13 Ways to Die In a Zombie Apocalypse

$

0

If you love zombies, like everyone else, then I’m sure you’ve thought about what you would do when the eventual zombie apocalypse happens. Unfortunately for you, the only place you’ve gotten any ideas is from the movies. The kind of “advice” they spew out in the form of “plot” will make you the best seller on the McZombie dollar value menu before you know it. Basically you’d last about as long in the apocalypse as Lamar Odom’s wallet in a brothel.

Lucky for you, the folks at Escape from Zombies have come together with Dread Central to save your life by identifying 13 zombie movie ideas that totally work in movies but would make you a zombie shish kabob in real life. So, unless your life is a movie, do not try these at home… during the zombie apocalypse, that is.

1. Just act like a zombie… they’ll never know the difference.

See a massive mob of the living dead moseying your way? Just walk like a T-Rex that has Tourette’s and a broken leg, and no one will be the wiser. If you mimic their walk and growl, they’ll think you are one of them.

WRONG! Zombies use their sense of smell to track their prey. They’ll have a more acute sense of smell than we humans have now, and it will be on par with our ancestors who used to fight off cave bears and dinosaurs. Smell is the main reason they can tell each other from humans, and they aren’t eating each other all the time. They’ll sniff you out as a faux zombie within seconds.

Shawn of the Dead

2. Cover yourself in zombie gunk so they won’t notice you.

Let’s say during the zombie apocalypse you find yourself inside a building knee-deep in zombie corpses and you need to get out of there and back to your safe house… BUT swarming outside the building at every exit is a horde of those undead bastards. So you decide to grab some freshly dead zombie goo and lather yourself up. You’ll blend in since they use smell and all. You’ll be able to walk among them unharmed.

WRONG! First of all, if you have any open wounds, accidentally get some in your eye, swallow some, or get it too far up your nose, there’s a good chance you just infected yourself in the dumbest possible way. Second, you don’t know if “fresh zombie goo” will even mask the smell enough to turn them away from you. After all, the chances of any place having running water is very low so it’ll have been a long time since you had your last shower, and you know how stinky you get from just a long weekend on the couch doing the new “Let’s watch Netflix and chill” pickup line on that hottie you pretend to know.

Walking Dead

3. Splattering the dead without a face mask.

Without a doubt there will come a time where you’ll have no other choice but to fight your way out of a jam. So grab your trusty brains-bashing weapon and scream “Play Ball” as you wade neck-deep in a pool of zombies. Wearing a face mask of course, right? No?

WRONG! Let’s say that you are capable of bashing in a skull with one stroke. Are you also capable of dodging all the muck and grey matter that will come splattering out? Let me answer that for you, speedy… No, you are not. If any of that stuff gets in your mouth, eyes, or too far up your nose, guess what. You’ve just joined Team Zombie without getting bit.

Walking Dead

4. Blindly run into a building for supplies.

This is just poor planning on your part and will eventually lead to getting trapped inside where more zombies lay in wait for food delivery. It’s not hard to plan your route out and include a Plan B, C, D, E, or more. Never enter a building without at least knowing where the exits are. Keep in mind that once you are in a building, you should feel free to tear the walls down if you have to. If there’s only one way into a room via a door, there are probably many ways out via a drop ceiling or even knocking a hole through some drywall. They can bill you later for any damage… if “they” even survived the zombie apocalypse.

Latest Trailer for The Musk Channels The Wizard of Oz

Hot damn, this is one weird trailer. If it can even be called a trailer because it seems like a safe bet that it doesn’t contain any footage from the actual film, instead opting for a parody of The Wizard of Oz focusing on the film’s killer scarecrow. This time, Dorothy should not have followed the Yellow Brick Road…

The Musk is written/directed by George Nevada and stars Fabrizio Occhipinti, Gabrielle Bergère, and Antony Ferry.

There’s no word on when The Musk will be released, but you can head over to their website to stay updated. And man, if only other films could be as creative in their marketing.

Synopsis:
Farmer Tony Maio turns into a fierce mutant because of a meteorite impact on Earth. Disguised as a scarecrow in order to hide his appearance, he starts to kill people to satisfy his bloodlust.

7 of the Best Military Horror Movies

“I hate war only as a solider who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.” ~ Dwight D Eisenhower

War is hell and a horror in and of itself. It is not pleasant; it is shocking. There is nothing good about it, and it doesn’t really resolve anything. It changes one’s state of mind when having to live through it, changing that person into someone different, and they are never the same again.

Taking the horror of war and injecting it with other supernatural attire has made what I’ve found to be some of the most brilliant horror movies out there. Here are a few of the best, in no particular order.

