Caesar & Otto are back with their latest cinematic misadventure. In anticipation of the film’s upcoming Halloween week DVD/VOD release, the hapless half-brothers have debuted a new clip featuring B-movie legend Brinke Stevens (Nightmare Sisters, Teenage Exorcist) in a nod to The Shining.

Written and directed by Dave Campfield (Caesar), Paranormal Halloween stars cult icons Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Vernon Wells, Felissa Rose, Deron Miller, Sean Whalen, Andre Gower and Debbie Rochon. These heroes of the low-budget silver screen join Campfield, Paul Chomicki (Otto), Ken MacFarlane, Samantha Barrios, Avi Garg, and Shawn C. Phillips in a hilarious homage to Insidious, The Conjuring, Amityville Horror, Sinister, Paranormal Activity, and more.

The October 27th DVD release of Caesar & Otto’s Paranormal Halloween will exclusively include two feature-length commentaries with director Dave Campfield and the cast and crew, The Son of Piggyzilla shorts trilogy, a tribute to Robert Z’Dar, trailers, and other videos.

Synopsis:
It’s Halloween Eve, and Caesar and Otto find themselves housesitting for the world’s most unpopular Governor, Jerry Grayson (MacFarlane). But after a series of ghostly visions, strange phenomena, and a demonic possession, the half-brothers call upon renowned exorcist Father Jason Stieger to help put a stop to this new nightmare. But in this house nothing is what it seems, and everyone is fair game for the mysterious forces at work.

Over the years several worthy shows have been cancelled by heartless TV networks, despite heartfelt campaigns by their loyal viewers to save them.  If you have a budding horror fan in the family who’s a fan of “Spooksville,” you might want to join in on the campaign to persuade Netflix to give the supernatural series another season… all the details can be found below.

From the Press Release:
Fans of “Spooksville” look to start an uproar by sending physical keys and letters to the Netflix office in Beverly Hills in order to unlock the “Spooksville” spell and have Netflix renew the television series for a second season. The key to unlocking the “Spooksville” spell and having Netflix renew the series includes strong fan and parental support. Fans and parents must send a key and letter to the Netflix office with a statement explaining why they believe there should be a second season of “Spooksville.”

Send keys and letters (or email a letter to pr@netflix.com) to the Netflix office at the following address: 335 N. Maple Drive, Suite 353, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.

In addition to sending a physical key and letter to the Netflix office, fans are encouraged to share, post, re-post, tweet, and re-tweet messages revolving around unlocking the “Spooksville” spell and spreading the word about the campaign, which will end on Halloween (October 31, 2015). Be sure to use the hashtag #‎UnlockSpooksville‬.

“Spooksville” is a live-action adventure television series starring Keean Johnson (“The Fosters”) as Adam Freeman, Katie Douglas (“Defiance”) as Sally Wilcox, Nick Purcha (“iZombie”) as Watch Waverly, and Morgan Taylor Campbell (“The Killing”) as Ann Templeton.

Based on the book series by acclaimed author Christopher Pike, “Spooksville” follows the new kid in town who discovers that he holds the key to a battle between good and evil that has been taking place for centuries in a bizarre small town that plays host to a wide array of supernatural and unexplained occurrences.

“Spooksville” is a Daytime Emmy Award-winning series and recipient of the Parents’ Choice Approved Seal. It is produced by Springville Productions, Front Street Pictures (“R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour”), and Jane Startz Productions (“The School for Good and Evil”).

10 Great Home Invasion Thrillers!

$

0

In Eli Roth’s Knock Knock, Keanu Reeves gets a visit from two innocent-looking young women and winds up becoming part of a very twisted game. With the movie hitting VOD this week, it’s the perfect time to revisit some of the greatest “home invasion” movies from years past!

purge

10. The Purge

Set in a future in which America is a totalitarian police state, The Purge takes place on the one night each year in which all crime is legal and no law enforcement or emergency services are available. While somewhat cliche’d and perhaps even a tad predictable, The Purge took the home invasion concept and used it to make an intelligent political statement. A better-received sequel followed in 2014, and a third film is in the works, making this one of horror’s new franchises.

