While there haven’t been any official Nightmare on Elm Street movies since the trashy remake back in 2010, the fans have been far from silent. Director Chris R. Notarile has produced a series of shorts called Krueger: Tales from Elm Street (Facebook), which explore the mysterious history of the man who would later don the bladed clove and striped sweater.

Check out the latest entry below, and if you like what you see, then head over to Change.org to sign a petition asking Warner Bros. to officially hire the star of the series, Roberto Lombardi, as Freddy.

Synopsis:
From director Chris R. Notarile comes a collection of tales involving everyone’s favorite slasher from Springwood. This page is dead-icated to the chronicling of all of Blinky Productions’ contributions to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

In Springwood, long before he became a demon of dreams, Freddy Krueger stalked the streets under another name – The Springwood Slasher.

PS4 Being Plagued by Neverending Nightmares

Originally released on Steam back in 2014, the horror game Neverending Nightmares, which has you taking control of Thomas, a man trapped in a chain of one horrific dream after the next, has finally made its console debut on PS4.

The game received high praise for its beautiful art style, which was stylized to resemble black and white pencil sketches with splashes of color. It looks so damn pretty that I’m not entirely sure that you would even want to awaken from these nightmares.

Synopsis:
Neverending Nightmares is a psychological horror game inspired by the developer’s actual battle with mental illness. In the game you take on the role of Thomas, who awakens from a terrible nightmare only to find that he is still dreaming. As he descends deeper through the layers of hellish dreamscapes, he must hide from horrifying apparitions and outrun his inner demons. He must discover which of the horrors he encounters are a manifestation of his own psychological state and figure out what reality will be when he finally wakes up.

You’ll be able to find the film online and in stores on July 12th (pre-order here).

From the Press Release:
For years, fans have been clamoring for the definitive word on the making of George A. Romero’s classic 1982 horror anthology CREEPSHOW, the first of his many big screen collaborations with best-selling novelist Stephen King. Now, 34 years later, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Pictures join forces to bring this terrifyingly entertaining story to life in JUST DESSERTS: THE MAKING OF CREEPSHOW, a special edition Blu-ray release documenting one of the greatest horror films ever made!

With an all-star cast and featuring gruesome and groundbreaking creature and make-up effects by genre legend Tom Savini, CREEPSHOW stands as a horrific and often hilarious tribute to the stories that helped influence (and corrupt) a generation of writers and filmmakers, and now the tales behind the creation of this chilling masterpiece can finally be told.

JUST DESSERTS: THE MAKING OF CREEPSHOW is filled with rare behind-the-scenes footage, photographs, and other exciting memorabilia. Featuring over a dozen interviews, including George A. Romero, Tom Savini, Adrienne Barbeau, Ed Harris, Tom Atkins, and many others, this Special Edition Blu-ray also contains hours of additional supplemental materials. Simon West to Unleash War Wolf

Loving werewolf movies as much as we do, the title War Wolf alone has us tickled pink! According to Variety, veteran action director Simon West (Con-Air, The Expendables 2, The Mechanic) has been set to helm the upcoming furiously furry flick with shooting set for Italy in November.

Producers are Ileen Maisel, Lawrence Elman, and Jib Polhemus. West will direct from a script by Andy Briggs and Paul Finch. Finch, author of the Heck crime novels, is currently working on a novelization of the project.

Fortitude Intl. will launch international sales in Cannes. War Wolf is the first in a planned franchise of films (of course) under a partnership among West, Fortitude, and Amber Entertainment centered around the magical world of the Loup de Guerre.

War Wolf is set in 1356, after decades of war between the French and English armies, with English solider Earl Hugo awarded the castle of his enemy, the French assassin Mauchet. But in the walls of the castle and the lands that surround it, someone has reawakened the Loup de Guerre, the ferocious War Wolf of French legend; and the nightmarish creature is now on a killing spree.

The special effects makeup and costuming for the project will be created by Dave Elsey and Lou Elsey, co-founders of the Igor Studios. The Elseys have worked on Mission: Impossible, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and Wolves. Dave Elsey and Rick Baker shared an Academy Award for 2010’s The Wolfman.

The popularity of the fantasy genre around the globe continues to grow, and the fierce world of War Wolf is an electric story,” said Fortitude’s Nadine de Barros. “Under the masterful direction of Simon West and the brilliant team of Dave and Lou Elsey behind the special effects makeup, this film is going to blow people away with both the look of this fantastical world and the intense storytelling.

