Welcome to Brakebills, a world where magic is real. “The Magicians” is a new series coming to Syfy in 2016, and we have a look at the show’s trailer right here.

Based upon Lev Grossman’s best-selling books, “The Magicians” stars Jason Ralph as Quentin Coldwater, a brilliant grad student who enrolls in Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real— and poses grave danger to humanity. Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, and Summer Bishil also star in this one-hour drama.

Groundswell Productions’ Michael London and Janice Williams executive produce. John McNamara and Sera Gamble, writers of the pilot, serve as executive producers.

Lev Grossman’s Magicians trilogy is an international sensation, published and widely praised in more than twenty countries. The epic conclusion to the series, The Magician’s Land, opened at #1 last summer on The New York Times Hardcover Best Seller’s list and was widely acclaimed as one of the best books of the year.

“Ever since The Magicians was published, I’ve wanted to see this story on screen,” said  Grossman. “The people, the school, the other worlds, the magic. I’m so thrilled that it’s finally happening, and I’m beyond thrilled that we found the right people to do it. Get ready; you’ve never seen anything like this.”

Shooting begins next month on The Belko Experiment, written by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) and directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, Wolf Creek 2). Read on for the latest casting news.

James Gunn took to his Facebook page to announce that Michael Rooker has joined the cast. As per Gunn…

We’ve done three movies, two reality shows, a video game and a web series together, been on a bromantic trip to Paris with just the two of us, and spent many nights as the last two maniacs at a party, so did you ever think there was any possibility that my pal Michael Rooker would not be cast in our horror/action/thriller ‘The Belko Experiment,’ especially when it’s been comprised of such overwhelming talent? Of course not.

Rooker plays Bud Melks, the head of maintenance in the Belko building. He’s not a racist thug like Merle in The Walking Dead, and he doesn’t have a flying arrow like Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy – in fact, he’s a pretty nice guy – so he’s ill-equipped to deal with the mysterious forces who start making all of the employees in Belko start killing each other unless they want to be killed themselves.

Rooker joins John Gallagher, Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Melonie Diaz, and John C. McGinley.

We’ve been anxiously awaiting news on the next film from Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead), which at one point was titled A Man in the Dark. Well, that moniker is gone, but a new actor has climbed on board.

THR reports that Prisoners actor Dylan Minnette has been cast in Alvarez’s horror thriller.

The Ghost House Pictures project is now untitled. It follows three teens who get away with perfectly planned home robberies as they set out for their final, and biggest, heist. But when they break into the home of a reclusive blind man, the tables are turned and they find themselves fighting for survival against a psychopath with secrets of his own.

Daniel Zovatto was previously cast in the project.

Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues wrote the script for the project, which is produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert for Ghost House Pictures. J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joe Drake, and Erin Westerman will executive produce. The film will shoot this summer in Budapest and Detroit.

Get to Know Mr Norrell: An Inside Look at Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Heading our way on BBC America on June 13th is the seven-part mini-series “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell,” adapted by Peter Harness from Susanna Clarke’s bestselling novel; and up now we have an introduction to the character of Mr Norrell, played by Eddie Marsan. Not only can he be ghastly, but you’ll feel great sympathy for him as well. Just our kind of guy!

Toby Haynes directs, and Bertie Carvel takes on the role of Jonathan Strange. Other cast members include Alice Englert, Marc Warren, Samuel West, and Charlotte Riley.

Synopsis:
1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon, and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation’s past. However, scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains — the reclusive and skillful Mr Norrell (Marsan). His displays of magic soon thrill the nation. In London, he raises the beautiful Lady Pole (Englert) from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French.

Soon the cautious and fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange (Carvel). While trying to secure his beloved Arabella’s (Riley) hand in marriage, he meets a vagabond, the magician of Threadneedle Street, Vinculus (Paul Kaye, “Game of Thrones”), who tells him he is destined to be a great magician. Young, handsome, and daring, Strange is the very antithesis of Norrell. A dangerous battle ensues between the two great men. Their obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts will cause more trouble than they can imagine.

Power Rangers Reboot Moved to January 2017

If you were hoping to catch the upcoming Power Rangers reboot in a theater near you next summer, then you’re in for some seriously scorching disappointment. According to the folks over at ComicBookMovie, the film probably won’t hit the big screen until 2017. What’s worse — the flick is saddled with a horrendous release date. January 13, 2017, to be exact.

