The 12 Disasters of Christmas Count Down to a 2012 Yulepocalyse

$

The 12 Disasters of Christmas Count Down to a 2012 YulepocalyseOnly Syfy could take something like the biblical Star of Bethlehem, said to have appeared in the sky over the manger in which Jesus Christ was born, and twist it into the basis for a Yuletide end-of-the-world disaster flick. You’re going to need a special Advent calendar next year when Syfy counts down The 12 Disasters of Christmas.

Synopsis:
It's Christmas Eve when an ominous dark star appears in the sky; could this star be a sign that Judgment Day is near? When massive earthquakes and natural disasters tear apart cities, it seems that the day of reckoning is upon us -- and now a small band of heroes must come together to save the world!

If the screenwriter has any sense of humor, there will be a brilliant scientist named Dr. Wiseman or that band of heroes will consist of three men named Goldie, Franklin, and Murray.

Cinetel is set to produce The 12 Disasters of Christmas early next year for what I have to assume will cap off next December’s banner year for Syfy disaster epics.

Not at all by coincidence, I do believe nearly half of the original Syfy movies for the Mayan doomsday year of 2012 will be disaster flicks, and I’d guess nearly half of those are being produced by Cinetel, the maker of both of this month’s Syfy disaster premieres (Snowmageddon and Earth’s Final Hours) and the first Syfy flick of 2012 premiering in two weeks, the disaster flick Collision Earth.

Maybe all these disaster movie cash-ins on the 2012 craze is what the Mayan calendar was really predicting?

B-Sides: Die Hard with an Antichrist Superstar

Imagine a Die Hard scenario set aboard a passenger plane. Imagine if the John McClain of the movie was based on Marilyn Manson. Imagine if the terrorists were a Satanic cult trying to bring about hell on earth. If you’ve ever seen Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal, you weren’t imagining it.

If you’re a regular listener of my Foycasts, then you are probably already aware of my love for Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal. It really is one of those movies you have to see to believe.

The unlikely devil worshipper-whooping, plane-landing, hard-rocking hero of Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal is a Marilyn Manson clone named Slade Craven. Played by Canadian actor/musician John Mann, who is, rather ironically, more famous for performing in Broadway-style musicals and providing lead vocals for the Spirit of the West folk rock band. Mann’s physical and musical makeover into the Manson-esque Slade Craven proves Mann is nothing if not versatile, as you will see in the clip below from a scene in which Craven performs a live internet concert in the belly of the soon-to-be-hijacked to hell 747.

Here’s John Mann as Slade Craven in Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal performing this weekend’s B-Sides, “Gun Love”, an adrenaline-pumping number that could very easily have been an actual b-side on any given Marilyn Manson album.

The Six Slays of Christmas - Day Six

At last it's time for the sixth and final installment of Dread Central's Six Slays of Christmas feature! We're now just one day away the year's biggest holiday, and to celebrate the coming of Saint Nick (or whomever you believe in), we've been taking a look at a different yuletide horror flick each day until the 25th! Think of it as a cinema crazed Advent calendar!

Although the Six Slays of Christmas have come to you in no particular order, it's fitting that today's entry was saved for the finale. For Day Six we feature an absolute classic, Bob Clark's 1974 groundbreaking horror film Black Christmas, which proved to us that Canada has more to offer than just Pam Anderson, hockey and Molson Canadian Lager. The script was written by Roy Moore, who drew inspiration from actual murders that occurred in Montreal around Christmastime. And a horrific cinematic gem was born.

The Six Slays of Christmas - Day Six

Filmed in just 40 days, the influence of Black Christmas can be seen in countless horror films that followed. In the initial scene we have the killer stalking around outside the sorority house. And as he walks and peeks in the window, we are seeing everything through his perspective. This certainly had to be an influence for John Carpenter's opening scene for Halloween (which came along four years later). Or consider the scene in which the police trace the killer's calls coming from inside the house. (And check out the high-tech phone-tracing machine they used…it was the size of a living room!) We have to at least consider the fact that the creators of When a Stranger Calls (1979) drew some influence here.

And how about the infamous phone calls themselves, which terrorized the girls of Black Christmas? What starts as an almost comical nuisance becomes extremely creepy as the film rolls on. Clark (who also appears as the prowler's shadow) and veteran actor Nick Mancuso (who appears as the actual prowler) were responsible for creating the creepy calls…as well as an unidentified woman. Judging by the voices on the calls, I would be willing to bet the woman involved was outstanding voice actress Mercedes McCambridge, who delivered a similarly disturbing performance in The Exorcist one year earlier. There's no proof that she was involved, but that voice does sound eerily familiar.