Outpost

Dog Soldiers (2002)

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Starring some great actors like Kevin McKid and Liam Cunningham, it is truly not only one of the best written military horror movies but also one of the best werewolf horror movies as well.

Deathwatch (2002)

Set in WWI, the film follows a group of British soldiers stuck in a trench along the front of the enemy line along with a German soldier whom they’ve captured.  They find that there is evil lurking amongst them… or is it just in their own minds?

The Objective (2008)

This one is set in more modern times in Afghanistan. Superstitions and paranoia run high in the desert for these soldiers, and nothing is what it seems. I found this movie to be intriguing, and it kept me interested to the end.

Vin Diesel Announces New Riddick Film Furia and TV Spinoff Merc City

Sure, we all love the Fast and Furious movies, but the Riddick films crafted by Vin Diesel and David Twohy are a bit more in line with horror fans’ sensibilities, which is why this latest news has us pretty excited.

Yesterday Diesel revealed on Instagram:

Last night Our company had a party to launch Our TV division. Very exciting. MERC CITY is a show that will follow the Mercs and Bounty Hunters of the Riddick Universe. Next Month, DT begins writing the next Chapter in the Chronicles of Riddick… FURIA. #HappyFurianFriday

“DT” obviously refers to Twohy, and as people who have seen the existing trilogy, which began in 2000 with Pitch Black, are aware, Diesel’s character hails from the planet “Furya.” We’re not sure if they’ve changed the spelling or if “Furia” is a mistake.  Either way, things should be getting interesting.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for more details as they come.

Brad Pitt Producing Adaptation of Sci-fi Novel Illuminae

Thank you, Brad Pitt, for finally realizing that nobody gives a shit about your personal life or relationships and actually doing stuff that people will appreciate. Not only is he producing Bong Joon-Ho’s monster movie Okja via his company Plan B, but he’s also come on board an adaptation of this year’s sci-fi novel Illuminae.

Written by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, it’s set in the year 2575 and follows two huge corporations at war on a distant planet, with a young hacker named Kady uncovering a secret that places her in their crosshairs. As she flees from the planet with her boyfriend due to the outbreak of a plague, she is pursued by a hostile warship that has been sent to silence her permanently.

The book is an epistolary, similar to Dracula, meaning that it is told in the form of various documents, files, reports, etc., rather than having a traditional narrative. It’s also the first in a trilogy so if the film’s a success, expect more.

Alongside Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Sarah Esberg will also produce.

Stung (Blu-ray)

stung blu-rayStarring Matt O’Leary, Jessica Cook, Lance Henriksen, Clifton Collins, Jr.

Directed by Benni Diez

Distributed by Scream Factory

If there is one subgenre in horror of which I am a complete and total sucker, it is the creature feature. As someone who was raised on a hearty diet of all things monstrous (chief among them Godzilla), there are few beastly pictures I won’t at least give a watch to… unless they were made within the past, oh, fifteen years. What happened? I hate to beat a dead horse, but it’s because of CGI.

Unless filmmakers are working with a huge budget, chances are any titular creature is going to look like a poorly-rendered cartoon that clumsily interacts with the tangible world around it. I’ll take the bizarro mutant bear from Prophecy (1979) over any of the could-be-fun shlock Syfy pumps out on a seemingly weekly basis, and that’s because that ugly-ass bear looks like it inhabits the real world.

But let me step off this soapbox because this review isn’t about to bash Stung (2015). First-time feature director Benni Diez’s tale of killer wasps attacking high society guests at a party makes great use of some old-school techniques. The picture isn’t a clear winner, due to some bland scripting and weak humor – and a bit of mediocre CGI – but in an era of crappy creature features this is one of the more fun entries.

Catering buddies Julia (Jessica Cook) and Paul (Matt O’Leary) are on their way to work an event at a mansion out in the countryside. Julia’s business is on the rocks and she’s counting on this gig to help get things back on track. Paul, meanwhile, has tagged along seemingly as an excuse to ogle Julia. Think he’ll find a moment to espouse his unrequited love? Duh. They arrive and meet Sydney (Clifton Collins, Jr.), son of the mansion’s owner, Mrs. Perch (Eve Slatner), who wastes no time in cracking open a cold one. Soon the backyard is filled with guests, including Mayor Carruthers (Lance Henriksen), and everyone is having a boozy blast. But then Paul begins to notice wasps buzzing about; wasps that are much larger than normal size. Not long after these wasps are spotted one of the guests is stung to death… and a human-sized wasp grotesquely emerges from her corpse.

