Brilliant WNUF Halloween Special Spawns Spinoff Record

Released in 2013, Chris Lamartina’s film WNUF Halloween Special is one of the most brilliant slices of Halloween nostalgia you’ll find, serving as a throwback love letter to both the holiday and cable access television. Seriously. If you haven’t seen it, please do change that.

Fans of the film will be happy to hear that Lamartina has just released an audio-only spinoff to the film, which plays the role of both prequel and sequel. Titled Frank Stewart Investigates: Halloween, the vinyl record is a limited edition offering, arriving just in time to make your season bright.

Full details await…

Available for the first time since 1987, Terror Vision Records is proud (albeit, slightly uneasy) to release the ghastly promotional album, WNUF TV28 presents Frank Stewart Investigates: HALLOWEEN.

This truly bizarre spoken word record was introduced after WNUF personality Frank Stewart and his guests disappeared during the infamous live broadcast of his WNUF HALLOWEEN SPECIAL in October 1987. The initial vinyl album was compiled and produced by WNUF staff to help fund search efforts for all of the missing parties.

Now, Terror Vision Records, in conjunction with the steadfast archivists at Midnight Crew Studios, is delivering an exclusive re-issue of this notorious record.

wnuf halloween special

SIDE ONE features rare audio recordings of Frank Stewart’s cutting-edge investigative reporting. Formerly a silver-tongued disc jockey, Frank joined the WNUF staff in 1984. His skeptic take on ghoulies, ghosties, and long-legged beasties were highlighted in his classic Halloween news packages. The rare clips heard here are audio excerpts from some of Stewart’s most memorable on-air news segments. Didn’t get a chance to see Stewart investigate the haunted laundromat, where clothes folded themselves and underwear disappeared? Well, now here’s your chance! Weren’t around to listen as Frank hunted down the River Hill Sheepsquatch in the dead of night? You’re in for a real treat!

SIDE TWO showcases fascinating occult analysis from everyone’s favorite paranormal research couple, Dr. Louis Berger and his wife, Claire. These unusual first-hand accounts were plucked from the Bergers’ extremely hard-to-find 1976 LP, “Sounds of the Spirit Word.” Listen closely as the Bergers document gruesome stories of Scottish banshees and disco boogeymen, and even give you step-by-step instructions on how to conduct your own seance!

While authorities have long since given up the search for Frank Stewart, Terror Vision Records is keeping hope alive with this exclusive release. If you have fond memories of Frank Stewart, WNUF TV-28, or even Halloween in general, we recommend you get your claws on this creepy record.

Head over to Terror Vision to purchase your copy. And if you’re looking to check out WNUF Halloween Special, you can grab that exclusively through Alternative Cinema!

Someone call the CDC! CRABS! They are running rampant throughout the peaceful Canadian countryside! Well, not really, but I’m a sucker for well-placed hyperbole! Raven Banner is set to give you CRABS! though.

From the Press Release:
Raven Banner has boarded CRABS!, written and directed by Pierce Berolzheimer for worldwide rights, which was featured in the current edition of The Frontieres International Work-in-Progress Market. They will also serve as executive producers.

Described as a love letter to practical effects and old-school monster movies, the film follows wheelchair-bound Philip McCallister, an unlikely hero just trying to get a date for prom when mutated horseshoe crabs descend on his sleepy coastal town and force him to step out of the wheelchair and onto the battlefield.

The deal was negotiated by Noah Lang and Evan Buxbaum and Raven Banner’s James Fler, Annick Mahnert, and Michael Paszt.

“We never thought we’d say this, but we are so happy to have CRABS!” stated Raven Banner Managing Partner Michael Paszt.

Producer Lang from Young Gunner Films said, “Raven Banner’s reputation as hungry, filmmaker-friendly, and transparent partners precedes them in the independent filmmaking world; and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them on board to finish CRABS! The Frontières Market has been an invaluable asset to us, and this partnership is evidence of the value of showcasing and supporting young genre filmmakers like Pierce. We look forward to giving the world CRABS! in 2016.”

