Director Benjamin Cooper Takes a Job as Edgar Allan Poe’s Lighthouse Keeper

Writer/director Benjamin Cooper, probably best known for his 2011 horror flick Primitive, is entering the spooky world of Edgar Allan Poe with his upcoming endeavor Lighthouse Keeper. Based on the acclaimed author’s unfinished short story “The Light-House,” the tale follows a guy who is instructed to always keep a light burning in the lighthouse he’s tasked with overseeing. Of course, it doesn’t help matters that the surrounding area contains a wide variety of spooks and specters.

The official synopsis does a much better job of setting the mood:

A young man awakens alone on a remote beach, marooned there by a violent storm. Above the rocky crags, a lighthouse stands like a sentinel. Injured and suffering from amnesia, the man seeks the help of Walsh, the enigmatic lighthouse keeper. Walsh tells him they are stranded until the ferry arrives in two weeks, and insists they are the sole inhabitants of the peninsula. But the man is haunted by fleeting glimpses of a beautiful young woman, and plagued by visions of hideous phantoms reaching out from the depths. As this horror tale races towards a mind-bending finale, the man must confront the grotesque denizens of the night, or heed the lighthouse keeper’s cryptic warning to “Always keep a light burning!”

Perhaps the coolest thing about Edgar Allan Poe’s Lighthouse Keeper is the inclusion of veteran character actor Vernon Wells, who tackles the role of Walsh. A lot of people probably know him best from Commando and The Road Warrior, but he’ll always be Plughead from Circuitry Man to me.

There isn’t a lot of information about the project making the rounds online at the moment, but the official website has a ton of cool behind-the-scenes photos, which should give you an idea of what the filmmakers are hoping to accomplish with the flick. In the meantime, we do have some promotional artwork to share with the masses. Have a look at the image below.

Takashi Miike’s Terra Formars Adaptation Hits Japan This April

It goes without saying that I’ll watch anything Takashi Miike makes, even when he’s adapting an odd sci-fi manga for the big screen. The prolific director’s upcoming feature, Terra Formars, is based on the manga of the same name. Judging from the trailer, which appeared online sometime last year, it appears to be one of Miike’s more subdued endeavors. In other words, don’t expect any piano wire, psychotic superheroes, or vaginal blowdarts. Sometimes a change is good, right?

Crunchyroll has a pretty good summary of the Terra Formar anime’s plot. Although the movie may differ slightly, this is essentially what you should expect from the flick:

With Earth becoming increasingly overpopulated, an ambitious plan has been put into place to terraform Mars using mold and cockroaches. Nearly 500 years after the plan, a mission to Mars, Annex 1, is under way to accomplish crucial research into the Virus currently plaguing mankind with the crew members who’ve been injected with various DNA of life on Earth in order to combat the Terraformars, giant humanoid cockroaches.

If Terra Formars isn’t your thing, stay tuned: the filmmaker is also working on an adaptation of Blade of the Immortal and a sequel to The Mole Song. That’s the good thing about being a Takashi Miike fan — if you didn’t like his last film, you don’t have long to wait until the next one arrives.

Terra Formars hits Japan on April 29, 2016. Check out the trailer below.

Damien Has Many Names in this New Teaser Trailer

0

We’ve had the opportunity to check out several episodes of the upcoming A&E series “Damien,” and while it’s a little uneven (especially at first), fans of the film The Omen, to which it serves as a direct sequel, should be pretty pleased.  And as far as performances go, I predict we’ll be seeing Barbara Hershey for sure at next year’s Emmy Awards.

In any event, you’ll all have a chance to make up your own minds about the show beginning on March 7th, when it debuts immediately following the Season 4 return of “Bates Motel.” Right now we have a new teaser trailer to share.

About “Damien”:
“Damien” follows the adult life of Damien Thorn, the mysterious child from the 1976 horror film The Omen, who has grown up seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Haunted by his past, Damien must now come to terms with his true destiny — that he is the Antichrist. The saga begins when Damien, an acclaimed war photographer, returns home to New York after experiencing a traumatic event while on assignment in Syria. Strange occurrences and flashbacks plague him, and he is then forced to confront his true identity.

