My Night Job (Video Game)

My Night JobDeveloped by Webcore Games

Available on Steam and PlayStation 4 (reviewed)

Growing up in the early days of Atari, I couldn’t wait for games to evolve and look better. As an avid gamer, I watched the evolution of game engines and graphics grow up from Pong to Uncharted 4. That being said, there’s been a retro-gaming renaissance lately that has fielded a few okay homages to gaming’s golden years, but many (and there’s a shit-ton of them out there) have just missed the mark and helped flood said renaissance with all manner of pixelated nonsense.

I cannot tell you how sick of these games I am. That being said, give me horror-themed anything, and I’ll try it out. Little did I know that one of these small throwback games would become one of my favorites of the year. If you’re a horror fan, believe me when I say My Night Job is the Phantasm game you never knew existed.

The premise is very simple… throw in as many homages to horror movies as humanly possible without getting sued, and then create an arcade-style game whose only objective is to get the high score and populate it with them.

My Night Job

Save the victims; get power-ups. Yes! I’ll take a rabid nuke cat! Thanks!

You play as a balding pony-tailed hero who drives an ice cream truck by day and helps to exterminate all manner of nasties by night in a sprawling haunted mansion. All the while you’re saving victims who are strewn about the mansion by running into them (a la Zombies Ate My Neighbors) and having them follow you to an escape helipad. You can have an entourage of up to ten victims at a time, and usually once they’re saved, they’ll drop some item to help you save even more. The best part? There are special “victims” who look suspiciously like Chucky, the Tall Man complete with floating sphere, Sadako, and many, MANY more.

Where do you find them? What conditions must be met for them to show up? That’s for you to experiment and find out. Pro tip: Some of the victims have weaponry and will fight alongside of you. This is very common for the special victims discussed above. You may want to try to keep them as long as you can.

My Night Job

One of the many themed rooms. Poltergeist anyone?

As for the mansion… it’s broken down into multiple rooms that are all kept track of via a small map in the right-hand corner of the screen. If an area becomes too crowded with creatures, they begin to wreck it. Each room has health bars that go from green (healthy) to red (dead). You can still enter these rooms when they’re completely destroyed, but no more victims will spawn there. If four rooms are destroyed, the game is over so you’re gonna have to run from floor to floor at a breakneck pace to make sure you save the 100 required victims to win the game.

A lot of the rooms are also themed to famous horror flicks like Poltergeist, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Halloween; and each is riddled with weapons, some of which are special, like the chainsaw that, when the button is pressed to use it, makes your character do a very familiar spin that is sure to bring a smile to your face.

My Night Job

How about some Motel Hell – complete with severed pig head – action at the helipad!

In a nutshell, that’s all there is to it. Save 100 victims and keep the rooms in good shape, and you’re a Reggie Bannister-like hero who can take on creatures from any dimension. You’re hot as love, man, you know! Be warned… that’s a HELL of a lot harder than it sounds, but that’s the fun of it!

I cannot recommend this game enough… I just wish there was more of it! Here’s hoping it sells well (at less than $7.00, it should) and we’ll get some DLC or even a sequel. Bless you, Webcore Games, for doing retro right and for giving us all what is nothing short of a love letter to the horror genre.

My Night Job

Wait, is that a louver door with a jack-o-lantern in front of it complete with knife and knitting needle on one side of the room and a framed picture of the Tall Man on the other? Sure seems that way, and I love it!

Westworld Opens This Fall on HBO

It’s been a rocky road for HBO’s “Westworld,” but it finally sounds like things are back on track. According to Variety, HBO has slated the show for a fall premiere, following delays that temporarily halted production on the series earlier this year.

HBO shut down production of “Westworld” in January after the project fell behind schedule — previously having been slated to wrap production two months prior. Filming resumed three months later.

No specific premiere date has been set.

