This is so damned cool. I mean ridiculously cool. In other words, there’s cool, and then there’s this. One of the most haunting things about the Phantasm franchise is its soundtrack, and Phantom City Creative is bringing it back on vinyl with amazing artwork. Read on!

From the Press Release:
The PHANTASM soundtrack returns to vinyl after a long 35-year absence with stunning new art by Phantom City Creative.

Commenting on the enduring appeal of PHANTASM’s iconic score, director Don Coscarelli said, “What amazes me is that the score has continued to gain traction as the decades have passed. I have met literally thousands of fans who continue to praise Fred Myron and Malcolm Seagrave’s work to this day. I want to thank the terrific crew at Mondo for dreaming up the idea of re-releasing this score in warm analog vinyl despite us all now living in a cold digital world.”

The vinyl and screenprint (artwork by Mike Saputo) will be available on Thursday, April 30, at Alamo Drafthouse Richardson’s screening of PHANTASM. Cast members Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, and Kat Lester and filmmaker Don Coscarelli will be in attendance. The vinyl and poster will also be available at the Texas Frightmare Weekend and online at a future date.

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 3.08 – The Pit; First Details on Episode 3.09 – Crazy

Yours truly was off recap duty last week, but now I’m back and will be around through the season finale.  So… where were we?

Previously, on “Bates Motel”: Norma used the incriminating flash drive in her possession to blackmail Bob Paris to benefit her motel business (including the inclusion of a swimming pool to be installed at the Bates at Bob Paris’ expense); Dylan found himself growing closer to Emma, even as he learned from her father about the (rather expensive) possibility of moving Emma’s name to the top of the organ donor list – leading Dylan to take a dangerous gunrunning job from mountain man Chick, all to Caleb’s consternation; Norma, in a moment of weakness, spilled the beans about Norman’s culpability in the death of his father to James Finnigan, whom she enlists to speak with Norman – a meeting that finds the would-be shrink suggesting to Norman that he might be sexually attracted to his mother, a suggestion that enrages Norman to such a degree that he attacks Finnigan and sends him racing from the home; the Bates House saw a large gathering of visitors sit down to a meal with one another, including the previously estranged Caleb and the currently Norma-smitten Sheriff Romero; the last episode then ended with a rather (okay… extremely) creepy moment of Norman caressing a sleeping Norma’s thigh.

As tonight’s episode (#3.08 – “The Pit”) opens, we find Dylan reminding Norma that something must be done about Norman, just before she notices a work crew in the front lot of her motel, digging up the ground for – as they insist – her swimming pool, compliments of Bob Paris. Meanwhile, Romero retrieves Norma’s old car from the dealership where she’d traded it in during her flight from sanity. He returns the car to a grateful Norma and takes a quick break from their burgeoning sexual tension to notice the hole being dug for her swimming pool – a hole that is so large and deep, it seems more like a mass grave. And a message.

Romero pays a visit to Bob Paris to discuss this vague threat, even as Paris had spent the morning questioning (and torturing) Finnigan for any information regarding Norma’s flash drive, or really anything that might give him some manner of leverage over Norma. Paris uses one vital piece of gained info (that Norman murdered his father and that Norma had been lying all this time to keep that fact a secret) to manipulate Romero and turn him against Norma. When Romero pays her a visit to question her about this, she lies yet again – fully severing their friendship and sending Romero away in a huff.

As all of this plays out, Dylan is prepped by Chick for his gunrunning job. Caleb appears and eventually just insists that he ride along with Dylan to the meet. Emma breaks up with Norman – even as she grows closer and closer to Dylan – leading Norman to brood in his room and hallucinate yet again (his deceased dog, this time). Dylan and Caleb eventually take their trip, only to find themselves in a gunfight with their double-crossing contacts at the drop point.