“Damien” stars Bradley James (“Merlin,” “Homeland”) along with Oscar® nominee Barbara Hershey (“Once Upon a Time”), Omid Abtahi (“Better Call Saul”), Megalyn E.K. (“House of Lies”), Scott Wilson (“The Walking Dead”), David Meunier (“Justified”), and Robin Weigert (“Sons of Anarchy”).

“Damien” is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios for A&E Network. Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead,” “The Shield”) serves as writer and executive producer via his 44 Strong Productions. Ross Fineman, who developed the project alongside Mazzara, executive produces through his company, Fineman Entertainment. Pancho Mansfield also serves as executive producer. Golden Globe® and BAFTA Award-nominated director Shekhar Kapur directed and executive produced the first episode.

John Carpenter Has Both a New Album and Live Shows Scheduled

0

He may not have directed any films in a while, but John Carpenter is sure as hell keeping busy. He’s currently working on a new album titled Lost Themes II, which can be pre-ordered via iTunes, but he’s also got some live shows planned in both the UK and Iceland. Full details can be found below.

From the Press Release:
On Halloween 2014, the director and composer John Carpenter introduced the world to the next phase of his career with “Vortex,” the first single from Lost Themes, his first-ever album of non-soundtrack material. In the months that followed, Lost Themes rightfully returned Carpenter to the forefront of the discussion of music and film’s crucial intersection. Carpenter’s foundational primacy and lasting influence on genre score work was both rediscovered and reaffirmed. Lost Themes was also a milemarker in its label’s catalog, being one of the best selling albums in Sacred Bones’ eight-year history. So widespread was the acclaim for Lost Themes that the composer was moved to embark on something he had never before entertained – playing his music live in front of an audience.

Today, Carpenter announces a sequel to Lost Themes: Lost Themes II, which is due for release on April 15th via Sacred Bones. He also announces his first ever live shows at Primavera Sound, ATP Iceland, Manchester’s Albert Hall, and London’s Troxy – details below.

The follow-up album brings quite a few noticeable changes to the process, which result in an even more fluid and thematic record. Lost Themes’ co-writers and musicians Cody Carpenter (John’s son) and Daniel Davies (John’s godson) both returned. Unlike their first album, when they often worked over the internet exchanging themes over the course of several years, this time all three brought in sketches and worked together in the same city, a luxury they weren’t afforded on the first Lost Themes. The result was a more focused effort, one that was completed on a compressed schedule — not unlike Carpenter’s classic, notoriously low-budget early films.

During this time, the three of them also composed and recorded the main titles theme for the CBS drama “Zoo,” and Daniel also scored the feature film Condemned. Cody was previously known for his work on the “Masters of Horror” series, and Daniel provided music for Lakeshore Entertainment, MTV, and Warner Bros. Television.

The musical world of Lost Themes II is also a wider one than that of its predecessor; more electric and acoustic guitar help flesh out the songs, still driven by Carpenter’s trademark minimal synth. This manifests itself brilliantly in songs like the lead single “Distant Dream,” which hitches a familiar Carpenterian beat to an expressive drum performance and rides it to a thrilling conclusion. The eerie “Angel’s Asylum” lets an ethereal synth line command the first three quarters of the song, before turning over the melody to an acoustic guitar, and “Virtual Survivor” delivers a blast of the sci-fi menace that characterized his great scores for films like Assault on Precinct 13 and They Live. Lost Themes II delivers eleven compelling new tracks with which fans can continue to score the movies in their minds.

John and his bandmates will hit the road this year performing both lost and newly found themes, in addition to retrospective work from Mr. Carpenter’s multi-generational career.

Long live the Horror Master!

