Kenneth Choi Meets Stephanie

Some quick late-day casting news has arrived for Universal’s horror-thriller Stephanie as THR is reporting that “Sons of Anarchy” star Kenneth Choi has signed up for active duty.

He will join the previously announced Frank Grillo, Shree Crooks, and Anna Torv for the latest film from director Akiva Goldsman. Universal Pictures acquired Stephanie from Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse Productions and Matt Kaplan’s Chapter One.

First announced last summer, the film was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, whose script was voted to the 2012 Blood List.

Abandoned by her parents in their remote home, Stephanie (Crooks) survives on peanut butter and conversations with her toy turtle, while a dark supernatural force looms in the background. When her mother and father return to claim her, the malevolent power spins out of control with Stephanie at the center.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night on Blu-ray and DVD

One of the best reviewed films of the year, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (review) is finally coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Kino Lorber, and we have a peek at the goodies right here for you. Look for it in stores and online April 21st.

Strange things are afoot in Bad City. The Iranian ghost town, home to prostitutes, junkies, pimps, and other sordid souls, is a place that reeks of death and hopelessness, where a lonely vampire is stalking the towns most unsavory inhabitants. But when boy meets girl, an unusual love story begins to blossom… blood red.

The first Iranian Vampire western, Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. Amped by a mix of Iranian rock, techno, and Morricone-inspired riffs, its airy, anamorphic, black-and-white aesthetic and artfully drawn-out scenes combine the simmering tension of Sergio Leone with the surrealism of David Lynch.

Special Features:

  • Behind-the-Scenes Footage
  • Collectible Graphic Novels with Essay by Eric Kohn
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Q&A Hosted by Roger Corman at the Hammer Museum, part of MoMA’s Contenders Series
  • Stills Gallery

The Vampire Diaries Shocker – Nina Dobrev Leaving at the End of Season 6

Well, the rumors of a shake-up on set have been rampant since “The Vampire Diaries” co-stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder stopped dating in “real life,” and now it looks like at least one of them is true.  As she told her fans just short while ago, Dobrev is indeed leaving the show to pursue other opportunities.

In her own words on Instagram:

I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.

There’s more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you’ll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘that Twilight TV show.’ ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.

Love, Nina

ninadobrev&julieplec

Nina’s statement was followed up by exec producer Julie Plec’s, who told Deadline:

Saying goodbye to Nina is both bittersweet and beautiful. After six-plus years together, the entire cast and crew of “The Vampire Diaries” has reached a level of closeness that I don’t think any of us ever expected. Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold. We will miss Nina and the four hundred characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble.

She also added with regard to Michael Trevino (Tyler), who was recently cast in a pilot:

Michael has been a beloved member of the “Vampire Diaries” family since day one. Even though he’s also going to be out in the world exploring new opportunities, we look forward to finding creative ways to make sure he and his character, Tyler Lockwood, always remain a part of the show.

“The Vampire Diaries” is currently on a brief hiatus and will return on April 16th.

“The Vampire Diaries” Episode 6.18 – “I Could Never Love Like That” (4/16/15)
KILLER KARAOKE – With their humanity turned off, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) begin wreaking havoc at Whitmore, leaving Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to come up with a risky plan involving Lily (guest star Annie Wersching). After rushing to help Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) treat victims of Stefan and Caroline’s latest killing spree, Elena (Nina Dobrev) discovers Jo is pregnant, prompting her to reevaluate her own life as a vampire.

Meanwhile, when Sarah (guest star Tristan Mays) boldly turns the tables on an unsuspecting Enzo (Michael Malarkey), he is forced to open up about his tragic past. Lastly, at Scull Bar, a twisted round of karaoke leaves Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Matt (Zach Roerig) in a dangerous situation. Leslie Libman directed the episode with story by Matthew D’Ambrosio and teleplay by Chad Fivash and James Stoteraux.

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 3.05 – The Deal; First Details on Episode 3.06 – Norma Louise

$
0
0

Previously, on “Bates Motel”:  Norma attempted to unlock the secrets of the thumb drive Annika passed on before, well, Annika passed on – even involving Dylan to assist; a group of shadowy thugs descended upon the Bates Motel in search of the device, going so far as to ransack the office and threaten Dylan, who eventually hid the drive at his farm; Dylan also had a heart-to-heart with Caleb about the event that tore him and his sister apart; and, in the previous episode’s final scene, Norman discovered that Caleb was hiding out at Dylan’s farm and promised to tell Norma, threatening to destroy the relationship Dylan has tried so hard to build with her.