Kidnapped

9. Kidnapped

An underrated gem, Kidnapped follows a rather standard invasion formula but uses some interesting technological approaches to turn a familiar story into a terrifying film. As the movie progresses, a split-screen effect materializes which heightens the suspense by showing the panic of the killers and the victims. Don’t expect any good feelings after watching. With one of the bleakest endings in movie history, this one will leave you feeling stunned for some time after it’s all over.

You-re-Next-Stills2

8. You’re Next

With You’re Next, the duo of Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett managed to make a home invasion movie thrilling, but also humorous. A great mix of gore and black humor, this film turns the home invasion angle on its head, turning the would-be assailants into the victims of one deadly heroine. You’re Next also merges the home invasion thriller with a dysfunctional family comedy in one of the past few years’ more twisted horror films.

Lunchmeat Resurrects Frankenstein (I Swear on My Mother’s Eyes) on VHS

As Halloween rapidly approaches, horror fans face an overwhelming array of products vying for their spare change. One of the companies hoping to snag some of this cash is Lunchmeat, which recently unearthed director Gary Cohen’s (Video Violence 1 & 2, Captives) Frankenstein (I Swear on My Mother’s Eyes), a SOV, made-for-cable flick that has unfairly slipped into obscurity. Thankfully, Lunchmeat will release a limited edition VHS just in time for Halloween. Naturally!

From the Press Release:
We’ve teamed up with the great Gary Cohen, director of cult SOV classics Video Violence 1 and 2 and Captives, to unearth this long lost slice of shot-on-video horror comedy insanity. Gary co-writes and stars in this utterly unknown film that debuted on Cablevision on Halloween night in 1983 and, after a single airing, fell into complete obscurity. And now, over 30 years later, Lunchmeat is bringing this never-before-seen low-budget trashterpiece take on the classic tale of Frankenstein back from the grave on almighty VHS in a strictly Limited Edition of 50 copies, housed in large black clamshells with two-sided, reversible artwork, committed to groovy green videocassettes peppered with extremely limited purple videocassette inserts.

The print used for the release comes directly from Gary’s archives (the only known surviving print!), keeping intact all of the grit and grain of the original analog-shot broadcast. The release will also include a video intro from Josh Schafer (yours truly!) talking about the inception of the release and an exclusive intro from star and co-writer Gary Cohen, explaining how the production came to be and why it’s been obscured for all these years. Here’s an excerpt from that intro with Gary Cohen, just to give you a little taste of history on this flick:

“I must admit, this whole project is shrouded in secrecy… at the time, what is now Comcast, I believe it was Cablevision back then… had a studio in New Jersey, and they were advertising, I think, for people who wanted to do some kind of cable access shows… my friend Richard Dominick (of Jerry Springer fame) decided he would pitch a project for Halloween and write this version of Frankenstein. We got together, he wrote a script about Frankenstein, and we used a lot of the actors who you’ll recognize from Video Violence, who were all a part of Celebration Playhouse, this theater group in New Jersey. I believe we had about a day to film this thing, filmed on video, on three and a quarter inch video… and if memory serves, we were high or drunk or something when we we’re doing it… Once it aired, everybody disavowed any knowledge of the project. It is truly unique; it’s an oddity. I can’t believe here in 2015, it’s resurfaced, but so be it! I hope you get a kick out of it.” – Gary Cohen

Here at Lunchmeat, we’re certain you will. We wanted to re-animate this movie because we believe it’s just such an amazing piece of ultra-obscure shot-on-video history, and for fans of Gary Cohen’s work, it not only gives you a vision of pre-Video Violence times, but is also guaranteed to make you laugh your analog ass off with its profusion of dark comedy, groovy low-budget gore, and absolutely unbridled, over-the-top performances.

If you’re interested in scoring your very own copy of Gary Cohen’s lost classic Frankenstein (I Swear on My Mother’s Eyes), swing by the Lunchmeat website and indulge!

Director Jimmy Lee Combs and writer Kevon Ward’s horror/comedy Hans Crippleton: Talk to the Hans looks balls-out insane. Seriously — balls-out insane. I have a very odd and dark sense of humor, and Crippleton seems specifically designed to appeal to my admittedly warped funny bone. To help promote the flick’s upcoming release via Uncork’d Entertainment next month, the fine folks behind this deranged horror outing have unveiled a very unhinged exclusive clip.