John Carpenter live dates:

Jun 2 – Barcelona ES, Primavera Sound
Jul 1-3 – Ásbrú IS, ATP Iceland
Oct 28 – Manchester UK, Albert Hall *2nd show added!*
Oct 29 – Manchester UK, Albert Hall
Oct 31 – London UK, Troxy

Lost Themes II tracklist:

1. Distant Dream
2. White Pulse
3. Angel’s Asylum
4. Hofner Dawn
5. Windy Death
6. Dark Blues
7. Virtual Survivor
8. Bela Lugosi

Martyrs (Blu-ray / DVD)

MartyrsStarring Troian Bellesario, Bailey Noble, Caitlin Carmichael

Directed by Kevin Goetz, Michael Goetz

I’ll be the first to give credit when it’s applicably due: Take a solid, well-constructed film and pay homage to it with a mirrored presentation, and you’ve got something to behold (in the eyes of the masses, that is). However, there are some who will remain loyal to the original, no matter how strongly crafted the new model may appear to be. In the case of the Goetz brothers’ remake of the 2008 French shocker Martyrs, we’re not necessarily eyeballing anything new here, and unless you’re a die-hard fan of the 8-year-old prototype, one could certainly argue the point with: “Was there REALLY a need for a remake?”

When Pascal Laugier unleashed his brutal, unforgiving look at retribution gone horribly awry a few years back, horror audiences were shocked and generally pleased (some, I should say), and the visuals alone were enough to strike a chord in any aficionado’s heart – it was vivid, unrelenting, and engaging to those who love simple brutality with their storyline. Enter 2016, and the remake is set to be tossed into the laps of viewers who will, in turn, have the ultimate say about whether or not this modified rendition will be worth its weight – only time will tell.

Holding down the fort in this particular version are Troian Bellesario as the tortured Lucie and Bailey Noble as her friend Anna, and for all intents and purposes, the two worked very well here, with Bellesario shedding her ABC Family persona on “Pretty Little Liars” to play a damaged woman who will stop at nothing to lay waste to those who inflicted so much pain and suffering upon her in her younger years. Now while I love to lay down the details with a certain amount of heaviness, in order to protect the minutiae contained within, I’ll leave the specifics out in the cold, but I can tell you that this remake doesn’t exactly follow the same path as its predecessor.

While violent in spurts, it looks as if the Goetz brothers opted for a bit of a more marketable display, rather than the bone-jarring barbarism most will remember from the original, and that in and of itself could force many fans to shed their skin (pun intended) of this recasting and opt to never leave the side of the antecedent. Even characters who held more prominent footholds in the French version looked to be watered down and lost in translation, leaving the focal point upon the two female leads. Yet, something just appeared “off” in their interaction with one another. For two characters who are supposed to be leaning heavily upon each other, at times there looked to be a stranger’s wall between them.

Overall, I can recommend Martyrs as a one-time watch, mainly to those who would care to compare and contrast to the primary, but after the credits roll on this one, I’m sure the multitude will choose to keep the initial movie tightly packed in their DVD stacks.

  • First Look Featurette

U N H O L Y Asks the Question: Are You #TeamHoly or #TeamUnholy?

0
0

No, we didn’t introduce unnecessary spaces into that headline. Anthony Daniel’s proposed television series “U N H O L Y” is stylized with those spaces, which, obviously, leaves plenty of room for the Holy Ghost. All kidding aside, Daniels and company reportedly pitched the idea to a handful of television executives, and a few networks have a keen interest in bringing this story to life.

Here’s the setup: In the not-too-distant future, the Devil has assumed control of most of the planet — 99% to be exact. Not surprisingly, the remaining 1% isn’t too thrilled about this demonic scenario, and they’re planning to do something about it. Their mission: dethrone the Devil and return peace and tranquility to the Earth. Of course, this is easier said than done.

Instead of simply pulling plot points out of thin air, Daniel and company delved into the Bible to piece together the story for “U N H O L Y.” And as opposed to relying on fantastic elements, he wants to instill fear in the audience by approaching the subject from a religious perspective.

Daniel had this to say about the project: “This show is something fresh and new. It will be along the style of ‘Game of Thrones’ but modern post-apocalyptic. The main character (known as the hand of God) was a priest until he broke his vows and slept with someone he loved, but he finds his old sins washed away by an older priest that he comes across during Season 1. The show has a few good twists involving how the main character is tricked by the Devil to help make his son, which comes for revenge. The group must first go through the four Horsemen to help get clues of finding the Devil’s identity along with finding where the Spear of Destiny is hidden. We want to scare the audience but at the same time keep them watching… The only question is what team are you on: #TeamHoly or #TeamUnholy?”

