lost withinDeveloped by Human Head Studios

Available for iOS and Android Tablets

It is rare for us to review mobile games here at DreadCentral, as a marketplace mostly tuned for games to be played in bite size chunks isn’t conducive to a tense horror build. That is part of the reason why it took me so long to review this game (about a three week turnaround, as opposed to my more common few days), as when I found time to pick up my iPad and play for a bit, I’d wipe and flush before I finished a level. It is unfortunate, because Lost Within is a compelling game, but one that will likely be overshadowed by all of the glossier console and PC titles.

Right off the bat, I do not play a lot of mobile games. I have a PC, every console, and an active social life, so I don’t really ever find time to sit on my couch and just pop out my 3DS for a round of the Pokémans. I played Year Walk a while ago and spent an embarrassing amount of time on the Infinity Blade series, and felt that their “minimum upfront, a lot to find” approach to narrative fit the portable nature very well. I didn’t have to invest my full brainpower every time I wanted to play, but could dive into it whenever I wanted to for a different kind of reward.

I think that a lot of people would agree with the core sentiment that at times, most of us will game just to turn our brains off. There is a certain section of my Steam library reserved for games that are played purely by muscle memory, and are my go-tos when intoxicated. The success of cash-clickers has proven as much for the mobile market, and for better or for worse we have come to expect a simple and instantly accessible experience. This is where Lost Within stumbles, as it is too smart for its own good.

Yes, it felt as weird to write that as it did to read it. It seems weird to knock a game for being too thoughtful, but the bottom line is that I had trouble playing Lost Within as a mobile game. It had bite-sized chapters, but a gameplay style and narrative that didn’t fit that. It felt like a console game that I was playing on my iPad, an $10 indie title off of Steam that I play alone in my room at 2 a.m. with the lights off and the door locked.

Gameplay wise, it feels like Outlast if Outlast was trying to get Greenlit on Steam. Sneaking through the halls of an abandoned asylum, the player must avoid baddies by hiding in lockers, but this time with a crafting system. I don’t know why just giving you straight items has been replaced by crafting. The argument has been made that choosing between a Molotov and a health pack is an extra point of tension, but for me it has never been confusing which would be more useful in the moment. It is the Molotov, because health packs are for scrubs that get hit.

Craftable items are pretty standard, but have enough flavor to not feel stale. You get a cloaking device, but it takes the form of a suit you put on to look like the enemies, changing your HUD. There is a detector that lets you see through walls, but it takes the form of a stethoscope. Stun Bombs stun, while Tasers also stun, but with less explosions. Only one of the nine items puts enemies down for good, so sneaking and distractions are going to be the ticket to success. Crafting systems are the worst when the game can be easily beaten without any consumables, making crafting a waste of time. While the game can theoretically be beaten without using items outside of scripted areas, it is well enough designed to provide challenges that are very difficult to overcome without them.

There are much worse things to call gameplay than functional, but it is hard to describe it as anything but when compared to Lost Within’s standout story. Taking part from three perspectives, each character has their own motivation for being at the asylum on the day before its demolition. Starting from the same central point, each explores a different wing of the asylum, each inhabited by a different main baddie. The second chapter stood out to me as having the most unique antagonist, but none really reached above enjoyable cliché. Though the characters are a bit standard, the combination of protagonist and antagonist switch gives each chapter a distinct flavor. It brings variety to an otherwise static environment.

As each of the three characters explores the asylum, the story is again told from three different vantage points. Collectible documents provide a tried and true snippet look into the darker administrative happenings in a way we have all grown to expect, but the real time combination of flashback and present-day is where the story really shines. The game frequently flashes back to the asylum in its heyday, where sinister experiments and patient riots eventually led to its present dilapidated state.

To contrast, the present day reality is more surreal, with shambling experiments and shadowy tendrils blocking your path. The glimpses in the past seem more real, though psychically induced, while the real present seems impossible. It is a unique switch on the dream/reality formula that most importantly makes sense in the end. I am not going to spoil the big twists, so I will leave it by saying that the game wraps up with a satisfying—if not perhaps a bit corny—revelation.

