Evolve Devolves into a Pointless Cashgrab

You know, never in my life did a video game involving four hunters and one giant beastie make me sick to my stomach before, but Evolve does just that. And it’s not even because the game is bad… in fact, it’s fun teaming up with friends and hunting giant monsters. There’s just a severe lack of content. Or rather, the content is there… you just have to pay for it separately.

Since the launch of next gen, there have been many annoying things about this new age of gaming. I remember the days when Day One patches were a rarity. Now they’re the norm. I also remember the days when buying a Season Pass would get you all of a game’s downloadable content – or at the very least the lion’s share of it – at a discounted price. Nowadays, if you don’t read the fine print, you’re likely to get screwed. Case in point: Evolve, which just hit store shelves yesterday at an MSRP of $59.99+ tax. I really have to call bullshit on this one.

So you get the game, right? Cool! You run home and find out immediately that there’s no real single player campaign to speak of. Fair enough. It’s not that kind of game, and you should have known that going in. We live in the age of the Internet, and you should always do some research before you buy.

Anyway… the game’s Season Pass. The Hunting Season Pass contains Magma skin for Goliath, Wraith, and Kraken creatures as well as four additional hunters who will join the fray. The price? $24.99+ tax. That brings us to around $85.00 before tax.

What you may not know is that there’s also $136.00 worth of paid DLC available consisting of skins, assists, and weapons at the game’s launch. Ponder that. If you want everything, you’re looking to spend in the neighborhood of $221.00 BEFORE TAX. That’s like around $150.00 shy of buying a brand new Xbox One or any number of last gen systems.

Does that $136.00 include the $24.99 for the season pass? Does it even matter? Even if it did, that’s STILL $196.00 BEFORE TAX. One visit to the Xbox online marketplace tells the tale. There are four pages of DLC priced between $2.00 and $7.00 each.

The game’s developer, Turtle Rock Studios, has stated that new maps will be free to all so as to avoid segregating or divvying up players in this mainly multiplayer game. They’ve also stated that they intend to release new hunters and monsters as DLC – monsters for $15.00 a pop, hunters for $7.50 a pop. That’s in addition to the $220.00+ you’ll spend IF you want all of the existing stuff… you know… the added content to make it seem like you got your money’s worth from a complete $60.00 game.

Gamers are so confused and bewildered by this that they’ve gone so far as to create spreadsheets in an attempt to try to figure out what is worth what. This is just insane and, in the end, just plain wrong.

Evolve has just enough content on the disc to make it playable and little else. You want the full experience? The Goodfellas said it best – “FUCK YOU, PAY ME!

Usually at this point in an article we’ll list some links for you to buy a product from Amazon. However… this time? We just cannot in good conscience do so. Hey, Turtle Rock… You want the faith and love of the fans? FUCK YOU, PAY US!

Toward the end of January we told you about Legendary Comics’ upcoming 10-issue series The Harvester, and now that Issue #1 has launched as of today, we have a peek at a couple of interior pages to share.

Written by acclaimed horror writer Brandon Seifert (Witch Doctor, Hellraiser), The Harvester follows two rebellious investigators who hunt down the urban legend of a vengeful superhuman enforcer. The cover art was created by Eric Battle (X-Men, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman), the same artist who previously worked with Legendary last year as one of the artists for the Godzilla movie tie-in Godzilla: Awakening.

Synopsis:
Since the dawn of time, mischievous troublemakers have been warned of his wrath, scholars have searched for traces of his existence, and evildoers have been tormented by the unstoppable force that goes by a single name: The Harvester.

Some say he is nothing more than a folktale, an urban legend, a ghost story we tell our children. Others believe this nightmarish enforcer has been battling wickedness in our world for centuries, taking justice into his own savage hands. The time has come for the truth to be revealed.

Two rebellious investigators embark on a dangerous mission to uncover the mystery behind The Harvester. As they piece together his bloody path through history, a sinister force of darkness is unveiled that threatens every soul on Earth.

