Lionsgate Cuts to the Marrowbone

More Latino-flavored spookery is headed our way as Variety is reporting that Lionsgate International has closed over 30 territory deals – 50-plus territories breaking out Latin America – on psychological thriller Marrowbone, exec produced by J.A. Bayona, and the directorial debut of Sergio G. Sanchez, his scribe on The Orphanage and co-writer on The Impossible.

Part of Lionsgate Intl.’s diverse Cannes lineup, which includes tentpoles and star-driven movies, Marrowbone’s 10-week English-language shoot is scheduled from June in Northern Spain’s Asturias, Sanchez’s home region, and the Barcelona suburb of Terrasa.

Marrowbone tells the tale of a 20-year-old who, with his three younger siblings, is plagued by a sinister presence in the manor where they live. To stay together, they have kept secret the death of their beloved mother.

We’re absolutely thrilled with Lionsgate’s work on Marrowbone,” said Barrois, Telecinco Cinema CEO, describing Marrowbone as “The Orphanage meets The Others.

He added: “The protagonists of Marrowbone are mainly children, like in these films. For us, as Mediaset España’s CEO Paolo Vasile pointed out, Marrowbone is part of an important lineage. Guillermo del Toro godfathered Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Orphanage, and now Juan Antonio is godfathering Sergio’s debut. We hope Sergio will play the same role in the future.

More on this one as it comes.

Frightgeist Launches with a Finale

Another player in the horror game is getting set to lay its cards down as Screen Daily is reporting that Danish producer/director Søren Juul Petersen and editor/producer Jacob Kondrup are launching production company Frightgeist with their first feature, Finale, based on the award-winning novel Alt Det Hun Ville Ønske Hun Ikke Forstod by the Danish horror novelist Steen Langstrup.

The film, in post-production for delivery in July, is financed mainly by the Danish Film Institute. Scanbox Entertainment has Nordic rights. The film shot in Denmark and Germany with some dialogue in English and German.

The producers say it is one of the first “high concept, smart horror” films from Denmark, “standing on the shoulders of the Scandinavian noir tradition of intense drama with three-dimensional characters.

Juul Petersen said: “On the surface Finale is about two girls and their nightshift during the night of a big sports final. But deeper down it deals with the boundaries of modern entertainment, the morbid curiosity of the human mind, and the discovery of ‘The Dark Web.’  Steen Langstrup’s award-winning novel is really the star of this film with its clever structure where layers are peeled off as the story progresses.

The story is set on a night when everyone in the country is watching a big sports final on TV. At a small gas station in a remote area of Denmark, two young women are working when they encounter some unique customers.

Juul Petersen makes his feature directorial debut after 15 years of producing.

Damien Canceled by A&E – No More Antichrist on TV

While his followers were willing to “do it all” for “Damien,” A&E apparently is not as the network has canceled the show.  Given how the series steadily improved week to week during Season 1, we were really hoping for a second season; but alas, per showrunner/exec producer Glen Mazzara on Twitter, it wasn’t meant to be.

Damn it!  Unfortunately, it seems not enough of us were watching…

About “Damien”:
“Damien” follows the adult life of Damien Thorn, the mysterious child from the 1976 horror film The Omen, who has grown up seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Haunted by his past, Damien must now come to terms with his true destiny — that he is the Antichrist. The saga begins when Damien, an acclaimed war photographer, returns home to New York after experiencing a traumatic event while on assignment in Syria. Strange occurrences and flashbacks plague him, and he is then forced to confront his true identity.

“Damien” stars Bradley James (“Merlin,” “Homeland”) along with Oscar® nominee Barbara Hershey (“Once Upon a Time”), Omid Abtahi (“Better Call Saul”), Megalyn E.K. (“House of Lies”), Scott Wilson (“The Walking Dead”), David Meunier (“Justified”), and Robin Weigert (“Sons of Anarchy”).

