Mystery of The Garlock Incident Slowly Begins to Unravel

0

Mystery of The Garlock Incident Slowly Begins to UnravelFilmmaker Evan J. Cholfin, along with his wife and producing partner, Ariana Farina, has devised a clever way to promote their upcoming film, The Garlock Incident. They're taking the mystery online and letting the fans have the first crack at piecing it together.

Using social media, Cholfin (who wrote and directed The Garlock Incident) and Farina have built an entire fictitious world created on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr based around the disappearance of a group of filmmakers shooting in a Western ghost town. With video postings and clues to the case on these different sites, the creators of The Garlock Incident have basically presented a prologue for their film, piquing the interest of potential audience members before the movie is even released.

In true Blair Witch fashion, nowhere on these sites is there any mention of a film, giving everything a very real tone. There is a ton of information already posted on the sites and more coming in all the time. The newest video is posted below.

The best way to learn about it is to dive right into the sites. For more "like" the Families in Search Facebook page, visit the official Families in Search website and follow Families in Search on Twitter (@FamsInSearch).

Again, note the realism of the sites and keep in mind they're all to promote The Garlock Incident film. Nicely done, folks. Very realistic.

Guillermo del Toro Looking to Check in with The Bloody Benders

Guillermo del Toro Looking to Check in with The Bloody BendersYou can add another project to the overflowing plate of deliciousness that is the workload of visionary director Guillermo del Toro. This one a tale of love, murder, and madness. Read on!

According to Deadline, Guillermo del Toro's Necropia Entertainment and Angryfilms’ Susan Montford and Don Murphy are teaming to option The Bloody Benders, a spec script by Adam Robitel. The scribe, a protege of Bryan Singer, based his script on the true story of the Benders, a husband, wife, son, and daughter who ran a hotel in Kansas on the outskirts of the prairie in 1873.

The place may have been a precursor for the Bates Motel: As many as 20 guests checked in and never checked out. The guests were robbed and murdered by their hosts, and the killers were never punished. ”It is a beautiful and brutal yet poetic story, based on a very famous case,” del Toro tells the site. “If you consider America back then, it was a great transition to modernity, but on the prairie, these were huge landscapes where people traveled and days and weeks on end would pass without communication. So nothing happens, then there is this brutal murder, and then it’s back to pastoral peace and quiet. That rhythm was very attractive to me.”

He continues, “The time was so lax back then that the sheriff would show up and say, ‘What is that odor coming through the vent that smells like decomposing flesh?’ and the Benders said they didn’t know. And the sheriff said, ‘Would you mind if I take a look…tomorrow?’ Nobody was in a hurry, and that is a big reason why they got away with it.”

del Toro will work on a polish with Robitel but feels he and his partners will want to move quickly to set a director and not wait for him so look for more on this one hopefully soon!

UPDATED: Universal Sues The Asylum: 'You Sunk our Battleship!'

0
0

Just how worried are the execs at Universal that their mega budget Battleship movie might sink at the box office? Apparently they’re worried enough that they’ve actually filed a lawsuit against The Asylum over its American Battleship mockbuster.

I remember writing an article years ago after The Asylum announced their When a Killer Calls mockbuster, stunned they weren’t being sued into oblivion since the film was damn near the exact same movie as the remake of When a Stranger Calls with only a single word in the title changed. I also remember being stunned that producing movies titled Universal Soldiers and The Terminators didn’t result in major lawsuits. I believe the producers of the big screen movies mockbusted by The Asylum via Snakes on a Train and The Day the Earth Stopped flirted with similar lawsuits, and there have been other rumblings of possible legal action over the years, but this is, as far I can recall, the biggest legal incident to date, certainly the most public.

TMZ reports that Universal Pictures has filed a lawsuit against The Asylum for “unspecified damages” (i.e., big bucks) claiming their American Battleship (hitting DVD/VOD May 22nd, four days after Battleship opens on US movie screens) is “stepping all over its business”.

Honestly, if The Asylum could ever produce a mockbuster that legitimately cut into the profit margin of a $200 million studio blockbuster, they probably would no longer need to be in the business of producing mockbusters.

TMZ: According to the lawsuit, Universal spent $100 million producing its film ... and $30 million promoting it in the U.S. alone -- and Asylum's trying to piggy back on its hard work.

