Glenn Close and More Meet She Who Brings Gifts

0
0

Another zombie flick from the UK is getting ready to rise as Deadline is reporting that Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, and Glenn Close have boarded She Who Brings Gifts, a thriller about a seemingly normal and very intelligent little girl who lives in an underground army bunker with other children her age.

The catch? They’re all experimental cases being examined by scientists to find a cure for a fungal spore that has infected the planet.

The script was adapted by MR Carey from his own dystopian novel The Girl with All the Gifts.

Colm McCarthy (“Peaky Blinders,” “Sherlock,” “Ripper Street”) will make his feature directing debut with shooting to start in May.

More as it comes!

The Walking Dead spoof film The Walking Deceased (review) was just granted an April 21st DVD release date via ARC Entertainment! You’re so excited, right!?!

Directed by Scott Dow and written by Tim Ogletree, the film stars Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie, Ghost World), Joey Oglesby (Fruitvale Station, NBC’s “Friday Night Lights”), and Tim Ogletree (Supernatural Activity).

It was produced by Jonathan M. Black, Francis Casanova, Philip Marlatt, Derek Lee Nixon, Tim Ogletree, Dave Sheridan, Todd Slater, and Kurt Wehner and executive produced by Tim Fisher and Ken Tayloe.

Synopsis:
THE WALKING DECEASED is the Scary Movie of the zombie genre, ripping on the biggest and best of zombie pop-culture, arguably the most crazed genre in the world. The story follows a group of survivors from all walks of the apocalypse – an idiotic Sheriff with definite coma-induced brain damage, his hardass son, and a hobo with only a crossbow to stave off the walking dead, four squabbling friends forced to survive this zombieland together, and a lonely zombie who just needs love to fully regain his warm body – who leave their once-safe mall hideout in search of the rumored Safe Haven Ranch, a refuge untouched by the zombie virus that has ravaged humanity. But despite the comforting name, they discover that this sanctuary may not be as welcoming as advertised.

Tearing apart powerhouses like The Walking Dead, Zombieland, Warm Bodies, World War Z, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and even Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead, THE WALKING DECEASED rips the flesh off the spoof genre and infects it with a virus too hilarious not to spread.

I Spit on Your Grave: Vengeance Is Mine Taken by Anchor Bay

Never in a million years did I ever think that the remake of I Spit on Your Grave would launch a franchise, but alas, it has… stranger things have happened, right? Who’s ready for the next entry, I Spit on Your Grave: Vengeance Is Mine? Hey, at least Sarah Butler is back!

From the Press Release:
Anchor Bay Entertainment announced today the acquisition of I Spit on Your Grave: Vengeance Is Mine, the third chapter in CineTel Films’ successful horror franchise. Anchor Bay has rights to all formats including theatrical, digital, home entertainment, and TV for North America and other English-speaking territories (UK, Australia, New Zealand). The film is being produced by Lisa Hansen and Paul Hertzberg of CineTel Films and executive produced by Meir Zarchi, director of the original 1978 cult classic. R.D. Braunstein is directing the film, and Sarah Butler reprises her role from 2010’s I Spit on Your Grave. Anchor Bay Entertainment President Bill Clark made today’s announcement. This latest installment is a continuation of the 2010 storyline and is currently in post-production, expected to be released later this year.

“We had a great experience working with Lisa and Paul at CineTel on the first two installments of I Spit on Your Grave and look forward to partnering with them again to grow the franchise,” said Kevin Kasha, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Acquisitions at Starz. “We know they will deliver another visceral chapter in the series that will thrill fans.”

“Anchor Bay has deep roots in the horror genre and has proven to be an incredible partner for us, as evidenced by the success of the first two films,” noted CineTel Films producer Lisa Hansen. “The fan base for horror films continues to be incredibly strong, and Anchor Bay shares our commitment to meet the insatiable demand for truly horrific, heart-pounding entertainment.”

Anchor Bay Entertainment released I Spit on Your Grave in 2010 and I Spit on Your Grave 2 in 2013 to critical acclaim. Based on Meir Zarchi’s 1978 version, the franchise has gained the respect of both mainstream and genre critics. The New York Times called the first film “extremely efficient grindhouse,” while New York Magazine praised, “Each killing is as protracted, humiliating, ingenious, gory and downright poetic as any I’ve seen, and I’ve seen it all.”

While we’re a bit disappointed in this season of “Supernatural” since it seems to be rehashing a lot of ground we’ve covered already, we are excited to see what transpires in the storyline involving Crowley and his mama, which looks to be coming to a head this week in Episode 10.6, “Paint it Black.” Check out this sneak peek, and don’t forget that the show’s on Wednesday nights now!