I realize that this review has sounded a bit mechanical compared to my typically flamboyant style. I have plenty good to say about the game, and I don’t think I’ve done the game a disservice in going over the core of what I liked. It is an interesting narrative that surpasses most mobile games in a serviceable stealth/horror shell. It is a great option for people without a gaming PC or console, and at the budget price of just $7 it is hard to say that anyone who owns a tablet shouldn’t give it a shot. It is definitely not a freemium game, so that is already two of its stars right there.

Despite all of that, my gut feeling is that I won’t pick this game up again. I was interested in what was happening while playing, but had to remind myself to play it. If it wasn’t my job to finish it, I don’t know if I would have. I think the issue lies in what I stated at the beginning of my review: the medium doesn’t match the style of the game. The story requires a kind of attention I can’t afford when playing on my iPad. When I am playing my iPad, I am sitting at a sports bar after work having a beer or watching a movie while on a treadmill. I imagine plenty of people use it for their morning commute on the train or between meetings, but none of these places scream horror atmosphere.

I wish I could give the game more praise, as it is certainly a very pretty mobile game that is well told at a price that would be considered budget for twice what it is. It controls well, is simple to learn but hard to master, and narratively compelling. It isn’t anything new, and maybe that has something to do with why I found it so easy to put down, but it certainly isn’t the worst rendition of this type of game. Consider this a tentative recommendation, since I don’t think anyone would be really dissatisfied with this game, but just don’t be surprised if this sits half played in your library.

WyrmwoodStarring Jay Gallagher, Bianca Bradey, Leon Burchill, Luke McKenzie, Yure Covich

Directed by Kiah Roache-Turner

Distributed by Studiocanal

The zombie apocalypse kicks off in highly unusual style when it comes to Kiah Roache-Turner’s rollicking feature debut, Wyrmwood – wherein a strange meteor shower suddenly sees swathes of the outback’s population turn into white-eyed, gas-spewing flesh-eaters.

Caught in the middle of it is Barry (Gallagher), who quickly goes from devoted family man to desperate loner, having been forced to dispatch his wife and young daughter when they succumb to the infection. His only remaining hope is to reach his sister, Brooke (Bradey) – a photographer who lives in a nearby town.

Unbeknownst to him, however, Brooke has already been picked up by a group of military types who most definitely have something more than simple rescue on their minds.

On his travels, Barry comes across a number of fellow survivors, including the hilarious Benny (Burchill), who himself was forced to kill his brother while on a hunting trip, and together they join forces to track down Brooke – drawing the ire of the trained and armed squad who are also on her tail at this point.

Wyrmwood is no standard zombie apocalypse story, however, as the gang discover that the gas which constantly leaks from the zombies’ mouths can actually be used as fuel for vehicles – and so, with some modifications made to their ride including a cage in the rear and a custom gas mask for their fuel-spewing cargo, the remaining survivors hit the road for some The Road Warrior-inspired carnage.

Simply put – Wyrmwood is one of the most entertaining, and wildly inventive, zombie flicks to hit the screen in a long time. Whilst the story is most certainly taken seriously, there’s a consistent undercurrent of Aussie humour which, married with the non-stop pacing, keeps you glued to the action. From the disco-dancing mad scientist to the kinetic vehicular action sequences and the futuristic-married-with-utilitarian aesthetic, there’s never a shortage of something to enjoy as the film progresses.

Even then, writers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner aren’t content to simply pump out another zombie road movie with merely a different aesthetic approach – no, they actually offer something new in their mythos, taking the story down completely unexpected avenues… most notably in the effect of Brooke’s captors’ experiments on her. It’s constantly on the move and constantly offering up surprises and splashes of joy – even if, in the finale, the whole event ends up little more than setup for a sequel, with a cliff-hanger ending that seems to arrive much too abruptly.