Universal Soldier Series Veteran to Helm Maniac Cop Remake

$

After being on the table for years, the remake of the 1988 classic Manic Cop just inched a bit closer to reality as it was announced at Austin’s Fantastic Fest that John Hyams will direct.

The news came from producer Nicolas Winding Refn, of all people, so I guess we can assume that it’s genuine.

Hyams is no stranger to genetically engineered psychopaths, as he helmed two films in the Universal Soldier franchise. So the story of a former police officer being turned into an unstoppable killing machine seems like a perfect fit for him. And when you combine that with the Winding Refn craziness that we all know and love by this point, you’ve got yourself a winning formula.

In the wake of rumors that a remake of The Exorcist is a possibility, the director of the classic film, William Friedkin, has decided to take to Twitter to address the subject and hopefully let us all breathe a bit easier.

So if that’s the case, maybe we’re just looking at more sequels. With the exception of Exorcist III they all sadly sucked. Hint for studios: The only good films in the franchise have NOT TAKEN PLACE IN AFRICA. Please drop that whole thing, will ya? I mean, enough already!

When Mr. Dark interviewed Neil A. Cohen this past July about his book Exit Zero, the author said he hoped to bring it to the screen and continue the stories of those that survived the zombie apocalypse.  Now, thanks to William Morris Endeavor, he’s that much closer to achieving his goal.

From the Press Release:
William Morris Endeavor has entered into an agreement with Permuted Press to represent the film rights of the novel Exit Zero. Released in the spring of 2015, Exit Zero blends the genres of horror, comedy, and political conspiracy as it follows a group of characters fighting their way down New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway during the initial outbreak of the zombie apocalypse. The debut work by Washington, DC-based author Neil A. Cohen has received critical praise from horror review websites and fans alike for its unique take on the subject as well as the book’s humor and plot twists.

Attached to the future film is Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” a diehard zombie fan who also provided the book’s prominent cover blurb.

William Morris Endeavor (also known as WME) is one of the world’s largest talent agencies, with offices in Beverly Hills, New York, Nashville, London, and Miami. The company was formed in 2009, following the merger of Endeavor and the William Morris Agency. WME represents elite artists across every entertainment sector, specifically film, television, music, theater, advertising, literature, and digital media.

Established in 2004, Permuted Press has published over 400 works as an industry-leading independent publisher of sci-fi, fantasy, post-apocalyptic, and horror fiction. Owned and operated by a team of dedicated publishers with over 20 years of experience as well as nearly 25 New York Times bestsellers, both fiction and non-fiction, Permuted Press continues to enhance its reputation by publishing an even wider range of high-profile books via various partnerships with industry leading editors and content curators.

Synopsis:
Admit it… didn’t you always think the zombie apocalypse would begin in New Jersey? When scientific research into curing both hunger and obesity goes terribly wrong, a fast-moving plague is unleashed and sweeps across New Jersey. The state is abandoned by the country and sealed off from the world. The victims have become horrific mutations of their former selves. The inhabitants are left to kill or to die. A soldier, a scientist, a detective, a mobster, a politician, and a prepper, along with a beautiful yet dangerous woman from the Philippines, must come together during the first 48 hours of the outbreak and journey through chaos towards their only chance of escape on the Garden State Parkway…

Chomp (Short, 2014)

Chomp PosterStarring Ellah Durliat, Susan O’Gara, Kyle Porter, and Joel D. Wynkoop

Directed by Lynne Hansen

As far as the eye can see, nothing but zombies. The undead are everywhere, infesting movies, television shows, and comic books in a seemingly never-ending quest for world domination. As the market saturation reaches an all-time high, it’s often difficult for writers and directors to find a story that hasn’t been told countless times by others eager to dip their toes into these busy waters. When someone does find a new angle, it’s enough for even the most faded zombie fan to stand up and take notice.

Enter writer/director Lynne Hansen’s ridiculously enjoyable horror comedy Chomp, a short film that takes a unique approach to the zombie apocalypse. Instead of dealing with endless waves of reanimated corpses, we’re given one — at least that’s what Millie (delightfully portrayed by Susan O’Gara) believes. Unfortunately for Kyle Frost (Kyle Porter), this is simply a case of mistaken identity.