Production delays on “Westworld” were among a series of recent hitches in HBO’s scripted development that preceded this week’s departure of Michael Lombardo from his role as programming president of the network. Miniseries “Lewis & Clark,” from producers Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, and Edward Norton, suspended production in August and was put into redevelopment. HBO pulled the plug on drama series “Utopia” from David Fincher that same month and later scrapped plans for comedy “Brothers in Atlanta” from “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels, after it was previously given a series order.

This week HBO tapped development executive Casey Bloys to succeed Lombardo as programming president.

Based on the film by Michael Crichton, “Westworld” stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright in a dark drama about the dawn of artificial intelligence. The series hails from Bad Robot Productions, Jerry Weintraub Productions, and Kilter Films in association with Warner Bros. Television. Jonathan Nolan serves as executive producer, writer, and director on the project, with Lisa Joy writing and executive producing. J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, and Bryan Burk also executive produce.

More soon!

John Carpenter Talks Original Friday the 13th; “Doesn’t Rise Above its Cheapness”

There’s no denying that John Carpenter’s Halloween spawned countless imitators and played a massive part in kick-starting the slasher movement, so one would have to credit it for at least paving the way for Sean Cunningham’s equally iconic Friday the 13th – a film, as it turns out, that Carpenter isn’t a fan of.

Speaking with Bret Easton Ellis this week, Carpenter had some harsh words for the 1980 classic.

One springs from an organic idea and has a truly artist’s eye working,” he told the American Psycho author, when asked to compare The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Friday the 13th. “And Friday the 13th, I feel, affects me as very cynical. It’s very cynical moviemaking. It just doesn’t rise above its cheapness.”

I think the reason that all these slasher movies came in the ’80s was a lot of folks said, ‘Look at that Halloween movie. It was made for peanuts, and look at the money it’s made! We can make money like that. That’s what the teenagers want to see,'” Carpenter continued. “So they just started making them, cranking them out… most of them were awful.”

Most ’80s slashers were indeed awful, so Carpenter totally has a point there.

What say you? Sound off underneath the smoky photo of the horror master!

After a handful of release date changes, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno was finally unleashed into Stateside theaters last year, and it made for a gruesome breath of fresh amid all the paranormal fare that is currently dominating the landscape of theatrical horror. Will we ever see a sequel? Indeed we will!

As reported by The Wrap this week, Roth is currently developing a follow-up to his Cannibal Holocaust-inspired flick, though the outlet provided no further details about the sequel. Last we heard a few years back, Nicolas Lopez would be directing the film, to be titled Beyond the Green Inferno, though it’s very possible those plans changed.

Stay tuned for more as we learn it!

In The Green Inferno, a group of student activists travel to South America on the trip of a lifetime to help save a tribe in danger of extinction. Disaster strikes when the plane they are traveling in crashes into the Amazon jungle and they are taken hostage by the natives that they had intended to protect. The group face a harrowing struggle to escape the tribe they’ve been brutally captured by, witnessing the ritualistic murders of their friends and eventually turning on each other in order to survive.

Outcast: A Beginner’s Guide

$
0
0

With all of the supernatural/horror/horror-lite/zombies-with-attitude TV shows coming out nowadays, it can be hard to pick out what’s actually worth your time. Whether or not you watch it, there’s no doubt that “The Walking Dead” started a major movement in horror television.

Procedural dramas like “Supernatural” and docu-dramas like “Ghost Hunters” used to be basically the only option. More and more we are treated to serial dramas like “Wayward Pines,” “American Horror Story,” and “Damien” (mentioned with the obligatory sad face :(). Even the classic procedural model has gotten a new spark of genius with shows like “iZombie” and the most recent season of “Supernatural.”

It can be a lot to keep up with. Even when a new show from the eternally incandescent mind of Robert Kirkman comes around, it can slide under the radar. Hell, let’s be real here; it’s fucking exhausting to keep up with everything you should know as a horror fan. So with Kirkman’s “Outcast” being made into a new series on Cinemax, I saw my opportunity to help. Without spoiling anything, here is what you should know about “Outcast” before it premieres on June 3rd.