“Damien” is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios for A&E Network. Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead,” “The Shield”) serves as writer and executive producer via his 44 Strong Productions. Ross Fineman, who developed the project alongside Mazzara, executive produces through his company, Fineman Entertainment. Pancho Mansfield also serves as executive producer.

Magical Girl Apocalypse – Vols. 1-7 (Manga Series)

$

Written by Kentaro SatoMagical Girl Apocalypse

Illustrated by Kentaro Sato

Published by Seven Seas Entertainment

Suitable for ages 16+

Since the dawn of anime and manga, magical girls have always been a staple. For only an innocent chibi has the power to wield magic in some way and save the universe! Two popular examples of magical girls are Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. It’s such a cliché that some series even challenge the typical magical girl trope, such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

If the title hasn’t already given it away, Magical Girl Apocalypse falls into the latter category. From the very first chapter in Volume One, Magical Girl Apocalypse takes what you may or may not know about magical girls and turns it on its head.

Magical Girl Apocalypse starts with main character Kii Kogami living his daily average life, going to school, and hating how boring it all is. His loathing doesn’t last long, however, since his life is forever changed within the first 15 pages of Magical Girl Apocalypse. A young girl in a strange outfit shows up at the entrance to his school, and when a teacher begins to question her, she obliterates his head with a mace. Kii convinces himself that what he’s seen wasn’t real and excuses himself to the restroom. It’s only after he returns to his classroom and finds all his classmates dead that he begins to realize something terrible is happening.

Thus begins Kii’s adventures in Magical Girl Apocalypse, as he continually escapes the magical girls with a varying cast of friends. The series has a Walking Dead style to it with the characters doing whatever they can to survive. They move from location to location to escape the oncoming magical girls. Beyond that, slowly but surely a grander plot begins to unfold as we discover—along with the characters—who is really behind this terrible apocalypse. Within the first seven volumes, a main villain is revealed, with someone even more sinister behind them. The plot continually evolves, making Magical Girl Apocalypse a literal page-turner. Not only are the plot and subplots of the manga exceedingly engaging, the pacing of it is on point. The lulls in action in Magical Girl Apocalypse never feel boring, but rather a resting period before shit hits the fan again. Climaxes and plot point reveals are masterfully spaced for the audience to continue gasping and wondering what will happen next.

The writing in Magical Girl Apocalypse is stellar. The characters and their dialogue are believable, no matter how off the wall they may be at times. Take for example a main character revealed at the very beginning of Volume Two. Akuta Rintarou is a demented police officer who has taken up residence in a shopping mall. When Kii and his current group discover Akuta, he has his pants down, dick exposed, with two naked women are sprawled out dead next to him. His introductory line is, “Woo-hoo!! It looks like there’s some sweet-ass, high school pussy here! Oh yeah!!” That is not a line that most manga could reasonably get away with, and yet, in Magical Girl Apocalypse, it works. Akuta is a relentless perv and usually only cares about himself, so the way he’s introduced sets that precedent.

The art in Magical Girl Apocalypse is worthy of merit, too. Much of the series consists of action scenes, and these are illustrated in a fast paced way without losing out on detail. All of the magical girls are completely different, and this is showcased often in the series. There are scenes where many girls are shown at once, and it’s easy to spot the familiar ones because of the attention to detail. As a side note, it will be interesting to see how many other magical girls are introduced as the series progresses. For now, gore is well-used. It’s deeply disturbing at times, such as one case where a magical girl takes over a child’s body. The magical girl’s head sits atop the kid’s, leaving the child’s face with a zombified look, tongue lolling and eyes rolled back in her head. This is also a great example of how well the character’s expressions are illustrated. The smallest of emotions are visible on their faces, which is no small feat.

All in all, Magical Girl Apocalypse really is a slam dunk of a title. It’s a sincere case of “Never judge a book by its cover” since the title and cover art really don’t give away the gold that waits inside. If you’re looking for a series that brings something entirely new, and in the best way possible, Magical Girl Apocalypse should meet or exceed your expectations. You’re in for a fantastically paced story, with strong dialogue that will keep you turning the pages until there are no more to turn. The evolving plot and discovery of multiple unlikely villains will keep you begging for more. And of course there’s also the twist on the typical magical girl that tickles just the right spot for manga/anime fans. If you liked Madoka Magica even just a little, you’ll love Magical Girl Apocalypse.

