The Witcher Heading to the Big Screen

$

With Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed forthcoming, it seems that we may finally be entering the age of good video game movies. And now we have another film to add to that list. Platige reports that The Sean Daniel Company is adapting The Witcher in time for 2017. Tomasz Bagiński, known for his Oscar-nominated short The Cathedral, will direct, and “Buffy writer Thania St. John will provide the screenplay.

Yeah, okay, you can argue that it’s not exactly a video game adaptation as the series originated as a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, but let’s face it… the film wouldn’t be happening were it not for the games. They made the series huge. Their popularity will be the film’s key selling point.

As diehard fans will remind you, this won’t be the first time that The Witcher has been adapted into a film. There was a piece of trash released in 2001 called The Hexer, which was a cobbled together mess of footage from an equally crap TV series, but the less said about that, the better.

As is the custom when one of these announcements is made, expect fans to enter into endless debates about who should play Geralt of Rivia. Interestingly, this will be the first in a series, so don’t feel to depressed if your favorite characters don’t appear as they could show up as the series progresses.

Real Life Los Feliz Murder Mansion Spawning Horror Movie

It was back in September that Jeff Maysh penned an article over on Medium about a California mansion that has sat unoccupied since the late ’50s, allegedly haunted in the wake of a horrific murder-suicide. It’s the stuff horror movies are made of, and now the true story is becoming one.

Per The Wrap, The Coalition Group and writer Joshua Malkin (Cabin Fever 2) are developing a film based on Maysh’s article. The story centers around the infamous home on Glendower Place in Los Feliz, California, where a man killed his wife and attempted to murder his small children before poisoning himself.

The home has not been lived in or touched for more than 50 years, and many relics from that fateful night are still there in their original location — the home frozen in time during its darkest hour.

Luisa Iskin and John Wunder are producing the Los Feliz Murder Mansion movie for The Coalition Group.

Ted Geoghegan Set to Unleash Satanic Panic on Horror Fans

It’s no secret that we here at Dread Central are huge fans of Ted Geoghegan’s We Are Still Here, so we’ve been anxious to see what he has planned as a follow-up.  Today our patience has been rewarded as the first word on Satanic Panic, from Geoghegan, Dark Sky Films, and Snowfort Pictures, has arrived.  Read on for the early details!

From the Press Release:
Dark Sky Films and Snowfort Pictures have announced they will team with director Ted Geoghegan on SATANIC PANIC, the follow-up to his critical and commercial horror hit We Are Still Here.

We Are Still Here, Geoghegan’s debut, is a wintry haunted house tale that premiered to rave reviews at SXSW 2015 and currently has a remarkable score 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. MPI released the film domestically in the fall through its genre division, Dark Sky Films, and saw it quickly hit No. 1 on iTunes Horror.

The new project re-teams Geoghegan with producer Travis Stevens and Greg Newman. The original screenplay is being written by Grady Hendrix, whose recent best-selling novel Horrorstör is in development at Fox Television with “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz.

SATANIC PANIC centers on a minimum-wage delivery girl who is forced into a night-long battle with the rich and affluent leaders of a suburban community after discovering they’re part of a satanic cult. Casting will begin soon.

Geoghegan (pictured below) explained his goal with the action-based horror film: “Equal parts supernatural horror and survival thriller, the film hinges on smart, funny dialogue and a clever, surprisingly badass female hero. A snarky, splattery takedown of the 1%, it places a trod-upon heroine up against the literally soulless societal upper crust. The banter and blood come fast and furious, and we’re hoping to leave very little time to breathe between gasps and gags.”

Greg Newman, executive VP of MPI/Dark Sky Films, said: “We Are Still Here was incredibly well received by both critics and audiences alike. We’re happy to be working again with Ted Geoghegan, who has already created a unique voice and vision for modern horror. We’re equally thrilled to be teaming up once again with Snowfort following our previous successes together on both We Are Still Here and Starry Eyes.”

Producer Travis Stevens added, “I want to make something fun and fast and slick and sick. A film that plays like a good heavy metal song. A film that gets your heart rate up to the point where you burn calories while watching it.”

Described as a “psychological thriller with a twisted sense of humor,” Trouble Sleeping has just hit our radar; and while we’re not sure how Dread-worthy it will turn out to be, we thought we’d share a few images and the film’s first trailer and let you guys decide if you want to see more.

Starring Billy Zane, Vanessa Angel, Rick Otto, Ingrid Eskeland, Kale Clauson, and Fred Stoller, Trouble Sleeping is directed by Robert Adetuyi. It was produced by Greg McKay and Roger Fex and lensed by two-time Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Roy H. Wagner. The production was financed independently, and all domestic and foreign rights are currently available in all media.

