Brett Kelly Channels 80s Creature Features with Ghastlies

$
0
0

Director Brett Kelly obviously has a thing for 80s creature features like Gremlins, Critters, and, to a lesser extent, Ghoulies. Hell, I’d toss Jeffrey Mandel’s 1989 horror flick Elves into that batch simply because I love it so. Kelly and company have been busy as of late putting together their flick Ghastlies, an homage to the kind of films I still find myself watching well into middle age.

If Kelly’s name sounds remotely familiar, then you may recall his previous foray into ’80s fare: 2014’s campy Homicycle. He’s also responsible for the Bonesetter films and generously gave the world both Attack of the Jurassic Shark and Attack of the Giant Leeches, among many others.

Plot details are few and far between at the moment, but, honestly, the movie is called Ghastlies and it involves miniature blood-thirsty creatures. If you’re looking for a story, then I honestly don’t know what else to say. However, check out the movie’s official Facebook page, as they may post more info about the plot in the near future. Meanwhile, the trailer is calling your name below.

Serurta Trailer is Loaded with Impressive Visuals

I hadn’t heard a thing about Serurta until the press release landed in my virtual lap. But holy smokes — this one looks impressive! Directed by Steven Lyons and co-written by Lyons and Merlyn Roberts (who also serves as producer), this visually rich horror/fantasy takes place in the wilds of ancient Britain. And judging by the insanity packed within the trailer below, their vision of the past is dark, bleak, and utterly terrifying. And probably NSFW, although that depends on where you work.

From the Press Release:
From director producer team Steven Lyons and Merlyn Roberts (Wyldewood Productions) comes Serurta (Sunbirth), an epic journey into the depths of ancient Britain, 700 years before the Roman conquest. The Friac, one of the ancient tribes of Britain are being driven from their land by the furious onslaught of the Celts, horse warriors arriving from the continent with weapons of iron and a thirst for conquest.

The last hope of his tribe Ontahil, is no hero nor warrior nevertheless he must face Serurta the greatest initiation of all. Ontahil travels to the desolate mist-enshrouded island of the dead. Stalked by the Terai, hunters with a taste for human flesh, he must find the immortal Shaman Kalaree, receive the blessing of the earth mother and begin his perilous descent into the underworld.

A tale of the Sun, the Moon, the Earth and mankind’s place in it all.

Serurta stars Merlyn Roberts, Carey Thring, Josh Lawton, Dawn Holdbrook, Julia Cornish, and Will Lord. Although we don’t have a release date quite yet, we still have a NSFW trailer, which you can view below. Be sure to stake out the flick’s official website for more info.

Found Footage Flick Seekers Will Make You Think Twice About Geocaching

Writer/director Michael Effenberger’s upcoming found footage flick Seekers explores the inherent dangers of geocaching. And while this premise has been tackled in the past (if you remember Are You Scared 2, then I’m sorry), Effenberger and his cast and crew are hoping to bring something a little different to the cinematic table. Since I’m a sucker for found footage movies (keyword: SUCKER), chances are Seekers will find its way to my television when it journeys to the US.

Synopsis:
Accompanied by a cameraman, the four friends Mike, Eileen, Sarah and George go into the deep forests of Poland to shoot a documentary about their hobby: Geocaching, a modern form of treasure hunting. In their search, the group finds an old abandoned hotel, where they spend the night. But the building hides a dark secret … As even a group member disappears in the middle of the night, the group experienced a night of horror. What began as a harmless trip is ending in a bloody nightmare!

Seekers hits Blu-ray and DVD on March 18, 2016, in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. As soon as we get a Stateside release date, we’ll definitely pass it along. If you don’t want to wait for us to deliver the info, spend some time watching the movie’s official Facebook page.

1980s Horror Anthology Comic Series Gore Shriek Making a Return

It was back in 1986 that FantaCo Enterprises launched Gore Shriek, an anthology comic series that collected together original horror stories. This year, if I’m doing the math correctly, the cult classic series celebrates it 30th anniversary, and guess what? It’s coming back, baby!

Over on Kickstarter, FantaCo just launched a fund-raising campaign for Gore Shriek Resurrectus: Volume One, a brand new comic book with brand new original stories. If all goes according to plan, that issue will ship in May, and Volume Two is already in the works for October.

These new editions of Gore Shriek come to you from Rough House Publishing in conjunction with FantaCo Publications. Both issues are licensed and authorized by the series creator and trademark holder, Tom Skulan.