Those who follow the ebb and flow of the box office know that the first few months of the year are essentially graveyards where studios dump lackluster or problematic motion pictures. Some can end up making money — Kevin Hart’s Ride Along and the first Paul Blart made tons of cash despite a January release date — but most of them are pretty much dead on arrival. However, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer doesn’t want fans to dwell on the negatives.

“We’re very excited and with Dean’s [Israelite] vision; we felt very comfortable looking for opportunistic dating. We really believe that great movies deliver whatever date they’re on… We’re picking whatever date we can win,” Feltheimer recently explained.

Fingers crossed that the Power Rangers reboot isn’t a complete letdown. And who knows? Maybe we’ll get something along the lines of director Joseph Kahn and producer Adi Shankar’s dark and gritty fan film Power Rangers: Zeo. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

Dave Made a Maze Set Pics; Cast List Revealed

When I’m not drowning my sorrows in horror, I tend to watch a lot of action/adventure movies from the 80s. And I mean a lot of 80s action/adventure movies. Needless to say, anything that claims to poke fun at this genre from that particular era almost always snags my undivided attention.

Such is the case of Dave Made a Maze, an upcoming adventure/horror/comedy from co-writer/director Bill Waterson, co-writer Steven Sear, and producers John Charles Meyer and John Chuldenko. Not only does the film sport a pretty amusing premise, it also features a very impressive cast that includes a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum and the bassist from OK Go.

Here’s what the flick is all about.

Dave (Nick Thune), an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation. Ignoring his warnings, Dave’s girlfriend, Annie (Meera Rohit Kumbhani), leads a band of oddball explorers on a rescue mission.

In addition to Thune and Kumbhani, Dave Made a Maze stars James Urbaniak, Stephanie Allynne, Adam Busch, Kirsten Vangsness, Scott Krinsky, Rick Overton, Frank Caeti, Tim Nordwind, John Hennigan, and Scott Narver. Filming is currently under way in Los Angeles.

10 Horror Films That Need a Remake

$
0
0

Wanna know something? Horror remakes are here to stay. I know, I know; not exactly earth-shattering news. The horror remake has been a mainstay in Hollywood for a long time now with no end in sight. I find it funny that people still get angry when a new horror remake is announced. That’s like getting angry because there’s a Monday in every week.

I’m not completely against horror remakes. There’s been more than a few that have been just as good as, if not better than, the original. There are also some horror films that – for many different reasons – should be remade.

Below is my list of horror films that need to be remade. Remaking the following films won’t just introduce them to a new audience, but remaking them may result in an overall stronger film.

The Hidden (1987)

Here’s one with a solid story: A cop and an FBI agent team up to hunt down a serial killer who isn’t exactly what he/she seems. The performances are great and the F/X are damn good for 1987, but The Hidden suffers from being hopelessly outdated. It just reeks of the 1980s, and this actually hurts the overall film. The killer goes into a record store; all the cops are using typewriters; the police station’s cutting edge computer lab consists of a few Commodore 64’s. All these elements really takes away from the experience of the movie. Plus, I think there could be more horror elements in this flick. This would be an easy one to update. The skeleton of the film is solid; it just needs a cosmetic facelift to update the technology and overall feel.

Remade The Hidden

Night of the Creeps (1986)

This classic needs a remake for the same reasons as The Hidden. It has an outdated 1980’s feel to it that really pulls you out of the movie. And let’s face it; Night of the Creeps could also benefit from some better F/X work.

Remade Night Creeps

C.H.U.D. (1984)

Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. With a title like that, how could this flick fail? Well, it does. The titular creatures barely get any screen time. C.H.U.D. is begging to be updated into a fantastic creature flick!!

Remade CHUD

Pumpkinhead (1988)

Stan Winston’s directorial debut is an overall fantastic movie. Winston gives us one of the scariest creatures in modern horror, but I feel like Pumpkinhead underachieves and we never really get to see him in all his demonic glory.

Remade Pumpkinhead

Phantasm (1979)

There’s no doubt that this one has a lot going for it. It’s got a fantastic horror villain (The Tall Man), silver spheres that are flying Cuisinarts, and it has one of the creepiest atmospheres and tones around. But Phantasm suffers from a dated 1970s feel and from a wonky plot. Get someone in there who could make a more linear storyline (the mythology in this film is terrific), and you’ve got yourself a winner!

Remade Phantasm

The Stuff (1985)

Another classic that suffers from the era in which it is made. The Stuff is a yogurt-like substance that is actually a living thing that eats people from the inside out. The film pokes fun at dieting fads, consumerism, and advertising. With today’s controversy of GMOs, what better time is there for a remake of The Stuff?

