Update on Brazilian Horror Feature Beyond the Grave (Porto Dos Mortos)

$

0

It was in 2008 when we first heard about Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro's Beyond the Grave (Porto Dos Mortos), but things appear to be back on track for the Brazilian film as it's screening at the Chicago Latino Film Festival on April 21st and 26th.

Written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro (who also produced with Isidoro B. Guggiana), Beyond the Grave follows the unstoppable hunt of a vengeful cop (Rafael Tombini) for a supernatural serial killer. In its film festival circuit the Brazilian fantasy feature gained international acclaim, being also selected for the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (Cuba), and won two awards: Best Horror Feature Award at the Arizona Underground Film Festival and Audience Choice Award for Best Latin American Feature at Montevideo Fantástico (Uruguay).

Shot in the city of Porto Alegre, south of Brazil, Beyond the Grave is an arthouse mixture of road movie, spaghetti western, and different horror sub-genres such as zombie and black magic. "I tried to bring in everything I had learned about cinema and humanity from the beginning of my conscious life till the moment of locking the final cut. I think we should be respectful of genre, of course, but a rigid tone is more important than a rigid genre. We’re in an age where amalgamations are common nature in art. Cinema shouldn’t be excluded," believes the filmmaker.

Beyond the Grave stars Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosacosta, Ricardo Seffner, Leandro Lefa, Luciana Verch, and Amanda Grimaldi.

Here are the film's screening dates at the Chicago Latino Film Festival:

Saturday, April 21, 2012, 9:15 pm
Thursday, April 26, 2012, 8:45 pm
Landmark Theatres - 2828 N. Clark St. - Phone: 773-509-4949

Synopsis:
In a devastated post-apocalyptic world where the rules of reality are transformed by magic and madness, a vengeful police officer searches for a possessed serial killer in a battle of the not-so-good versus absolute evil.

Catch the Final Performances of Nosferatu This Weekend in New Jersey

New Jersey isn't just about orange people with dangerously sharp hair and cleavage you can't escape; it's also about VAMPIRES - the kind that rip your head off with teeth or sharp nails. And an ambitious theatre troupe is proving its love for the fanged with a live performance of Nosferatu.

Based on the 1923 German Expressionist film by F.W. Murnau, writer/director Alex Dawson's stage adaptation additionally draws on Chinese shadow-play, Shakespeare, and explorer/orientalist Richard Burton's translation of Hindu vampire fables to tell the story of Count Orlock, a rat-fanged Romanian looking for love even as he brings a boatload of Black Death to a German village.

From the team that brought you A Clockwork Orange with makeup by Tom Savini alumnus Dan Diana and original music by composer Bruce Donnola, the production, which stars film actress Quinn Shephard as Ellen Hutter and Shakespearean actor Caryle Owens as the eponymous Nos, opens with a scene so unsettling even the swooniest Twilight fan would be hard pressed to find the conceit remotely romantic ever again.

Have we piqued your interest? Well, we've got good news and bad news. The good news is this play is going on RIGHT NOW. The bad news? Literally...right now. Drop what you're doing if you want to see this!! Only a few showtimes are left:

3:00, 7:30 & 10:00 PM - Saturday, April 21st
3:00 & 7:30 PM - Sunday, April 22nd
EDISON VALLEY PLAYHOUSE
2196 Oak Tree Road, Edison, NJ 08820

Tickets are available HERE, and further info can be found HERE.

If you miss it this weekend, don't worry - it's supposed to be heading to New York next, and we'll be sure to keep you posted if and when that happens.

Sideshow's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Diorama Now Available for Pre-Order

$

While the Don't Be Afraid of the Dark remake was disappointing to most of us, no one can deny that the creatures themselves were pretty cool, which is why we're letting you know that Sideshow Collectibles' badass Don't Be Afraid of the Dark polystone diorama just became available for pre-order.

Product Description:
Sideshow Collectibles is proud to present the Don't Be Afraid of the Dark diorama. Inspired by the gripping Guillermo Del Toro film, the mysterious and vicious inhabitants of Blackwood Manor are captured in 1:1 scale. Creeping out from the darkness, the creatures measure 6.5 and 7.25 inches tall, respectively, and are hand crafted with Sideshow's trademark attention to detail. The Don't Be Afraid of the Dark diorama makes a chilling and noteworthy addition to any collection.

The Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Polystone Diorama features:

  • Alphabet Blocks with initials GDT (Guillermo Del Toro) and DBA (Don't Be Afraid)
  • Back Story:
Peering at victims from the darkness and a past that predates humanity, the homunculus creatures dwell in our nightmares made real. They surface with stealth, to catch even a glimpse is unusual, and far more rare are open interactions, except with the isolated or the weak.

