First Details Released on The 11th New York Asian Film Festival

Fans of Asian cinema in the New York area are sure to be happy to get the news that the 11th annual New York Asian Film Festival has set the dates of June 29 through July 15 for this year's event. We've got tons of news about it so read on.

Co-presented with The Film Society of Lincoln Center and in association with Japan Society, the NYAFF is North American's leading festival for popular Asian cinema. All the details we currently have are listed in the press release below, and you can stay current on updates by visiting the New York Asian Film Festival Facebook page.

From the Press Release
The opening night film is Pang Ho-cheung’s astonishingly filthy, extremely hilarious Vulgaria, a movie about making movies, shot in just 12 days, all about gangsters named Brother Tyrannosaur, sleazy lawyers, the sex film industry, and men who love donkeys a little too much. The Hollywood Reporter calls it a “...laugh-out-loud, aptly titled comedy.” Pang himself, Hong Kong's hottest young director, will be a guest of the festival, and we'll be presenting his new romantic comedy, Love in the Buff, about a couple who meet in the smoke break alley outside their office building and try to make their romance work despite cell phones dropped in toilets, friends who have the death touch, and corporate moves to Beijing.

We'll also be giving a Lifetime Achievement Award to Chung Chang-Wha, the great Korean action director whose 1972 movie for Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers studio, Five Fingers of Death, was the first international martial arts hit to break through in the West. It launched the kung-fu craze over here, and we’ll have him in the house for a screening of a gorgeous print of Five Fingers of Death.

We are super-psyched to be bringing the man who is widely regarded as Korea's greatest actor, Choi Min-Sik (star of Oldboy and I Saw The Devil), here as our guest, and we'll be screening his latest film, Nameless Gangster (TIME Magazine calls it "the Korean mob film Scorsese would be proud of") as well as a fistful of his classics, including Oldboy and his underseen and heartbreaking boxing film, Crying Fist.

Over the last few years, Taiwan's film industry has experienced a major revitalization, producing some of the biggest blockbusters in Asia after a brief lull in the late 1990's and early 2000's. We'll be hosting a special focus on Taiwanese films, including a Fourth of July presentation of the humongous, uncut, four-and-a-half-hour Seediq Bale, which is that country’s exhilarating, decapitation-filled version of Braveheart, all about its indigenous people fighting for their freedom in 1930. We'll also be screening the hit romantic comedy You Are the Apple of My Eye, which set box office records in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Mainland China.

We've also got a brand new movie from Takashi Miike (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney), a 30-minute short film from Korea’s Park Chan-Wook and his brother Park Chan-Kyung (Night Fishing), Nasi Lemak 2.0, a Malaysian food movie directed by and starring controversial rapper Namewee, which is one of the most delicious, hyperkinetic, totally redonkulous comedies we’ve ever seen, the brutal animated feature, King of Pigs fresh out of Cannes, Scabbard Samurai, the latest film from Hitoshi Matsumoto (director and star of Symbol), and more, more, more!!!

The New York Asian Film Festival is deeply grateful for the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York (which is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region this year), the Korean Cultural Service New York, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.

So the question beckons ... does Tim Burton's take on the classic vampire-themed soap opera "Dark Shadows" have any bite? Or is it the silly looking misfire that the trailers have suggested? Our verdict is in! Dig it!

Read our official Dark Shadows review here.

The ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, Thomas McDonell, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

Look for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows in theatres on May 11, 2012.

Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

The events take place around the town's annual Santa Parade, which has brought a record number of Santas to town. What better way to spend your Fourth of July weekend than by watching one of the best supernatural thrillers of the Eighties and finally getting the chance to witness ghost rape in hi-def? You’ll get to do both this July when The Entity comes to Blu-ray.

Barbara Hershey and Ron Silver star in Sidney J. Furie’s 1982 “based on a true story” tale of a woman terrorized by the physically and sexually abusive poltergeist of her deceased ex-husband and her desperate struggle to contend with both her supernatural ordeal and those that believe she’s simply crazy.

Synopsis:
Carla Moran awakens one night to find herself being beaten and raped by an unseen presence. Terrified of what's happening to her and shunned by friends and family who think she's lost her mind, she seeks help from parapsychologists. The researchers soon discover that an evil spiritual force has been drawn to Carla and is responsible for the violent attacks. The question now, however, is how do they stop it? Based on a supposedly true story.

Starz/Anchor Bay are set to re-release The Entity on DVD July 3rd (a 2005 DVD release is now out-of-print), but more importantly, The Entity will make its bow on Blu-ray the same day. No word yet as to what, if any, supplemental material will be included.

We've been excited for this project since it was first announced way back in 2008. I mean, come on! Guillermo del Toro collaborating with the incredible artist Gris Grimly? As a fan could you possibly ask for more? Good things are coming, Dread heads. Read on!