Outcast

So far, Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” has proven itself to be more influential than some dictators, spawning two successful televisions shows, a talk show, multiple games, on top of being one of the highest rated continuing comic series. Love it or hate it, fans of the comic know that the show diverges from its source material, featuring similar set-pieces with significantly altered outcomes and cast. As time has gone on, the two have come closer together, but there were some serious creative diversions in the first few seasons.

If the first episode of “Outcast” is an indicator, it follows much closer to the comic series than “The Walking Dead” did. It’s hard to tell at this point, of course, but many of the scenes, shots, and conversations are direct transfers from panel to screen. There are minor changes in characterization and ordering of events, but basically everything you see in the first episode is from either the first or second issue of the comic.

Outcast

Though also based on a Kirkman comic series, don’t expect a repeat of “The Walking Dead.” “Outcast” is a totally different world with a very different feel. It isn’t a Battle Pope shift in tone, but Kyle Barnes’ fight against demons is a much more personal affair than Rick’s struggle to keep his group together. There are far fewer characters to keep track of, and interpersonal drama is much more focused. This is about Kyle and Reverend Anderson learning how to fight evil together.

To that end, “Outcast” takes the established concept of possession in a new direction. Just because they use the terms “demon” and “exorcisms,” don’t think this is more Christian fan-fiction. I actually hesitate to call them demons, but even Kyle hasn’t figured out a better term yet. And just because they are exorcising doesn’t mean white men in frocks are shouting incantations while a child bends her back painfully. There’s as much punching and biting as holy water and scripture. Demons aren’t interested in corrupting your soul or opening a hell portal. For them, it’s all a battle for survival.

Outcast

What we know so far is that Kyle is what is known as an “Outcast.” As to what that entails (or what they are outcasts from), not even the comic has revealed yet. What it means for Kyle is that demons have been fucking with him his whole life. Possession seems to follows those around him like the plague. For all the problems this causes, it also seems to give him some power to hurt and even destroy them. If all this sounds vague, it is. In the two years that the comic has been around, we’ve only gotten hints as to the grander schemes and specifics of the relationship between Outcasts and demons. This isn’t a “possession-of-the-week” procedural, and their trial and error approach leads to as many failures as successes. Snippets of the story begin to paint a larger picture, and there is a grand conspiracy to unravel, but don’t expect a shocking reveal or sweeping resolution to each episode.

If you’re anything like me, you hate getting into a series just to find out it got cancelled before any real resolution. It sucks to commit to up to twenty-some hours of content only to be left high and dry. Well, there’s good news on that front, since even before the premiere “Outcast” has been renewed for a second season. Does that actually surprise anyone? It’s a Kirkman production; the guy is basically golden. Since it seems like this series is much more under his control, you can bet it will follow the comic and try to tell the full story. However, unlike “The Walking Dead” and Invincible, it seems at this point like it’s all leading to a specific end. While “The Walking Dead” will go on as long as people are alive to act monstrously, “Outcast” is all leading up to something major. That doesn’t mean it will be short. Like I said before, we’re two years into the comic, and nowhere close to a finale.

So if you are looking for a bleak, depressing, and brutally violent take on possessions, “Outcast” will deliver. Don’t expect a lot of fun and frivolity. These are deeply flawed and troubled characters facing an uncompromising and sinister threat. It doesn’t kill off characters like “The Walking Dead,” instead crushing your hope that anything might turn out well. It’s visually stunning, and Patrick Fugit nails the quietly troubled, yet explosive Kyle Barnes.

Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until June 3rd to check out the first episode, “A Darkness Surrounds Him.” Watch it below courtesy of Cinemax:

As someone who has read the whole comic series, I have high hopes for the show. Seeing the demonic expulsion some to life was wonderfully disturbing, and the shot of the kid eating his finger was shocking even when I knew it was coming. Kirkman is in charge, and who better to make sure the IP is treated well? Look for the TV premiere on June 3rd, and stay tuned for our continuing coverage. I hope that I did my part to give you a bit of insight into the world of “Outcast.”