Black Christmas, at least in name, underwent many changes before finally settling on its memorable title. Upon initial release the film had also carried the titles Stop Me, Silent Night, Evil Night and Stranger in the House. In preparation for its US release, Warner Brothers even tried to convince Clark to change the ending to have Clare Harrison's boyfriend, Chris, appear in front of Jess and say, "Agnes, don't tell them what we did," thus revealing him to be the killer. Thankfully, Clark knew the film worked much better with the mystery killer ending and left it as it was…to the delight of decades of Black Christmas audiences.

Not only was it a trailblazing film as far as creating unique imagery that would be mimicked by films that followed, Black Christmas was a truly effective horror film overall. Clark managed to create real discomfort and tension with the outlandish phone calls and grim shots of the killer stalking his prey. It's hard not to gnaw your fingernails to the quick as the initial victim, Clare, slowly walks toward her closet following what she believes is the sound of Claude, the house cat, when in reality we know the killer is waiting to pounce on her. And tell me your skin didn't crawl a bit when Jess (Olivia Hussey) sees the killer's eye staring at her from behind the door. That was some truly effective horrific filmmaking.

Clark wove the story masterfully around the scenes of violence, working in Jess' pregnancy issue as a key point of the story, bringing drama into the fold to enhance the horror. And we mustn't forget the comedic elements of the film. In addition to creeping the shit out of you, Black Christmas will make you laugh out loud. It's a complete work.

From the unforgettable image of Clare's suffocated body sitting in the rocking chair to the vicious murder of Barb (Margot Kidder), Black Christmas consistently delivers. It's amazing to think that the film is nearly 40 years old and is as effective today as it was during its initial release.

As one of the original slasher films, Black Christmas has certainly entertained us all through repeated viewings. With phone calls to make your flesh crawl, murders to make you wince and an ambiguous ending to keep you awake at night, Black Christmas easily earned its place as the grand finale of the Six Slays of Christmas. Ho, ho, ho!

Wolf Creek 2 Once Again Seeking Investors

$

Remember a while back when we mentioned that the long awaited sequel to Wolf Creek had found its funding and was ready to go? Sadly, things change, and now? Well, now not so much. In fact, instead of fake blood, the filmmakers have one big mess on their hands.

According to The Herald Sun, Geoffrey Edelsten has launched legal action over his $5 million investment in the sequel to Aussie horror flick Wolf Creek. In documents filed in the Supreme Court this week, Mr Edelsten has flagged his intention to have rescinded the investment deed he signed for the sequel. He says he would never have invested $5 million had he known he was "by far and away" the biggest single private investor. The film has a $13.2 million budget.

Mr Edelsten says in an affidavit that only $300,000 of this was from other private investors, the balance coming from government grants.

He says the amount coming from government agencies was not mentioned in his first meeting with the film's director, and government support did not provide him with the "same comfort" as private investors.

Emu Creek Pictures, of which Greg McLean is a director, sent Millennium Management, of which Mr Edelsten is director, a statutory demand last month for payment of $4.923 million.

Millennium has now taken action against Emu Creek and is asking the Supreme Court to set aside the statutory demand.

"The plaintiff wishes to investigate irregularities with the investment deed and PIA (private investor agreement)," Mr Edelsten says in his affidavit.

"Further, based on the misrepresentations about the other private investors and the tax deductibility of my proposed investment, I believe that the plaintiff has a complete defence to the alleged debt."

Mr Edelsten says in his affidavit he intends to issue separate action to rescind the investment deed.

Wolf Creek 2 would see John Jarratt reprise his role as deranged killer Mick Taylor.

Mr Edelsten revealed in August he was backing Wolf Creek 2.

"I was looking for a film with international appeal and the script for Wolf Creek 2 blew me away. I loved the first film, but this will set the bar at a new height," he said at the time.

"It's bigger, badder, more terrifying and action-packed than the first film. After reading the script it stuck with me for weeks, and meeting Greg and Matt (producer Matt Hearn) sealed the deal."

In a statement late yesterday, Emu Creek Pictures denied Mr Edelsten's allegations.

"We intend to fight the allegations in the Supreme Court of Victoria and are confident of victory," the statement said.

