Have a horror fan on your holiday shipping list? Well, STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND PAY ATTENTION! This has to be seen to be believed! Sure, it comes out next March, but WHO CARES?!? Oh my fucking god, is this cool!

As seen in the 1986 horror classic Aliens, this full-sized replica stands almost 36″ tall, and articulated flaps with a wire armature allow you to actually open the top folds of the egg.

The included full-size facehugger has a bendable tail so you can pose it anywhere… waiting to drop on unsuspecting prey from overhead or simply lurking inside the egg.

The Life Size Xenomorph Egg is made of detailed, hand-painted foam and stands on its own. A switch activates the LED lights inside the base to create a menacing, otherworldly glow effect.

Requires 3 AAA batteries, not included. The price? Just $300.00! Worth every damned penny! NECA will begin shipping these bad bitches in March 2016. Holy shit.

Krampus: The Reckoning (2015)

Krampus The Reckoning (2015)Starring Monica Engesser, Amelia Haberman, James Ray

Directed by Robert Conway

Released by Uncork’d Entertainment (VOD and MOD DVD-R)

Joining Krampus: The Christmas Devil (review) in a so-far needless rabble of killer-Christmas creature flicks, Krampus: The Reckoning takes what could have been a fairly memorable presentation and stuffs it back up the chimney with force, using contemptible CGI to ruin this holiday offering.

Directed by Rob Conway, The Reckoning jumps into the life of a young girl (Haberman) who’s been bounced from foster home to foster home, and her reserved introversion and overly quiet demeanor haven’t helped her cause in the least. Her self-salvation comes in the small army of dolls that she possesses, and one in particular serves more than just a cuddly purpose: His name is Krampus, and his evil spirit can be summoned by this “precious child” to do her bidding, which basically consists of laying a holly-jolly sized slaying upon those who’ve angered her.

The last mysterious example of her aggression manages to land her in a kid’s hospital, under the close psychological supervision of a doctor (Engesser) who attempts to delve into the little elf’s diabolical motives.

As this complete lump of coal dragged on like a tranquilized reindeer in the snow, the detestable visuals were rivaled only by the incomprehensibly lackluster acting performances. I’ve seen local high school drama productions with more passion and delivery than this yule log. Sadly enough, if you’re willing to sit through the majority of this fecal catastrophe, the final 20 minutes or so actually aren’t that bad, but with the inclusion of some moronic backstories and wasteful plot pacing, this whole film closely resembles that crappy gift you’ve been given from your kooky aunt – just smile… and wait for her to leave before you toss it in the trash.

Hell, I should be on Santa’s “nice” list for devoting this many words to such a grinch of a film. Bypass Krampus: The Reckoning at all costs.

Being released on April 22nd of next year, The Huntsman: Winter’s War has a new trailer arriving tomorrow, which in today’s world means that today we have a teaser of said trailer to share. And that’s not all… Universal has also provided us with a slew of character posters for the film.

The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman, Eric, and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, an epic action-adventure in which they are joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain as well as director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale nested in the legendary saga.

Synopsis:
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable… unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.

Danny Boyle Interested in Directing 28 Months Later

$

Let’s play a little game, shall we? Every so often we post news that we’ve learned, not rumor or conjecture. Immediately other sites go out of their way to call bullshit on us and work feverishly to disprove what we told you. For example: We told you ages ago a new Ghostbusters was coming, and years later one is on its way. We told you that a new Evil Dead was filming before anyone, and lo and behold, we got a remake. We told you YEARS ago that a new Phantasm film was coming, and then “out of nowhere” news of the flick Phantasm V: Ravager was everywhere.

See a trend? In 2010 we told you that Danny Boyle was interested in returning to the director’s chair for 28 Months Later. We took no end of shit for it. Now it seems as if the idea of directing the film is becoming more and more enticing to the man.

Boyle sat down with IGN recently and told them that he’d return to the director’s chair if the film is sufficiently different frin what’s gone before.

I love doing stuff that is ‘How are you going to direct that? How would you do that?’ It’s like this project – it’s like the Steve Jobs,” said Boyle. “You go ‘How are you going to do that?’ That’s a wonderful place to start off. The worst place is when you know how to do it. Or you think you do. Because actually you don’t. The audience spot that quite quickly – they’re weird, and rightfully so, they’re righteous judges of us. They go ‘Oh, he’s done that before – that’s crap.’ I’ve learnt that. So if it’s something that I’ve felt that about, then I’d have no hesitation.

As for writer Alex Garland’s idea for the film’s story, Boyle isn’t giving anything away but calls it “lovely.” Twice.

It is a good idea, which I can’t obviously say what it is. But it’s a lovely idea. Because there’s been so many stories told since we did the first one – you know in television and other movies and stuff like that. It’s become such a popular device – the walking dead if you like, or zombies, or the infected as we called them.  But he had a lovely idea on them, and it’s being worked on. It’s not as far advanced – I can’t tell you more about it than that, because it’s not as far advanced as Trainspotting 2, but then it started later. Ten months seems like a long time to you guys, but in terms of the gestation of things, that’s not an enormous amount of time. I wouldn’t be over-concerned yet that it’s not going to arrive.