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Makeover

$

Zombies are everywhere nowadays. We see them on television with shows like The Walking Dead and iZombie, films like Resident Evil and Dawn of the Dead, and even in our Victorian satirical novels of manners. Well, that’s just Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Worldwide, we’re absolutely crazy about zombies and just can’t get enough of them. It would be remiss to say I myself haven’t fallen victim to the zombie fad. It certainly doesn’t hurt that I have a sister who is incredibly interested in the creation of special effects makeup. So when I was asked to participate in a zombie makeover to celebrate the home release of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I jumped at the chance.

Special effects makeup artist Mark Coulier was on hand for the event. He is most well known for his work in the Harry Potter series, X-Men, and The Mummy Returns. Not long after he arrived I was placed in a chair to begin the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies zombie building process. It was a matter of light experimenting to discover which prosthetic applications would fit my tiny face. I have half of my head shaved fairly short, and never did I think that would come in handy in any way. But on this day, Mark was incredibly excited by the prospect of having more room to work with. So, sorry mom and dad, but the style is here to stay! After Mark had laid out his plan of which pieces he wanted to apply where, he set upon his work like a bat out of hell.

When I was initially asked to do this Pride and Prejudice and Zombies makeover, I assumed the process must take hours. Mark quickly corrected me though by revealing that this should only take him around 45 minutes! Especially after my experience, and seeing how much detail was put into the work, I still can’t believe he finished that quickly. Most people see zombie makeup and focus on the prosthetic pieces. But in reality, there is so much more to it than that. The real star in my finalized makeup was actually the vein work put around the gorier pieces. The subtle purple/blue/green lines really sold the makeup and made it look real.

Being made up as a zombie is pretty easy on the part of the model. There were very slight things I noticed during the process other than simply the amount of time you have to sit still. One being, paint doesn’t feel very nice when you inhale it up your nose. It’s just a part of the gig, no avoiding it, but boy that stuff stings. Another, when your makeup artist tells you to close your eyes, you’ll want to do it. Thankfully Mark knows what he’s doing, and reminded me gently every time, so I never had to worry. But from the experience of poking myself with mascara and eyeliner at home, I can’t imagine what special effects paint feels like on the eye. Last little silly thing is that airbrushing tends to tickle. I noticed it most when Mark was painting near my ear and on my neck. It’s tough to sit still through that sometimes!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Makeover

On the part of the makeup artist, any special effects makeup is complicated. On a grand scale of special effects I’m sure zombies fall on the “easy” end of spectrum. However, easy definitely doesn’t mean uncomplicated. With my makeup there were three different prosthetics that had to be applied. There was one major bite wound on my scalp, another on my cheek, and one much smaller one on my neck. Applying these can be tricky because when they are created they have a frame around them that must be carefully removed. The pieces then must be blended into the skin with makeup.

Next comes painting. Mark delicately splattered paint of a few different colors onto my skin using a regular paint brush by pulling on the bristles and letting go. He also painted the interior of the prosthetics, since they are a flat light flesh color when created. This paint was to make the pieces match my skin color more appropriately, and to add the crusty, bloody effect we love to see in zombie wounds. There was of course also fake blood added to everything.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Makeover

The icing on the cake for my Pride and Prejudice and Zombies makeup was really the veins around everything that Mark had previously done. Blue, green, and purple combined to create the effect of infection spreading to the rest of my body. This was created with the combination of temporary tattoos, and airbrush painting. Mark mentioned that they used this technique on Voldemort in the Harry Potter series. It speeds up the process and helps aid with continuity by keeping every line exactly the same every time. Amazing how such a delicate visual touch can resonate with so many people. When I was showing off my zombie face later, I kept getting comments about the veins really being what sold the makeup.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Makeover

Speaking of showing off my zombie face, show it off I did. After I finished with Mark and the rest of the crew at the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies event, I decided that I had to go out with this makeup on. I was told that a woman who had gotten the makeup the day before elicited no reactions from people on the streets of L.A. So I was glad to know that I’d be trying out a different crowd. I was ready to go terrorize the citizens of Dread Central’s hometown, San Diego! Knowing I was benefiting from an event focused on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it seemed only right that my stately zombie face should imbibe in some wine. What else would a Pride and Prejudice zombie drink, right?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Makeover

Note my expertly poised pinky finger.