Once enough guests have been stung to death and used as human hosts to supply an army of gargantuan wasps, our group of heroes – Julia, Paul, Carruthers, Sydney and his mom – make their way inside the home and down to the basement. Although they’re away from the melee, any horror fan worth his weight in blood knows they won’t be out of danger for long. Cut off from the outside world and unable to call for help, the group must band together and fight off these winged intruders before everyone gets… stung. I’m sorry, but I had to.

Even if the script and characters are a big bag of whatever, Diez gets two big components right: the creatures and the action. The influence of embiggened-animal master Bert I. Gordon is channeled here as the wasps vastly increase in size after gestation (which lasts all of a few seconds) and promptly continue attacking any humans in sight. Instead of focusing entirely on showing off full-scale creatures – a costly endeavor – Diez chooses to shoot parts of the whole; a limb here, a wing there… and lots of ooey, gooey, oozing slimy metamorphosis. Once the creatures’ size has been established, Diez allows minor practical effects to hold our focus, all while a flurry of activity is occurring in the background. Filling the frame in both the foreground and background makes the party attack appear bigger than it would have otherwise. Smart. Practical effects take a backseat just as the film makes a late-in-the-game reveal, but overall this film is filled with more practical creature work than the average feature of this ilk.

Acting-wise, there’s nothing particularly compelling about the two leads at all, but thanks to the gravitas of Lance Henriksen – and to a lesser degree, Clifton Collins, Jr., who is always great to watch – the picture isn’t just a fluffy showcase for cool creatures. And for those of you who might be convinced Henriksen bites the dust early on because he’s the one big name, well, you’re going to be pleasantly surprised.

Stung is a fun throwback to those animal attack pictures of the ‘70s, when usually-small creatures gained significant size and showed humanity what might happen if we weren’t at the top of the food chain. If the script had been tighter this could have been one of the year’s most fun films; as it stands, it’s still a good time for nature-run-amok aficionados who have been yearning for something greater than the typical drivel.

As one might expect, the 2.40:1 1080p image is rather sharp and nicely detailed, with strong color reproduction and solid textures. Being that most of the FX work is practical, it fits in seamlessly with the real-world environments. Conversely, the CGI often looks out of place and incongruent with the organic settings. Definition takes a hit when the action moves into darkness, but the image remains stable for the most part.

An English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound track does a fantastic job of delivering the audible action. Speakers are buzzing with a bevy of activity, most notably from the large wasp community which flies around the soundfield providing excellent immersion. Expect to hear plenty from the low end, too, as there are many bombastic moments where the track hits those low frequencies perfectly. There is also an English DTS-HD MA 2.0 track included. Subtitles are available in English SDH and Spanish.

An audio commentary is included, featuring director Benni Diez, producer Benjamin Munz, and writer Adam Aresty. This track hits all the expected topics and provides a nice overview of the film’s production process.

“Making of Stung” – This piece examines the film’s pre-production, shooting, and offers up some behind-the-scenes glimpses at the actors and FX work.

“Production Blog” – This is a compilation of production diaries as the movie moves from planning to shooting.

The film’s theatrical trailer is included in HD.

The Crow Remake Shooting Next Year; Star Not Yet Found

We’ve written so many news stories about the planned reboot of The Crow that we must admit we’re starting to lose both interest and faith, but new reports suggest that the project is still being developed – despite Relativity filing for bankruptcy and several stars dropping out.

The latest word comes from Variety, who nabbed an interview with producer Edward R. Pressman. He seems confident that the film will begin shooting next year, and Corin Hardy (The Hallow) is still attached to direct. Who’s playing Eric Draven? The role has yet to be filled.

Despite Relativity’s problems, we’re going ahead now,” Pressman told the outlet. “Relativity is putting up a good amount of money to do that. They are putting up significant holding money. They are moving ahead in a constructive and positive way, and [head of Relativity] Ryan Kavanaugh seems totally committed to this theme.”

Corin and I are discussing as we speak who to go to, to play The Crow,” he added. “We’ll find The Crow and shoot it in the first half of next year.”

The original 1994 film was directed by Alex Proyas and starred Brandon Lee in his final movie role. Based on James O’ Barr’s neo-noir comic book novel first published in 1989, the film centers on Eric Draven, a murdered man who comes back to life as an undead avenger.

Dead Draw Trailer and Artwork Take Aim at Your Past

On tap right now we have the teaser trailer and artwork for Dead Draw, which we first brought to your attention back in January of 2014. See? Told you we’d keep an eye on it!

From the Press Release:
Dead Draw, an independent feature starring Gil Bellows (The Shawshank Redemption, Parkland), Bitsie Tulloch (“Grimm,” Concussion), Michael Eklund (The Divide, Eadweard), and Brit Shaw (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension) released its teaser trailer and website this week.