The first bit of casting news for the upcoming Evil Dead-based TV show, “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” has surfaced, as Ray Santiago (“Touch”) and Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) have been cast opposite Bruce Campbell in Starz’s 10-episode series follow-up to the cult film franchise.

From the Press Release:
Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) will play the role of Pablo Simon Bolivar and Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) will play Kelly Maxwell in the STARZ original series “Ash vs Evil Dead.” The series is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead and is set to film on location in New Zealand this spring and premiere on STARZ in late 2015.

Ash vs. Evil Dead

Pablo Simon Bolivar is an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick – a Sancho Panza to Ash’s Don Quixote. Pablo believes in Ash’s heroism even if Ash himself doesn’t.

Kelly Maxwell is a moody wild child trying to outrun her past. Reluctantly dragged into the fight against Evil with Ash and Pablo, Kelly finds a different kind of family with her fellow Deadite slayers.

Santiago has recurred on television shows including “Bad Judge,” “Raising Hope,” and “Dexter”. Additional film credits also include Suburban Gothic, Sex Ed, In Time, American Son and Girlfight among others.

DeLorenzo’s previous television credits include “Sullivan & Son,” “Workaholics,” “2 Broke Girls,” “Californication,” “Growing Up Fisher” and “Eagleheart” among others.

Santiago and DeLorenzo join previously announced cast member Bruce Campbell (Ashley J. Williams).

The STARZ Original series “Ash vs Evil Dead” will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.

Raimi will direct the first episode of “Ash vs Evil Dead” that he wrote with Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”) and Tom Spezialy (“Chuck,” “Reaper,” “Desperate Housewives”). Raimi will also serve as executive producer, along with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” Xena: Warrior Princess”) and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) and Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”) will serve as executive producer/showrunner. Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce and Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) will serve as producer.

THR reports that New Line has picked up the remake rights of the horror comedy from New Zealand that has earned praise from Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson.

Gerard Johnstone, who wrote and directed the movie, will produce the remake but will hand over the filmmaking reins to another. A search for a writer to adapt the movie is under way.

The story tells of a rebellious young woman who is forced to return to her country home thanks to a home detention program. Living with her small-town-minded mother and stepfather seems like a fate worse than death until she begins to suspect that something malevolent may be in the house as well.

First Look at Andrew Bryniarski in The Chair

Andrew Bryniarski made a pretty awesome Leatherface in 2003’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and 2006’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, but we haven’t seen much of him lately. That’s about to change as right now we have a behind-the-scenes production picture from the set of The Chair, in which Bryniarski portrays Richard Sullivan, a death row inmate who has been falsely imprisoned and is fighting against the prison’s psychopathic and sadistic Warden (played by Bill Oberst, Jr.).

In the film Sullivan’s fragile mental state escalates to horrific levels as tensions mount and he slowly begins to lose his grip on reality.

Looking for even more?  How about a behind-the-scenes look at Noah Hathaway as Alvarez taking aim?

Directed by Chad Ferrin, The Chair also stars Zach Galligan, Naomi Grossman, Derrick Damions, Kyle Hester, Joe “Animal” Laurinaitis, Susan Eisenberg, Kin Shriner, and Roddy Piper as the prison guard Murphy.

It is filming now through February 24th in Los Angeles, California.

Cinemax Gives Robert Kirkman’s Outcast a Series Order

0

Well, this seems like a no-brainer. Cinemax has picked up Robert Kirkman’s exorcism drama pilot “Outcast” with a 10-episode order.

Kirkman, creator and exec producer of “The Walking Dead,” penned “Outcast,” based on one of his comics, on spec for Fox International Channels, which developed the project internally. Cinemax then acquired the script and greenlit a pilot last July. Per Deadline, Kirkman serves as executive producer alongside Chris Black, David Alpert of Circle of Confusion, Sharon Tal Yguado of FIC, and Sue Naegle.