For more info visit the official Trouble Sleeping website, and “like” Trouble Sleeping on Facebook.

Synopsis:
TROUBLE SLEEPING is a psychological thriller about a high-strung, middle-aged woman whose stepson, Justin, is returning home. Four years ago, Justin discovered his beloved father’s body on the floor by the piano. The tragic events proved too much for the young man, so he spent the next four years in a mental hospital.

Our story begins with Justin’s psychiatrist telling his stepmom that Justin’s ready to come home. Dr. Gilbert warns that Justin will be “a little socio-behaviorally displaced for a while.” Despite the situation, Vanessa and her new husband, Alex, are determined to make the best of it; after all, in two weeks on his 21st birthday, Justin will take control of his inheritance, which includes the country estate they’re presently living on. However, Vanessa and her new, younger (quite handsome) husband have no intention of letting Justin get his hands on the money.

To top it all off, Alex has agreed to let Ph.D. student August Von Bullier stay at the estate while she researches a book on Vanessa’s late husband, Charles. But August is not the person she seems, and as she attempts to unravel the secrets of the house, Vanessa becomes suspicious of her presence, as she knows all too well Alex’s attractiveness to younger women.

While the four tortured souls play a treacherous game of cat and mouse, Vanessa is haunted by the ghost of her dead husband. It’s no wonder she can’t sleep…

Camille Keaton Returns for I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu

Not content with just a single I Spit on Your Grave franchise, here comes another. This time we’re talking about a direct sequel to the original! Read on for details and the first image.

From the Press Release:
37 Years after the release of the controversial 1978 cult classic I Spit on Your Grave, Camille Keaton has reunited with director Meir Zarchi to reprise her role of Jennifer Hills in its direct sequel, I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu.

I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu is the only sequel that shares characters as well as continuity with the original 1978 motion picture Day of the Woman, aka I Spit on Your Grave.

Following her brutal rape, Jennifer wrote a best-selling account of her ordeal and of the controversial trial in which she was accused of taking the law into her own hands and ruthlessly killing her assailants. In the small town where the rape and revenge took place, the relatives of the four rapists she killed are furious that the court declared her not guilty and resolve to take justice into their own hands.

The original I Spit on Your Grave was inspired by Meir Zarchi’s experience with a victim of rape. After stumbling upon a teenage girl in a park in the aftermath of a violent assault, Zarchi began to imagine how a woman in this situation might fantasize about revenge. Moreover, he wanted to depict to the audience the real horrors of rape.

In this new chapter, Jennifer Hills is joined by her daughter, Christy (Jamie Bernadette), as well as a variety of new characters, including Maria Olsen, who plays the role of Johnny’s wife, the gas station attendant Jennifer castrated; Jim Tavare in the role of Herman, whose son Matthew was hung by Jennifer; as well as by actors Jonathan Peacy, Jeremy Ferdman, Holgie Forrester, Roy Allen, and Alexandra Kenworthy.

“I always envisioned Camille Keaton returning to continue the saga of Jennifer Hills,” said Zarchi. “Getting together with Camille to film the sequel was a surreal, deja-vu-like experience.”

Produced by Terry Zarchi and Jan O’Connell, I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu is currently in post-production.

AFM 2015: Celebrate Nina Forever on Valentine’s Day

More news is coming in from AFM as the Blaine Brothers’ darkly comedic romantic horror story Nina Forever (review), has found itself some distro!

From the Press Release:
Epic Pictures Group will release the critically acclaimed horror/romance film NINA FOREVER on February 12, 2016, Valentine’s Day weekend. The announcement was made today by Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald and Co-Founder Shaked Berenson. Epic Pictures acquired the film following its world premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, where it received widespread critical acclaim and generated strong word-of-mouth buzz from audiences. StudioCanal UK will also release the film in the United Kingdom. Epic Pictures is currently selling additional international territories at the American Film Market (AFM).

Written and directed by Ben and Chris Blaine, NINA FOREVER was honored with multiple British Independent Film Awards nominations this week, including Best Debut Director for the Blaine Brothers and Most Promising Newcomer for lead actress Abigail Hardingham. The film was previously recognized with the Best Feature award at FrightFest 2015.

A darkly comedic romantic horror story exploring love and grief, NINA FOREVER follows Holly (Abigail Hardingham) as she begins a relationship with her co-worker Rob (Cian Barry), who is grieving over the recent death of his girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) from a motorcycle accident. Holly has fallen for Rob and is determined to help him though his grief. Yet, every time they make love, Nina appears… tangled, bloody, and still fixated on Rob. Holly doesn’t freak out and run – she can deal with the dead girl sharing their bed, their lives, their minds. If it’s what Rob needs, it’s what she’ll do, regardless of the consequences.