It was a fantastic experience to see people’s reactions when they saw the makeup. Those moments varied from squinted eyes, disbelieving looks, gasps, and lips curled in disgust. And I knew that if they were anything like me, they would want to touch it. There’s something bizarre about the human psyche, we just have to touch things we’re unfamiliar with. I can solidly report back from their experience, and my own, the makeup felt very much like real human skin. I shudder to think of it even now, gasp!

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my experience being transformed into a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies zombie. Please peruse the photos in this article at your leisure, and watch my human to zombie video transformation happen before your eyes! The latter half of the video is but a sampling of the reactions my horrid face received. Remember, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies releases on Blu-ray and DVD May 31st. So keep it in mind if you’re feeling the need for some more great looking zombies!

Welcome Back Anne Rice! Updates on Blood Paradise, Lestat Film, Wolves, Angels, and More!

Much beloved author Anne Rice has been battling some health issues over the past several months, which forced her to put Blood Paradise, the pending sequel to Prince Lestat (review), on hold; but per a few recent posts on her Facebook page, she seems to have turned a corner and has resumed writing.

Earlier this week, Rice posted the following update:

Anne here, dropping in to say good night. Today was almost like a normal day, pounding out over 27 pages in this new Lestat novel, wanting to know what is going to happen next. I’m still under the weather, recovering from the battle with Shingles and Bells Palsy, but I’m coming back. Lestat’s talking to me, and as always when he starts talking, he won’t stop. Christopher, my sublime son and fellow novelist, is visiting, working in his room downstairs as I party with the vampires up here in my little office. I’m so grateful to Chris for all his support during this recent illness, and to Becket for posting on the page, and to all of you for your many wonderful posts, comments, and stories you bring here to share. Love to all.

That was followed up yesterday by some even more encouraging news, plus an update on just about everything else she’s involved in:

Anne here. I am healing from my recent Shingles bout and catching up on work, with Lestat whispering and shouting at me day and night as I pound away on this new novel. The Prince is really struggling with being the Prince! Thanks for all your good wishes. I do hope to return eventually to Reuben and the wolves, but this Lestat book must be finished first. There is nothing new (officially) on the Lestat movie at Universal Studios. But the script is being written as the world knows by Josh Boone. I hope eventually to get back to my “Angel Time” books and produce a third. What do you guys think? When I finish this Lestat opus, do I return to the angels, or to the wolves? Or do I write something wholly new? I have too many new ideas! Ah, thank you, whatever gods may be, for the gift of life, for the gift of consciousness, for the gift of poetry, for the gift of imagination, for the gift of being a writer, for the gift of living in a world so filled with love and encouragement, for the gift of being able to work at the age of 74!

As always, she’s full of positivity and inspiration.  Get well soon, Anne; we anxiously await more adventures with Lestat and Co.

New Game Takes You on a Drug-Induced Trip to Hell

Man, this is one crazy looking game. Taking LSD is one thing, but taking LSD and battling hordes of demons from the bowls of Hell in a drug-induced state is something else.

The top-down shooter Overdosed – A Trip to Hell (Steam) has you doing exactly that. Don’t expect any drug rehabilitation clinics to help you kick the addiction; just try to keep your wits about you, and send those goddamn demons back to where they came from.

