Tribulations (Book)

tribulationsWritten by Richard Thomas

Published by Crystal Lake Publishing

Much of the modern world of literary darkness is dominated by the hokey, the lame, and the boring. Tired old monsters and motifs trudging through endless pages, performing by rote and doing anything at all but scaring the reader.

Richard Thomas isn’t interested in regurgitating that old bullshit. Instead, he’s been creating some of the most original and compelling neo-noir out there today. The stuff he writes isn’t horrifying because it’s gory or supernatural or weird, although it can be all three. It’s horrifying because it feels real.

Tribulations, Thomas’ latest book of short stories, is no different. You won’t find much in the way of tradition here. No skulking vampires shying away from crosses; no howling werewolves rending human flesh; no unkillable killers stalking coeds through the woods. Instead, you’ll find identifiable characters in some of the most awful situations imaginable. These stories are indeed monstrous, but they’re full of purely human suffering. Tragedy, loss, and regret abound; and no matter how strange the circumstances, it’s impossible not to get sucked in to these genuine nightmares. There’s just no way for the reader to separate himself from Thomas’ stories. No way to pull back and be an observer.

This is dark magic, this ability to make the freakish seem everyday. Few of us will ever have to contemplate sacrificing our children to unseen beasts in the woods. Fewer still will ever lose a lover and find a way to regrow her out of the earth where she died. These are singularly odd situations. However, Thomas’ great talent is in bypassing the outlandish with characters who are real and honest. The reader forgets that these things are eccentric and impossible because the characters are just so goddamn possible.

Too often, authors rely on the sheer toxicity of events to carry the story. It doesn’t matter how crippled and cardboard the protagonist is if he keeps going through horrible shit. So what if he has no depth, no authenticity, no humanity? He was captured by psycho hillbillies, raped by their pet bobcat, and forced to eat his own wife before escaping into the woods where he stepped in a bear trap and had to hack his foot off with a shovel.

But the fact that horrid things happen to people isn’t really important unless we care about the people involved. If we don’t, then the story just becomes a listless litany of useless misery.

Same with the bizarre. Some authors try to scrape together a story based solely on how weird they can make it. But weirdness for weirdness’ sake is boring, too. You can almost feel the writer trying too hard, straining to take it to such a peculiar level that the reader simply forgets there’s no real story there and marvels at the absurdity.

These are not issues that Thomas has. His characters are so easy to identify with, so painfully broken, and so ultimately human, you’ll be trapped in their weird stories while terrible things happen to them. The pages damn near breathe with their reality. Their monsters are your monsters. Their suffering is your suffering.

Richard Thomas is on the cutting edge of neo-noir fiction, and I dare anyone to say different. Tribulations is his best yet: elegantly twisted, superbly creepy, and dripping darkness. This is required reading for anyone into the shadow side of literature.

Star Wars’ JJ Abrams and Daisy Ridley Fall into a Kolma

Paramount is getting set to reunite JJ Abrams with his Star Wars star Daisy Ridley for another new flick as The Wrap is reporting that the duo are planning to reteam on Kolma, a fantasy thriller that Diary of a Teenage Girl filmmaker Marielle Heller is in negotiations to direct for Paramount.

Kolma is based on Keren Margalit’s 2003 Israeli movie of the week titled All I’ve Got (Kol Ma She’Yesh Li). Described as a cross between a loftier, more mystical version of The Notebook and Albert Brooks‘ 1991 fantasy romance Defending Your Life, the project follows a young couple who get in a car accident that leaves the man dead. Decades later, the old woman must choose whether to reunite with her long-lost love in the afterlife or return to the fateful day her life changed forever.

Not sure how Dreadworthy this one will turn out but we’ll keep you posted if need be.

Balls! Yoga Hosers Gets an R Rating! Kevin Smith Fights for PG-13! Testicular Fortitude Abounds!

The MPAA. You just never know how they’re going to rate something. It really seems as if it just depends on their mood at the time of a particular viewing. The next movie to fall victim to the cinematic mood swings is Kevin Smith’s genre comedy Yoga Hosers.

The MPAA gave my kids movie Yoga Hosers an R rating for a cartoony drawing of testicles on a book cover,” writes Smith on his Instagram page. “So now, for the 4th time in my 22 year career, we will hold an appeals screening with the Motion Picture Association of America’s ratings board and try to get the R overturned for a less severe (and far more appropriate) PG-13.

Really? A cartoon nutsac is the latest thing disturbing their applecart? Check out the whole post from Smith below!