We know you need an official synopsis. Here you go:

A disturbing mystery that lurks on an old backwoods farm is brought to new light when a traveling camera team arrives… seeking the one and only Hans Crippleton.

Jimmy Lee Combs and Kevon Ward’s Hans Crippleton: Talk to the Hans stars Andy Hankins, Lyle DeRose, and Emma Moody. Uncork’d Entertainment will unleash the cinematic insanity on home video on November 17. Check out the exclusive clip and the utterly insane trailer below.

YouTube Space LA’s Monster Hunter Gives Viewers 360 Degrees of Horror

The innovative and impossibly creative folks at YouTube Space LA are delivering some incredible videos this month — if you haven’t experienced Eat You Alive yet, then definitely give that a go — and their latest creation, Monster Hunter, is no different. The two-minute short film unfolds from the perspective of a monster as it hunts for its prey: a crying child. It’s pretty creepy.

By using a wearable rig for the 360-degree camera, viewers can watch in horror as the titular creature hunts for its latest pint-sized snack. Similar to Eat You Alive, multiple viewings are a must, as you can experience the events from several unique perspectives. I’m a huge fan of interactive horror, and the masterminds at YouTube Space LA are doing some truly remarkable things right now.

Don’t take my word for it: Watch Monster Hunter in 360 degrees below!

Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller Reteaming with NBC for Amazing Stories Revival

If you were a fan of 80’s TV series “Amazing Stories,” NBC’s fantasy/horror/sci-fi anthology created by Steven Spielberg, then you should be happy to hear this news. The network is giving it a reboot, helmed by none other than “Hannibal” EP/showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Per EW, Fuller will executive produce and write a pilot script for the project – an hourlong weekly anthology series telling fantastic, strange, and supernatural stories. Apparently Spielberg is not involved.  The new version will be produced by Universal Television with Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank (“Under the Dome,” “Extant”) serving as executive producers along with Fuller.

The original ran for two seasons (1985-87); it earned 12 Emmy nominations and received five awards.

We’ll keep you posted on developments, but our eyes are mostly on Fuller’s other current project: Starz’s upcoming “American Gods,” based on Neil Gaiman’s novel.

Tomorrow night, along with airing “Fear: Buried Alive,” A&E is kicking off a new docuseries, “Cursed: The Bell Witch,” which follows a direct descendant of one of the most infamous ghost stories in America, one that originated in my home state of Tennessee, in fact. Intrigued? Then read on for the details, trailer, and a sneak peek.

“Cursed: The Bell Witch” premieres Monday, October 26th, at 10/9c on A&E.

Synopsis:
John Ceallach is a direct descendant of Tennessee land owner John Bell, who, legend has it, had a child out of wedlock with a local witch named Kate Batts in the early 1800s. It is believed he murdered her to cover his tracks, and in turn she cursed his family bloodline from her grave; the first-born male of each generation would either be driven insane or suffer a mysterious, untimely death.

Since then, five Bell men are reported to have suffered this fate; and today, Ceallach finds that his 14-year-old boy could be next in line. Ceallach and his friend Chad embark on a hunt to unbury the origin of the curse and break its spell before it reaches his only son.

Internet Nutjob Wants Us to Help Ban Halloween and Horror

Here at Dread Central we get lots of amusing e-mails, but this one may be our favorite of the year… if only for the opening sentence. Here it is unedited in its original form.

Satan has an orgasm when you celebrate the holiday known as Halloween. You may think it’s the day where women dress as cute little bumblebees, show off a little titty, and then people watch a few horror movies; but it’s not. The true history starts 3000 years ago. On October 31st that year Satan disguised some of his demons as humans (costumes), had them decapitate the innocent (their heads were displayed in Hell like jack o’ lanterns afterwards), and then their souls were eaten (and Satan’s exact words were “Oh, baby. How sweet”) which is why we eat candy on that day. Don’t you get it? In these traditions we are the ones becoming the demons by imitating what they did on that horrific day. You horror fans have got to stop celebrating that day and never acknowledge it again. It’s a terrible thing. As a matter of fact, horror celebrates what the demons did to us but you still watch it. Ask yourself why. Please stop celebrating Halloween.

