Body Studied by Oscilloscope

Ahead of its premiere at this year’s Stanley Film Festival, Oscilloscope has acquired the U.S. rights to the Slamdance favorite Body.

Dan Berk and Robert Olsen wrote and directed Body. Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, Lauren Molina, and Larry Fessenden star.

Synopsis:
Best friends Holly, Cali, and Mel are home for the holidays. It’s a couple nights before Christmas, and the three girls are bored out of their minds, sitting at Mel’s parents’ house. As she is wont to do, Cali suggests they go out and have some fun. Her uncle owns a mansion one town over and happens to be out of town for the holiday. Better yet, he’s given her permission to party there. Despite Holly’s reservations, the girls head out.

It’s only after hours of partying and taking advantage of the home’s many amenities that the girls discover Cali has lied to them. This is not her uncle’s house. It belongs to a family that Cali used to babysit for. And it becomes quite clear that permission was certainly never granted to party there. Holly and Mel, infuriated with Cali, immediately head for the door. Unfortunately, before they can leave, the groundskeeper of the estate arrives. The girls attempt to flee but wind up running into him on their way out. An altercation follows, and in a freak accident the girls push him down the stairs. He falls awkwardly, breaking his neck and ultimately dying.

For the remainder of the film we watch the girls slowly unravel as they decide what to do about the dead body in the living room. But covering their tracks might mean adding to the body count…

Tell Tale Heart Tells Tell Tale Lies

The work of Edgar Allan Poe has been adapted and re-adapted for the screen many times, and it doesn’t seem like that will ever stop. The man has quite the following and rightly so. Just ask Joe Carroll (remember when that show had something to do with Poe?). In any event, another one is on its way.

Deadline reports that Beau Mirchoff (MTV’s “Awkward”) and Alexa PenaVega are set to star in Tell-Tale Lies, a modern take on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic chiller.

Synthetic Cinema International and Stargazer Films have begun production on the film directed by Colin Theys from John Doolan’s script. It revolves around four friends at a prestigious university whose promising futures are jeopardized when they become connected to the accidental death of a classmate. When another student says she knows about their involvement, the friends panic and start to plot her murder.

Renee Olstead, Michael J. Willett, Bailey De Young, Sara Kapner, Ethan Phillips, Anthony Del Negro, Sean Patrick Thomas, and John Heard round out the cast.

The Nightmare Poster Welcomes You to the Scariest Place in the World

Rodney Ascher’s (Room 277) new film, The Nightmare, has gotten an official one-sheet ahead of its premiere at the upcoming Stanley Film Festival. Look for the film in North America in select theaters and on VOD on June 5 via Gravitas Ventures.

The Nightmare is a documentary-horror film exploring the phenomenon of sleep paralysis through the eyes of eight people. Victims of this scary malady often find themselves trapped between the sleeping and awake realms, unable to move but aware of their surroundings while subject to disturbing sights and sounds.

Synopsis:
THE NIGHTMARE’S subjects hail from different backgrounds and walks of life, but share eerily similar visions of malevolent, near-human beings that grow increasingly aggressive the longer the sleep paralysis recurs. Are these just random hallucinations or something more? Rational explanations get challenged by the similarities of the “shadow people” multiple subjects describe looming over them. Ascher, who has first hand knowledge of sleep paralysis, brings the full intensity of this experience to the screen while maintaining empathy and respect for his subjects. As the film unfolds, distinctions between the documentary and horror genres fade as do easy lines between reality and the imagination.

Her chance to escape comes in the form of Peter Hemmings (Penn), a hipster celebrity photographer who has traveled back to his hometown of Spearfish, South Dakota, with a pack of models, intent on copying the killers’ intense and unapologetic artistry and use it for an important ad campaign. When he learns Colleen is their muse, Peter resolves to make her his own and use her as the centerpiece of a photo campaign in Los Angeles. But before Colleen can leave her old life behind, she must contend with the desires of her murderous stalkers, who have chosen her last night in town to execute their most provocative work to date.

Lake Placid vs. Anaconda Premieres This Saturday; Syfy Releases Trailer

$
0
0

One has to wonder just how much faith Syfy has in its original movie Lake Placid vs. Anaconda given that the network waited until about 48 hours before the film’s premiere to put out a trailer for it.

Syfy has been cranking out Lake Placid and Anaconda TV sequels for several years now so why not a versus film? I’m sure it sounded like a great idea on paper; based on this preview it looks to be less so on film.

Yancy Butler returns as a character presumably killed in a previous Lake Placid sequel. Robert England looks to be playing the same character that got killed in the opening minutes of Hatchet. The crocodile effects look like holdovers from the previous made-for-TV sequels. The anaconda… Ugh. The anaconda looks like a digital effect nobody finished rendering.

I ask in all seriousness:  Was the film production so rushed they didn’t have time to finish the effects, or was the budget not there?

IMDB lists the plot as “a giant alligator goes head to head with a giant anaconda. The town sheriff must find a way to destroy the two monsters before they kill the whole town.

Either whoever submitted that synopsis doesn’t know the difference between a crocodile and an alligator or they decided to scrap the continuity of the previous Lake Placid films by changing the creature’s species.

Lake Placid vs. Anaconda premieres this Saturday night at 9/8 Central.

Is it just me or is the anaconda looking a tad anorexic? Poor thing looks like it’s starving. No wonder it wants to eat a monstrous crocagator.