The #MPAA gave my kids movie @YogaHosers an R rating for a cartoony drawing of testicles on a book cover. So now, for the 4th time in my 22 year career, we will hold an appeals screening with the Motion Picture Association of America’s ratings board and try to get the R overturned for a less severe (and far more appropriate) PG-13. I also ran afoul of the MPAA the first time I made a movie set in a convenience store, when they initially slapped Clerks with an NC-17 rating for language. Back then, Harvey Weinstein hired mega-lawyer Alan Dershowitz and turned our rating appeal into a Free Speech case. But on the day of the actual appeals screening, it was just me and the Miramax lawyer getting up in front of the appeals folks to argue for a less restrictive rating without having to change or trim any shots. We won that day and Clerks received the R rating without a single cut. The next two occasions I fought an MPAA rating was on Jersey Girl (won a PG-13 instead of the R they gave us) and Zack and Miri Make a Porno (which went from an NC-17 to an R, without cuts). I don’t mind doing this dance with the MPAA a fourth time (hey – at least they even OFFER an appeals screening) but this #YogaHosers R rating is riDONKulous. The core audience for the flick is tween girls (it’s Clueless meets Gremlins!), so I refrained from salty language to make a totally kid-friendly movie. And while it’s a “horror” movie, there’s no blood on display: when our Bratzi bad guys get killed, concentrated sauerkraut explodes everywhere – not guts or entrails. Honestly, this movie is TAME (or “lame” according to some reviews). Even so, next week I’ll screen the flick for the MPAA appeals audience and, lawyer-like, plead my case for why the film is really PG-13 – all so that I can keep the graffiti drawing of nuts on a fictional library book in my goofy girl-power monster movie. Weird life. Mind you, this is NOT a First Amendment issue at all; instead, it’s the very definition of a First World Problem. But before I can tour the movie in June & July and release it in theaters this August, I’m gonna have to win #TheBattleForTheBalls! #KevinSmith #harleyquinnsmith #lilyrosedepp #johnnydepp

A photo posted by Kevin Smith (@thatkevinsmith) on

Smith is looking to tour with the film beginning in June or July with a theatrical release in August 2016, but he can’t do so without MPAA approval. The Battle of the Balls begins!

The cast for Yoga Hosers includes Harley Quinn Smith, Lily-Rose Depp, Michael Parks, Justin Long, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach, Harley Morenstein, Stan Lee, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, Jason Mewes, and Johnny Depp.

Synopsis:
Colleen Collette and Colleen McKenzie are teenage besties from Winnipeg who love yoga and live on their smartphones. But when these sophomores get invited to a senior party by the school hottie, the Colleens accidentally uncover an ancient evil buried beneath their Canadian convenience store. They join forces with legendary man-hunter Guy Lapointe to fight for their lives.

PAX 2016: Suda51 Lets It Die

Like most eccentric geniuses, the work of Japanese game designer Goichi Suda, who goes by Suda51, rarely resonates with a mainstream audience. Anything that he puts his unique stamp on and develops via his company, Grasshopper Manufacture, is just too damn quirky and out there to be devoured by the masses.

So yeah, his games are never gonna fly off the shelves, Call of Duty style. For instance, Shadows of the Damned, which he made alongside Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, famously only sold only 24,000 copies within its first month of release in the US.

However, the creator of Killer 7, No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Killer Is Dead may have more mainstream success with his next game because it uses the free-to-play model, which should at least attract more players. Called Let It Die, it was announced back in 2013 and is currently playable at PAX in Boston, but if you can’t make it there, then they’ve put out a new trailer.

As you can see, it drops the cel-shaded visuals that his games usually feature in favour of a slightly more realistic approach, but his other trademarks, including gratuitous violence accompanied by copious blood spray, are clearly intact. We don’t know too much about any plot details thus far, other than that it will be set in 2043 and that it has a Grim Reaper looking dude who chops people to bits.

Be prepared to immerse yourself in ultra-violence when Let It Die hits PS4 later this year.

Sigourney Weaver Talks Alien 5; “It’ll Be Worth the Wait”

What’s going on with the Alien franchise? Well, let’s see. For starters, Ridley Scott is currently making a sequel to Prometheus, titled Alien: Covenant, and it’s set for release next year. We don’t yet know how exactly it will connect to the other Alien films, but we can expect it will. But what about Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, you ask?

According to Sigourney Weaver, that project isn’t nearly as dead as we feared.

As reported by Aggressive Comix, Weaver provided an update at a VMware event.

Well, I *think* it is,” replied Weaver, when asked if Alien 5 is still in the works. “Ridley asked Neill NOT to make our Alien til after Prometheus 2. [Ridley] wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an AMAZING script, and Neill and I are REALLY excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we DIDN’T do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

We miss you, Ellen Ripley. Please come back soon.