Each issue will be 48-pages, carefully crafted to LOOK, FEEL, READ and even SMELL like the original Gore Shriek comic books – without any advertising,” FantaCo notes. “This is the real deal folks and will become prized additions to your collections!!

The campaign that’s currently running, it must be noted, is only for the first volume, and a separate one will be launched later this year for the second volume. The goal amount is just $6,000, and perks for donating include comic pre-orders, zombie busts, and special signed editions.

Head over to the Gore Shriek Resurrectus: Volume One Kickstater campaign to learn more and pitch in. And check out the cover art for both of the 30th anniversary issues below!

DNA Films Acquires Rights to Horror Novel The Loney

$

Released last year, Andrew Michael Hurley’s novel The Loney has already become a hot commodity in Hollywood, with studios vying to acquire the rights to adapt it. In the midst of much competition, a deal has been inked, and we’ve got all the details for ya today. Read on!

Per Deadline, DNA Films (28 Days Later, Dredd, Ex Machina) has nabbed the rights to the critically acclaimed and award-winning modern Gothic horror novel, which Stephen King hailed as “an amazing piece of fiction.”

Set in 1976 on a wild piece of English coastline somewhere in the north-west, The Loney follows fifteen-year-old Tonto and his older brother, Hanny, as they embark on their annual pilgrimage with their parents, a Catholic priest, and a collection of other oddballs to visit a nearby shrine. Tonto and Hanny’s parents hope the shrine will cure their son of his seemingly severe learning difficulties and muteness. They are holed up in an old house that, twice a day, is engulfed by a murderous tide while a mystery hangs over the group following the death of last year’s priest. Murkier yet are a couple staying at a house across the bay with a – possibly underage – heavily pregnant girl in a wheelchair.

The official book synopsis is below.  We’ll have more on this project as we learn it!

Book Synopsis:
When the remains of a young child are discovered during a winter storm on a stretch of the bleak Lancashire coastline known as the Loney, a man named Smith is forced to confront the terrifying and mysterious events that occurred forty years earlier when he visited the place as a boy. At that time, his devoutly Catholic mother was determined to find healing for Hanny, his disabled older brother. And so the family, along with members of their parish, embarked on an Easter pilgrimage to an ancient shrine.

But not all of the locals were pleased to see visitors in the area. And when the two brothers found their lives entangling with a glamorous couple staying at a nearby house, they became involved in more troubling rites. Smith feels he is the only one to know the truth, and he must bear the burden of his knowledge, no matter what the cost.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is set to continue at some point this year with Leatherface, a prequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic – which also makes it a prequel to Texas Chainsaw 3D. French filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury directed the latest installment in the long-running series, and today brings your first look.

Below you’ll find an image of Stephen Dorff as Texas Ranger Hal Hartman, alongside co-star Finn Jones. It was recently posted over on Instagram by Christa Campbell, one of the film’s producers.

Vanessa Grasse stars as Lizzy, a young nurse at a mental hospital who’s kidnapped by a group of violent teenagers and taken on a road trip from hell. Lili Taylor portrays Verna Sawyer; Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, and James Bloor star as the potential Leatherfaces; and Stephen Dorff stars as a lean, mean Texas Ranger who has a vendetta against the teen boy who grows up to become Leatherface.

The cast also includes Nicole Andrews, Julian Kostov, Jessica Madsen, and Lorina Kamburova.

Leatherface was written by up-and-coming genre scribe Seth M. Sherwood.

Millennium Films, which was behind the 2013 Texas Chainsaw 3D, is once again producing with Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, and Carl Mazzacone for Lionsgate.

Synopsis:
In this prequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a young nurse is kidnapped by a group of violent teens who escape from a mental hospital and take her on a road trip from hell. Pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge, one of these teens is destined for tragedy and horrors that will destroy his mind, molding him into the monster we now call Leatherface.

Plan 9 from Outer Space Remake Landing in February

Long before films like Troll 2 and The Room came along, Ed Wood mastered the art of charmingly bad cinema, and 1959’s Plan 9 from Outer Space is unquestionably his most well-known creation. For some reason, it has been remade, and now we know when to expect it.

Per Gravitas Ventures, Plan 9 will hit VOD on February 16th, followed by a physical media release around 90 days later. While we wait, check out the trailer and poster art!

The film stars Brian Krause (“Charmed,” Sleepwalkers), James Rolfe (The Angry Video Game Nerd), and Matthew Ewald (Fox’s “Galidor”) plus horror actors such as Camille Keaton (I Spit on Your Grave), Addy Miller (“The Walking Dead”), and Michael Christopher (Dawn of the Dead).

