Back in the Eighties some cool cover art was all we needed to get us to rent a VHS tape and run home excited. True, more often than not the artwork was not at all reflective of the content, but we still didn't regret it. In fact, I remember renting Mortuary dozens of times for the box art alone.

From the Press Release
On May 15th Scorpion Releasing, in conjunction with Camelot Entertainment, presents MORTUARY! Bill Paxton, Christopher George, and Lynda Day George star in this chilling tale of horror-filled nightmares that comes startlingly close to reality! Christie Parson (Mary McDonough) has been having terrifying nightmares ever since her father drowned in the family swimming pool. She knows his death was not an accident, but no one believes her. That is, until her boyfriend, Greg (David Wallace), sees a hooded figure, identical to the one that Christie has described as being in her nightmares, in the town's mortuary. But is it real, or is it all in Christie's mind?

Special Features:

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 3

"Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast."

"Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home." - The Stand

"The beauty of religious mania is that it has the power to explain everything. Once God (or Satan) is accepted as the first cause of everything which happens in the mortal world, nothing is left to chance...logic can be happily tossed out the window.” — The Stand

"The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." — The Dark Tower Book I: The Gunslinger

"Go then, there are other worlds than these." — The Dark Tower Series

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 3

I could literally go on with these quotes all day. We've covered Stephen King's early years with a Scalpel and then focused on his incredibly productive 1980s; now we will wrap up the Tip of the Scalpel Stephen King series with A Tip of the Scalpel to Stephen King (Final Sequence): The Epics. And by The Epics we mean arguably King's most amazing works, The Stand and The Dark Tower series.

The Stand is one of the most incredibly thorough and all-encompassing post-apocalyptic tales ever created, due mostly to the fact that the story begins before the outbreak occurs and shows you exactly the moment society began to break down and then takes you through the fall and resurrection of society. Larry Underwood and Tom Cullen and Stuart Bateman…Nadie Cross and Harold Lauder…Lloyd Heinreid, The Trashcan Man and, of course, the one character that ties both The Stand and The Dark Tower together, Randall Flagg. Although Flagg may not be the apotheosis of evil, he's definitely an incredibly powerful malevolent force, who just happens to be extremely charming and incredibly interesting for the readers. He's truly King's greatest character, and readers are lucky enough to enjoy him in both of King's epic tales.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 3

The Stand was originally published in 1978 and re-released in the 90s in an uncut version with chilling illustrations by Bernie Wrightson. It is indeed King's finest work. Taking us right from the doomed military base which spawned Captain Tripps, through the most incredible adventure, seeing death and devastation, seeing life thrive and humanity shine and seeing a force of pure evil intent on finishing what it started. I personally cannot think of a more all-encompassing, emotionally charged and simply perfect piece of horror writing. As you read about the survivors in Colorado you can feel the ominous presence of Flagg and his growing army ready to strike at any time and vaporize our brave pilgrims.

But as huge as The Stand is as King's largest work in a single volume, The Dark Tower series dwarfs it by comparison. The work currently contains seven books with an eighth to be released on April 24. The newest chapter of the story is entitled The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole and although it is the latest addition to the saga, the subject matter of the book puts it between volumes four and five, making this a return to Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy in their prime, and not an extension of the story, which, those of you who are familiar with the absolutely perfect ending of the tale will attest, is basically impossible. The Stand takes you on a journey of loss and redemption, where The Dark Tower shows you an entire life. The life of The Gunslinger, Roland of Gilead.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 3

How a writer could even sit down and begin to take on a project like The Dark Tower series boggles the mind. Thousands of pages that cross multiple dimensions with dozens of characters (including the author himself who addresses his own demons in tale). As a reader, by the time you finish The Dark Tower story, you are almost left breathless, missing the characters that you had spent so much time with, but appreciating the perfect ending King conjured for the story. Vampires, witches, burnings, lobstrosities, mafia hitmen and Roland's own son are just a few of the ferocious evils our wanderers must confront during their incredible trek to discover the Dark Tower and the secrets that lie within. As a reader you fall in love with the stories and the characters, as a writer, you sit with your mouth hanging open, trying to fathom just how someone could create such a massive and beautiful story.

