We recently had the opportunity to sit down and watch the latest film from Anthony DiBlasi (Dread, Cassadaga, Missionary), entitled Last Shift, and let me tell you… it’s one of the scariest flicks we’ve seen all year. You’ll be able to see it for yourself when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on October 6th.

Juliana Harkavy and Joshua Mikel star.

Synopsis:
From director Anthony DiBlasi comes a Manson-inspired horror film centering around a transitioning police station. Officer Jessica Loren has been assigned to wait for a Hazmat team to pick up bio-hazardous waste from the station’s armory. But unbeknownst to Jessica, cult leader John Michael Paymon has haunted the department ever since he and two of this followers committed suicide a year ago to date. And now, Jessica is about to find out how dangerous they can be when she’s left alone on this Last Shift.

Exclusive: Marisol Nichols Talks Her New Role on Teen Wolf and More

marisonnicholsLast night “Teen Wolf’s” midseason finale aired, leaving a major cliffhanger with regard to Malia (Shelley Hennig) and her mother, The Desert Wolf, portrayed by Marisol Nichols.  Aside from the fact that she’s heading to Beacon Hills to kill her daughter, we don’t know much about Nichols’ character so when we were given the chance to chat with her, of course we took it!

Read on to learn more about what Marisol will be up to on the show; a little bit about her next horror project, a film titled Desert Storm; and a couple of organizations she’s involved with that are near and dear to her heart.

DC: Now, you’re going to be jumping into a series that has a very passionate fan base after many years on the air – were you already familiar with the show, or did you find yourself having to read up on who’s who in the show to ready yourself for the role?

Marisol Nichols: I actually had to start doing research on it! I had no idea, and that’s not saying much because I don’t watch much TV, so I had to catch up and say, “Wow, I had no idea that this was such a huge phenomenon right now!” So it’s a real joy.

DC: Your character, The Desert Wolf, has been built up quite a bit over the course of the last several episodes, and not exactly in the most positive of ways – were you hesitant to take on what’s likely to be a polarizing character, or was that all part of the appeal?

MN: Oh no! That was all part of the appeal – if something’s been built up, I’m more than happy to fill those shoes. I still don’t know where they’re taking her, or what she’ll eventually turn into, but all I knew about the role was that they’d been building it up for a while, and here it was, so I was actually more happy about that than having it be brand new with no setup.

marisolnichols-teenwolfDC: Any idea of who you’ll be interacting with on the show? I think the fans are going to want to see your character together with Peter, of course.

MN: Right! I have absolutely no idea, and when I got the role, I didn’t know anything about it, and I still have yet to read a whole script. It was all under wraps right up until the first day I started shooting, and I was like, “Who am I? What am I doing? Who’s my daughter?” I’m playing catch-up so they haven’t been telling me who I’m going to be interacting with or what I’m doing for that fact, so I’m going to be looking forward to that as well as we go. It’s sort of similar to when I was on “24” and I’d read a script and wonder, “Am I alive, or am I dead?”

DC: You’re attached to a new horror film, Desert Storm – what can you tell us about that?

MN: Oh yeah! That’s an independent film written by some people that I know that have put out some fairly awesome indies, and it’s sort of a military/science-fiction horror film. It should be fun, and I’m really looking forward to it.

DC: Aside from those projects, what can we look forward to seeing you in down the road?

MN: I’ll be going back on “NCIS” – I’ve sort of been recurring on that, so I’ll be heading out to shoot for that in about two months.

DC: Lastly, you’re the founder of Foundation for a Slavery-Free World and the spokesperson for Youth for Human Rights International – tell us all about both of these organizations if you wouldn’t mind.

MN: Sure – Youth for Human Rights International is an organization that travels around the world, and has for the last 11 years, educating about the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That is [a list of] 30 human rights that was put together with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt after World War II, and they’re basically rights that you have because you’re human – things like no torture, the right to live freely, the right for food and shelter, that sort of thing. Most importantly on that list is #4: No slavery. So I got involved in the organization partly because of my mother-in-law and also because I’m very much in favor of human rights and the rights of the people. As I got more involved and learned more about human trafficking, I founded my own organization called Foundation for a Slavery-Free World because I wanted to focus more exclusively on #4, so I partner with other organizations in any way that I can. I’ll be throwing my second red-carpet event in Hollywood on September 21st [at Eva Longoria’s restaurant, Beso], and we’ll be awarding other organizations for their amazing work that they’ve done in the field of human trafficking.