The editing, photography and production design are all top notch for what was an ostensibly crowdfunded film, and the cast easily match their quality. Jay Gallagher feels like he’s born to be a star, while Leon Burchill is consistently lovable as the film’s comic relief. Bianca Bradey is convincingly kick-ass as tough chick Brooke – being given most of the more adrenaline-fuelled stunt work – and gives her early victim role a complete flip when she turns the tables on her captors, and ultimately proves to be possibly the most powerful figure in the entire film by the time the credits roll. You go, girl! The rest of the supporting cast are bringing as much game as they can to the proceedings, and it’s hard to pick out a single weak link amongst them.

A stunning debut feature, and certainly one of the best genre flicks to come from the crowdfunding realm, Wyrmwood is a treat that’s not to be missed by anyone who likes their zombies – or, for that matter, simply having fun. It’s in your face, splattery, brash and highly entertaining; like a film that’s just shown up on your doorstep with a crate of beer and the determination to do nothing more but offer you a wild night in.

Studiocanal don’t skimp on the special features with their UK release, either, sporting a cira 50-minute ‘Making of’ that includes plenty of on-set material (including an incredibly hair-raising stunt moment featuring Bradey that could have ended in total disaster!) and proves itself more than worthwhile. We’ve got the original teaser short/scene that was the Roache-Turner brothers’ initial concept pitch for the feature, along with the crowdfunding pitch videos that they used during their campaign. Besides that, there’s a selection of storyboards, a whole bunch of deleted scenes and a very entertaining feature commentary with the brothers behind Wyrmwood‘s brand of cinematic insanity. A very nice package for a great movie.

  • The Wyrmwood Diaries: Behind the Scenes of Wyrmwood
  • The 7 Minute Teaser Scene
  • Crowdfunding Video #1
  • Crowdfunding Video #2
  • Storyboards by the Director

Kevin Bacon Following Up on a Tremors Return?

If there’s one thing we’d like to see come back to the Tremors franchise, it’s Kevin Bacon. Now that his stint on “The Following” has (thankfully) come to an end, the actor has reflected a bit on the series with British newspaper Metro.

Of the film’s effects work Bacon said, “Part of what’s great about that movie is there are next to no digital effects. The monsters are done with puppetry, and it’s still off, funny and scary – it’s a cool accomplishment.” Bacon then stated, “I’d love to do something else with Tremors and revisit the character 25 years later.

Somebody make this happen. Thanks, we’ll wait.

Kevin Bacon

The theatrical release of the original Tremors in 1990 combined suspense-filled action, sci-fi imagination, and witty humor in the tale of a tiny Nevada town terrorized by giant man-eating worms known as Graboids. The Graboids eventually morphed into even more deadly creatures known as Ass Blasters.

The upcoming Tremors 5: Bloodlines is an all-new adventure that travels halfway around the world to South Africa. The Graboids and the Ass Blasters are not only bigger and badder, but Tremors 5 introduces an additional unexpected surprise that raises the stakes in the battle for survival.

Michael Gross (“Anger Management,” “Suits,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Family Ties,” Tremors franchise) returns as weapons enthusiast and expert subterranean creature hunter Burt Gummer with Jamie Kennedy (“The Cleveland Show,” “Ghost Whisperer,” Scream series) as his new right-hand man, tech-savvy Travis. The pair are joined by an international cast as they mount a battle against the deadly creatures that turns out to be far more than they bargained for.

The film is directed by Don Michael Paul (Jarhead 2: Field of Fire, Sniper: Legacy) from a script by John Whelpley (Tremors 3: Back to Perfection) and produced by Ogden Gavanski (The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Fire, Warm Bodies).

Do you like horror stories? What about GG Allin? If the idea of mashing those two together into one literary endeavor doesn’t sound completely off the mark, then we have a Kickstarter campaign with your name written all over it. Figuratively speaking, of course.

Edited ny MP Johnson and Sam Richard, Blood for You: A Literary Tribute to GG Allin brings together a handful of top-notch horror writers to spin elaborate tales centered around the controversial punk legend.

All of the stories carefully and painstakingly tucked inside the aforementioned tome are  centered around GG Allin’s wildest adventures. These stories are pure fiction, but that shouldn’t stop them from providing adventurous readers with hours of debauched entertainment.