I’m thinking vindication is once again on its way, and as always, it tastes so good.

Universal Talks Monster Movie Reboot Plans

$

It’s hard not to be cautiously excited about Universal Studios’ plans to reboot all of its monster properties and unite them under one Avengers-style umbrella, as the idea will prove to be either brilliant or disastrous. The studio has a lot riding on this one, and today we’ve learned more.

Per Variety, universe architects Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan spoke about their plans, confirming that The Mummy is the first film in the works. Reboots of Van Helsing, Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Wolfman will follow; and different writers will tackle each monster.

The idea is that we have a deep bench of brains to consult with about how their monster fits into our world as we go forward,” Kurtzman explains. “We’re creating a mythology, so we’re looking at this canon and thinking, ‘What are the rules?’ What can we break, and what are the ones that are untouchable?

This is not a heightened world,” Morgan adds. “We’re exploring issues of family identity and questions of, ‘Where do I belong in the world?’”

Heroes tend to be perfect, but most people in an audience aren’t ever going to know what it’s like to be the smartest, strongest, or fastest person alive,” he continues. “But there’s a darkness inside everybody. And everyone wants to be able to turn a curse into empowerment. The monsters have been in the shadows, and now it’s time to bring them out into the light.”

Universal’s big plan is for a new monster movie to come out each year, and the films will update the classic stories for modern times while retaining familiar elements. Much like in The Avengers universe, those individual characters will not necessarily be confined to their own movies.

The characters will interact with each other across movies,” says Donna Langley, chair of Universal Pictures. “We’re incubating it at the moment, and we’re taking the time to get it right.”

The brand new Mummy film will begin shooting in early 2016.

Netflix: November 2015 Roundup

$

0

As has become the norm for Netflix, the genre selection in November (and December, for that matter) is a bit thin. Sure, we’re seeing all kinds of fan favorites make a return to the mix, but actual “new” releases seem to be a bit limited. So, while you’re accustomed to seeing a good 10-12 films make this list, November is delivering something of a condensed version of the Netflix Roundup.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any quality films to stream this month; it’s just to say that you’ve probably already seen the bulk of these (The Taking of Deborah Logan, Let Us Prey, Dark Was the Night, and The Canal are but a few of the relatively recent releases featured that you’ve more likely than not already had the chance to tune in to), which leaves us with just a few new recommendations to thrust in your direction.

Bound to Vengeance: If you’re into revenge films with enlightening twists, José Manuel Cravioto’s Bound to Vengeance is going to successfully keep you engaged. Is it a remarkably original film? No. However, it does make an attempt at giving a familiar story a unique spin. The performances are strong, and outside of a few WTF moments, the story feels somewhat plausible, especially in this twisted world we live in. Expect strong performances and fine cinematography from this spirited indie piece.

Last Shift: I’m still torn about Last Shift; I can label it neither amazing nor terrible. There are some very chilling sequences in the movie, but there are also a few embarrassing script points to get beyond. Visually speaking, it is a pretty badass film, but a problem some will run into is the fact that 90 percent of the big scares in the film can be seen in the trailer. That’s a bit of a no-no in my mind. Save the good stuff for the feature, not the two-minute hook we see well in advance of the film’s arrival. There are also a few wooden performances that may leave viewers a tad irked. Regardless of its faults, Last Shift has some fine atmosphere and jarring visuals. It’s definitely a recommended piece from the good folks at DC!

Kristy: Kristy falls victim to a very insulting script. For some odd reason screenwriter Anthony Jaswinski made the decision to treat viewers, as well as the supporting cast, as complete morons who have never seen a horror film. It’s a shame because this Thanksgiving-themed slasher has just about all the tools to be a superb film. We get an awesome heroine, a menacing band of villains, and a cool setting to work with. The film also flies by at alarming speed. If it weren’t for some very poor story choices, this would likely be considered an instant holiday classic. As it is, it’s an engaging watch with one damn hot finale.

Human Centipede 3: If you thought Tom Six took things to gruesome levels with his second Human Centipede film, think again. Everything in The Second Sequence feels astoundingly tame when compared to the stomach-turning visuals and ideas put to work in Six’s franchise finale. Prepare to be thoroughly disgusted time and again… in a strangely welcome way, if that makes much sense!

Harbinger Down: Amalgamated Dynamics had initially been tapped to create all of the practical effects that we were promised to see from the 2011 prequel to The Thing. Universal didn’t feel as though fans would respond favorably to the work provided by AD, so they completely scrapped all of it and motioned for the digital route – which inevitably sunk the film and drew serious ire from fans and critics alike. Well, AD wasn’t about to let all of its hard work go to waste, so the company carried what they’d assembled right on over to another project: Harbinger Down. The movie feels a little cheap, and some of the performances are wooden, but ultimately the special effects are pretty awesome and Lance Henriksen does a great job as the no-nonsense captain of a crabbing vessel. It’s not a groundbreaker, but Harbinger Down is an entertaining monster movie that should touch the hearts of those who cherish films from the 1980s.

