Vincent Price Shares A Christmas Carol

$
0
0

The news is slow (which is just fine by us, as spiked eggnog is the order of the week; we recommend Jack Daniel’s brand Vanilla Spice, BTW) so it’s afforded us time to seek out some holiday treats for you guys! This could be the coolest one ever.

Back in 1949 the great Vincent Price narrated a short television telling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Price, who could read us the McDonald’s menu and have us transfixed, may seem like an odd choice to have host this tale of holiday joy; but if you think about it, who better to bring us one of the most beloved ghost stories of our time?

There are a couple of other true oddities about this presentation though; for one, instead of A Christmas Carol, it’s titled The Christmas Carol, and lastly, of all things, Ebenezer Scrooge’s name is actually spelled wrong in the credits!

Sit back, grab your eggnog, power down the lights, and fire up the candles… Merry Christmas!

Stuart Bedford directs the flick, which is set for release during next year’s holiday season.

We’ve always been fascinated by exploitation films,” co-writers Stuart Bedford and Stu Jopia said of the project. “Good Tidings is our love letter to those phenomenal slashers from the ’70s and ’80s, tied together with festive satire: Christmas is cruel to the poor. Christmas movies are our favorite holiday movies – lots of fun to be had at this festive time – and a revenge/siege movie is exactly what Christmastime has been dying for.

Heir (2015)

HeirStarring Robert Nolan, Bill Oberst, Jr., Mateo D’Avino

Directed by Richard Powell

Richard Powell’s short film Heir distances itself from your typical short film. Generally, shorts provide a quick punch to the face, leaving viewers reeling and craving more. The reason being, shorts rarely ever cover a wide story scope. In a sense, most could be considered a wild ride through just a few truncated scenes. They’re a bit like teasers in that sense. So when a short comes along and tells an expansive tale in just a few brief minutes, we pay very close attention.

Heir is that rarity that defies all odds. This isn’t a single scene stretched for shocks; this is a comprehensive story – condensed, yes – but a full story all the same. To call it a disconcerting story may actually be an extreme understatement.

Gordon splits parental duties (this isn’t a clearly illustrated plot point, but the indication is there) with his estranged wife. His son, Paul, carries the emotional distress of a family torn apart, and he isn’t always excited to see his father, who’s been fighting to manage plenty of personal issues himself. But a meeting is arranged among Gordon, Paul, and Paul’s mother; it’s Gordon’s time for visitation. It’s a meeting that will alter the course of a strained father/son relationship to an unimaginable degree.

Father and son head to a local diner where they meet with Denis, Gordon’s longtime acquaintance. Denis rings as a strange individual immediately. He’s socially awkward, edgy, and all but screams pedophile. But the truth is Denis isn’t just a strange character, he’s got a sinister secret, and he plans to introduce his true self to Paul. Moments later the boy is drugged, left unconscious. Gordon, for one reason or another, allows his son to remain in harm’s way. And harm does indeed befall the boy, as we quickly learn of Denis’ true motives and Denis’ true nature, which isn’t exactly of the human variety.

The tension in the picture (which looks fantastic, for the record) is palpable. The twist is absolutely brilliant, guaranteed to send shockwaves through the viewer. And the onscreen performances are haunting. Bill Oberst, Jr., turns in one stunning and unsettling performance, and Robert Nolan, who plays Gordon, is just as chilling, albeit for different reasons altogether.

Once the film’s three focal players share the frame, things escalate from eerie to nauseating and eventually downright paralyzing. While we won’t spill too many details of the story, you can bet that Heir will leave you juggling a myriad of emotions, with fear and disgust fronting the pack. If you’re a parent, you may opt to skip this one entirely. That said, if you’re a fanatic for original films that deliver shock and awe through every transition, you should seek this one out immediately. It’s heartbreaking and stomach-turning. It’s also one of the greatest short films to be released in 2015.

New Lucifer Promo Indulges Your Forbidden Desires

Another promo has arrived for Fox’s upcoming “Lucifer,” and while we’re still not sure if it’s truly Dread-worthy, we thought we’d share this latest teaser with you since it’s about something we all have… forbidden desires.

“Lucifer,” starring Tom Ellis, premieres Monday, January 25th. He gives bad a good name!

About “Lucifer”:
The Devil has come to Los Angeles…

Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, “Lucifer” is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR (Tom Ellis, “Merlin”) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub. Charming, charismatic, and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women, and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux.

For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him – as well as his best friend and confidante, MAZIKEEN aka MAZE (Lesley-Ann Brandt, “The Librarians”), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective CHLOE DANCER (Lauren German, “Chicago Fire”), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it.

As they work together to solve the pop star’s murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Accustomed to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, Lucifer is intrigued by Chloe’s apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel AMENADIEL (DB Woodside; “Suits,” “24”), has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld.  Can the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil?

Midnight in the Desert Continues; Art Bell May Return Unannounced

A couple of weeks ago Art Bell announced that he was hanging it up due to safety issues, and the future of his recently launched show Midnight in the Desert was up in the air. Controversy ensued.

Since then the show’s producer, Heather Wade, took over the program; and as she puts it, she’s “keeping the lights on for Art should he decide to return.” After a rocky start, and of course it would have been rocky for anyone, Wade has begun to come into her own and is getting better with every show under the guidance of Bell, who’s working with her behind the scenes. The guests have been up to snuff, and the discussions have been as compelling as ever.