Back at the Bates house, Norman eventually confides in Norma the assumptions that Finnigan made about his attraction to her. Norma, bless her heart, tries to excuse this in the worst possible way – insisting that there’s nothing wrong with him before bear-hugging the poor boy and dragging him into bed alongside her. Norma eventually seeks out Finnigan, only to find him beaten, bruised, and well on his way to leaving town. Before he departs, he informs her that he revealed Norman’s role in his father’s death to Paris as he was being tortured. Norma tells Norman this, leading to a heated conversation between the two that eventually finds Norma exploding on him – shouting out that the stress of being his mother is killing her: ”You’re killing me, Norman!” (mind the tea, Norma).

Norman, devastated, is soon visited by Figment Norma. This imaginary version of his mother attempts to seduce him, sending him racing away into the night – down the dark road right into town, right up to a solitary figure standing just inside the town limits: Bradley Martin, returned home at long last.

Overall, tonight’s episode of “Bates Motel” was solid if not spectacular, boasting the handsome production values and uniformly excellent performances one expects from this show, while dropping the ball a bit when it came to the show’s momentum. That’s not to say that nothing happened – indeed, there was plenty of plot to chew over by episode’s end. However, the lack of urgency in this episode reminds one of this season’s somewhat middling initial installment. Worse than that, the episode’s gunfight seemed as hilariously out of place in this show as any moment in last season’s pot wars storyline.

If there’s one major issue I have with this series (which I otherwise love), it’s its tendency to go too far over the top with the crime/drug/noir angle the show insists on featuring. It’s a shame, as Dylan and Caleb are two of the show’s most fascinating characters and are strong enough to carry a subplot without the need to resort to ho-hum action sequences.

Still, for all that, the episode was very much worth the watch. And, with only two episodes left this season, one imagines the following installments will manage to successfully ratchet up the show’s tension considerably. Here’s looking forward to them.

“Bates Motel” Episode 3.09 – “Crazy” (airs 5/4/15)
Norman ends up spending the day with a surprise visitor. Norma is determined to stop some secrets from being revealed.

Scream Factory Announces Italian Horrors Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness to Blu-ray for Summer

Though I’m all in favor of some of the forgotten gems of the 1990’s direct-to-video boom getting some 21st century Blu-ray lovin’, not exactly sure Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness are all that deserving.

That said, I’m sure there’s an audience for Scream Factory’s just announced double feature Blu-ray of Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness (coming in late August).

Metamorphosis is probably only remembered for its Frankenhooker-esque VHS box with light-up eyes and an electrical noise it made when you pressed a button on the front.

Italian b-movie actor George Eastman directed Metamorphosis, a 1990 Fly knock-off about a genius geneticist slowly turning into a homicidal lizard man after his experiment goes wrong. After all, if the experiment went right, it wouldn’t make for much of a movie.

Gotta say, I’ve seen this one and came away thinking the premise sounded a lot more entertaining than the results. I’d be far more interested if they were giving the Blu-ray treatment to the vastly superior Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor, also from 1990.

The other half of this double feature is Troll 2 director Claudio Fragasso’s 1990 spookfest Beyond Darkness about a minister and his wife moving into a haunted house with typically sinister results.

Never seen Beyond Darkness, but amongst the user review headlines that came up when I looked it up on IMDB were “boring and incoherent,” “Yaaaaaaaawn,” “Not Even Bob Villa Could Fix This House,” and “Hip Priest!” Seemed pretty skippable until I read “Hip Priest!” Sold!

Both films star actor Gene Lebrock. Two of his only six movies. Four more, and we can have a complete box set.

Terrordrome: Rise of the Boogeymen (Video Game)

terrordromeDeveloped by Huracan Studios

Available for free from website

There’s been some debate on the internet recently about the validity of Terrordrome: Rise of the Boogeymen. I vaguely remember hearing about the game some time between 1 and 3 years ago, and I immediately lumped it in with M.U.G.E.N. as a novelty internet project. With graphics that look like a FMV game file got corrupted and more copyright infringement than a Carlos Mencia stand-up special, I saw two futures for the game. The first option was that it would share the fate of many fan Sonic remasterings and be killed before it had a chance to breathe. The second was that it would be so comically bad that no one took any time to notice it existed, and it would go by quietly existing for a diehard few. I never imagined that the game would gain any real fanbase. A swarm of angry tweets and FB comments would prove me wrong, as the game seems to have a large following despite all odds.

