Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

A Sneak Peek of the Ghost Adventures Season Six Finale with Guest Investigator Vince Neil and Others

On April 27th the Season Six finale of "Ghost Adventures" airs, and it will rock as Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil; Bruce Westcott, Frank Sinatra’s former pianist; and Jamie Gold, the 2006 World Series of Poker champion, join the investigation of The Riviera Hotel in Vegas.

The hotel has built a name for itself by having a roster of celebrity clientele (including the icon Frank Sinatra) and former connections to the Chicago Mafia. For years the “Ghost Adventures” crew – Zak Bagans, Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin – have investigated some of the scariest and most notoriously haunted places in the world. In each episode the trio interview eyewitnesses and historians at each location, arming themselves with the stories of the ghosts, which they later confront during their dusk-to-dawn lockdowns. Then they review and analyze their findings with some of the most-respected experts and specialists in the paranormal field.

"Ghost Adventures" Episode 6.07, "The Riviera Hotel" (airing 4/27/12 on Travel Channel)
In this episode Zak, Nick, and Aaron visit The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Built in 1955, it’s one of the oldest hotels and casinos still standing on the Vegas strip. Filled with history, the hotel has had a roster of celebrity clientele and was formerly connected to the Chicago Mafia – needless to say, the hotel has had its share of good times and bad. Perhaps its most well-known guest was Frank Sinatra, who had his own penthouse suite where he often threw lavish parties. As the “Ghost Adventures” team members head into the hotel to begin their investigation, they enlist the help of a few special guest investigators including: Vince Neil, lead singer for the rock band Mötley Crüe; Bruce Westcott, Frank Sinatra’s former pianist; and Jamie Gold, 2006’s World Series of Poker champion. Together the group – along with Vince’s entourage – explore paranormal occurrences in Sinatra’s room and various guest rooms. Attempting to channel Sinatra, they recreate a party in his suite, which delivers some startling results. As Vince and his entourage experience unexplained first-hand encounters – including scratch marks on one woman’s back, cold sensations, voices, and knocking – Zak, Nick, and Aaron document the multiple EVPs and unexplained events. But it’s not until Vince and his girlfriend, Rain, head into Room #908 that Vince encounters an overwhelming physical experience.

“Ghost Adventures” is produced by MY Tupelo Entertainment for Travel Channel. For MY Tupelo the executive producers are Michael Yudin and Joe Townley; for Travel Channel the executive producer is Daniel A. Schwartz.

Exclusive First Stills from Silent Night, Bloody Night Remake - Silent Night, Bloody Night: The Homecoming

That's right, kids! On tap for you right now, naughty or nice, we have the very first stills from the UK remake of the obscure little film from the Seventies called Silent Night, Bloody Night!

From the Press Release
SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT: THE HOMECOMING has started filming in the UK. The project is a re-working of the 1974 Christmas themed slasher film 'Silent Night, Bloody Night' and is the second collaboration among North Bank Entertainment, Mad Science Films, and Independent Moving Pictures, the companies behind 'Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection'. James Plumb is directing from a script he co-wrote with producer Andrew Jones. The film is being shot on location in Bridgend and Swansea, South Wales.

The cast includes a special appearance by the star of the original 'Friday the 13th', Adrienne King.

Producer Andrew Jones: "The original 'Silent Night, Bloody Night' was one of the earliest trailblazers in the slasher sub-genre yet has been largely forgotten. Our version will retain the central premise of the original, but we will be updating the story to a contemporary British setting. We're aiming for genuine suspense and tension while also delivering creative kills using practical FX. We want to re-capture the vibe of the classic slasher films of the early 80s.The team behind this project are big fans of old school slasher movies so it's a particular thrill to have horror icon Adrienne King involved. Adrienne deserves enormous credit for the continued support she gives to independent filmmaking."

Principal photography on SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT: THE HOMECOMING wraps on May 11th.

Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Robin Hardy on The Wicker Tree, Completing his Trilogy and More

$
0
0

It has been almost forty years now since writer/director Robin Hardy first mystified audiences with his uber-eccentric cult classic The Wicker Man, and now the UK filmmaker is back with his companion tale, the darkly comedic The Wicker Tree.

Starring newcomers Brittania Nicol and Henry Garrett as well Graham McTavish and Christopher Lee, The Wicker Tree is centered around two young missionaries who travel to a small village in Scotland where they hope to spread the gospel of Jesus; unaware of any sinister plans, the pair get caught in the middle of a ritual which will force them both to make the 'ultimate sacrifice' in the end.

Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Hardy about his follow-up efforts on The Wicker Tree as well as why this latest film isn't really a sequel and why his third film in the Wicker trilogy may end up being the most epic story of them all.

Read on for our exclusive interview with Hardy below, and make sure to check out The Wicker Tree once it hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves everywhere tomorrow, April 24th, courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Dread Central: It's been quite some time since the original The Wicker Man was released; how long had you known that you wanted to make a follow-up to that film?

Robin Hardy: Well, this isn't really a sequel; more of a companion piece I believe. Do you see this as a sequel?

Dread Central: I saw it as an exploration of this world but not really as a sequel at all, especially because of the tonal differences.

Robin Hardy: Definitely; I would say it's sort of like my homage to the genre that we created in The Wicker Man. As a storyteller, I wanted to have another go to see if it still worked and if it would work for audiences in the same way it did for the first one. In that sense, The Wicker Tree is a sort of spiritual brother to The Wicker Man but not a sequel.

To be quite honest, I think of The Wicker Tree more like a black comedy and not like a horror film; I keep on encouraging the distributors to say that so that fans will understand what they're in for. It's better when fans are prepared, and I think it is important that people know what they are getting into in advance.

Dread Central: Well, I'd like to believe that anyone who had seen the original Wicker Man movie would be prepared for the unexpected going into this one.

Robin Hardy: You know, one of my favorite quotes from Christopher Lee about the original book is where he says something like, "It’s erotic, comic, romantic and horrific enough to strain the bowels…" and I think that sums that up perfectly. I don't have quite the same kind of quote for this story, but it's just as unique I believe.

Dread Central: Speaking of Christopher Lee, how great was it reuniting with your The Wicker Man star? I understand he was supposed to have a larger role but couldn't because of health concerns.

Robin Hardy: Yes. He was originally going to play the role of Morrison that Graham (McTavish) now plays, but he had an accident in Mexico while working on a film and was too badly injured to do the role. But I wanted him in the film, and he wanted to be in the film so I wrote that little piece for him to play, and thankfully he was able to do it. It was lovely working with him again.

Dread Central: Back when you were writing the book, had you always planned on making it into a movie?

Robin Hardy: "Cowboys for Christ?" I'm trying to remember when I wrote the book; maybe I wrote the book about six or seven years ago, and yes, I suppose I had always had a film in mind when I wrote it, but I didn't really have a plan or anything.

Dread Central: It had been some time since you had helmed a feature between The Wicker Man and The Wicker Tree; any difficulties in making the transition back behind the camera after some time away?

Robin Hardy: Well, I've done quite a lot of television in the States in the interim so I was always working; I did various sorts of biographies for PBS programs and things like that so it wasn't all that unfamiliar to me. I felt perfectly comfortable from minute one on The Wicker Tree, the only problem being that I had never used one of these huge digital cameras before.

They're quite daunting at first glance and are considerably more difficult to work with than film cameras; they do present all sorts of problems of their own, too. Of course the results are very good and the things that you can do with the material are very good so that's why we use them and eventually they do make your life easier. So what was it like to come back to this world? It was certainly familiar but also new because of some intriguing new technical problems which I hadn't faced before.

Dread Central: With The Wicker Tree coming out this week, what's coming up for you? Any plans on returning to this world again for a third Wicker movie?

Robin Hardy: Actually, yes to both of those. There's a third movie I want to make called The Wrath of the Gods. It was set in Iceland but I've re-set it in Shetland. See, Shetland is full of Scandinavian people, not Scots, because it was ruled by Denmark for something like five centuries, and because of that the gods there are not Celtic, they're Nordic which makes for an interesting world.

The film is about the gods getting their comeuppance, which is a fitting third film, I must say. (laughs) But it's similar to what happened in Wagner's Ring Cycle- do you know what that is?

Dread Central: I know it has something to do with opera, but that's really it.

Robin Hardy: Yes, it's an opera that is akin to Greek tragedies, and my story is based on the same set of stories as these operas. It's going to be a grander scale to work on, but if we can do it right, the production value will be marvelous, and it will be a fitting finale for these stories.

New Trailer for 388 Arletta Avenue Takes Aim

$

0

We just got our hands on a brand spanking new trailer for EOne Entertainment's latest acquisition, 388 Arletta Avenue, and as always we have every pixel of it on tap for you right here!

Randall Cole (Real Time, 19 Months) directed the flick. Nick Stahl (Sin City, "Carnivale", Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Mirrors 2), Mia Kirshner ("The Vampire Diaries," "The L Word," The Black Dahlia), and Devon Sawa (Final Destination, Idle Hands) star; and Steve Hoban (Splice, Ginger Snaps) and Mark Smith (The Spine) produced.