More as it comes.

Real-Life Horror Film Bridgend Available Today on Digital SVOD

$

We see a lot of “art imitating life” projects cross our path here at Dread Central, and the latest, Bridgend, seems even more horrific than most. The critically acclaimed, Danish-made film about teenage suicide is being released today as a Fandor Exclusive Digital SVOD release and is also opening theatrically in New York City at Cinema Village.

From the Press Release:
Based on a real life, mysterious teenage suicide cluster that took place in a former coal mining province in Wales (between December 2007 and January 2012, 79 suicides were officially committed in the area; most of the victims were teenagers who hanged themselves and left no suicide notes), filmmaker Jeppe Rønde followed teenagers in the area for six years and wrote the narrative script based on their life stories. Shot entirely on location in Wales, many of the local teenagers act in the film as well.

Deftly structured around young heroine Sara (an award-winning performance by Hannah Murray from UK’s “Skins” and Gilly on “Game of Thrones”), the film paints a sensitive exploration of natural adolescent confusion, romanticism, and sadness, set amidst rugged natural landscapes and award-winning cinematography. This is filmmaker Rønde’s fiction film debut.

Bridgend premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, winning three of the six main awards – Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Murray’s co-stars include Josh O’Connor and Steven Waddington.

Synopsis:
Bridgend follows Sara and her dad, Dave, as they arrive to a small village in Bridgend County. The village is haunted by suicides amongst its young inhabitants, and Sara falls dangerously in love with one of the teenagers, Jamie, while Dave, as the town’s new policeman, tries to stop the mysterious chain of suicides. The film is an uncompromising story focused on the relationship between vulnerable teenagers and their parents, who are left in the dark.

Chinese Screens Haunted by Phantom of the Theatre

$
0
0

Yeah, we know its title implies that it’s yet another Phantom of the Opera film adaptation, but in actuality, the Chinese film Phantom of the Theatre is a new and original story with little resemblance to Gaston Leroux’s novel.

Set in 18th century Shanghai, it’s about a theatre plagued by the malevolent spirits of a troupe killed in a fire. As far as we know, there isn’t a deformed opera singer in a white mask in sight. There also won’t be a horse that somehow found its way into the tunnels beneath the opera house (thanks, Joel Schumacher and Andrew Lloyd Webber).

It opened in third place on 29 April in China, taking a modest $7 million, which is far from spectacular but not a complete failure either.

Director Raymond Yip is no stranger to the horror genre, as he’s the chap who also bought us movies like Blood Stained Shoes and The House That Never Dies. Popular actress and media personality Ruby Lin stars in the lead role.

We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything about a Stateside release.

Demons Don’t Knock in This Second Trailer

The second trailer is here for Demons Don’t Knock, and all we can do is hope that they decide to soon because this one is looking pretty good.

Leah Perriam, Chloe Jones, Daniel Perriam, Lynda Milligan, Richard Ashmore, Brieanna Lumsden, and Lorna Kotlowski star. Daniel Perriam directs with contributing director Leah Perriam.

Demons Don’t Knock is a sophisticated, mind-bending psychological thriller/horror feature film shot in the beautiful and picturesque South Island of New Zealand in stunning 4K. One of the locations used is arguably one of the most haunted places in New Zealand: a hospital that housed soldiers from WWI suffering from shell shock.

Synopsis:
After a car crash in which her friend was killed, Natasha struggles with a rare seizure disorder and at times finds it difficult to distinguish the real from the unreal. She seeks help from a neurologist who turns out to be more than he first appears.

The Daywalker Chronicles Brings New Blood to Vampire/Werewolf Fiction

Toward the end of last month, a novel was released that promises to inject some new blood into the rather tired vampire and werewolf sub-genres.  Will The Daywalker Chronicles, Nancy Lopes’ debut, fulfill your darkest desires? Read on for more details and ordering info.

From the Press Release:
While most authors use their first novel to do nothing but simply test the literary waters, Canada’s Nancy A. Lopes is rapidly proving that a debut release also presents an opportunity to rival the bestsellers. In fact, Lopes is playing their game with gusto.

It’s all thanks to The Daywalker Chronicles from CreateSpace, which takes vampires and werewolves and mashes them up into something totally new and refreshing.