To me, the game fit into a similar category as Necrostorm’s Death Cargo, a violent pseudo FMV game utilizing a custom engine. I will likely never review Death Cargo, or see it for that matter, because many people are rightly skeptical that it actually exists. Necrostorm is certainly a movie company, known for making insanely low budget “splatter films” that reach a level of gore that defies all sense and decency. I watch horror to a level that someone should probably hold an intervention, and Necrostorm movies still disturb me a bit. At least 4 months ago they were still releasing free DLC, so I’m going to assume it isn’t just some elaborate scam, but for a long time there was no reason to assume that the whole thing wasn’t either a trick or some elaborate contemporary art experiment.

So that is the mentality I had coming into Terrordrome: distrustful. I grew up in an era of gaming where game mods would in equal measure add %400 new content and blow up your computer. I cannot tell you how many times I had to reinstall Red Alert 2 before I got the “Mooman’s Rule” mod to work, and you might as well try to learn Sanskrit before thinking you can get multiple mods to run simultaneously. Looking at the cheap site design and low-res screenshots, I was certain that the whole thing was about to delete my system32 folder.

While a functioning game, it is certainly the product of fans rather than professional developers. The controls are tricky, and features minimum. It’s certainly a notch above flash games, some of which have crawled their way onto Steam, but it doesn’t at all feel like a finished product. There’s a bare bones story mode that laughably tries to tie all the characters together, which I do not mean derisively. It is campy and doesn’t take itself close to seriously, and just kind of expects you to be along for the ride.

Combat wise, the game is surprisingly functional. Grabs, blocks, high and low attacks form the basis of combat, with special attacks filling out the movelist. There are supermoves that can be executed when you charge an energy bar, and every round you have two charges of a special consumable attack. These range between characters, but generally serve as a ranged disable to set up for combos.

What actually impressed me about the game was the character variety. The 14 character roster is all comprised of memorable horror faces, but this is a free game using the M.U.G.E.N. engine, so I was expecting every character to be a half baked button masher. To my surprise, the characters all have personality. Jason moves slower, but has bursts of murderous speed in his specials. He switches between iconic series weaponry, and focuses on devastating melee to dominant. Ash Williams has a good mix of charges, pushes, and midrange. The Candyman has a number of displacement moves that allows him to ambush you and close the distance. It isn’t what you will get in a mainstream fighter, but was close enough that it impressed me.

There are definitely negatives to the game. Between the three game modes—Story, Versus, and Training—you can see pretty much everything the game has to offer in a couple of hours. The story mode is pretty tedious, as it consists of 13 rounds where you have to beat every other character in the game. For your efforts, you are rewarded with a series of still frames with poorly translated Russian to English text. I know the studio is probably two dudes from Russia, but the babble that comes out is “All Your Base” status. Playing through all 13 fights over and over again gets repetitive fast, so I doubt it will last anyone more than a couple of playthroughs.

There are some minor design bugs too that I’m sure would have been smoothed out with some money. You have to sit through the introductory cutscene every time you want to exit the story mode or change modes, which gets old at about the second time you see it. The training mode can’t be extended past the standard 99 second rounds, so you have to go back to the character select over and over if you want to practice.

In terms of gameplay, the hit boxes can be a bit inconsistent. There are random invulnerability frames during the performance of certain moves, which can lead to unpredictable ranged exchanges. The time between when you are downed and when you are considered up and can be hit again is a bit too long to facilitate fast combat. It also does that bullshit fighting game difficulty of old were later enemies can just pull off absurd strings of moves that no person could possibly input. If the final boss is Pinhead, then god help you, because you are about to be subjected to a chain-spam-teleport-grab-combo hell worthy of the cenobites.

