From the Press Release:
THE CURSE
Life on the family dairy farm is difficult for young Zach Hayes (Wil Wheaton, Stand by Me): hard work, long hours, and the normal family squabbles. But after an ice-blue meteor plunges through the midnight sky and lands on their property, it gets worse. Zach and the local doctor discover that something inside the meteor is infecting the local water on their farm. Fruits, which look perfect on the outside, are teeming with worms… and Zach’s family is beginning to change… hideously! This shocker is directed by actor David Keith (Firestarter, White of the Eye) and co-stars Claude Akins (Tentacles), Malcolm Danare (Christine), Cooper Huckabee (The Funhouse), and John Schneider (“Smallville”). The original theatrical trailer is included as a bonus feature.

CURSE II: THE BITE
Two young lovers, Clark (J. Eddie Peck, “Kyle XY”) and Lisa (Jill Schoelen, The Stepfather), traveling through the desert unwittingly pass through an abandoned nuclear test site which has become a breeding ground for deadly mutant killer snakes. When Clark is bitten, he undergoes a grotesque transformation into a hideous snake monster! This chiller filled with slithering horror also stars Jamie Farr (“M*A*S*H”), Shiri Appleby (“Roswell”), and Bo Svenson (Walking Tall Part II).

What’s more American than an Internet legend brought to life? That’s exactly what we may be getting in the next season of “American Horror Story.” Us Weekly is reporting that the FX drama’s sixth season will likely focus on Slender Man, a black-suited character (created as an internet meme in 2009) who stalks children, a source reveals.

Someone else wrote the script, and ‘AHS’ wants to adapt it to fit the show,” says the insider. “They have to buy the rights. Then they’re going to figure out the cast from there.

SLENDER MAN

FX head John Landgraf previously said S6 will be “set in the present” with “echoes of the past” mixed in. “It’s set in two time periods,” he added, “but principally in the present.

We’ll keep you posted as more “AHS” details hits the Internet and our inboxes.

For more info in the meantime, visit the “American Horror Story” Facebook page, and follow @AHSFX on Twitter along with “American Horror Story” on FX.

The Id Takes Over in This First Look

The first time I had the pleasure of working with Thommy Hutson and Dan Farrands was on Never Sleep Again, and I knew from the get-go that those dudes were gonna take the horror genre to some pretty freaky places. Word of their latest endeavor, The Id, has hit the Interwebs; and we have your first look!

The Id will be playing at the upcoming The Hollywood Reel Independent Film Fest so if you’re in town, we suggest you attend. The event takes place on Thursday, February 18th, at 9:15pm at Regal LA LIVE Stadium 14 Cineplex, 1000 West Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90015.

Directed by Hutson and produced by Hutson and Farrands (The Haunting in Connecticut, Amityville: The Awakening), the film stars Amanda Wyss of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Better Off Dead and Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Patrick Peduto.

I loved the challenge of bringing Meridith’s heartbreaking story to life because the whole process was a thrilling roller coaster of emotion and tension,” Amanda Wyss explained. “It was also a dream to work with Thommy on his directorial debut. The experience created a special bond between us that really made it possible to make this movie. It was incredible to tackle such a demanding role and be surrounded by a cast and crew who were so protective and giving. I am really proud of the film.

Hutson added: “I was thrilled to be making my directorial debut with a project that has so many layers and interesting characters. I’m also very lucky that Amanda took the leap to play Meridith, a woman whose emotions run the gamut. She brought so much to the role and worked perfectly against Patrick [Peduto], who played her father. It’s really exciting to know people will be watching this story unfold and taking a journey with these characters. Every one of the cast and crew pulled together and worked so hard, on such a tight budget and schedule, to make it all happen.

Synopsis:
Meridith Lane is truly her father’s daughter. Doting, attentive, obedient. But after years spent confined together in a claustrophobic house, middle-aged Meridith’s relationship to her increasingly cruel and sadistic elderly father is veering toward disaster. When a figure from her past suddenly re-enters her life, Meridith is confronted with the harsh reality of her father’s monstrous nature.

