Brentwood Strangler Trailer Released Prior to World Premiere

Ahead of its world premiere December 1st in Sydney, Australia, the trailer for John Fitzpatrick’s  Brentwood Strangler has arrived along with the short film’s official website. We have all the details right here!

If you’ll be in Sydney on Tuesday, be sure to check out the A Night of Horror International Film Festival to see Brentwood Strangler. It’s playing as part of the Australian Horror Gala Program #3 that kicks off at 9PM local time.

From John Fitzpatrick, writer/director of the acclaimed short thriller Skypemare, and Far From Everything Films, comes the highly anticipated follow-up, Brentwood Strangler. With a unique Christmas setting, beautifully shot, the film is a satirical and at times brutal cinematic experience with an incredible cast, led by Jordan Ladd.  It is an homage to classic thrillers of the past such as Strangers on a Train, Marnie, and Psycho.

Ladd’s co-stars include Maximilian Osinski, Annika Marks, Adam J. Yeend, Ryan Dillon, and veteran actor Cameron Daddo.

Brentwood Strangler is a film bound to be recognized not just by horror fans, but all fans of cinema for being exciting and distinctive with a focus on story and character, saluting a genre, bending it, and leaving the audience wanting more.

Says Fitzpatrick of the film’s storyline: “Brentwood Strangler is a truly unique film, a story simply about two people whose worlds collide, who perhaps never should have… and from there it takes its course, and there is where it also ends. The film makes an effort to allow you to feel its simplicity, its economy of shots, and affords you the chance to quietly just watch as the fated duo of Floyd and Maggie play out their slice of life for the viewer. This is something I think is tragically missing from films today, and my hope is that film festivals around the world will recognize that this is what is unique about our film… Brentwood Strangler represents so many things as I move forward with my directing career, but mostly it represents a true sense of the independent spirit, the motivation to try something that one might never attempt and to embark on a challenge that, on the surface, appears, well, simple but actually is one of the greater challenges I’ve ever faced. Simplicity, as it turns out, is quite complex. And for that I am grateful…

Synopsis:
It’s the holiday season in Los Angeles, and women are being strangled to death in the Westwood area. Maggie, a lonely woman, goes on a blind date, unbeknownst to her that her date is an active and notorious serial killer, The Brentwood Strangler. Is love in the air? Or is Maggie in for the worst (and last) date of her life?

Get more info at BrentwoodStrangler.com and on the film’s Facebook page.

First Stone Age Slasher Film B.C. Butcher Coming from Troma

What? You were under the impression that serial killers and mass murderers were just a modern man problem! Seventeen-year-old director Kansas Bowling is out to prove otherwise with her new film B.C. Butcher.

From the Press Release:
The Troma Team is pleased to announce the acquisition of B.C. BUTCHER, the first ever prehistoric slasher flick courtesy of the mind of wunderkind Kansas Bowling. Displaying talent and imagination that far surpasses her seventeen years, the film features amputations, disembowelment, psychedelic dreams, cute cave chicks, buff dudes in loin cloths, and a punk rock band playing guitars made out of watermelons. B.C. BUTCHER truly has something for everyone!

Shot entirely on 16mm film, the movie comes from a script written by Ms. Bowling and her high school friend Kenzie Givens and can be described as a potent mix between Quest for Fire, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.

After a group of contemptuous cavewomen torture and kill one of their own over a romantic betrayal, a disfigured loner, known only as The Butcher (Dwayne Johnson (not The Rock)), discovers and falls deeply in love with the mutilated corpse. He proceeds on a bloody path of revenge, picking off the sexy murderers one by one.

The film is narrated by Kadeem Hardison (“A Different World,” Troma’s Def by Tempation) and features Kato Kaelin (BASEketball) alongside a host of up-and-coming actresses including: Leilani Fideler (“Pretty Little Liars”), Parker Love Bowling, Natasha Halevi, Devyn Leah, Molly Elizabeth Ring, and Miranda Robin. The film also boasts cameo appearances by Duck-Duck and Rodney Bingenheimer, California’s KROQ DJ, who lovingly refers to B.C. BUTCHER as the “prehistoric Manson girls.”

