The Editor Blu-ray/DVD Release Details:
A loving tribute to the gory and gruesome erotic horror of classic Italian giallo cinema, The Editor spins the twisted tale of a once-prolific film editor who becomes the prime suspect in a series of murders haunting a seedy 1970s film studio.

Directed and produced by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, this stylish horror comedy became a festival darling after its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, going on to earn audience and critical acclaim at festivals across North America including the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Fantasia Film Festival.

Making its Blu-ray and DVD debut on September 8, 2015, from Scream Factory, The Editor comes loaded with bonus features, including an audio commentary with Adam Brooks, Connor Sweeney, and Matt Kennedy; a brand new “Making Movies Used to Be Fun” documentary; deleted scenes; music and poster featurettes; and more! Fans who pre-order their copy from ShoutFactory.com will also receive a free collectible poster.

The Editor stars Paz de la Huerta (“Boardwalk Empire”), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy (Father’s Day), Conor Sweeney (ABCs of Death 2), Tristan Risk (Dark Continents), and Udo Kier (Borgia, Blade).

ASTRON-6 presents A Kennedy/Brooks Inc. Film. The Editor is written by Matthew Kennedy, Adam Brooks, and Conor Sweeney; special effects by Emersen Ziffle, Steven Kostanski, and Aftermath FX; featuring music by Claudio Simonetti, Carpenter Brut, and Jeremy Gillespie; executive producer Andria Spring; associate producers Jerry Wasserman and Kevin Ascolillo II; produced and directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy.

Synopsis:
Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) was once the greatest editor the world had ever seen. Since a horrific accident left him with four wooden fingers on his right hand, he’s had to resort to cutting pulp films and trash pictures. When the lead actors from the film he’s been editing turn up murdered at the studio, Rey is fingered as the number one suspect. The bodies continue to pile up in this absurdist giallo-thriller as Rey struggles to prove his innocence and learn the sinister truth lurking behind the scenes.

Exclusive Stills and Q&A: Director Chad Archibald Talks Bite – Part 1

The recent Fantasia premiere of the body horror-esque feature Bite allegedly induced within a handful of the audience members spontaneous fainting and vomiting (according to festival co-director Mitch Davis), and now that it is heading to the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival as the Opening Night presentation, we thought it time to pick the warped brain of the film’s currently buzzed-about director and through and through horror fan, Chad Archibald.

Read on for Part 1 of our two-part Q&A with Chad, which includes a pair of exclusive stills.

Revolving around a young woman who, upon returning from her bachelorette party in the tropics, begins to succumb to an insect bite (in most hideous ways) she acquired while there, Bite (review here) was conceived by Archibald, whose previous feature horror entries include the 2014 features Ejecta and The Drownsman. Jayme Laforest scripted, with the film produced by Archibald, Cody Calahan, and Christopher Giroux.

With Bite currently seeking distribution and continuing its festival circuit run following the Fantasia press explosion, Archibald took out some time to, well, “bite” into Bite with us.

Dread Central: What was the inspiration for the film?

Archibald: Initially my sister-in-law had come back from a trip to the jungle in Guatemala, and she was covered in all sorts of bug bites. Every year thousands of new bugs are discovered so I thought, ‘Wow, how do you even know what bit you?’ And then I thought, ‘What if one of those just kept getting worse?” From there the idea came pretty easy. I started doing research into how various exotic insects reproduced and how some of their instincts formed. It’s crazy interesting.”

BITE-STILL-1

Dread Central: Shot when, where, for how many days, and on what?

Archibald: “We shot for fifteen days in Guelph, Ontario, in December and then another two to three days down in the Dominican Republic, which was a great time. The intro of the film was shot on a 5d, and the rest of the film was shot on two Red Epics by the wonderful Jeff Maher.”

Dread Central: Bite pays obvious homage to Cronenberg’s The Fly, in not only narrative but in its gleeful approach to “body horror.” How much sway did that film have on informing your own?

Archibald: The idea was never to do a movie like The Fly. It’s an amazing film, but it was never really an inspiration for this film. After the script was done, I did go back and watch it again just to make sure nothing was too similar, and I don’t really think it is, aside from the overall concept of a human turning into a bug. This movie is far less scientific and more organic.”