Deciding she must set herself free from his dominion, Meridith descends into a terrifying world of horrific visions, after one impulsive and irreversible act plunges her into a waking nightmare of her own making. And she is about to find out that, no matter what, the most important man in a girl’s life… is her father.

Convergence Begins With This Trailer

A few days ago we brought you the first word on Dark Sky Films’ latest project, Convergence, and today we have the trailer for you cats cold off the slab. Look for the flick in select theaters on February 5th, followed by digital download, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 9th.  Read on for the details!

Convergence Release Details:
A detective on the trail of a terrorist finds himself in a supernaturally charged trap where all the rules of police work go out the window in director Drew Hall’s eerily atmospheric and provocative CONVERGENCE.

Detective Ben Walls (Clayne Crawford; “Rectify,” A Walk to Remember) lives a quiet life with his wife and newborn daughter. But he’s called into action after an explosion at a local women’s health clinic – an explosion that may be the work of a terrorist bomber Ben has been tracking. While investigating the scene, another shocking event lands Ben himself in the hospital. When he awakens, he is surprisingly uninjured and ready to go back into the field. But at the behest of his captain (Mykelti Williamson; Forrest Gump, Con Air) and the hospital’s few but eerily incongruous patients and staff, Ben is forced to remain inside the building.

As Ben navigates the hospital’s alarmingly empty hallways, he soon finds himself hunted by a self-proclaimed avenging angel (Ethan Embry; Eagle Eye, Vacancy), who may be the terrorist he has been looking for, and haunted by apparitions whose deadly motives remain a mystery. As Ben’s sense of reality begins to spiral out of control and the demons that surround him close in, he must find a way to both stop the supernatural forces that want him dead and catch the bomber before he strikes again.

A modern-day myth about redemption that’s equal parts crime thriller, supernatural horror, and action spectacle, CONVERGENCE will keep you guessing at every turn of its twisting plot right up until the last shocking frame.

Also starring in this gripping and unsettling film are Chelsea Bruland (Left Behind), Gary Grubbs (JFK), Laura Cayouette (Django Unchained), and Catalina Soto-Aguilar (“Sons of Liberty”).

Monsters. You love them. We love them. The world loves them. It goes without saying that these bombastic beasts go hand-in-hand with comic books, and the lovable loonies over at Source Point Press need your help to bring the world something Monstrous!

Monstrous #1

Monstrous #4

From the Press Release:
Source Point Press has announced a brand new monthly four-issue comic book mini-series, Monstrous, with the first issue hitting stores and Comixology February 17th. A 30-day Kickstarter campaign was launched January 1st by Editor-in-Chief Travis McIntire to allow readers the chance to pre-order all four of the issues.

MONSTERS, ROBOTS, AND IGOR WITH A SHOTGUN! “Inspired noir wackiness!” – Michael Kupperman, Tales Designed to Thrizzle

You’ve heard the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster before. You know they tried to kill each other. But it didn’t work. Now, Frankenstein has built robots, his monster has built more monsters, and the world will never be the same. Monstrous tells the tales of everyday monsters, robots, and townspeople caught up in the changes sweeping across Europe in the wake of Dr. Frankenstein’s mad science. But even in this twisted landscape, our unconventional heroes—giant rabbit monsters, steam-powered cyborgs, and babysitting bank robbers—all try to live by their own code of honor. So fire up your steampunk rocket-sled and jump on board!

A ONE-OF-A-KIND CREATION (ASSEMBLED IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT!)

Monstrous is the freak show brainchild of writer Greg Wright (Wild Bullets, Last Monster Standing) and artist Ken Lamug (The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories, A Box Story). “It’s not like any other comic available today. It takes classic monster characters—like Dr. Frankenstein, Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and Igor—and gives them a fresh jolt of electricity. This world features steam-powered robots, voodoo magic, and more blaster fights than you can shake a lightning rod at. Plus, whatever your tastes, there is something in these books to get excited about: jokes, adventures, chills, mysteries, and more!” says Wright.

