James Gunn’s The Belko Experiment Nabs First Star

0
0

We were delighted to learn back in March that James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) and Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, Wolf Creek 2) are working together on a horror film called The Belko Experiment, which Gunn wrote and McLean will direct. On tap today is the first casting news, so read on!

The Wrap reports that “The Newsroom” star John Gallagher, Jr., is set to star in the MGM Studios thriller, which is gearing up to start production in Bogota, Colombia. The young actor will play Mike Pelk, one of the leads.

Gunn has described the film as the story of an American company in South America that is “mysteriously sealed off at the beginning of a workday, and its employees are ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves. This starts an escalation of violence, where we discover the true nature of each and every [Belko] employee.”

I cannot tell you how passionate and excited I am about this project!” Gunn recently noted. “It’s a script I wrote a few years ago, for which I have always had a deep love. Believe it or not, it’s a film that first came to me in a dream, and I woke up and wrote the first draft in a two-week fugue state binge.

James Gunn will also produce, alongside Peter Safran.

Dubbed one of the best bug flicks of all time, writer/director Michael Peterson’s 2015 creature feature Insectula! is now available to own on DVD and VOD. The gory homage to Roger Corman, Amicus, Hammer, and Toho movies from the 50s, 60s, and 70s tells the story of a government agent who sets out to destroy a giant, blood-thirsty alien that is drawn to Earth due to the planet’s CO2 pollution. Judging from the insanity in the trailer, it doesn’t take very long for chaos to ensue.

If this sounds like something that needs to take up space in your exhaustive B-movie collection, swing by the official website to score a copy of the flick on DVD or VOD. To assist you in this momentous decision, have a look at the decidedly over-the-top Insectula! trailer below.

Kane Hodder Tells His Own Story in Unmasked Audiobook

0
0

The majority of horror fans are well versed in the cinema of Kane Hodder. The guy is almost synonymous with the genre, but chances are most folks aren’t overly familiar with the actor’s life before he took the world of horror by storm. Author Michael Aloisi joined forces with Hodder for the 2012 book Unmasked: The True Story of the World’s Most Prolific, Cinematic Killer, which gave fans an emotional, in-depth look at Kane’s rise to stardom. It’s a fascinating read.

However, reading Unmasked is one thing, but hearing the man himself tell his story is another. Producer Steve Gray worked closely with Hodder to produce an audiobook version of the tell-all, which is now available on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes. In addition to getting Kane to read the story, Gray wrangled writer/director Adam Green to read the foreward.

Here’s what Unmasked is all about.

Unmasked documents the unlikely true story of a boy who was taunted and beaten relentlessly by bullies throughout his childhood. Kane only escaped his tormentors when he moved to a tiny island in the South Pacific where he lived for all of his teen years. After living shirtless in a jungle for a while, he headed back to America where he fell in love with doing stunts-only to have his love burn him, literally. For the first time ever, Kane tells the true story of the horrific burn injury that nearly killed him at the start of his career. The entire heart-wrenching, inspirational story of his recovery, the emotional and physical damage it caused, his fight to break back into the industry that almost killed him, and his triumphant rise to become a film legend are told in Kane’s own powerful voice. Take a peek inside the head of the man behind the mask. Be inspired by his triumphant comeback and laugh at his on-set hijinks as you unmask the world’s most prolific, cinematic killer.

Check out the promotional artwork for Unmasked below.

iZombie: Recap of Episode 1.10 – Mr. Berserk; First Look at Episode 1.11 – Astroburger

0
0

“iZombie” Episode 1.10, “Mr. Berserk,” picks up directly where we left off last week with “Patriot Brains,” Liv’s boyfriend, Lowell, having just been shot in the face by the sinister Blaine. Liv’s in the interrogation room going through the typical drill. Things aren’t going well for her as her alibi seems a bit shaky. Not surprising given the fact that she was on a nearby rooftop preparing to kill Blaine with a sniper rifle.

Just as things begin to look real shaky, the police chief enters the room and tells Liv she’s free to go.

Major is busy dealing with problems of his own. He’s reeling from his encounter with Julien. He completely understands that something is very wrong in the city and suspects something of the… abnormal variety lies at the heart of the matter.

Ravi and Liv get together in the morgue, and Liv informs him she witnessed the murder. The two realize Blaine has the police force in his pocket as they get to work on the latest body to arrive in the facility. Interestingly enough, it’s the same reporter that was working with Major to bring exposure to the rash of missing teens in the area and the local police force’s apparent neglect for the situation.

We cut to a scene in the gym, where Julien is confronted by Clive while working out. Julien handles the situation with perfection – not so tough given the fact that he’s working out in a gym while supposedly having been shot three times the night prior – and Clive leaves with no more knowledge than he arrived with.