“NINA FOREVER offers a strong alternative to audiences sick of the standard, overly sappy Valentine’s Day fare,” commented Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald. “The film smartly mixes humor, horror, and romance elements in a film that is surprisingly touching and thought-provoking.

Epic Pictures Co-Founder Shaked Berneson added, “Similar to It Follows, Nina Forever appeals to wider audiences because of its subtext. Unlike pure horror films, it’s a relationship-horror story in which well-drawn characters drive the story.”

NINA FOREVER is produced by Cassandra Sigsgaard of Jeva Films. Executive producers include Ben Gallop and Andy Gordon.

AFM 2015: Olga Kurylenko Is an Android

Thanks to Deadline, we have news from AFM that the studio Fortitude International is producing an upcoming sci-fi thriller called Android, which will star Olga Kurylenko. Set on a lonely spaceship, it follows a grieving scientist who creates robotic replicas of his wife and son, only for them to turn on him and threaten the future of humanity.

The fact that she’s a robot would explain her performance in Hitman

It’s refreshing to see that Kurylenko’s still in the business because, let’s face it, with a few exceptions, her career basically consists of one bad movie after another. But there’s still time for her to fix things, and Android could just be the film that finally helps her get back on track.

Niall Johnson (writer of White Noise; co-writer/director of Keeping Mum) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Matt O’Reilly, and production starts in February.

It’s a Cruel, Cruel Summer in this Trailer

British horror movies are often a mixed bag. For every Dog Soldiers, we get a Doghouse. For every Shaun of the Dead, we get a Cockneys vs. Zombies. The latest Brit horror flick, Cruel Summer, from co-writers/directors Craig Newman and Phillip Escott, looks like it could turn out to be something special because judging from the trailer, it actually tries to be new and original rather than just rehashing the same old shtick.

And while the words “Inspired by a True Story” should always be approached with caution these days as it’s usually a sign that the filmmakers are being overly pretentious, we do at least appear to be getting some of those top quality performances that usually come with movies based on true events.

Oh, and by the way, unless you’re British, you’ll probably be unfamiliar with the TV shows mentioned in the synopsis below. And believe me… you’ll wish it stayed that way.

Synopsis:
Autism sufferer Danny (Richard Pawulski) escapes the inner city and heads out to the country as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Little does he know, that bitter yob Nicholas (Danny Miller – “Emmerdale,” “Scott & Bailey”) is hunting him, stemming from a lie created by the enamoured and envious Julia (Natalie Martins – Miracle Grow, Tag). With the help of new boy Calvin (Reece Douglas – “Waterloo Road,” The Knife That Killed Me), the three youths close in on the innocent Danny, as Nicholas’ behaviour grows erratic and increasingly more violent. As tensions rise within the trio, Julia and Calvin must decide if they are capable of going through with Nicholas’ deadly plan.

I used to be normal… happy… well-adjusted… but that was before…

Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Sideways) and Richard Cox (Cruising) star in this humorous thriller about the bizarre happenings that occur in a prestigious boarding school. It seems to Andrea Miller (Madsen) that the upper-classmen act like robots. They’re the perfect students – dedicated, involved, and loyal. Their clothes are perfectly pressed and their hair is perfectly styled. It seems that the teachers have something to do with this ingratiating behavior. And when Andrea, the new kid at school, sees her friends turning into clones, she starts to suspect the worst.

The film features a great supporting cast including Sherilyn Fenn (“Twin Peaks,” “Ray Donovan”), Scott Coffey (Mullholland Drive, Lost Highway), and Paul Feig, who would go on to create the TV series “Freaks and Geeks” and direct such films as Spy, Bridesmaids, and the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters.

When a show is as wildly successful as “The Walking Dead,” it’s only a matter of time before similar projects go into development. In the wake of spinoff series “Fear the Walking Dead,” we’re getting word that AMC is looking to provide a home for George Romero’s Empire of the Dead!

As we reported a few months back, the Romero-created comic series, which ran for 15 issues, is getting a small screen adaptation, and according to news outlet WHAS 11, it’s going to be taking a bite out of AMC. The news comes courtesy of an interview with artist Arthur Suydam.

This just got signed to AMC,” said Suydam at the Louisville Comic-Con, holding up an issue of Empire of the Dead. “The new big zombie series on AMC is expected to be this one right here.”

The series will be written by Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson.

Romero’s iconic 1968 film Night of the Living Dead conceived the idea of a zombie apocalypse. Empire of the Dead mixes in vampires with zombies.