“Monstrous is what you get when you mix a genuine love for monsters and myth with the unsettling excitement of a fever dream. Greg Wright and Ken Lamug have built a mad and macabre world here, brick by twisted brick, leaving nothing outside the realm of possibility. It’s inventive and fun, as much as it is peculiar in the best way.” – Ryan Ferrier, D4VE and Curb Stomp

MONSTROUS: 100% SPOOKY GOODNESS!

The art is gorgeous. The characters are wild. And the lightning-paced stories deliver chills and laughs for monster lovers from age 9 to 999. Treat yourself to Monstrous today by backing the Kickstarter campaign here.

Official release dates for both stores and digital avenues such as Comixology and Drivethru Comics are as follows:

  • #1 releases Wednesday, February 17th

With the unexpected, seemingly unnecessary remake of Cabin Fever headed our way on February 12th, we knew it wouldn’t be long before a trailer arrived. The wait, if you were indeed waiting, is over. The new film was directed by Travis Zariwny, and the trailer… well, it’s pretty familiar.

Synopsis:
Executive producer Eli Roth presents this reboot of his instant classic gorefest, which features all new characters and all new kills. What’s surprising are the ingenious new deaths, which offer a fresh spin on a horror-comedy milestone.

Blood Lad (Anime Series)

$

Directed by Shigeyuki MiyaBlood Lad

Animated by Brain’s Base

Suitable for 13+

In a world saturated with vampire stories, it can be difficult to find a new take that no one has used to death already (no pun intended). We’ve seen the brooding, angsty, hopelessly romantic vampire. There’s been the frightening and monstrous vampires constantly seeking fresh blood. Yes, even sparkly vampires. Despite all the odds, Blood Lad manages to bring us a new kind of vampire. And thankfully no, they don’t sparkle.

Blood Lad takes place in a supernatural world where creatures like vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and shapeshifters exist. Main character Staz is a vampire boss in charge of a section of the demon world. His surly personality and intimidating looks hide a hilarious secret. Staz could care less about drinking human blood, since he is too busy being obsessed with Japanese culture. Yup, vampire boss Staz is an otaku.

Enter second main character Yanagi Fuyumi, a Japanese teenage girl who accidentally wanders into the demon world. At the mention of a human girl in his territory, Staz sends his goons off to collect her. He has but a moment with Fuyumi before he has to leave her to fight off an intruder. After, Staz finds out that during his fight Fuyumi was left to her own devices, and subsequently eaten by one of the intruding monsters… Oops. But hey, not all hope is lost! Fuyumi is actually now a ghost! Staz stashes the skeletal remains of Fuyumi’s human body and vows to find a way to resurrect her. Thus begins the rest of Blood Lad.

Blood Lad’s ten episodes manage to squash in a bunch of differing subplots, as well as a wide gamut of characters. In some anime this can feel crowded, leaving us feeling like we didn’t get to know certain characters well enough. This is not the case with Blood Lad however. This illustrates the miracles of setting a quirky tone from the beginning of a series. We know that this is a show about devilish creatures, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, oh my! But we also know from the very start that none of this will be treated very seriously. Need I remind you that Staz is an otaku vampire that likes Fuyumi only because she is Japanese. All of the subplots and characters might not make sense together normally, but in a silly series like Blood Lad, they somehow work.

Take for example the story arc where Staz finds himself in a prison run by his younger sister. You certainly read that right, his younger sister, and that’s not even the strange part! In said prison, Staz pushes a button on the wall which allows him into an area with a pleasant looking field of green grass. It doesn’t look pleasant for long though, because a set of blonde-haired mask-wearing twin brothers accost Staz and beat him half to death. At one point the brothers get split in half by Staz, but they keep fighting! Turns out the brothers are zombies. Of course they are. This is par for the course with Blood Lad. Just like the fact that his younger sister is strong enough to single-handedly control her own prison.