Ghost Team is about a team of ghost hunters who get more than they bargained for when they embark on their own paranormal investigation.

The makers of Ghost Team say it will be the first feature to use the new Steadicam Tango, an innovation by cinematographer Garrett Brown on his Steadicam invention.

Peter Warren wrote the script, and Tandem Pictures’ Julie Christeas and Schuyler Weiss are producing with Mott Street Pictures’ Alex Sagalchik and Irving. Preferred Content’s Kevin Iwashinia is exec producing, and he’ll be the U.S. sales agent for the film.

Psycho Complete Collection Blu-ray Set Coming to Australia

Franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and Hellraiser have recently been collected together in must-own Blu-ray sets, and just in time for Christmas, the Psycho series gets much the same treatment over in Australia. Make mother happy by reading on for the full release details!

From the Press Release:
Via Vision Entertainment is thrilled to announce the release of Psycho: The Complete Collection. For the first time ever Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and its three sequels starring Anthony Perkins will be available, together with the 1998 Gus Van Sant remake of Psycho, on Blu-ray. Release streets on December 2nd.

In 1960 it changed the way movies were publicized, reshaped the expectations of audiences and established a new genre. From the iconic opening recently celebrated in the Fargo TV series, to the mesmerizing musical score from Bernard Herrmann, the hectic montage synonymous with the shower sequence and other bravura set pieces, Psycho remains an unnerving and breathtaking example of Hollywood cinema. The slasher film was born. A simple premise of a bored secretary (Janet Leigh) who hits the road with a cache of stolen money is flipped on its head when she checks into the wrong roadside motel run by Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). Psycho is “still terrifying after all these years” notes Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide.

In 1983 Perkins revived Norman Bates in the sequel helmed by Australian filmmaker Richard Franklin. After 20 years imprisoned in a secure hospital Bates is judged sane by a psychiatric report and released. He returns to the gothic family home. When he takes in a young female lodger (Meg Tilly), the old demons resurface. Psycho II also features Vera Miles, reprising her role from the original movie, Robert Loggia as Norman’s psychiatrist and Dennis Franz as the unscrupulous motel manager in Norman’s absence.

Psycho III, directed by Perkins, sees a runaway nun seek refuge at the Bates Motel. Unfortunately for her she shares the same initials as Marion Crane, the original victim. A fledgling love affair begins between her and Norman, but his demanding mother is not impressed by her son’s choice of partner and is soon exerting her parental influence.

Joe Stefano, the original scriptwriter, returns as writer on the final sequel Psycho IV in 1990. Bates is reformed and happily married to a psychologist. However, a phone-in show on matricide stirs within him the violent urges and he embarks on another stalk and slash crusade.

Acclaimed director Gus Van Sant remade Psycho in 1998 with Vince Vaughan (True Detective) in the role of Norman Bates. A Meta experiment from the director of Elephant for a new generation, Psycho incorporates the latest innovations in digital photography and CGI effects. Anne Heche (Donnie Brasco) is Marion Crane. The support cast includes Julianne Moore, Viggo Mortensen, William H. Macy, Phillip Baker Hall, James Remar and Robert Forster.

In addition to these remastered features on Blu-ray, Psycho: The Complete Collection also includes the DVD of the TV movie Bates Motel. After 20 years locked away Alex West (Bud Cort) realizes Norman Bates is the father he never had. He inherits the motel following Norman’s passing and assisted by a wise cracking drifter (Lori Petty), Alex reopens the infamous site and soon attracts an array of strange guests. Bates Motel was a feature length TV movie broadcast on NBC, a rarely seen gem now available.

Psycho: The Complete Collection is crammed with commentaries, featurettes and informative extras and also boasts the famous Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut audio interview. The Making of Psycho (94 mins) is a feature length documentary detailing the long gestating production while in addition to that there is a new two part documentary The Psycho Legacy, on 2-disc DVD.

Housed in a Limited Edition Collectible Slip Case, this is the first time ever the sequels have been made available on Blu-ray and Psycho IV is a global Blu-ray premiere. With the acclaimed Anthony Hopkins vehicle Hitchcock nominated for an Oscar and the Soho cable show Bates Motel entering its fourth season, the story of Psycho continues to endure and terrify like nothing before it or since.