Since Anthony Daniel’s “U N H O L Y” is still very much in the early stages of development, we don’t have a lot of details to share with the masses as of this writing. However, try your best to swing by the official Facebook page, and keep your eyes peeled for more info. And if we get our hands on some details down the road, we’ll be sure to share them with the class.

More casting news is here for the 2-hour television event that will serve to reboot 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as THR is reporting that “Masters of Sex” actress and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford has nabbed the role of Columbia.

Victor Miller Invites You to Play Rock Paper Dead

Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller is a busy guy in the world of horror these days. Not only is attached to director Michael Coulombe’s Eden Falls, he’s also co-writing another genre flick called Rock Paper Dead. The film also features Ari Lehman and Kane Hodder, who are certainly no strangers to the world of Crystal Lake. And if you still need another Friday the 13th connection, Harry Manfredini will serve as composer on the endeavor. Don’t tell me you’re not abundantly excited right now.

IMDb provides us with the following synopsis:

“A new entry into the horror family from the man who brought you Friday the 13th, Victor Miller. Rock Paper Dead is the story of serial killer, Peter “the Doll Maker” Harris, who returns to his ancestral family estate after being released from the state’s hospital for the criminally insane after twenty years – a “cured” man. Once inside that old house, anguished memories from a tortured childhood and the visitations from past victims shake Peter’s resolve, but it isn’t until lovely young Ashley enters his life that Peter makes a fateful decision. One that will rekindle old desires that always ended in murder.”

Rock Paper Dead also features Dee Wallace, Bruce Davison, Michael Berryman, and a host of fresh faces. A few more fan-favorite horror icons could pop up as well. Principal filming should begin within the next few months, so expect to hear more about this title as the year wears on. Considering the talent in front of and behind the camera, this is possibly one to keep your eyes on.

More early acquisition news coming in a Screen Daily is reporting that LevelK has acquired world rights to Luke Shanahan’s forthcoming feature debut, psychological thriller Rabbit, which will start shooting in May in South Australia.

Abbey Lee (pictured; The Neon Demon, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Alex Russell (Chronicle, Unbroken) will star.

The psychological thriller tells the story of 25-year old medical student Maude, who is haunted by visions of her identical twin’s violent abduction. Convinced the twin is still alive, Maude follows clues to a caravan park where she discovers her fate is intrinsically linked to her sister’s, and encounters a secret society.

Writer-director Shanahan, who previously directed the shorts It Takes Two To Tango and The News, said: “The concept behind Rabbit was to introduce a horrific ‘event’ and explore a genetic link between identical twins and their ability to communicate telepathically. I was interested in exploring how two characters, sharing 99 percent of the same DNA, deal with such feelings of loss, pain and guilt.

David Ngo (One Eyed Girl) produces for Longshot Films and Projector Films, with backing from South Australian Film Corporation, Fulcrum Media, The Cutting Room Post Production and Digital Artisan.

Welcome to Willits Feature – Cast Rounds Out; Filming Begins

0
0

Director Trevor Ryan’s 14-minute short film Welcome to Willits: After Sundown, which premiered at SXSW last year, is currently being turned into a feature by Ryan himself, and right now we have some exciting casting news for you!

From the Press Release:
Bill Sage, Dolph Lundgren, Anastasia Baranova, and Sabina Gadecki will lead the cast of Welcome to Willits. Rory Culkin, Thomas Dekker, Chris Zylka, Garrett Clayton, Karrueche Tran, and Keelin Woodell round out the cast in supporting roles. The feature directorial debut of Trevor Ryan, written by his brother Tim Ryan, the film is adapted from their acclaimed 2015 SXSW Midnight Short “Welcome to Willits: After Sundown.” The film is produced by Jordan Yale Levine/Yale Productions, Scott Levenson, Jon Keeyes, and Shaun Sanghani/SSS Entertainment. Executive Producers include Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, Joe Listhaus, Michael Rothstein, and Brandon Baker. Event Film Distribution is handling worldwide sales.