Our thanks to Marisol for her time.  “Teen Wolf” Season 5 resumes in January 2016.

Cameron McCasland’s Short Film Tailypo Explores Creepy Appalachian Folktale

As someone who was born and raised in Kentucky, I’ve always had a fascination with Appalachian folklore, especially tales involving ghosts, monsters, or supernatural shenanigans. So when director Cameron McCasland’s short film Tailypo slid across my virtual desk, I was more than a little intrigued by what the flick had to offer, especially since it was filmed in my neck of the woods.

Tailypo was filmed at Copper Canyon Guntown Ranch in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, which is a fantastic setting for a creepy story centered around Appalachian cryptozoology. McCasland first heard about the folktale years ago as a child, and it apparently left quite an impression.

The first time I heard this legend, I was in elementary school, and my teacher told it to us around Halloween. It always stuck with me and creeped me out. I wanted to tell it again, in a way that was frightening but still accessible in the same way it was to me as a kid,” he explained.

Starring David Chattam and featuring the voice of TV horror host Danielle Geleherter (aka Penny Dreadful), Tailypo is now available to view online. In fact, you can find the film hanging out below. For more info about the flick, be sure to swing by the Red Headed Revolution website.

Takashi Miike’s Thriller Shield of Straw Tapped for English-Language Remake

Remakes — you’re either okay with them or you’re not. And while I’m not against the practice in theory, I am a little peeved that filmmaker Takashi Miike’s excellent thriller Shield of Straw is getting an English-language remake. It’s a fantastic movie, but here’s my thing: Why not actually release the original version in North America instead of putting so much time and effort into crafting a remake? And have we learned nothing from Eric Valette’s One Missed Call? Okay, I’m off my soapbox now.

According to the good folks over at Deadline, Chris and Paul Weitz will spearhead the project for their production banner Depth of Field. The husband and wife team responsible for Olympus Has Fallen and its sequel, London Has Fallen, will reportedly pen the script. As of this writing, it’s unknown which director will step behind the camera to bring this project to fruition.

If you haven’t seen Shield of Straw, I’m not surprised. For some odd reason, the film has yet to see a proper release in the States. Should the opportunity arise, do not hesitate to check it out.

Here’s what Miike’s thriller is all about.

After killing a 7-year-old girl, psychopath Kunihide Kyomaru turns himself in to the police. Since his victim was the daughter of one of the country’s richest men, terminally ill billionaire Ninagawa, who buys ads in all the major papers offering a hefty reward for anyone who kills Kunihide. There are a few caveats, including a clause that the execution must be authorized by the government, but the consequences are clear: It’s open season on Kunihide, who has nothing but five dedicated cops to protect him, led by security police lieutenant Kazuki Mekari.

Curious about Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw? Check out the trailer below.

Horror Short PYOTR495 Launches Indiegogo Campaign

One thing I absolutely adore about the indie horror scene is its love of practical effects. Filmmakers who don’t have a lot of cash to throw around are making sure to use their funds in the best way possible, and that includes keeping things old school. It’s what separates indie productions from most modern Hollywood endeavors. Who knows — maybe we’ll see a full-on practical effects resurgence in mainstream horror cinema. I think it’s time, and some fans are clearly ready.

The upcoming horror short PYOTR495, which explores what happens when a 16-year-old with dangerous secrets is targeted by an “ultranationalist group” strengthened by LGBT propaganda laws in Russia, plans to incorporate practical effects into the finished product. In order for that to happen, they’ll need a little help from horror fans via a recently launched Indiegogo campaign.

Here’s how writer/director Blake Mawson describes the flick:

PYOTR495 is a short film set in Russia in the year 2014. The country has invaded the Crimea region of the Ukraine, the newly instated LGBT propaganda law makes it illegal to present gay life as normal, while Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approval rating is at a 6-year high. We begin in the run-down, white Soviet-era tower blocks in the Cheryomushki district of Moscow, and follow our character, Pyotr, as he leaves his friends and ventures out into the night on his scooter and under the passing lights of the city streets as he is baited into a dangerous scenario at the sprawling apartment of a member of one of Moscow’s financial elite.

If you’re still not completely sold on Blake Mawson’s PYOTR495, then have a look at the embedded trailer. You’ll also find a handful of promotional images from the flick below.

Adi Shankar to Produce Live-Action Castlevania Miniseries

You gotta love Adi Shankar. His Bootleg Universe films give the fans what they want when they want in the way that they want it. So far we’ve had Venom, Judge Dredd, The Punisher, Power Rangers, and James Bond; and as he revealed in a Facebook post, Castlevania is next.

