Official Aggression Scale Trailer Takes Aim

With its May release rapidly approaching, we've got the official trailer for Steven C. Miller's latest film The Aggression Scale on tap, and believe us, kids; it means business!

From the Press Release
Anchor Bay Films is proud to announce the May 29, 2012, release of The Aggression Scale on Blu-ray™ and DVD. Coming off a successful buzz-creating midnight showing at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, The Aggression Scale is a unique take on the home invasion thriller with two teenagers confronting some heavily armed bad guys who are looking for stolen cash, leading to a bloody battle of wits and will. Directed by Steven C. Miller (Scream of the Banshee), the film stars Dana Ashbrook (“Twin Peaks”), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) and Ray Wise (“Twin Peaks,” “Reaper”).

When out-on-bail mob boss Bellavance (Wise) discovers that $500,000 of his money is missing, he sends four hardcore hit men (including Ashbrook and Mears) to send a “loud and messy” message to the suspected thieves’ families. But when the killers invade the Rutledge home, they’ll meet the household’s emotionally disturbed young son, Owen (Ryan Hartwig). Owen has a history of violent behavior, knows how to make lethal booby-traps, and is about to teach these thugs some deadly lessons in extreme vengeance. Fabianne Therese co-stars in the savage thriller that IndieWire called “like Home Alone with more death!”

Webster’s dictionary defines "The Aggression Scale" as the frequency of overt aggressive behaviors in children that may result in physical or psychological injury to others, but The Aggression Scale here isn’t scientific. It’s a visceral reaction from two unusual teenagers whose most vicious instincts are unleashed in order to protect themselves and their home. Disturbing, dark, and unforgettable, The Aggression Scale is a pulse-pounding ride that will leave you in a sweat.

The Aggression Scale Blu-ray™ and DVD include “The Making of The Aggression Scale” featurette. SRP is $24.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for the DVD.

Casting Update and More on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

$
0
0

Sin City: A Dame to Kill ForMore news has slipped out with regard to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, including some familiar faces that will be returning, and of course we have it all for you right here!

During a recent chat with MTV, Robert Rodriguez confirmed that both Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson will be returning. He told the site, "I just had lunch with Mickey [Rourke] this weekend. He's all excited to come back, but he's probably the first one. I saw Rosario [Dawson] too. I ran into her for something else, and she's pumped. They've always been excited about doing another one so that will be fun."

As for the casting process, Rodriguez and Frank Miller will be handling that. "Frank and I go together to meet everybody, and I like seeing his reaction because he drew these characters so long, and when they walk in the room, you see it on his face. He doesn't know who it's going to be until he sees them. Then he's like, 'This is exactly like the character I created.' It's pretty exciting."

And we can expect the structure to remain basically the same as the original with Rodriguez indicating, "Three is a good number. I think two is just weird. Three feels like a dramatic structure, even if they're separate stories. I feels like one, two, three acts and maybe a wrap-around. It worked on Sin City, and that's probably the first anthology that ever worked that I can think of. So I'm going to stick with that template because, one, I invented it. I can claim it and go, 'I'm going to do it again.' If it doesn't work, then I'll know that Sin City was just a fluke."

The film, a Quick Draw Production, will be produced by Rodriguez and producing partners Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic and by Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergei Bespalov and Stephen L’Hereux. Miller, The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax’s Adam Fields will act as executive producers. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Frank Miller and Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film is expected to begin production this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Exclusive Interview: Actress Alexa Vega on The Devil’s Carnival and More

Exclusive Interview: Actress Alexa Vega on The Devil’s Carnival and MoreActress Alexa Vega reunited with many of the members from her Repo! The Genetic Opera family on director Darren Lynn Bousman’s latest project called The Devil’s Carnival, including Terrance Zdunich (who also penned the story and music for the project), Bill Moseley and Ogre.

During Dread Central’s recent set visit for The Devil’s Carnival (review here), we had the chance to briefly catch up with the actress to hear more from her about reuniting with her Repo! family and get a peek into the world of her carnie character Wick.

Check out our interview with Vega below, and make sure to catch The Devil’s Carnival during its Road Show Tour, which is currently under way in North America!

Dread Central: So how early on did Darren bring you into The Devil’s Carnival?