“Outcast,” based on Kirkman’s Skybound/Image comic title (the artist is Paul Azaceta), follows Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson (Philip Glenister), a preacher with personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle discovers could change his fate — and the fate of the world — forever. Gabriel Bateman co-stars. The pilot was directed by Adam Wingard.

“We are thrilled to be in business with Robert Kirkman, a visionary talent who has the unique ability to tap into today’s zeitgeist, making him a perfect fit for the newly expanded Cinemax roster,” said HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo.

Being Human’s Sam Witwer Up for The Crow?

You know, having been a big fan of the Syfy series “Being Human,” I can actually see this working. That’s right, kids! According to Blastr one name being brought up to be the star of the new version of The Crow is Sam Witwer.

According to the site: Crow creator James O’Barr is pushing hard for actor Sam Witwer to play lead Eric Draven. O’Barr said he has been in communication with Witwer for some time and thinks the actor has the look and ability to portray the protagonist from his comic.

O’Barr is heavily involved in the new film, and the recently departed Luke Evans was handpicked by him to play Draven as well. So he’s definitely holding some influence on the flick. Director Corin Hardy of course has the ultimate say so we shall see.

James Franco to Star in Hulu’s 11/22/63 Adaptation

Back in September of last year, we learned that Hulu had greenlit “11/22/63″ – a new Hulu Original from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, author Stephen King, executive producer/writer Bridget Carpenter, and Warner Bros. Television. Now we know who the star of the nine-hour miniseries is going to be, and it’s a very familiar face.

Per THR, Oscar nominee James Franco (127 Hours, “Freaks and Geeks”) will both produce and star.  Based on King’s bestseller, “11/22/63″ is a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping (Franco) travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, his falling in love, and the past itself… which doesn’t want to be changed.

jamesfranco

Carpenter (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”) will pen the script and exec produce the drama alongside King and Bad Robot’s Bryan Burk. Bad Robot’s Kathy Lingg will co-exec produce, and Athena Wickham will produce. The drama hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Abrams’ Bad Robot is under an overall deal. “11/22/63″ marks the first collaboration for Abrams with Hulu, which will be the Stateside home for the series. Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution will distribute the series globally.

A premiere date for “11/22/63″ has not yet been announced so stay tuned!

VIZ Productions Developing Japanese Short Story The Street of Fruiting Bodies as a Feature Film

VIZ Media, LLC, the largest distributor and licensor of manga and anime in North America, has announced that its Los Angeles-based film development division, VIZ Productions, is developing the haunting short story “The Street of Fruiting Bodies” by famed Japanese author Sayuri Ueda into a feature film. They have retained Batman screenwriter Sam Hamm to write the adaptation.

“The Street of Fruiting Bodies” depicts the sudden spread of a mysterious and lethal species of hallucinogenic mushroom. The infestation is deadly, but it also offers visions of deceased loved ones to the infected, hinting at the reality of an afterlife, or at least a new kind of existence that is beyond human comprehension. Ueda’s story appeared in the anthology Phantasm Japan, which collected works by several bestselling authors from both the United States and Japan and was published in English in 2014 by VIZ Media’s Haikasoru literary imprint. More information on the book is available at haikasoru.com.

Jason Hoffs, Head of Production at VIZ Productions, says the story is well suited for feature film adaptation. “Sayuri Ueda turns the ‘killer virus’ concept on its head with an agent that strikes at our emotions rather than our bodies. We hope to marry the pace of a riveting popcorn movie with a compelling meditation on life-after-death, love and memory, and God.”

Screenwriter Sam Hamm is best known for his script for the 1989 Tim Burton film Batman and also adapted short fiction for Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” series. He says of the new project, “Ueda creates a world in which the most profound human emotions – love, grief, longing, and hope – can lead to one’s salvation or one’s undoing, and the true horror is that it may be impossible to tell the difference. ‘The Street of Fruiting Bodies’ is not only disturbing, it is moving.”

More on Neill Blomkamp’s Alien; Sigourney Weaver Speaks Up

0
0

Following up on a story regarding talks heating up for Neill Blomkamp to direct an Alien film, the director and his Chappie star, Sigourney Weaver, have gotten a bit more vocal about the possible project.