But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what the folks responsible for assembling this unbridled madness have to say about Blood for You: A Literary Tribute to GG Alin:

GG Allin’s exploits are legendary. The music, the shows, the violence, the bodily fluids. But GG Allin was confined to a world where he couldn’t fulfill his potential. He punched and kicked at the boundaries, eager for something bigger, something crazier, something much more f*cked up. But the real world refused to give him the adventures he needed.

That’s where this book comes in.

Edited by MP Johnson (Freak Tension zine, The After-Life Story of Pork Knuckles Malone, Dungeons & Drag Queens) and Sam Richard (Daoloth, ex-War//Plague), Blood for You: A Literary Tribute to GG Allin will feature roughly a dozen bizarro fiction and splatterpunk stories detailing the fictional exploits of GG Allin.

At the hands of some of underground fiction’s wildest authors, GG Allin has been offered the opportunity to take his insanity to a level that the real world just couldn’t offer. GG Allin versus monsters? GG Allin in space? GG Allin in all manners of blood-filled, feces-drenched mayhem? Yes!

Blood for You isn’t available yet, but judging from the amount of money they’re currently amassing on Kickstarter, it won’t be long before this project is fully funded. So dig out some spare change and contribute! Swing by the book’s official Kickstarter campaign page for more details.

As we told you back in March, WWE Studios and media mogul Gene Simmons have joined forces to create Erebus Pictures, and the newly launched company announced today that Voltage Pictures will handle international sales for Erebus’ slate. The partnership will kick off with Temple, which was originally acquired and developed by WWE Studios.

“The entire Voltage team and I are incredibly excited to partner with the legendary Gene Simmons, Michael Luisi, and the entire WWE Studios team on this exciting slate of films,” said Jonathan Deckter, President and COO at Voltage Pictures. “With WWE’s marketing muscle and Michael and Gene’s creative direction, we are confident that the Erebus brand will quickly become synonymous with high quality, smart genre films the world over.”

Deckter, a partner in Voltage and the President & COO, along with John Fremes, who recently joined Voltage as President of International Sales and Distribution from Nu Image, will begin discussions with potential Erebus distribution partners at the Cannes Film Market.

Temple, the first film out of the gate with a director soon to be announced, was written by Matt Savelloni (Exile to Babylon) and follows a team of highly trained operatives who find themselves trapped inside an isolated military compound after its artificial intelligence is suddenly shut down. While investigating the source of the malfunction, the crew members begin to experience strange and horrific phenomena as they attempt to uncover who, or what, killed the team previously stationed at the compound.

“We are excited to introduce our label internationally with a sales partner that understands and influences the international marketplace,” said KISS icon Gene Simmons, pictured below.

“We’ve been looking for opportunities to partner with Jonathan, Nicolas Chartier, and the Voltage team; and we’re excited to have found it with Erebus,” said Michael Luisi, President of WWE Studios. “We’re confident their expertise will successfully launch the label worldwide.”

Erebus Pictures, which will produce elevated horror movies, is named after the Greek primordial deity representing the personification of darkness and will leverage WWE’s extensive global platforms from weekly TV shows, including WWE’s flagship programs “Monday Night Raw®” and “SmackDown®,” to digital, social media, and WWE Network® to market its titles.

WWE Studios most recently announced a $35 million revolving credit facility with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Red Sea Media Begins Sales of Cinedigm’s American International Pictures Reinventions

Lou Arkoff, Jeff Katz, and Hal Sadoff have been prepping a reboot of several 1950’s horror classics from American International Pictures for a few years now; and with a fall production start date looming, they’ve joined forces with Red Sea Media for international sales of the films. We have all the details right here so if you’re a fan of old-school horror, read on!

From the Press Release:
Red Sea Media is handling international sales on Cinedigm’s American International Pictures (AIP) reinventions of the 1950s genre classics. Lou Arkoff (The Messengers, Darkness Falls, Inspector Gadget), Jeff Katz (Freddy vs. Jason, Snakes on a Plane, Wolverine), and Hal Sadoff (The Breed, The Nice Guys, Hotel Rwanda) are set to produce this ten-picture deal. The AIP reinventions have a September production start earmarked. All ten titles are scheduled to shoot back-to-back. Cast and directors are expected to be announced shortly.

