From the Press Release:
New Form Digital announced today the premiere of The Fourth Door, an original 12-episode series co-created by Tony E. Valenzuela, the award-winning writer, director and founder of YouTube’s top horror and sci-fi channel BlackBoxTV, and actor and producer Jarrett Sleeper. The Fourth Door, which originated as a short film commissioned during New Form Digital’s first Incubator Series, will debut exclusively on go90, a mobile first, social entertainment platform, and is the first of six original series New Form is creating for go90.

The Fourth Door follows a young woman named Lain (Coleman) who wakes up in the strange world of Limbo with very few memories of how she got there or who she is. She soon meets a young astronaut named Colin (Miller) who joins her as they adventure through a supernatural world made from old memories and dreams to rescue the man she loves (Antosy) from the King of Limbo (Graceffa) before he can consume them all in his infinite nothingness.

Monique Coleman (High School Musical franchise) is the series lead, with Reid Miller, YouTube sensation Joey Graceffa, Jarrett Sleeper, who also co-created The Fourth Door, and Michael Antosy also starring.

“New Form Digital was proud to work with Tony and Jarrett to create an original and suspenseful story that is sure to leave viewers on the edge of their seats,” said Kathleen Grace, Chief Creative Officer for New Form Digital. “It takes this level of creativity and storytelling to stand out and we’re confident The Fourth Door will shine on go90 as a high-quality production.”

“The Fourth Door is also about creating new mythology. It is a time in our culture for new heroes, with different faces, diverse backstories and new ideas for how to solve the problems which plague us as people. I think Lain’s story is a beautifully intricate one, but my son keeps reminding me that it’s just an adventure story,” said Tony E. Valenzuela, co-creator and director of The Fourth Door. “From love and regret to adventure and laughter, this series explores a profound range of emotions and we’re so eager to share this wild journey,” said Jarrett Sleeper, actor and co-creator of The Fourth Door.”

The series launch will be supported by a national pop-up tour featuring an experiential installation that takes visitors through the world of Colin’s ‘demons’ and will also offer a chance to meet the cast and creators in select markets. Tour stops include Phoenix, AZ (Oct. 29); Tucson, AZ (Oct. 30); Austin, TX (Nov. 5); Nashville, TN (Nov. 7); Stillwater, OK (Nov. 9); and Hollywood, CA (Nov. 13). The highly anticipated Season 2 of this French psychological thriller will make its debut on Saturday, October 31, at 10 PM ET/PT on SundanceTV. To give viewers a chance to catch up, the network is airing a marathon of Season 1 on Sunday, October 18th, with back-to-back episodes beginning at 6:00 AM ET/PT.

The second season picks up six months after the deceased disappeared into the mountains with Simon (Pierre Perrier); Camille (Yara Pilartz); her mother, Claire (Anne Consigny); Julie (Céline Sallette); and the mysterious youngster Victor (Swann Nambotin). Since then, nothing has been heard of them. Now, Adèle (Clotilde Hesme) is about to give birth to Simon’s child, part of the town is still flooded, and the dam remains under surveillance. Rumors abound that the dead have returned, but the authorities refuse to believe them. The rare witnesses have chosen to remain silent or are not taken seriously, among them Léna (Jenna Thiam) and her father, Jérôme (Frédéric Pierrot), who have not given up hope of finding Claire and Camille. M. Night Shyamalan Does a Split in January 2017

We’ve been talking about M. Night Shyamalan’s latest supernatural thriller for a while now, even though it didn’t have a title, a plot, or a release date. Today we have 2 of the 3.

According to The Wrap, the film is entitled Split and will be hitting theatres on January 20, 2017. Plot details are still under wraps.

James McAvoy, Anya Taylor Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula, and Haley Lu Richardson star. Given Jason Blum’s involvement, the movie’s budget will be relatively small, which would be more on par with Shyamalan’s The Visit, which overperformed at the box office, bringing in $83.1 million worldwide.

Marc Bienstock will also produce, while Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider are on board as exec producers. Production is expected to start this November in Philadelphia. The film is not currently set up at a studio.

Resident Evil 4 Coming To Wii U

When Resident Evil 4 was originally released for the Gamecube back in 2005, its director, and the creator of the series, Shinji Mikami, said that he would cut off his own head should it ever appear on another console. Well, it was later ported to PS2, PC, Wii, Mobile Phone, PS3, Xbox 360, and now, Wii U. You’d better start sharpening your axe, Mikami. At the rate that Capcom are releasing the game on any system that moves, it almost seems like they’re daring him. They must be sore about him leaving them to help form Platinum Games, which originally had most of its products published by Sega.

The Wii U version will be released on October 29, as announced in the following tweet from Nintendo of Europe:

Unfortunately, not only will the Wii U version only be available in Europe via the Nintendo eShop for the time being, but it will be a port of the Wii Edition released in 2007 rather than the HD versions released for the PS3 and 360 in 2011. Sigh.