Remade Stuff

The Man in the Shadows Explores the Terrifying World of Sleep Paralysis

$

For those who have experienced it, sleep paralysis is no laughing matter. The sheer, unadulterated terror that engulfs you is indescribable and pales in comparison to any horror movie in existence. However, writer Adam Tomlinson and director Joshua Fraiman will attempt to channel that unrelenting fear in their upcoming horror/thriller The Man in the Shadows.

Not to be confused with the documentary The Nightmare, the flick tells the story of one woman’s struggle with sleep paralysis. During these horrifying experiences, she sees a mysterious man in a hat. Although her husband believes this is nothing more than a hallucination brought on by her condition, she soon learns that the man in the hat is possibly all too real.

The official synopsis puts a finer point on the story.

Rachel Darwin (Sarah Louise Jurgens, “Covert Affairs”) is pregnant, shackled, giving birth to something terrible, attended to by a dark man in a brimmed hat. She struggles to wake, opens her eyes and he is there. The next day she finds out she’s not alone, many others see that Hat Man too. Her husband, Scott (Nick Baillie, “The Dead Zone”), believes her but thinks there is a scientific explanation. Sleep paralysis. Electromagnetically induced hallucinations. Rachel speaks of the Hat Man at group therapy. The addicts and loners reject her, except for William (“Scare Tactics’” Adam Tomlinson, also making his debut as Producer). He believes her more than she believes herself – he believes in multidimensional beings, shadows that feed upon human souls.

Scott’s frustration builds as Rachel’s sanity slips. She slips into an intoxicated dream confronted by horrors of her past. The nightmares are getting worse. It becomes harder to know what is real and what is not, and that includes the Hat Man.

If you’re interested in checking out The Man in the Shadows and are attending the Dances with Films Festival in Los Angeles next month, be sure to swing by and catch the film on the big screen. The flick’s showing is presently scheduled for June 1.

Gerald Kargl’s Angst Set to Terrorize Theaters Ahead of Home Video Release

If you’re into horror movies about depraved, mentally unstable serial killers, then director Gerald Kargl’s 1983 genre flick Angst (also known as Schizophrenia) is right up your demented alley. Locating a legitimate copy of the movie on home video in the US is next to impossible, although the boys and girls at Cult Epics are hoping to change that later this summer.

Ahead of the film’s Stateside debut on DVD and Blu-ray, Angst will thoroughly terrorize the countryside with several badass theatrical screenings. What’s more, cinematographer Zbigniew Rybcynski will be in attendance at the screenings scheduled for Los Angeles. That’s definitely something horror fans should investigate if they’re in the area.

Need a quick plot description? Here you go.

A man is released from prison after serving ten years for murdering an elderly woman. He quickly begins to feel the compulsion to kill again. After failing to murder a cab driver, he flees and discovers a secluded rural home, where a young woman lives with her sick mother and disabled brother. He then begins to take out his sadistic pleasures on them, attempting to hold them hostage, while thinking of his troubled childhood with his abusive mother and grandmother…

For a full list of theaters screening Angst this summer, swing by Shock Till You Drop. The film is presently slated to hit home video on August 18. Have a look at the trailer for Angst below.

Burying the Ex (2015)

Burying the ExStarring Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, Alexandra Daddario

Directed by Joe Dante

Burying the Ex is a zom-rom-com – it is what it is so don’t look any deeper than the surface, and you will be just fine. Deftly directed by Joe Dante, based on a cute if clunky screenplay by Alan Trezza (which grew from his short film of the same name), this B-grade flick focuses on the love triangle among Max (Yelchin), his new lady, Olivia (Daddario), and his dead girlfriend, Evelyn (Greene).

Max is a nerd who works in a little shop of horrors that sells all kinds of spooky novelties and horror film memorabilia. He lives and breathes cinematic vampires, werewolves, and zombies.

His hot but overbearing live-in girlfriend, Evelyn, is his polar opposite: She’s a vegan blogger (the fact she’s a blogger is driven home repeatedly) who hates everything Max loves. But did I mention she’s really, really hot?

Evelyn turns cold once Max meets kindred spirit Olivia… and colder still when she dies and is buried six feet under. Still, that doesn’t stop her from loving Max and wanting to put an end to his budding relationship with Olivia. In the mix is Max’s horny, harebrained half-brother, Travis (Oliver Cooper). As Travis tries – and fails – to help Max sort out his sordid love life, the comedy cranks up to a screwball 10.

