Brian Trenchard-Smith directs. Ving Rhames and Luke Goss star.

Before the Frankenstein experiment can be completed, he fights his way free. The chase is on, and Marcus ends up in hiding on an island surrounded by vicious sharks. A beautiful academic studying the sharks helps him fight.

Lance Henriksen and Robert John Burke Coming Into Being

0
0

If you’re casting a horror movie, you can’t go wrong bringing Lance Henriksen into your project. And the people behind the upcoming film Being knew this. To raise the stakes, they also brought in Robert John Burke…he was a RoboCop for crying out loud!

Read on for more about Being.

Doug C. Williams, the writer/director of Being, is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the film. Along with Henriksen and Burke (whom, in addition to being the cop in RoboCop 3, you may recognize as the unfortunate disappearing victim in Stephen King’s Thinner) in the cast are Brian Foyster, Christian Davies, and Jason Iannacone A sci-fi/horror nightmare, Being promises to tickle the fancy of old school horror fans as well as appease all audiences who simply love being unsettled.

“The modern world is getting very comfortable with fear and isolation… and if isolation becomes comforting to you, there’s something very wrong with that,” said Henriksen. “Fear in a spiritual sense is becoming an addiction, and I’m very happy to be a part of this crew; believe me, they’re kicking butt!”

For all those interested in seeing Lance Henriksen killing it in a brand new sci-fi/horror film, check out the Being Kickstarter campaign, which is offering some great perks for supporting a unique new film.

You can also check out the happenings at the official Being website. For up-to-the-minute info, “like” Being on Facebook and follow Being on Twitter (@beingmovie).

From the Press Release:
Being is an edgy and one-of-a-kind film that transcends the typical horror genre. The story provokes an unnerving reflection of human behavior and tragic violence that occurs when someone, or something, threatens a person’s beliefs. Being is designed to leave you on the edge of your seat and shake the convictions of what you believe in.

Being already has several days of shooting in the can from locations in Norwalk, CT, and the Catskills in upstate New York, where paranormal activity and UFO sightings are frequently reported. Production is targeted to resume in August 2015 after the completion of a Kickstarter campaign, and the production team is encouraging involvement from fans of the horror/sci-fi genre.

“When this film becomes a reality, it will be in large part because of Kickstarter fans,” said director Doug C. Williams. “The opportunity to endorse and be a part of the artistic film process can be one of the most rewarding and exhilarating experiences a person can have in their lifetime. The pride of joining with extremely talented artists to develop cinematic works of art is immeasurable. We have taken advantage of every resource and contributing factor available to us, which has allowed us to already shoot some amazing footage for the film and to release our promotional teaser.”

Kickstarter contributors are rewarded with memorabilia from the film, and participation levels go from $5 all the way up to $10,000 with the reward of being named as an executive producer on the film.

Being Synopsis:
The story all takes place over one night on a farmhouse in a small town in the mountains. A mysterious, bright burst of light explodes from inside the barn, knocking out the power. The drunken gathering going on in the main house comes to an abrupt halt. There is a creature they will discover in the barn. Something they do not understand. And as always, when the beliefs of the weak and fearful are threatened, they turn on each other.

Insidious Chapter 3 (2015)

0

Insidious Chapter 3Starring Lin Shaye, Stefanie Scott, Dermot Mulroney

Directed by Leigh Whannell

Unto The Further once more! (Or maybe more than once, if Insidious Chapter 3 is a box office hit.) In this installment of the popular mainstream horror movie franchise, we learn even more about the demonic domain dubbed “The Further,” and we also see how spiritual psychic medium Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) got her ghostly groove back.

It’s a prequel, set a few years before the first film. Elise is retired. Parapsychologists Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Specs (Leigh Whannell, who also directs) are just a couple of Joe Shmoes with a rinky-dink internet show. The Bride in Black is just getting started. The Lambert Family has yet to reach out.

Insidious Chapter 3 sets its sights on 17-year-old Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), a smart and sweet aspiring actress whose mother has recently passed away. This leaves newly-minted widower Sean (Dermot Mulroney) alone in raising Quinn and young son Alex (Tate Berney) as best he can while he juggles a job and his own grief. Shortly after Quinn visits Elise to see if the seer can contact her mother, all hell breaks loose.