Alex, an over-busy father, brings his girlfriend Kim and daughter Sally to Blackwood Manor in Rhode Island to begin restoration of the estate. Eight-year-old Sally finds herself with plenty of time to explore the mansion and discover its secrets, including a hidden basement and sealed fireplace she can't resist opening. Inside she finds a curious item: a discarded adult tooth.

Drawn to children, the creatures offer few clues to their origin or motives, but they violently prevent the fireplace from being sealed again. Offering insight into their disturbing intentions, they leave a coin under Sally's pillow in exchange for the lost tooth. Rooted in the darkness of the area's underground caves and in the realm of faerie, the creatures become more aggressive in their attempts to abduct Sally, as they likely have uncounted other children. After the creatures brutally attack one of Blackwood's workmen, Mr. Harris, Kim investigates the mysterious history of the estate and its former lord. The terrified family discovers the true intent of these creatures: to abduct Sally and transform her into one of their own.

Click here to pre-order yours now; the estimated shipping date is October, 2012.

B-Sides: Raiders of the Living Dead Are After Me

    $

I must confess that I have never seen the movie Raiders of the Living Dead. I don’t recall even knowing such a movie existed until I stumbled upon the opening credits song by accident. One listen, and you’ll understand why I realized that song was an instant B-Sides.

Raiders of the Living Dead was a 1986 horror movie about a reporter investigating the mysterious happenings on a remote island where a mad scientist is creating zombies. From what I’ve read on IMDB, it was such an ultra low budget production, much of the crew were New York film students. B-moviemaker and effects guy Brett Piper pretty much started his career with this film.

As I said, I’ve never seen the movie, and from some of the reviews I’ve skimmed over, I’m probably better off for it. Most seem to agree that the opening credits song, a bit of a folksy 1970’s rock melody written and performed by George Edward Ott, is the best part of the movie.

If those critics are correct, then this week’s B-Sides is the only part of Raiders of the Living Dead you’ll ever need to see.

Syfy Issues an Alien Tornado Warning with These Three Videos

If you’ve been paying attention to the news over the past two weeks, then you’ve heard all about the massive tornado outbreaks that have been ravaging several states. On the bright side, at least they weren't alien tornadoes. But an Alien Tornado will be touching down on Syfy tonight.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 director Jeff Burr is behind the camera for Syfy’s Alien Tornado, starring the venerable Jeff Fahey and the fetching Kari Wuhrer. Let the press release tell you more.

Alien Tornado, premiering Saturday, April 21 at 9PM (ET/PT), stars Jeff Fahey (Machete) and Kari Wuhrer (Sliders). In the movie aliens attack Earth, using deadly electrical tornadoes as weapons. A farmer, his brilliant high school daughter, and a tornado blogger race against the clock to find a way to thwart the horrific invasion. Alien Tornado is a production of Active Entertainment.

A tornado blogger? Somehow that just doesn’t sound as cool a job as being a tornado chaser.

With less than 24 hours remaining before Alien Tornado premieres, now is probably as good a time as any to give you a taste of the glowing funnel cloud action to come with two scenes from the film Syfy has unveiled.

The first is the 30-second preview with plenty of city twisting action. A busload of people gets vacuumed into space in the second clip. According to the third, look, when Jeff Fahey tells you to get your ass to the storm shelter, you get your ass to the storm shelter.

Alien Tornado premieres tonight on Syfy at 9/8 Central.

Production Wraps on Murder University; New Stills Released

    0

Rhode Island-based Scorpio Film Releasing has wrapped production on its 12th feature film, Murder University, and sent over a few new stills from the flick, which is an homage to the slasher films of the 80's slated to premiere in late July of 2012.

SFR promises that Murder University is the company's most violent and gory film to date. It stars Jamie Dufault, Michael Thurber, and Samantha Acampora.

Director Richard Griffin says, "Murder University is nothing but pure entertainment. Extreme graphic violence, action, sex, nudity, comedy, a musical number... hell, anything and everything we could throw at the audience, we did! The performances are top-notch, and the movie has a scope that most low budget films could only dream of. It's a great testament to my amazingly hardworking crew and my tireless producers Ted Marr and Kristin Kayala."

Acclaimed playwright turned screenwriter Lenny Schwartz adds, "It's been an honor and a privilege to work with this cast, crew, producers, and director on the film. It certainly is the bloodiest thing I have ever written, and it is filled with things I have never done in the theater: blood, sex, extreme violence, and nudity. And that positively fills me with glee."

Actor Jamie Dufault says, "I've spent nearly every weekend for the past two and a half months engaging in general debauchery with this wonderful cast and crew, and I've loved every second of it. It's an experience I won't soon forget."