But still, this is a great treat for horror fans who own a Wii U this Halloween. Not only is Resident Evil 4 one of the defining games of the sixth generation, but also one of the most influential games of all time. Not only did it re-invent over the shoulder shooting mechanics, which have been used in pretty much every third person action game ever since, it featured groundbreaking enemy AI, a unique spin on quicktime events, and some of the best visuals that had ever been seen at the time of its release (all the more impressive as the Gamecube was seen as an underpowered console). So although the non-stop ports may be getting tiresome, the more people that play this extraordinary game, the better.

As the game’s creepy merchant would say, “stranger, stranger, now that’s a video game!

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood Story DLC Inbound

Until Dawn was a huge treat for horror gamers, so the news of a story driven expansion practically has us jumping for joy.

The news came from the big man himself, the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios for PlayStation, Shuhei Yoshida, followed by the video below, at the Paris Games Week. Called Rush of Blood, it will be an on-rails experience set in a theme park and will optimize use of PlayStation VR.

And yes, I know what you’re thinking, you’re disappointed with their decision to make the game on-rails as it will limit freedom and exploration, but hey, at least we’re getting more Until Dawn. Let’s hope that Sony realize how strong the potential of a franchise is.

Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition (Video Game)

Darksiders 2Published by Nordic Games

Developed by Gunfire Games

Rated M for Mature

Available for Xbox One (reviewed), PS4, and PC

When Darksiders II came out in August of 2012, we fell in love with it. Now a remaster which has been poorly dubbed with the worst pun imaginable – the Deathinitive Edition – is here three years later, and it’s home to the game and all of the DLC. So, how does it fare? Are fond memories exactly that? Or is there something to be said here that makes it unique?

Truth be told, the game looks better, but only slightly. The graphics are on par with the high-end PC version years ago, but is that enough to warrant another purchase? If you haven’t already played the game, absolutely! If you have… unless you really want it on your Xbox One or PlayStation 4, not so much.

Remasters have become the new norm now, and truth be told they have benefited some titles such as The Last of Us or, more recently, the Uncharted series and God of War III. Speaking of the latter, watching Kratos maim his enemies at a full 60 frames per second remains magical. Too bad the same cannot be said for Darksiders II because the game is still locked at just 30. That doesn’t mean it looks bad. Hell, because of the game’s art style, it looks damned gorgeous, but an upgrade to the frame rate would have at least made this feel a bit more worth it.

In the end, despite being The Deathinitive Edition, the remastering of Darksiders II feels like just an excuse to remind people that this game existed and the franchise should carry on. Still, at an MSRP of 30 bucks, it’s kind of a hard sell to anyone but newbies or diehards. If only the original game had been included. That REALLY would have been “Deathinitive.”

Original game review below:

Darksiders II follows the story of the previous title as players assume the role of the horseman Death trying to clear his brother War’s name. In the first Darksiders War is blamed with prematurely starting the apocalypse and wiping out all of humanity. You start this game off on your trusty steed as you head toward one of the many sprawling areas – The Tower of Secrets.

Death’s main goal is to retrace War’s steps from each city and dungeon he entered as a means to try to find some type of clues to clear War’s name and restore humanity. The story unfolds through well designed (if not a bit graphically antiquated at times) cut-scenes and dialogue that is carried out with NPCs. Every location you venture to has its own side quests and dungeon areas, and the duties you’re tasked with as the most feared of all the horsemen range from finding hidden treasure to destroying enemies to your standard fetching quests.

In Darksiders II the best part of the experience is exploration. It is simply massive in scope and dwarfs anything presented in the first game. Traveling through the many creepy dungeons, each with its own hidden dangers, is a harrowing task; but Death is easily up to the challenge. Darksiders II combines several elements of combat, platform, and multi-level puzzles with an already satisfying combat style. The combat is fluid, making Death seem more agile and responsive. As you travel, you will also come across rare possessed weapons that are fully upgradable. The skill tree ties in to the combat system with two main trees, Harbinger and Necromancer. Players have the choice to upgrade at will to either of these trees as they progress through the storyline. Essentially one player’s rendition of the character of Death will likely be drastically different from another’s. The character is fully customizable from head to toe so you can tailor your horseman specifically to your liking.

Another area in which Darksiders II shines is its boss battles. All of the questing and fetching you have to do to complete the game will seem all the more worth it when your eyes fall upon some of the most gigantic bosses to ever be featured in a video game. We’re talking giant-sized and gory fun!

Darksiders II’s soundtrack sets just the right mood with various rock and ambient elements. The soundtrack adds just the right touch to the mostly amazing visuals that work together to give an overall sense of despair and horror.

There is hardly anything to complain about in Darksiders II as it creates a dark, nasty, and near perfect overall experience. It has great replay value with all of the side quests and the Crucible mode DLC, which will have you battling waves of enemies back-to-back for hours. If you loved the first Darksiders, then you will have no trouble falling in love with possibility one of the best sequels ever made.

