The Asylum Would Much Rather You Call Them Ghosthunters

$

0

Hey, you got your Ghostbusters mockbuster in my Conjuring mockbuster! No, you got your Conjuring mockbuster in my Ghostbusters mockbuster! Who’s The Asylum gonna call? Ghosthunters!

The busy beavers at The Asylum have been working overtime this summer, rolling out a slew of new films designed to ride the coattails of some of the summer’s biggest blockbusters: Independents’ Day, Sinister Squad, and now Ghosthunters.

Stephen Manley, David O’Donnell, and Liz Fenning star in writer-director Pearry Teo’s fright flick that seems to be taking a less comical approach to the concept of a team of scientists working together to battle and capture ghosts.

Synopsis:
When one of their own loses his wife and daughter at the hands of a serial killer, a team of ghosthunters are determined to capture the spirits of the loved ones so they can finally rest in peace. But as the team members go deeper into the house, the ghosts become more hostile, and they discover the true secrets of the house and its murderer.

It would be easy to dismiss this as just another Asylum knock-off except the trailer for Ghosthunters actually looks rather intriguing to me. Teo has given the film a gloomier, more cinematic look than other Asylum mockbusters that come to mind, and I rather like what I’m seeing with the seemingly steampunk-infused concept of having Ghostbusters battling Blumhouse-style ghosts rather than Slimer, Stay Puft Mashmallow Man, and the other Saturday morning cartoon-ish ghosts of the controversial reboot. Maybe they should have called this one Ghostblumers instead?

I’ve even come across dueling artwork for Ghosthunters. One sells it as a straightforward horror film, and the other clearly plays up the Ghostbusters angle. Even the trailer seems to be at odds with itself, selling a movie that’s trying to be its own thing while goofy taglines appear that scream “mockbuster.”

Ghosthunters begins busting on VOD July 5th. I ain’t afraid of no mockbuster.

Gorge on the Official Blood Feast Remake Trailer

$

We’ve been holding out hope that Marcel Walz’s Blood Feast remake will live up to its splatter classic roots, and if the trailer that arrived today is any indication, it’s definitely on the right path.  Best of all is the chance to see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 alum Caroline Williams back in action.

Just a word of caution… eating before watching could be a big mistake.

Along with Williams, Walz’s remake of the 1963 classic from Herschell Gordon Lewis stars Robert Rusler, Sophie Monk, and Sadie Katz. Ryan Nicholson heads up the makeup department, which obviously got quite a workout.

Synopsis:
Fuad Ramses (Rusler) and his family have moved from the United States to France, where they run an American diner. Since business is not going too well, Fuad also works night shifts in a museum of ancient Egyptian culture. During these long, lonely nights he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar (Katz). He becomes more and more allured by the goddess as she speaks to him in visions. Eventually he succumbs to her deadly charms.

After this pivotal night, Fuad begins a new life, in which murder and cannibalism become his daily bread. He starts to prepare a ritual feast to honor his new mistress, a lavish affair dripping with blood, organs, and intestines of human victims. As butchered bodies are heaped upon the Altar of Ishtar, Fuad slowly slips further into madness until he is no more than the goddess’ puppet; and she thirsts for the blood of Fuad’s wife and daughter too…

Rest in Peace: Anton Yelchin

Some incredibly sad news has arrived today as multiple sources are reporting that rising star Anton Yelchin has died at the all-too-young age of 27.  Yelchin, born March 11, 1989, in what is now St. Petersburg, Russia, was the victim of a freak automobile accident.

Per TMZ, Yelchin’s friends became alarmed because he was supposed to meet them hours earlier for a rehearsal. They went to his San Fernando Valley home at around 1 AM this morning (June 19th) and found him pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate, with the vehicle’s engine still running. The police do not suspect foul play.

“Actor Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning,” his publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed. “His family requests you respect their privacy at this time.”

Most recently Yelchin was announced as one of the stars of Guillermo del Toro’s “Trollhunters” animated series for Netflix and previously graced the horror genre with roles in Green Room, Burying the Ex, Only Lovers Left Alive, and the 2011 Fright Night remake. He also appeared as Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation and portrays Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek film series.

Our deepest condolences to Yelchin’s family members and friends.  He has been taken from us far too soon but even at such a young age has left quite an impressive body of work that will live on for many years to come.  Rest in peace.

Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? (TV-Movie, 2016)

mother_may_i_sleep_with_danger_tv-225644612-largeStarring Leila George, Tori Spelling, Emily Meade

Directed by Melanie Aitkenhead

Call it a remake, call it a re-imagining, call it a reformation – any way you slice it, the act of shoving a “retread” of an otherwise valueless 90’s film down our throats leaves little to be desired… unless you’re into that kind of thing. James Franco takes the Tori Spelling vehicle Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? and retools it into a teenybopper-like, MTV-styled lesbian/vampire thriller; and before the fellas get their inner 12-year-olds worked up, let’s delve into the details a bit.

Directed by Melanie Aitkenhead, the subject matter of this particular film differs from the 1996 original – we’ve spanned from abusive teen relationship to retributive vampires… yep, ready to turn the lights out real quick. However, I stuck with it and trudged along, watching as if I didn’t have a jaded bone in my body (quite the herculean feat) and was mildly impressed at what I’d seen early on.