Written, directed, and edited by Brian Klemesrud of the Indiana-based Rocket3, LLC, the film follows four career criminals who plan the perfect heist: 25 million dollars, 8 safety deposit boxes, and months before anyone will know it’s gone. But when they discover their getaway pilot brutally murdered, they quickly understand someone knew about the job and set them up. Stranded in a frozen hangar, held hostage by someone outside, loyalty turns to suspicion and friends turn to enemies. Now it’s a race against time as the band of thieves try to uncover the rat and escape their troubled pasts… if they can survive the night.

A dark and intricately structured genre film, Dead Draw is a story where every motive is questioned, every moment is critical, and every secret could prove fatal.

Filmed in the record-cold polar vortex of 2014, outdoors and at night in Chicago and Lincoln, IL, Dead Draw is an unnerving, intense, claustrophobic crime-thriller. The film is completed, and the filmmakers are planning its 2016 festival run. It also stars Slaine Carrol (The Town), Faust Checho (Strange Nature), and Andy Ahrens (“Chicago Fire”).

While Dead Draw is Klemesrud’s debut feature, he has served as creative director on over 200 commercials and director on over a dozen shorts. He produced the film with actor/producer Faust Checho of FSC Productions, cinematographer/producer Jim Timperman, and producers Dan Kolen and Katie Bryan.

The team of Mark Yaeger (Yoko, Queen of the Desert) and Gueorgui Linev from the band Kan Wakan composed the original score. Philippe Thibaultwas the Digital Effects Supervisor. Touring member of Iron and Wine Jim Becker and Chicago singer-songwriter Becky Levi composed the many 1950s-style tracks that set the tone as diegetic music throughout the film.

sandykingMaster of horror John Carpenter and his long-time producing partner Sandy King are about to get really busy as word has come via the Killer POV podcast that they’re working on four television projects!

Right now, there’s four series waiting to go to network,” said King. “As far as I’m concerned, we’ll do all of them. I mean, they’re great, and they’re different from anything that’s out there, and they again push the boundaries of what’s horror. [John] would be directing pilots, and we would be executive producing them. There’s sci-fi, there’s horror, there’s one that I guess would be [a] sci-fi/horror futuristic kind of thing. They’re all across the board. I think they’ll fulfill what people expect out of him by also being unpredictable.

Also, King hinted that Carpenter may be bringing his live music shows to the States. Keep an eye on everything Carpenter related here.

Gravitas Ventures Bringing Home Barney Thomson

We’ve been talking about The Legend of Barney Thomson for a while now, and Gravitas Ventures has just announced it will be bringing the flick home with a shortened title Stateside. Read on for details.

From the Press Release:
Gravitas Ventures has secured U.S. rights to Barney Thomson, a uniquely twisted comedic thriller written by Richard Cowan and Colin McLaren and directed by “Once Upon a Time” star Robert Carlyle – his first feature film directorial effort. The film, which also stars Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks), Ray Winstone (Hugo), and Tom Courtenay (The Golden Compass), premiered earlier this year at the opening night of Edinburgh Film Festival and has gone on to be a commercial and critical success in the UK. The film recently won “Beast Feature Film” from BAFTA Scotland, while Emma Thompson won the BAFTA Scotland award for “Best Actress.”

Gravitas will release the film on demand on February 2, 2016, and in theaters on March 11, 2016.
Deemed “deliciously macabre” by the UK’s Daily Telegraph, the film tells the titular tale of Barney Thomson (Carlyle), an awkward, shy Glasgow barber, living a life of desperate mediocrity. His mother (Thompson) offers little encouragement, as she is far too self-absorbed, chain-smoking between absurd social outings in her animal print wardrobe. Little does Barney know how his stale and stagnant life is about to go from 0 to 60 in mere seconds when he accidentally enters the dark, grotesque, and comically absurd life of a serial killer.

“We are excited to partner with Gravitas on this inimitable project,” stated producer John G. Lenic. “Myriad believes in their experience raising awareness for theatrical and VOD titles.”

“With its blend of crime caper, dark comedy, and clever Scottish sensibility, we believe Barney Thomson will delight audiences,” said Nolan Gallagher, Founder and CEO of Gravitas Ventures.

The film was adapted by Richard Cowan and Colin McLaren from the first book in “The Barbershop Seven” series by Douglas Lindsay. Cowan also served as a producer on Barney Thomson along with Holly Brydson, Brian Coffey, Kaleena Kiff, and John G. Lenic. Doug Apatow and Kirk D’Amico are the executive producers. The film was financed by Westerkirk Capital, Creative Scotland, and Telefilm Canada and is a Canadian/UK co production. Myriad Pictures is handling worldwide sales on the film.