There’s a very emotional scene that soon follows as Liv and Ravi discuss Lowell’s death. Ravi wants to declare the death a suicide. That will eliminate potentially dangerous questions while enabling them to see to it that a cremation is performed. While Liv struggles with this confrontation. a vision hits her after having consumed the brains of the reporter. Her death wasn’t the result of a simple burglary as is initially believed. Whoever killed the woman was after something she had on her phone.

The investigation immediately gets into full swing. Liv and Clive are desperate with the hunt. They take to digging deep without hesitation, which drops them right into the interrogation cycle. Liv has a vision while conversing with the first person of interest. It doesn’t offer viewers much other than the insight that these people did indeed know the deceased.

Major believes he’s losing his mind because that’s what everyone around him is telling him. He’s preparing to take off, get out of dodge, and seek some help. Ravi sees that the man is in pain and confused, and he knows damn well that he should be informing him that what he’s seen isn’t just in his mind. But the timing doesn’t seem to be right, so Ravi keeps quiet for the moment.

Before we know it, one of those earlier links to the homicide surfaces, and we see a scorned lover willing to speak to the police. The meeting leads to fingers being pointed at a guy named Ryan Fisher, who organized a terrible prank that led to an unfortunate spiral for a seemingly innocent kid named Jason. It’s a twisty road to the suspects thus far, but it’s a road that could certainly deliver us to the actual killer.

izombie-mrberserk

Liv and Major spend some time together around the midway mark of the episode. Ravi’s already gone to Liv and let her know that Major has to be brought into the loop before he takes a dive into the deep end of the pool. And after having about 10 too many drinks to drive while at a bar (did I mention the reporter was a raging alcoholic?), Liv calls her ex to ask for a ride. He takes her home and tucks her in bed. The opening for Liv to tell Major the truth is there, but she holds back.

The deeper Clive digs, the more it looks like an energy drink known as Max Rager may be the cause of rages in consumers. There are multiple instances of extreme violence displayed by those who drink the beverage, and we’ve now got a solid link. It would, after all, be bad for business if the public learned there’s an energy drink out there that drives people to murder. What’s more interesting is that the deceased reporter had uncovered some evidence that points a clear finger at Max Rager.

It seems some execs are willing to kill to keep their business afloat. And Sebastian Meyer, who is the informant/connection that had stories to share about Max Rager, is afraid he may be next on the list. He buys Liv a drink (alcoholism being a side affects of consuming the reporter’s brains) and tells her he needs help and he’s ready to talk… and then we get a batch of those pesky commercials.

Vaughn Du Clark (guest star Steven Weber), the big man at Max Rager, is tabbed as the mastermind behind the assassination. Sebastian also informs her that there is a second source, still working for Max Rager that can verify the story. And of course, some savvy thinking from Liv has her unearthing another major lead, and before we know it we see that Vaughn’s own secretary is the one with evidence to share. But she’s not eager to put herself at risk just yet.

And then we get the episode’s big twist, as Sebastian again resurfaces. This time he doesn’t offer quite the same support. Rather, he offer’s Liv a punch in the face with a brass knuckle- enforced hand. The supposed connection has deceived the woman, and she could be in some serious trouble.

Sebastian takes Liv and the actual informant out on a small boat, where he’s preparing to dump both of their bodies overboard when Liv wakes. The informant is tossed, but Liv’s resilience pays off… just as her zombie nature does. She transforms and launches into a furious assault with a cement brick. Sebastian finds himself flying into the water, though he remains conscious. That doesn’t matter though, as Liv flips the boat around and chews the bastard up in the propeller.

The episode reaches its conclusion as we see Major being gifted some valuable information. After a meeting in the mental ward which he now calls home, a fellow resident speaks with him after a confessional session in which Major shares his experience. The man tells Major that he’s not crazy and that what he’s been seeing are zombies. Real. Life. Zombies.

The insanity continues next week!

“iZombie” Episode 1.11 – “Astroburger” (airs 5/26/15)
WHAT’S REAL – AND WHAT’S FANTASY? — When someone close to Major (Robert Buckley) dies of an apparent suicide, Liv (Rose McIver) consumes the brains, resulting in a mix of reality and paranoia. Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) questions Major and learns of a secret computer file that may contain important details in the investigation – and finding the killer.

David Anders and Rahul Kohli also star. Michael Fields directed the episode written by Kit Boss.

New Trailer for Dude Bro Party Massacre III Promises a Rager of a Horror Comedy

The hilariously gory Dude Bro Party Massacre III is having its world premiere on June 13th at the 2015 LA Film Festival, and a new trailer for the film has arrived.  It’ll be released this summer via DudeBroPartyMassacre3.com.