Synopsis
Shot from the point of view of hidden cameras, the film follows a thirty-something couple, James and Amy Deakin, as they are secretly videotaped 24/7 by a mysterious stalker in their home, on the streets, and at their workplace. The stalker uses information gleaned from the footage to subtly manipulate the unsuspecting couple, and cracks in their relationship surface. When Amy suddenly vanishes, James is not sure whether she has been abducted or has simply left him. As the acts of the tormentor become more twisted and violent, James desperately tries to figure out who is behind the terror in order to save his wife. But it seems the stalker is always one move ahead...

"388 Arletta Avenue is a wickedly smart mystery-thriller," says executive producer Vincenzo Natali. "And it's a story that could not have existed until recently, thanks to the astonishing and invasive technology that is now widely available. The fact that it is possible makes it truly terrifying."

"388 Arletta Avenue plays with the notion that if you could scratch to beneath the surface of what most supposedly ordinary people present to the world, and even to themselves, you would find very interesting and possibly very dark things," says Randall Cole. "If exploited, some of those things could even result in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, as it does for our lead character.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident - Cast Missing! Renny Harlin Interrogated!

Holy cow, do we have something cool for you cats to dig into! A viral pitch video created by Renny Harlin that ... well ... you'll see. What happened in the Ural Mountains? Read on for some early sales art and video surrounding the Dyatlov Pass incident.

"The fact-based film is about a mysterious incident in 1959, when nine experienced hikers were found dead. The film is about contemporary students on a trek to investigate the mystery."

Producers are Alexander Rodnyansky, Kia Jam, Harlin, and Sergei Bespalov.

Harlin said: "I was fascinated by this story, which remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of modern paranormal lore. The facts, the script, and the very dramatic setting convinced me that there is a thrilling movie there, just waiting to rivet audiences."

Curious? Want to know a bit more? In a nutshell the Dyatlov Pass incident (as it is known) refers to an unsolved mystery that occurred in the northern Urals which saw a group of ski hikers tear open their tent from the inside and leave barefoot in a heavy snowstorm. Though there was no sign of a struggle, two victims had fractured skulls, one was missing her tongue, and clothing belonging to the victims contained high levels of radiation. Soviet investigators concluded that "a compelling unknown force" had caused their deaths.

Spooky? You betcha! More as it comes.

Synopsis
Fact: In February of 1959, nine Russian hikers ventured into a remote area of the Ural Mountains in Russia.

Fact: Two weeks later, all nine were found dead.

Fact: What happened to them is a mystery that has baffled investigators and researchers for decades. It has become known as the Dyatlov Pass Incident.

Rumors have attributed their deaths to everything from alien encounters and government conspiracies to supernatural causes. To date, no one has been able to adequately explain what drove nine experienced hikers from their tents so frantically that they ripped through the material from the inside; or how their bodies came to be exposed to such dangerous amounts of radiation that it was still detected weeks later. And no one knows why they were discovered hundreds of yards from their camp, half dressed and with internal injuries including broken ribs and fractured skulls, but with no external wounds at all. The body of one young woman was even found missing her tongue.

Present Day: Five ambitious American college students are issued a grant to return to the site of the original events in the belief that they can uncover and document the truth of what happened at Dyatlov Pass. But what they find is more shocking than anything they could have imagined. Their trek through the Ural Mountains, retracing the steps of that ill-fated journey, is plagued by strange and increasingly terrifying phenomena, all of which suggest that in spite of their desolate surroundings, they are not alone. The forces behind the Dyatlov Pass Incident have been waiting for them.

Freestyle Digital Media has announced the debut of Headspace: The Director's Cut on cable and internet video on demand in North America on April 24th with a DVD/Blu-ray release following on June 19th.

From the Press Release:
Headspace, originally released theatrically in February, 2006, has been updated by director Andrew van den Houten and will actually run five minutes shorter than the original theatrical version. Scripted by Steve Klausner and William M. Miller from a story by Troy McCombs, the film was produced by van den Houten and Miller with Marius Kerdel executive producing.

When Alex (Christopher Denham) encounters a mysterious stranger, he begins to get smarter each day. It's not long before he realizes that his new intellect comes with deadly side effects. Headaches and visions plague him at every step. Soon savage, unexplainable murders are linked to him. Now it's a race against time as Alex discovers that the source of this evil may not be human and the key to this mystery may be in his own past.

