Released in 2009, Seth Grahame-Smith’s mashup novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was one destined to make the leap to the big screen, and indeed the feature film adaptation is headed our way early next year. While we wait, check out a new piece of poster art. It’s bloody lovely.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies stars Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Matt Smith, Douglas Booth, Charles Dance, Lena Heady, Ellie Bamber, Millie Brady, Bella Heathcote, and Suki Waterhouse. Burr Steers wrote the screenplay and directs.

Look for the film in theaters on February 5, 2016.  In the meantime join the Squad on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Synopsis:
A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in this reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry, and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Riley) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield in order to conquer the undead once and for all.

The male lead has been cast for Jordan Peele’s upcoming horror film Get Out, and Deadline is reporting that Sicario‘s Daniel Kaluuya has landed the role!

The actor will star opposite Allison Williams in the Blumhouse horror pic about a young African-American man who visits his white girlfriend’s family estate.

Further plot details are under wraps, but when Get Out was announced in September, Peele said it “takes on the task of exploring race in America — something that hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night of the Living Dead 47 years ago.

Sinister 2 Bringing Home Movies to Home Video

Though ultimately a forgettable film, this year’s Sinister 2 (review) had more going for it than most gave it credit for, using the established mythology of Bughuul as the jumping off point for what was a pretty interesting story. If you missed it, it’s headed to home video early next year.

Set for release on January 12, 2016, the Blu-ray disc includes deleted scenes, extended kill films, a feature commentary with director Ciaran Foy, and the featurette Time to Watch Another: The Making of Sinister 2. The DVD release will have everything but the extended kill films.

Ciaran Foy (Citadel) directed Sinister 2. Scott Derrickson, director of Sinister, penned the screenplay with C. Robert Cargill, with whom he also wrote the original film.

Synopsis:
In the aftermath of the shocking events in Sinister, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Buhguul continues to spread with frightening intensity. James Ransone co-stars.

Sean Cunningham is Remaking 1986 Horror Film House

If a horror movie was released in the ’80s and it hasn’t yet been remade, then it’s either completely irrelevant or someone just hasn’t gotten around to it yet. Steve Miner’s House, which hit theaters in 1986, is a favorite among fans, so it comes as no big surprise that it’s up on the chopping block.

In an exclusive interview with Fangoria, House producer Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) spoke about a modern day take on the horror-comedy gem, revealing that he’s currently developing a remake. Only he doesn’t quite call it a remake, because some big changes are being made.

I’m doing it right now. We are deeply in development,” Cunningham told Fangoria after accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York Horror Film Festival. “We worked on [a new] HOUSE about four or five years ago and determined that the structure of [the original] is extremely strong, and that just remaking it in modern times wasn’t going to improve it, and wasn’t going to change it. It would have to be rethought, and there had to be a really good reason to do it.”

Recently, we came up with—and it sounds so obvious—what if we made a gender switch, so that it’s not a man in the house?” Cunningham continued. “Although they’re not involved, imagine HOUSE starring Kristen Wiig or Melissa McCarthy. It wouldn’t be either one of them…well, it could; I mean, that’s a dream. But suddenly we realized, oh wait, then everything would have to adjust. And also, if we did it that way, it would bring back the fun that HOUSE had. So that’s the direction I’m committed to going in. I would love to make that movie, and I hope to be able to keep all the elements of the personal story from the Bill Katt version and still have it be fun.”

Good idea? Terrible idea? Sound off below!

Pillow Fright (Short)

PillowFrightStarring Jessi Burkette, Jennifer Seward-Derock, Jessica Logsdon

Directed by Patrick Rea

A room full of bodacious beauties, boozed up, bored, and ready to brawl… with pillows, that is! Fellas, if this particular form of cushioned calamity piques your interest, perhaps a little swerve on the festivities could make you even MORE intrigued. What if the pillows decided to fight back… no, I haven’t been drinking (much).

From director Patrick Rea (Nailbiter) comes his entry into the Fun-Size Horror: Volume Two spate of quickies with the  wonderfully demented short Pillow Fright. This 5-minute foray shows the effects of abusing one’s pillow for pseudo-combat, and it couldn’t be more entertaining. Rea uses a winning formula of gorgeous women, goofy humor, and gore-tastic effects to make the viewer think twice about opting to swing their goose-feathered head-rest in a violent fashion. The only downside to this crazy little film? It’s TOO damn short!

In any event, if this one manages to creep its way up onto your mattress, I’d highly advise giving it a look – it’s funny, it’s gory, and it’s got smokin’ women… what more could you ask for… you ARE horror fans, right?