Dread Central: Bite seems to have a fairly bleak outlook on humanity. The majority of the characters, including the lead, are fairly immoral, self-serving individuals, concerned primarily with self. What informed this approach?

Archibald: “I think the average human is flawed, and I don’t think films should shy away from that. No one is perfect, but good people can make mistakes as well. I wanted Casey (actress Elma Begovic) to have her own internal struggles from insecurities to guilt, but I still wanted the audience to like her and to relate to what she’s going through. As for her friends, a lot of people have shitty friends who really just care about themselves. I feel like people can relate more to flawed characters whether they want to admit it or not.”

BITE-STILL-2

Dread Central: What was your approach to casting, and what was your experience in working with the cast?

Archibald: We did about five days of casting in Toronto, and Elma came in with a selfie shot on her phone as her head shot, which was pretty funny. Regardless, she did a fantastic audition, and it came down to her and two others, but she had grasped the concept of the film so well, even in the audition, that we knew she had to be the one. It was amazing how well the cast gelled and how much fun we had on set covered in goo and little jelly eggs.”

Come back on Friday for Part 2 of our Bite interview with Chad Archibald, in which we dive into the film’s effects. In the interim, you can visit the official Bite website, “like” Bite on Facebook, and follow Bite on Twitter.

Pod (2015)

PodStarring Dean Cates, Lauren Ashley Carter, Larry Fessenden

Directed by Mickey Keating

You’ve got to love a film that stomps on the gas pedal right out of the gate – no beating around the bush, no delicate sense of storytelling to set up the premise – just BAM! Right in your face, here’s what we’re dealing with, now sit back, zip the lips, and get ready to be spooked. Director Mickey Keating’s Pod couldn’t lay it out any better for those with a hankerin’ for some otherworldly invasion showcasing.

As soon as the film opens, we see former soldier Martin (Fessenden) attempting to hunt something in the woods, or is it hunting him? After a not-so-chance encounter with whatever was careening through the snowy forest, Smith goes into hiding, and it’s up to his brother, Ed (Cates), and reluctant burnout sister, Lyla (Carter), to travel to his home and perform an impromptu intervention for the sad soul who is suffering from PTSD.

Upon their arrival, it’s plain to see that Marvin has completely gone off the rails – with a freshly-shorn hairdo and a few less teeth (thanks to some self-imposed dental work – gotta remove those alien transponders), he’s ranting incessantly about conspiracies and how multiple members of his former platoon have gone missing without a trace. He also reveals that he’s locked away one of “them” down in the basement and strictly forbids his siblings from going down there to check it out. Fessenden needs to be awarded something bright and shiny for his work as the paranoid veteran- his rambling and complete sense of imbalance are the stuff of notoriety – a potent performance for sure.

The remainder of the film is balanced with a nice mix of jump-scares and moments that will have you questioning Marvin’s claims – is there something down in the cellar that he captured in the woods, or has his PTSD decimated what was left of his fragile psyche? The combination of Cates and Carter works to a fault – Cates plays the non-believing brother, while Carter turns into a screaming buffoon somewhere towards the final third of the film and is rather unnerving to watch as a whole.

Keating’s directorial style relies on the “you come up with your own conclusion” gameplan – the pieces are in place, and all you have to do is assemble them for the truth – simple, but effective. Think one half creature-feature and one half serious paranoia film… that is, if what Martin endured really did happen.

Not much more can be drawn out to describe this one other than straightforward, chilling, and a presentation that provides results. Is it a perfect film? Not by a long shot , but it surely is one to watch late at night with the lights killed – recommended.

First Summit Teaser Hits the Road

$

Shot for just $20,000 in January of 2013, Christina Raia’s Summit had its world premiere at this year’s Manhattan Film Festival, where it won Best Horror Film. It will screen at Scare-A-Con next month and hit VOD sometime in early 2016, and on tap today is the first teaser trailer.

Summit is described as a character-driven horror drama that pays homage to the slasher genre in its seemingly cliche set-up. The film aims to bring a fresh amount of depth to modern horror.