From the Press Releaase
Guillermo Del Toro will co-direct Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio with Mark Gustafson (Animation Director on The Fantastic Mr. Fox). The Jim Henson Company production will be a 3D stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio based on the edition of Carlo Collodi's classic tale illustrated by Gris Grimly. Inferno will represent the property to international buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

Del Toro most recently served as executive producer of DreamWorks' Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2 and the upcoming Rise of the Guardians as well as creative consultant on Megamind. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio marks his first turn helming an animated feature.

With a story by Del Toro, his frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins, and Gris Grimly, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is a retelling of one of the world's best-loved tales. The puppet Pinocchio embarks on a series of extraordinary and thrilling adventures, proving himself to be as indestructible as his love for his father. Robbins wrote the screenplay for the project.

Lisa Henson will produce for The Jim Henson Company with Del Toro and Jason Lust. Grimly and Gary Ungar will serve as executive producers, as will Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel of Inferno. Veteran rock musician and film composer Nick Cave will serve as music consultant for the production.

"Guillermo has been so passionate about this project from its inception, and it is an honor to have him bring his unique blend of live action and animation experience to this well-loved story, collaborating with the talented Mark Gustafson," said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company.

"We thought the combination of beloved family friendly brands such as Pinocchio and The Jim Henson Company, along with the visual and storytelling genius of Guillermo del Toro, would have the makings of a film that will have tremendous worldwide box office appeal," said Inferno's Co-Chairman Bill Johnson. Added Jim Seibel, Co-Chairman of Inferno, "This is an exciting opportunity for both Inferno and the international distributors to be in business with filmmakers of this pedigree."

The Theatre Bizarre is one of the more well received anthologies to come our way in recent years, but of course no film is ever fully reviewed until it gets the Trembles treatment. Read on to see what our crazy Canuck thought of it!

Synopsis:
This boundary-pushing film featuring stories of ancient evil, love, obsession, addiction, gluttony, sexual nightmares, pain, brutality, and of course, death by directors Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini, and Richard Stanley.

Down a seedy city street, a young woman is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night she sees the front door slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the vast, eerie auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an odd marionette-like man who will introduce her to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees crosses paths with a lustful witch; a paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; the Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; the horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; a woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the fluid of her victims’ eyeballs; and a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep. But as the stories unfold, something strange is happening to the woman. Something irreversible and horrific. Something that awaits its next audience in THE THEATRE BIZARRE.

With this new batch of character posters for Season 5 of "True Blood" comes good news and bad. Since Denis O'Hare's Russell is among them, we can happily assume we'll be seeing his character again soon. On the minus side, Rutina Wesley's Tara is also there so it looks like reports of her demise may have been premature.

"True Blood" takes place in the not-too-distant future, when vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source. Alan Ball created and executive produces the show, based on the best-selling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

The 12-episode fifth season of "True Blood" will kick off Sunday, June 10th, at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT). For more in the meantime visit "True Blood" on HBO.com, "like" "True Blood" on Facebook, and jump in on the Twitter conversations here using the hashtag #trueblood.

It stars Robert Pattinson, who is working hard at shedding Edward Cullen by undertaking a completely different vapid persona. Check out some nifty promotional pics that feature the actor riffing on a few of the director's past works.

The French version of Premiere (as translated by Cosmopolis Movie - the dedicated fansite for the film) indicates it was Pattinson's idea to pay homage to such Cronenbergian classics as Videodrome, Scanners and Dead Ringers. Beyond that, you can also dig on the film's theatrical poster and trailer below. Cosmopolis is due to hit at some point in 2012 and is based on Don DeLillo's novel about a young billionaire's bizarre odyssey across NYC and his encounters with several unsavory characters. Cronenberg adapted DeLillo's work for the screen. Give me this over the plethora of remakes and sequels any day, Pattinson or not.

We previously told you that the British thriller Airborne would be hitting five UK screens on May 11th as part of the prestigious British Independent Film Festival. That's only a day away, and to get the buzz going, we've got a look at some new promotional posters.

On Friday, May 11th, the movie will premiere at 8:30 pm on five screens at the British Independent Film Festival. The five screens are the Empire Leicester Square (in London), the Empire cinemas in Poole and Newcastle and the Apollo Cinemas in Port Talbot and Stafford. We're told the Leicester Square screening is sold out; no word on the other four screens.

Directed by Dominic Burns, Airborne stars Mark Hamill, Sebastian Street, Simon Phillips, and Bill Murray. Chelsea Films will be releasing Airborne on Region 2 DVD in July.

Synopsis
As a snow storm closes in, one final plane takes off. The plane reports to the ground that both pilots are dead, while the slowly dwindling number of passengers on the plane wish that they'd never left the ground.