Throughout his legendary career, Stephen King has created stories and characters that have haunted our dreams, that have inspired us, frightened us and intrigued us. However it is with his two largest works, The Stand and The Dark Tower series that he has done his most impressive work. With the incredible Randall Flagg as a cornerstone of evil in both of the works, these two epic tales continue to this day to be the titles often named when a King fan is asked their favorite story by the amazing scribe.

We've looked at the beginning, the most prolific and the most incredible parts of the career of the greatest horror writer of our time. It is without hesitation and for one final time in this series that we grant a huge Tip of Doctor Gash's Scalpel to Stephen King: The Epics.

An Exclusive TV Spot for The Raven Comes Tap-Tap-Tapping at our Chamber Door

    0

Time for our third exclusive goodie of the day to take you through your afternoon into what will hopefully be a blissfully insane Friday night. Speaking of insanity... check out the madness of this new TV spot for The Raven!

Look for James McTeigue's The Raven starring John Cusack, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson on April 27th, 2012.

The Raven begins with Poe arriving in Baltimore as a serial killer is terrorizing the city, using the writer’s stories as the inspiration for his crimes. Poe is a suspect at first, but he eventually joins forces with a police inspector to solve the crimes and save the woman he loves.

    Synopsis
In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Exclusive Set Coverage and Photos - Dread Central Visits a Zombie Family

    $
    0
    0

Arriving to a postcard perfect California bungalow in West Hollywood this past Monday, April 16th, I was already privy to the undead horrors I’d find inside, although I doubt the surrounding neighbors were aware that courtesy of filmmaker Joseph Weisman a Zombie Family had moved in.

Shooting day four of six of the intended horror/comedy web series Zombie Family, writer and director Weisman took time between filming a scene (in which a pubescent zombie finds some ‘alone time’ in the home’s bathroom to peruse the ‘Kill of the Month’ centerfold in Homicide Girl Magazine) to chat with us regarding the project, as did associate producer and makeup effects lead Frank Ippolito, actress Cerina Vincent, and more.

“I wrote a feature screenplay called Zombie Family about seven years ago,” filmmaker Weisman stated of the evolution of the project, which would go on to attract the talents of producers Justin Kommann and Brian Rowe and director of photography Brian Mulchy, “and in 2008 it placed in the Horror Screenplay contest and received ‘Honorable Mention.’ I guess it made the judges’ table there, which I thought was funny because it’s a comedy and not a scary movie, although it does have gore and zombies.”

“I kind of saw an opportunity once web entities like FEARnet started producing their own content to take the material that I really loved and wanted to make, and to do it in a format that could really exploit it the most,” he continued. “I want to give an audience the most comedy for the concept.”

Zombie Family features Mike Apple as ‘Bill’ (the zombie patriarch), actress Laura Napoli as ‘Betty’ (the unit's undead matriarch) and Chuck Lines as ‘Erwin’ and Allison Sharpe as ‘Amanda’ as the pair's teenage, zombie offspring. Actors Kerry O’Quinn, Doug Jones, Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Tony Todd (Candyman) and Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever) round out the cast.

Chatting with Apple, who at the time was in full zombie regalia, the actor stated of the lure of Zombie Family, “Combining the genres of science fiction, horror and comedy appealed to me. So did the concept of having a family of zombies trying to co-exist in the normal world with normal people, people who seemingly don’t notice that they are zombies, which is just a very funny concept, and it’s been fun to play around with.”

“I’ve definitely been a fan of the zombie genre,” Napoli chimed in. “I actually did a zombie video game before, so I have had the opportunity to be zombiefied, but not with full-on makeup, which has been absolutely awesome. To have the fuzzy contacts and the prosthetics, it’s a whole other experience, and that’s been fun to add that dynamic to it. The whole effects team has been awesome.”