Return to Sender: Return to Sender is far more thriller than horror, and it could easily be deemed a “slow” film, but it’s effective. It’s creepy, and it reminds us that we never know exactly whom we’re spending time with. It’s all about a blind date that leads to some disconcerting scenarios, and it succeeds in sending a few chills down the spine. Rosamund Pike (whom you’ll recognize from the goofy but badass Doom) does a fine job and gives us a nice notice that sometimes controlled performances can go a long, long way.

Circle: This isn’t a perfect film. Not by a long shot. However, it does possess a wealth of promise, and for a film that takes place in one single room, with an assortment of personalities to study, it’s a relatively strong and compelling piece. Although the big twist isn’t much of a twist at all, directors Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione do an excellent job of creating tension and mystery. There are some unorthodox decisions made throughout the picture, and that too holds our attention. Circle, though overlooked by many, is worth a watch.

Matthew McConaughey Playing Villain in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower?

$

0

As we learned out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) has been tapped to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, which will be based on the first novel in the series. After many false starts, it’s finally happening, and a star may have been found.

Per The Wrap, producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard want Matthew McConaughey to play a lead role in the Sony/MRC adaptation, and according to reports the outlet has received, he’s been offered the choice between playing gunslinger Roland Deschain or the villainous Man in the Black.

Both parties are reportedly interested in striking a deal, though we must note that only preliminary discussions have taken place. The badass McConaughey, no stranger to playing evil characters, is allegedly leaning more towards playing the film’s villain – which is quite frankly music to our ears.

King’s book blends horror and fantasy to tell the tale of a gunslinger who has taken up the lifelong quest of locating The Dark Tower – which is the nexus of the universe — before evil invades and destroys the tower, ending all existence.

Sony Pictures and MRC are co-financing the ambitious feature film, which Nikolaj Arcel will direct from a script by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner that’s primarily based on the first book in King’s series, The Gunslinger.

The Dead Room Employs Groundbreaking Technology; New Poster and Stills

The Paranormal Activity franchise is known for bringing clever gimmicks into the supernatural fold, and upcoming New Zealand film The Dead Room takes a page out of that playbook. Coming our way courtesy of Raven Banner Entertainment, it’s set to be a groundbreaking fright flick.

Why, you ask? The Dead Room is the first ever film to utilize RUMBLE™, a new audio technology designed to hit the bottom frequencies of most cinema’s sub effects speakers. When performing at infrasonic levels, the bass frequency creates a physical reaction an audience can literally feel. Combined with a heightened sense of tension and fear, RUMBLE™ has been shown to increase pulse rates, heighten blood pressure, and temporarily release cortisol in test subjects.

Sounds pretty crazy, eh? While we wait for more, check out the poster art and a stills gallery below!

Director Jason Stutter was responsible for the witty comedy Diagnosis: Death, and his latest film features Hobbit stars Jed Brophy and Jeffrey Thomas plus Laura Petersen.

Synopsis:
When a terrified family flees a desolate southern New Zealand farmhouse, two cynical scientists and a young psychic are sent to investigate their claims of a haunting. There they encounter a powerful spirit that will protect the house’s secrets at all cost.

The Dead Room is inspired by the chilling urban legend surrounding a farmhouse in Central Otago, New Zealand. In the early 1970s, two science tutors went to debunk claims a rural house was haunted and uncovered an incredibly disturbing mystery.

900 numbers. Oh, the trouble you could get into dialing those things as a teenager in the Eighties and Nineties. If you’re too young to remember this expensive craze, you may wanna ask your parents as I’m sure they caught hell for fuckin’ around on them when they were your age.

Aside from the usual sex lines and party chat lines which featured “hot women just waiting to meet you,” there were also lines to talk to Santa Claus and even lines which let you hear from everyone’s favorite dream demon, Freddy Krueger.

We’d like to thank Bloody Disgusting for bringing these long lost horrors back to mind via YouTube. If it ever existed… yeah, it’s probably somewhere on YouTube. Hit the above link for a few more vids. Ah, the good ooze days!

Time for another “in talks” story, kids! Deadline is currently reporting that Sam Riley (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Maleficent) is in early talks to star in DreamWorks’ Ghost In The Shell opposite Scarlett Johansson. No deal has been set yet and the situation is still fluid, but there is a desire from both sides for one to get made.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) is directing with Paramount on board to co-finance the film, which is based on the bestselling Japanese sci-fi franchise.

The story follows a female special ops cyborg (Johansson) who leads a fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization called Public Security Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. The unit is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man (Riley), who will stop at nothing to destroy Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology. Johansson’s Lucy co-star Pilou Asbæk is also on board.

Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing from a script by Jonathan Herman. Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura, and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are exec producing.