Featuring a rock & roll soundtrack from The Ugly Kids, B.C. BUTCHER is no doubt the definitive tongue-in-cheek horror film set in the Paleolithic Era. Troma is excited to share B.C. BUTCHER with the world in early 2016!

What Big Eyes You’ll Have Watching Eric Balfour and Lil’ Romeo Battle Werewolves in the Little Dead Rotting Hood Trailer

$

Hey there, Little Dead Rotting Hood, you sure are looking good. You’re everything the big bad Asylum could produce.

The Asylum/Cinedigm production Little Dead Rotting Hood stars Eric Balfour (“Haven,” Skyline) as a small town sheriff contending with a rash of wolf attacks. The old woman who lived in the woods had secretly kept the wolves at bay for years, but now that she’s dead, they’re baying at the moon once more. As the wolves grow more aggressive, the local residents fall prey, and an even greater evil emerges. The old woman’s granddaughter (Bianca A. Santos; Ouija, The DUFF) may be the town’s only hope to survive the bloody horror that has been unleashed.

Screenwriter/co-producer Gabriel Campisi and director Jared Cohn are behind this supernatural chiller with quite the impressive cast of co-stars: rapper-turned-actor Romeo Miller (aka Lil’ Romeo), Starship Troopers‘ Patrick Muldoon, soap opera star Heather Tom, and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” counselor Marina Sirtis.

You’ll have to wait until January 5th to see Little Dead Rotting Hood in all its gory… I mean glory… on DVD/Digital HD. Until then, the first trailer has bared its tooth and claws for what big eyes you have to behold.

Lionsgate and Alex Proyas Respond to Backlash Against Mostly White Cast in Gods of Egypt

In mid-November we got word that Gods of Egypt will be arriving in theaters on February 26th of next year with a predominantly white cast that includes Brenton Thwaites, Gerard Butler, Geoffrey Rush, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau; and folks didn’t waste any time critiquing that choice via social media as well as in our own comments section.  As DC regular Rottenjesus said, “I had no idea that so many pretty white people lived in Ancient Egypt!

Well, now Lionsgate, the distributor, and Alex Proyas, the director, have issued a joint statement with regard to the controversy.  Per Forbes:

From Alex Proyas: “The process of casting a movie has many complicated variables, but it is clear that our casting choices should have been more diverse. I sincerely apologize to those who are offended by the decisions we made.”

From Lionsgate: “We recognize that it is our responsibility to help ensure that casting decisions reflect the diversity and culture of the time periods portrayed. In this instance we failed to live up to our own standards of sensitivity and diversity, for which we sincerely apologize. Lionsgate is deeply committed to making films that reflect the diversity of our audiences. We have, can and will continue to do better.

A sign of the times or just lip service?  Let us know what you think below!

From director Alexander Proyas (The Crow; Dark City; I, Robot), comes a completely original action-adventure tale from a world before time began, when gods ruled the earth.

In order to save the world and bring his true love back to life, a clever mortal thief (Brenton Thwaites, Oculus) teams up with a powerful and vengeful god (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, “Game of Thrones”) to stop the god of darkness (Gerard Butler; Gamer, 300, Olympus Has Fallen), who hopes to destroy both this life and the afterlife. Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, and Geoffrey Rush co-star.

Don’t miss all the action and adventure with Gods of Egypt, coming to theaters February 26, 2016!

Synopsis:
In this spectacular action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero, Bek (Thwaites), undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful god Horus (Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Set (Butler), the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.