That all being said, this is probably the best bad game I’ve played in a while. It’s fundamentally entertaining, and there’s only so much you can hate on a game whose opening disclaimer is “this game is free, if you paid for it you were ripped off.” You can’t really trash a game with that kind of self aware honesty. What I take away from my time with Terrordrome: Rise of the Boogeymen is a profound desire to see what kind of product would come out if there was money behind it. The concept is awesome, and even this horribly broken rendition is still fun enough to recommend. It won’t ever happen, but if all the licenses could come together and back a true horror fighter, it would be a fanboy’s dream come true. As it stands, it’s a fun diversion. It certainly is a real game.

The Evil Within: The Consequence (Video Game DLC)

The Evil WithinAvailable on PC (reviewed), Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360

Rated M for Mature

Distributed by Bethesda Softworks

Back in March, I reviewed the first part of The Evil Within’s DLC trilogy, titled The Assignment, and basically crowned it as the second coming of horror Christ. I won’t retread why, as you can easily read it here (hyperlink remember), and double site traffic gets me all giddy. Picking up where the first part left off, The Consequence follows Julie Kidman as she seeks to not only stop Ruvik, but also the mysterious Mobius overseer invading her mind. It is a thrilling conclusion to the two part story, and heralds a bright future for the third piece, The Keeper.

The Consequence follows in its predecessor’s footsteps of offering tense stealth/puzzle horror with a more concrete narrative. Fun story: when my editor first beat The Evil Within, he texted me, “So, what the fuck was going on in that game.” After taking a few minutes to try and piece together a coherent response, I realized that I too had no clue. One of my problems with The Evil Within was the array of plot holes, and this episode does a good job of filling them up and paving them over. By the time the credits role, the game basically all makes sense, which is an astounding feat considering what they were working with. Best of all, it doesn’t feel contrived, leading me to wonder if this was all planned as the plot from the get go or if just a seriously talented writer was in charge of the DLC story.

More than that, the episode does a great job of expanding the world and creating a unique dilemma for Julie to tackle. The shadowy Mobius director doesn’t feel like just a Christmas special villain, but an extension of a large and unexplored entity in the original world. His presence and power is well explained, but doesn’t ever over explain. The sense of mystery integral to good horror is still there, but without the under-explanation that is so commonly supplanted for real intrigue.

As with the previous chapter, most of the time outside of purely expository segments is spent sneaking around, but there is a distinct focus on dispatching enemies this time around. A new mechanic allows you to push enemies off of roofs, and there always seemed to be enough axes to provide instant stealth kills this time around. It was a bit disappointing that there weren’t as many creative options, but the faster tone worked well with the streamlined narrative focus.

This time around, you also get to partake in some gunplay. The Assignment’s pre-scripted shooting gallery disguised as a shooting segment was fun, but didn’t reflect the tense combat that made the base game so popular. This time around, you actually get a gun for a good quarter of the DLC. At first you find a pistol in a construction yard, and theoretically shoot barrels to tactically dispatch groups. Practically, you just shoot everything because ammo is abundant. After this short sequence, you get to fight the spotlight headed boss from the previous episode, which stood out as being both intuitive and satisfying. A bit easy, perhaps, but with some decent mechanical challenge that takes some learning.

After that, you trip over a rock and lose your pistol, and are unarmed until you get a double barreled shotgun. The clunky and powerful handcannon fits the DLC well, as each blast counts as one shot and must be reloaded. You can only hold 6 shots total, and reload times are killer, so grouping is crucial if you want to survive. Ammo is satisfyingly scarce, but if you play smart it’s never an issue.