Overview:
Overdosed is a crazy fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled trip to remember! In this top-down shooter, the player is on an intense experimental form of LSD; and as a result they must battle against hordes of nightmarish creatures in randomly generated rogue-like adventures and arena-style levels. Basically run around with an Uzi in each hand wildly spewing bullets in all directions. Fun for all the family!

Influenced by the colorful craziness of Hotline Miami, Overdosed takes those run and gun elements and ramps up the intensity as you scramble looking for cash piles, ammo, and more drugs while defending yourself against many terrifying enemies.

Full Controller Support:
What’s a twin stick shooter without the ability to use twin sticks!? We have full controller support working in game and menus.

Game Modes:

ADVENTURE
This is the main rogue-like mode where the main goal is to progress through 5 randomly generated stages, each one with their own unique set of objectives to complete in order to progress. Every level will be different each time you play. Pick up ammo/cash/drugs at random locations, which you must hunt for if you want to survive!

Once you die, you go back to stage 1… however, you can come back stronger! Adventure features a hub area where you can spend the cash you find on new weapons, permanent upgrades, and ammo. So with each play-through you will punch that little bit harder!

Adventure also features bonus objectives which reward you for tasks like kicking enemies down a pit of death or defending a giant mound of coke. It’s a risk/reward situation where you can make a quick buck or lose it all and perish under a horde of enemies.

ARENA
As you start with just Dual Uzis, fight increasingly frantic waves of enemies and earn points to purchase additional weapons and gadgets within the level. There’s no order of unlocks so you can play it your way and spend your points however you like. Each wave gets harder than the last with more enemy numbers and the introduction of new enemy types.

Features Steam Leaderboards, Achievements, Trading Cards!

We have integrated a steam leaderboard system for the arena/adventure stats so you can compare and compete with others around the globe to see who can reach the highest wave or get the fastest times!

Composed by Andy Rohrmann (aka SCNTFC), the double-LP vinyl soundtrack is on sale now through the iam8bit online store for $35 USD.

Those who purchase the OXENFREE vinyl set will receive a download code for the digital album via email in early June (once mastering is complete), and the vinyl is expected to ship late September 2016. As with all new iam8bit music releases, the audio is mastered specifically for optimal vinyl audio quality. The 180-gram vinyl 2xLP is covered with the interpretive album art by Austin James. It features a holographic portal on the front cover and a die-cut portal on the back cover, enhanced by four interchangeable in-game environments printed on the interior vinyl sleeves.

On May 31, the OXENFREE New Game+ Mode content will be automatically updated to current Xbox One and Steam customers, which is timed with the much anticipated release of the game for the PlayStation 4 (PS4). Regression (2016)Starring Ethan Hawke, Emma Watson, David Thewlis, Lothaire Bluteau, Dale Dicky, David Dencik, Peter MacNeill, Devon Bostick, Aaron Ashmore

Directed by Alejandro Amenabar

When I sat down to watch this movie, I knew nothing about Regression. I had not read any reviews, nor had I even seen a trailer. The only bit of promotion I had seen was the poster artwork. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by how gripping the film is.

From the first frame I was hooked. The cinematography is amazing; partnering that with tremendous acting, Regression took me on a ride I enjoyed and didn’t want to get off of. Going in blindly, I was surprised to learn that the film was going to take the route that it did. I wasn’t aware it was going to look at satanic cults, and frankly, it intrigued me.

However, the film does have its flaws, and they are mostly in the third act, which is serviceable but could have been tightened up. The twist is given away much too quickly in my opinion, and honestly, it is a slight letdown. I stated above that I didn’t want Regression to end, and that is true; I just wish they would have gone in another direction. Even so, I cannot express enough how good the acting is; both Hawke and Watson deliver performances that are engrossing and engaging. You get sucked in while watching the two of them in action.

Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend Regression if you are looking for something a little bit different (it’s available now on Blu-ray/DVD from Anchor Bay, but the extras were unavailable for review). Seek this one out, and give it a watch. I look forward to seeing what comes next from these guys!