Of the effects, we took a moment to speak with Ippolito, whose practical work has been seen in the short films Dracula’s Daughter vs. Space Brains and The Night of the Little Dead (both of which he directed), among others, as they were in season one of the Syfy reality series "Face Off".

“A friend of mine (Komman) and I worked on The ABC’s of Death, where we did (the segment) 'T is for Tranny', and I did his makeup for it,” said Ippolito of how he became involved with Zombie Family. “We ended up getting along really well, and he was like, ‘Hey, I might be working on this web series. Want to come meet the director?’ So I met Joseph at Screamfest and we hit it off, and he asked me to do the makeup effects. Before you knew it, I was also an associate producer because I pulled in most of the rest of the crew: the vanity department, the line producer, etc. So I became a little bit pivotal on this one, and it worked out really nice.”

In creating the character make-ups for the titular family, “I brought in Ian Cromer from the second season of 'Face Off' and his girlfriend Alana Schiro to help with the builds,” continued Ippolito, “and they worked with me pretty much for about a month working on all of the sculptures and molds and everything, and here we are.”

Of the look of his zombies, “I don’t view it as redefining anything, just more what the zombie needs to be in this story,” Ippolito offered. “I didn’t want to make them too gory because they are supposed to be a family, and I made the prosthetics really thin so that they can still emote through them, and I gave each of the sculptures a little bit of a character. I made the mom and the son look a little similar, and the same with the dad and the daughter. The daughter’s makeup is the most subtle. We wanted to keep her cute and attractive and her little ‘punk rock’ self. So it was about doing it well because there are a lot of bad zombie make-ups out there, and I wanted to do it competently.”

Art Director Mike Cavanaugh joined the fold at that moment and offered us a look at not only the previously mentioned Homicide Girl Magazine, which he’d created with Nick Bonamy, but also at ‘Scrahhhhble,’ the board game he’d commissioned artist Dave Leamon to create, which the zombie family plays in a scene or two in the series.

“He’s been pulling it off!” gushed Ippolito of Cavanaugh’s art direction. “He came up with the concept of that game, where all of the letters are r’s and a’s, as in, ‘Aaarrr’!’ The zombies also had to fry up some brains in the kitchen so I made a silicone brain, and we covered it with slime and stuff and they put it in the pan, and then Mike got tripe and cut it up, and we were cooking it in soy so they could actually eat it.”

Catching up with actress Sharpe, who had nabbed the role following a traditional audition, she stated of her character in Zombie Family, “Amanda is a little lost. She's trying to blend in with the rest of the non-zombie world the best she possibly can, which, to be honest, isn't very good. She's a punk rock princess just trying to be cute, and she's dying literally to fit in at school. She's just kid a kid though, you know? Acting out, making friends, being a little rebel. But she's also a big family girl.”

“At home they're just like any ordinary family,” Sharpe stated of the family’s dynamic. “They sit down at the dinner table together, get into little riffs and play board games together. We're all on the same page and we know that we have to protect our identity as zombies so we support each other on that.”

Does Sharpe find it difficult balancing the comedy and horror of Zombie Family?

“Not at all, actually,” she replied. “I'm a huge fan of dark comedy and of slapstick comedy, and this whole series is basically a chaotic mixture of the two. Comedy and horror are such opposites when it comes to genre, that when one moment of horror is altered with a comedic intention, it can make practically anything transform from scary to silly.”

A zombie needs a foil, however, and in this case they come in the form of actors Todd (who portrays ‘Principal McGuffy), Bannister (the neighborhood cop), Jones (the unlucky salesman) and Vincent, who appears as ‘Cindy Apple,’ the annoying next-door neighbor.

“Think saccharin-sweet Stepford wife meets a nosy neighbor,” said actress Vincent of her character. “It’s a really funny role, and I’m really getting into it.”