Along with the gunplay is a new glow-stick portion, which I wish played a larger part. You have unlimited sticks, but can only have three active at a time, making the game a dangerous mix of leapfrog and trying to check at a distance. Unfortunately, they never come back into play after the segment. I was really hoping that they would fit into the light puzzles that made the previous chapter so unique, but unfortunately those are largely absent as well. You still use your flashlight to reveal pathways and hidden numbers, but they didn’t evolve on the concept at all and it plays a much smaller part. It works well in the pacing of this chapter, so don’t take it as a huge criticism, but I do feel that it was a missed opportunity.

It all adds up to a truly epic multi-stage boss fight that caps off the two part series on a high note. The fight reflects the nature of the antagonist, is unique in design, feels natural despite its extra-narrative nature, and most importantly feels like an accomplishment. It’s a lesson in good boss design, something that has been largely missing from the action/horror game genre for some time now.

All the positives aside, The Consequence suffers from an overall lack of variety. There are fewer enemy types than The Assignment, and combat situations are less diverse, generally boiling down to either shooting or walking up behind the thing you want to kill. There are a couple of moments where you have the option of trapping zombies in locked rooms, but is too complicated given the available “axe-to-the-head” plan. Likewise, enemies aren’t used as creatively. The exploding corpse enemies didn’t serve as a complex puzzle, with their scant few appearances being little more than bottle toss games of fetch. If The Assignment felt like an obstacle course, this is like an obstacle course you can cheat at by walking around it.

As much as I liked this episode, it is clear that far more care went into the story side than the gameplay. It feels like a straight line from story segment to story segment, with brief puzzle/combat to just remind you that this is a video game and not a visual novel. It doesn’t feel like the challenge segments are part of a natural world. This is especially apparent during a segment where Ruvik is attempting to mind control Leslie using paintings that shoot out blood. It takes a moment to burn them, so you have to be careful to only burn them when the patrolling enemies are looking the other way. You would think that the imminent possession would offer some kind of time constraint or that the screaming paintings you light on fire would alert enemies, but no, the whole thing is just a glorified switch flip. It could just as easily been you rummaging through a drawer for a keycard or turning a valve, and the segments would have been basically the same.

When I break it down, there are more things that I disliked about The Consequence than I did with The Assignment, so it does beg the question of why I liked The Consequence more. Narrative is very important to me, so crafting a well thought out and attentive story makes up for a lot of missing light puzzles and traps to lure things into. The Consequence’s greatest accomplishment is wrapping up the previous story while creating new and most importantly natural plot points to be covered in the future. It doesn’t ask questions for the sake of asking them, but instead expands the world.

Let me explain a bit what I mean by this. Around Saw 4, the movies began answering questions I didn’t have. They were trying to keep the series going, so introduced Hoffman as the new antagonist. They gave the vague explanation of “Amanda and John couldn’t have moved all these bodies by themselves, they were a woman and a sickly old man! They must have had a large male to help them.” This was something I had never considered, because of course I didn’t, it’s totally irrelevant. That’s kind of how most video games expand on their stories. For example, explaining Albert Wesker’s motivation by saying he was actually a failed experiment of a superweapon program is all fine and dandy if it’s the first game, but explaining it 7 games in after already explaining 3 other times why he is doing what he is doing feels like bullshit.

The Consequence doesn’t do that. It answers questions that were not already answered, and creates new intrigue in areas that reasonably matter, but weren’t previously explored. It gives new life to the series in a way it didn’t have before, but without losing the core of what gave the game personality. It’s a tough act to accomplish, but it cements it as a solid and unskippable installment to the series. At the price of just $20 for both episodes, the real consequence would be missing it.

About an hour or so ago we told you that a trailer for The Last Witch Hunter wasn’t gonna be far behind the one-sheet release, and lo and behold, here it is! Dig it!

The movie will open on October 23, 2015, in wide release.

Breck Eisner is directing the film from Summit Entertainment. Tormented by the loss of his family and cursed with immortal life, the last witch hunter (Vin Diesel) is all that stands between humanity and the combined forces of the most horrifying witches in history.