I’m going to assume that $100 million is just the portion of the budget Universal sunk into the movie because by all previously reported accounts the Battlefield budget is upwards of $200 million.

Can’t really blame the Universal execs for being nervous. Even though Battleship has already been released internationally and grossed over $100 million worldwide, they need this film to be a huge hit domestically, and the buzz has been bad pretty much from the moment it was announced. You know they have to be feeling jittery over this one after Disney whacked the head of its movie division in the wake of the John Carter fiasco, and that guy didn’t even greenlight the movie!

It’ll be interesting to see if anything actually comes of this lawsuit. Will there be an injunction against the release of American Battleship? Will The Asylum lose millions in a lawsuit? Or will it fizzle out as seems to have been the case with previous Asylum legal wrangling.

Personally, I say the best way to settle this is with a pay-per-view boxing match between Battleship star Liam Neeson and American Battleship star Carl Weathers.

I wonder if the execs at Universal are aware that the day after Battleship opens in American theaters, American Battleship is slated to premiere at 9/8 Central on Syfy, a network owned and operated by NBCUniversal, the parent company of Universal Pictures?

Will they also sue themselves?

UPDATE
Deadline has done a story on the Asylum/Universal lawsuit, even printing a copy of the 54-page copyright infringement and false advertising lawsuit Universal filed.

Turns out in addition to compensatory damages, Universal also "wants the court to stop all Stateside distribution of American Battleship with an injunction and all American Battleship DVDs, posters, trailers and everything else seemingly related to the movie destroyed." That just makes the fact that the movie is slated to air on Universal's own Syfy the day after the film premieres all the funnier. Syfy must be destroyed is how I prefer to interpret it.

The Global Asylum issued a defiant reply to Deadline regarding the merits of Universal's lawsuit.

“The Global Asylum has promoted the feature film American Battleship for nearly a year while Universal raised no concerns. The timing of Universal’s recently filed lawsuit coincides with mixed reviews of its big-budget film Battleship — the first movie based on a board game since Clue. Looking for a scapegoat, or more publicity, for its pending box-office disaster, the executives at Universal filed this lawsuit in fear of a repeat of the box office flop John Carter of Mars. The Universal action is wholly without merit, and we will vigorously defend their claims in Court. Nonetheless, we appreciate the publicity.”

A lot of that response sounds an awful lot like what I wrote in the article above. I think someone at The Asylum just ripped off my talking points and issued it as a press release. Dammit, now I'm going to sue them!

Kick Off the Weekend with a New Clip from Chernobyl Diaries

Warner Bros. has provided a new clip from the upcoming Chernobyl Diaries that lays out a bit more of the groundwork for how our intrepid adventurers wound up there in the first place. Then it morphs into a trailer containing some new footage that is rather chilling indeed.

Chernobyl Diaries, an original story by Paranormal Activity mastermind Peli, is set in the city of Prypiat, which once housed the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. It's written by Peli, Carey Van Dyke, and Shane Van Dyke and directed by Brad Parker.

Production took place in September and October 2011 in Eastern Europe with Peli and Brian Witten (Dark City) producing. Alcon Entertainment's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are exec producers. It was financed and sold internationally by FilmNation Entertainment, and Warner Bros. will be releasing it on May 25th (Memorial Day weekend).

Synopsis:
Chernobyl Diaries follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an "extreme tour" guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon find themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone...

Mike Flanagan's Oculus Gearing up for Production

0
0

It's always interesting to see bigger outlets like Variety reporting stories about horror movies that we reported on over a year ago as if the news were well ... new.

In any event ... Variety just broke the news that Absentia director Mike Flanagan will direct the feature length version of his short film, Oculus. The real news story isn't that. It's the production finally having an idea of when they will begin ... for the record it's late summer of 2012 for Intrepid.

An expansion of the award-winning short film by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Seidman, Oculus will tell the story of Tim and Kylie Russel, siblings reunited for the first time since a brutal murder-suicide shattered their family and their childhoods.

Institutionalized for most of his life, Tim has come to terms with the tragedy that befell his parents, but Kylie is convinced that the strange, ornate mirror that hung in her father's study had a supernatural influence over the violent events. Now she's tracked the mirror down to an auction house basement and is determined to prove the truth about its powers both to her brother and to the world. As she does, the past bleeds into the present, the ghosts of their childhood are awakened, and they must confront the truth about their shared past at the risk of their sanity...or maybe even their lives.