SPOILER ALERT

I love Shaye in this role and she is an interesting character, but I must say: Elise is an evil spirit magnet! And she’s not so good at bad-guy banishment – lots more people get hurt and hounded after she comes onto the scene, and in Chapter 2 she even gets herself killed. Not a great track record.

END SPOILER ALERT

This is the first installment of the franchise not directed by James Wan (he was busy doing a little thing called Furious 7), but he’s still very much in evidence. Not only is there a wink-n-nod cameo appearance, but it’s obvious he and Whannell have been working together for so long that they both speak the same cinematic language fluently. (The partnership began in 2003 with the Saw short and hit it big a year later with the feature.)

The signature suspense and jump scares are there, and the CGI-enhanced ghosts are as ghoulish as can be. The story is satisfying, and the actors are well-cast. It’s a nice mix of the tried and true with the trio of Elise, Tucker, and Specs and the new with the Brenners.

My only real contention is that for those of us who’ve seen the first two movies, Insidious Chapter 3 is rather heavy-handed when it comes to alluding to what’s going to happen in the years to come (though in this time frame they haven’t happened yet). We get it! No need to hammer the point home again and again, and for those who haven’t seen the other two movies and who don’t get it, it’s a waste of the characters’ breaths.

Insidious Chapter 3 is more of the same, which should be comforting to fans. It also manages to stand alone nicely for newbies. Basically, it covers all the bases and is scary and suspenseful in the process.

What Are these Sounds Heard Around the World? – The Gasp Menagerie

0
0

I’ve looked into this one before, but the Daily Mail has done a wonderful job of compiling some of the evidence I’ve seen before and adding some newer reports.

What’s happening is simple: For years now, people around the world have heard and even recorded very strange noises coming from thin air. The sounds aren’t always identical, but they’re similar, and given the broad dispersal of occurrences across the planet, that makes it a suitable entry in the Gasp Menagerie.

The first time I ran across this story was a YouTube video of the Ukraine incident recorded from an apartment building. I didn’t introduce it here simply because, on its own, it might be odd, but it’s hardly strong evidence of something truly weird.

The compilation video from the Daily Mail story does a good job putting all the evidence in one place. When presented that way, it paints a much better picture of the phenomenon.

Considering these videos were posted over several years by people in many countries, it’s clear this is not viral marketing and is unlikely to be hoaxery.

So we’re left with the simple question: What the hell is it? We’ve seen previous extremely loud sounds, such as the sub-Pacific “bloop,” but this isn’t a single occurrence. Is it geophysical? Meteorological? Alien? Secret government technology? Paranormal?

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in the Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. As always, I can be found at mrdark@dreadcentral.com. Now get out there, find some weird, and let’s get this party started.

Last Halloween, The (Short)

The Last HalloweenStarring Ron Basch, Emily Alatalo, Julian Richings

Directed by Marc Roussel

Some kids will literally walk through the fires of hell on Halloween night for that ultimate score – be it candy, or gifts…or something a little more permanently satisfying. Director Marc Roussel takes one of the most popular holidays of the year, and drops it dead in the middle of a cataclysmic event, all under the 11-minute mark – talk about compression!

In The Last Halloween, four seemingly innocent young children, all under the guises of Halloween costumes, have set out on the yearly pilgrimage to procure as many goodies door-to-door as “humanly” possible, however these streets are darker than usual, and the streets are littered with stillness. The children encounter a multitude of interesting (and ultimately frightening) characters along their path, and Roussel gives the audience something to generally be scared of – believe me when I tell you, this one WON’T end that way you might think it will. The visuals are impressive to say the least, with the look and feel of a big-budget production, and while the performances are brief, the length that the actors go to convey their respective roles’ believability is affecting to many degrees.

The Last Halloween isn’t meant to be watched as a feel-good tale revolving around All Hallows Eve – this short is strong, disheartening, and a welcome sight for those who love their holiday tales laced with terror – great stuff all around.

Clinton Road has been haunted for the past 50 years, and this is what Alex, Jillian, Amber, Jamie, Stacy, and Mark will soon find out.

