Go One Step Beyond on DVD

Before we all entered “The Twilight Zone,” the boss of genre TV was “One Step Beyond,” which focused on re-enactments of actual paranormal incidents instead of fictitious stories. The show has been available on DVD before but never this complete.

From the Press Release:
One Step Beyond” explores the amazing world of the unknown through dramatic re-enactments of mysterious “real life events.” Seventy of the 96 original episodes will be available April 7 in a special, six-disc DVD collector’s set from Film Chest Media Group.

Produced a year before “The Twilight Zone,” “One Step Beyond” – which ran on ABC for three seasons (1959-1961) – sparked the growing interest in paranormal suspense in the late 1950s. Rather than creating fictional stories with mystical twists and turns like the more well known sci-fi series of the time, this program sought out “real stories” of supernatural events to be re-enacted.

From ghosts and monsters to mysterious disappearances, each eerie episode presents storylines that defy common understanding of reality. No solutions to these mysteries were ever found, leaving viewers bewildered … wondering if the paranormal truly exists.

Includes appearances by such iconic stars as Charles Bronson, Cloris Leachman, Robert Loggia, Ross Martin, Warren Beatty, Robert Blake, Suzanne Pleshette, and Joan Fontaine.

Hosted by John Newland (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, “Peyton Place,” “Dr. Kildare”), this set includes the most original episodes ever offered in a single package to date. BONUS: Episode guide with synopses.

“One Step Beyond” is presented in full screen with an aspect ratio of 4 x 3 and original sound.

Exclusive: Zach Lipovsky Talks Dead Rising: Watchtower

We recently had the opportunity to snag a few moments with the director who is leading the charge in the motion picture adaptation of the insanely popular Dead Rising video game series, Zach Lipovsky. Zach, who has been around the visual set since a very young age, is poised to grab the zombie genre firmly by its rotted flesh and offer a bridge between the franchise’s two most popular titles.

Read on for an entertaining look at a filmmaker that is more than ready to make a big splash in an even bigger pool of blood – enjoy!

Dread Central – Can you give us a little insight about how you got your start in the business?

Zach Lipovsky – My beginning was as an actor; my mom was a TV producer who needed free talent so she used me as a kid actor in her shows, and I grew up on set, while also being a computer nerd and making my own home movies and learning while on film sets. I used to make short films with my friends, and one of my short films won a big competition in Vancouver, which is where I’m from. That film I used to get into “On the Lot,” which was a big competition that Stephen Spielberg and Mark Burnett had come up with, kind of like an “American Idol” for filmmaking, and that was kind of my big spotlight in Hollywood, which helped me get agents and all that stuff, which actually happened at the worst possible time because after the show was the big writers’ strike and the recession, which basically stopped everybody from making movies for two years (laughs). I then had to start all over again, making smaller films, and I’ve been working my way back up ever since.

Dead Rising Zach Lipovsky

DC – Give us the lowdown on Dead Rising: Watchtower – what can fans of the franchise expect to see from this film?

ZL – I’m really excited about this film, probably as excited as I’ve ever been on a film that I’ve made, and it’s really been a work of love for everyone involved who’ve been fans of the franchise and games. People who’ve seen the film that have been big fans of the game have been like, “Wow, that was one of the most faithful adaptations I’ve ever seen; now I want to go and play the game,” and people who’ve never played before have liked it and wanted to start playing as well. I’m excited to bring that world to life, and the other really cool thing about it is it takes place within the canon of the story world between Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3.  It tells the story of what happened between those two games, which I think is really unique.

DC – So, were you a hardcore fan of these games, or were they something you just checked out in passing?

ZL – I actually hadn’t played the games before – I’ve always been a computer game-guy, and the funny thing is, when I was growing up, my mom never let me have a console (laughs). But when I got hired to do this, we were shooting in Vancouver where the game was made, so I got to stay with her when we were making the film, so I got to bring an Xbox along, plop it down in the middle of the living room and say, “Okay, there’s nothing you can say about this now because I’m being paid to play!” So I played games 1, 2, and 3 on a binge while she watched and was horrified (laughs), and that’s where I really came to love them.  So much of the game is in the movie, and anytime anything would come up that I thought was hilarious or scary, I’d write it down and put it in the film.