Check out the short below.

Julianne Moore Offered the Part of Carrie's Mom; Will the Remake Have Found Footage Elements?

Julianne Moore Offered the Part of Carrie's Mom; Will the Remake Have Found Footage Elements?A couple of stories are floating around the Net having to do with the upcoming remake of Carrie. One involves the actress MGM is zeroing in on to play Carrie's religious fanatic mother, and the other implies that we could be looking at, at least partially, a found footage film.

First up, Deadline reports that MGM has formally offered Julianne Moore the role of Margaret White in the Kimberly Peirce-directed remake. They've apparently sent her the script and a pay or play offer. We approve wholeheartedly!

Now, as for the other item, on Dreadit, The Horror Reddit, a University of Denver student wrote:

CEO of MGM, Roger Birnbaum, came and spoke at my university today. Just letting you all in on what was said about the Carrie and Poltergeist remakes, which MGM is producing.

Carrie, as you all likely know, is being made and has already cast Chloe Moretz (Let Me In) as Carrie. Its intention is to go back and make it more similar to Stephen King's novel. Also, this wasn't entirely clear, but Birnbaum made it sound like it's going to be a "found footage" type of film. The film is going to have interviews with the survivors of the prom incident, and focus on that take.

As someone else posted in the comments section (and we agree): If they could come up with the correct mix of "found footage" and "regular movie", it could be really good. Pretty much the whole book was anecdotes, with chapters of regular story in between.

As for Poltergeist, click here to read more about that.

UPDATED: Sam Raimi Circling Poltergeist Remake?

0
0

Well, here's some completely unexpected and, dare we say it, pretty bitchin' news. We here at Dread Central are just as annoyed as you are when it comes to needless remakes. However, put someone of the caliber of say, oh, Sam Raimi, at the helm of one? Yes, you have now gotten our full and eager attention.

Recently CEO of MGM, Roger Birnbaum, visited his alma mater, the University of Denver, to give talks to their film history and production classes and apparently let slip a few vague nuggets about several of his studio's higher profile remakes.

On Dreadit, The Horror Reddit, a University of Denver student wrote:

CEO of MGM, Roger Birnbaum, came and spoke at my university today. Just letting you all in on what was said about the Carrie (more here) and Poltergeist remakes, which MGM is producing...

...Poltergeist was mentioned. Not much was said other than they're supposedly in discussion with Sam Raimi to direct it.

The Poltergeist reimagining originally had Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) attached to direct, but then money woes at MGM slowed everything down to a grinding halt on the flick.

Interesting, eh? Tell us what you think below.

UPDATE
Well, here's a kick in the nuts! THR provided an “official” update reporting that Raimi will not direct but instead will produce the redo with Nathan Kahane and Roy Lee. David Lindsay-Abaire, who worked on Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful for Raimi, is still working on the script. We were so happy just an hour ago.

Official - Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris Both Back for Hatchet 3

0
0

Okay, so it's not exactly a big surprise, but you never know what could happen in the world of movie making. In any event... once again two horror icons are set to go one-on-one in a very haunted swamp!

From the Press Release
Dark Sky Films and Ariescope Pictures are pleased to announce that Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris have joined the cast of HATCHET 3, the next exciting chapter in the horror saga of swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley, which will be written and produced by Adam Green and directed by BJ McDonnell.

Kane Hodder portrayed the evil Crowley in 2006’s original Hatchet and continued in the role in Hatchet II. In that 2010 hit, Danielle Harris took over the role of Marybeth, the young woman who, at the movie’s climax, managed to escape Crowley’s clutches (and, apparently, kill him). The new movie continues where Hatchet II left off, as a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

Victor Crowley is the second modern horror icon played by Kane Hodder; he was the masked slasher Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th movies. Danielle Harris started her career as a child actress in Halloween 4 and starred in that series’ reboot as well as such shockers as Stake Land and Left for Dead.

HATCHET 3 is a production of ArieScope Pictures and Dark Sky Films, which will release the film in 2013.

