Roland Emmerich Reveals Original Independence Day Sequel Concept

We’re just over one week away from the release of Independence Day: Resurgence, and you may be asking yourself why the hell it took so long for the 1996 film to spawn a sequel – it was, after all, the highest grossing film of that year. Well, a sequel was actually planned many years ago; it just never got off the ground.

Speaking with Empire, director Roland Emmerich spilled the beans on the unmade follow-up.

It was after 9/11 and [producer] Dean Devlin and I wanted to make the movie about peace, and it just didn’t work,” Emmerich shared with Empire. “There’s still an element of that in the new one, but that version was only about that.”

We shoot aliens down accidentally and then at the end of the movie they land on the White House lawn and say ‘we come in peace’ and that was it,” he continued. “It was just too weak an idea, and we didn’t really want to do it.”

So, will there be a sequel to Resurgence? There’s a good chance.

If it’s successful enough, yes [there’ll be a third movie], because it’s set up for a sequel,” Emmerich revealed.

Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Angelababy, William Fichtner, and Sela Ward all star in Independence Day: Resurgence.

Look for the film to hit theaters everywhere June 24, 2016.

Synopsis:
After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

It was announced a week or two ago that Bill Skarsgård would be playing the inonic character of Pennywise the Clown in the upcoming two-part theatrical telling of Stephen King’s It. One creative fan, Cody Ong, just created an interesting look at how Skarsgård could possibly appear should the powers-that-be decide to follow the design makeup made famous by Tim Curry.

Check it out below.

Andy Muschietti, the helmer behind the surprise horror hit Mama, is directing the adaptation. The first part begins shooting in July in Toronto and has been casting up: Skarsgård has the part of the demonic clown Pennywise, while Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor are the kids he terrorizes.

The story follows a group of kids called the Losers Club who defeat a creature called It. Years later, the creature returns; and the former club members, now adults, have to band together again even though they have no memory of the first battle.

Owen Teague will play Patrick Hocksetter, part of a group of bullies who torment the Losers Club. He is a psychopath and keeps a refrigerator full of animals that he’s killed.

Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, and Barbara Muschietti are producing.

This? This is pretty cool, but we’re pretty sure it won’t be online very long so if you wanna see it, you’d better get to stepping!

Fan Josh Allwein cut the STARZ series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” into a nearly 5-hour long feature film and then ran it through a VHS filter, giving it that authentic 80’s feel. Dig it!

The gift to Evil Dead fans known as “Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season 1” is coming home on August 23rd. Look for official release details soon!

About “Ash vs. Evil Dead”
“Ash vs. Evil Dead” (review) premiered on Halloween 2015. The series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers of the franchise, and Craig DiGregorio, who serves as executive producer and showrunner.

Campbell reprises his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario, and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity, and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons – personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.

The cast is led by Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) in the role of Ash Williams; Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks; Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick; Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past; and Jill Marie Jones (“Sleepy Hollow”) as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner.

Raimi directed the first episode of “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which he wrote with Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell) and Tom Spezialy (“Chuck,” “Reaper,” “Desperate Housewives”). Raimi also serves as executive producer with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” Xena: Warrior Princess”) and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) along with Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”), who serves as executive producer/showrunner. Ivan Raimi serves as co-executive producer, and Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) and Chloe Smith (“Spartacus”) serve as producers.

Winona Ryder Has No Idea What’s Going on With Beetlejuice 2

Our friends over at Collider recently caught up with actress Winona Ryder to get an update on the sequel to Beetlejuice, and it’s just more of the same.

“I don’t really know what’s going on with that. Obviously, it was an iconic film. The only way it could really ever be done is with Tim [Burton] and Michael [Keaton]. I don’t know. There’s something that really resonates with all ages, with that film. It’s interesting. I think it would be great if it happened, if it was the right circumstances. Gosh, you know you’re getting older when they’re making TV shows, sequels, or plays for things that you did. It’s very flattering and very humbling, indeed. I heard they were making another Little Women. Mine was the fifth one, so that’s kudos to Louisa May Alcott. It’s just very flattering.”

Last we heard both Michael Keaton and Tim Burton were game. Maybe if we all close our eyes and say “Beetlejuice” three times, we can collectively push things along? Stay tuned.

Writer Jack Reher (Into the Grizzly Maze) will make his directorial debut with The Incurables, an adaptation of Jon Bassoff’s same-named novel that centers on real-life lobotomy specialist Dr. Walter Freeman. The ’50s-set film is gearing up to begin production, and Reher just scooped us on the latest casting news.

We’re excited to report tonight that Thomas Jane and Kirk Acevedo will star alongside Tom Sizemore. As we previously reported, Sizemore will also produce.

I’ve got the best crew,” Jack Reher excitedly told us. “Joseph White (Mother’s Day, Repo!) is my cinematographer. John Lind (Legends of the Fall) is my 1st AD. Kenneth Burke (Soul Surfer) is my producer/line producer. Jeff Grace (We Are What We Are, The Sacrament) is my composer.”

Reher wrote the script with Jean-Marie Sobeck.