It works on a face value level as an eerie thriller that will shock and unsettle you but is also a deeper film that explores human nature and relationships,” says Raia. “It aspires to be a notable addition to not only the horror genre but independent cinema in general.”

Written and directed by Christina Raia, the film stars Lauren A Kennedy, Rob Ceriello, Emma Barret, Ricardo Manigat, and Ryan Kramer.

Synopsis:
Five college friends hit the road for a ski trip. When they end up at the wrong location and can’t backtrack because of the intense cold and secluded surroundings, they decide to take shelter in an abandoned house overnight. But when they wake in the morning, things are not quite what they seemed, and it’s too late to turn back.

Missed out on ZombiU because you didn’t have a Wii U? Now you can right that wrong by digging on a new and remastered version for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and on PC via UPlay. We’re giving away several codes for each.

To enter for your chance to win, just send an email to contests@dreadcentral.com including your FULL NAME AND WHICH PLATFORM YOU WANT IT ON. We’ll get it to you by day’s end so you have it for the weekend.

Synopsis:
ZOMBI puts players in the middle of an infected London, where an outbreak has distorted the population into mindless monsters preying on the flesh of the few remaining survivors. All the ingredients of the acclaimed fear-fueled first-person shooter are back, delivering all of the most intense chaos and tension to multiple new platforms. In this reawakened version, a number of updates have been introduced for the new consoles including new melee weapons, faster load times, improved flashlight gameplay, and overall visual effects.

ZOMBI puts an emphasis on self-preservation and pushes players to do whatever it takes to survive against the zombie attack. ZOMBI enforces the feeling of suspense and oppression by disabling the pause function, even while players search through the bug-out bag in the menu. A necessary component for each player’s survival, the bug-out bag contains all their tools, inventory, first aid kits, maps, and more. The game also relies on the permadeath system where character death is final, forcing you to respawn as a new character without your previous inventory collection or bug-out bag. The question remains: Should players risk confronting their old, infected character to get their bag back or abandon their inventory and start again?

ZOMBI is now available worldwide as a digital download for $19.99.

ZOMBI will also be one of the new digital games featured in Microsoft’s Summer Spotlight on Xbox One during the game’s launch week.

So, what do you think? Excited to bash zombies in London again? Let me know what you think below, and I’ll let you know what I think with a full review later this week!

Nature Strikes Back in Radioactive Flesh Eating Foliage

We treat Mother Nature so poorly that she’s bound to eventually kill us all, and though that’s an idea ripe for social commentary, we have a feeling Dusty W. Fleischman isn’t quite interested in such things. His horror-comedy Radioactive Flesh Eating Foliage is coming soon, and we’ve got the teaser today.

Look for this wacky slice of (intentional) stupidity on DVD October 30th.

Written and directed by Fleischman, the film stars Rita Christine, Jesse L. Green, Mel Heflin, Steve Fiendish, Amber Kidwell, Matt Nuefeld, Bob “Gunslinger” Singer, Invader Bethany, Kelsey Cooper, Heather Cahill, Sharrie Mccain, and Jenny Jannetty.

Synopsis:
On the mountains in Western Maryland a large chemical company has been dumping its waste in the woods. Now a strange thing has happened. The trees have been attacking hikers! The company sends in two mercenary convicts to deal with the problem, but things don’t go well. The plot thickens as a college professor takes a group of students out onto the mountain to look for the elusive “goatman” that is believed to be responsible for the attacks. Along the way they meet a strange cast of characters and soon find that they are all now being hunted by the killer shrubbery. They have a particular taste for the lovely flesh of the ladies. Will any of them make it out alive, or is mankind doomed to become food for the foliage?!?

Left 4 Dead Cast Joins Zombie Army Trilogy in Free Update

$

Yup, headline says it all, folks. If what was holding you back from buying Rebellion’s Zombie Army Trilogy was the lack of a wisecracking Southern black high school gym coach and a perpetually disgruntled biker, your prayers have been answered. Still confused on the concept? Check out the trailer:

So while previously you shot Nazi zombies in an alternate reality World War II with period appropriate characters, you now shoot them with the cast of both Left 4 Dead games. “But wait,” you ask, “how did the cast of the titles time travel all the way back to Berlin? And isn’t Bill supposed to be canonically dead? This ruins my immersion in this demon-worshiping zombie Nazi Hitler death cult timeline!” Well, worry not, conspicuously designed just for this hypothetical situation person, because the folks at Rebellion would like to remind you that they also run a comic distribution service! You can check it out the 12-page backstory comic for free here. I read it, and the promise of answering any questions is about as loose as your stepdad telling you he’s really excited to go to your piano recital, but all of this is free as hell, so it’s hard to complain.