Former New Line and Fox executive Jeff Katz penned each script, and the ten individual stories will feed into one epic overarching storyline across all ten films.  Arkoff is the son of the late Samuel Z. Arkoff, co-founder of AIP, and has previously remade AIP titles for Showtime and HBO. This unique ten-picture project will deliver a complete reinvention of the quirkiest and most memorable movies in the famed American International Pictures portfolio, flipping them into an R-rated comic book style movie universe with multiple interconnecting characters.

The ten titles will include:

  • GIRLS IN PRISON
  • THE VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT
  • THE BRAIN EATERS
  • THE SHE-CREATURE
  • TEENAGE CAVE MAN
  • REFORM SCHOOL GIRL
  • THE UNDEAD
  • HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER
  • THE COOL AND THE CRAZY
  • DAY THE WORLD ENDED

American International Pictures (AIP) was founded in 1954 by James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff. After realizing the growth and influence of teenage movie-goers, Nicholson and Arkoff set off over the next 30 years inundating the teen market with action, comedy, and horror films. AIP grew very lucrative in the 1960s, mainly due to Roger Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.  Corman was soon dubbed “The King of the Cult Film” and “The Pope of Pop Cinema,” and to this day dozens of his films are still considered genuine cult classics and inspirations for many filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, and Peter Bogdanovich.

Production Kicks Off in Japan on The Forest

While The Sea of Trees, Gus Van Sant’s new film, is getting put through the ringer in Cannes, Jason Zada’s The Forest, with the same “Suicide Forest” setting, just kicked off production so we’ll have another chance to venture into those spooky woods shortly, hopefully with a better result.

The Forest, a supernatural thriller starring Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) and Taylor Kinney (pictured below; “The Vampire Diaries,” “Chicago Fire”) and directed by Jason Zada (writer/director of Take This Lollipop, co-writer of The Houses October Built) based on an original idea by David S. Goyer, commenced principal photography today in Tokyo, Japan, and in the environs surrounding the legendary Aokigahara forest at the base of Mt. Fuji.

Additionally, AI Film joins the Lava Bear Films project as a co-financier and co-producer with Focus Features, which is releasing the film nationwide on January 8, 2016.  Good Universe continues international sales on the project at this year’s Cannes market. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions previously acquired rights in multiple overseas territories including Australia, Spain, Eastern Europe, and all of Asia outside of Japan.

Sarah Cornwell and Nick Antosca wrote the script of The Forest, which is produced by Lava Bear Films and Goyer under his Phantom Four banner.  Len Blavatnik, Aviv Giladi, and Lawrence Bender serve as executive producers for AI Film. Tory Metzger, President of Lava Bear, is overseeing the production.

“We are proud to see this film going into production and fortunate to have AI Film join us on the film,” said Lava Bear head David Linde. “The team both in front of and behind the camera promises to deliver a well-crafted thriller designed to engage audiences all over the world.”

AI Film CEO and executive producer Aviv Giladi says, “We are thrilled to be working with David Linde’s Lava Bear and Focus Features on this film, who have brought on board a great cast and creative team which is already attracting the attention of international distribution.”

Synopsis:
In the Aokigahara forest at the base of Mt. Fuji, a young American woman goes in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared.  Despite everyone’s warnings to “stay on the path,” Sara enters the forest determined to discover the truth about her sister’s fate, only to be confronted by the angry and tormented souls of the dead who prey on anyone who wanders into the forest.

At a presentation in Cannes of Russian projects looking for co-production partners, Roskino announced details of several new films emerging from the Russian market, one of which – Ivan Tverdovsky’s Zoology – caught our attention.  We reached out for a few more details, and here’s what we’ve learned so far.

Zoology is the story of Natalia, a zoo administrator, and her struggle to overcome a “beastly” transformation.  Written and directed by Ivan Tverdovsky, the film is produced by Natalia Mokritskaya, Mila Rozanova, and Uliana Savelieva of New People Film Company.