No matter how you slice it,  Art’s fingerprints are all over the show, and we believe that one day he’ll be back. Until then we highly recommend that you continue to keep the torch lit and the fires burning if you’re a fan of paranormal talk radio. Midnight in the Desert is still very much the top of the heap.

Midnight in the Desert airs every Monday to Friday from 9:00 PM Pacific to 12:00 Midnight. You can listen to Heather Wade LIVE on your smartphone or tablet using the TuneIn Radio app. Download the FREE TuneIn Radio app, and search for and follow the Dark Matter Digital Network, the home for all things Art Bell and paranormal related.

Another familiar face has left us entirely too soon as the family of Lost Boys actor Brooke McCarter announced via Facebook that Brooke has passed on at the all too young age of 52 due to a genetic liver condition.

The McCarter family is heartbroken to share the news that Brooke McCarter passed away December 22, 2015 from the genetic liver condition alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AAT). He was 52.  Brooke was our loving son, brother, father, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Though widely recognized as Vampire Paul in The Lost Boys, McCarter also appeared on the 80s revival of “The Twilight Zone,” Herschell Gordon Lewis’ The Uh-Oh Show, and most recently in Thomas J. Churchill’s Emerging Past.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Brooke’s family, friends, and constituents. Rest easy, brother… sleep all day… live for the night!

The Boy Lays You Down to Sleep; Say Your Prayers

Two new TV spots for The Boy have arrived, and truth be told, the movie is looking pretty creepy. Check ’em out!

William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) directed the Stacey Menear-penned project, which is being released January 22, 2016. Lauren Cohan (“The Walking Dead”), Jim Norton (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Diana Hardcastle (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Ben Robson (“Vikings”), Rupert Evans (Hellboy), and James Russell (“Blue Bloods”) star.

Producing are Lakeshore’s Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg, Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Adam Stone, along with Jim Wedaa.

Synopsis:
Greta (Cohan), a young American woman looking to escape a troubled past, takes a job in a small England village as a nanny for a wealthy couple’s 8-year-old son while they take a long vacation. She arrives at the remote manor to discover that things are not quite right. The surprisingly elderly Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire (Norton and Hardcastle) have a list of strict rules for her to follow in caring for their son, Brahms, and they mysteriously warn Greta that not following them precisely could result in something terrible. But the most disturbing realization of all is that Brahms is not an actual 8-year-old boy… he’s a life-sized porcelain doll, whom the doting parents care for and deeply love, just like a real boy.

“If you love him,” Greta is sternly instructed, “he will love you back.”

Isolated and alone, Greta notices that every time she breaks a rule, something strange happens in the house, and the doll reappears in different places and positions than where she put him. Compelled to uncover the mystery behind Brahms, Greta enlists the help of the local grocery delivery man, the only human being she sees for weeks, who shares horrifying details about the Heelshire family’s disturbing past, leading Greta to realize that she wasn’t just hired – she was chosen.

Evil Dead Gingerbread Cabin is Deliciously Evil

What’s better than a delicious gingerbread house? How about an Evil Dead-inspired cabin complete with a tiny Ash, a dismembered gingerbread man, and an edible Necronomicon? Believe it or not, such a thing actually exists, although it’s probably a little too cool to sink your sugar-soaked teeth into. How could you possibly consume such a wonderful and mind-blowing piece of art? You’re not that hungry, are you? Surely not. But it does look yummy. And evil. But mostly yummy.

The folks at Bloody Disgusting have the details:

Ash vs Gingerbread by Nicole Cooper & Johnny Larocque. We decided instead of a boring old gingerbread house for Christmas, we’d make the cottage from The Evil Dead, complete with a chainsaw Ash and some deadites that have seen better days.

Smartphone Demon Will Make You Think Twice About Selfies

Smartphones and selfies — what the hell? I know I’ll probably sound like an old guy who screams at kids who step on his precious, precious lawn, but I don’t get the appeal. It’s ego run amok, narcissism to a deranged degree. Not surprisingly, a few horror-centric filmmakers have taken this silly trend and dipped it into a bucket of deep-fried terror. Director Andrea Ricca’s Smartphone Demon explores what happens with some poor guy decides to snap a photo of himself. Are demons always lurking over our shoulders, ready to punish use for our vanity? God, I kind of hope so.

There’s not much to say about this one that won’t give away the surprise tucked gently into the last few seconds. Instead of simply reading about Smartphone Demon, carve a few minutes out of your day (or night) and enjoy the selfie-related terror. As if they weren’t horrifying enough already.

When you think of James Franco, the first thing that comes to mind is his comedic work… or Rise of the Planet of the Apes… or the godawful time he hosted the Oscars… or maybe even his famous “Look at My Sheeit” speech in Spring Breakers. Well, that could be changing with his new film project: Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?

THR is reporting that Franco is set to executive produce a remake of the cult classic for Lifetime. Franco penned the story for the remake, with a script written by Amber Coney (Class). Melanie Aitkenhead (Franco’s upcoming film Actors Anonymous) will direct, and Franco will exec produce with Vince Jolivette (Spring Breakers), Diane Sokolow (The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story), and Rachel Verno (The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story). The remake hails from Sony Pictures Television in association with Rabbit Bandini Productions and will air in 2016.

Franco’s collaboration with Lifetime will help mark the original film’s 20th anniversary. The original Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? starred Tori Spelling as a young woman with a dangerous and obsessive boyfriend. The film eventually aired on NBC in September 1996.
