Jordan Peele to Write and Direct Get Out for Blumhouse

0
0

Most people know Jordan Peele from “Key and Peele” and “MADtv,” but the funnyman is looking to stretch his legs a bit with the upcoming horror flick Get Out. According to Deadline, Peele will write and direct the movie for the folks over at Blumhouse. The film tells the story of an African-American guy who takes a trip to his Caucasian girlfriend’s estate. Things get creepy from there.

Instead of delivering a brain-dead horror movie, Peele wants to create something a little different. Expect Get Out to tackle a subject matter that doesn’t find its way to the genre these days.

“People know me for my work in comedy, but now I’ll get to focus on my passion for writing and directing horror films. Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way. Get Out takes on the task of exploring race in America, something that hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night of the Living Dead 47 years ago. It’s long overdue,” Peele explained in a statement about the flick.

QC Entertainment and Blumhouse Productions are co-producing Get Out. As of this writing, it’s unknown when Jordan Peele’s horror flick will terrorize the big screen.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Unearths a New Trailer

Ahead of its release on Xbox platforms, a cinematic trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider has debuted. The game finds Lara Croft searching for the mythical city of Kitezh, which allegedly holds the secret to immortality.

Series creators Crystal Dynamics are handling development, and Rihanna Pratchett, daughter of the late fantasy legend Sir Terry Pratchett, returns for story duties.

The Storm Guard from the last game were friggin’ awesome so I’m looking forward to seeing the monsters that Lara will face on this adventure.

“What makes someone rich beyond the boundaries of human experience? It is these pioneers who define the future of mankind,” says the sombre voiceover. I hope that he wasn’t referring to the Microsoft executives who tried to make the game exclusive to their systems.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released on November 10, 2015, on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and it arrives next year on PS4 and PC.

Want to Open a Gateway to Hell? All You Need Is Science

0
0

According to countless movies and books I’ve watched and read over the years, the way to properly open a gateway to Hell is through incantations, ancient texts, and human sacrifices, among other things. The last thing you’d expect is for scientists to figure out a way to channel the world of the damned through chemical reactions. I feel like my whole life is a lie.

All joking aside, the following video explores what happens when you combine ammonium dichromate (the orange powder) with heat. According to IFL Science, “It forms nitrogen gas, water, and ammonium (III) oxide, which is the dark powder that looks like the volcano you see.” The end result is nothing short of fascinating, as you can see from the embedded video.

IFL Science explains things a bit more in-depth:

What appears to be tentacles is actually what happens when heat is introduced to mercury (II) thiocyanate. The white solid expands when it’s heated to become a dark, tentacle-like mass due to its decomposition to carbon nitride. In addition, sulfur dioxide and mercury (II) sulfide are also produced. The reaction is appropriately nicknamed the “Pharoah’s Serpent” and was sold in stores as fireworks until people realized it’s toxic.

Take a look at the video below for a pretty wicked example of science in motion.

The Enfield Haunting Scares Up Domestic Run on A&E

While all eyes are currently on James Wan and his telling of the Enfield Poltergeist case in The Conjuring 2, A&E has scored the domestic broadcast rights to the UK miniseries based upon the real life case of “The Enfield Haunting,” which will premiere this October (exact date to be determined).

Starring an award-winning cast and crew, the three-part series is based on the real events that occurred in that ordinary house in Enfield in 1977. Adapted from Guy Lyon Playfair’s book This House Is Haunted and drawing on extensive documentation, recordings, and witness statements of the time, the show brings to life the phenomenon that remains to this day the most documented account of poltergeist activity in British history.

The stellar cast is comprised of Timothy Spall, OBE, recently bestowed the Best Actor accolade at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival for his role in Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner, BAFTA-winning actor Matthew Macfadyen, and BAFTA-nominated actress Juliet Stevenson. They are joined by Olivier Award-winning young actress Eleanor Worthington-Cox in the lead role of Janet Hodgson, the youngest daughter of Peggy Hodgson, played by British actress Rosie Cavaliero.

Kristoffer Nyholm, widely acclaimed for his work on the global hit drama “The Killing,” directed from Joshua St. Johnston’s screenplay.

Initial Cast Announced for Toho’s Shin Godzilla; First Plot Details!