We’re pretty intrigued by SundanceTV’s upcoming “Cleverman” series, which debuts on June 1st; and if you are too, we have a sneak peek of Episode 1.01 to share along with a video extra and a pretty huge image gallery.

“Cleverman” is based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen: One young man – The Cleverman – struggles with his own power and the responsibility to unite a divided world, but he must first overcome a deep estrangement from his older brother.  Michael Miller is script producer, and writers are Michael Miller and Jon Bell.

“Cleverman” features a superb ensemble cast led by Scottish actor Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”), Golden Globe nominee Frances O’Connor (“The Missing”), Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Sapphires), Rob Collins (The Lion King), and Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games).

Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Septembers of Shiraz) is lead director, with acclaimed director, writer, actress, and performer Leah Purcell also directing.

Set in the near future, “Cleverman” is a smart, sexy, and startlingly original drama that sees a group of non-humans battling for survival in a world where humans feel increasingly inferior to them and want to silence, exploit, and kill them. Central to the drama is the story of two estranged Indigenous brothers who are forced together to fight for their own survival. Otherworldly creatures also emerge into this fragile and dangerous place in this action-packed new series.

Producers are Rosemary Blight and Lauren Edwards for Goalpost Pictures, Ryan Griffen, and Angela Littlejohn for Pukeko Pictures, with executive producers Sally Riley, Kylie du Fresne, Ben Grant, Martin Baynton, Adam Fratto, Jan David Frouman, and Amelie Kienlin.

Production Kicks Off on Habit in Manchester, UK

Habit, an upcoming contemporary psychological horror film from the UK, has started a four-week shoot in Manchester, and we have all the early details for you right here.

From the Press Release:
GrimmFest Director and producer Rachel Richardson Jones, on behalf of Habit Films, announces the Manchester set, Manchester produced, and Manchester cast Habit.  “This is our third film in as many years out of the Grimm Up North/Not a Number stable, and we are thrilled to be making it here at home in Manchester. This is one of the finest cities in the world, and although much of our industry is based in London, I am so excited to be making Habit here at home,” said Jones.

Adapted from the highly acclaimed novel by Stephen McGeagh, the film is to be directed by Jones’ Not a Number partner, Simeon Halligan. Halligan was drawn to the story five years ago, but with his other filming commitments and running Manchester’s Grimm Up North film festival, he explains, “There has been little time until now to focus all my attention on the screenplay, but I am thrilled that we are going to start filming soon.”

“Habit is a sensuous, dark underworld of a film, set and to be filmed in and around the Northern Quarter,” continues Halligan, “seeking out the back streets and the last vestiges of the way it used to be. Interiors will be shot in the Pie Factory studios at Media City, Salford, the hub of film, TV, and media.  We have cast and crewed from within Manchester where it’s been possible. We love this city and want Manchester to feel they can own the film, a real coming together of Manchester’s talent – both in front of and behind the camera. We have brought together an amazing pool of Manchester acting talent: Elliot James Langridge, Jessica Barden, William Ash, Roxanne Pallet, and Andrew Ellis.

Habit (Kickstarter campaign here) portrays a dark, troubled underbelly of Manchester, where the addicted prey on the weak and lost. Langridge plays Michael, one who is lost, sharing a flat with his mate Dig (Ellis), who rarely bothers to get dressed. Michael spends most of his days at the Job Centre until he meets Lee (Barden). Lee works at a massage parlour, and Michael goes along one night, only to witness the violent death of a ‘punter.’ The owner of the business offers Michael a job, and he accepts. As he experiences blood-drenched flashbacks, Michael feels himself being gradually sucked into a strange twilight world that he doesn’t understand but finds irresistibly attractive.