Blood Lad is animated by Brain’s Base, the same studio that brought us greats like Durarara!!, Baccano!, and Natsume Yuujinchou. It’s clear to see that this is a studio that knows what it’s doing, and does it very well. Blood Lad’s animations are crisp, brightly colored, and full of character variety. Just like in Natsume Yuujinchou, Brain’s Base manages to illustrate even crowd scenes without stooping to copy/paste style crowd animations. Each character has their own personality quirks, and it’s great to see. On the subject of personalities, the voices for the characters in Blood Lad match them perfectly. It’s incredibly fun to hear Staz’s semi-monotone, refuses-to-be-excited voice next to Fuyumi’s stereotypical bubbly teenage girl tone.

The most stand-out detriment to the series is the ending, and even that could hardly be considered a negative. Blood Lad has a sort of non-ending, with Fuyumi still stuck as a ghost, and Staz still vowing to revive her. It’s very possible that there will be a second season of Blood Lad since the original manga is still being published.

While Blood Lad is an entertaining series with a charming cast, it’s not exactly the most memorable anime you’ll ever watch. A second season could definitely change this fact. But for now, if you’re looking for a quick, quirky little series to watch for fun, this has totally got your name written all over it.

Lazer Team (2016)

Staring Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, Michael Jones, and Colton Dunn

Man, Rooster Teeth, you’ve come a long way from Blood Gulch. I can’t say I’ve followed you over the years, much to the disappointment of 14-year-old me. Sitting around the family computer, surrounded by friends, oh, how we laughed at the comical misadventures of the Red and Blue teams. Hell, I used the line “This doesn’t seem physically possible!” long after it grew stale and still refer to dating as “buying the cow.”

Caboose, Church, Sarge, Simmons, etc., had an impact on the formation of my funny bone bordering on parental negligence. Time took its toll, and as I matured, the idea of machinima soured. There was a huge burst of video game “parody” series in the early-mid 2000’s, and the entire idea of using video game characters to tell a wacky and zany story just felt trite (though retrospectively it was preferable to the modern wave of “react shocked and scream loudly when things jump out” style of video game “content”). Rooster Teeth never fell into the abyss of shit, high on its own success, but something in me made it impossible to follow the series any longer.

It seems that in the time that I have grown, so have they. Red Vs Blue has evolved into a sci-fi drama, and their live action content is surprisingly well done. My friends that like anime have even told me that RWBY is pretty good. They bought out ScrewAttack, which for a long time was my primary source of gaming news, so that’s pretty big. Like any content creator, not everything is a 10/10 hit, but they’ve been consistently putting out creative, original content for the last 12 years. In a market saturated with rip-offs and repeats, it’s an achievement.

The reason for this nostalgia trip/excessive elaboration is that Lazer Team is more than just Rooster Teeth’s first major motion picture. As a small company that started with a few friends making jokes about Halo, it is already a monumental achievement that they have made it this far. It’s a feather in their cap, a milestone on their long road to success that every internet hopeful one day dreams of traveling themselves. However, this isn’t just their story. This is also the story of YouTube Red.

With Lazer Team, YouTube Red is trying to throw their hat in the original content ring. Squaring off against against titans like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, Red hopes to add another $9.99 onto your month subscription budget. It’s a bold and perplexing move for a company whose business model has always been “free shit instantly,” and so far most of their programming aims to further capitalize off of their most popular stars. Most of their planned content is just “YouTube star does thing.” While I’m sure that adolescent girls are just dying to see how Lilly “Superwoman” Singh jump cutted and girl-powered her way into stardom, it’s not clear if anyone will buy it. Pre-teens fucking love watching PewDiePie pretend to be scared in a funny accent, but whether their parents will fork over ten bucks a month so they can watch him flail like an invalid in real world scenarios has yet to be seen.