Thanksgiving Box Office: Victor Frankenstein DOA with a Dismal 12th Place Opening Weekend

$

It’s obvious that horror fans were either too full of turkey or too busy shopping for Black Friday deals to go to the multiplex this weekend because Thanksgiving’s sole genre release, Victor Frankenstein, was only able to muster up an estimated $2,350,000 (weekend)/$3,435,000 (since its 11/25 opening), giving the film a dismal 12th place in the holiday box office standings. Worldwide it earned $13,461,142, which is a bit better, but still…

Per Box Office Mojo, the big winner was, of course, The Hunter Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (review), which saw an estimated weekend gross of $51,600,000.  After two weeks, its US cume is $198,312,341 with a worldwide tally of $440,712,341. The finale is underperforming compared to its predecessors (at this point The Hunger Games‘ US total was $248,483,901, Catching Fire’s was $296,295,657, and Mockingjay – Part 1‘s was $225,680,904); but it’s still a decent sendoff for such a beloved franchise that came close to wearing out its welcome by unnecessarily splitting its finale into two parts.

Next weekend we’ll see what kind of appetite audiences have for the horror comedy Krampus. Will it end the year on a high note for the genre? Or will it land with a thud like a big ol’ lump of coal? Make your predictions below!

Zach Galligan Talks Next Gremlins Film; Sequel to Original

Chris Columbus, who wrote Gremlins, has pretty much promised that he’ll never allow the original classic to be remade, which is certainly music to our ears. This past week, star Zach Galligan confirmed that a new Gremlins film is in the works, and true to Columbus’ words, it’s NOT a remake.

As reported by ComicBook.com, the Gremlins star was on hand at Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square for a screening of the holiday favorite this past week, and much like Columbus before him, he promised an excited audience that Gizmo and friends aren’t being remade.

It’s not going to be a reboot,” Galligan told the crowd. “It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart, and as long as he is alive, it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be, and apparently are going to be doing, is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.

All of the elements from the first, at least the first Gremlins movie — Chris Columbus didn’t really have much to do with the second Gremlins movie so I don’t know how he feels about that — but all of the things and events that happened in the first one will be referred to,” the actor continued. “And apparently some of the characters from the first one will reappear in the new one they are planning right now. I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.”

The new Gremlins film is being written by Carl Ellsworth. Columbus will co-produce with Steven Spielberg.

Check out Galligan’s comments below.

Victor Frankenstein (2015)

victorfrankenstein-posterStarring James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe, Andrew Scott, Mark Gatiss, Jessica Brown Findlay, Freddie Fox, Callum Turner

Directed by Paul McGuigan

Here at Dread Central I am the resident Frankenstein aficionado. I love everything Frankenstein and have millions of collectibles scattered about my home and office. When news broke of a new film starring James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, I was elated. And what’s this? It’s written by Max Landis? Color me super intrigued. I had been waiting endlessly, and finally this past weekend the release was upon us.

The first red flag? No advance screenings. Yep, no screenings were held in L.A. for critics (never a good sign) so that meant a review would have to wait until one of us saw the movie around here. I took it in a couple of days ago so here I am… profoundly disappointed.

We live in a world of origin stories, and while that can be okay, sometimes it just doesn’t work. For all intents and purposes Victor Frankenstein should have just been labeled Frankenstein Begins as just when things start to get interesting, it ends.

To start, we’re introduced to a nameless circus hunchback played with gusto and glee by Radcliffe. After seeing his trapeze artist girl crush (Findlay) suffer a horrible accident during a performance, our happy humper leaps into action to help save her life with the assistance of an onlooker, Victor Frankenstein (McAvoy), who is astonished by the carney’s medical knowledge. Later on Victor helps said hunchback escape, fixes his hump, and names him Igor.

You see, given Igor’s raw medical know-how Victor deems him the perfect assistant to help him with his experiments, and thus a bromance is born. Truth be told, the first half of the film is quite good. McAvoy’s portrayal of a flawed and a bit mad Victor Frankenstein is nothing short of brilliant and, dare I say it, could be one of my absolute favorites. At the end of the day, though, we need a Monster to make this a true Frankenstein film. The only problem? The filmmakers remembered this fact way too late.