"The production company has been clear, thorough and transparent in all its dealings with Geoffrey Edelsten and Millennium Management from the outset with Screen Australia overseeing the contracting process for the film."

The dispute over the Wolf Creek 2 investment is due to be heard in February.

The Xhosa people of Lisotho and the southern plains of Africa have a legendary beast of which they tell tale. You've heard of Sasquatch, Yeti and Chupacabra; now prepare yourself to meet Tokoloshe! With filming set to begin in January 2012, director Jordan Harland is hoping to introduce the world to this beast in the South African film Blood Tokoloshe: Dawn of the Beast.

Described as a short, hairy dwarf-like evil spirited creature, the Tokoloshe can be called upon to do evil bidding for someone (kinda like Pumpkinhead) and must be stopped by a witch doctor. Other legends have them vampiric and part-demon with a very active libido. Basically, you don't want to invite one of these guys to a dinner party.

Blood Tokoloshe: Dawn of the Beast starts filming in January. Take a look at the early trailer below to get an idea of what Harland has in store for us.

Synopsis
Strange attacks plague the township’s women, leaving the leaders at a loss to defend them. At the same time Mthnuzi, a shrewd businessman, is becoming wealthier and more popular with the ladies – something is amiss. The local reverend, Simon Nkosi, learns that Mthunzi is controlling a Tokoloshe to fulfill his greedy desires. In his greed he breaks a golden rule of maintaining control over the beast, and it goes on a rampage. Now its thirst for blood is strong and comes after Mthunzi’s women, saving the one he loves for last. Together with Reverend Simon they must take on a mythical beast that has never been defeated.

Feature Film Plans in the Works for Lovecraftian Short The Black Goat

We checked out a cool Lovecraftian short film entitled The Black Goat, written and directed by Joseph Nanni, recently and got word that there are big plans in store for the six-minute creation. The title of the film refers to Lovecraftian character Shub-Niggurath (also known as The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young) from the Cthulhu mythos.

Creator Nanni is currently working to turn The Black Goat into a feature film. During an interview on Undead Backbrain, Nanni said, “We’re in development and have a rather major distributor working with us. We haven’t talked cast yet, although Adam Wilson (Manson, Ending The Eternal) is locked in to play the lead. Production design has started, but I still may reach out to some Lovecraft luminaries for concept design.”

Aside from Wilson (who stars in the short film as well, Lovecraftian artist Dave Carson (see his imagining of Shub-Niggurath below) is attached to the project to, according to Nanni, "help us realize some Elder God nastiness for the upcoming Black Goat feature."

Synopsis
Jacques Cowan is what the French call “a runner of the woods.” He may be a foreigner in the new world, but Jacques quickly learned the ways of the native people, their language, their routes, and their skills. But he didn’t leave his life in another land for adventure, freedom, and wealth — he had much more in mind than trading pelts and cheating death. Jacques had listened intently to the stories that had crossed the ocean, extraordinary tales of mystical creatures and unknown forces. Black Goat finds Jacques mid-hunt, as he closes in on what others thought was a legend. What he doesn’t realize is that the legend is on a hunt of its own.

Damned by many. Celebrated by sickos. You will finally get a chance to decide which side of the fence you fall on when Tom Six's controversial sequel, The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence, scurries home for Valentine's Day.

What better gift could you possibly give to the significant other in your life? Though no details have been announced just yet in terms of special features, etc., look for the flick in stores on February 14th, 2012, courtesy of IFC Midnight.

Synopsis:
Martin (Laurence R. Harvey) is a mentally disturbed loner who lives with his nagging mother in a bleak London housing project, where loud neighbors and cramped living conditions threaten to plunge this victim of sexual and psychological abuse over the edge.

He works the night shift as a security guard in an underground parking garage, where customers and their vehicles come and go as he indulges his obsession with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE), watching the film over and over on the small TV set in his office and meticulously examining the scrapbook he has lovingly filled with memorabilia from the film, including the mouth-to-anus surgery instructions made famous by Dr. Heiter, the mad scientist from Martin's favorite movie.

Thanks to DC reader Goresick for the heads-up!

Pushed to the brink by his harridan mother, haunted by the teasing voices of his abusive and incarcerated father, Martin sets into motion his plan to emulate Heiter's centipede by creating his own version in a rented warehouse, which he begins to fill with victims, including a loud neighbor, two drunk nightclubbers, a prostitute and a lecherous john, and several more ... including Martin's pièce de résistance, one of the actresses from THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE).