Enter Lazer Team, one of Red’s flagship titles. Though a veritable who’s who of YouTube talent, it’s also a real movie. This isn’t built on the premise of watching your favorite YouTube star do stupid shit. Whereas YouTube personalities survive off of their fanbase returning week after week to absorb their content, a standalone feature has to draw in new and unfamiliar markets. It has to compel you to watch it beyond brand recognition to put asses in seats. If YouTube Red is going to make it as an original content creator and not just a subscription service for premium reaction to jump scares, Lazer Team is their best—and as of now only—shot at showing the world they can do it.

It’s quite a lot of pressure to put on a comedy made by a group of friends about shooting aliens with lasers. I don’t know if Lazer Team will ever escape the weight of its monumental burden. As a critic, I’m supposed to kind of ignore all of this background noise and just focus on the movie, which I shall in the next paragraph. As a fan and patron of the internet, it’s a fascinating linchpin moment for the future of the industry.

Which is why I’m proud to announce that Lazer Team was good. Given the budget, it was actually great. Given the history as a YouTube spawn project, it was incredible. As a feature length film I watched for the purposes of review, it was just good. There were a lot of weak spots, but it comes together well enough that by the end, I was rooting for the good guys, booing the bad guys, and laughing when I was supposed to. Good job, Rooster Teeth.

The biggest shortcoming of the film is the disparity in acting talent. Each of the four main characters have Rooster Teeth backgrounds, but not all command the screen with equal finesse. Herman (Colton Dunn) and Woody (Gavin Free) have both great screen presence and comedic timing, with Dunn in particular managing to sell me on some actual emotional depth during one of the film’s more dramatic revelations. Both actors could carry a scene. Add in Zach (Michael Jones), and you have a cast that plays off of each other naturally, delivering solid gags and memorable lines in a manner that matches even landmark comedies like The Hangover.

Then comes in Hagan (Burnie Burns), who has about three and a half Hayden Christensens worth of acting talent. This still puts him well below the six Hayden Christensens talent metric legally required to consider an actor good. At three and a half, he’s only a Christensen and a half above Rob Schneider, and a full two Christensens below Nicolas Cage in one of his off movies. It really bums me out to ride Burns so hard, since he founded Rooster Teeth and pioneered web video game comedy, but he is best left in the writer’s room. He stretched jokes to the point of ruination, and lacked the timing or tone to pull off the quicker gags. His “loser everyman hero” characterization felt forced, and the scant few times I did laugh were at his expense. He’s an incredibly talented creator, entrepreneur, and individual, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for him, but he was outclassed in every scene.

The plot is initially pretty cookie-cutter: aliens threaten to invade earth, only one man and his super suit can stop it, said super suit gets plot-deviced onto our heroes, heroes must work together to save the day. Each of them gets a piece that both compliments their personality and magnifies a weakness, requiring personal growth to master. Herman gets super boots, but his lifetime of physical neglect makes him puke whenever he tries to use them. Woody gets a super intelligence helmet, but his natural idiocy keeps making the wrong decisions with incredible accuracy. Zach is the high school quarterback, whose now literal cannon arm reflects his metaphorical cannon arm, and he must learn control to master it. Hagan has a shield arm, which gives him the courage to defend his loved ones and deflect all that shit I threw at him in the previous paragraph. Together, they must combine their individual pieces to overcome a far greater foe. Think The Lost Vikings mixed with The Wizard of Oz with aliens and space lasers.

Reflective of their YouTube origins, the movie is at its best when quippy. The titular “Lazer Team” is named so when Zach posts a selfie on Facebook, making a jab at the common misspelling of “laser” and Facebook grammar in one go. Ha! Clever! I like that. I like it when they make fun of people’s spelling. When Woody starts talking in a British accent because that’s how dumb people think smart people sound, that was also funny. Good going guys! When Zach gets tazed for like, 45 seconds, that felt tired, but was fine. When Hagans yet again has a bad thing happen to him and no one respects him, I wasn’t laughing. The extended gags just didn’t work because they weren’t believable.