Tonight’s Episode 3.05 (“The Deal”) begins with Dylan avoiding his inevitable confrontation with Norma, even as she’s run off the road by one of the men who’d threatened her son the previous evening. Her attacker points out that she has something that belongs to one Bob Paris, who runs the Arcanum Club – and that Norma should meet with him soon.

Dylan eventually returns home, only for Norman to tell him that he’d already spoken with Norma and had spilled the beans about Caleb. Not long after, Dylan is contacted by the hospital to inform him of Norma’s accident. Upon his arrival, he apologizes to his mother – only to realize she has no idea about Caleb.

Romero continues his investigation into the pair of recent murders that have plagued his town and eventually takes a meeting with Paris, who readily admits that he’s missing the all-important thumb drive and suggests that it would be best for Romero to retrieve it from Norma for him.

Dylan confronts Norman about the revelation (or lack thereof) concerning Caleb, pointing out that Norma has no idea about it. Norman insists he told her, but Dylan states that it doesn’t matter as he plans on telling Norma himself anyway. Norman eventually speaks with his mother, gently prodding to see if she remembers him telling her anything important earlier that morning – only to discover that he may have had another blackout and had hallucinated the entire conversation.

Dylan’s housemate and fellow grower Gunner discovers the hidden drive and, in his boredom, cracks the password and opens the files within – revealing a financial ledger that appears to detail the illegal revenue from the drug trade that could take down several of the town’s more prominent and wealthy members.  Dylan tells Norma, who races to Romero and admits that she has the device. She points out that she wants to meet with Bob Paris and attempt to trade the drive – but not without getting something in return for her trouble. There’s some great acting from Farmiga in this scene, as she breaks down while discussing all this town has done to her and why she deserves something for that.

Romero, though wary of her plan, accompanies her to the meeting with Paris, where Norma demands the man’s help in rerouting the bypass to better accommodate her business in exchange for her silence regarding the drive’s contents (also, she wants a billboard… and a pool… with a jacuzzi). Paris agrees to everything, delighting Norma even as a still-concerned Romero watches on.

All’s well for Norma by episode’s end, until her sons sit her down to reveal the truth about Caleb and his whereabouts. The revelation that Dylan had been harboring her brother (and the fact that Norman now seems to be supporting his big brother’s decision) drives Norma a bit mad, sending her into a rage that sees her packing up in a hurry and leaving her boys – and possibly her entire life – in her rearview mirror.

It’s another solid episode this week, showcasing some great acting while furthering the plot in interesting ways. At this season’s midpoint things appear to be reaching the boiling point with every character, which will surely play out in fascinating ways. It was nice to see Dylan take a bit of the spotlight this week as well, as the interesting character is occasionally underused (or used regrettably, as with last season’s drug trade subplot). Here’s looking forward to the next installment, Episode 3.06, “Norma Louise.” Check out the synopsis below.

“Bates Motel” Episode 3.06 – “Norma Louise” (airs 4/13/15)
Norma considers a life outside of White Pine Bay, leaving Norman in a vulnerable position. As Dylan and Emma bond over helping their friend through a rough night, Caleb makes a difficult decision, and Romero is confronted by a new threat.

The Boy Will Come in 2016

First off if you think that the innocently written headline is at all dirty, then you are my kind of people and I love you all! Secondly, Deadline is reporting that the new film featuring “The Walking Dead’s” Lauren Cohan entitled The Boy has gotten itself a release date. Look for The Boy in theatres on January 22, 2016 via STX Entertainment and on home video thereafter via Universal.

Cohan stars in the horror thriller from Lakeshore Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment. William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) is directing the project, which is aiming for a January 22, 2016, release. Jim Norton (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Diana Hardcastle (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Ben Robson (“Vikings”), Rupert Evans (Hellboy) and James Russell (“Blue Bloods”) also star.

The script, written by Stacey Menear, centers on a nanny (Cohan) who is tasked with overseeing a lifelike doll by a bizarre couple who treat it as a real child. The couple use the doll as way to cope with the death of their young son, but the nanny becomes increasingly convinced that it is alive.

Producing are Lakeshore’s Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg, Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Adam Stone, along with Jim Wedaa.