0
0

Oh yes… With each passing day we take comfort in the fact right now Toho is filming its own Godzilla film entitled Shin Gojira. Speaking of which, we have the first bit of casting news and plot details for you.

Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara are the first actors announced that are in danger of being stomped upon.

The good folks over at the Gormaru Island Facebook page have translated the following article which is home to the first plot and character details. Note:  We took what they translated and shaped it into sentences that actually make sense.

Shin Gojira

Shin Gojira takes place in modern-day Japan, which has suffered an attack by the Big G. It isn’t long until the United States gets involved in the chaos as a means to try to help.

For the cast, the choice to join Shin Gojira was an unnerving one as everyone felt intense pressure given how big of an icon Godzilla is. However, upon reading the script by Hideaki Anno and his directing and writing partner Shinji Higuchi, everyone decided to sign up for active duty.

Japanese actor Hiromi Hasegawa is the male lead character. Hasegawa’s character is an honest and straightforward kind of guy.

Yutaka Takenouchi plays the role of a Japanese government official who’s seen his country devastated. In the article Takenouchi states that this 29th Godzilla film, like the 1954 film, will be one of the strongest Godzilla entries into the series.

Satomi Ishihara plays a U.S. Agent and the heroine in the movie. Apparently, Ishihara herself shed tears while reading the script for Shin Godzilla at home. She went on to say that the pressure weighs even heavier on her because as the heroine of a Godzilla film, she feels greatly responsible to deliver the best performance she possibly can.

New Godzilla Actors

The article also goes on to say that Godzilla (2014) has set the height bar of the creature at 108 meters, but Shin Gojira is expected to exceed that, thereby becoming the largest incarnation of Godzilla to date.

Executive producer Yamauchi confirms that Shin Gojira IS the official movie title. As the title indicates, Shin Gojira is meant to be an expression of resurrecting the true Godzilla. This Godzilla will invoke the fear of God into everyone whose path he comes across, a testament to the “God” part of his namesake.

Co-writer/co-director Hideaki Anno states that the film’s title will also have a variety of meanings given the feelings that everyone invested into both the icon Godzilla and the film itself. Shin Gojira started production on August 10th, shooting in the Kanato suburbs of Japan, and plans are to complete filming at the end of October.

Shin Gojira will release in summer 2016.

So what of everyone’s favorite Daywalker? Can he overcome the tepid mess that was Blade: Trinity? Is Marvel even interested in bringing back Wesley Snipes as Blade? Apparently so.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Snipes dropped the following update pertaining to the possibility of another film…

“There’s always a possibility, you know. It’s in Marvel’s hands. They’re controlling the pace and the flow with that. Conversations have been good. They see the value in it. We see the value in it. I’m still in shape enough and fit enough to handle the role. We’ll see how it goes. I don’t really know what’s going to happen to it yet.”

Looks like we’re not gonna get a definitive answer any time soon. File this one under believe it when we see it.

Osgood “Oz” Perkins (son of Psycho‘s Anthony) is making quite a name for himself in the horror genre.  His directorial debut, February, was recently snapped up by A24 and DirecTV; and now he’s already announcing his next project, which also sits firmly within our beloved genre. Read on for the first word on I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House.

Per Deadline, Perkins (pictured below) will write and direct I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House, which his February partner Rob Paris’ Paris Film, Inc., will produce and co-finance through a recently announced venture with Robert Menzies’ Ottawa-based production shingle Zed Filmworks and Canadian real estate developer Alphonse Ghossein’s Go Insane Films.

Pretty Thing is about a young nurse named Lily who is hired as caretaker for an elderly best-selling author of ghost stories as she lives out her final days in her beloved country home. The only problem is that the home is host to a horrific ghost story of its own.

Casting is under way to bring the project before cameras in the spring of 2016. Paris and Menzies will produce, and Ghossein will executive produce. Paradigm, which reps Perkins, will handle North American rights. Paris will oversee acquisitions and packaging in Los Angeles, while Menzies will run point in Ottawa and oversee all aspects of physical production.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to continue our collaboration with Osgood,” Paris and Menzies said. “February was as good an experience as we’ve ever had. And Pretty Thing is exactly what we’re looking for in our new venture – a smart, commercial, and elegant filmmaker-driven story that will attract top talent.”