There’s also a good deal of physical comedy that crosses the borderline into juvenile and doesn’t look back until it hits arm farts on the playground. I’m not knocking nut shots, but there’s only so many times a dude can get hit in the balls, accidentally see balls, and have balls thrust in his face before I get bored. It all led up to a pretty epic alien nutshot though, so I’m inclined to give it a pass. Furthermore, the scene where they all put the suit on was just genius. They also used tasers just the right amount, which is an artform many have yet to master.

There’s some social commentary in here too, but it never dominates the movie or feels like a “message.” I read some other reviews that said that it was a lampoon of our modern technological age combined and the incompetence of the military, but saying that this movie was making some kind of statement is reading way too far into it. The self-awareness to make fun of trending and social media coverage was both smart and fun given the history, though it did come off as a bit smug at times. As for the incompetent military, it was more just its own comedic character, and served as a framework for a great supporting cast. Characters like Officer Vandenbloom and the medical staff ratchet the movie up another notch.

There are plenty of moments during Lazer Team where I wasn’t laughing, thinking, “My 12-year-old self would really like this.” After about thirty minutes of halfhearted chuckles, the movie got into its groove, and stayed there until the credits rolled. I never found myself cracking up, but I really cared about this motley band of misfits by the end. It kept a good pace of laughs throughout, with only a few low points that really rubbed me wrong. It’s a movie I’d be happy to watch again, which is something I almost never say. It’s a movie that despite all its flaws still managed to hook me in.

Your personal enjoyment is going to weigh heavily on how much you resonate with the humor. What it isn’t going to rely on in is how well you know the cast. It’s exactly what a real motion picture should rely on. It’ll be interesting to see in the coming years where YouTube Red goes, but if Lazer Team team is our benchmark, things are looking good.

Pilot Season: The CW Orders Riverdale, Transylvania, Frequency & Kevin Williamson Supernatural Drama

It’s pilot season for the TV networks, and while we’re planning to keep our coverage to a minimum until some of the potential shows actually get picked up and put on the schedule, a few hit our radar tonight that we wanted to make you aware of, including one that we’ve been talking about for a while now.

First, for all you Archie fans (and there must be a lot of you since “America’s Favorite Teenager” is celebrating his 75th birthday this year), The CW has officially picked up the pilot episode for the live-action “Riverdale” TV series, to start filming this spring.

The one-hour drama will be written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and produced by Warner Brothers Studios and Berlanti Productions.  It’s described as “a subversive take on the classic Archie mythos.” Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, Jon Goldwater, and Aguirre-Sacasa serve as executive producers.

The live-action series offers a bold, subversive (that word again!) take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones. Popular gay character Kevin Keller will also play a pivotal role. In addition to the core cast, “Riverdale” will introduce other characters from Archie Comics’ expansive library, including Josie and the Pussycats.

We learned from Deadline that also in the works at the network is the 1880-set “Transylvania,” which is executive produced by Midnight Radio, the team of Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, and Scott Rosenberg through CBS Studios.

Written/executive produced by Hugh Sterbakov (Hell and Back), “Transylvania” centers on a headstrong young woman in search of her missing father who ventures from NYC to Transylvania, where she teams up with a wrongfully disgraced Scotland Yard Detective, and together they witness the births of the most famous monsters and villains in history.

Per usual, Kevin Williamson has a few new series in the works–The CW is eyeing a supernatural drama that he wrote and David Nutter (“Game of Thrones,” “The X-Files,” Disturbing Behavior) will direct. The two are executive producing the pilot, about a young woman who seeks help from a parapsychologist when she begins to experience paranormal phenomena. Lauren Wagner is a producer. The untitled project hails from Warner Bros. TV and Williamson’s Outerbanks Entertainment.  (On the sci-fi side of the fence, Williamson also has time-travel drama “Time After Time” in development at ABC.)