Synopsis:
Greta (Cohan), a young American woman looking to escape a troubled past, takes a job in a small England village as a nanny for a wealthy couple’s 8-year-old son while they take a long vacation. She arrives at the remote manor to discover that things are not quite right. The surprisingly elderly Mr. & Mrs. Heelshire have a list of strict rules for her to follow in caring for their son Brahms, and they mysteriously warn Greta that not following them precisely could result in something terrible. But, the most disturbing realization of all is that Brahms is not an actual 8-year-old boy….he’s a life-sized porcelain doll, whom the doting parents care for and deeply love, just like a real boy.

“If you love him,” Greta is sternly instructed, “he will love you back.”

Isolated and alone, Greta notices that every time she breaks a rule, something strange happens in the house, and the doll reappears in different places and positions than where she put him. Compelled to uncover the mystery behind Brahms, Greta enlists the help of the local grocery delivery man, the only human being she sees for weeks, who shares horrifying details about the Heelshire family’s disturbing past, leading Greta to realize that she wasn’t just hired – she was chosen.

Attention Animal Lovers – Tom Towles’ Cats Need a Home

Sometimes when a loved one passes on, there are other loved ones whom no one thinks about… their pets. Though we’re still aching for the loss of beloved character actor Tom Towles, some recent news has come across that has our hearts breaking even further. Please, if you have a home and you have a heart, continue on for details.

From the TNT Management Facebook page:
As most of you know, on April 2, 2015 our dear friend Tom Towles passed away leaving behind his family, friends, thousands of fans and two short haired tabby cats; 9 year old Jack and 4 year old Lenny. Tom’s family is unable to take the cats due to severe allergies and are asking for help in re-homing them. They would prefer that the boys stay together as they are a bonded pair. At this time, the cats are still in Florida and can be adopted locally or out of state if transport is arranged for them. Everyone involved would like to see them in a permanent home rather than having to go to a shelter. Anyone interested in adopting them can email tdupal@tnttm.com for an application. We will be going through them personally to make sure they go to a great home. Please help us help these babies who are most assuredly scared and confused that their human is no longer with them.

Another incredible character actor has passed on, but wow, did he have one hell of a career. Best known to fans as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on the beloved TV series “The Dukes of Hazzard,” James Best has passed on at age 88.

CNN reports that according to Steve Latshaw, a longtime friend and Hollywood colleague, Best died in hospice in Hickory, North Carolina, of complications from pneumonia.

While Rosco definitely gets all of the love, Best also appeared in numerous horror films such as The Killer Shrews and its sequel, The Brain Machine; The Savage Bees; Shock Corridor; and even I Was a Teenage Werewolf. He also made numerous TV appearances on “The Twilight Zone” and “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.”

We here at Dread Central would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Best’s many friends, family members, and constituents. Happy trails, good sir. You were one of the best!

Eaten Alive Coming to Blu-ray Via Arrow US!

That’s right, kids! Buck is ready to fuck in glorious 1080p as the American branch of Arrow Films has just announced that the Tobe Hooper clasSICK is coming to Blu-ray! Look for it in stores and online July 28th.

From the Press Release:
Nearly a decade before he donned Freddy Krueger’s famous red and green sweater, horror icon Robert Englund delivered a supremely sleazy performance in Eaten Alive – another essay in taut Southern terror from Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Deep in the Louisiana bayou sits the ramshackle Starlight Hotel, destination of choice for those who like to check in but not check out! Presided over by the bumbling, mumbling Judd (and his pet croc which he keeps in a large pond out front), the patron of this particular establishment may seem like a good-natured ol’ Southern gent – but he has a mean temper on him, and a mighty large scythe to boot…

Oozing atmosphere from its every pore (the entire film was shot on a sound-stage at the famous Raleigh Studios, which lends it a queasy, claustrophobic feel), Eaten Alive matches The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for sheer insanity – and even drafts in Chain Saw star Marilyn Burns as the terrorized woman-in-peril alongside William Finley and Mel Ferrer.