The movie is written and executive produced by series creator Adam Green, who also directed the first two films in the series. Veteran camera operator BJ McDonnell (Halloween 1&2, Battle Los Angeles, Hatchet II) makes his directing debut on HATCHET 3.

Additional cast members will be announced shortly.

Exclusive: Producers of Award-Winning Elm Street Documentary Announce Definitive New Friday the 13th Retrospective

0
0

We've just gotten word that the documentary Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of ‘Friday the 13th’ began filming on April 24th in Los Angeles, New York, Connecticut and Vancouver.

Inspired by author Peter M. Bracke’s bestselling book, this comprehensive retrospective from Panic Productions and Hutson Ranch Media promises to be the definitive look at the making of the iconic horror franchise.

From its inception in 1980, the Friday the 13th film series has proven to be as unstoppable at the box office as its hockey-masked, machete-wielding villain Jason Voorhees, who has terrorized the fictional town of Crystal Lake for more than 30 years. Since then, Friday the 13th has become a true multimedia juggernaut, having spawned twelve feature films, a syndicated television drama, and an extensive line of merchandise and collectibles. What’s more, revenue figures are as staggering as they are relentless: over 95 million tickets sold and nearly $600 million in domestic box office receipts alone.

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of ‘Friday the 13th’ promises to give horror fans a unique insider’s look into the iconic horror series, featuring over 100 interviews with cast and crew spanning all twelve films and the television series, many of whom have never before publicly discussed their involvement in the long-running franchise. The documentary is written and directed by Daniel Farrands and produced by Thommy Hutson, who previously combined forces on the most acclaimed horror franchise documentary ever made, 2010’s Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, an epic four-hour journey that chronicled the making of director Wes Craven’s seminal 1984 shocker and its seven sequels. Independently produced, financed, and released by Farrands and Hutson, Never Sleep Again won the The Academy of Science Fiction and Horror’s prestigious Saturn Award in 2010 for “Best DVD Release” as well as two Home Media Magazine Reaper Awards for “Best Direct-to-Video Release” and “Best of Show.”

"Never Sleep Again is widely-regarded as the definitive retrospective on Freddy Krueger and the eight Nightmare on Elm Street films so we thought it only fitting that Jason, who has appeared in twelve films, be given his due," says writer/director Daniel Farrands, who previously served as editor and co-publisher of the groundbreaking book which inspired the new documentary and produced Paramount Home Entertainment’s Deluxe Edition DVD releases of the Friday the 13th films. A veteran of the horror genre, Farrands wrote the screenplay for Dimension Films’ Halloween 6 and produced Lionsgate’s hit supernatural thriller The Haunting in Connecticut, which grossed $80 million at the box office worldwide. "I literally grew up on the Friday the 13th films,” says Farrands, “and in a very real way the series is responsible for my career in the film industry. It is truly an honor to chronicle the history of the series in a comprehensive documentary that I hope will serve as a worthy companion piece to the films and satisfy the series’ loyal fans.

Producer Thommy Hutson, who, in addition to Never Sleep Again, also wrote and produced definitive documentaries on Scream and The Return of the Living Dead, agrees. “After exploring the success and making of nightmares, ghost-faced killers, and wise-cracking zombies, the time felt right to document the rise of one of the most well-known, feared, and loved villains of our generation,” he says. “I am thrilled to be part of a project that will undoubtedly be the definitive story of not just Jason Voorhees but the film franchise that created him. It’s a campfire tale long overdue.

Upon its original release as a collectible hardcover edition in October 2005, Crystal Lake Memories was instantly hailed as one of the most lavish, comprehensive, and meticulously researched books ever created about a film series. Author Peter M. Bracke crafted a narrative as full of shocks and surprises as the films themselves, painting a graphically compelling picture of one of horror’s most enduring franchises. In April 2012 an all-new and fully expanded eBook edition of Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of ‘Friday the 13th’ was released to the iBooks, Kindle, and Nook platforms. “As a life-long fan of Friday the 13th, it was a dream come true to document the series with the original hardcover and electronic versions of Crystal Lake Memories,” says Bracke. “So I am absolutely thrilled that the team behind Never Sleep Again has decided to tackle all things Jason and Friday the 13th. It is simply an amazing honor to be a part of this ‘visual companion piece’ to Crystal Lake Memories, and I can't wait to see it!

