Beware The Wicked One in New Trailer

It’s never a good thing to judge people solely by their names, but if you’re called The Wicked One, I think it’s safe to say that you’re not exactly Mother Teresa.

He’s the villain in an upcoming slasher film of the same name from director Tory Jones, which you can check out the new trailer for below.

The Wicked One is being produced by Studio 605 and is slated for a 2017 DVD release. The film is directed/written by Tory Jones and co-written with Cheyenne Gordon. It stars Katie Stewart, Jack Norman, Dale Miller, and Ari Lehman (Friday the 13th).

Synopsis:
A group of traveling friends return to their hometown for a weekend of festivities on Halloween at the annual event Wicked Fest. Upon arriving, they are quickly targeted by one of the most notorious and dangerous psychopaths in the world, whose crimes have earned him the moniker of The Wicked One.

Wailing, The (2016)

The WailingStarring Kwak Do-won, Kunimura Jun, Chun Woo-hee, Hwang Jung-min

Directed by Na Hong-jin

I can’t say I relate well to most Asian horror films – I prefer to see spooky stuff en Français if I’m going to be reading subtitles between the noggins of my fellow theater-goers – but there are some notable faves: A Tale of Two Sisters, Wishing Stairs, The Host, and I Saw the Devil.

The latest Korean supernatural smash is called The Wailing. It’s currently #1 one at the box office in Korea for two weeks in a row and will be released Stateside on June 3. Director Na Hong-jin’s opus clocks in at a mind-numbing two hours and forty minutes of nonsense centering on demonic possession.

The story is set in rural Korea, where there is just one small police station with no security and only a couple of bumbling, babbling officers who make the Keystone Cops look like Eliot Ness. Our hero – of sorts – is Jong-gu (Kwak Do-won), and we meet him just as he is summoned to the scene of a multiple homicide. Not a common occurrence in his jurisdiction, but it’s about to become all too familiar.

Speculation begins to spring up – who is the killer? There is a wild-man living in the forest known only as “The Jap” (Kunimura Jun) who’s been acting shifty. Maybe the homicidal rampages are because of toxic mushroom poisoning. Or could it be… SATAN?! Well, it’s going to take you almost three hours to find out.

While the epic tale of terror is beautifully shot – the Korean countryside and forest are simply stunning – that’s not enough to make The Wailing worth watching from start to finish in a theater.

For one thing the poorly cobbled English captions make the dialogue seem stilted. The acting is so over-the-top it’s reminiscent of the Silent Era. The demon’s obviously CGI’ed eyes take away from moments that are supposed to be chilling. There are some gross-out moments that feel like they were left on the cutting room floor of the 1990 Exorcist spoof Repossessed. The Wailing is so long and rambling that it’s hard to stay focused on the already unwieldy narrative, so that by the time the end comes, the audience may feel like wailing themselves.

Or maybe that’s just me. Hey, a lot of people like this movie and it is numero uno in its native Korea. It’s not all bad. As I said, the cinematography is gorgeous, effectively capturing the vividness and atmosphere of the setting. The hero is oddly watchable – while he is a dunce, there is something compelling and even a little lovable about Jong-gu. The Wailing may better lend itself to home viewing.

If you’re one of the exceedingly few people who own a PS Vita and are looking for something on the handheld console to scare you rigid, then check out Yomawari: Night Alone, which arrives on October 25th… just in time for Halloween.

Released in Japan last year, there’s a post from the developers over on the PS Blog which details how, despite its cutesy anime art-style, Yomawari will be giving nightmares to even the most hardcore horror gamers.

Synopsis:
A young girl is walking her dog Poro around town at dusk when a tragic accident forces her to return home with only Poro’s leash in hand. The girl’s sister commands her to stay home while she goes out into the night to search for the dog. Time passes. Growing impatient, the girl decides to search for her missing sister and dog herself.