Combining elements of horror, sci-fi, and comedy, WELCOME TO WILLITS takes place deep in the Northern California woods, where residents struggle to fight off repeated attacks from mysterious creatures. When local pot farmer Brock (Bill Sage; We Are What We Are, American Psycho) is caught up with a wayward group of campers, the situation quickly escalates into total carnage. Together with a ragtag crew including his wife, Peggy (Sabina Gadecki, “Entourage”); niece Courtney (Anastasia Baranova, “Z Nation”); scruffy drifter Possum (Rory Culkin, Gabriel); wannabe singer/songwriter Zack (Garrett Clayton, Teen Beach Movie); resourceful good old boy Jeremiah (Chris Zylka, “The Leftovers”), unemployed stoner Klaus (Thomas Dekker, A Nightmare on Elm Street); Klaus’ naïve girlfriend, Besh (Karrueche Tran, A Weekend with the Family); and ditsy sorority girl Cassie (Keelin Woodell), Brock struggles to maintain his sanity while defending his family from perceived supernatural threats. Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables) portrays Derek, a weathered police officer from Brock’s past who comes back to haunt him.

“Using old-school special effects techniques, augmented with digital finishing touches, WELCOME TO WILLITS will be a throwback to great horror and sci-fi films of the past, while also offering a fresh take on the genre,” commented director Trevor Ryan. “The film offers a more complex anti-hero in Brock, a sympathetic figure reminiscent of everyone’s favorite uncle who has a little too much to drink at the family reunion and who you just wish would get a handle on himself before it’s too late.”

Producers Jordan Yale Levine and Scott Levenson previously collaborated with cast members Thomas Dekker and Rory Culkin on Dekker’s directorial debut, Jack Goes Home, and with Garrett Clayton on Justin Kelly’s King Cobra, which also stars James Franco and Christian Slater. Both films recently wrapped production.

WELCOME TO WILLITS commences production in Shreveport, Louisiana, this week.

Uncaged (2016)Starring Ben Getz, Gene Jones, Kyle Kirkpatrick

Directed by Daniel Robbins

Rolling back the archival memory regarding werewolf films over the course of the years, they’ve been delineated in a catalog of ways: ultraviolent, comedic, and even romantic in nature. Looking at the cover art of Daniel Robbins’ latest lycanthropic feature, Uncaged, I immediately had somewhat of a reservation, considering that it reminded me of an MTV “Teen Wolf”-like image… however, the proof is in the viewing, and after the final credits rolled, I  decided that this is a fun little flick, faults aside.  Let’s get to scratchin’.

Ben Getz gets (see what I did there) the top bill as Jack, a late-teen whose life hasn’t been all blue skies and puppy dogs. His younger years were plagued by family tragedy, and he was orphaned, coming up in age with his cousin and best buddy. Travel forward some years later, and good old Jake has developed a bit of a problem: waking up in the morning, half-naked with no recollection of the previous night’s events. Now while this somewhat sounds like my early to mid-twenties time frame, Jake’s quandary is more along the lines of a beastly conjecture. In order to concretely confirm his suspicions, he fixes a Go-Pro upon himself to see what evidence he can collect during one late night set of activities – low and behold, his worries are confirmed. Simply due to the notion that I’m deathly abhorrent towards the first-person POV format, I had to outline a large chalk negative against the movie for just that, although there are some positives that pulled the film’s fat out of the fryer.

Getz’s performance is sturdy enough, but it’s reinforced by the acting around him – Gene Jones (The Sacrament), while in a compact performance, still manages to chew up his scenes, and there is a plentiful measure of laughs that offsets the at-times stagnant pacing. Robbins’s decision (and lack of dough) to use practical effects was a very welcome sight – things don’t always have to be generated on the ol’ compu-tor in order to look passable.

Look, Uncaged is fun, simple, and a refreshing change from some movies that decide to beat your skull into submission in order to convey a story. This is a late Saturday night watch, for sure – give it a look when the moon is right.

First The Final Project Clip Brings the Spooky!

A creepy woman in the window is the focus of the first clip released from The Final Project, in which six college students go hunting for the supernatural… until the supernatural comes hunting for them!

From CAVU Pictures and 3rd Fathom Films comes a horror film based on a real-life plantation with a disturbingly dark past. The Final Project hits theaters beginning February 12th in Atlanta and Houston and March 4th in New York and Los Angeles, then expanding nationwide thereafter.

