother believes is possessed, and as their actions yet again prove to be fruitful (and monetarily rewarding), afterwards Jake decides that he is finished with this business and opts to go his own way.

As you would imagine, William is none too pleased with Jake’s choice, and we’ve got ourselves a tiny family feud on our hands… only problem, this is anything but tiny. From here I’m going to leave you all stranded at the onramp, simply because this short is only 39 minutes long, and it would be a measure less than torture to spit out the entire set of details. What I can say is that the remainder of the film doesn’t really come as a surprise, and for lack of a better word, I was left slightly underwhelmed with the conclusion, which is disappointing because from the get-go, I truly had high hopes for this short. Forman’s performance of the elder William looks a little hammy, especially with the way his lines were delivered, and Eller’s portrayal of Jake was simply baseline – no real ups or downs to speak of.

Visually speaking, I was impressed with how the Deka brothers shot the film with the night scenes framing each character perfectly and giving the look of pure evil just within their reach. If the chance comes along and you have the opportunity to give this a look, by all means do so; but just like any family dinner, don’t stick around for dessert because there’s bound to be a brawl before it happens.

Bind (2014)

BindStarring Lynn Csontos, Daren Matheson, Mackenzie Mowat

Directed by Dan Walton and Dan Zachary

I’ll give credit where credit is due – in the middle of a movie that has me at the brink of plucking my own eyes out in order to save myself from any more ocular trauma, and then to reverse itself to finish off in a respectable fashion isn’t always the easiest task to pull off, but Bind should have an asterisk by its name for this specific reason.

Co-directed by Dan Walton and Dan Zachary, the movie brings the viewer up close to an opening scene that will shock (and possibly offend) some more delicate viewers as the unthinkable happens at a little girl’s birthday party – one little lass in particular is possessed by the evil spirit residing in the home where the party is being thrown, and long story short, she uses the cake knife for more than just serving slices to her young attendees. while the action isn’t shown, it’s what’s implied and the aftermath that’s strewn out that makes it unsettling. Okay, so we’re off to a good start – let’s keep this murder train rolling!

As we distance ourselves from the tragic events that happened a short while ago, we’re introduced to a family that has interest in the home where the heinous crime took place – and this is not just any family…no, no, no. This foursome is staggeringly annoying. So let’s meet the vexatious new homeowners, shall we? We’ve got the (interchangeable) patriarch of the family: Ben (Daren Matheson); his doting (and at times, clueless) wife, Carol (Lynn Csontos); the elder daughter, Zoe (Mackenzie Mowat), who’s married to her cell phone, shellacks her eyes with the darkest of goth makeup, and has an attitude towards EVERYONE within a 5 mile-radius that would make her an excellent candidate for a random shove into traffic; and finally the moppet of the clan, darling little Alyssa (Eliza Faria), who only wants some attention, but when she speaks, the tolerance levels shrink to a cellular tier.

Now that the “fam” has been established, let’s delve into this house of horrors that has them so intrigued. For one, the location is absolutely serene, and the price really couldn’t be beat, but someone forgot to mention the evil, possessive, and murderous revenant that resides in the abandoned orphanage. Did I just say abandoned orphanage? Well, it’s a good thing I did because our family in question has obviously lacked the intelligence to sense that something was wrong with all the noises in the night, the moving furniture, and the fact that the big, cuddly dog that wouldn’t hurt a fly refuses to enter the home. While we’re at it, I’d like to take a moment to offer a brief dose of insight to the future horror movie families that have moved into that big ol’ spooky house – when your youngest child stops you on the FIRST DAY of the move into the new digs and tells you there is an old woman in the house that has been looking out the window at her, please don’t chalk it up to an overactive imagination – cancel the sale, PRONTO. This rule also includes the crazy lady who pleads with you not to move in, as your family faces “grave danger.” A lot of trouble can be alleviated with such an action.

That is all…now back to the review.

Upon ignoring all supposable warnings, our dysfunctional foursome moves in anyway and suffers a fate that could be described loosely as “Amityville-ish.” Dad gets overtaken at times by the vengeful spirit (sporting a look reminiscent to a demon from The Gravedancers), tries to beat the tar out of his wife, and performs emergency veterinary surgery (with an axe) on the big old cuddly family dog. Only after said attack (followed by a brief pursuit by Papa with a reciprocating saw) does Mom think it’s a good time to get herself and the kids out of dodge. It turns out that the slimy best friend of the family had an ace up his sleeve when selling the home, but you’ll have to watch the rest of the movie to see what it is. If not for the end of the presentation, which does offer a nice conclusion, this movie would be brought to its knees by a plot that’s been seen way too many times and horrendous acting on all parts.