Stay tuned – we should have more for you soon!

Silent Hills Is Alive on Kickstarter. Kind of.

0

After Konami lost its mind and fired Hideo Kojima, causing Silent Hills, which he was collaborating on with Guillermo del Toro, to be cancelled, it seemed to fans that the franchise was truly dead. You cannot count the insufferable arcade game as part of the series, can you?

As time went by, Konami went more and more crazy, as evidenced by the recent announcement that the company plans to halt all production of AAA games save for Pro Evolution Soccer, thereby indicating that its executives have had frontal lobotomies.

It’s a good thing for us that the fans have refused to just lay dormant and let the injustices continue.

We reported in May that fans were planning to make Allison Road, which would basically be their own version of Silent Hills. Now it’s gone live on Kickstarter and in less that 24 hours has already reached over a quarter of its £250,000 goal.

And while it won’t resemble Silent Hills exactly, as it will be made for a fraction of the budget and because we’ll never know what Kojima and del Toro had planned, let’s just take a moment to be thankful that we will, at least in some form, be getting the game that we wanted so badly.

Unless of course, Konami intervenes and tries to shut down Allison Road or, even worse, tries to profit from it. I wouldn’t put it past them, seeing how loose their grip on reality seems to have become lately. As video game critic Jim Sterling brilliantly put it, FucKonami.

We Are Still Here and Hungry in Japan! Om Nom Nom Nom!

0
0

Sometimes things can get WAY lost in translation. Such is the case for the Japanese release of We Are Still Here (review), the highly impressive directorial debut of Ted Geoghegan.

You see, the powers-that-be in the Far East apparently think the movie is about a house that eats people (or maybe a house where people go to eat?), as evidenced by the title there, which roughly translates to The Eating House. They are so convinced of this that the whole “eating” thing even made its way into the film’s synopsis, which we present to you below in all of its seemingly famished glory!

After their teenage son, Bobby, is killed in a car crash, Paul and Anne Sacchetti move to an isolated 19th-century house in the New England countryside to try to start a new life. But soon the grieving couple begin to sense they are not alone in the old house. The Sacchettis’ psychic friend May arrives to investigate Anne’s hopeful feeling that Bobby’s spirit is also there.

Unknowingly, the Sacchettis become the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town is hiding a terrifyingly dark secret. Now they must find a way to overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls – and the soul of their lost son – into hell with them.

Om nom nom nom.

That’s right, “Om nom nom nom.” is listed in the synopsis! You just cannot make this shit up! Here’s the artwork. Thanks to Arrow for spotting this bit of hilarity!

We Are Still Here

Look for the film Stateside on DVD and Blu-ray on October 6th.

We Are Still Here US Release Details:
A tragic death leaves a married couple devastated, but their misery soon turns into mortal fear in the thoroughly haunting new film WE ARE STILL HERE. The Dark Sky Films/MPI theatrical release, from the producers of The House of the Devil and Cheap Thrills, comes to Blu-ray and DVD on October 6, 2015.

WE ARE STILL HERE is an atmospheric, classically constructed haunted house story, but with modern, heightened tension and action.

The cast of the MPI/Dark Sky Films theatrical release includes horror icon Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, You’re Next), Andrew Sensenig (Upstream Color, The Last Exorcism Part II), actor-filmmaker Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, Stake Land, You’re Next), and Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood). The film marks the directorial debut of Ted Geoghegan, writer of indie horror favorites Sweatshop and Barricade and a producer of the anthology film ABCs of Death 2. The atmospheric cinematography is by Karim Hussain (Antiviral, Hobo With a Shotgun). Features on the discs include a behind-the-scenes look featuring writer/director Ted Geoghegan and producer Travis Stevens discussing the genesis of the project and the challenges and successes of bringing the script to life.

WE ARE STILL HERE had its world premiere as an official selection at SXSW 2015 and it has achieved a remarkable 93% review rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Will make you scream and make you laugh, and possibly leave you speechlessly gesticulating at a charred zombielike ghost in the background,” said Helen T. Verongos of The New York Times. Steve Barton of Dread Central called it “the first incredibly scary and pure horror film of 2015. There’s just nothing out there like it, and there hasn’t been in quite some time.” The film “works on multiple levels; new horror fans will enjoy the thrills and chills, while experienced horror nuts will delight in the clever twists on an old formula,” said Peter Martin of Fandango. Patrick Cooper of Bloody Disgusting called it “a masterfully crafted slow creeper that knows when to ratchet up the tension and release.”