Synopsis:
Disgraced in the psychiatric hospital where he’d practiced nearly 30 years, Dr. Walter Freeman (Sizemore) has taken to traversing the country and proselytizing about a very new kind of salvation: the transorbitol lobotomy. With an icepick and a hammer, Freeman lands in a town full of degenerates that test his own sanity.

Will You Want to Commit Suicide After Watching the Trailer for The Asylum’s Sinister Squad?

The summer of 2016 is looking to be the return of the full-fledged Asylum mockbuster. Seems The Asylum’s Independents’ Day was just the warm-up. Next up, fairy tale villains fill in for comic book supervillains in Sinister Squad. I wonder what movie this was inspired by?

A pseudo follow-up to his 2015 “The Avengers with fairy tale super-heroines” flick Avengers Grimm, writer-director Jeremy M. Inman’s Sinister Squad sees the world in grave danger from a supernatural force, and only an unlikely rogue’s gallery of fairy tale villains can save us from this evil.

Synopsis:
When a supernatural cult threatens Earth, Alice must assemble a team of fairy tale villains to face the literal forces of Death.

Leading the charge is Rumpelstiltskin (played by Johnny Rey Diaz), who is clearly patterned after Jared Leto’s Joker. Hopefully he didn’t send any of his co-stars dead rats or used condoms.

Other fairy tale anti-heroes rounded up by Alice and Goldilocks to round out the Sinister Squad include The Big Bad Wolf, Bluebeard, Carabosse, and Gelda. The Mad Hatter and the Pied Piper also figure into the action.

Christina Licciardi, Lindsay Sawyer, Trae Ireland, Joseph Michael Harris, Fiona Rene, and Talia A. Davis co-star.

Contrary to the punny headline of this article, the trailer for Suicide Squad probably won’t make you want to commit suicide. But will it make you want to watch Sinister Squad when it arrives on DVD/VOD July 5th?

If you think The Asylum is done with mockbusters for the summer, think again. Their Roman religious epic In the Name of Ben Hur releases August 2nd, a week before the big screen remake of Ben Hur races into theaters.

Shirakawa has passed away at the age of 79. She was seen in such classics as Rodan, The Mysterians, and The H-Man. Her lengthy career spanned many decades, and her last appearance was in the 2014 Japanese TV series “Black President.”

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to honor Shirakawa and offer our deepest on condolences to her many friends, family members, and constituents.

The Conjuring 2 Spin-off The Nun Is Under Way

$

Me? I have a completely irrational fear of nuns. Needless to say, The Conjuring 2 had me crawling out of my skin. Well, apparently my skin is about to do a lot more crawling…

According to THR, New Line is spinning off the villain of the supernatural thriller, the demonic nun, into her own movie.

David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote The Conjuring 2, has been hired to pen what is being titled The Nun. James Wan, who directed the Conjuring movies, and Peter Safran, who produced them, are reuniting to produce the spin-off.

What is noteworthy about the demon nun character is that she didn’t exist until about three months before The Conjuring 2 opened, as she was only added during last-minute reshoots.

The studio and Wan had a cut of the movie, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators, in which the antagonist was a demonic figure with horns. The studio was ready to release that version, but at the last minute Wan was struck by a revelation. And so he came up with a new concept: a demon nun, which he pitched to New Line. And even though the late-in-the-game change could have spooked some studios, New Line execs gave him their blessing.

The shoot took place in March, just three months before the movie was scheduled to open on June 10.

The Nun will be the second spin-off from the Conjuring series, following 2014’s Annabelle. That movie proved to be a horror hit when it ultimately grossed over $256 million worldwide (or nearly 40 times its production budget). New Line has now slated an Annabelle sequel for 2017.

The Conjuring franchise remains popular as The Conjuring 2 was not only the No. 1 film in North America, but also No. 1 internationally this past weekend outside of China. It was also the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in 30 markets including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America, and most markets in Asia. The movie has already grossed over $100 million worldwide in five days of release.

David F. Sandberg Talks Making a Better Annabelle Sequel

Let’s face it. The Annabelle movie was a HUGE missed opportunity. But Lights Out director David F. Sandberg is looking to right that wrong. Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting recently caught up with Sandberg, who had this to say about the upcoming project.

I don’t think I can give too many details at this point, but it’s not a continuation of the first film. That’s one of the many things that enticed me with the project, that it’s new story. Also the setting and the time period of this one is perfect for a horror movie. The script is really good, and I think that this is a sequel that will actually be better than the original. The ‘Godfather II of creepy doll movies’ as I like to call it.

The Annabelle sequel is set for release on May 19, 2017.

A new promo teaser has arrived for the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, and it finds the symbol that “defined a generation” getting an upgrade.  Check it out, and let us know what you think… I have a feeling that fans of the original will not be kind.

Ghostbusters will begin haunting the big screen on July 15, 2016. Directed by Paul Feig and written by Feig and Katie Dippold, Ghostbusters 2016 is based on the 1984 film of the same name written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

Williams, Matt Walsh, Pat Kiernan, Cecily Strong, and Charles Dance also star. Cameos will include the original film’s stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts plus Ozzy Osbourne and more.