Synopsis:
Plan 9 is the story of Nilbog, a small town with a big story: the beginning of an invasion! However, instead of lasers, spaceships, and epic force, these aliens have a different plan for the inhabitants of Earth: to resurrect the dead as their own army set with but one goal… to wipe out all mankind! On this Halloween night only the townsfolk stand in the way of total domination. From the police department to those trapped in a convenience store, and even those trying to stay alive in the streets, this night will decide the fates of all who walk the planet and thought they were the top of the food chain.

Supernatural Dolls Treated Like Humans in Thailand

In the most “what the fuckin’ fuck?” story of the day, it turns out that the premise of last weekend’s The Boy isn’t as far-fetched as we may have thought. At least in Thailand.

MSN reports that a Thai airline will allow passengers to purchase seats for life-like dolls that their owners treat as real children due to their belief that they possess supernatural powers.

Thai Smile Airways, which is a part of national carrier Thai Airways International, said in an internal memo that dolls with tickets will be served snacks and drinks, though they will be barred from sitting in exit rows. Owners who take dolls on the plane without tickets will have them treated as carry-on luggage.

The dolls known as Luk Thep, or Child Angels, have become increasingly popular in Thailand after several celebrities extolled their benefits. The dolls, which can sell for hundreds of dollars, are thought to possess the spirits of child angels; and their owners pamper them with brand-name clothes and accessories due to the belief that a well-cared-for doll will bring good fortune.

Luk Thep

The memo from Thai Smile explains to staff that the Luk Thep dolls can be treated like children because they have undergone a “spiritualisation” process that breathes life into them. In addition to being barred from exit rows, the dolls must also buckle up during take off and landing.

A Bangkok buffet restaurant is also running a special for the dolls.

In the past month, more than 30 customers have brought their Luk Thep to eat at Neta Grill,” the restaurant said on its Facebook page Sunday. “Neta Grill is open to all worshipers, and we’re glad to serve Luk Thep at children’s prices on the condition that all of the food ordered is consumed.

Yep, there’s a Syfy channel movie in there somewhere.

Goosebumps (Blu-ray)

goosebumpsbluStarring Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Ryan Lee

Directed by Rob Letterman

Adapting R.L. Stine’s iconic Goosebumps books into a feature film was no doubt a daunting task, which probably explains why it took so long for it to actually happen. The books, which began hitting shelves in 1992, were of course turned into a TV series back in the mid ’90s, with each episode bringing to life a different Stine story. But a movie is an entirely different beast. Do you adapt one story at a time, like the TV show, or do you cover several at once, in the form of an anthology?

Quite brilliantly, last year’s long-awaited Goosebumps feature film went in a wholly unexpected direction, as the clever concept was devised to go meta with the adaptation and literally unleash all of the iconic monsters from the beloved book franchise. In the film, Jack Black stars as R.L. Stine himself, and when his locked Goosebumps manuscripts are accidentally opened up by young friends Zach and Champ, all of his most evil creations – led by Slappy the dummy – are set free.

I’m here mostly to talk about the Blu-ray disc’s special features – Uncle Creepy’s five-star review of the film reads much like my own, so that base has already been covered – but allow me to briefly heap some additional praise on top of his.

Like many twenty-somethings with fond childhood memories of reading the books, I had been waiting seemingly my whole life for a Goosebumps movie, and the movie I saw in theaters last October was every bit the one I had been craving for so many years. Watching those books literally explode onto the big screen was such a treat that I went back to my local theater two more times throughout the month, and when it came time to pick my five favorite movies of 2015 here on Dread Central, the nostalgia-inducing bliss of Goosebumps was still at the forefront of my mind.

Watching Goosebumps, to cut right to the point, made me feel like a kid again, playing out like a massively entertaining love letter to the franchise that I still hold so near and dear to my heart. Charming, genuinely funny, and loaded with nearly every monster that I first met while lying on the floor of my childhood bedroom, the film is as pitch perfect an adaptation as any fan could possibly hope for, and if I could change anything about it, I’m honestly not sure I would. Okay, so I’d probably give the Haunted Mask more screen-time, but I’m aware that’s a minor gripe.

Goosebumps is essentially a modern day version of The Monster Squad, and it’s precisely the sort of family-friendly horror film that just doesn’t get made anymore. If you missed it in theaters, and your inner child is aching to go on a monster-filled thrill ride – whether you read all the books or never so much as browsed a single one – I cannot possibly recommend this movie highly enough.