Mark Canton is producing via his Mark Canton Productions banner along with Bernie Goldmann and Diesel via his One Race Entertainment banner. Erik Feig, Geoff Shaevitz, and Matthew Janzen oversee the project for the studio.

Synopsis:
Five hundred years ago, war raged between humankind and witches, vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe, including Kaulder (Vin Diesel), a valiant warrior who managed to slay an all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments before her death, the Queen exacted her revenge by cursing Kaulder with immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Kaulder has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones.

Today, he is the only one of his kind–-the last witch hunter. With the help of Father Dolan, a Catholic priest, and a mystical arsenal hidden beneath New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, he continues to pursue the renegades and outlaws who endanger humanity. Chief among their adversaries is Belial, a powerful rebel witch who Kaulder believes has found a way to restore the Queen Witch to power and reignite her campaign to destroy the human world.

With the help of Chloe, a goodhearted young witch (Rose Leslie), Kaulder sets out to stop Belial before he can set his plan in motion, but allies in unexpected places keep the evil witch one step ahead in a cunning cat-and-mouse pursuit that will determine the survival of the human race.

Archstone Distribution has announced that the horror/dark comedy feature L.A. Slasher, directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger, will receive a North American theatrical release starting June 12th in select AMC theaters.

“We are very excited to take L.A. Slasher to the silver screen,” Archstone Distribution’s President & CEO Brady Bowen stated. “It is a highly entertaining film with a unique voice that we know audiences are going to love!”

L.A. Slasher producer Daniel Sollinger remarked, “My team and I are thrilled to be working with Archstone as they have a steady track record for bringing high quality films to audiences worldwide. We are very proud to be on their roster.”

With an all-star cast that includes Mischa Barton, Dave Bautista, Danny Trejo, Drake Bell, Eric Roberts, Brooke Hogan, Abigail Wright, Elizabeth Morris, and Andy Dick (in his comeback vehicle), L.A. Slasher is a social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous.

Exploring why it has become acceptable to become an influential star based on no merit or talent, the story follows the titular Slasher character as he systematically abducts these “stars,” much to the joy of the online public, who view his exploits via social media and who subsequently and enthusiastically support his mantra of “Death to Reality TV.”

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and Finds a New UK Trailer

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (review) arrives in UK theatres on May 22nd, and to celebrate, a new trailer for the world’s first Iranian vampire western has arrived.

Strange things are afoot in Bad City. The Iranian ghost town, home to prostitutes, junkies, pimps, and other sordid souls, is a place that reeks of death and hopelessness, where a lonely vampire is stalking the towns most unsavory inhabitants. But when boy meets girl, an unusual love story begins to blossom… blood red.

Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. Amped by a mix of Iranian rock, techno, and Morricone-inspired riffs, its airy, anamorphic, black-and-white aesthetic and artfully drawn-out scenes combine the simmering tension of Sergio Leone with the surrealism of David Lynch.

The TV series based upon The Omen and the exploits of everyone’s favorite Antichrist, “Damien,” is having a shift in venue. Deadline is reporting that Lifetime’s straight-to-series drama follow-up to the horror classic, originally set up at Lifetime, will air on sibling A&E.

As part of the move, the order for the show, from Glen Mazzara and Fox 21 TV Studios, has been upped from 6 to 10 episodes. This marks the first major synergetic play since Lifetime programming chief Rob Sharenow also took over A&E two months ago as EVP and general manager A&E and Lifetime.

In his TV directing debut, Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth) will helm and executive produce the first episode. “Merlin” star Bradley James (pictured) has landed the title role.

Produced by Fox TV Studios, the ten-episode “Damien” follows the adult life of Damien Thorn (James), the mysterious child from the 1976 film who has grown up, seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Haunted by his past, Damien must now come to terms with his true destiny — that he is the Antichrist, the most feared man throughout the ages.

“Damien,” slated to premiere in 2015, is written and executive produced by Glen Mazzara via his 44 Strong Productions.