The last half of the film leading up to the creation of the Modern Prometheus is spent meandering around silly subplots which go nowhere. In fact, we never even get to see the creature being created. No grave robbing. No brain stealing. No nothing really, except for a loose plot point concerning a detective (Scott) dying to solve a case revolving around missing animal parts while preaching about the Lord. After about 30 minutes of nonsense we finally get to Frankenstein’s castle with about 10 minutes of the movie to go.

At the end of the day we get about 15 minutes of monster action total, and that’s including a quick go-around with a pissed-off reanimated monkey around the film’s midway point. The creature itself is a square-jawed imposing beast who resembles Marv from Sin City, but he doesn’t have time to do anything interesting before he’s stricken down by his creators. It’s as if he’s only there to say, “See? This is a Frankenstein movie!

Let me be clear… Victor Frankenstein is not a retelling of the classic Mary Shelley tale, but instead it’s a possible prequel to it that draws from the source material in dribs and drabs, creating a well acted yet mediocre, unfocused, and forgettable experience.

All the lightning in the world cannot save this one from flatlining halfway through. Victor Frankenstein is far from electrifying, and hopefully the next several Frankenstein-based projects can learn from its missteps… although I wouldn’t hold my breath.

More New Artwork Released for The X-Files

While we’d love to see more footage from the upcoming six-episode “The X-Files” event series, what we have to share today is yet another poster.  This one is courtesy of EW.

“X” marks the spot!

“The X-Files” returns to Fox with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, January 24, 2016 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC Championship Game, and continuing with its time period premiere on Monday, January 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their iconic roles as Agent Fox Mulder and Agent Dana Scully in a mixture of stand-alone investigative episodes and those that further the original show’s seminal mythology. In the opening episode, Mulder and Scully take on a case of a possible alien abductee.

The all-new episodes will feature appearances by guest stars including Joel McHale (“Community”), Robbie Amell (“The Flash”), Lauren Ambrose (“Dig,” “Six Feet Under”), Annabeth Gish (“The Bridge”), Annet Mahendru (“The Americans”), Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”), and William B. Davis, who reprises his role as “Cigarette Smoking Man.” Three of the episodes are written and directed by Chris Carter, with the remaining new episodes written and directed by original series veterans Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan, and James Wong.

“The X-Files” originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned sixteen Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena. “The X-Files” is a production of 20th Century Fox Television in association with Ten Thirteen Productions. Carter is executive producer and creator of the series. Glen Morgan also serves as an executive producer.

More casting news has come in for CBS’s upcoming summer series “BrainDead” as Deadline reports that Danny Pino (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Cold Case”) will be joining the fray. We also learned today via the network’s press site that Tony Award-winning actress Nikki M. James has signed on to the series.

“BrainDead” is a comic-thriller set in the world of Washington, D.C., politics that hails from Robert and Michelle King, creators and executive producers of “The Good Wife.” Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Laurel, a young, fresh-faced Hill staffer whose first job in D.C. leads her to discover two things: The government has stopped working, and alien spawn have come to Earth and eaten the brains of a growing number of Congressmen and Hill staffers.

Pino (pictured below) will play Luke, Laurel’s older brother, the Democratic Whip Senator from Maryland. James will play Rochelle, a medical resident whose father died as the result of a mysterious infection; she and Laurel team up to learn what happened to her father and protect others from the same fate.

The previously announced Aaron Tveit will play Gareth, a Republican operative whose wit is only trumped by his pragmatism. The Legislative Director to a top Republican senator, Gareth is smart, hard-working, and ultimately responsible for helping to save the world.

“BrainDead” is produced by CBS Television Studios. Robert and Michelle King, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, Brooke Kennedy, and Liz Glotzer will serve as executive producers for CBS Television Studios, Scott Free Productions, and King Size Productions, all of whom previously collaborated on “The Good Wife.” Judy Smith will serve as co-executive producer.

The series will be distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution and worldwide by CBS Studios International.
