Total War: Warhammer Gets Blood and Gore DLC!

0
0

Well, this is definitely the best news I’ve heard all day! As with other games in the Total War series, Total War: Warhammer has received blood and gore DLC, awesomely titled Blood for the Blood God.

So if, like many fans, you were disappointed with the fact that the game was originally slapped with a soft “T” rating, then get on to Steam and download that shit to experience Warhammer as it’s meant to be! Bathe the battlefields in the blood of your enemies, and make the Blood God proud! “Beyond the world, he waits atop a throne of skulls,” waiting for you to purchase this DLC.

And, by the way, I called it! Back in July 2015, when talking about the first gameplay footage, I correctly predicted that Total War: Warhammer would receive blood and gore DLC. So I certainly know my shit!

Synopsis:
”I will slay you for my master. Blood beyond measure will I spill upon the battlefields of the world.” – Marius Hollseher, Liber Malefic

From the frigid climes of Norsca to the arid wastes of the southern Badlands, the Old World echoes to the joust and jostle of ceaseless war. As each race struggles to establish its dominion – or merely to survive in this age of strife – there is but one certain outcome: Blood will flow!

Blood for the Blood God brings a number of gory new mature-rated effects to Total War: WARHAMMER:

  • Blood spurts
  • Gory spatter on unit models
  • Limb and head dismemberment (humanoids and non-legendary characters)
  • Zombies, skeletons, and Grave Guard may continue to fight after dismemberment!
  • Explosive Gibbing from deadly mid-torso strikes
  • Blood-drenched UI elements
  • New random, global campaign events that generate greater carnage in battle

Once downloaded, blood effects can be enabled in the Advanced Graphics Settings of Total War: WARHAMMER. Please note that depending on your country of residence, Blood for the Blood God may raise the age rating of the main game.

Underworld: Blood Wars Gets Moved to 2017

The hit Underworld franchise gets a fourth sequel in the form of Underworld: Blood Wars, which was originally set for theatrical release on October 14th of this year. The film would’ve made for damn fine Halloween viewing, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Screen Gems will now unleash the vamps and wolves on January 6, 2017.

Read on for everything we know about the new sequel!

Alongside series star Kate Beckinsale, Theo James (the Divergent series) returns as Selene’s ally David, reprising the role he played in Underworld: Awakening. British actors Tobias Menzies (“Outlander,” “Rome”) and Lara Pulver (“Sherlock”) take on the respective roles of a formidable new Lycan leader and a fiercely ambitious Vampire, and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) again plays Vampire elder Thomas.

Rounding out the film’s stellar international cast are: James Faulkner (“Game of Thrones”), Peter Andersson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), newcomer Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James (A&E’s “Damien”), and Daisy Head (Fallen).

Anna Foerster directs. Foerster, who previously directed episodes of the television series “Criminal Minds” and “Outlander,” is widely known for her work as cinematographer on epic blockbusters such as Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and White House Down.

The screenplay for Underworld: Blood Wars was penned by Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter, Priest) and based on characters originally created by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman, and Danny McBride. Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg (The Lincoln Lawyer, Million Dollar Baby), Gary Lucchesi (Million Dollar Baby, Underworld), and Richard S. Wright (The Lincoln Lawyer, Underworld) are producing, as is David Kern (Underworld: Awakening) along with Len Wiseman (Underworld, Total Recall).

A Decade of Dread Central – Our Ten(!)-Year Anniversary

0
0

As I sit here typing this, I can still remember the first day Dread Central launched. It was July 4, 2006, when we declared our independence; and this weekend we celebrate our 10th anniversary. A decade of Dread. In website years that makes us older than dirt. Hell, few companies (I think it’s like 4%) ever make it this long; and that’s a testament to the love that’s gone into this site and the support you guys have given us.

To be perfectly honest with you, we now live in a world where “Likes” and “Shares” dictate your relevance. Times have changed for the better and also the worse. We still soldier on though… like a cockroach that won’t go away. We can’t. Somebody has to be here to keep you screaming, and we pride ourselves on that. There have been more downs than there have been ups, that’s for sure, but it isn’t about that. It’s about how many times you can keep getting up. Keep fighting for what you love.

We’ve celebrated many a milestone. We’ve released two movies with Ruthless Pictures, Zombieworld and Monsterland, that were meant to showcase the indie spirit we so believe in. Some of the filmmakers involved in those projects have gone on to make feature films, and if you ask me, that’s one of our greatest successes.

Many of our staff, like Andrew Kasch and Buz Wallick, have gone on to blossoming careers within the film industry. We now have our own radio show with Brainwaves (Tim, thank you for giving us a playground on DeepTalkRadio). A line of badass T-shirts with Rotten Cotton (Shawn, it’s an honor to have you printing our stuff) and even our own subscription service with Box of Dread. We can always use your support to keep the lights on so if you can, buy a shirt! Subscribe for a box of mystery horror goodies to be delivered to your door! Everything we do is done by us. We have no parent company… we even sell our own ads. Hell, Jon Condit, our co-founder, packs every Box of Dread himself. We’re that indie!