Exclusive: Buffy’s Juliet Landau Talks Her Documentary A Place Among the Undead – Part 1

Dread Central sat down recently with actress turned filmmaker Juliet Landau to chat regarding her upcoming documentary A Place Among the Undead over sushi in Hollywood, CA, and the ensuing conversation proved altogether fascinating. Joined by Landau’s co-director/producer (and husband) Deverill Weekes, we delved into the duo’s currently shooting exploration of vampires in cinema, literature, and television.

Dev, Juliet and Gary

Landau, who is probably best known to genre fans for her turn as the deranged yet enigmatic vampire “Drusilla” in Joss Whedon’s iconic “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” series (as well as for her memorable portrayal of “Loretta King” in Tim Burton’s celebrated 1994 feature Ed Wood, in which she shared screen time with her father, Martin), and Weekes, a celebrated photographer and cinematographer, dished enthusiastically regarding their exhaustive documentary, whose interview subjects thus far include (take a breath) Whedon, Burton, actor Gary Oldman (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), author Anne Rice, Underworld creator Kevin Grevioux, Hammer veterans Caroline Munro and Madeline Smith, Willem Dafoe (Shadow of the Vampire), and many, many more.

Landau, quite like her immortal character of Dru on “Buffy,” seems to have not aged a day, although her interest in the subject of vampirism has indeed matured since she first debuted the psychic turned vampire character as an antagonist on the series in 1997.

“It really started when I was extraordinarily fortunate to work with the brilliant Joss Whedon on ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel,’” offered Landau of the inspiration for her documentary over a spicy tuna roll, “and then through the years, whenever I’ve hung out with creators, writers, directors, and actors who’ve lived in the vampire universe, we’ve had the most amazing conversations. I’ve always thought, ‘I wish people could see this.’ The idea for the project percolated for a really long time, and we finally started it. The project grew and grew beyond our wildest expectations. Initially, we were self-funding it.”

Upon announcing A Place Among the Undead, it soon became apparent to Landau, however, that based on the interest expressed by veterans of the genre for inclusion, the project would require a much larger budget, given her and Weekes’ desire to deliver, as she put it, “the ultimate vampire documentary.” A decision was then made to turn to crowdfunding in order to secure the needed monies.

Expounding on the decision, Landau stated, “Part of the reason we ended up going with Indiegogo is because we want to make the film fans want to see. We’d had a number of meetings with production companies who wanted to fund it, but they wanted things like cutting out coverage of the Hammer films. One guy said, and I quote, ‘Those actors don’t have enough of a star meter.’ We said, ‘You can’t make the definitive vampire documentary and not include Hammer in it,’ so we wouldn’t do it. We really want to have partners that not only like what we are doing, but really love and understand it.”

For those whose horror knowledge may only go back a decade or so (for shame), Hammer Films is a British film production company that threw its cape into the vampire ring in 1958 with the classic feature film Horror of Dracula, starring the legendary Christopher Lee in the title role, with Peter Cushing portraying his dogged nemesis, Van Helsing. The film inspired six sequels featuring the two as well as numerous other vampire films, including Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter, starring A Place Among the Undead interviewee Caroline Munro, as well as The Vampire Lovers, one entry in the company’s “Karnstein Trilogy” starring actress Madeline Smith, herself a subject of Landau’s doc.

“What’s funny about that,” continued Landau of the production companies who courted her documentary but who showed little interest in the Hammer aspect, “is that when we talked to Tim Burton and Tom Holland and so many other directors, they said that they largely became filmmakers and storytellers because of the Hammer films. When they were young and they saw them, the vibrancy of those films was seared into their conscience. Tom said, in his era, he was so used to watching black and white movies that to see blood in that electric red was an overload of stimuli. He wasn’t used to it, and that made it that much more frightening to him.”

social_facebook_push_1200x627_triptych__GOJLRP_v4a

Given the rich tapestry and overwhelming wealth of vampirism in literature and fiction, we queried Landau as to her approach to the matter, a daunting task surely.

“We definitely had a structural arc and concept,” she offered, “and we’ve shot about fifty percent of it, but depending on what happens with our campaign, it could conceivably become a six-part series rather than a feature because the subject matter is so vast. What I think with documentaries, and really with all filmmaking, is that things get revealed to you while you are in the edit bay, and you have to be open to the surprises and the journey and the evolution. It’s important to have a structural idea, but then the movie will tell you what it needs to be.”