Alexa Vega: It was super last minute; he actually came to me like three days ago, and it just sort of happened. He had a couple of characters that he was trying to nail down and work them into one role because one of the actresses dropped out. From there, we just started playing around with Wick’s character and the role so what started out a pretty small, minor character ended up being one that pops up a lot throughout The Devil’s Carnival in quite a few scenes.

Dread Central: Tell us more about Wick and how she plays into this world of The Devil’s Carnival.

Alexa Vega: Wick’s only in two songs, but she’s kind of all over the place; secretly, I think she feels like she could run this place much better than anyone else so I’ve given her that kind of attitude. She’s this crazy clown that loves to torment people, and she rules over her Woe-Maidens, who kind of do Wick’s bidding. She loves to find the joke within someone’s torment- whether it’s a father looking for his son or a girl being whipped in front of an audience. That’s the kind of girl Wick is.

Dread Central: How much fun is it reuniting with a bunch of your Repo! family members on this, especially since it’s a completely different world for all of you to play in this time around?

Alexa Vega: It’s so great to be reuniting with the Repo! family for this project because we all bonded together so closely making that movie, and it was something really unique and incredible, so to get to make another unique project with this ‘family’ just feels so awesome, and I think we all enjoy this and we all enjoy working together. I think The Devil’s Carnival definitely has its own vibe outside of Repo!, which is cool, but I can definitely see why there are those comparisons.

Yes, we’re actors and we go where the work is, but in general there aren’t movies like Repo! and there aren’t movies like The Devil’s Carnival really being made very often these days. Darren truly loves creating these wacky and inventive projects, and while we’re making these for a smaller audience, I think it fulfills all of us creatively because we don’t really have outlets like this out there for us to continue doing.

Dread Central: Since you’re an actress that so many people have watched grow up throughout your career so far, would you say that Wick is definitely a big transitional moment for you? She’s certainly nothing like Shiloh was in Repo!.

Alexa Vega: This character is so unlike anything I’ve ever played and definitely a 180 from Shiloh. Shiloh was a sweet, innocent girl, and Wick is just nuts. I really love the challenge of completely transforming myself like this because it’s so different than what fans are expecting me to look like and that’s pretty cool. Keep people guessing- it makes things way more interesting.

Dread Central: I know that The Devil’s Carnival is a perfect example of truly indie filmmaking, which is never an easy feat for anyone on board; does Darren’s enthusiasm for Terrance’s material help keep you motivated when you’re dealing with things like frigid temperatures, wind storms and shooting long hours overnight?

Alexa Vega: His enthusiasm, his creativity for sure were big factors, but also what the project entailed was a huge draw for me and makes all the late nights in the cold worth it. There’s also who’s involved with The Devil’s Carnival that made me really want to be a part of it, too. This isn’t just some weekend project that Darren or Terrance slapped together at the last minute; there is a well-oiled machine of filmmaking going on within all this chaos, and while this is a low-budget project, it is well-orchestrated, and a lot of thought went into every tiny detail inside this carnival. When things work out like they have on The Devil’s Carnival, you just learn to move along quickly to keep up with everyone and just jump right in.

The best part about a project like this is that there are no egos; we’re all doing this project because we genuinely love it, we believe in Darren and we’re all excited to be part of something different and to get to be truly creative in a business that doesn’t always let you be creative.

Look for James McTeigue's The Raven starring John Cusack, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson on April 27th, 2012.

The Raven begins with Poe arriving in Baltimore as a serial killer is terrorizing the city, using the writer’s stories as the inspiration for his crimes. Poe is a suspect at first, but he eventually joins forces with a police inspector to solve the crimes and save the woman he loves.

Synopsis
In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Bryan Fuller Talks Bringing Hannibal to NBC

Bryan Fuller Talks Bringing Hannibal to NBCIt's going to be very interesting to see just how Bryan Fuller and company intend to bring the nefarious Hannibal the Cannibal to the small screen. Recently Fuller shed some light on the transition.

Fuller ("Pushing Daises", "Heroes") is taking five pages of backstory about the infamous cannibal psychiatrist from Thomas Harris’ book Red Dragon and using it as the basis for the first couple of seasons of his planned drama.

“There is a cheery disposition to our Hannibal,” Fuller explains to EW of the yet-to-be-cast Lecter. “He’s not being telegraphed as a villain. If the audience didn’t know who he was, they wouldn’t see him coming. What we have is Alfred Hitchcock’s principle of suspense — show the audience the bomb under the table and let them sweat when it’s going to go boom. So the audience knows who Hannibal is so we don’t have to overplay his villainy. We get to subvert his legacy and give the audience twists and turns.