Synopsis:
One day Natalia, a 40-year-old administrator at a local zoo, discovers to her great surprise that  she has grown a furry tail overnight…While trying to understand the essence of this unexpected miracle, Natalia will encounter and try to heal the many wounds of modern society, whilst attempting to fall in love and to find her own true self.

Tverdovsky says of the project: “Everyone has a tail. Its phantom presence in each instance manifests itself in a different manner. In the case of our protagonist, her tail will provide her with an opportunity to discover many things which she ignored in her usual life because of her surrounding circumstances and never-ending excuses.  With the magical appearance of a tail, Natalia’s life requires her to act. She has to choose whether she wants to feel the woman in herself and open up to the feelings that were hidden deep inside her. And she does make her choice.  Natalia is an indicator of our modern society. Unlike her, most of us are unable to overcome our instincts, our animal nature, and open ourselves up to pure emotions without prejudice.”

Not sure how horror-oriented this one will turn out to be, but we’ll keep you posted!

Grimm Season 4 Wrap-Up; What’s Ahead in Season 5

Last night’s shocker of an ending closed out “Grimm” Season 4 on a high, albeit sad, note; and we wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to Bitsie Tulloch’s portrayal of the polarizing Juliette over the past four years. Beware of spoilers if you’re not caught up!

We certainly thought her battle with Nick would continue into the next season but applaud the showrunners’ decision to wrap it up in the manner they did.  We have a few comments from co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf about Tulloch’s departure plus a tease of what to expect in Season 5.

Per THR, Greenwalt said the decision to kill off such a main character “was just the natural way she grew and developed in the course of the season, and it seemed like that was something inevitable that had to happen… It’s going to change the show’s course. I think it’s going to be even darker still in a way. You know, it’s not going to be the same ‘Grimm.’  It’s not the same dynamic anymore.”

What might that dynamic entail for the “Grimm” himself, Nick (David Giuntoli), who just lost both his mother and his girl friend and has a baby on the way with his mortal enemy? He’ll be dealing with some “pretty serious repercussions [of Juliette’s betrayal],” said Greenwalt, “and at the same time he’s got a lot on his plate. I mean, Adalind (Claire Coffee) is having that baby it sure looks like, and he’s going to have a lot to deal with.”

Might the two of them become a couple?  Greenwalt hinted, “Well, she’s changed a lot. He’s changed somewhat, and you never know.”

Kouf added, “We don’t know,” with Greenwalt confirming, “‘We don’t know’ is the truth on that one, but he does have some obligation there.”

Nick is facing the start of Season 5 in pretty dire straits.  Per Kouf, “He’s got nothing, this guy,” and Greenwalt added, “…It’s all been taken away from him.  The only thing he’s got is a fifth season.”

He concluded with some music to our ears:  “I think it will be even bigger, even darker, even weirder. You know, I think it’s where it naturally will go.”

As we say bon voyage to Bitsie, here’s another look at Nick and Juliette’s final lovers’ quarrel from last night’s Episode 4.22, “Cry Havoc.”

Another Magical Promo for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

This busy weekend sees the release of another promo for BBC America’s June 13th debut of “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.”  If your tastes run toward the dark and magical side of the fence, check it out along with several stills the network recently released.

The seven-part mini-series was adapted from Susanna Clarke’s bestselling novel by Peter Harness (“Wallander,” Is Anybody There?); it was directed by Toby Haynes.

Olivier Award-winning Bertie Carvel and Eddie Marsan take on the roles of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, respectively. Other cast members include Alice Englert, Marc Warren, Samuel West, and Charlotte Riley.

Synopsis:
1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon, and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation’s past. However, scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains — the reclusive and skillful Mr Norrell (Marsan). His displays of magic soon thrill the nation. In London, he raises the beautiful Lady Pole (Englert) from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French.

Soon the cautious and fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange (Carvel). While trying to secure his beloved Arabella’s (Riley) hand in marriage, he meets a vagabond, the magician of Threadneedle Street, Vinculus (Paul Kaye, “Game of Thrones”), who tells him he is destined to be a great magician. Young, handsome, and daring, Strange is the very antithesis of Norrell. A dangerous battle ensues between the two great men. Their obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts will cause more trouble than they can imagine.