A satirical twist on the gory and sexually charged 1980’s slasher sub-genre, Dude Bro Party Massacre III is presented as the only surviving VHS copy of the reviled horror franchise’s third, and final, installment. The film follows Brent Chirino on his quest to investigate his twin brother’s murder.

Directed by the trio of Tomm Jacobsen, Michael Rousselet, and Jon Salmon, Dude Bro Party Massacre III stars Alec Owen, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Paul Prado, Kelsey Gunn, Joey Scoma, Mike James, Andrew W.K., Greg Sestero, Jimmy Wong, Brian Firenzi, Maria Del Carmen, and Patton Oswalt.

Synopsis:
In the wake of two back-to-back mass murders on Chico’s frat row, loner Brent Chirino must infiltrate the ranks of a popular fraternity to investigate his twin brother’s murder at the hands of the serial killer known as Motherface. As they are picked off one by one, Brent and his fellow Dude Bros must face the terrifying reality that their deadly foe, believed to have been killed (twice!), has returned from the grave (again!) and is hell-bent on the destruction of the Delta Bis.

Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence, The (2015)

0
0

humancent3Starring Dieter Laser, Laurence R. Harvey, Bree Olson, Eric Roberts, Robert LaSardo

Directed by Tom Six

In case you don’t know (or if you’ve effectively erased it from your memory), the human centipede is the creation of a mad doctor who surgically connected a row of people from mouth-to-tush in order to punish them. The first movie was pretty straightforward, while the second was tongue-in-cheek (so to speak). Part three takes it penal (to the penitentiary) as one whack warden creates the world’s longest and most disgusting chain-gang. The films are all written and helmed by Dutch director Tom Six.

The sick scene is set in the fictional George H. W. Bush Prison, presided over by the insane and inhuman Warden Bill Boss (Dieter Laser, who appeared in The Human Centipede). He’s a bald and brutal top-of-the-lungs yeller who’s basically the bastard hate-child of Colonel Kurtz and Gunnery Sergeant Hartman with just a touch of Dr. Frankenstein thrown in for bad measure. He lords over the prisoners with his sadistic iron fist, watching over them from his ivory tower office where he employs Daisy, his perpetually sexually-harassed secretary (Bree Olson), and a nebbish, overweight and overworked accountant dubbed Dwight (Laurence R. Harvey, who appeared in The Human Centipede 2). Director Tom Six makes a cameo as himself, and Eric Roberts and Robert LaSardo also appear (why, I don’t know… unless their salaries were off the charts or they were being blackmailed).

Aside from Laser walking around shouting the entire time (as if being loud is the only way to convey emotion) while just generally being a sleazy person, there’s zero to see here. The whole affair comes off as lazy and offensive, if for no other reason than to try to be offensive. I guess his yelling did at least keep me awake. Once things do start going all ass-to-mouth, The Human Centipede 3 dishes us the usual gross-out fest that is unfortunately too little too late.

It’s hard to stand out as a filmmaker these days, and to come up with a totally original idea is even more of a feat. Like it or not, bad publicity is better than none, or so they say. Surely Six subscribes to this view, as he’s milked this one-note phenomenon for all it’s worth, putting his every waking hour since 2009 into The Human Centipede franchise. Each installment has proven popular, so he’s not bothered to even try to tackle any other subject matter. I’m not sure if that says more about shock-merchant Six or the movie-watching public. Either way, it’s a bit sad for those of us who lean toward the higher brow – entertainment worthy of our love comes few and far between. And let’s just say: I didn’t love The Human Centipede 3: The Final Sequence.

Perhaps even more egregious than its inherently repulsive premise is the fact that The Human Centipede 3: The Final Sequence is cinematically constipated… nothing happens for a long, long time; and when it does, it’s just crap.

Melonie Diaz Next to Participate in The Belko Experiment

Shooting begins next month on The Belko Experiment, written by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) and directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, Wolf Creek 2), and the cast continues to fill out.

James Gunn took to his Facebook page to announce that Melonie Diaz has joined the cast. As per Gunn…

Have you guys seen Fruitvale Station? Well, I have, and I adored the movie. And one of the things I adored about it the most was the lead actress, Melonie Diaz. Her honest performance was exactly that kind of thing we were looking for for The Belko Experiment. So when she said she was interested in playing Dany Wilkins, one of the leads of the film, I jumped up and down and punched my desk and some trash cans and my assistant Simon with pure joy.

Dany is the new girl at Belko. It’s her first day working in the building, and she really couldn’t have chosen a worst first day, since this is the day the employees are all forced to either kill each other or be killed. (When I was nineteen I worked at Denny’s. On my first day the manager pressured me into trying a Moons Over My Hammy. That was pretty bad, but not as bad as this.)