DC – Now, did you find it a challenge to try to create something that looks really good on a small budget, or had you hoped for one of these multi-million dollar productions?

ZL – That was probably our biggest challenge – we had a small budget, even though we were with Legendary Pictures. We still wanted it to feel huge, and I think we really hit a great balance where it’s a small film, but we put every ounce we had into it to make it look as big as possible, and even though it’s technically a web-series type budget, it looks really big and cool and brings to life as much as we could to the universe. People are going to be surprised at how big it feels, with how little money we had. I mean, we had hundreds of people that were zombies and walk-ons that wanted to be zombies, and it was just a great energy around making this film in my hometown.  And the people we hired – it was kind of a step up for them to do this kind of work, and they were bringing as much as they could, and we just got so much more than we’d hoped for – it was worthwhile.

DC – Last one for you… After the release of this film, what can we expect to see from you in the future?

ZL – One of the things I’m most excited about is I’m attached to a script that was written by Graeme Manson, the creator of “Orphan Black,” and it’s the best script I’ve ever read. I read it years and years ago, and for the longest time we couldn’t get together, but now that our careers have grown, it’s finally starting to pick up momentum, and I’m really hoping that’s the next thing that is ready to go. It’s an incredibly well-written, contained thriller that takes place in a lighthouse in the 1920’s – almost like The Shining – that type of psychological horror. It’s one of those insane page-turners where you just can’t believe how cool all the characters are, and the plot twists… it’s just really well-done. I’ve also written my own script for a contained thriller/time-travel movie that I’m excited to put out there.

Crackle’s Dead Rising: Watchtower, a feature film adaptation of the hit video game franchise, will be premiering on March 27th. Check it out, and keep that Zombrex handy!

The cast includes Jesse Metcalfe (“Desperate Housewives,” “Dallas”), Meghan Ory (“Once Upon a Time”), Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Sideways), Dennis Haysbert (Men, Women & Children), comic actor Rob Riggle (22 Jump Street, Let’s Be Cops), Harley Morenstein (“Epic Meal Time”), Keegan Connor Tracey (“Bates Motel,” “Once Upon A Time”), and Aleks Paunovic (This Means War).

Sony’s Crackle will give the 90-minute feature, directed by Leprechaun: Origins’ Zach Lipovsky, an exclusive digital release in the U.S. before the film receives a multi-platform release on SVOD, VOD, DVD, and TV.

The script was written by Tim Carter, who also produces alongside Tomas Harlan under their Contradiction Films banner (the same company that produced Mortal Kombat: Legacy). Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe) is the executive producer.

Synopsis:
As in the video game, Dead Rising: Watchtower is set during a zombie apocalypse. When a mandatory government vaccine fails, a group of survivors must evade infection while hunting down the root of the epidemic, which leads back to a government conspiracy.

Another Pushy Ghost Attacks Toddler in The Gasp Menagerie

You might remember our recent story from South America about a woman apparently knocked down by invisible hands, all caught on video.

It looks like that spook might have a cousin in Wales, as we have video from the Sunday Express showing a toddler falling backwards while standing still in a very similar way.

The little girl is seen playing peekaboo with her family, when suddenly she slams hard onto her backside out of nowhere. Her family is quoted as saying she’s very steady on her feet and that she yelled, “Down!” as she fell, which is what she does when their cat jumps on her or attacks her.

What do you think? A wobbly toddler or another pushy spirit?

There’s never been a better time to be a horror fan. Horror movies and horror entertainment are everywhere, man! It’s like being a kid in a candy store! More terrors are coming our way digitally and we have your details right here.

From the Press Release:
XLrator Media today announced it will launch a destination for XLrator Media’s large and growing library of top genre films and other enthusiast content on Hulu, starting with the debut of the “MACABRE” collection which will begin streaming content on March 15, 2015. The announcement was made today by XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.

“MACABRE” will be a destination for some of the top independent horror and genre films from around the globe, and will be the first of several “premium-content” destinations to be launched this year by XLrator Media in the fast-growing “over-the-top” (OTT) distribution space. The company is seeking to develop a myriad of bespoke “OTT carriage deals” with leading digital and legacy platforms. Future enthusiast destinations coming to Hulu and other platforms in 2015 include “TURBO” for action film fans and offerings for fans of multi-cultural films and documentaries.