In conclusion, Bind is one of those films that will tie you up and beat you about the head and shoulders with reckless abandon for an hour and 15 minutes, and that’s the bad part. The good part is that the movie is around an hour and 25 minutes, so salvation isn’t too far off.

Demon's RookDirected by James Sizemore

Sometimes, The Dark Lords of horror smile upon me. As far as my station on the Dread Central totem pole, I’m somewhere just above the cursed Indian skeleton the whole thing was constructed to warn away from. While I generally get some pretty good games to go over, my knowledge of movies is just above enthusiast, and doesn’t close to match the near encyclopedic knowledge of my superiors. Next to my movie watching station is a knee high stack of movies of little to know importance, as hard to watch as they are to care about a timely review for. This is why the House of Bad review come out far after even the most obsessive horror fan cared about its release, with many other half baked reviews in an indeterminate status. I’m basically the Duke Nukem Forever of horror writers, piles on piles of half-finished short stories to attest to my general laziness and ease of distraction. To be fair, my mountains of porn aren’t gonna masturbate to themselves.

This time, when being handed Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (review), my dear sweet editor took pitty on me, and also handed me a copy of The Demon’s Rook. Whereas the first was the uncomfortable equivalent of jizzy leg hair, The Demon’s Rook fired it’s load at full arc with firework streamers and full fanfare into a money shot of win. The differences between the two films could not be more jarring, with the shortcomings of the first being the lovable ridiculousness of the second.

The reason I compare the two movies other than proximity of time I watched them is that the two movies were both crowdfunded. Whereas Da Sweet Blood of Jesus managed to burn $1,418,910 movies, The Demon’s Rook molded a $7,000 dollar campaign into an hour and a half of pure splattery bliss. Da Sweet Blood of Jesus was overwrought symbolism with little care to making the film fun or watchable. The shots were certainly pretty, with high quality cameras and lighting that close to a million and a half dollars can afford. The Demon’s Rook looks like it was made in the 80’s in both effects and video quality.

I can understand being turned off of the movie in the first 15 minutes. The Demon’s Rook’s first 15 minutes are kind of awkward, with a bad child actor, grainy visuals, and confusing narrative providing a poor intro to an amazingly entertaining practical effect splatterfest. Stick with it, and the story starts making sense in a slow burn while the action explodes like a backdraft.

I can’t really discuss the plot too much, since the slow unveil is part of what makes it great, and I actually liked this movie so I won’t just go spoiling it willy nilly. The framework is that a young boy named Roscoe is visited at night by a demon named Dimwos, who has been telling him dark secrets that are reflected in the child’s crayon drawings. We briefly meet the parents and neighbor, and after the parents are mysteriously incinerated the child is led into a glowing hole in the middle of the forest. Fast forward to years later, and Roscoe, now a man, is crawling out of the hole. Mostly naked and hair long, something is amiss, but the film keeps the details tight until the mid movie revelation.

Seemingly pursuing Roscoe are three demons, who for the rest of the film will use their various powers to kill people in every way imaginable. Characters will be transformed into demons, possessed into murdering each other, eaten by zombies, ripped in half, cranial exploded, and sexy demon mind controlled to death. Characters will be introduced, slightly developed, and swiftly murdered. Don’t expect many characters to make it to the end of the movie. Almost all character development is for the purpose of you putting a character to the face currently being removed.

Meanwhile, Roscoe works up the courage to use his demon powers to fight back against the darkness. You have to respect a movie where a man’s Super Saiyan power up light blast is enough to melt a demon’s head. I’m not sure if there is some kind of internal logic as to what demons have what powers, but I really couldn’t care less. Maybe one of the demons was the possession one and one was the cranial explosion one, but seriously it all just blurs together in a cacophony of violence. It is like that video from hell in Event Horizon extended into a whole movie.

On top of that, the plot is enjoyable. Simple, dumb, and creative, it is the perfect vehicle for the movie to ride on. It is enough to give the movie a point, and never did I feel like things just didn’t make sense. It didn’t write itself into a corner with too many rules for the demon universe, and gave just enough for it all to have more purpose than spectacle. I wouldn’t read the novelization, but it doesn’t need or try to be.

There’s nothing else I can say without gushing. All of the general concepts are covered, and anything I say at this point would just be me giddily fan boy squealing about my favorite scenes. There is so much to like about this movie, that anyone looking to turn their brain off and have a old school practical effect good time is gonna have fun. I wouldn’t show my mother this movie, but at this point I’m having to stretch to find reasons not to like it. Other than the awkward and slow start, the movie is a constant stream of awesome. A must watch for any true horror fan.