As per Coming Soon:

Fox was blindsided by it, which wasn’t my intention,” Blomkamp explained of his concept art reveal. “I just wanted to share artwork with people that liked the franchise. I don’t know whether it’s going to happen or not. We’ll see. Fox didn’t know that I was developing [the artwork], so in that sense, it was completely unsanctioned and just basically for fun. To me, it wasn’t for fun. To me, that was what I wanted to do next, and I spent a lot of time doing it, and there was a lot of effort that went into. Like when I could take breaks between Chappie’s post-production winding down as VFX got under control.”

As for Weaver…

[Neill] kept sending me these brilliant designs and ideas and everything. We’ll see what happens. We just left it at such a creepy place, sort of stranded above Earth. I was quite happy to move on to other things, and I didn’t want to go to Earth. I didn’t want to manufacture a sequel, and I felt like we were starting to do that. If something happens from this, it would be very organic and very original, and because of that, it would make me want to do it. If it was someone as talented as Neill, I’d certainly listen.

Hey, Fox, are YOU listening?

Preacher Script Finished; Is Astonishingly Good?

0
0

It is astonishingly good, more so for being so different from the comic. But not in the way that it feels. It feels like ‘Preacher,’ and dammit, that’s all I actually want,” exclaimed Bleeding Cool after reading the completed script for AMC’s upcoming adaptation of Preacher from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Click on that aforementioned link if you want more details and spoilers regarding the proposed script. Us? We’d rather be surprised.

From the Previous Press Release:
AMC has ordered a pilot for a series based on the popular comic book franchise “Preacher.” The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for TV by Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”) and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (This Is The End, Superbad, Neighbors). Rogen & Goldberg will produce through their Point Grey banner, along with Neal Moritz’s Original Film. The pilot was written by Sam Catlin. Rogen & Goldberg are attached to direct.

“Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully. With ‘Preacher,’ it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic book series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and a whole lot of fans who already know Jesse Custer, Cassidy, and Tulip,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of original programming, production and digital content. “Add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, an incredible producing team in Neal Moritz, the Original Film team, and our good friends at Sony Pictures Television; and we have everything we need to be VERY excited to move forward on ‘Preacher.’”

“Preacher has been our favorite comic since it first came out,” Rogen & Goldberg said. “Garth Ennis is one of our idols, and it’s an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won’t make too many dick jokes and ruin it.”

“Thanks to AMC for completely losing their minds and letting us do this,” Catlin said. “I’m so excited to bring Garth Ennis’ bloody, amazing, and bloody amazing universe to TV.”

Garth Ennis said: “Steve Dillon and I are extremely pleased to know AMC has taken ‘Preacher’ to pilot. We have had an ongoing voice in the efforts of the writers whom Sony TV and Original Film entrusted with this project, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, and have been most gratified that they continue to include us and that they have tackled the project with the type of unwavering commitment and courage needed to present the material as Steve and I intended. This has been a long time coming, but that it continues apace, and with the chance to be delivered episodically, gives ‘Preacher’ an opportunity to be seen in its best possible medium, not previously possible. And many thanks indeed to Ken Levin and Neal Moritz for their never flagging commitment to ‘Preacher,’ and for never giving up well past the point when I myself grew skeptical — we have principally gotten to where we are today because of Neal and Ken.”

Based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s twisted ‘90s comic book series, “Preacher” is about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God.

The pilot will be produced in the summer of 2015 for series consideration in 2016.

Jason Lives is an edition of 250 and will run $45, while Cannibal Holocaust (also an edition of 250) will cost $50. You know the drill by now. Keep an eye on the official Mondo Twitter account for a random announcement on when you can try to secure them sometime tomorrow.

This truly killer artwork comes courtesy of Phantom City Creative and Jock, who are also releasing the Cannibal Holocaust LP sometime tomorrow as well via the Mondo website.