“With some of the top entertainment brands such as HBO, Showtime, CBS, Nickelodeon, and others having recently made announcements that they are going over the top (OTT), this is a clear sign that mainstream consumers are now ready for this new way to receive and view content. With this validation of the OTT delivery space, we saw an opportunity to develop a network of “narrow-casted” content destinations for high-quality independent films that appeal to enthusiast audiences,” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.

“We are launching our company’s OTT initiative with the ‘MACABRE’ Collection on Hulu. It’s taken us four years to cultivate the MACABRE brand to the genre community. With so many horror and genre films out there, consumers value a highly curated label like MACABRE that represents the best of breed,” said Gordon.

Latest on New Ghostbusters Movie Universe; Chris Pratt in the Mix? Four Films?!

$

Yesterday came the surprising news that Sony is working on not just an all-female Ghostbusters reboot but also a male-centric one, with Channing Tatum being eyed to star in the latter. Today we’ve got a little clarification for you, along with an update on the new universe. So read on!

In speaking with some folks over at Sony for Badass Digest, Devin Faraci scored some very interesting nuggets of info regarding Sony’s future plans with the franchise. First up, this whole all-male thing seems to have been a misunderstanding, and Chris Pratt may be in the mix.

First of all, this new Ghostbusters movie isn’t all-male. It isn’t ‘guy-centric,'” wrote Faraci. “I spoke to three different people who were baffled as to where that came from. But it does have some guys at the center – the concept here is a movie that spins out of the chemistry between real-life friends Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt. This isn’t a case of ‘everybody wants Chris Pratt in their movie,’ this is a case of these two guys being pals and wanting to make this movie together.”

As for the movie itself: it’s complementary to the Paul Feig film. What’s more, the hope is that after Feig’s Ghostbusters is out and after Tatum’s Ghostsbusters is out the next film will see the two teams co-mingling, Avengers-style. This is planned out, and has been getting planned out for some time – it’s not a sudden change of heart at Sony. The idea is that this shared universe will allow Feig to do his thing, Reitman and the Russos and Drew Pearce to do their thing, and for them to cross over when they must.”

Related Story: Paul Feig Looks to The Walking Dead for Ghostbusters Inspiration?

In addition to those three upcoming films, it also seems that Sony is planning a prequel to the new franchise, which will take place before the events of all three. It will apparently have nothing to do with the original 1984 Ghostbusters characters, as none of these projects are supposed to.

Talking to my sources it’s become clear that ‘Ghostbusters’ is going to be the catch-all umbrella for a world of supernatural FX comedies,” noted Faraci. “That world will truly become clear in the team-up film. If the plan for almost yearly Ghostbusters movies holds, these four – the all-female, the Channing/Pratt, the crossover and the prequel – definitely provide a base to rotate annually between tones and concepts.”

So there you have it. Four films, all tied together within one Marvel-inspired universe. We sure hope you aint afraid of no ghosts!

Eli Roth Updates on The Green Inferno and Cabin Fever Remake

$

Eli Roth is spinning a handful of plates at the moment with both directorial efforts and production ventures soon headed our way. This week he’s provided big ole updates on a couple of those projects so read on for the latest in the world of Eli!

In an interview with IGN, Roth first opened up about cannibal flick The Green Inferno, revealing that it’s pretty damn close to release, though legal issues are still being ironed out.

Trust me when I say there are no less than four lawyers from different companies on conference calls and email chains every single day trying to work this out,” said Roth. “I was hoping to have it resolved today or by Monday so we could do something to hopefully have it out this summer. That’s what everyone’s working towards. To have it out August or September. But I was 90 days out from a release, there was a trailer and posters in theaters, and it got pulled. So please don’t hold me to anything, but trust me when I say everybody is all over it working it out.”

We’re at the one-yard line, but I’ve also been there before so I don’t want to say anything, but I just thank everyone for their patience and understanding,” he continued. “And it really helps when people tweet ‘Please release it, please release it’ – it keeps the fire burning, but everyone is working to resolve it.”

Roth also spoke about the upcoming Cabin Fever remake in the same interview, clearing up the rumors that it was going to be a shot-for-shot affair.