The sadness of not having a beach near soon disappears as they all rush outside to see the lake. They prepare to have drunken festivities, but that’s when the horror begins. One by one they all disappear. Who will be the first? Who will be the last? Will anyone survive?

Hospital 2, The (2015)

0

The Hospital 2Starring Jim O’Rear, Daniel Emery Taylor, Betsy Rue

Directed by Jim O’Rear, Daniel Emery Taylor

Hot on the heels of his ultra-sleazy celluloid presentation, The Hospital, actor/director Jim O’Rear returns to the scene of many crimes in you guessed it…The Hospital 2. Oddly enough, despite the title, St. Leopold’s hospital (the first film’s locale), doesn’t play a role here but the viewer is front row for some extremely unsettling images throughout.

After the heinous events of the first film, Alan (O’Rear at his slimy best), and his sadistic cohort Stanley (Taylor) return to dole out some more graphic punishment to victims abound, and aided by his incestuous daughter, Samantha (the cute-as-a-button Megan Emerick), Alan sets up his demented internet viewing platform at a women’s shelter (how they never knew what went on was beside me). It doesn’t take very long before the perverse castigations commence – however, Stanley isn’t satiated by such activities, as his memory won’t let him forget the two that got away – survivors Beth (Constance Medrano) and Skye (Rue). The ladies recollections plague them, and they are somewhat unaware that they are being stalked once again by the portly savage.

As this movie trudges along, we see just how twisted the directorial doublet of O’Rear and Taylor’s minds’ work – the imagery of the torturous exercises are cheesy at best, but somehow come off as wince-worthy in spots – we see females toes’ being sucked, then bitten off, faces are bludgeoned to pieces, genitalia are mutilated, set on fire, and generally abused like a cheap rental car while on vacation.

Cameos are in place as well, with scream-queen deluxe Debbie Rochon and John Dugan filling roles to appease the horror fanatics, and if I may offer this on a side note: Debbie Rochon has STILL got it, both in performance and display…if you know what I’m tossing at you. Aside from the aforementioned notable performances, the remainder of the acting is…how do I put this gently? Let’s go with synthetic, and that’s being kind – but if you’re checking out an O’Rear feature for a family-friendly storyline and Oscar-winning acting, then maybe I should suggest taking off your Stevie Wonder shades and reading the fine print – this is debasement in its purest form, and oddly enough it was entertaining to watch – there, someone PLEASE lock me up and swallow the key.

Overall, The Hospital 2, while not exactly topographically correct, will mollify those who weren’t overly enthused with the conclusion of the first film, and will head back for seconds with this offering that’s overloaded with blood, guts, and extra cheese – take a big ol’ bite, for it is indeed a guilty pleasure.

3-Headed Shark Attack Trailer Makes Chum Out of Danny Trejo, Rob Van Dam, and Karrueche Tran

Have we reached peak sharkness yet? The Asylum hopes not because in addition to a third Sharknado and a fourth Mega Shark, they’re also spawning a second 2-Headed Shark Attack, now boasting three heads – a 3-Headed Shark Attack.

Synopsis:
The world’s greatest killing machine is three times as deadly when a mutated shark threatens a cruise ship. As the shark eats its way from one end of the ship to the next, the passengers fight the deadly predator using anything they can find.

Who can possibly stand up to take on the challenge of this mutant shark’s triple chomping action? How about previous Sharknado chum Jaason Simmons, World Wrestling Entertainment’s whole f’n show Rob Van Dam, Karrueche Tran of the web series “The Bay,” and Danny Trejo in what may be just an extended cameo or an actual co-starring role. From the looks of the trailer, Trejo is getting the Sam Jackson Deep Blue Sea treatment in this one.
Christopher Olen Ray directs, just as he did its two-headed predecessor.

3-Headed Shark Attack begins chomping its way through bikini babes and badass Mexicans on disc and VOD July 11th. It will also air on Syfy later that month as part of its 2015 “Sharknado Week.”

Extra points to this one for the tagline: “More heads. More deads.

As someone who considers the comma his mortal enemy, I can concur with The Asylum’s “up yours, grammar” attitude.

Village of the Damned Hit with Demonic Illness in The Gasp Menagerie

0

This one has about every aspect of what we cover here at the Gasp Menagerie. Potential paranormal events, conspiracy theories, nature gone amok… it’s all here.