“My goal from the outset was to take all of the hallmarks of the fantasy genre that people cherish, yet provide them with something that isn’t just a regurgitated attempt at something already on the shelves. In short, my creation had to be entirely unique,” explains Lopes. “It was a bold task, especially in the areas of character development and constructing a landscape that truly stands on its own. It took a lot of work, but I’m thrilled with what I came up with!”

She continues, “The best thing is that this is just the very first volume in what I plan to be an extensive series of novels. The next one is currently on my writing table and due for release at some point this year. It’s amazing to have a part-time writing career that allows me to be boundless in terms of my imagination and creativity. As long as readers and fans keep demanding my work – I’ll be providing it!”

With the volume’s demand expected to increase, interested readers are urged to secure their copies as soon as possible.  You can order yours now from Amazon.

Synopsis:
26-year-old Ronan Adams, born admist an outbreak of vampires and werewolves, always knew that he was different. It wasn’t until one day that he learned how different he really was.

That’s the question a loyal group of haunt enthusiasts have been asking themselves since signing up for the engaging, multi-faceted, and completely unpredictable journey that has had them all plunging into the deepest depths of their own human psyches, all while piecing together the pieces of the Tension puzzle over the last few months.

For those who aren’t exactly sure just what The Tension Experience is, the OOA Institute isn’t prepared to fully lift the curtain quite yet, but we thought hearing from those who have already begun their journey towards Ascension might help those interested in deciding whether or not to participate. Stuff, The (Blu-ray)

The StuffStarring Michael Moriarty, Paul Sorvino, Garrett Morris, Andrea Marcovicci

Directed by Larry Cohen

Distributed by Arrow Video

There are a handful of filmmakers who excel at subversive cinema, though perhaps none have done it as succinctly and successfully as the legendary Larry Cohen. Over the course of his four decades making movies (Cohen hasn’t done anything since a 2006 “Masters of Horror” episode), he’s tackled blaxploitation, childbirth, the FBI, ambulance drivers, cults, and consumerism. His filmography is brimming with cult classics, but for my money one has long stood above the rest: The Stuff (1985). Cohen delivers a scathing indictment of the binge diet and bandwagon culture, skewering producers, marketers, and purchasers with equal aplomb. The script preys on mindless dolts who blindly accept what big corporations cajole them into buying, never once stopping to question whether or not what they’re buying is any good for them or the environment. Cohen’s picture is a prescient piece of filmmaking, perhaps more relevant today than ever before.

When a mysterious white goo begins to bubble up from within the Earth, an elderly mining worker makes the logical decision to scoop it up with his fingers and eat it. Lucky for him, the stuff tastes pretty good. Cut to an indeterminate time later and “The Stuff” is everywhere – billboards, commercials, huge store displays, and in every kitchen in America. Who wouldn’t want it? Tastes so great, less filling, and no calories! The declining ice cream industry, for one, doesn’t like it and they want to know the secret to The Stuff. Enter David “Mo” Rutherford (Michael Moriarty), a corporate saboteur hired by the ice cream industry to expose and destroy their new chief competitor. While Mo begins his quest to uncover the truth behind the enigmatic white substance, a young boy, Jason (Scott Bloom), gets a dose of reality himself during a late-night fridge raid. He watches in horror as a container of The Stuff moves about freely inside the fridge before settling back in to its pint-sized home. His family refuses to listen to his concerns, so he does the next best thing and trashes a store display touting The Stuff, screaming about its dangers to anyone who will listen.

Jason’s antics don’t win him any fans at home, but they do draw the attention of Mo, who through his own research has uncovered the same shocking truth – The Stuff is alive, possibly even self-aware, and it takes over people’s minds before slithering out of their bodies and leaving behind a shriveled husk. The two team up, joined by Nicole (Andrea Marcovicci), a former marketer for The Stuff, with plans to infiltrate the massive factory producing America’s latest obsession. Their mission causes the realization that more firepower is needed to combat the country’s latest craze, however, leading Mo to enlist Col. Spears (Paul Sorvino) and his troop of trigger-happy soldiers to put an end to The Stuff.