Breaking News: I’m producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It’s…

Posted by Adi Shankar on Tuesday, August 25, 2015

A Castlevania live-action adaptation has been floating around for years with names like Paul WS Anderson and James Wan attached at various stages. We don’t know for sure whether or not this will be an official adaptation, but it seems likely to be another Bootleg Universe project. Thank God.

Details are scarce so far, with the post being literally the only info we have, but with Konami killing the franchise slowly and painfully, I guess we have to thank Mr. Shankar for coming to the rescue. He’s just what we need.

First Look at Alan Mancuso’s Sharracuda

$

Since it’s currently all the rage to combine sharks with just about every possible creature on the planet (I’m still waiting for Slothshark, so please take that idea and run with it), it’s not altogether surprising that someone decided to combine a shark with a barracuda. Enter producer/director Alan Mancuso’s Sharracuda, a film which finds mankind dealing with the aforementioned monstrosity. Like it or not, this thing should arrive on one format or another next year.

What sets this flick apart from its contemporaries is its soundtrack. Mancuso and company are obviously really big fans of rock music, and they’ve assembled a number of underground death metal, hardcore, punk, doom, and stoner bands from all over the planet to help out with the movie. So even if you hate Sharracuda, at least you might enjoy the kick-ass soundtrack.

Need a story? Well, Sharracuda has that, too (via Facebook).

A small coastal town is suddenly attacked by a giant mutated shark. Three young metalheads, an unusual priest and a weird marine biologist decide to throw themselves in the pursuit of the creature with heavy artillery, blessed weapons and fierce fight. Is the monster an aberration caused by pollution, a government experiment or is he the manifestation of Satan? Who cares: The hunt is on!

To keep us occupied until the finished product finally arrives, the filmmakers have unleashed a short clip that gives the world its first look at the titular monster. There’s also some concept art lurking below, which gives prospective fans a more colorful idea of what Mancuso is putting together.

Knock Knock Releases Two New Alluring Posters

Keanu Reeves learns that temptation often has dire consequences in direction Eli Roth’s upcoming thriller Knock Knock. To entice moviegoers to spend their hard-earned cash on Roth’s latest cinematic endeavor, Lionsgate (via IMDb) have unveiled two sexy new posters that give you an idea of who Reeves is up against in the flick. You can see why he answers the door.

Before we get to the posters, let’s give the synopsis another look.

Evan Webber (Reeves) is living the dream. Just look at his beautiful, successful wife; his two wonderful kids; and his truly stunning house—which he designed himself. Of course he did. Things are going so well, Evan doesn’t even mind spending Father’s Day alone while the rest of his family heads out for a beach weekend. And then there’s a knock on the door.

The two young women (Izzo, de Armas) standing on Evan’s doorstep are where Evan’s dream takes a nightmarish turn. Given co-writer/director Eli Roth’s well-deserved reputation for creating cinematic discomfort, it should come as no surprise what happens next: Things get weird and then dark and then much, much, much darker. But this is no splatter film so Roth keeps the horror nice and psychological as Evan’s life—and house—get ripped apart, piece by beautiful piece.

Lionsgate Premiere will release Knock Knock in select theaters and across VOD platforms on October 9, 2015. Take a moment to appreciate the posters for Eli Roth’s thriller below.

Anne Hathaway To Produce and Star In Alien Invasion Comedy The Shower

With her Godzilla inspired comedy Colossal presumably being halted by Toho due to copyright issues, it’s refreshing to know that Anne Hathaway isn’t about to give up on our genre just yet.

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that she’ll star in The Shower, about a meteor shower that turns men into bloodthirsty monsters, so naturally, it’s up to the women to save the day.

Hathaway will produce alongside her husband Adam Shulman, Andrew Lauren, D.J. Gugenheim and the writer, Jac Schaeffer. A director has not yet been announced.

Hathaway had the following to say about The Shower:

“Jac has written an awesome sci-fi comedy centered around funny, fully dimensional female characters, I feel so lucky to be a part of the team that will bring her enormously talented and fresh voice to the big screen.”

With the alien invasion sub-genre becoming tired as of late, so this interesting play of the sexes will certainly help to make it fresh again.

We Are Still Here to Haunt DVD and Blu-ray

One of the best damned horror films of the year, We Are Still Here (review) is on its way to DVD and Blu-ray via Dark Sky Films and we have your details and artwork right here!