Running 84 minutes, the streamlined Director’s Cut will also be available for the first time in high definition. This will also be the first time an R-rated cut of the film will be available for audiences as a previously edited version was shown on basic cable in 2009.

"I'm thrilled that I'm finally able to make my intended vision of Headspace available to the public," said van den Houten. "This director's cut serves the story better while emphasizing the amazing abilities of everyone involved. When I revisited my first feature, I realized that there was a better, more taut way to present this thriller for a more satisfying experience for the viewer."

Since the initial release many cast members have gone on to larger screen roles including Christopher Denham (Shutter Island and the upcoming releases Sound of My Voice and The Bay) as well as Paul Sparks (“Boardwalk Empire”) and Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman, Land of the Lost, Burke and Hare). Rounding out the cast are Olivia Hussey, William Atherton, Sean Young, Dee Wallace Stone, and Udo Kier.

Juan of the Dead (Pre-Release Screening): Official media refer to the attacks as isolated incidents provoked by Cuban dissidents paid by the US government. Little by little Juan and his friends start to realize that the attackers are not normal human beings and that killing them is quite a difficult task. They’re not vampires, they’re not possessed, but they’re definitely not dissidents; a simple bite turns the victim into another violent killing machine, and the only way to beat them is destroying their brains…

War of The Dead (Northwest Premiere): A platoon of American and Finnish soldiers is driven deep into a Russian forest, where its Captain discovers a terrifying secret.

The Return of the Living Dead (Remastered): In this genre defining classic three men and a gang of punks must do what they can to quell the threat that the now undead pose to an unsuspecting town after the accidental release of chemicals that bring the dead back to life.

Prototype 2 held a live ad event at Covent Garden in London, England to get gamers ready for the upcoming sequel's release. The event took place in the late hours of the night, as the ad was rated suitable for ages 18 and up.

The live ad featured many different actors portraying characters from the game, specifically, Alex Mercer vs. Sgt. James Heller. You can check out the dramatic action sequence below and read on for more details!

    From the Official Press Release
The live ad – inspired by PROTOTYPE 2 – featured actors playing the parts of the game’s new protagonist Sgt. James Heller and his nemesis Alex Mercer, as well as Blackwatch military and the disease-ridden Infected. Action from the game, including a gruesome and bloody confrontation between Heller and Mercer, was considered unsuitable viewing for those below the age of 18 for fear of causing upset or distress.

A first of its kind, fans were also offered the opportunity to choose the finale to the ad through a voting mechanic that closed just hours before the action went live. The dramatic close saw Mercer triumph over Sgt. Heller in an intense showdown.

PROTOTYPE 2 will be available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system on 24th April 2012, and for Windows PC on 24th July 2012. The PlayStation®3 version of the game will also be released on PlayStation NETWORK on 25th April across Europe.

For more information on the game, check out the official Prototype 2 website.

Texas Frightmakers: Q&A with Producer Allen Reed

This month we talk to Texas Frightmaker Allen Reed from Subamerican Productions, a Texas-based pair of filmmakers who have just completed The Merchant, their first feature-length film, which was shot entirely in Texas using local talent. I sat down with Reed to discuss his work as an independent Texas producer of horror films.

Texas Frightmakers: Q&A with Producer Allen Reed

Mr. Dark: Can you tell us a little about who you are and what you've done?

Allen Reed: Well, let's see... We are Subamerican Productions, LLC, which basically consists of myself and director Justin Mosley. We are a very indie filmmaking duo that does not fight crime on the side. We've been making short films for 6 or 7 years, but last year we undertook our first big-boy-pants project. It's called The Merchant, a supernatural thriller/horror film set in the late 1800's and filmed in East Texas.

MD: Give us some background on The Merchant. You wrote and produced the film; how did that production come together?

AR: It started on Justin's back porch as a careless comment: "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we made a western?" I scoffed at the idea, having heard about how taxing and expensive it is to make a period film. I turned the idea down, flat. Six weeks later I had my first draft written. The idea was just too tempting for us. We thought, living here in Texas, that we had a fighting chance with so many history enthusiasts and western fans around. We were right. The community responded very well to this project. It did not take long for the project to grow into something bigger than us. We were covered by the local newspapers and magazines and even ended up on the 6 o'clock news. Word got around fast, as it tends to here. Before we knew it, we had a great location and some great talent on board. It's been work, work, work ever since.

MD: You're part of what I consider to be a "new wave" of indie horror filmmakers. What drew you to a project like The Merchant instead of a more traditional horror film?

