NBC Announces Summer Premiere Dates for Hannibal and Aquarius

Finally… the news we’ve been waiting for has arrived!  If, like us, you’ve been on pins and needles to find out when “Hannibal” will be returning to the airwaves, we have the full details right here, right now along with info on the network’s new “event” series “Aquarius.”

“AQUARIUS” — Two-hour premere on Thursday, May 28, 9-11 p.m. (Episode 1.01 – “Everybody’s Been Burned”); regular slot begins Thursday, June 4, 9-10 p.m.
It’s 1967, and the era of free love, drug experimentation, and Vietnam is in full effect. When Emma (Emma Dumont), the teenage daughter of a respected lawyer, goes missing, LAPD Sgt. Sam Hodiak (David Duchovny) starts asking around. He soon discovers that the hippie kids he’s questioning don’t take kindly to cops, especially a cop with hair as short as his.

Needing the help of someone to trust, he partners with young undercover cop Brian Shafe (Grey Damon), a law-abiding officer who struggles with his own demons. He also begins to rely on Charmain Tully (Claire Holt), an ambitious rookie cop who’s anxious to prove herself in a male-dominated profession.

It’s not long before they stumble upon a small-time cult leader seeking out vulnerable women to join his cause. From there, they follow this man’s trail down a rabbit hole of drugs, sex, murder, and a cultural revolution. Little could they know, however, the guy they’re hunting will eventually become the killer we now recognize as Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony) — a lost soul who desperately wanted to get into the music scene of the ’60s until something snapped.

“Aquarius” will explore the cat-and-mouse game between Manson and the police in those turbulent years leading up to the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders.

For the latest news, like “Aquarius” on Facebook and follow “Aquarius” on Twitter.

“HANNIBAL” — Season 3 kicks off Thursday, June 4, 10-11 p.m. (Episode 3.01 – “Antipasto”)
The dark and haunting series “Hannibal” returns for a third season, revealing the fates of characters hanging in the balance and their continuing psychological cat-and-mouse games.

After the shocking events of the season finale, Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) is on the run in Europe — accompanied by his psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) — sporting a new identity but servicing the same insatiable appetite. As the lives of Will (Hugh Dancy), Jack (Laurence Fishburne) and Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) converge toward Hannibal again, their deadly dance turns in startling and unexpected ways, and nothing will ever be the same again.

For more info be sure to visit “Hannibal” on NBC.com, “like” “Hannibal” on Facebook, and follow “Hannibal” on Twitter.

Monsters in a Lockdown at Franklin High; Project Gets New Writers

Here at Dread Central we are bound and determined to make monster movies have their much needed resurgence, and it’s good to see the studios getting in on the act as well!

The Wrap is reporting that Project Almanac scribes Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan have been hired to rewrite the high school monster movie Lockdown at Franklin High for Sony Pictures, Platinum Dunes, and Benderspink.

Now known simply as Lockdown, the story follows a straight-edge teen girl and her rebellious outcast brother as they try to escape from their high school, which is under lockdown due to the threat of a ravenous monster that has been attacking students.

The original script was written on spec by Greg Bishop and Joe Ballarini and sold in a competitive situation to Sony back in March 2012. The duo were inspired to write the script by real high school lockdowns following tragic incidents.

New York Theater Hosting Bong Joon-ho Retrospective

0
0

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho has made quite a name for himself in the past decade, directing films like the monster flick The Host and 2013’s critically-acclaimed Snowpiercer. A career worth celebrating, to say the least, and one New York theater is doing just that.

Located in Pleasantville, New York, the Jacob Burns Film Center is hosting a Bong Joon-ho retrospective from March 19th through April 2nd, holding special screenings of four of his feature films. Coolest of all, Bong will be in attendance for every screening, making this a must-attend for all fans.

First up is Memories of Murder on March 19th, his second feature film. The search for a serial killer is the focus of this complex, riveting film. When the hard-nosed detective arrives from the big city to straighten out the investigation, the culture of corruption during the 1980s military dictatorship is as frustrating as the incomplete information the local cops provide.

On March 24th is The Host, one of the finest monster movies of the past decade. The talk of the Cannes Film Festival and an international hit, The Host centers on a giant monster that emerges from the river to crush, eat, and grab its victims—and the family that isn’t going to let their little girl go without a fight. It was the highest-grossing film in Korean history at the time.

The Hitchcockian Mother screens on March 30th, about a mother who is devoted to her hapless 27-year-old son. When he is accused of murder, her maternal instincts kick into overdrive, and she sets out to prove his innocence. Critics point out that the monster in this film—a mother whose love knows no bounds—is as terrifying and darkly funny as any of Bong’s other creations.