Kyle, dressed as a zombie for a Halloween party, finds himself on Millie’s property after downing one too many alcoholic beverages. Thinking that she’s stumbled across the world’s first zombie, she chains the poor guy in her garage and prepares for the worldwide attention her discovery will no doubt bring. Unfortunately for Kyle, she’s missed the mark entirely, and there’s no convincing her that this prisoner is actually a living human being. What follows is funny and a little gross.

Chomp is a fantastic short film, and not just because it’s tackling a tale we haven’t seen before. Hansen’s script is top-notch, and she packs a surprising amount of content into its slim runtime. What’s more, she’s found a handful of genuinely talented actors to bring this story to life. And while Porter does a fine job as the tale’s hapless “zombie,” it’s Susan O’Gara who steals the show. She’s spot-on as Millie, and the unbridled happiness she experiences after finding her unexpected guest is infectious. Things take a dark turn here and there, but I found it hard not to like Millie.

Cult legend Joel D. Wynkoop also makes an appearance in Chomp as Dr. Jon Croft, a talk show host who really hates the living dead. Since Millie is convinced she has the world’s first real zombie, she’s hoping to parlay this discovery into an appearance on Croft’s program. Wynkoop is fantastic as usual, and I’m not ashamed to say my opinion is probably influenced greatly by adoration for the guy.

It’s hard to find any major faults with Lynne Hansen’s Chomp. The 12-minute short is a delightfully breezy and wholly enjoyable cinematic romp with enough blood and guts to satisfy hardcore fans. And while I was certainly left wanting more (never a bad thing, in my opinion), stretching this into a feature-length film may ultimately ruin its charm. No, Chomp is precisely the length it needs to be, and I certainly hope it continues to delight festival-goers who may find themselves rolling their eyes at the thought of yet another zombie movie. Hansen has seemingly done the impossible: She’s breathed new life into a subgenre that should, in theory, have already shambled off into the distance.

SOMA (Video Game)

SOMA Face LogoDeveloped by Frictional Games

Available digitally on PC and PS4

Rated M for Mature

I can’t remember the last time a game gave me nightmares. As an individual of robust imagination, it isn’t difficult for something to come along that shocks me into a state of obsessive contemplation that persists into my slumber. Most things simply don’t, lacking the depths and ideation necessary to really work itself into my subconscious. Perhaps SOMA had a leg up; the concept of our continued identity in the face of ever more convincing replication (and beyond that, the importance of individual identity) has been on my mind since I realized some years ago that I will indeed die. It is morbidly serendipitous that this game happened to be released around the time I suffered a major injury, as it gave me the opportunity to simultaneously explore the topic and make some much needed medical bill cash.

So, of course, as fate would have it, the folks at Frictional explicitly asked reviewers to not discuss the specifics of the plot. I will respect this wish, relegating the specifics to a further editorial. So know that every review you read that reveals any of the plot specifics was written by an unscrupulous poopy butt who should probably check themselves, because in the eyes of decent society they have most certainly wrecked themselves.

If you aren’t already familiar with the name “Frictional Games”, then you are almost certainly familiar with their star title, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Seeking to break the trend of action horror that titles like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space had made standard, Amnesia created a staggering following for a new kind of often imitated horror. It revolutionized horror gaming, and lifted the studio into horror sainthood. Fan of the title or not, it would take almost an intentional level of ironic disdain to harbor genuine dislike for Amnesia. As someone who does not enjoy Amnesia style “hide-and-seek” simulators (and even more abhors the legions of jump scare clones), I still respect the expertly crafted narrative, world, and vision.

SOMA_maintenance

After contracting a pseudo sequel to The Chinese Room, people have been waiting with equal parts anticipation and apprehension for what Frictional would deliver next. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs received mixed reviews. It failed to innovate on the original title, and though the unique setting offered a lot to the narrative, it still fell short in a lot of fans’ eyes to the expectations they had for a follow up to one of the most influential indie horror games of all time. People often forget the clunky yet endearingly innovative Penumbra series, so understandably most fans question if lightning will strike twice with the long awaited SOMA.