“Supernatural” Episode 10.16 – “Paint it Black” (airs 3/25/15)
ROWENA MAKES PLANS TO RECLAIM HER MAGIC Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a string of suicides committed by people with little in common other than the identical, grisly method of death – slow, self-administered disembowlment. All of the victims were members of a Catholic church and had recently given confession, leading the brothers to suspect the priest (guest star Stephen Daniel Curtis) is somehow involved. \

Meanwhile, when Crowley (Mark Sheppard) captures Olivette (guest star Teryl Rothery), the leader of the Grand Coven, Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) pleads her case to be allowed to practice magic freely again. John Showalter directed this episode written by Brad Buckner amd Eugenie Ross-Leming .

SHARK ALARM! Sony Goes In the Deep

Alarm! Shark alarm! The black flag! Shark alarm! The swimming menaces known as sharks are once again ready to swim through some crimson seas as Deadline is reporting that Louis Leterrier is in talks to helm In the Deep, the Black List script by Anthony Jaswinski about a lone surfer attacked by a shark and stranded on a reef who must find a way back to shore before succumbing to her injuries.

This is the script that sparked a bidding frenzy last September. It will be produced by Weimaraner Republic Pictures partners Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem.

Tonally, the spec is described as a cross between 127 Hours meets Jaws with a touch of Gravity thrown in for good measure. A young woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark. It’s an emotional piece for a young twentysomething star.

Teenage Exorcists Speed Toward the Realm

0

Demons meet teens. Teens meet demons. Ready, set, go make a movie! That’s right, kids! It’s oily skin vs. omen ilk in the upcoming flick Realm based on the short film of the same name.

Deadline is reporting that the web release of the short has demonstrated franchise potential for an ass-kicking teenage exorcist. The Rebecca Sonnenshine spec script Realm just sold to Relativity in a mid-six-figure deal with Scott Speer attached to direct.

In the short, a young woman (played below by Adelaide Kane) possesses the power to enter the soul of the possessed to wage physical battle against their inner demons. The result is a potential franchise in the vein of Resident Evil or Underworld with a heroine reminiscent of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (she’s great at killing demons, less so at handling her own demons in the real world).

The idea came from John Swetnam (who scripted the short) and Speer (who directed it), and they enlisted Sonnenshine to pen the script for the feature (she is a supervising producer on “The Vampire Diaries” and knows the teen existential crisis-meets-the supernatural terrain). Swetnam, known for Into The Storm and Step Up 5, will produce through his Mad Horse Films banner.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – Episode 4 (Video Game)

Resident Evil Revelations 2Developed and published by Capcom

Rated M for Mature

Available on PS4, XB1 (reviewed), PC, PSVita, PS3, Xbox360

And here we are, at the final episode of this unnecessarily drawn out road known as Revelations 2. I would be lying to say that I didn’t start looking forward to the next episode halfway through the second, but the installments have drawn some ire from me for being poor self contained experiences. Altogether, the package is amazing, but this is not a review of the package. That will come a bit later, when I have had more time to delve into the plethora of secrets and features that makes the game stand out in the DLC laden markets of today. This is a review of just the content in episode 4, so if you are buying them one at a time and want to know how this stacks up, then keep on reading, but if you want to know whether to buy the whole thing, wait for my review in a couple of days.

When we left off, the two different duos were in very different spots. Claire and Moira had just killed their mutant boss and where on their way up to the final confrontation with Wesker, while Barry and Natalia had just gotten separated on their way to the mine where the mutant future Wesker resided. Barry had a long way to go, so naturally I expected the Claire/Moira team to either have a shorter episode or be complicated in some way. With how robust episode 3 was, I figured this would be long as well. I was half right, as the Barry section turned out to be a multi-level and puzzle extravaganza of content, while the Claire/Moira section was 15 minutes long. Really, they walk out of the elevator, go up some stairs, sit through a monologue, and run out. Considering the big action scene has a timer somewhere around 7 minutes, I’m really not exaggerating how short it was. It wasn’t bad, and it set up well the future conflict, but it was shockingly sparse.

Barry “The Arsenal” Burton, on the other hand, treks through a dam, puzzles through a crumbling crane, speed runs his way though a poison gas mine, objectives his way down a mineshaft, keys his way through a mansion, and beats the final boss to death with his massive, throbbing, explosive python. The dam has two pathways, and which you take is up to whether or not you pulled a lever in Claire/Moira’s section. This split plays really well into the replayability that the game is going for, and I’m glad to see that they kept the theme going strong until the end.