Anyway, let’s all welcome aboard Melonie. She’ll start shooting with us in Bogota, Colombia in June, with myself, director Greg McLean, my fellow producer Peter Safran, and her fellow cast members John Gallagher, Jr. and Tony Goldwyn.

Stay tuned tomorrow for another cast announcement! PS Melonie, Simon forgives you for the broken nose.

Tell Us What Scares You and Win the Original Poltergeist on Blu-ray!

0

We’re just a few short hours away from the release of Gil Kenan’s Poltergeist, which is of course a remake of the same-named 1982 film. There’s never been a better time than right now to revisit Tobe Hooper’s original classic, and we want to give you the opportunity to do that in style.

In celebration of Poltergeist‘s hotly anticipated release this weekend, we got our hands on a copy of Warner Home Video’s 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition DigiBook Blu-ray of the original Poltergeist, and all you have to do to win it is answer a simple question: What scares you?!

The Poltergeist franchise’s demonic entity, revealed in the lackluster sequels to be a super creepy man by the name of Kane, is the sort of dude who preys on the fears of those he terrorizes, and as he shows in the original film, he knows exactly what scares his victims.

Young Robbie Freeling, for example, is terrified of clowns and sinister looking trees. But what scares YOU? Is it that pile of unpaid bills on your desk? Man-eating sharks? How about the ex-girlfriend who can’t seem to lose your number? Whatever it is that scares you most, we want to know.

So comment on this post with your biggest fear, and be sure to also include your e-mail address. At the start of next week we’ll pick a winner so get your entry in before midnight on Sunday night, May 24th. And if you’re going to see Poltergeist this weekend, we hope you enjoy it!

Special Features:

  • New Digital Transfer from Regenerated Picture Elements
  • Soundtrack Remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1
  • They Are Here: The Real World of Poltergeists Revealed
  • Documentary in Two Parts: “Science of the Spirits” and “Communing with the Dead”

Rebound (DVD)

ReboundStarring Ashley James, Mark Scheibmeir, Liz Bauer

Directed by Megan Freels

Distributed by Indie Rights; also Available on Google Play, Amazon, and globally on Vimeo On Demand

Any relationship, be it friendship or romantic, is built upon one thing… trust. Once you violate the faith someone has in you (or vice versa), the damage can be irreparable. Such is the case for Claire (James), a woman who has just found herself in a terrible situation. You see, Claire walked in on her significant other being ridden like a bucking bronco by another woman. Her life now shattered, she decides to pack up her stuff and move back to Chicago to be around her friends and family. There’s only one obstacle in her way… a cross-country drive.

Any horror fan worth his or her salt can attest to one thing: Driving across the country can lead to all manner of horrors. The roads are a dangerous place, but sometimes the smaller towns which litter them along the way can be even worse. After running into some car trouble, Claire finds herself surrounded by odd strangers at a dive bar. The kind of place in which if you’re not careful you could be slipped one hell of a concoction that will leave you waking up and not knowing where you are. See where this is all going? Of course you do, you beautifully savvy bastards!

What follows is Claire finding herself held captive by a man who’s more than a couple of cans short of a six-pack. Let me be clear… this could have very well turned into your typical “woman tied to a chair” torture porn event, but there’s one key component here that keeps it from heading that route: writer, producer, and director Megan Freels.

Make no bones about it; Rebound is a low budget affair, but rather than spending the scant $20k budget on ill-placed effects, Freels instead puts it all up on the screen with great locations and a troupe of unknown – and more importantly real looking – actors who are willing to take the material and under her direction run with it.

The result is a perfectly believable and frightening affair which delves not only into the most dangerous pitfalls a traveler can find herself caught in, but also the psyche of a very hurt, very human individual who needs to draw strength from some really dark places as a means to survive. There are some moments in which the acting seems a bit stilted, but overall Rebound is wonderfully written and beautifully shot. It should be on the must-see list for anyone who’s tired of the whole bloated Hollywood affairs that are shoved into and out of theatres with at times reckless abandon.

Keep a close eye on Megan Freels. Given the opportunity to work with a real budget, there’s no telling where she can take us. The future is definitely bright for her and deliciously dark for us.

Official Teen Wolf Season 5 Trailer Comes Howling In!

With “Teen Wolf” Season 5 kicking off via a two-part premiere on June 29th and 30th, the show’s official trailer has arrived.

As exec producer Jeff Davis revealed previously, “The tagline of this season that we use in the writers room is: ‘The rules have changed.’ The 20-episode season will be very much the world of the supernatural being turned upside down. The big fear of Season 5 [is]: Who’s going to go away? Much of the previous seasons were about Scott finding and building a pack; this is going to see him possibly losing it — possibly ending up on his own without his friends by his side, wondering how he’s going to face life without them.