If you haven’t played any of the Nazi Zombie Army games, Zombie Army Trilogy is a great deal right now. They dropped the price from $45 to $15 for the weekend, so pick it up before Monday if you want to see what slow-mo sniping zombies with up to four friends is all about. You can also pick up a four-pack for $45, so you can save a few more bucks by dividing that four ways. Sure, the update is about as fluff as a marshmallow pillow, but the actual series is a lot of mindless fun. Pick it up, have fun with the extras, and shoot zombies. Sounds like a win to me.

Behold Kanye West – Re-Animator

In the most WTF story of the week, we now have the artwork and details for the upcoming mash-up novella, Kanye West – Re-Animator from author Joshua Chaplinsky and H.P. Lovecraft! That’s right, Kanye West – Re-Animator!

Look for it September 1st via Yolo House Publishers. Check out the goods below via LitReactor.

Synopsis:
Appropriately, it started out as an experiment, where every time the name Herbert and/or West came up, I replaced it with Kanye. Then, I went through and changed certain details of the story to reflect Kanye’s biography. Finally, I discovered what the piece was really about and began turning it into a bizarre mix of Lovecraftian horror and hip-hop history. It puts a whole new spin on both the Kanye persona and Lovecraft’s original story.

In it, Kanye attempts to reanimate a moribund hip-hop scene, only to come to the conclusion that his music is so powerful, it should be used to reanimate the dead. And who better to reanimate than those two legendary titans gone before their time—Biggie [Smalls] and Tupac [Shakur]? Hilarity and carnage ensue.

Work In Progress: Killing Floor 2 New Incinerate N’ Detonate Content Pack Brings The Heat

It’s been awhile since I last spent quality time with Killing Floor 2. In my last report, I mentioned that the game was in a very playable state, more polished than the original if not lacking a lot of the content. Well, the people at Tripwire seem to want to address this concern, with the latest major update “Incinerate N’ Detonate” providing a metric shit-ton of new stuff. Here’s a rundown of what it brings to the table:

-Two New “Perks” (read class): The Firebug and Demolitionist bring fire and demolition respectively, rounding out the roster to six diverse roles
-Two New Maps: Catacombs and Evacuation Point, bringing the total number of maps also to six
-New Weapons: Along with the four new weapons for each of the new Perks, dual 9mm pistols make a return. Also, a new Berserker melee weapon the Zweihander is available as a cross promotion for those that own Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
-Two Crossover Promotional Characters: Along with the Zweihander, owners of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare will recieve the Knight character. Players who own Red Orchestra 2 recieve the Anton Strasser character
-New Rebalanced Berserker Skill Tree: According to fans, this needed an overhaul. They did that.
-After action report recaps players’ accomplishments and allows for map/kick votes
-New hit zones make damage more than just a game of headshot vs bodyshot
-New Achievements
-Tweaked and rebalanced skill trees
-Audio fixes

Whew, that’s quite the list of new content. Aside from enemy additions, that’s 50% more game for your buck. Not bad for a totally free update. Still, the content doesn’t matter if it isn’t good, so how does it hold up? As someone whose only real problem was the game’s lack of content, I have to say that it holds up pretty damn well.

Let’s dive into the meat and potatoes of it first, the new Perks. While the previous four Perks were varied enough to give each player a distinct role, it was odd math that a six player game would only have four different specializations. Moreover, support was the only class that could deal with the sub-bosses like Fleshpounders. While every class generally had a way to be combat effective in most situations, a well rounded team comp was necessary to survive. Without enough options for everyone to play a different role, you’d have people double up, which adds an unnecessary feeling of redundancy in situations your class doesn’t specialize in.