Dread Central on Facebook, Dread Central on Twitter, and Dread Central on YouTube are still exploding with new “Likes” and “Shares” (remember those things?) so please take a moment to visit them and give us a “thumbs up!” Every little bit of support – no matter how trivial – really helps us to keep going for you.

As for myself and my partners in DC, Jon Condit and KW Low, our unconditional gratitude goes out to John Squires, Andrew Kasch, Buz Wallick, the Foywonder, Mr. Dark, Joe Knetter, Scott Hallam, Gareth Jones, Matt Fini, Sean Decker, Brad McHargue, Drew Tinnin, Paul Nicholasi, Heather Buckley, Mike Phalin, Staci Layne Wilson, Anthony Arrigo, Matt Molgaard, Todd Rigney, Vanessa Gomez, John Campopiano, Kyle Scharf, Matt Boiselle, Crix Lee, Trisha Chambers, Ted Hentschke, Todd Rigney, April Marie, Sean Brickley, David Gelmini, Andy Lalino, Ari Drew, Howard Gorman, Jeff Kirschner, Kieran Fisher, Cody Thrasher, Stephen Romano, Joshua Macmillan, Shane Churchman, Chase Will, Andrea Monier, Jesse Baget, and everyone else who either has been or has just started contributing to our little asylum. We’re lucky to have each and every one of you.

Also, a huge thank you to those who helped us along the way but have gone on to other things… Johnny Butane, Ryan Turek, Alex DiVincenzo, Ryan Acheson, Sean Clark, Morgan Elektra, Melissa Bostaph, Thom Carnell, Scott A. Johnson, Brian Smith, Heather Wixson, Emilie Black, Jess King, and all the others whose words and work have graced the site.

As always, my personal thanks go to Jon Condit, KW Low, and Debi Moore. Things have gotten tough at times, but together we’ve always managed to weather the storm. You three have been continuously saving my life for years, and I would be ZERO without you. Especially Debi. Someone’s gonna erect a statue of her one day for her saint-like service of putting up with me every day. I love you guys more than words could ever fully express.

Then there are our readers, both old and new. We’re proud to have you as our peers. Thanks for making the DC community one of the best and friendliest places online. And if you’re reading this and you haven’t jumped in, fucking do so already! I know you’re there! I can see you online!

Here’s to another year, kids! Thank you.

Jaume Collet-Serra Curates a Horror Collection for Shudder

0
0

Jaume Collet-Serra got his start in the horror genre with 2005’s House of Wax remake, next visiting it via Orphan in 2009.  His latest (and 7th film overall), The Shallows starring Blake Lively, made quite a splash in theaters last weekend so it’s perfect timing for him to curate a collection of his five favorite horror films for Shudder.

If you’re looking for something to watch this 4th of July weekend, you can’t do much better than several of his picks!

From the Press Release:
Shudder, the horror streaming service backed by AMC Networks, continues its guest curator initiative with a new collection by world-renowned director Jaume Collet-Serra. Collet-Serra has chosen five of his favorite horror films to share, all of which are now live on Shudder.

Collet-Serra’s collection — informed by his experience as a genre filmmaker — marks Shudder’s fifth guest curated collection, following collections by Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Robert Eggers (The Witch), Alexandre Aja (High Tension), and Karyn Kusama (The Invitation). Each of these curators’ top five horror films are currently available for Shudder members.

Lead Shudder curators Colin Geddes and Sam Zimmerman create detailed collections housing a variety of films that span all decades and sub-genres of horror. The full collection by Jaume Collet-Serra is detailed below (with comments from the director).

DREAM HOME
“Dream Home is an unexpected masterpiece. It has some of the most original, and brutal, kill/death scenes. A very normal desire to succeed and aspire to more takes hold and turns an honest and hardworking person into a murderer. This is one of those movies you’ll tell your friends about.”

FACES OF DEATH
“During my teen years, this movie was a guilty pleasure of mine. I have memories of checking the VHS tape out from the video store and sneaking it home like it was a bad thing. Since it was released before the Internet came around, it was like the ultimate resource for the grotesque. Even if some of the content is obviously fake, I consider it a crucial watch for any horror buff.”

THE CHASER
“This dark thriller is an essential. You watch it once, and it stays with you.”

TIMECRIMES
“Time travel movies are an impossible conundrum, but Timecrimes excels at it. Vigalondo successfully simplified a very complex subject and wove it into a narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Adding the fact that no special effects were used makes it all the more impressive.”