AR: I love traditional horror. I have since I was a kid. When other kids were watching Flight of the Navigator, I was watching Chopping Mall. The best thing, and the worst thing, about traditional horror is that it's abundant. It's everywhere. You have decades of films to draw upon, and a hundred new titles pop up every year. That's why we will probably never go the traditional route. It's difficult enough being taken seriously as an indie movie producer without creating a product that ends up being white noise against a thousand films about teens on vacation. Of course, a few of those titles turn out to be great, but we just can't do it. We're bored with it.

MD: Are you a native Texan, or did you just get here as soon as you could?

AR: I wasn't born here. I was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas (go ahead, let me have it), but I spent most of my childhood and adolescence here. I lived in Southern California for a few years and hated it. I know, as a filmmaker I'm not supposed to have that opinion, but I do. I have lots of family there, but the place just isn't for me. I'm a Southern boy, and Texas is definitely home. That's why it makes me so happy to see the film industry begin to explore the South.

Texas Frightmakers: Q&A with Producer Allen Reed

MD: What is it about Texas that made you want to create horror here? Why not LA or the tax-credit wilds of Canada?

AR: I think any tax relief we may have gotten from Canada would have been offset by the ridiculous travel expenses and moose attack insurance. And, as I said a moment ago, I've never liked California. It just feels like a creepy uncle to me. Not right. Here in Texas we've had the home field advantage, and it shows in the work. I mean, what better place to create a western setting than Texas? Arizona, maybe, which we strongly considered. But in the end it could have only been done right here. The involvement, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm of the community have been invaluable.

MD: What's the future for The Merchant? Release plans, film festival screenings, con appearances?

AR: Currently we are planning to submit to festivals in New York City, Atlanta, and here in Texas as well as Sundance and possibly Cannes, though it's hard to imagine going to France right now. Of course, almost any indie filmmaker thinks their work would do well in the bigger festivals like Sundance, but the feedback we have received so far, even being in post, has made us think we may have a monster on our hands. Ultimately, what we do with it will depend on what is best for our distribution goals, but I am proud of the film and would like to show it anyone with at least one eye.

MD: My traditional final question: What's your favorite horror movie?

AR: If you asked Justin, he would say John Carpenter's The Thing. He likes it for what it achieves in the time before CGI alligators and 30-year-old teenager horror classic remakes. I agree; the film is great. It's genius, the design and practical effects used in that movie. It's something I wish the horror genre would return to. Nothing beats practical. My personal favorite is Evil Dead 2. Scared the hell out of me as a kid, and now it gives me a good, dark laugh. I am also a huge George A. Romero fan. I was loving the zombies before they stumbled their way onto lunchboxes.

Big thanks to Allen Reed for taking time out to talk to us! I'm looking forward to more from him and Subamerican. Keep an eye peeled (no, literally, go grab a peeler) right here on Dread Central for more on The Merchant as it happens!

    Synopsis:
Hell has come to the town of Burning Bush. The year is 1895, and the town has fallen into gambling, prostitution, and loan-sharking; but when the town's benefactor, William "Big Bill" Micallef, must make good on a deal made with the demon Belial, it's the innocents of Burning Bush who must pay with blood. Now a pair of young ranch hands, a pregnant widow, a can-can dancer, a Haitian bartender, and a booze-swilling gunslinger must fight for their lives as Belial aims to destroy everything and everyone in town and reap the souls promised him.

There are a lot of traditions that happen every Halloween, but Diamond Select Toys has created a new one: 7-inch Universal Monsters action figures! DST has put out two series of Universal Monsters 7-inch figures in the past two years, and this year will see that tradition continue with five new figures due out this September!

At comic shops and specialty stores, horror fans will be able to pick up a highly detailed Metaluna Mutant from 1955's This Island Earth. With his bulging brain and claws, he conveys all the menace of the movie creature, and he even comes with the Interocitor, the device that allows humans to contact the Metalunans. Alongside the Metaluna Mutant will be the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera (1925), complete with his full-sized organ, which he plays in the catacombs of the opera house. Both will be available in oversized Select display packaging, with side panel art perfect for storing on a shelf.

Toys "R" Us will get their own exclusive figure in the Invisible Man, from the 1933 film of the same name. Jack Griffin is depicted with his goggles and false nose, and he comes with a small display base. Toys "R" Us will also get a variation on the Phantom, one that wears a coat and mask and comes with a violin and music stand instead of the organ. There will also be a more basic version of the Mutant at Toys "R" Us, minus the Interocitor. All of these figures will come in smaller blister-card packaging.

Check out the photos below, and pre-order the two Select figures today at your local comic shop or your favorite online retailer.