They came to me exactly a year ago and said, ‘We want to remake Cabin Fever using your original script,’” he noted. “You’ve got to realize that from an egotistical point of view, I wrote Cabin Fever when I was 22 years old. Right out of university. And for six years everyone told me, ‘This is an un-makeable piece of shit.’ So the fact that the same script would get made twice and that 20 years later, 20 years after I originally wrote it, it got sent around Hollywood and people were reading the same dialogue. I looked at it as like staging a play – as an experiment I just wanted to see how it would turn out. So I came on as one of the executive producers.”

I saw the cut and thought that what Travis [Zariwny] did was so smart – he kept the original script, but he changed the deaths so all the kills are different. You don’t know how they’re going to come. I was watching it and he didn’t tell me that he did that and I was so happy he did – because nobody wants to see a re-do that’s the same thing that they already know. So he leads you in one direction with the audience thinking that they know what’s coming, then puts a fantastic spin on it. And it looks awesome – it’s a really fun movie. I’m happily surprised at how it’s turned out.”

This unique Cabin Fever remake is finished and presumably ready for release, though a date hasn’t been set. So for now, as with The Green Inferno, we sit back and wait.

We told you back in January that “The Walking Dead’s” Lauren Cohan (Maggie) signed on for a slight reprieve from the zombie apocalypse in the film The Boy, and now word has come that production has begun.

Cohan stars in the horror thriller from Lakeshore Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment. William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) is directing the project, which is aiming for a January 22, 2016, release.

The script, written by Stacey Menear, centers on a nanny (Cohan) who is tasked with overseeing a lifelike doll by a bizarre couple who treat it as a real child. The couple use the doll as way to cope with the death of their young son, but the nanny becomes increasingly convinced that it is alive.

Producing are Lakeshore’s Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg, Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Adam Stone, along with Jim Wedaa.

Upcoming Film Rings a Prequel to The Ring Remake?

Back in January we learned that F. Javier Gutierrez was working on a reboot of The Ring, though recent clarification suggests that perhaps “reboot” isn’t quite the proper term for this one. Is Rings actually more of a prequel? Read on for the latest!

Our good pals over at Bloody Disgusting just scored an interesting little morsel of exclusive news about the project, titled Rings, revealing that the 2002 remake’s continuity is most definitely not being thrown out the window in favor of an entirely new tale.

Our sources tell us that the new The Ring is actually a prequel and takes place before the 2002 remake that starred Naomi Watts as a woman uncovering the mystery behind a haunted VHS tape,” writes BD’s Brad Miska. “Rings will take place years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.”

Rings will hit theaters on November 13, 2015.

Gutierrez directed from a script written by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka, and Jacon Aaron Estes. Italian actress Matilda Lutz stars.

Based on a Japanese cult success, the first U.S. film went on to gross $249 million at the worldwide box office. That was enough to justify a sequel, which didn’t match the first one’s B.O. power but still grossed $160 million worldwide despite sucking CG deer dick.

Remember that bat-shit-crazy sounding flick Tokyo Tribe we told you about a while back? Well, strap in, kids, because we have some good news for you! It now has domestic distro!

From the Press Release:
XLrator Media (Jimi: All Is by My Side, The Machine) has acquired North American distribution rights to the street-gang/martial arts action/hip-hop musical epic TOYKO TRIBE, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). XLrator Media will release the film in fall 2015 on its “TURBO” action label.

TOKYO TRIBE was written and directed by Sion Sono, whose previous film Why Don’t You Play in Hell? won TIFF’s People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award. TOKYO TRIBE stars Ryohei Suzuki and Young Dais and is based on the manga by Santa Inoue. It was produced by Yoshinori Chiba, Kinya Oguchi, and Nobuhiro Iizuka.

“Audiences have never seen anything like TOKYO TRIBE and will be blown away by its originality, energy, and mind-blowing action and musical sequences that pay homage to everything from Quentin Tarantino to Scarface to West Side Story,” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.

In a futuristic, alternate Tokyo made up of ghetto slums and nightclub playgrounds, territorial street gangs rule the city. The opposing factions – each with their own distinctive style — control different neighborhoods, and crossing territorial lines leads to riots and rumbles. When a megalomaniacal gang leader tries to invade the other gangs’ turf, the city explodes into an all-out war.

The deal was negotiated by XLrator Media’s Barry Gordon with XYZ Films’ Nate Bolotin for Nikkatsu Corporation.