But when she steps foot outside, she realizes that this is not the same town. The darkness has made the town unfamiliar, and she appears to be utterly alone… save for the spirits that stalk her. The girl must hide from, outsmart, or outrun the hunting spirits while she searches for clues to find her loved ones.

UFO Over Ohio Airbase? You Decide in The Gasp Menagerie

Another unidentified flying object was captured on film close to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, a hotbed of UFO reports since the end of World War II.

The video was shot by a Dayton, Ohio, couple who were filming the sunset from their home. It just so happens that said couple run a YouTube Channel entitled Secure Team, which specializes in strange phenomenon, so make of that what you will. It doesn’t change the fact that this object was witnessed by multiple sources, and truth be told… I’ll be damned if I can figure out what it is!

Judge for yourself below, and sound off in the comments section.

Explore The Gasp Menagerie!

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in the Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. As always, I can be found at mrdark@dreadcentral.com. Now get out there, find some weird, and let’s get this party started.

Without Dan Aykroyd, Ghostbusters simply does not exist, so the actor is needless to say a big time hero in the world of nerd culture. In addition to co-writing, he of course played Ray Stantz in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2, and he’s now playing the role of critic courtesy of a glowing mini-review of Paul Feig’s reboot.

Per Aykroyd’s official Facebook page

As originator of the original: Saw test screening of new movie. Apart from brilliant, genuine performances from the cast both female and male, it has more laughs and more scares than the first 2 films plus Bill Murray is in it! As one of millions of man-fans and Ray Stantz, I’m paying to see that and bringing all my friends!

Full disclosure: Dan Akyroyd executive produced the reboot. Just something worth mentioning.

Ghostbusters will haunt the big screen on July 15, 2016.

Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones are our new paranormal investigators along with their loyal secretary Chris Hemsworth. Neil Casey, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, Matt Walsh, Pat Kiernan, Cecily Strong, and Charles Dance also star. Cameos will include the original film’s stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts. Plus Ozzy Osbourne.

Synopsis:
Dead criminals from all eras of New York’s underbelly past have returned to roost among the living. Pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of zoot-suited gangsters are ready to take on four formidable female busters looking to rid the city of its phantasmic filth.

The Predator Gets New Release Date; Fred Dekker Compares Film to Aliens

We’re less than two years away from the return of a beloved horror franchise in the form of The Predator, being co-written by Shane Black and Fred Dekker and directed by Black. The film, described as a sequel that will also reboot the series, was originally set for release in March 2018 but has just been bumped up nearly a full month.

The Predator will now arrive in theaters on February 9, 2018.

What can we expect from the film? Dekker teased an action spectacle over on The Movie Crypt.

If you think of the first Predator as Alien, ours is much more Aliens,” said the film’s co-writer. “It’s not Ten Little Indians; it’s not, ‘Let’s kill off all of our characters,’ because we have a lot of characters, from a lot of different worlds and ideologies. I don’t mean other planets. It’s a lot of people doing a lot of things in a lot of locations.”

Dekker also suggested that film will dig into the titular villain’s backstory.

[The original is] relatively simple,” he said, “and our idea was, ‘Okay, we know that story already. What’s behind the curtain? Why are they here? What are they doing? What’s the bigger picture of this?’ I think these are questions you can answer, or at least explore, without defeating that sense of scariness. And who knows if their agenda’s changed?

Axeman II: Overkill Trailer Delivers the Chop

After months of eager anticipation, we’ve finally got hold of the first trailer for Axeman II: Overkill, and it’s just as choppy (literally) as we’d hoped.

We’ll let you know when the Axeman will be chopping his way towards you as soon as we hear of a release date.

From the Press Release:
Filmmaker Joston “El Rey” Theney of production company #SinningWorks announces the official release of the teaser for the highly anticipated sequel to 2014’s AXEMAN, titled AXEMAN II: OVERKILL. The film stars MTV “Teen Mom” Farrah Abraham, CBS “Big Brother” winner Rachel Reilly, “Baywatch” alum Angelica Bridges, and WWE’s Bryan “Adam Bomb” Clark.