A frightening urban legend comes to life in the new film from Tony Wash, entitled The Rake. Read on for the early details.

Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls Getting Remastered

If you’re a fan of David Cage and his unique, innovative approach to video game narratives and you want something to pass the time until Detroit: Become Human comes out, then you’re in luck as both Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls are getting the remaster treatment, as announced via the PlayStation Blog.

Both games were directed by Cage via his studio, Quantic Dream, and attempted to be as cinematic as a video game could possibly be. Heavy Rain, the story of how ordinary people’s lives are affected by a serial killer, was widely considered to be a masterpiece that showed just how strong an auteur Cage truly was. Beyond: Two Souls, about the psychic bond between a CIA operative and a doctor, was met with a less warm reaction, with one area of criticism being how it incorporated clunky shooter mechanics into the mix to be more appealing to the general gamer crowd.

Beyond: Two Souls will be released on November 26, 2015, on the PlayStation Store and will feature the following enhancements:

  • Enhanced 1080p graphics including motion blur, bloom, and depth of field effects as well as improved lighting and shadows. The game also makes use of the DualShock 4 speaker to improve immersion when playing as the Entity
  • Decisions are highlighted at the end of each scene and compared with those made by other players
  • You can now play the game in chronological order right from the start – a much requested feature in the PS3 version!
  • Increased difficulty in a number of fight scenes, combined with improved controls for action sequences
  • Includes the “Enhanced Experiments” DLC in the base game

Heavy Rain will be released digitally on March 1, 2016, and on March 2nd a boxed edition of the remasters of both games will be released.

The launch trailer for the PS4 version of Beyond: Two Souls is below, and just in case you need any more convincing of Cage’s eccentric brilliance, I’ve also included his PS4 tech demo/short film The Dark Sorcerer.

It used to be that a Friday night timeslot was the kiss of death for a TV series, but in these days of DVRs and Digital/On Demand viewing, that’s no longer the case.  Otherwise, we might be a bit worried by this latest bit of news from The CW.

The network announced its new schedule today, which includes the series debut of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” and the Season 3 premiere of “The 100” on Thursday, January 21, 2016.  With both of those shows taking over Thursday nights, where does that leave CW staples “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals”? As mentioned above, they’re on the move to Friday.

Starting January 29, 2016, the Salvatore brothers and the First Family of vampires head to Friday nights to kick off the weekend with two hours of high-stakes drama, with “The Vampire Diaries” (8:00-9:00pm ET/PT) followed by “The Originals” (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT). This season “TVD” and “TO” are among the most heavily time-shifted series on television; both shows more than triple their audiences when viewing beyond the night of air is tallied across DVR, Digital, and VOD platforms.

“The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” are both enjoying a Thanksgiving hiatus this week, returning on Thursday, December 3rd, with the following episodes:

“The Vampire Diaries” Episode 7.08 – “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” (12/3/15; 8:00-9:00 pm)
A FRACTURED FAMILY — As Julian (guest star Todd Lasance) and Lily (guest star Annie Wersching) throw a party to celebrate Mary Louise (guest star Teressa Liane) and Nora’s (guest star Scarlett Byrne) anniversary, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) set in motion a risky plan to eliminate a new threat posed by Julian. Meanwhile, following a major revelation uncovered by Valerie (guest star Elizabeth Blackmore), Caroline (Candice King) is forced to face her new reality, even as it threatens to destroy her relationship with Stefan. Finally, determined to do what’s best for her family, Lily makes the most difficult decision of her life. Michael Malarkey and Zach Roerig also star. Leslie Libman directed the episode written by Brett Matthews.

“The Originals” Episode 3.08 – “The Other Girl in New Orleans” (12/3/15; 9:00-10:00 pm)
TROUBLE IN CRESCENT CITY – After learning that Cami’s (Leah Pipes) life is in danger and Aurora (guest star Rebecca Breeds) may be to blame, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is forced to engage in another one of her devious games and follows a series of clues she’s left behind for him. Meanwhile, Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Freya (Riley Voelkel), and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) take drastic measures against Tristan (guest star Oliver Auckland) when they discover he holds a valuable piece of information they need. Elsewhere, Aya (guest star Tracy Ifeachor) gives Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) an ultimatum that leaves him with a difficult decision to make, while tensions between Hayley and Jackson cause her to reevaluate her involvement in Mikaelson family matters. Kellie Cyrus directed the episode written by Michael Russo and Michael Narducci.