Our main character, Leah (George), is a theater student who’s currently reveling in her ability to snag the lead role in Macbeth away from her friend (Nick Eversman), who might not really have wanted the part as much as trying to get into Leah’s pants (you sly dog, you). Leah’s attentions have squarely been focused upon Pearl (Meade), who was revealed early on in the film to be a bloodsucker, and at the risk of sounding comparative, this one had all the makings of an atrocious adolescent drama on the Freeform/ABC Family network.

Next up on the young lovers’ agenda is to meet Leah’s mom (Spelling in an absolutely lethargic role) – and the honeymoon phase is just that when the inevitable bomb is dropped that Pearl is a nightwalker… will somebody please cue the foreboding music? The remainder of details would needlessly be inundating you with stodgy dialogue between characters and the ever-so-cliched slow-motioned Twilight-styled entrances whenever a group of vampires enter a room… aah, the abandonment of fresh ideas.

Ivan Sergei, who played the role of the domineering boyfriend in the original, is relegated to college professor in this one, offering his teachings on “vampires and sexuality” in class… no, I’m not kidding. Look, I’m not going to sit here and bash this pic like a bloody pinata until the guts spill out all over the floor, and I’m sure that this will have an audience to some extent (good thing school’s out so the kids can stay up and watch this), and aside from a VERY sordid scene that might make Mom and Dad want to shield the little one’s eyes, this entire exhibit turned to ash when the sunlight hit it.

If it’s okay with you, Mom, I’d prefer to doze by myself before lying down with this one again.

Warcraft (2016)

warcraftposterStarring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell

Directed by Duncan Jones

So, here we are. After years and years of broken promises and false hopes, the Warcraft movie is finally upon us. One of the most successful MMORP games of all time has finally hit the big screen. But does it finally put an end to the curse of terrible video game movies, or does it end up being a steaming pile of Kraul Guano?

Well… it’s a bit of both, to be honest. While it’s not the unforgivably awful disaster that many other publications are making it out to be, it’s certainly not without its flaws. And they’re giant troll-sized flaws.

So, to start, I have to commend them from veering away from the usual humans good/ugly creatures bad route that we see all too often. The people in this film, human or not, are individuals with personalities and motives. Nobody here is predestined to be evil simply because of the particular group that they were born into, and in a world today where bigotry still exists on a massive scale, that’s saying something.

But the rest of the film sadly isn’t so commendable. What we mostly have is an overly convoluted and byzantine plot that will probably require several viewings for even the most meticulous viewer to fully understand. And if you’re not already acquainted with Warcraft lore, then forget it. They assume right from the offset that you know your shit when it comes to the world of Azeroth, and if you don’t, then good luck keeping track of the already bungled mess of a script. Hell, they even got in some cringeworthy Star Wars prequel-style political talk for good measure. George Lucas would be proud.

So yeah, the plot wasn’t great in that sense; but surprisingly, in the middle of it all, we actually have quite an entertaining road movie in which our heroes embark on their epic quest to stop the evil green magic from destroying everything or something (don’t ask me). If the film had put more focus on these rare scenes and less on the political meeting mumbo jumbo, then we might actually have the fantasy equivalent of Guardians of the Galaxy on the hands. But enough of that entertaining nonsense, we’ve got another long-winded speech about the morality of warfare to get to. By the time we finally get to the big huge climatic battle, it’s just as awesome as you would expect, but it’s too little too late.

And as for the performances, well, meh. They did what they could, I suppose. But you can’t really do much with dialogue like: “Some see death as having some greater purpose, but when it is one of your own, it is hard to grasp anything good comes from it.”

But (to be honest, I’m not sure if this should really still be a praise-worthy point for a huge blockbuster film or just a given), it was beautiful to look at. I would sure want to live in Azeroth were it not for the endless warfare. Although (again, to be honest, and please don’t kill me for saying this) the Warcraft MMORPG isn’t really a hugely rich cinematic gaming experience on par with, say, God of War, where you wish that you could play it the big screen just to look at it; but the film hits it out of the park in this category. From the shiny floating city of Dalaran to the charging hoards of Orcs, everything here looks like it was designed for the ultimate cinematic experience.

I have a lot of respect for Duncan Jones as a filmmaker, but with Warcraft being his first huge blockbuster, he clearly wasn’t given the level of creative freedom that we’ve become accustomed to seeing in his work, and that’s a shame because somewhere in Warcraft lies a great movie trying to get out. And although it hasn’t been a huge hit in the States, the Chinese gross currently stands at $156 million, so a sequel seems like a strong possibility. Whether or not Jones will return remains to be seen, but if he does, one can only hope that Universal takes the criticisms of the first film into account and gives him the autonomy to make it in his own way.

Everyone loved the vampire horror/comedy What We Do in the Shadows, and rightly so… it was damned entertaining. There’s been talk of both a TV show and a sequel for a while now, but finally word has come that a second installment is indeed in the works.

According to New Zealand’s Stuff, creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi still have We’re Wolves, a sequel to hit 2014 vampire mockumentary, in the planning stages (focused on Rhys Darby’s control-freak werewolf Anton).

Not a lot to go on, but at least we know it’s happening. Stay tuned for more as it comes.

There seems to be something of a surge in indie VHS-focused horror games recently. The latest is The Final Take, which has just been released on Steam. I swear that creepy, grainy VHS quality footage effect will never get old.

Each location has a different twist and new enemies to encounter; some are aggressive, while others lurk in the shadows waiting for an opportunity to strike.