Sundance Explores The Shining Subliminally

Stanley Kubrick’s version of Stephen King’s The Shining has been studied, torn apart, put together, further dissected, and then reassembled. Rightly so, too, as the film is a classic in every sense of the word.

Our buddies over at SundanceTV have put up a rather interesting article regarding some of the subliminal messages that are strewn throughout the film. There are a couple of examples below. Hit that link for even more.

Bullshit or not bullshit? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Sell Your Soul at 666
At exactly 66 minutes and 6 seconds into the film, we cut from an image of the very devilish Lloyd the bartender to a shot of Jack taking his first drink, a drink he said he’d give his “goddamn soul” for just a few minutes prior. We’ll just leave you with that one…

The Black Curtain
In the scene in which Jack telephones Wendy to tell her he’s got the job at the Overlook Hotel, at the far right of the screen, a black curtain is seen covering the entrance, tucked behind a radiator. This black curtain is not seen in any other scene of the film; however, we will see a curtain tucked behind a radiator later in the film, in the Torrences’ apartment living room. When the Torrences are first introduced to their quarters, the living room curtain is to the left of the archway, separating the living room from the bedroom, but in every scene after they have crossed the threshold, the curtain is to the right of the archway. As the black curtain scene is bookended by two scenes showing Danny talking to Tony in the bathroom mirror and immediately precedes Danny’s vision of the bloody elevator, the black curtain functions as an omen that, once broken, seals the occupant’s doom.

Robert Mearns’ Kill Game arrives a few weeks after Halloween, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s one you should pass up. After all, you’re a horror fan — you consume this stuff morning, noon, and night, 365 days a year. To make this purchase as easy as possible, Mearns and company are offering the flick up on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. How accommodating is that?

From the Press Release:
Seemingly innocent pranks turn deadly in the shocking horror adventure KILL GAME. Headlined by newcomer Sari Sanchez and also starring Joe Adler (The Maze Runner, “The Mentalist”), Pierson Fode (Indigenous), Michael Galante (Boy Meets Girl), and Laura Ashley Samuels (In Time), KILL GAME arrives on Digital HD December 1 and on Blu-ray Disc (exclusively at Best Buy) and DVD January 5 from Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM) and Vantage Media International. Written and directed by Robert Mearns and based on his short Prank, the frightening film follows an unstoppable masked murderer who is out for blood.

KILL GAME begins as a group of good-looking, shallow high school teens amuse themselves by pulling pranks on less popular classmates and teachers. However, the teasing is not so harmless when one night a prank goes horribly wrong and an innocent boy is killed. Covering their tracks by masking the incident as a drowning accident, the group lives with the horrible secret for years, never realizing that their actions will soon haunt them… with deadly results.

Five years later, they are shocked when one of them is murdered by a sinister serial killer donning a frightening mask. Soon each of the group of friends is hunted down one by one in a manner that eerily mirrors the pranks they once pulled in high school. Whether it’s karmic retribution or the dead teen’s spirit out for blood, one thing is certain… no one is laughing now.

What happens when horror movie maniacs decide to retire? Do they end up spending the rest of their days in some sunny town in the wilds of Florida, or do they find a quiet suburban neighborhood to wile away the time? Travis Greene and Jason Bice explore this concept in Hangin’ with Mr. Krueger, a delightfully enjoyable web cartoon that has arrived just in time for Halloween.

Greene and Bice put a finer point on the storyline:

Hangin’ with Mr. Krueger is a short animated sitcom, following a now retired Fred Krueger, the new boy in town, Travis, and a slew of other beloved slashers, villains, and monsters.”

After watching Cannibal Holocaust for the 100th time, have you ever wanted to continue the adventure with a group of friends sitting around a table? Ryan Sheffield and Brad Dougher at Craft Fair Games are attempting to make such an experience happen with Ferox, a tabletop game that recreates the drama, tension, and gore associated with cannibal exploitation horror movies. Here’s the problem: They still need some cash to make it happen, which is where you come in.

Before we stick a link in your face, let’s explore the game’s concept:

THIS IS FEROX, an asymmetrical card-battling game for 2 players, inspired by (and satirizing) the cannibal exploitation horror films of the early ’80s. One player assumes the role of a documentary film crew that has crash-landed in the jungles of an uncharted island and must escape at all costs. The other player controls four tribes of natives who have banded together to rid their homeland of the sadistic, drug-addled invaders—and some of them have a very literal taste for blood…

The Film Crew must survive. The Natives must retaliate. ALL MUST KILL!

Chock-full of vicious dice-chucking, light deck-building, and retro horror nostalgia, Ferox is the most fun you’ll ever have killing and eating your friends!

COMPONENT DETAILS:

148 Cards (fully-illustrated, linen)
65 Wooden Cubes
11 Custom Dice
1 Rulebook (24 pages, full-color)

If you’d like to add some flesh-eating cannibals to your tabletop gaming experiences, then you need Ferox in your life. Head over to the Kickstarter campaign page to check it out.