Rest in Peace: Mark and Debby Constantino

0
0

Tragedy struck the paranormal community today as sad news has just emerged from Nevada that EVP specialists Mark and Debby Constantino are no longer with us.

According to KTVN News, this morning Mark Constantino kidnapped his estranged wife, Debby, killing one of her roommates in the process. It began when a woman (another roommate of Debby) returned home around 8:00 am Tuesday, in the 2300 block of Escalera Court in North Reno, to find her male roommate dead. She called the Reno Police Department and also let them know that her other roommate, whom we can confirm was Debby Constantino, was missing and she was concerned for her safety.

As police investigated the death, they also worked to locate the missing woman. By pinging her cell phone, they found that Debby may have been at the Courtside Gardens Apartments near 15th Street and Oddie Boulevard in Sparks. When officers responded there, Mark began shooting at them through the door. Through negotiations, they discovered that Debby was inside and that she was being held hostage by her estranged husband. Sparks Police say that 53-year-old Mark Constantino is also suspected in the death at the North Reno home.

Negotiators from Reno and Sparks Police, along with the local FBI, attempted for several hours to get Constantino to surrender. Around 1:30 pm, Sparks Police said their SWAT team made entry into the home and found Constantino and his estranged wife, whom they say he kidnapped from the Reno location, dead inside the unit.

The Constantinos rose to notoriety by appearing on the Travel Channel series “Ghost Adventures,” where they were brought in multiple times to lend a hand in the team’s paranormal investigations.

At times like these, it’s kind of impossible to find the right words. Life has this nagging habit of never making sense and is often riddled with tragic situations. Yet, it’s through these tragedies that we truly learn to live. In these dark times we call upon each other for strength, and right now we here at Dread Central would like to offer our sincerest of condolences to the Constantinos’ friends, family, and constituents. We would also like to thank them for what they brought to the field of paranormal investigation and sincerely hope in the face of this awful situation they both have found some type of peace. You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

The Crow Reboot May Lose Director

0
0

Some say that a curse has been visited upon The Crow franchise, and if you need any proof of that, look no further than the several abysmal sequels that followed. My eyes are still burning from the last one. In terms of the remake, reboot, rewhateverthehellthisis, things aren’t faring much better behind the scenes.

According to The Wrap, director Corin Hardy is in danger of flying the coop as a result of the Relativity Media bankruptcy. The news comes from producer Edward R. Pressman, who on Tuesday filed an objection to the inclusion of the project among the studio’s assets as it prepares for a sale.

Relativity has invested “in excess of $7 million” in The Crow remake, including $2.5 million to exercise the options to acquire and maintain the property’s sequel, prequel and remake rights, according to the filing. Those rights revert back to Pressman if principal photography does not start within three years from when the deal was signed, which is now 18 months away.

Pressman filed the objection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York because he claims the stalking-horse bidder for Relativity’s film and TV assets hasn’t demonstrated “adequate assurance of future performance” and he’s concerned that Relativity’s new owner won’t immediately have the resources to finance the film and release it on “no less than 1,000 screens” in North America, which requires an investment of “no less than $10 million to $12 million.

The Crow is currently without a star, as Jack Huston exited the picture several months ago.
Now Pressman claims that he’s “in danger of losing the services of the director of the picture … who is widely regarded as a key creative element. Thus, the production of the picture is imploding even as the time to make the picture is running out under the Crow contract.

Several studios and well-financed producers have expressed interest in The Crow rights and some have even tried to negotiate a deal, but Relativity has turned down every offer for what may be the most valuable asset in its depleted development stable.

Pressman doesn’t want Relativity to be able to include The Crow rights in the imminent Relativity sale unless the stalking-horse bidder, made up of the company’s senior lenders, guarantees it will finance the project and release the finished film in theaters, as the contract stipulates.

A remake of Alex Proyas‘ 1994 classic action movie starring Brandon Lee and based on the graphic novel by James O’Barr, The Crow has been dealt one setback after another, and Relativity’s bankruptcy was just the latest blow to the project’s hopes.