According to the Daily Mail the small village of Kalachi in Kazakhstan has been plagued with a “sleeping sickness” that has some nasty side effects.

It strikes victims of all ages and genders, beginning with a coma-like sleep that lasts 12 hours to several days. This is bad enough, but it’s what happens when they wake that has everyone alarmed.

Upon waking, citizens are reporting bizarre behavior similar to madness or demonic possession. Men are said to sometimes wake craving sex, insatiable. Some come out of the sickness abusive and ranting, calling their caretakers horrible names or, in one case, giving Nazi salutes and shouting “Heil Hitler!

Children report seeing monsters or even their parents transforming, growing extra eyes or elephant trunks. Other patients seem to go briefly insane, believing they’ve become livestock or being compelled to play pranks on their doctors.

Some of the less bizarre symptoms include headaches, lethargy, and bladder incontinence.

Here’s where it gets weird.

Citizens aren’t blaming this on the paranormal. Rather, they seem to be blaming it on a new virus that has erupted… or on Moscow. Yes, the theory is that because the village is in the way of a new gold mine that Russian interests wish to exploit, the town has been poisoned by a chemical or biological agent to drive them away. The town is down to 381 people so that seems to be working.

So, what is causing this so-called “Village of the Damned” to experience wholesale madness? Is it demons of the past? Or rather, demons of the present, in the form of a government previously known to engage in poisoning to get their way? Worse yet, is this a new disease that could spread and infect the world?

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in the Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. Find Out Who’s There in Short Film Knock Knock

We always say that tension is what makes a great horror movie. Blood, guts, and gratuitous nudity are great, but it’s tension that makes a horror film stick with you. Filmmaker Kyle Kelley generates some nice tension in under three minutes in his short Knock Knock.

Starring Lauren Douglas and Greg Lane, Knock Knock again proves why it’s an insanely bad idea to go into the basement when you’re home alone and creeped out. Please, people, in the future, if you get freaked, just lock the basement door until someone comes along that can escort you down there to investigate. Solo trips into the cellar are never a good idea. And actually, that statement is worth repeating. Solo trips into the cellar are never a good idea.

The creator and director of Knock Knock, Kyle Kelley, was gracious enough to share his movie with the Dread Central readership and hopes you all enjoy this three-minute nightmare. Hit the comments section and let us know what you think!

Bad Guy #2 (Short)

0

Bad Guy #2Starring Will Elliott, Sam Eidson, David Maldonado

Directed by Chris McInroy

Bucking for that big promotion at work takes on an entirely whole new meaning in Chris McInroy’s gore-soaked short, Bad Guy #2, and the question lingers: should you speak up in hopes of moving up the personnel ladder, or is it easier to just hang back, and wait for the bodies to start dropping?

When a newbie (Elliott) introduced into the world of underground crime takes his place as the number #4 guy…or is it #3? – anyway, his rise to the ranks of higher importance weighs heavily upon the mistakes of the crew he runs with: when one man screws up, the boss (Maldonado) makes a very messy example of him…and NEXT! As the numbers of unlucky stiffs pile up, our lead man slowly ascends the ladder, all the while confiding in his girlfriend about his worries – what if he’s the next to get the axe (literally)?

As the short trucks along, make sure you’ve got your splash-guard tightly strung around your neck, as there is a better than normal chance that you’ll be wearing some entrails after checking this one out – the blood runs freely, and the intestines fly like party decorations. Bottom line, with a more than ample supply of gore, and a modicum of humor to break up the crimson barrage, this quickie will entertain plenty, but PLEASE, don’t use this as a guide on how to motivate your co-workers.

Given an artifact – a spiritual medallion said to awaken the deceased – by a dead friend’s brother, Drew Studdard (McCrary), Angela cannot resist temptation and invokes the magic of the mysterious gift to summon her first husband (Tilford). The reunion with her past love is emotional but turns deadly very quickly as his spirit begins to strengthen and make life-threatening demands, including turning Kendra (Storm Reid, Twelve Years a Slave), one of their young daughters, against Wayne. With the help of Kiki (Diandra Lyle, Urban Love Story), a homeless woman Angela hired to run her bar’s kitchen, they plot to send TJ back to the grave.