Speaking of sci-fi, remember that Dennis Quaid/Jim Caviezel film Frequency from back in 2000?  The CW is working on a reimagining of that with WBTV and Lin Pictures. In their version, a female police detective in 2016 discovers she is able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father (also a detective) who died in 1996. They forge a new relationship while working together on an unresolved murder case, but unintended consequences of the “butterfly effect” wreak havoc in the present day. The project, originally developed at NBC last season, was written by “Supernatural” showrunner Jeremy Carver, who executive produces with Toby Emmerich (who wrote the film), John Rickard, and Lin Pictures’ Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz.

And if you’ve always been intrigued by the 400-year-old Roanoke Colony mystery, it’s getting a galactic twist with a still untitled “Mars project,” from CBS TV Studios and the Kennedy/Marshall Co. Written by Doris Egan (“Reign”), it’s a thriller about a team of explorers who arrive on Mars to join the first human colony on the planet, only to discover that their predecessors have vanished. Led by a woman whose husband is among the missing, the colonists are forced to change their mission from exploration and settlement to investigation and survival, while navigating the hostile planet and their own personal demons. The project is inspired by the story of “The Lost Colony,” the 16th century British settlement on Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina, whose inhabitants vanished without a trace, sparking a slew of theories about their fate. Egan executive produces with Kennedy/Marshall’s Robert Zotnowski and Frank Marshall for CBS Studios.

Watch Now: Demonic Short The Morning Star Preserves Company

After viewing the trailer below, I think the first thing you’ll say is, “WTF did I just watch?” It’s a standalone proof of concept trailer for The Morning Star Preserves Company (official website) so it works as both a trailer and a mini-film in its own right.

If you ever wondered about the process by which our souls are judged, then look no further.

It comes from filmmaker Kev Harte via his company Abandonhope Films, which specializes in producing top-quality horror movies.

Synopsis:
THE MORNING STAR PRESERVES COMPANY is a short horror/fantasy film revolving around the daily activities of what on the outside appears to be a normal factory. The company is actually revealed to be the realm of Hell, and it is here we will discover that human souls are chosen daily to be gathered and given to Lucifer to satiate his desire to take over the Earth, a rule set out as per “The Heaven Agreement.” Contained in jam jars picked out by a member of staff each day are tarot type cards representing the Lords of Hell. A demon is assigned through these cards and sent out into the human world to bring back souls who must perish at the demons’ hands so they can take them back to the factory for “processing.”

With a visual style reminiscent of Guillermo del Toro’s work via Sam Raimi with a touch of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, this will be Abandonhope Film’s most ambitious project to date.

Beware! The Blob on Blu-ray Soon!

When I wrote just over a week ago about the inexplicable Blu-ray release of The Bees, I speculated that 2016 might be the start of a golden age of schlocky cult classics getting hi-def releases. Further confirming my speculation, Kino Lorber has announced plans to bring the psychedelic horror comedy sequel Beware! The Blob to Blu-ray later this year.

For the uninitiated, imagine a sequel to The Blob made by people high on mushrooms blasting acid rock, wanting to make a serious horror film but so stoned they couldn’t stop cracking dumb jokes. Keep in mind the original title of the movie was Son of Blob.

Released in 1972, Beware! The Blob‘s greatest claim to b-movie fame might be its director: Larry Hagman, the late actor best known for playing scheming oil tycoon J.R. Ewing on TV’s “Dallas,” at that time best known as the leading man in the classic sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie.” Hagman co-stars with Robert Walker, Jr., Gwynne Gilford, Richard Stahl, Shelley Berman, Gerrit Graham, and Carol Lynley.

Synopsis:
A technician brings a frozen specimen of the original Blob back from the North Pole. When his wife accidentally defrosts the thing, it terrorizes the populace, including the local hippies, kittens, and bowlers.

No release date for the Blu-ray just yet, nor any extras at this time. I strongly suspect this will be a bare bones release, with possible exception of the film’s quite entertaining trailer, which you can watch below.