Except that Martin lacks the surgical skill, medical instruments, and operating theater necessary to create a larger centipede in the image of Dr. Heiter's masterpiece. So he makes use of materials at hand: duct tape, staple gun, household tools, and a fanboy moxie.

What follows is one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived, featuring a central character that makes FIRST SEQUENCE's Dr. Heiter seem downright cuddly in comparison. THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (FULL SEQUENCE) is a triumph in biological horror by one of the new masters of the horror film.

Burning Moon Ready to Stain the World Red

Fans of German splatter king Olaf Ittenbach can finally rejoice as his ultra-violent 1997 flick The Burning Moon is finally making its way to home video. Mop and a plastic tarp not included.

Look for it on February 14th, 2012.

From the Press Release
Intervision Picture Corp is pleased to announce the Special Edition DVD release of Olaf Ittenbach’s shocking gorefest THE BURNING MOON. Described by Vice Magazine as “unspeakable carnage,” the last word in splatter-soaked, German nihilism was shot on glorious VHS in the 90s and will be packaged for the first time with a rare, recently unearthed 45-minute bonus making-of documentary.

“When the Germans make a horror movie,” says Mr. Beaks of Ain’t It Cool News, “THEY MAKE A F%*#ING HORROR MOVIE!” In 1992 writer/director/special effects master Olaf Ittenbach changed the face of video horror, force-fed its ripped-out eyeballs to screaming audiences, then used a drill, machete and shotgun on its still-twitching torso: Ittenbach himself stars as a degenerate junkie who babysits his young sister with two bedtime stories of the damned. First an escaped serial killer turns date night into a graphic family massacre. Then a country priest on a rape and murder spree leads to a disturbingly explicit descent into Hell. It became the VHS that shocked America. It has been banned in its Motherland for nearly 20 years. And it remains perhaps the most violent and depraved shot-on-video saga in history. This is THE BURNING MOON.

Rest in Peace: Hammer Films' Don Sharp

$

Rest in Peace: Hammer Films' Don SharpSome really sad news has emerged this holiday week as we've lost a true icon of our industry. While his name may not jump out at you unless you're as obsessive as we are, his movies have been making people leap out of their skin for decades.

According to Variety, Don Sharp, an Australia-born film director who was brought in to revive Hammer Films' sagging horror franchise in the mid-1960s -- and succeeded -- despite having no experience in the genre, died December 14th in Cornwall, England. He was 90.

Though the names most closely associated with Hammer are Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, it was director Terence Fisher who shaped the Gothic horror films that starred those actors. Fisher had directed films like Horror of Dracula and The Revenge of Frankenstein in the late 1950s, but the company lost its confidence in the helmer when his 1962 entry The Phantom of the Opera, later considered a cult classic, failed both at the box office and with critics.

When he came aboard at Hammer, he was assigned first to The Kiss of the Vampire. Sharp, who had recently done some work in British television, hired TV actors, and despite the fact that Lee and Cushing were nowhere to be found, the inexpensive but stylish film was a B.O. winner and a favorite to this day. Memorably grandiose scenes included a sequence depicting a sumptuous ball.

For Hammer, Sharp also directed The Devil-Ship Pirates and Rasputin: The Mad Monk, the latter with Lee; for other companies, he made several films similar to his Hammer efforts: Witchcraft, with Lon Chaney Jr., and The Face of Fu Manchu and The Brides of Fu Manchu, both with Lee.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Sharp's family, friends, and constituents. Thanks for the memories, sir. You will be missed.

You have got to love technology. Back in the day for the devil to speak, you'd have to play records backwards and stuff. It was a real pain in the ass getting the speed right. Now, all he has to do is find two sickos loony enough to relay his message for him online. Those lovable sickos? Repo! The Genetic Opera's Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich.

The official Devil's Carnival website opened its doors a couple of days ago rockin' some tasty art and a short video preview of what was to come, and now Big Red himself has checked in with a message for the fans looking for some good old fashioned music filled craziness.

While definitely not a direct sequel to the aforementioned Repo!, this seems to be cut from the same cloth, and it does mark the second collaboration between Bousman and Zdunich. Stay tuned for more as it comes, kids.

Check out the teaser below, which features Emilie Autumn playing a circus carnie, and of course the message from old hot stuff himself. Testify!