From the Press Release
A tragic death leaves a married couple devastated, but their misery soon turns into mortal fear in the thoroughly haunting new film WE ARE STILL HERE. The Dark Sky Films/MPI theatrical release, from the producers of The House of the Devil and Cheap Thrills, comes to Blu-ray and DVD on October 6, 2015.

WE ARE STILL HERE is an atmospheric, classically constructed haunted house story, but with modern, heightened tension and action. After their teenage son Bobby is killed in a car crash, Paul and Anne Sacchetti move to an isolated 19th-century house in the New England countryside to try to start a new life. But soon the grieving couple begin to sense they are not alone in the old house. The Sacchettis’ psychic friend May arrives to investigate Anne’s hopeful feeling that Bobby’s spirit is also there.

Unknowingly, the Sacchettis become the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town is hiding a terrifyingly dark secret. Now they must find a way to overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls – and the soul of their lost son – into hell with them.

The cast of the MPI/Dark Sky Films theatrical release includes horror icon Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, You’re Next), Andrew Sensenig (Upstream Color, The Last Exorcism Part II), actor-filmmaker Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, Stake Land, You’re Next) and Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood). The film marks the directorial debut of Ted Geoghegan, writer of Indie horror favorites Sweatshop and Barricade, a producer of the anthology film The ABCs of Death 2. The atmospheric cinematography is by Karim Hussain (Antiviral, Hobo With a Shotgun). Features on the discs include a Behind the Scenes look featuring writer/director Ted Geoghegan and producer Travis Stevens discussing the genesis of the project and the challenges and successes of bringing the script to life.

WE ARE STILL HERE had its world premiere as an official selection at SXSW 2015 and it has achieved a remarkable 93% review rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Will make you scream and make you laugh, and possibly leave you speechlessly gesticulating at a charred zombielike ghost in the background,” said Helen T. Verongos of The New York Times. Steve Barton of Dread Central called it “the first incredibly scary and pure horror film of 2015. There’s just nothing out there like it, and there hasn’t been in quite some time.” The film “works on multiple levels; new horror fans will enjoy the thrills and chills, while experienced horror nuts will delight in the clever twists on an old formula,” said Peter Martin of Fandango. Patrick Cooper of Bloody Disgusting called it”a masterfully crafted slow creeper that knows when to ratchet up the tension and release.”

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil Getting Remastered

The games Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil for the N64, about the titular Native-American warrior going up against pre-historic creatures, are often cited as two of the finest examples of early first person shooters.

Aside from a disappointing 2008 reboot, the series has been mostly MIA lately. So thank you Night Dive Studios for the welcome news that they will be remastering the first two games for PC.

“When Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was first released it was nothing short of revolutionary,” Night Dive Studios CEO Stephen Kick said. “To that point, no game had ever offered the combination of graphics and an open world environment that Turok featured. We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring this great franchise back to life and to be able to share these great titles with today’s gaming audience.”

They’ll be available via Steam, the Humble Bundle store, Good Old Games, GamersGate, Greenman Gaming, and via the Night Dive Studios website. All I can say is that it’s about damn time. Not long now before we can blast dinosaurs away in HD.

New Video Shows off Horizon: Zero Dawn’s Amazing Landscape Effects

The PS4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn, from Killzone developer Guerrilla Games, has been getting a lot of buzz for it’s amazing graphics, but what’s even more interesting is the dynamic weather system.

As shown in a new video at the SIGGRAPH 2015 presentation, the weather and the sky will change constantly in the open world game – just like in real life – to make the player feel as though they are in a real, living breathing world where they can travel long distances and everything can change at any given time.

Wow. Just wow. If I didn’t already know that it was from a game, I’d swear that I was watching a live-action video. We may still be a long way off from complete photo-realism in games, but still, just look at it!

The games principal VFX artist Andrew Schneider had the following to say about how this system differs from the studio’s Killzone games:

“FPS usually restrict the player to a predefined track, which means that we could hand place elements like clouds using billboards and highly detailed sky domes to create a heavily art directed sky.”

The game has been in development for four years and follows Aloy, a woman trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with giant mechanical monstrosities.

First-Person Zombie Flick 6:15 Bites Down on a New Clip

If you’re going to do a zombie movie these days, you’d better deliver something original. And while Gregg Hale and Eduardo Sanchez used a similar gimmick in their V/H/S 2 segment “A Ride in the Park,” brothers Ben and Oliver Samuels are taking the first-person POV zombie apocalypse and stretching it into a full-length feature. And honestly, it looks pretty damn good.