Mechanically, very little sets SOMA apart from its contemporaries. Taking place in the underwater complex of Pathos-II, levels are split between cramped interior item hunts and sprawling underwater traversal. The juxtaposition between the two varies the tone, switching the pace up even more than the typical safe zone vs monster zone dynamic. Gameplay consists entirely of searching for key objects while avoiding the occasional monster, with puzzles providing just enough of a brain stretch to keep you engaged. It is a basic formula, simple enough that anyone familiar with these kinds of games shouldn’t have any trouble figuring out what to do. I only got stuck once, and it was when I missed a key object on the desk behind me.

SOMA_base

While it all works, there’s nothing new here gameplay wise. You still have to avert your gaze and cower in a corner to avoid the malicious machines of Pathos-II, but gone are hiding spots like cabinets or dressers. It is a streamlined version of the formula, where accidentally tripping over an unavoidable bucket won’t alert every eldritch horror within the base of your exact coordinates. The basics stealth rules still apply, requiring you to stick to the shadows and weigh the risk and reward of making noise for extra speed. The unique addition to SOMA is that enemies are varied, and not all have access to all of their senses. Blind, deaf, and even ploddingly slow foes will serve as roadblocks, giving incentive to a bit of trial and error experimentation. The most interesting of these foes was a walking ball of light that detected you when you looked at it, requiring some creative camera gymnastics to get by. The game still falls victim to the bullshit “monster just won’t leave the doorway” design, but it functions well enough to provide the experience fans want.

With the legions of mindless carbon copies out there, it can be easy to forget that these games can have a story. While most titles treat the story as a vehicle for the protagonist to be forced to sneak through a house of horrors, SOMA goes the opposite direction. Without the narrative, SOMA would not exist. Every piece of the title is intricately woven and tied back into the central plot. It doesn’t feel like a hand waved plot device has flipped all the robots’ switches to murder mode, and it winds up being a hell of a lot more compelling than “some virus made people go bonkers.”

While I cannot talk about the specifics of the plot, the game asks the general question of what it means to be alive. This goes beyond the typical “right to die” debate of the terminally ill (though that is a huge factor) and into the realm of what it means to be yourself. Salvation in SOMA is a bleak and abstract prospect, requiring enough sacrifice that to many it might not seem worth it. As far as I can tell, there is only one ending, which serves as both the “good” and “bad” ending. There are several branching choices you make along the way, which affect how you experience the world. You won’t get a different ending or renegade points for killing a hapless robot, but it will influence how you as a player feel.

Soma_Ocean

It all comes together in an incredibly thought provoking and accessible package. There are a few head scratch moments, and it is saddening to see the various forum posts from irate fans who “didn’t get it.” It is a complex story, but not an impenetrable one. The narrative burden is significantly lightened by the addition of a companion character, who for much of the game serves to propose questions/answers about the narrative themes. Spend some time in the world, and it should be apparent what is going on. Even if you fail to grasp the various motivations of the characters or the nature of the WAU, you should be able to figure it out well enough to make the choices the game asks of you.

It is unfortunate that SOMA didn’t innovate more. As it stands, it is a near perfect example of the popular stealth-horror genre. It goes above and beyond in setting and story, crafting an unforgettably haunting experience. Gameplay wise, it’s just nothing new. It is a bit unreasonable to expect everything that Frictional does to revolutionize the genre, but Amnesia shook the horror gaming landscape. Five years later, the genre deserves another grand evolution. Many of us were looking at Frictional to deliver that. SOMA is a near perfect horror game that any fan of the genre should buy without hesitation. What it isn’t is the next Amnesia

As you can tell from the latest artwork for writer/director Robert Michael Ryan’s Dark Revelations, it’s always a good idea to have a few guns handy when demons take over the world. The film explores what happens when hideous creatures essentially invade the planet after the Biblical Rapture, and apparently this unsightly problem can be solved with the squeeze of a trigger.