Special Features:

  • Brand new 2K transfer from the original camera negative
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations
  • Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Audio commentary with co-writer and producer Mardi Rustam, make-up artist Craig Reardon, and stars Roberta Collins, William Finley, and Kyle Richards
  • New introduction to the film by director Tobe Hooper
  • Brand new interview with Hooper
  • My Name is Buck: Star Robert Englund discusses his acting career
  • The Butcher of Elmendorf: The Legend of Joe Ball – The story of the South Texas bar owner on whom Eaten Alive is loosely based
  • 5ive Minutes with Marilyn Burns – The star of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre talks about working on Eaten Alive
  • The Gator Creator: Archival interview with Hooper
  • Original theatrical trailers for the film under its various titles Eaten Alive, Death Trap, Starlight Slaughter, and Horror Hotel
  • US TV and Radio Spots
  • Alternate credits sequence
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Gary Pullin
  • Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film, illustrated with original archive stills and posters

If you’ve ever played the video game Five Nights at Freddy’s you’re currently sitting in one of two camps … those who loved it, and those who sat through it in a state of disbelief that this game has gained the traction that it has. Speaking of traction…

THR is reporting that Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to Five Nights at Freddy’s, the popular video game series created by Scott Cawthon.

The feature adaptation will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment as well as Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions.

The game takes place in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a darker version of Chuck-E-Cheese, where an animatronic animal band performs kiddy songs by day, and goes on murderous rampages by night. The goal of the game is survive a night locked inside, knowing that a furry death machine might jump out of the dark at any moment.

We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith.

The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” said Cawthon. Um… there was a story?!? Do tell!

The project is currently out to writers.

Adam Stone and Jay Ireland will exec produce. Jon Berg and Nik Mavinkurve are overseeing for Warners.

iZombie: Recap of Episode 1.04 – Liv and Let Clive; First Look at Episode 1.05 – Flight of the Living Dead

“Liv and Let Clive,” Episode 1.04 of “iZombie,” opens with a look at Blaine and Jackie in bed. There seems to be some strange romance here that stems beyond a simple booty call. Blaine, the bastard that he is, may still feel some form of actual affection, which only strengthens his polarizing personality. Funny, charming, and somehow slightly compassionate? He’s quickly becoming a magnetic figure in the show (for the record, the Sufjan Stevens song that plays as the intro unfolds adds a strangely uplifting vibe to the scene and actually feels as though it humanizes Blaine a bit… in a very weird way).

Enough with Blaine. We move right on over to Liv’s current conundrum. She shows up unexpectedly at Major’s place. He’s just gotten out of the shower, standing before Liv in his seductive stance. The conversation is going smoothyl until Major’s new girl comes strolling into the room wearing nothing but one of his shirts. We experience an awkward introduction between the two. Liv’s got her emotional feelings back because she’s clearly perturbed by the encounter. Her love for Major still burns but obviously cannot work out as the situation stands.

Back in the morgue we find Ravi working on a dead gang member. Moments before Liv opens the corpse’s brain, her brother shows up. He’ll be staying with Liv for a few days due to some family issues. It’s a brief introduction that will no doubt come into play on a greater level soon. Before we learn of his place in the story, we see Liv feasting on the brains of the John Doe on the metal slab. A quick shift, and Clive shows up, informing Liv he knew the man: Sammy Wong. Clive is very insistent on handling the case himself, and Liv quickly learns why: She has a vision of Clive beating the crap out of Ray, someone associated with Sammy, to whom he turns and issues a warning, “Stay out of it, Sammy, or you’re up next!”

Does Clive carry secrets we couldn’t have foreseen? It appears so.

We get more emotion from Liv, as she vents freely and expresses extreme jealousy of Major and his new girl, Corinne. She suggests Ravi move in with Major – who’s looking for a roommate – in order to essentially cock-block Corinne, as odd as that sounds. Ravi isn’t too into it, but it’s clear he feels for the woman. This isn’t exactly an easy time in her life… or what’s left of her life.

Cut back to Blaine, who is dealing with a couple of hoodlums whom he has running some shady errands for him. We know what he’s got these hooligans doing: tracking meals. Just when we can start to like Blaine, he reminds us that not only was he a scumbag in life, he’s a scumbag in un-life.

Liv is digging into the new case between Clive and Sammy. She digs enough to discover that Clive, who once worked Vice, found himself a little too deep in his work and subsequently got suspended. As Liv puts it soon after, “It looks a lot like Clive’s a dirty cop.” Liv’s likely jumping to conclusions as Clive has come off as a decent human being, but we’ll find out soon enough. Liv and Ravi pursue Ray, the man she saw being beaten in her vision. She ends up at a local shop where the clerk agrees to help her find Ray, but first she has another vision, this time seeing a man on the verge of being tortured when Clive walks in. One man asks Clive how he could have believed Ray was the rat. Is that Sammy being tortured? The vision is a little hazy, making it tough to call. Before Liv can skip out, she’s confronted by AJ, one of the men doing the torturing. “I heard you’re looking for Ray,” he declares, a smug look on his face.