The Firebug Perk on face value serves the same crowd clearing roles as the Commando, but with fire. Seems like a win right there, but the class is slightly more complex than that. While the Commando focuses on precise kills at a distance so that the Berserker can finish off what’s left, the Firebug actually splits between damage over time area of effect and heavy focused damage. It is a more diverse class than the “kill it with fire” image, and the skill tree splits between these AOE clear and high impact roles. The base weapon “Caulk n’ Burn” and the Flamethrower both throw fire over a large area, but the Trench Gun and Microwave Gun are more focused. Even with the area of effect specialization, any MMO player can tell you the value of liberally applied DOTs to even the mightiest of raid bosses. As far as the feel of the class, it can be a bit difficult to tell exactly what kind of impact your Flamethrower has on the heartier enemies, but is well worth the Zeds crumpling to the floor in agony or exploding via microwaves.

The Demolitionist plays as dual purpose AOE and boss-killer. While that might sound overpowered, dealing with both hordes of brutes and single towering monstrosities with equal prejudice, the class is more complicated to play than the others. Most obviously, as an entirely explosive class there is constantly the threat of damaging yourself and teammates. Given your limited ammo and long reloads, shots have to be set up before taken. Brush up on your circle-strafing, and remember to check your six for an opposing wall of Zed. Get cornered, and it is hard for this Perk to get out of a bind.

While explosions might seem simple enough, it adds little caveats beyond the friendly fire that makes the weapon choice more interesting than other classes. The basic weapon is the HX 25 Grenade Pistol that simply enough fires grenades, but the first available purchasable weapon option is a bundle of C4. The C4 can be placed up to eight times, and detonated in the order it was placed. Most players will pass this up for the second option, the more expensive M79 Grenade Launcher. Even this has limitations, requiring a max distance before the projectiles explode. The unexploded rounds still deal enough damage to kill a basic Zed, but certainly not with the desired effect. The last weapon is a RPG-7 Rocket Launcher, which launches rockets and brings bosses down in a handful of rounds. Okay, so maybe only MOST of the class is complicated. The skill tree further complicates things, with few straight power upgrades. Most of the skills deal with some kind of functionality, like the ability to booby trap doors vs a percentage of your grenades going through sonic barriers.

Between the Demolitionist and Firebug, I’ll have to say I enjoyed the Firebug more. Call me old fashioned, but it isn’t a proper slaughtering unless fire is involved. I’m a man that enjoys a good fragging as much as anyone, but there’s something more satisfying about killing shit with fire. Those agonized screams, that crisp pork smell… heaven. The two classes bring enough new to the table to make the common rolls of “trash clearer” and “boss killer” a bit more diverse and interesting, without stepping on the toes of any of the previous classes.

Speaking of previous classes, the Berserker got an overhaul. Fair warning, I did not play a whole lot of Berserker during my first foray into the world of Killing Floor 2, so my baseline of knowledge is entirely based on fans, a.k.a. oversensitive scum who will claim holocaust at the slightest perceived offence against their favorite class. Even so, I can see the problem with “Night Vision” being a skill opposed to a 20% ammo increase. Previously, the Perk was divided between skills that activated when you had lower health and another set of set that just made you better. Skills that improve based on how dead you are are only cool until you realize they make you dead, and their general improvement skills were pretty lackluster and hard to notice.

Now, the tree is divvied up between general stat improvement and counter-attacks. The parry system is hard to master, especially with the unblockable attacks denoted by a fiery red animation. Still, if you main Berserker, it is a system you will enjoy delving into. It doesn’t really make sense that they didn’t previously have skills for this mechanic, since it is unique to the Berserker playstyle.  Giving a skill tree focus on this mechanic makes playing this class more rewarding, and as far as I can tell is a welcome improvement. Also, previous lame functional skills like Night Vision and immunity to Clot grabs now just come with the Perk.

Two new maps were also introduced in the patch, bringing some much needed variety to the sparse list of locals. Evacuation point feels more like a standard KF map: plenty of space to move around, choke points to funnel through, and new zones to fall back to. From a design standpoint, it is pretty vanilla, but balanced. It can be a bit too easy to lure Zeds into an area more advantageous to your play style, but at least everyone will find some way to excell on the map. Not likely to be anyone’s favorite, but a solid addition.