Fuller went on to describe the series as a weird sort of "love story" between Lecter and FBI Agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). Hannibal has said [to Graham] in a couple of the movies, ‘You’re a lot more like me than you realize.’ We’ll get to the bottom of exactly what that means over the course of the first two seasons. But we’re taking our sweet precious time.”

"Hannibal" will also be unusual because it’s planned as a 13-episode-per-season show. So though the drama won’t rush Hannibal’s story, it also won’t feel like its padded with throwaway episodes either. "Doing a cable model on network television gives us the opportunity not to dally in our storytelling because we have a lot of real estate to cover,” Fuller says. “I pitched a seven-season arc including stories from various [Thomas Harris] books.

The show will include familiar characters from Harris’ novels, though he’s “Starbucking” the genders of a couple of them. FBI boss Jack Crawford will remain male, but Dr. Alan Bloom is becoming Dr. Alana Bloom, and tabloid journalist Freddy Lounds is becoming tabloid blogger Fredricka Lounds. The pilot episode will be directed by David Slade.

More as it comes.

Exclusive: Read an Excerpt from Anno Dracula: The Bloody Red Baron!

I couldn't praise Kim Newman's epic vampire novel Anno Dracula enough when I reviewed Titan's new edition last year. Thankfully Titan is giving the same royal treatment to the other books in the series, starting with the sequel, The Bloody Red Baron, from which we have an exclusive excerpt.

Jumping forward to 1918, we are in the depths of World War I. Of course, this being the world of Anno Dracula, this is not the war we know. Dracula escaped his fate in Anno Dracula and has allied with the forces of the Kaiser to start the war to end all wars. "Warm" and vampiric troops on both sides fight the same battles we know but with a twist, just as Newman twisted the events of the Jack the Ripper slayings in the first book.

In this case the Red Baron is just that... blood red! Vampiric fighter pilots wage midnight warfare in the skies while our heroes from the first book, Beauregard and Reed, pursue an end to the fighting.

We're proud to present an exclusive excerpt from early in the book. Here we meet Beauregard again and discover some of the events that lead up to this version of the war. As Beauregard heads to a meeting with the secretive Diogenes Club, we watch him weave his way through a London at war.

Lionsgate Picks Francis Lawrence to Direct Catching Fire

$

Lionsgate has picked Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) to direct The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, replacing Gary Ross, who opted out of the gig after helming the hugely successful first installment of the franchise.

Per THR, Lawrence’s selection raises the question of the state of the Catching Fire screenplay. Ross, who is a writer as much as he is a director, worked on The Hunger Games script and was planning on spending two months honing Fire, working from a script penned by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire). The producers and the new director now will need to keep working with Beaufoy or hire new scribes to hammer out the script before shooting begins.

The moviemakers are facing a ticking clock, especially since Lionsgate has set a November 22, 2013, release date for Catching Fire, the second of four planned movies based on Suzanne Collins' trilogy of books. Also coming into play is that shooing for Fire likely needs to be done by early January so that star Jennifer Lawrence, who is not related to the Austria-born director, can begin shooting the sequel to X-Men: First Class in late January. Fox, which is making that movie, has an option on the actress that supersedes her Lionsgate commitment.

The sequel to the 2008 bestseller continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Due to the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games.

Park Chan-wook Given The AxeWith Stoker getting ready to set sail for acclaimed director Park Chan-Wook, all eyes are on him to see what he'll be up to next. Turns out he has quite The Axe to grind! Read on for details.

Chan-wook tells the Korea Joon Gang Daily, "I was planning to make another film, 'The Axe,' before I started shooting 'Stoker.' But while I was still seeking investors for that film, I received the screenplay for 'Stoker.' So 'The Axe' will be my next work, though I need to do some more work on the casting and attracting investors. I’m also thinking about making a historical film, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to do that."

After taking off on a flight from New York to Los Angeles on New Years Eve, the passengers of Flight 37A are soon sent into shock and alarm as the plane experiences severe turbulence. Through footage captured by two teenage sisters, the accident and crash lead to further events that should not be viewed by the faint of heart. As they continue to film, it becomes apparent that the remaining survivors of Flight 37A may not survive the night.