Speaking of replayability, this episode brings to completion the main campaign, and with it gives access to all the unlockable weapons. As it stands just having completed the main campaign, I have two unlockable guns, but I can see at least 4 more. Unlock conditions range from completing the game in under 3 hours to completing all of the special modes, which though standard for a Resident Evil title is well implemented and robust enough to inspire more playthroughs. More on that in my full game review.

As for the plot, I was actually very surprised to find that the game did not go exactly where I thought it would. It got close, but it twisted the formula enough that I at least wasn’t bored. There’s something endearing about the characters, especially the Burtons. Moira “Jump on a Dildo Boss” Burton is younger and more energetic, with cheesy lines you’d expect from a millennial. Barry “The New Master of Unlocking” Burton is an old man, and his one liners usually revolve around the opponent’s ass and how kicked it is about to be. Claire is kind of blank, and Natalia is a little girl, but this isn’t their story. It’s a father/daughter story, and it is done with a perfect amount of cheese for a game that ends with a helicopter battle against a mutant “she-Wesker.”

It was the perfect endpoint to an incredibly satisfying experience. Don’t be put off by how short the first part is, because the concluding mission is so robust enough to be the whole episode. It was a great conclusion to the story, explaining what was going on in a reasonable and satisfying manner, which is far above and beyond the call of duty for a Resident Evil title. Really, they could have just said they brought people to the island to assist in the rise of the evil gnome empire and I would have just nodded and went with it, but they come up with a pretty reasonable explanation of what is going on. Remember, this is a series whose first game’s plot involved a scientist who was also a S.T.A.R.S. member engineering getting his team killed and releasing a bio-weapon to test his ultimate creation while himself being killed by it, and whose best installment told the tale of an insane Spanish cult leader who used parasitic tentacle beasts to subdue a rural village for the purpose of kidnapping the U.S. President’s daughter to infect her and take over the world. This is a series who thought it could combat allegations of racism by creating a black side character whose special weapon is a bow and who has an unlockable “tribal” costume with a leopard bikini and a necklace made of bones. The fact that they went with believable characters and a plot that actually kind of works is fucking staggering.

The episode isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty darn close. If you have stuck around episode by episode, waiting to see if this was worth it, the answer is “well you have already bought this, why are you reading my review.” This episode isn’t so great that it would make a lackluster package worth it, but luckily it fits in so well with the rest of the game that it ties together an excellent $25 dollar package. If it were $10 an episode, it would be worth it. Considering how short most $60 titles are nowadays, I’d even venture to say this might be worth $15 an episode. If you aren’t convinced, go ahead and read my full game review, but just as far as to answer if the 4th episode is worth the $7 asking price, the answer is a definitive yes.

The X-Files Officially BACK as 6-Episode Event Series!

Good news for you fans of “The X-Files” who were hoping that something would come of this past weekend’s news that a limited return for the show was close to being greenlit. We have the full official details right here, and fans of the show are certain to be doing the happy dance in 5… 4… 3… 2… 1!

From the Press Release:
Thirteen years after the original series run, Fox has ordered the next mind-bending chapter of “THE X-FILES,” a thrilling, six-episode event series which will be helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.

The X-Files

The announcement was made today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, and Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of “THE X-FILES.” Production on “THE X-FILES” event series is set to begin in summer 2015. Further details remain under wraps and will be announced at a later date.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of ‘THE X-FILES’ – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,” remarked Newman and Walden. “’THE X-FILES’ was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as ‘THE X-FILES’, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

“THE X-FILES” originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.

Produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions, “THE X-FILES” is created and executive-produced by Chris Carter.

Preacher Casts Cassidy – Joseph Gilgun

If you’re at all a fan of the Preacher comic series, chances are you’re extremely fond of the vampire Cassidy. He, in short, just rules. Today some casting news has come as Deadline is reporting that British actor Joseph Gilgun (“Misfits,” “This Is England”) has joined the drama pilot based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s cult 1990s comic.

The project, from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Sony TV, and AMC Studios, is about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Gilgun), the three embark on a journey to literally find God.

Jesse’s sidekick Cassidy is described as the most wild-ass, bestest “bro” you’d ever want to meet. He may be 100 years dead, but no one’s more boisterously alive than Proinsias Cassidy. An incorrigible mischief-maker, Cassidy’s up for anything — joyriding, bungee-jumping, bank robbing, peyote dropping. He’s also a relentless conversationalist with opinions on everything from religion to politics to pop culture to theories on why people are better able to tolerate the odor of their own flatulence.

In addition to Negga, Gilgun joins Ian Colletti, who was cast as Eugene Root, aka Arseface. Dominic Cooper has been in conversations for the lead, Jesse.