A series of silly events follows, mainly involving Max trying to keep Evelyn and Olivia from finding out about the other. Sometimes the repartee is clever, and sometimes it’s clichéd. But for true fans of the genre, the clichés are fun, and one can see Dante’s stamp as the director. (For instance, there’s a Dick Miller cameo.) Burying the Ex feels like a cross between Seth Grahame-Smith’s book How To Survive a Horror Movie and an episode of “Reaper.”

Burying the Ex is a fun little romp, something you can have on in the background while doing your household chores… or blogging… and you won’t miss a thing. It’s easy to like and quick to flee the memory.

After all of the behind-the-scenes drama involving the upcoming season of “Twin Peaks,” fans could certainly use some good news. Here you go: Not only has David Lynch worked out his problems with the folks at Showtime, the acclaimed filmmaker will reportedly direct a whopping 18 episodes of the next installment of the cult favorite. That’s definitely a cause for celebration.

If that’s not enough to get you insanely excited for the new episodes, then you should seriously consider this: According to Welcome to Twin Peaks, frequent Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti will compose new music for Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” reboot.

Somewhere, the dwarf in the red suit is dancing a hypnotic jig.

Finally, to ensure that the new episodes feature the same unnerving atmosphere as the original run, Lynch and company will shoot the forthcoming season in North Bend and Snoqualmie, Washington. This includes transforming Twede’s Cafe into the Double R Diner once again.

The new episodes of “Twin Peaks,” which begin shooting this September, should arrive on Showtime next year. And as Agent Dale Cooper once said, “I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.”

CineQuest always brings some cool “Supernatural”-themed items to the San Diego Comic-Con, and this year is no exception. They’ve announced their first two 2015 SDCC exclusives that are now available for pre-order: a “Swan Song” Variant Metallicar plus their annual “Road Trip to San Diego” T-shirt.

A limited number of each exclusive is being made available to non-attendees and attendees for a short period of time. After that, they will only be available in limited quantities each day at the CineQuest.com Booth #4539 during the convention.  ATTENDEE PRE-ORDER INFO: If you are attending, order your item for pickup at Booth #4539 during regular show hours July 9-12 (they will NOT be filling pre-orders during Preview Night).

The “Swan Song” variant Metallicar comes complete with a replica of Sam Winchester’s toy Army man. This licensed four-door 1967 Chevy Impala SS 1:24 scale die-cast car is being done in association with GreenLight Toys and will premiere July 9-12 at San Diego Comic-Con International.

Product Description:
This licensed die-cast car is a replica of the Impala as it appeared on the Rainbow Motors lot, where it was purchased by John Winchester. It features Rainbow Motors dealer plates, the price and year as marked on the windshield in paint, and all the dust it gathered while sitting on the used car lot.

“The Impala, of course, has all the things other cars have… and a few things they don’t. But none of that stuff’s important. This is the stuff that’s important: The Army man that Sam crammed in the ashtray – it’s still stuck there. The Legos that Dean shoved into the vents – to this day heat comes on, and they can hear ’em rattle. These are the things that make the car theirs – really theirs. Even when Dean rebuilt her from the ground up, he made sure all these little things stayed ’cause it’s the blemishes that make her beautiful.” – Chuck Shurley, #5.22 “Swan Song”

That quote appears on the back of the blister-package that includes the variant 1967 four-door Impala Super Sport and a replica of Sam’s Army man. Limited to 2,500 pieces, this variant is only available through CineQuest.com at San Diego Comic-Con 2015. There were many horror fans in attendance as well as the cast and the dedicated filmmakers who saw this film through from its wobbly beginning to its strong finish.

The story is pure, biting satire: Disgusted with sensationalist culture, a killer abducts empty-headed reality TV stars and posts the captives being tortured live online, while the tabloid media and the bloodthirsty public debate whether or not society is better off without them. Filmed and edited in a lively, imaginative way, we get to see “tweets” pop up online, watch 7-second Vine-like videos play out, and hear the Slasher’s running commentary (given voice by Any Dick). No one is off-limits. In addition to reality stars, the city’s corrupt politicians (Eric Roberts plays the mayor) and drug-dealing dregs (Danny Trejo and Dave Bautista) are also taken to task.

Since L.A. Slasher is made by fans of the horror genre, there had to be a few Scream Queens thrown into the mix. One of them is played to perfection by Carlee Baker, who has known producer Sean Decker for years. “We were both deeply involved in the Bowling for Boobies cancer awareness event for years,” Baker said, “but really, he’s been my best friend for years. I was so happy to help out with this film.”

While [spoiler alert] Baker’s character is one of the lucky few who escape the L.A. Slasher’s machete of justice, she says her scene, which was shot on location in the Hollywood Hills on the grounds of a magnificent mansion, “was a lot of fun.”