Taylor Ri’chard directs. Amber Erwin, Teal Haddock, Arin Jones, Evan McLean, Leonardo Santaiti, and Sergio Suave star.

Utilizing real locations in and around Georgia, The Final Project features a crew and ensemble of dedicated locals well acquainted with the haunted history of the South. Combining the “found footage” genre with authentic local folklore, it updates the classic American ghost story by tapping into a history too chillingly real to deny. The backstory of The Final Project combines an Old Hollywood touch with a real-life twist. Chretien Point Plantation in Sunset, Louisiana, the real-life model for the film’s Lafitte Plantation, was also the inspiration for the interior of the legendary “Tara” from Gone with the Wind.

Its true claim to fame, however, lies closer to home. The site of a pitched and bloody battle between Union and Confederate soldiers at the height of the Civil War, with a bullet hole still embedded in one of its front doors, Chretien Point has long been rumored to be one of the biggest supernatural “hot spots” in North America. Ghostly sightings have been reported for decades, with stories of buried treasure, a vengeful “house mistress,” and even a nearby haunted bridge.

Synopsis:
Six college students have organized the ultimate graduation project… a documentary film about one of the most notorious haunted houses in America, the Lafitte Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana. A Civil War landmark with a dark past, complete with stories of mutilated soldiers, murdered families, and restless shadows roaming its abandoned corridors… no one has entered Lafitte in years – until now. Outfitted with high-tech recording equipment in order to capture every moment of their great adventure, these intrepid young filmmakers bravely venture deep into the misty backwoods of Louisiana. But on this plantation that time has forgotten, something evil still waits and watches. When darkness falls, their deepest fears come to life, as one by one they’ll learn the horrifying truth that awaits all who dare seek the secrets of the Lafitte Plantation. The dead are awake, and there are some places the living should never go.

More distribution news is coming out of this year’s European Film Market as the Gothic flick Angelica has scored itself a home. Read on for details.

From the Press Release:
Spotlight Pictures has acquired worldwide sales rights for the Gothic drama ANGELICA. Written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein (Teeth), the film stars Jena Malone (The Hunger Games, Contact), two-time Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs, Tumbleweeds), and Ed Stoppard (The Pianist). Produced by Joyce Pierpoline (Teeth), the film is based on the novel by Arthur Phillips with the same name. ANGELICA first premiered as an official selection at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and will be showing this month at the European Film Market (EFM) on Sunday, February 14th, at 6:30pm at CinemaxX. Spotlight Pictures’ CEO Matt McCombs made the announcement today.

“We are excited beyond words to work with Mitchell and Joyce on this compelling and superbly crafted motion picture,” said McCombs. “We are confident that distributors worldwide will connect with the unique vision that Mitchell has created.”

“I’m psyched to be putting ANGELICA into the capable hands of the folks at Spotlight Pictures,” said Lichtenstein. “They will be effective, enthusiastic custodians of our beautiful and intensely emotional film, bringing it to a wide and diverse audience.”

ANGELICA is a Gothic tale of a newly married couple living in Victorian London who endure a series of increasingly alarming psychological and supernatural effects following the birth of their child.

Aside from its talented cast, a team of seasoned artists collaborated on the movie, including two-time Academy Award® nominee cinematographer Dick Pope (for Mr. Turner and The Illusionist), Academy Award® nominee costume designer Rita Ryack (Casino, Apollo 13), and Academy Award® winning production designer Luciana Arrighi (Howard’s End). Two-time César winner Zbigniew Preisner also composed the haunting score.

Spotlight Pictures Head of Acquisitions Carlos Rincon and producer Joyce Pierpoline negotiated the deal.

We told you a couple of weeks ago that a new version of “The Exorcist” would be heading to the small screen as a series, and today we know who one of the folks at the reins will be. Deadline is reporting that Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is set to direct Fox’s pilot, a modern reinvention inspired by William Blatty’s 1971 book.

Written by Jeremy Slater, “The Exorcist” is described as a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession and confronting the face of true evil.

Speaking of the face of true evil… guys… get Eileen Dietz back as Pazuzu. No one else could pull it off better, and it will at the very least lend some authenticity to the project… please?