The documentary Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of ‘Friday the 13th’ is slated for a late 2012 release.

Jacob Cooney is back with another volume of his "perpetual script series" known as Zombie Fiesta, which chronicles a group of survivors fighting to stay alive in a world overrun by the undead.

This second volume contains the third and fourth installments in Cooney's ongoing short film series: "Zombie Fiesta 3: With a Vengeance" and "Zombie Fiesta 4: The Doppelganger Prophecy".

Here's what the author told us:

"Stay tuned for more Zombie Fiesta volumes as I personally continue to battle the endless rotation of writer’s block. Part 5 and 6 of the series are already rolling around in my head... but first I need to finish some other projects that have deadlines..."

Zombie Fiesta is only available as an eBook through Amazon, and in case you missed it, you can also download the first installment containing the first two short film scripts written in the series: "Zombie Fiesta: Day Zero" and "Zombie Fiesta 2: Cruise Control".

In 1985 Stuart Gordon directed his first feature film and created a sensation. It was H.P. Lovecraft’s Re-Animator, a smashing popular success produced by Brian Yuzna that delivered as many laughs as it did screams, making it a cult classic among horror fans and winning a Critic’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Last year Gordon, his co-writers Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris, and composer/lyricist Mark Nutter turned Re-Animator into a musical for the stage, playing to rave reviews and standing ovations for a sold-out six-month run.

And the original cast is back! George Wendt, best known as the affable Norm from "Cheers", plays the Dean of the Medical School whom West transforms into a mindless zombie. Chris L. McKenna, the star of Gordon’s neo-noir thriller King of the Ants, is Dan Cain, Herbert’s hapless roommate who finds himself drawn into the mayhem. And operatic Jesse Merlin, who played the President of the United States in the long-running The Beastly Bombing, is Dr. Carl Hill, who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter (Rachel Avery) only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. But thanks to the glowing re-agent, Dr. Hill is still able to take his curtain call with his head tucked underneath his arm. Rounding out the cast (in alphabetical order) are Mark Beltzman, Cynthia Carle, Brian Gillespie, Marlon Grace, and Liesel Hanson, featuring Graham Skipper as Herbert West.

Special effects are being done by the same guys who did them for the 1985 movie: Tony Doublin, John Naulin, and John Buechler, joined by Greg McDougal and Tom Devlin. And the blood will flow so freely that the first few rows will be designated as a “splash zone.” They also just won an LA Drama Critics Circle Award for their amazing work on Re-Animator the Musical.

Laura Fine Hawkes will provide the creepy sets, Joe Kucharski the moldering costumes, and Jeff Ravitz the cadaverous lighting. Stage managing the madness is the unflappable Mike Lemek.

B-Sides: Hands Off Jim Carrey, He Belongs to Me

Twenty years before Twilight there was another teen movie built around a love triangle involving a vampire and a non-vampire fighting over a naive virgin. It was called Once Bitten and starred a newcomer named Jim Carrey. Unlike Twilight it was a comedy on purpose.

A young pre-Ace Ventura, pre-“In Living Color” Jim Carrey starred as a teenage virgin pursued by an aging vamp played by Lauren Hutton who desperately needs to the suck the blood from the inner thigh of a male virgin in order to maintain her eternal youth. This doesn’t sit well with his chaste girlfriend (Karen Kopins).

Given how popular tweener vampire tales are and how the notion of “cougars” has become a part of the pop culture lexicon, it really is kind of amazing that a remake of Once Bitten hasn’t already come to fruition.

Maria Vidal was something of a one-hit wonder back in the 80’s, charting with the theme song to the Lorenzo Lamas dance flick Body Rock - another B-Sides for another day. Vidal would go on to write songs for an eclectic mix of performers including Ace of Base, Belinda Carlisle, Reggaeton, and Tupac Shakur. She contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Once Bitten, one of which would become quite memorable thanks to the scene in which it was showcased.

The highlight of the 1985 comedy is a scene at a Halloween dance in which Hutton and Kopins engage in a what can only be described as a dance fight (and not of the You Got Served variety) over Carrey set to the highly appropriate tune “Hands Off”.

Here’s the song and that very scene from the underrated 1985 vampire comedy Once Bitten.