It’s exactly, to a tee, what it should have been.

The Blu-ray disc contains a handful of exclusive special features that cannot be found on the DVD, including approximately 16-minutes of Deleted Scenes – several of which center on Zach having trouble acclimating to his new town/school. None of them really add anything to the film, so it’s easy to see why they were deleted. There’s an Alternate Opening that shows two movers transporting Stine’s belongings and having a run-in with Slappy, which is pretty cool but probably for the best that it was excised, as well as an Alternate Ending that was wisely left on the cutting room floor. In it, Hannah doesn’t end up coming back, and Zach instead meets a new potential love interest – who he initially thinks Stine has also created. It made me sad. Really sad.

Running just over 3-minutes, the Cast Blooper Reel is your usual dose of silliness, while a 7-minute Casting Gallery shows off a handful of screen tests featuring the four main actors. The 9-minute Creaturefied! is a fun little featurette hosted by the film’s makeup effects artists that shows kids how to create horror movie effects with ordinary household items, and the Blu-ray exclusives are rounded off with All About Slappy, a 4-minute mini-doc, hosted by Slappy, that provides a behind the scenes look at the dummy’s creation – including a peek at the original concept design.

Found on both the DVD and Blu-ray are Beginner’s Guide to Surviving a Goosebumps Creature, a 6-minute feature hosted by Dylan Minnette and Ryan Lee (in character) that utilizes clips from the film to show you how to defeat some of the monsters in it, and the 3-minute Strange Things are Happening… On-Set, a useless addition about the set being haunted – which is just a silly gag.

I suppose it makes sense that the special feature are mostly kid-oriented, this being Goosebumps and all, but I personally found myself unsatisfied by the bonus content on the Blu-ray. There’s nothing in the form of traditional “Making Of” stuff on here, so the disc provides no real insight into the film’s creation, and the package is sorely missing a single commentary track – one from Stine could’ve been really interesting. I was also hoping for a feature that highlighted the film’s incredible makeup effects, which is nowhere to be found. Sigh.

The features may leave much to be desired but the movie is awesome and the Blu-ray slipcover features raised font, just like the original books, so it’s nevertheless a must-own for all Goosebumps fiends. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to spend the rest of the night gently caressing the bumpy font. It’s glorious. Oh so glorious.

Nick Antosca Talks Awesome Friday the 13th Reboot That Almost Was

The original plan for the next Friday the 13th film was that Paramount was going to go the found footage route, but those plans changed when writer Nick Antosca (“Hannibal”) was brought on board. Antosca and director David Bruckner devised a different idea, and though both are unfortunately off the project, this week we’ve learned a bit more about the reboot that almost was.

Speaking with Necronomicast, Antosca provided a bit more insight into the ’80s-set Friday the 13th film he and Bruckner were at one point working on, revealing that it was essentially going to be a big ole love letter to the original franchise.

I worked really closely with [David Bruckner],” Antosca said of the collaboration that almost resulted in what sounds like a truly awesome movie. “His idea from the first meeting was he wanted [Friday the 13th] to really have likable, real characters and to be set in the ’80s – Jason shows up and shreds everybody.”

Related Story: David Bruckner Opens Up About His Friday the 13th Reboot

And that’s what we did,” Antosca continued. “That was the plan, and we had a great time. I went back and watched the Paramount ones, multiple times, because that was the spirit we wanted – starting with the ’80s Paramount logo and all that. [It was] an incredibly fun and rewarding creative experience. A while later I heard they decided not to do it in the ’80s. I’m bummed they didn’t do the draft, [but] I’m more bummed that David is not on the project [anymore].”

We’re less than a month away from the mid-season return of “The Walking Dead,” which takes a bite out of AMC on February 14th. The second half of Season 6 will mark the arrival of villain Negan, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been cast in the role. What does he think of the character?

In an interview on “Late Night with Seth Myers,” which you can watch below, the actor made no bones about the fact that Negan isn’t a good guy, though he noted that he’s having a whole lot of fun tapping into his evil side.

He’s a game-changer,” said Dean Morgan. “It’s a complete 180 from what I’m doing on ‘The Good Wife,’ which for an actor is a dream come true. I get to be the biggest ass in the world; it’s awesome.”

Should spice up the show in a big way, to say the least!

Synopsis:
A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in this reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry, and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Riley) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield in order to conquer the undead once and for all.