Mickey Keating Talks Darling and More!

0

Mickey Keating’s Darling (review) took the film festival world by storm, and it is now released on streaming platforms for rental. In the story, which Keating wrote as well as directed, a lonely young woman named Darling (Lauren Ashley Carter) spirals into madness when she becomes the caretaker of a mysterious New York mansion that has a troubled past.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Mickey to get the deets on Darling, and here’s what he had to say.

Dread Central: Darling has been the “darling” of the film festivals… can you tell us a little bit about what that kind of validation of your work means?

MK: Thank you! It’s been a trip, and I’m very excited to see it out in the world. I’m just honored to have premiered at Fantastic Fest and happy I got to tour with it from there. I saw somebody posted a picture of Darling next to one of Ana Karina in Alphaville. I’m glad somebody got that!

DC: Sean Young is a legend. How’d she get cast and what made her right for the role of the homeowner?

MK: Sean Young is a movie star in every single way. Larry Fessenden introduced me to her, and from that moment on, I knew there was nobody else who could play that role. There was a moment before we shot where we thought she wouldn’t be able to do it and I was very disappointed, but fortunately we found a way to make it happen. She brought all her own fur coats and jewelry to the shoot. They cost more than that house I bet. I’m still starstruck.

DC: Your lead, Lauren, is fantastic. Please fill us in on your background together and what she brought to the role of Darling that maybe wasn’t in the script.

MK: Lauren was Darling from the very beginning. It was fantastic to be able to write the role for her because we had worked together on my previous film, and so we got to try something totally different. I like writing with actors in mind because then the movie sculpts itself to them. I wrote the role of her poor victim for Brian too. Lauren became Darling and we got to watch. There are shots we created just because it was thrilling to watch the character live in the space. She even found the dress!

DC: Did you have any push-back from producers or investors about doing Darling in black and white? It’s not very popular. Tell us about your rationale behind this and why you felt it was necessary.

MK: Everybody involved was super supportive. I had worked with a lot of the same people from my previous films and so there was a level of trust. Black and white didn’t feel like a risk at all – it was part of the film’s DNA from the very beginning. There wasn’t a world where there was going be a color version of Darling. We’re far enough along technologically that audiences can recognize it as a clear aesthetic choice. I hope we see a lot more films in monochrome.

DC: We have to ask about Psychopaths… what’s the scoop? We know you’re filming now, but even at this early stage, what can you tell us about what horror fans can look forward to?

MK: We just wrapped and are diving into the edit. This time I wanted to make something more feverish and glamorous like De Palma’s Dressed to Kill and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, or even like Bringing Out the Dead. Lots of larger than life characters and all the actors really brought it. I’m very proud of all involved and can’t wait to start showing people some stuff!

Darling stars Lauren Ashley Carter, Sean Young, Brian Morvant, Larry Fessenden, John Speredakos, and Helen Rogers.

Synopsis:
Darling follows a lonely young woman who moves into an old, mysterious Manhattan mansion. Hired as caretaker, it’s not long before she discovers the estate’s haunted reputation and troubling past—stories that slowly transform into a backdrop for her twisted and violent descent into madness.

Around these parts we LOVED the original Dredd with Karl Urban, and it’s a damned shame it didn’t get a sequel. But things have changed over the last few years, and theatrical isn’t the only avenue for our favorite badass judge.

Apparently Urban realizes this too as he just posted the following via his Twitter account!

Feel the same way? Maybe it would be a good idea to let the powers-that-be know via social media!

New Adaptation of Stephen King’s It Gets a Release Date

Cameras will soon roll on Mama director Andres Muschietti’s feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s It, which will bring the nightmarish Pennywise to the big screen for the very first time. As we recently learned, the movie will film throughout the summer, and today we’ve got an official release date.

You can expect the return of Pennywise on September 8, 2017.

No word yet on casting, but we expect more details very soon.

“Gary Doberman wrote the most recent draft working with [director] Andy Muschietti, so it’s being envisioned as two movies,” producer Roy Lee recently said of the project. “It is very close to the source material in one way but very different if you look at it as a literary piece of work. We’re taking it and making the movie from the point of view of the kids, and then making another movie from the point of view of the adults that could potentially then be cut together like the novel. But it’s gonna be a really fun way of making this movie.

Book Synopsis:
It began for the Losers on a day in June of 1958, the day school let out for the summer. That was the day Henry Bowers carved the first letter of his name on Ben Hanscom’s belly and chased him into the Barrens, the day Henry and his Neanderthal friends beat up on Stuttering Bill Denbrough and Eddie Kaspbrak, the day Stuttering Bill had to save Eddie from his worst asthma attack ever by riding his bike to beat the devil. It ended in August, with seven desperate children in search of a creature of unspeakable evil in the drains beneath Derry. In search of It. And somehow it ended.