There were no Dick encounters, though. “Andy wasn’t on set,” Baker explained. “He did his voiceover later,” while another actor did the actual stalking and stabbing.

One of the filmmakers, Abigail Wright, put on several hats as L.A. Slasher was in development. She plays the plum role of the investigative reporter who covers the crime spree, but she’s also a producer and one of the writers.

“Martin Owen is an incredible writer,” Wright says of the film’s director.  “I just gave input on my character and wrote a few of the scenes. But it really was a group collaboration. Martin wrote the original screenplay, and I came in later on the project. The story was quite complex to begin with, so we [Owen, Decker, Elizabeth Morris, and herself] simplified it and changed some things around. A lot of that was done in the editing.”

Sean Decker was on hand to do… well, just about everything. Not only is he a producer, writer, and all-around cheerleader on this unique film, he also organized the red carpet event and, with his parents and son also in attendance, might as well have been spinning plates while walking barefoot on a tightrope. Luckily, we caught up with him for a few words!

Dread Central: How did you get involved with L.A. Slasher?

Sean Decker: Geno Tazioli called me one night in late 2010 and said, ‘There’s this British producer in town and he wants to shoot a sizzle reel for a slasher movie, and your name came up in conversation.’ For some reason, everybody thinks I know everything about slasher movies, which I don’t. But I do love that sub-genre. It’s my favorite. So, I went and met the producer the next morning. He had already assembled a thrown-together crew at that point and some actresses, and we were up and shooting at Linda Vista Hospital in a matter of hours. He didn’t really have much of a script there, more ‘moments’ really, but we shot it. And then the project grew out of that. That producer’s name was Tim Burke. Martin Owen, who is our director, then came on, and that’s how the film developed. It was a very challenging production, but our director, Martin, is just great. He made a very visual and stylish film.

DC: How much writing did you do on the screenplay?

SD: I kind of steered them in certain directions. As far as my actual writing, you’ll see it in any of the scenes that Barbara [Nedeljakova] or Carlee [Baker] or any of the cameo scream queens are involved in. A lot of the film actually was shot in sort of an improvisational way. Martin would often set up the beats of a scene and let the actors play and explore, and I think his approach really gives the film the kinetic energy it has.

DC: So, where does Andy Dick fit in? I know he’s the voice of the Slasher, but was that planned right from the start?

SD: No. The Slasher didn’t speak initially. As we moved forward into post production, though, imbuing the character with a narrative voice seemed appropriate. Given the tone of the project, and the fact that it lambasts the public’s fascination with pop culture, to have Andy do (the voiceover) seemed fitting.

DC: With “slasher” in the title, is it very gory?

SD: No. I don’t feel that it is. There are a couple of moments of gore, but we were really just trying to make a satire for all intents and purposes. We wanted to stay away from the torture-porn aspects. I would compare it to God Bless America meets Drive, to an extent. Within tone and in the visual sense, that’s kind of the approach. It’s got a crazy ‘80s soundtrack, too. We really went all out when we were putting that together. We have ABC’s “The Look of Love” in it, for instance, and “Scream Queens” and “American Horror Story’s” Mac Quayle delivered an amazing score.

DC: What’s the upshot?

SD: The film is intended to be fun, ultimately. It’s been kind of a hard thing to talk about before the release because people hear “L.A. Slasher,” and they immediately assume it’s going to be like Elijah Wood’s Maniac. I love that movie, but that is not our movie. L.A. Slasher itself is intended to be a satirical take on what many people I think feel is the cultural erosion of culture – reality TV.

L.A. Slasher premiered during the 2015 IFS (Independent Filmmakers Showcase) Film Festival at Laemmle’s Music Hall in Los Angeles. Check out our gallery of red carpet photos by Aaron Kai below.

L.A. Slasher‘s North American theatrical release starts June 12th in select AMC theaters. The film has a brand new website as well; be sure to visit LASlasherMovie.com.

With an all-star cast that includes Mischa Barton, Dave Bautista, Danny Trejo, Drake Bell, Eric Roberts, Brooke Hogan, Abigail Wright, Elizabeth Morris, Marisa Lauren, Tim Burke, and Andy Dick (in his comeback vehicle), L.A. Slasher is a social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous.

Exploring why it has become acceptable to become an influential star based on no merit or talent, the story follows the titular Slasher character as he systematically abducts these “stars,” much to the joy of the online public, who view his exploits via social media and who subsequently and enthusiastically support his mantra of “Death to Reality TV.”

“How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year.
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.”