“One of the other things that’s been interesting,” Landau continued, “is that you used the word ‘tapestry’ because one of the things about A Place Among the Undead is that it transcends the traditional idea of a documentary, and we’ve been using the word ‘tapestry’ because there will be interlinking narrative films inspired by the conversations we’ve had with our interviewees. One of the things that we believe is that fundamentally vampires have such staying power and have lasted through the ages in every society because the metaphor affords us a mirror to look at the human condition in such a wide myriad of ways. Joss Whedon says he used the metaphor of vampirism for high school as a nightmare, which most people can actually relate to. When we talked to Anne Rice, when she’d written Interview with the Vampire, her child had just died, so she created a child character who would live forever. It was all about loss and grieving, and you can feel that when you read her book. When we talked to Kevin Grevioux, he said that he created Underworld based on his experiences with interracial dating, so he created two species, one of them being vampires who don’t get along [with the other]. When we talked to Tim Burton, he was interested in exploring the dysfunctional family in [his film] Dark Shadows, and for Sookie Stackhouse author Charlaine Harris, it was all about discrimination against homosexuality.”

As for her preferred cinematic vampire, Landau admits to favoring Bela Lugosi (unsurprising, given her father’s masterful turn as the Hungarian actor in his later years in Burton’s biopic Ed Wood, for which the patriarch received an Oscar for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role”).

“Bela Lugosi in Dracula is so iconic,” said Landau, “and Max Schreck in Nosferatu. Those visuals become emblazoned in your consciousness; even for people who haven’t seen those films but have seen that imagery, they never forget them. And I think that Gary Oldman [in Bram Stoker’s Dracula] was phenomenal. I also love The Lost Boys and Near Dark. The thing that’s been incredible about this documentary is that a lot of people have come to us and have said, ‘I heard about your documentary, and I’d love to be interviewed.’ We haven’t approached anyone in those last two films yet, but we are going to. Lance Henriksen was so amazing as ‘Jesse Hooker’ in Near Dark, and Joss said that there’s a lot of Kiefer’s character of ‘David’ from The Lost Boys in ‘Buffy’s’ (character) of ‘Spike.’”

Exclusive: Zak Bagans Gives Demon House Update

$

We’ve been keeping a very close eye on production of Zak Bagans’ new film, The Demon House, which tells the tale of his in-depth investigation of The Ammons House; and right now we have the latest on it for you!

We are in the last month of post-production,” Bagans tells us. “The Demon House project has given me more knowledge about the dark forces that exist out there than anything I’ve ever investigated before. With ‘Ghost Adventures’ we commonly take four days to do an investigation. With this I’ve been able to take two years. Seeing how many people have been affected by the house… people from all walks of life… it’s really enabled me to study how these demons work. It’s a lot different than most people perceive. The aspect of intelligence that these demons exhibit… they work in ways that we cannot comprehend. There are limits pertaining to how much you can study something that is more advanced than we are. It’s been so hard for me to get to the point of ending this film.

Zak continues, “It’s a big challenge for me to come to terms with the fact that the final month of production on this project is here. The hardest thing for me is to say, ‘Okay, we have to stop filming now’ because I don’t want to. I really want to keep filming this house for a long time, but it’s dangerous. Like I said, it has affected people who have the highest level of knowledge that you possibly could have of the paranormal. People who are widely recognized worldwide as being at the top of their field, whether it be demonology, parapsychology, or psychophysiology. This makes me recognize that there are limits to how much further I should keep going on this case. The house keeps drawing me back there, but when I am there, I am not me. A lot of people who have been there have told me that they felt the same way.”

He concludes, “Still, the final month of production is here; we hope to be done with the film in December, and we’ll be releasing it in 2016.

Look for more on The Demon House and Bagans’ other projects, including Sympathy, Said the Shark and a new series for Travel Channel, soon.

Horror card games are few and far between, so whenever one does come along, we cherish seeing how our genre can be adapted into a less conventional medium.

Escape the Nightmare places you in “nightmarish dreamscape of clashing realities” and has so far been getting rave reviews. Just look at what Polyhedron Collider had to say:

“It’s less a game and more a group stress test, where your heart is pumping and your brain is confused, because Escape the Nightmare is a game that purposefully messes with your head… The game has attempted to replicate the dread, confusion, and frustration of an actual nightmare; and it has succeeded at this very well… Coming out of a game is that same feeling as leaving the cinema after watching a really good horror film; you’re not sure why you put yourself through that stress, but you know that you enjoyed it.”

It has just under £1000 left to raise on Kickstarter, and there are only a few days left so be sure to contribute. If you need any more convincing that it’s a worthwhile investment of your money, then have a look at their Facebook page and the video review below.