If you need more info about the plot, then read this:

In this post apocalyptic, action-thriller, Demons plague the Earth after the Biblical Rapture. Jeremy (Cuyle Carvin) and Dana (Marlene Mc’Cohen) must make their way to a mysterious cabin deep into the wilderness in order to survive. The end of the world is just the beginning.

Randall Kaplan’s Boxhead Proves Animated Horror Is Alive and Well

Not too long ago, yours truly discussed filmmaker Brad Bird’s hopes for the future of 2D animated cinema. And while I stupidly assumed that Bird was dipping his toes into these waters and ultimately irritated the man himself, the article caught the attention of a few directors who are using animation to evoke terror in their respective audiences. Sorry about that, Mr. Bird. That’s my bad.

Randall Kaplan is among the filmmakers who reached out to Dread Central, and I’ve gotta say that his upcoming animated feature Boxhead looks absolutely terrifying. Although he’s still in the process of bringing this tale to life, it’s quite clear that his style is ridiculously engaging.

Here’s what the film is about:

Al is an aging, alcoholic recluse. There was a time when he aspired to be someone; a writer with a life and career. That time, along with all of his dreams, has long passed him by. He lives alone, his life reduced to an empty, solitary, and drunken existence. But as time slips away, a strange creature watches, waiting in the dark…

One night Al discovers something absolutely horrible that could possibly save his soul. He takes on the role of a detective, acting out a story he never finished. All the while, the creature enters into different people’s lives, unveiling their deepest fears and regrets, their loneliness… and feeding off of it. Al is led down a rabbit hole, through a labyrinth of past and present fantasies and nightmares, to ultimately find himself.

Need proof of Boxhead’s inherent coolness? Check out the prelude and some artwork below. We’ll definitely let you know when Kaplan’s next Kickstarter campaign is under way. For more info about the project, check out the original Kickstarter campaign page. It’s packed with details.

There’s Still Time to Support Everybody Dies at ScaryCon

As of this writing, you still have 10 days to contribute to the Kickstarter campaign for Everybody Dies at ScaryCon. Producer Sara Parrell describes the flick as a “love letter” to the genre, which might explain why it takes place at a horror convention. When she’s not producing movies, Parrell is the Festival Director at the Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival. This is all starting to come together.

Written and directed by Jeff Smith (Stupid Teenagers Must Die!), the film tells the story of jaded horror director Ed Stryker and his decision to kick the genre to the proverbial curb after losing his passion to make movies. Unfortunately for Stryker, it’s not very easy to simply walk away.

The following synopsis puts a finer point on the story:

Everybody Dies at ScaryCon is the story of Ed Stryker, a horror director who made a huge splash in the independent film renaissance of the early 90’s with his grungy, black and white, zero budget movie, Machete Betty. Now, Ed is a shell of the man who dreamed of entertaining the world through his films. The passion is gone and the flame’s died down. Even though the quality of his films deteriorate with each release, he still finds loyal fans eager to meet him at the annual horror convention, ScaryCon. But this year will definitely be his last.

After a long night in the hotel bar, Ed discovers that the patrons sitting next to him are no longer the typical convention fanboys and cosplayers. They’re the bloodthirsty monsters from his movies. They’re alive. They have their customary machetes and chainsaws. And they’re pissed.

Want to see Everybody Dies at ScaryCon? If so, then you’ll need to toss some money at the film’s official Kickstarter campaign. The clock is ticking, so gather your pennies as fast as you can! While you’re counting all of that spare change, have a look at the pitch video below.

Strange Night of the Living Dead Brings a Little Music to the Graveyard

Writer/director Roman Soni is clearly a fan of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” not to mention horror flicks from the 80s. His short film Strange Night of the Living Dead combines music with blood, guts, and, of course, boobs. It’s probably one of the few places you can find a zombie playing guitar while another drops a few verses. It’s weirdly hypnotic, and what’s more, the 10-minute short is available for free.

Nikky stumbles upon an abandoned cemetery while trying to escape a masked killer,” reads the description on YouTube. It’s not much of a synopsis, but you really don’t need a lot of buildup.

For more information about Strange Night of the Living Dead and writer/director Roman Soni’s other projects, take a moment to swing by the filmmaker’s official website.