Or so they thought. Then.

On a spring night in 1985, Mike Hanlon, once one of those children, makes six calls. Stan Uris, accountant. Richie “Records” Tozier, L.A. disc jockey. Ben Hanscom, renowned architect. Beverly Rogan, dress designer. Eddie Kaspbrak, owner of a successful New York limousine company. And Bill Denbrough, bestselling writer of horror novels. Bill Denbrough, who now only stutters in his dreams.

These six men and one woman have forgotten their childhoods, have forgotten the time when they were Losers… but an unremembered promise draws them back, the present begins to rhyme dreadfully with the past, and when the Losers reunite, the wheels of fate lock together and roll them toward the ultimate terror.

PAX 2016: Friday the 13th Game Heads to Higgins Haven In New Footage

Friday the 13th Part 3is destined to be remembered as the film where Jason donned his iconic hockey mask, so it’s fitting that the Higgins Haven location from the movie will be featured in the upcoming game. It was revealed in a new segment of gameplay footage at PAX, which has Jason slamming a door so hard into someone’s face that their head literally pops.

Another piece of footage was also revealed, which showcased how players will be able to use stealth to hide from Jason, although it probably won’t do much good, as he will have the ability to sense fear in the game.

A few other interesting tidbits were also dropped by developer Gun Media, including the fact that each map will contain random elements to help gameplay avoid becoming repetitive, that each match will last for around 15-20 minutes, that it’s not set in any particular time period from the franchise, and that Jason will become more and more powerful as the game progresses, eventually becoming an unstoppable killing machine. Well, more of one than he already was.

This is by far one of our most anticipated games here at Dread Central, and the footage and news at PAX only made us all the more desperate to play the damn thing when it hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC later this year.

An American Werewolf in London Getting a Making-of Book Called Beware the Moon

The documentary Beware the Moon chronicled the history of John Landis’ classic movie An American Werewolf In London. But there was still more of the story to tell, so an upcoming book of the same name and containing even more details will be released in August, with the first 1000 copies being signed by the author.

From the Press Release:
We are honoured to reveal that for the past couple of months we’ve been working with writer Paul Davis (Director of ‘Beware the Moon) on this beautiful 200 page, all colour hardback adaptation of Paul’s 98 minute love letter to AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.

Even as far back as 2009 Paul always planned to go back to BEWARE THE MOON and restore many of the brilliant hours of stuff he couldn’t fit in the documentary into a book project.

This really is the definitive chronicle on the making of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. Many people have said to Paul, “But the documentary was so extensive.” Paul is still very proud of the documentary, and of course there’s footage in there that you can’t put in a book, but trust us, in terms of stories, images and archive materials… this book blows it away on all fronts!

Special Features of the book:

  • First 1,000 copies will be numbered and signed by the author. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
  • Over 300 behind the scenes photos, many of which have NEVER been published before.
  • Interviews with over 35 members of the original cast and crew. Including material from both the original BEWARE THE MOON documentary sessions and brand new content.
  • Foreword by writer, director and producer Mick Garris.
  • Exclusive cover art by Graham Humphreys.
  • A chat with cast and crew as to how AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON inspired the making of Michael Jackson’s THRILLER.
  • An exploration into the basement of Bob Burns, his wonderful American Werewolf collection and the mind-blowing restoration work carried out by Tom Spina.
  • Books expected to ship in August, in time for the film’s 35th anniversary.

The book will be sold EXCLUSIVELY at http://www.cultscreenings.co.uk OR any Special Events in which Paul and the Cult Screenings team will be there in person.

Disturbing Behavior (Blu-ray)

disturbing behavior scream factoryStarring James Marsden, Katie Holmes, Nick Stahl

Directed by David Nutter

Distributed by Scream Factory

Horror started on a downward trend once the ‘90s rolled around – a descent that has, at least theatrically, continued on through present day – with only a handful of truly memorable movies produced during that time. The early ‘90s were something of a wasteland until 1996, the year of Wes Craven’s Scream. Once that watershed slice of teen horror cinema took hold, it had a rippling effect that lasted for the next few years. Some films chose to be clones of Scream by sticking with the slasher angle, but a few tried to get outside that box while still maintaining a certain style that worked so well for Wes. For me, this was my heyday of watching just about anything horror in theaters every chance I had. Disturbing Behavior (1998) came out during the summer before my senior year – prime time – yet even then I avoided seeing it because it just looked… lame. And now, 18 years later I have finally seen the film and it appears my younger self was correct – the movie is pretty lame. This is such a bland, forgettable film that I’m struggling to remember salient plot details for this review, and I watched it only a few days ago.