Actress Samantha Acampora explains, "Murder University was an amazing experience for me. We started filming soon after I returned from a year living in LA, and it was great having this to come home to. I love Lenny's writing, and the crew was so professional and fun to work with. I was really sad to wrap... Richard is a wonderful director, and I got to work with such talented actors like Jamie Dufault and Michael Thurber. I can't wait to see how the whole thing turns out!"

Murder University also stars Sean Sullivan, Rich Tretheway, Nat Sylva, Lee Rush, Nick Apostolides, Christopher Ferreira, Kevin Killavey, and Daniel Lee White.

    Synopsis:
A series of brutal, cult-like murders are taking place at a New England college. Josh Greene, a shy freshman, is the lone survivor of the murders, which are reminiscent of a similar string of killings some twenty years prior. As he seeks to uncover the secret behind the attacks, he is joined by Detective Forrester, who was instrumental in halting the bloodshed before, and his daughter, Meg, who had barely escaped being a victim previously.

Stay tuned for more info on screenings and the upcoming trailer for the film. In the meantime visit the Murder University Facebook page.

Films featuring inanimate objects capable of killing humans are a bit of crapshoot - people seemed to either love or hate Rubber without much in-between. How they'll take to Drill Kills, about a reanimated construction worker's drill, remains to be seen. Check out the flick's trailer and let us know what you think.

The folks at Splatter Container clued us in to Drill Kills (Trapano Uccide), directed by Alessio De Nicola from a script written by Severino Iuliano with the great Sergio Stivaletti providing special effects. Valeria Perri and Eleonora Gnazi star in the English language film.

    Synopsis:
John is a forty-year-old laborer with a wife and child in the Congo. One day, forced to work in inhumane conditions by a greedy real estate agent, John loses his life after falling from the roof of a house. Due to a dramatic coincidence, the drill that he was carrying falls on him with the tip sticking straight into his right eye. John dies, but his soul enters the drill, giving it life. His vengeance begins. This is "Drill Kills".

Paying the price for this are three American students - Wendy, Rose, and Desirée. Their plan is to spend the summer studying Italian in Abruzzo, enroll the following year at the University in Italy, and in the meantime enjoy the lifestyle of the “Belpaese”. But it happens that the house placed among the vineyards and countryside, where John was working, is the one in which the three young women will spend the summer. It is, in fact, the house of Desirée's maternal grandparents.

Patricia Tallman Enters Delamorte's Dungeon Of Deadly DelightsWhat is up Fiends! It's another great day as the darkness looms overhead! I feel like taking my black carriage out for a spin to haunt the locals! But first, I wanted to let you all in on this week's episode of The Dungeon!

This week we had the badass as well as beautiful, Patricia Tallman visiting the show. Genre geeks the world over know her from Army Of Darkness, "Babylon Five", "Star Trek", and of course, the gun totin' model of Barbara in the excellent 1990's remake of Night Of The Living Dead!

I was joined by my "Terror Team" of Hollywood F/X Master, Thomas Surprenant as well as the lovely "Demoness" Apocalypse Amy Lynes. The entire team was accounted for after all the undead hi-jinks that occurred last week. Also joining us as a special guest co-host is yje co-writer/director of Night Of The Living Dead 2012, my horrorpunk brother, Matt Cloude!

We spoke to Pat about so much including playing the "She-Bitch" in Army of Darkness, being a stunt woman, and of course "Star Trek" vs. "Babylon Five" - Who would kick whose ass, and so much more! She was down to Earth and definitely a hell of a lot of fun!

Matt was just an awesome addition in every way. Speaking of Night Of The Living Dead 2012, I would like to congratulate my sister as well as roommate, Alicia Deven Clark, for scoring a sweet role in the film! This girl is truly a monster talent, and she is on her way to being a formidable genre queen! So look out for her!

Next week Motor City Nightmares is upon the Metro-Detroit area, and it's going to be a great convention! "Apocalypse" Amy Lynes and I will be there, so be sure to come say hey. The Guest List includes Michael Berryman, Ken Foree, SyFy's Monster Man, Cleve Hall, Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, and so many more sinister stars! That's next weekend, April 27th thru the 29th in Novi , Michigan!

Speaking of Sid ... guess who's on the show next week? I cannot believe it myself, but we are going to be joined by the almighty Sid Haig! Talk about ending off the month with a true legend! Fifty years in the business and counting! I would like to end off by thanking Creepy and the rest of the Dread gang for continuing to believe in the show! I really do love you guys, and you deserve every bit of your continuing reign! Well, that's it for me, I will scare ya later, Dread fans!

The film, which stars James Ransone, Ethan Hawke, and Juliet Rylance, will arrive in theatres on October 5th via Summit Entertainment.

From a script by director Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, "Ethan Hawke plays a journalist who travels with his family around the country to investigate gruesome murders he turns into books. After he moves his family into a house where another family was murdered, the journo discovers found footage that unveils horrifying clues beyond what caused the original tragedy."