“The film’s been done for about a year and a half,” says El Rey when asked what the hold-up has been. “There’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes nonsense, but regardless of the outcome, you will see the film this winter whether it’s ‘their’ release or mine. We have some incredibly awesome fans and diehard gore-hounds that have been following the release news religiously, and my goal since the beginning has been to satisfy them. They’re the reason I make the AXEMAN films.”

Production stills released along with the trailer reveal additional characters not shown previously. With 27 speaking roles in the film, what separates this film from the original other than the number of characters?

“The difference between this film and the original is the sheer abundance of talented actors and outlandish characters. Each character and actor could carry their own film,” Theney says. “Without revealing too much, ‘Mrs. Whitfield,’ played by the talented Monique Parent, holds the key to understanding why the Axeman is back and how to stop him, but she has her own reasons for not divulging it. Michael Foster is ‘Polk Talbert,’ the original suspect believed to have given the Axeman legend its bloody beginnings. And ‘Kesha,’ played by Hannah Landberg, will definitely be a fan favorite as the sister to one of the victims from the original film who is probably more savage and frightening that the Axeman himself.”

Synopsis:
When a band of crazed evangelicals, bank robbers, and vigilantes descend upon Cutter’s Creek, there’s only one local legend that can separate them. And dismember them.

Production Begins on Remake of The Corpse Grinders

Released in 1971, director Ted V. Mikels’ low-budget film The Corpse Grinders has become something of a cult classic over the years, though we can’t say we ever expected it’d get the remake treatment. That said, a remake is indeed in the works, and we’ve just gotten word that production has begun. Read on for all the details!

The film centers on Landau, owner of the Lotus Cat Food Company, who has run into financial trouble. He winds up killing one of his employees and disposing of the body by grinding it up and putting it in his product. Suddenly, sales start to spike, leading to more disappearances; one of the victims is a man named Frank, whose girlfriend Tessie sets out find him.

One major difference will separate the reboot from the original, director Timo Rose recently told Fangoria.

I don’t want to see cats killing people,” said Rose. “I want to see Landau killing people. It’s time to retell the whole story from the beginning. It is a reboot, and it is something different and very new. It’s a modern version of bone-crushing terror, bloody and scary.”

Max Evans, Enya Maria Tames, and Yazmeen Baker star.

Aaron Paul Recalls Disastrous Cloverfield Audition

Many years before 10 Cloverfield Lane, now available for digital purchase, we were introduced to the J.J. Abrams-produced universe courtesy of found footage monster movie Cloverfield. Today we’ve got a fun little Cloverfield story to share with you, as actor Aaron Paul has spilled the beans on his failed audition for the 2008 film!

While chatting with Tom Hiddleston for Variety and PBS’ series “Actors on Actors,” Paul recalled that J.J. Abrams had convinced him to perform a magic trick on the set of Mission Impossible 3, with Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast watching, and when Abrams brought up the memory during his Cloverfield audition, well, it derailed the whole thing.

I went into this audition for Cloverfield. J.J. Abrams was producing it and I kept asking if J.J. was going to be in the room and 100% of the time they said, ‘No, he’s out of the state,’” Paul opened up. “I walk in, and J.J.’s there. He brings up the magic trick story, and I lose my train of thought. I have three pages of a monologue that I memorized. That was my audition.”

He has me tell the story about the card trick, and now I’m super awkward,” Paul continued. “He’s like, ‘Now let’s get started,’ and I start doing this monologue and I completely lose my train of thought and I stop and I apologize to J.J. He’s like, ‘That’s okay. Thanks for coming in.’ I’m like, ‘See ya,’ and I walked out. It was awful.”

Of course, things ended up working out for Paul, as “Breaking Bad” premiered the same year Cloverfield was released!