After a requisite opening kill, in which jocks are established as a force to be reckoned with and the town’s top cop is very aware, the film introduces up to Steve (James Marsden). He’s the new kid in Cradle Bay, a picturesque little hamlet in Washington. His family moved here from Chicago after his brother Allen (Ethan Embry, who barely factors into the film) committed suicide. Everyone is hoping for a fresh start. The first friends Steve makes after arriving at school are of the stereotypical miscreant variety. Gavin (Nick Stahl), a conspiracy theorist; U.V. (Chad E. Donella), an albino played by a guy who is clearly not an albino; and, Rae (Katie Holmes), playing the bad girl popular guys in the film pretend they don’t want to bang. Gavin tells Steve he has a theory about the jocks, collectively known as “Blue Ribbons”; he thinks they’re evil. Steve isn’t so sure.

He starts getting sure-er after noticing “problem” classmates who are considered outsiders by the Blue Ribbons are suddenly showing up at school looking prim and proper, joining up with their former enemies. Steve suspicions are somewhat confirmed when Dorian (William Sadler), the janitor, tells him that his own research has led him to believe the town’s kids are reprogrammed drones incapable of independent thought thanks to techniques of which he is still unaware. Dorian inadvertently stumbles upon a solution to his own problem, however, when he created something called the “E-Rat-itcator” to help him kill local vermin for cash. It turns out the device also causes the hive-minded Blue Ribbons to get a major headache, disrupting their ability to smash faces and wreak havoc.

The Blue Ribbons want Steve to be part of their group, but he rejects their offer. When Dr. Caldicott (Bruce Greenwood) shows up at his home, it becomes clear that the jocks targeted him for a reason: his parents are in on it, too. Steve and Rae team up with whatever friends they have remaining, stopping at every exposition point along the way to a big finale wherein it’s another “us vs. them” fight before an expected conclusion complete with sly wink ending.

This movie is just boring. There isn’t any other way to put it. As far as teenage horror films go, none of the cast or actors here are good enough to distract from a weak story. As an R-rated movie, it never goes far enough to outweigh the negatives. There are no big FX moments or memorable kills. I’m not even sure why this is R-rated in the first place, although I think there might have been boobs. Maybe language? Either way, this could have been cut down to a PG-13 and it wouldn’t have made much of a difference.

The unfortunate thing is the studio more or less took this project away from director David Nutter, forcing recuts that trimmed the running time down to a scant 83 minutes. Most of the excised footage is included here, as it was on previous DVD releases, with the cut moments actually adding quite a bit to the overall story. Fans edits reincorporating that footage exist, but if Nutter had the chance to do a proper director’s cut then maybe this could have been a bit better. Subplots, such as Steve’s brother’s suicide, don’t go anywhere in theatrical cut.

I’m also bummed out that Mark Snow did the music here and it is just as forgettable as the film itself. This sounds like every other teen horror score and if Snow had gotten a little more creative it might have helped the film.

Sometimes I enjoy digging up these ‘90s relics and finding they’re just as enjoyable today as they were twenty-some-odd years ago, and in some case even more so. But Disturbing Behavior never looked like a particularly interesting film; it’s a Stepford Wives (1975) derivative for the teenage crowd. If you want to take a trip down nostalgia lane, or if you’re truly looking to be educated on some ‘90s horror cinema, there are better avenues to take.

The 1.85:1 1080p image gets a literally night & day difference transfer, with nighttime scenes appearing grain-heavy and lacking in fine details. Daylight shots, however, show off a fair amount of detail, with pleasing color saturation and much stronger definition overall. Black levels are a bit hazy and inconsistent, with some minor compression issues cropping up during very dark scenes.

An English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound track is the proper choice for audio here, though the included 2.0 stereo track should suffice as well. The track is surprisingly robust at times, displaying a greater sense of depth and presence than expected. Dialogue comes through clean and clear and there are no obvious issues with the track. Crank it up and revel in all the horribly dated ‘90s music. Subtitles are included in English.

Director David Nutter’s audio commentary from MGM’s DVD finds a new home here. The soft-spoken helmer discusses the expected topics, while also touching upon what scenes wound up being cut and why.

A big ol’ reel of deleted scenes, running for almost 25 minutes, and the film’s theatrical trailer can also be found here.

Special Features:

  • Audio commentary by director David Nutter
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Alternate Ending