EvacPoint3

The new Catacombs map, on the other hand, will likely be either your favorite map or absolutely despised. In a renovated tourist attraction in Italy, Catacombs takes place entirely in labyrinthine cramped tunnels with artificial lighting. There are very few vantage points to take aim from, and the twisting tunnels could mean a wall of Zed lurks around every corner. Most of the lighting can be destroyed, so wanton explosives or errant shots make for a much more challenging experience. It isn’t exactly the most balanced map, and I’m sure the amount of cheap deaths will turn players off, but it’s unique enough to make up for that in my mind.

There are also a few functional improvements that you might not recognize if not a fan. New hit-zones were introduced, making the previous “headshot vs bodyshot” system more intricate. Power cores on the Fleshpounders and Hans Volter’s now take increased damage, and metallic implants will make a “ping” sound when shot. This comes hand-in-hand with the updated audio system, with heavier sound effects giving better information. As a small edition, the boss spawn now also comes with a hint as to how to beat him, which will be welcome for new players. After Action reports will now recap how each player did, and allow players to vote on the next map/kicking that filthy scrub who doesn’t know the difference between a Clot and a Bloat.

As someone who enjoyed Killing Floor 2 even in its content deprived state, this is just what the doctor ordered. Even for a game still in Early Access, it is impressive to see so much content delivered at once. While some people prefer a perpetual trickle of stuff, as someone who doesn’t really have time to follow a game week after week, these larger chunks are exactly what I like to see. Fans of the series will be pleased with the update, and those still on the fence should give it a look. When it hits shelves “soon” (the release date is still unconfirmed), it’ll make the whole $30 package well worth it.

Curse of Downers Grove, The (2015)

The Curse of Downers GroveStarring Bella Heathcote, Lucas Till, Kevin Zegers, Penelope Mitchell, Zane Holtz, Helen Slater

Directed by Derick Martini

The Curse of Downers Grove is a teen angst quasi-horror flick adapted from the Michael Hornburg novel Downers Grove, and it’s written by Bret Easton Ellis and the film’s director, Derick Martini.

Novelist Ellis is famous for his fiction and the movies made from them – Less Than Zero, American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction, and The Informers – but this is the first time he’s adapted someone else’s work for the screen. Up-and-coming indie filmmaker Derick Martini found fame with Lymelife, which was exec produced by Martin Scorsese. His follow-up, Hick, starred Chloe Grace Moretz, Blake Lively, and Eddie Redmayne. For two such magnetic creators, it’s hard to imagine the result of their collaboration is so pedestrian. Not that The Curse of Downers Grove is bad (I liked it), but I expected more considering the source.

Starring Bella Heathcote, Lucas Till, Kevin Zegers, Penelope Mitchell, Zane Holtz, Helen Slater, and Tom Arnold, the story takes place in the aptly named Downer’s Grove, a small town where not much goes right. Especially not for the student body: For the past eight years, ever since the high school was built on sacred land, one senior from the graduating class has died in a horrible freak accident just before graduation day.

The action follows Chrissie Swanson (Heathcote), who, despite having witnessed last year’s death up close and personal, does not believe there’s a curse at all. On the weekend before the cap and gown ceremony, Chrissie and her younger brother, Dave (Martin Spanjers), are left alone when their mom (Slater) goes to Las Vegas for a short getaway with her boyfriend.

Needless to say, the party soon gets started, and Chrissie and her BFF Tracy (Mitchell) are taking reckless chances with drink, drugs, and bad boys. One boy, Chuck (Zegers), is particularly bad, and Chrissie narrowly avoids being assaulted by fighting back and poking his eye out with her thumb. The disfigurement dashes Chuck’s fledgling football career, and he promises to get revenge… is it the curse at work, or is Chrissie just at the center of a harmonious convergence of bad luck?

The acting is excellent, and the dialogue is good (though not as sparkling as in Ellis’ novels… perhaps he dumbed it down a bit for the teen movie audience). The story moves right along, and the characters are fun. The visuals are standard issue (cinematography and editing: nothing special), and ultimately, The Curse of Downer’s Grove doesn’t deliver as a horror film. But it’s an entertaining enough thriller and a decent time waster if there’s nothing else on.