Complimenting Vincent on her knack for comedy (her turns in that genre include roles in the series "Mike & Molly" and the feature Not Another Teen Movie, among others), she said humbly, “Thank you! Yes, I do feel like comedy is my strength, and I’m absolutely using that in Zombie Family. I’ve had a blast being over-the-top and annoying. I gave Cindy Apple a really obnoxious voice and mannerisms, and Joey wrote a great role and it’s a joy to play. I’m looking forward to doing more with this crazy character, that is, if Cindy Apple doesn't end up dinner for the zombie family. She’s so annoying, if I were a zombie, I'd eat me too.”

So when can we expect to see Zombie Family?

“We are looking at probably two to three weeks to edit and to do sound,” concluded director Weisman of post-production, “so we should have everything together by the end of May, hopefully. It’s exciting. And we are in negotiations right now for distribution.”

Stay tuned for more on Zombie Family, and in the interim stay up-to-date by checking them out on Facebook here and Frank Ippolito here.

Frankenstein's Army: Behold Another Implement of Destruction

Another delightfully disturbing bit of goodness has come our way from the now shooting Frankenstein's Army. Never let it be said that horror films aren't always there to lend you a hand when you need it!

On the Dutch website Horror.nl, they report that the film will have a theatrical release in the UK and its world premiere in Toronto. Even better? There will be no CGI effects, and from what we're hearing, the movie will be way over-the-top. Below you'll find an image of a mechanized zombie arm. Oh the joy! Thanks to DC reader Tump for the heads-up and translation!

The Czech shoot, portraying Viktor Frankenstein's efforts to turn around German fortunes by animating super soldiers from the body parts of the fallen, is Richard Raaphorst's helming debut and is before cameras right now (how we love saying that).

Karel Roden (The Abandoned, Hellboy, A Lonely Place to Die) plays mad Nazi scientist Viktor, and the flick also features Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass), Joshua Sasse (The Big I Am), Luke Newberry (The Heart of Me), Andrei Zayats (X-Men: First Class), and Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element).

Frankenstein's Army takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein's work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades - a desperate Hitler's last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

Lobo Finally Coming to the Big Screen

In the world of sometimes needless comic book adaptations, there have been two absolute sins. One - the fact that we're still waiting on a good movie based upon Spawn and two - DC Comics' Lobo hasn't gotten any love. Thankfully one of those two things is about to change.

According to Deadline, Brad Peyton, who helmed the global hit Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, has just been set by Warner Bros. to rewrite and direct Lobo, the live-action film based on the DC Comics franchise. Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are producing.

Lobo is an alien that works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Introduced as a hardened, rarely used hard-boiled villain in the 1980s, the character remained in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s, when he became one of the most popular characters in the DC Comics stable.

The character also appeared in a short film played by Andrew Bryniarski (Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake), but something tells us he won't be reprising that role anytime soon. Check out the short below.

The Dibbuk Box is Opened in the First Image from The Possession

Finally after a couple of years we have something to show you from The Possession (formerly known as The Dibbuk Box)! Get ready to go rigid with the first still from the upcoming Sam Raimi produced flick!

Back in November the filmmakers went before the MPAA and were slapped with an R rating for "violence, terror, and disturbing images." They appealed the decision, but their cries fell on deaf ears. Probably because the members of the MPAA forgot to re-up the batteries for their hearing aids.

Well, fast forward a couple of months, insert a couple of cuts, and now The Possession has finally been granted a PG-13 rating, meaning it can reach a broader audience than it could have with an R.

That's right, kids; the flick is now PG-13 for "mature thematic material involving violence and disturbing sequences." Whatever the hell that means. I swear these cats just make things up as they go along.

Look for Ole Bornedal's The Possession starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport, and Natasha Calis in theatres on August 31st, 2012.

    Synopsis
A recently divorced father's (Morgan) youngest daughter becomes strangely connected to an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. As his daughter's behavior becomes more erratic, the father senses a dark presence building until he discovers that the box was built to contain a dibbuk -- a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.