Proudly produced without Hollywood’s help and sporting some really effective practical effects, the Samuels brothers’ upcoming endeavor 6:15 puts horror fans in the shoes of someone who is desperately trying to make it through waves of the zombies without getting a pair of rotting undead teeth sunk into their flesh. Even if you’re tired of seeing the walking dead savagely chow down on the human race, this one looks a few steps above your typical zombie fare.

6:15 stars Montana Marks (Camp Dread), Amy Rutledge (The Neighbor), Matt Riker, Rosebud Baker (Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys), and Canadian MuchMusic VJ Bradford How. For a taste of what’s to come from this one-take, real-time horror flick, investigate the clip below.

Angel Martinez Wants to Make a Horror Movie, But He Needs Your Help

For us at Dread Central, passion, determination, and perseverance go a very, very long way. So when we got word that Angel Martinez, one of our readers, wanted to get started in the world of filmmaking, we decided to give the guy a helping hand. The enthusiasm this guy displays is infectious, and we hope you’ll considering kicking a few coins in his direction.

Here’s what Martinez hopes to accomplish in the very near future.

I am an aspiring film maker in San Antonio with dreams of being the most successful independent film maker of all time. I will also love to have my own studio so other film makers from all over the world can create and share their passion and art outside the normal Hollywood realm. I want to make a healthy living off of what I love to do: Creating. As of right now, that’s all I have is my dreams. I have written over 30 screenplays (12 of those hand written) already but they don’t mean anything if I don’t have the tools needed to bring my paper vision to reality. I continue to write whatever comes to mind. Nothing I ever do is mindless and that includes what I put on paper. I can’t sell them or bring them to life because I don’t own a computer. (using my works). I have a tablet but can’t do what I need to do there either. The money would go to a computer, camera and for the actual movie itself. Trust me, I figured the budget out already. :) The success I seek is not one of selfishness or greed. I want to give back to my community AND to the entire world. I want filmmakers from around the globe to have another place to share their visions, enhance their creativity and hone their skills (writing, camera, film. etc). 15 years without my own computer is a long time and I feel this is my only chance in getting one that I NEED not want. Thank you in advance!

Twelve hand-written screenplays? My fingers cramp at the very thought of such a task. If you’d like to help out Angel Martinez, take a trip to the guy’s GoFundMe page and toss him a donation.

Dick Maas’ Prey Unleashes Its First Batch of Images

Although Dick Maas originally started planning his killer lion flick Prey way back in 2013, he didn’t get the ball rolling until this year. If you’ve been biting your nails waiting for the first images from the movie to coming roaring across the internet, it’s finally time to give your bloody fingers a rest.

Below are the first five images from Maas’ Prey, which will likely arrive in the States on one format or another a some point next year. This is just an extremely wild guess on my part, of course, since no one has announced an official release date as of this writing.

While you’re waiting for more snazzy images or a proper trailer to arrive, busy yourself with this impossibly lengthy synopsis. Who knew a killer lion movie needed such a long description?

When the police discover the bodies of a slaughtered family living on a farm just outside of Amsterdam, they are clueless as to what happened. Lizzy, an attractive veterinarian working in the Amsterdam Zoo, confirms their suspicions; there must be a lion on the loose! And judging by the wounds of the mutilated victims, the lion must be big, strong and vicious!

Several more gruesome attacks follow and Lizzy is convinced there is a maneater roaming the streets of Amsterdam. She has trouble, however, convincing the authorities of the danger. When they finally set up a press conference to warn the public of the danger, their statement is met with disbelief. No one has seen the lion, and there is not much evidence of its existence. The public’s disbelief disappears when the lion goes on a murder spree in a streetcar full of people.

After a disastrous failed attempt by the nephew of the chief of police to hunt down and kill the lion, a friend of Lizzy’s, a famous English lion hunter, is flown in.
The police are stunned to see that the man has only one leg and is confined to a wheelchair. Slowly their worries disappear when the man seems to know what he is talking about and the power wheelchair, equipped with snowmobile tracks, makes him almost as fast as a speeding lion.

Still, the authorities are not convinced of the lion hunter’s skills. They send in an Army squad, but their mission ends in more bloodshed – albeit not the lion’s.

Finally the lion hunter gets permission to hunt down the lion in his own way. He succeeds in tracking down the lion to a University building and with Lizzy’s help he manages to kill the beast, losing his life in the process. When Lizzy accompanies her deceased friend in an ambulance to the hospital, the lion has one more surprise up his sleeve…