Where The Stuff succeeds is not only in its subversive qualities and objective view of American consumerism, but also in its ability to add scope and feel bigger than its limited budget might otherwise allow. Cohen does a fantastic job of making it seem like The Stuff has taken over the country, with massive billboards hanging in New York City, frequent adverts on TV, and mammoth store displays championing this new magic foodstuff. I love the commercials Cohen shot for the film, complete with flashy imagery and a catchy jingle (“Can’t get enough of that wonderful Stuff!”) you’ll be singing long after the credits have rolled. Similar to the effectiveness of faux advertising in Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop (1987), the marketing seen in The Stuff greatly adds to the immersion necessary to make it seem like this new product really has taken the country by storm. The verisimilitude of this approach is scary accurate.

Cohen has brought along his good luck charm, too: Michael Moriarty. This was the second of their five collaborations. Moriarty is a unique actor, a method actor, and he can always be counted on to deliver a memorable performance. I haven’t always found him to be the strongest actor in any given room, but he adds little touches to his characters to ensure his work is, at the very least, noteworthy. Here, as Mo Rutherford, Moriarty plays the role with a cocksure swagger and even keel, coolly getting himself out of a host of sticky situations by using his head.

Less impressive is Scott Bloom, as young Jason. I know that Cohen strives for realism in his pictures, often casting amateur and non-actors in appropriate roles but geez, this kid is the pits. I’ve always thought he was the weakest link in the leading role chain, though thankfully he isn’t as much of a major player.

In addition to adding a sense of scope, Cohen’s film also (mostly) succeeds in the FX department. Many of the effects showing the movement of The Stuff, how it slinks around the fridge or oozes out of a person’s mouth, have been done with a strong sense of realism. Even some of the obvious optical and projection effects work aren’t half bad… except that bit near the end when Moriarty is blasting away at it with a machinegun. The creative team clearly had high ambitions for what they could pull off with this viscous white goo, and a number of tried-and-true cinema techniques worked perfectly well in bringing the sentient slime to life.

Maybe I’m a little biased here, as I adjust my rose-tinted glasses, because The Stuff has been a favorite of mine for over twenty years. The themes and not-so-subtle subtext presented here are eerily relevant to the current climate. This might sound like total blasphemy but this is a film I could see being remade, with updates reflecting the “instant results” culture in which we live. Cohen’s film is a work of genius low-budget filmmaking, but there are clearly areas where the ambition wasn’t able to meet the execution. To sound less blasphemous, I’d recommend Cohen himself update it. Regardless, The Stuff is going to last a long time thanks to a shrewdly observational script that captures consumerism at its best (worst?). One thing is for sure: you just can’t get enough of that wonderful Stuff!

Fans of this film have likely owned it on at least a few formats – most notably Anchor Bay’s OOP DVD – but Arrow’s new Blu-ray is an unquestionable winner. Hardcore Stuff fans may have purchased Arrow’s UK release, of which this edition is a direct port. As such, expect to find the exact same 1.85:1 1080p picture, sourced from a new 2K scan of the original camera negative. The restoration is often remarkable, allowing for impressive clarity, bold colors, a virtually immaculate print, and shockingly seamless effects work – optical effects are less inconspicuous, but matte work looks solid. There is some minor damage to the right side of the frame during a couple scenes, nothing major. The strong definition even extends to nighttime scenes, where the image holds up reasonably well in dim lighting.

Although the included audio here is a relatively simple English LPCM uncompressed 1.0 mono track, the sound is pretty damn good. The track is clean and free from hisses or pops. Sound effects and score have an equal weight, with dialogue registering nicely in the mix. There are a few decently powerful moments, giving the track a greater presence than expected from single-channel mono. The score, composed by Anthony Guefen, is an odd one that sounds like it would be more at home in a superhero movie than what is ostensibly a horror movie. Subtitles are included in English SDH.

“Can’t Get Enough of The Stuff” – Larry Cohen commands the majority of this in-depth making-of piece, which covers all aspects of the production. This was a feature fully under Cohen’s control – and everyone including Cohen will attest he was very much in control. The man was a taskmaster on set but nobody will disagree with the results of his intense direction. This is pretty comprehensive and very much worth the watch.

“Darren Bousman Trailer Commentary” – Bousman, himself a horror director, is a big fan of the film and he delivers a short commentary on its trailer. Cool?

The film’s original trailer is also included.

And if you own the old OOP Anchor Bay DVD, hang on to it because this disc does not include Larry Cohen’s commentary found there.