And finally, Snowpiercer wraps up the retrospective on April 2nd, notable for being Bong’s first English-language film. In it, a postapocalyptic ice age forces the last humans on earth aboard a supertrain zooming around the world in endless loops. Each car is different—in the back it’s a slum, but an aquarium, a nightclub, and a sushi bar are up front—and there’s no shifting around.

You can head over to the Jacob Burns Film Center’s website for more information, and you can also purchase tickets to individual screenings while you’re there. Each ticket purchase gets you access to a Q&A session with the director, so be sure to clear your calendar for this one!

Filmmaker Jaiden Frost Remakes Twilight Zone Episode… Entirely on Instagram!

A couple months back we told you about Jaiden Frost, who is taking a very unique approach to filmmaking. Utilizing social media in a revolutionary way, Frost makes short films specifically for Instagram, chopping them up and releasing them in short 15-second spurts.

Frost’s latest project was a remake of an episode from “The Twilight Zone,” entitled “The Hitch-Hiker.” The episode originally aired in 1960 and centers on a woman who continually encounters the same mysterious man on a cross-country drive. There’s a big twist towards the end, but we won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it.

Premiering on February 19th, Frost’s version of the episode spanned 16 different Instagram videos and just wrapped up earlier this week, so now that you can watch the complete project all at once, we wanted to bring it to your attention. Gotta love this sort of outside-the-box filmmaking.

Check out the series trailer below, and then head over to Jaiden Frost’s Instagram to see the entire short-form remake!

If there’s anything that instills a sense of nostalgia in 99.9% of horror fans, it’s the video store–namely, the oh so glorious cover art that turned such establishments into heavenly places of cinematic worship. The new book VHS Video Cover Art is a celebration of that nostalgia-inducing art, so listen up.

Curated by artist Thomas Hodge, and with a forward by Mondo’s Justin Ishmael, this collection contains over 240 full-scale, complete video sleeves in the genres of action, comedy, horror, kids, sci-fi, and thriller films. It’s a world of mustached and muscled men, buxom beauties, big explosions, phallic guns, and nightmare-inducing monsters.

Obscure gems to cult classics in all your favourite genres – from the sublime to the ridiculous,” Hodge told us. “Some are incredible works of art, some insane, some perfectly capture the tone of the films, some capture that tone even better than the films themselves, and some have the most tenuous link imaginable! However, all, as you will see, are amazing and inspiring works of art, which will captivate the imagination along with feelings of excitement and wonder.”

The hardcover VHS Video Cover Art is set for release on May 28th, and while you wait, you can browse a collection of sneak previews below. This book is truly like stepping back in time into your local video store, so if you have a fondness for that bygone era, it’s an absolute must!

Synopsis:
THE WALKING DECEASED is the Scary Movie of the zombie genre, ripping on the biggest and best of zombie pop-culture, arguably the most crazed genre in the world. The story follows a group of survivors from all walks of the apocalypse – an idiotic Sheriff with definite coma-induced brain damage, his hardass son, and a hobo with only a crossbow to stave off the walking dead, four squabbling friends forced to survive this zombieland together, and a lonely zombie who just needs love to fully regain his warm body – who leave their once-safe mall hideout in search of the rumored Safe Haven Ranch, a refuge untouched by the zombie virus that has ravaged humanity. But despite the comforting name, they discover that this sanctuary may not be as welcoming as advertised.

Tearing apart powerhouses like The Walking Dead, Zombieland, Warm Bodies, World War Z, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and even Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead, THE WALKING DECEASED rips the flesh off the spoof genre and infects it with a virus too hilarious not to spread.

Live-Action Akira Movie No Closer to Reality, Says Jaume Collet-Serra

0
0

It’s been a while since we’ve had anything to report about Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of Japanese animated film Akira, which Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, Run All Night) has been tapped to direct. And there’s a reason for that, unfortunately. Read on.

In an interview with Collider, Collet-Serra revealed that the project is essentially dead in the water at this present moment in time, as absolutely no progress has been made in the past year.

No, no. There’s nothing,” said the director, when asked if the film was currently in the works. “It’s a Warner Bros. question,” he continued, indicating that the fate of the adaptation is out of his hands.

After directing both Non-Stop and Run All Night, back to back, Collet-Serra says that the only thing in his immediate future is a big ole break.

I truly will not make a decision on a movie for a few months because I’ve done these two movies in three years without any time off so I cannot wait for this movie to come out and just fade away,” he said. “So my next movie’s not gonna be for a while, let’s put it this way.”

Last we heard, Dante Harper (the first Edge of Tomorrow scribe who recently did a draft on Vin Diesel vehicle The Last Witch Hunter) was working with Warner Bros on the script, though we have no way of knowing if he’s still on board this potentially sunken ship.