Just as Liv and Ravi are leaving the shop, Clive shows up. They aim to hang around and trail Clive, but one of the guys from the store spots them and jumps on the phone. They make a break for it. And it’s back home for Liv, who’s feeling particularly paranoid.

A quick look at Blaine’s henchmen shows us they’re fed up with handling his dirty work. They decide it may be a good idea to go into business for themselves, pick up some big bucks. They’re about as sharp as the point of a bowling ball, and it’s going to land them in big trouble, but they’re determined. But that little sliver of info pales in comparison to what’s going down back at Liv’s place. She gets out of the shower to find Clive waiting for her. He doesn’t look too happy. Clive fills her in on some of the details of the case, and it seems he may not be the villainous crooked cop we’ve been led to believe.

Back at the morgue Major shows up and has a conversation with Ravi. Liv’s put in word with Major that Ravi is in need of a new roommate so Major is there to see if he might be interested in moving in. We see where this is headed, and Liv’s plan to deposit Ravi between Major and his new love is looking like it’s going to pay off. Major and Ravi don’t hit it off as best buds initially, but they’re certainly decent, and future living arrangements are starting to look a little obvious. Liv is going to get her wish; whether it works to stymie the relationship between Major and Corinne remains to be seen.

Blaine’s runners are continuing to move in on his monopoly. They target Jackie and offer her a much better deal on brains. Jackie likes the idea of cutting costs so she entertains these two morons – who are clearly digging their own graves.

Back to Major and Ravi’s interaction; things are actually looking up. These guys are finding quite a bit of common ground, and it now feels inevitable that we’re eying future roommates. Liv arrives at the morgue and discovers that Ravi is indeed going to move in with Major. It turns out these two are far more similar than we initially believed. Both actually look excited at the idea of being roomies. Although Liv is now quite disconcerted by her interaction with Clive (which she fills Ravi in on), her plans are falling right into place.

Liv’s concern over Clive’s true personality is boiling to the surface. She discloses all the details she knows to Ravi, who still feels Clive is a good human being, perhaps more importantly, a good, honest cop doing his job, as dangerous as it may be. But Ravi’s stance isn’t convincing Liv, who continues to look into the case and Clive in particular. But while out getting her detective on, she spots one of the gang members trailing her. And then we get another vision, a quick look at the murder of Sammy, and an interesting revelation. Ray is an undercover cop, and he’s in danger; Clive shows up just in the nick of time for Liv to warn him that his life is in jeopardy.

It turns out Clive isn’t the bad guy we’ve been led to believe. He explains the situation to Liv, who finally admits to all the visions she’s seen. But Clive still insists that Liv keep herself far away from this case. It will be no Liv and Clive solving this murder; Clive’s on his own. And it has to be that way because Liv’s life will be put in serious jeopardy if she dives into this particular case. And speaking of lives in jeopardy, the two muscle-heads who have been running for Blaine have been made. And Blaine ends any thought of competition with two bullets. Headshots will end all. Interestingly enough, we get a look at the stockpile of bodies Blaine is gathering. He’s certainly looking to make being a zombie a very lucrative affair.

As the episode comes to an end, the Asian gang in focus have been apprehended. The case is just about wrapped. Leader AJ, however, still remains at large; and Clive is headed for the shop to find the man. But AJ isn’t at the shop; he’s hidden in Liv’s apartment. He attacks Liv and calls her out in her affiliation with law enforcement before attempting to bring an end to the petite and appealing ghoul. His attempt to physically dismantle Liv doesn’t go quite as planned. After consuming Sammy’s brains, Liv learned the ways of martial arts, and given her abnormal strength and newfound knowledge, she’s able to overcome the menace. It isn’t with ease and the beating doesn’t come without mercy, but Liv certainly puts a stamp on things.

While the conclusion of this specific episode felt a bit rushed (we do get a look at Ravi officially moving in with Major), the story as a whole offers – once again – the kind of layering that holds the attention of the viewer. The romantic side of things is still alive and well without being too opposing, and it is most certainly one of the charming qualities of the show. It feels, at times, a bit cliche given the CW’s lineup, but in this case it is needed, and it is welcomed. There are no two ways about it: “iZombie” is a kick-ass series and a fine alternative to overtly serious shows like “The Walking Dead.”

Ready for next week? Here’s a preview of Episode 1.05, “Flight of the Living Dead.”