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE (2010)
“This film follows a family in Mexico and was done in a very realistic way. It builds the atmosphere so that you come to care for the characters, then realize they’re monsters. As a viewer, it gives you mixed feelings of betrayal. You go from identifying with them, to being shocked at the terrible things such ‘normal’ people can do.”

The addition of the latest guest curator collection on Shudder follows the completion of Shudder Labs, the service’s weeklong horror workshop for aspiring filmmakers. Further details on the guest curated collections and the program can be found at shudder.com and labs.shudder.com.

Blood-Soaked Folk: Exclusive Coverage of American Murder Song’s EP Launch Party

0

In case you didn’t know, a “murder ballad” is a sub-genre of the traditional folk song, the lyrics of which paint a colorful and often mournful narrative describing the events of a homicide.

The quirky offshoot was born in the early 1800s in the Appalachian Mountains, spread like wildfire, and reached its peak in Depression-era 1930s. It was occasionally resurrected in modern-day rock. The Jimi Hendrix hit “Hey Joe” is a murder ballad, and so is “Carolina Drama” by The Raconteurs. Even Eminem tried it out with “Stan.” Those are a few scattered examples, but the art form really hit its zenith in contemporary music when Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released their seminal album Murder Ballads in 1996.

American Murder Song

That was 20 years ago. It’s time for some new blood. And we know just the duo: Terrance Zdunich and Saar Hendelman – going by the stage names Messrs. Storm and Tender – have been working harder than moonshiners in Prohibition to bring us a fine assemblage of blood-soaked folk in the form of an EP of all-new, old-souled tunes, American Murder Song.

Last night in Los Angeles at Fonogenic Studios they debuted the EP and a new video to an enthusiastic, black-clad and corseted crowd of fans from their previous collaborations (Repo! The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival film series and music). Spotted in the audience were director Darren Lynn Bousman, actor Barry Bostwick, and singer Emilie Autumn, to name a few.

Messrs. Storm and Tender played five fantastic songs, then unveiled their latest video, “Pretty Lavinia,” directed by Jake Akuna.

Starring Zdunich, Hendelman, and Alissa White-Gluz (lead vocalist for the Swedish metal band Arch Enemy), the gritty Old West-meets-steampunk styled mini-movie depicts the life and deadly times of historical outlaw Lavinia Fisher (America’s first female serial killer). “Pretty Lavinia” also features Aurelio Voltaire, a dark-cabaret icon (his appearance garnered much applause). The video is quite haunting, evoking the spirit of a Roaring 20s nickelodeon.

Stay tuned for updates at the official American Murder Song website.  Meanwhile, here are some exclusive photos and a performance video from the event.

Space Hulk: Deathwing Heralds a Glorious Bloody Future for Warhammer 40k Franchise

0
0

When THQ folded in 2013, I was crushed. The company had produced some of my favorite titles at the time, from Darksiders to Metro 2033. Chief among my beloved games was Dawn of War, and to a lesser extent their other Warhammer 40k property Space Marine. They brought the grimdark world of the 41st millennium to life, spawning my obsession that lasts to this day. When their doors closed and their titles left in an indefinite miasma, it felt like the world was conspiring to murder everything I loved.

One of the lesser known side effects of THQ’s dissolution was the opening of the Warhammer 40k franchise copyright. Prior to their closure, THQ had exclusive rights to Warhammer 40k video game adaptations. It was a deal that died with their company. Suddenly, the floodgates were open. Dozens of developers, big and small, all sought to realize their own vision of the future of eternal war.

It’s a blessing and a curse. I’ll take any excuse I can to apply chainswords and bolter fire to Eldar scum, but the products have been inconsistent. With so many companies making so many different kind of Warhammer 40k games, there’s no real quality control. It’s awkward when a great space combat game like Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is in the same family as a shitty mobile lane defense game like Storm of Vengeance. It’s even more confusing when there are multiple games based on the exact same spin-off. Enter Space Hulk.

space hulk deathwing

Originally a board game from the 90’s, Space Hulk is one of the more popular 40k variants. Taking control of a squad of Terminators, players would inch through a dilapidated “Space Hulk,” fighting off ravenous Tyranid Genestealers while trying to complete their objective. It was made into a video game in the mid 90’s, but wouldn’t see another official adaptation until 2013. Despite THQ holding the copyright for many years, fan love for the game still inspired many unofficial remakes, including the controversial Alien Assault. However, these games have all been digital remakes of the same product. Space Hulk hasn’t broken out of the turn based, board game format. Space Hulk: Deathwing sets its sights on changing that.

I first saw Space Hulk: Deathwing during last year’s E3 2015. Though a bit rough around the edges, it was rife with potential. This is the kind of game that begs to be made into a shooter. Watching the group of lumbering Terminators establish perimeters, pick their engagements, and ultimately triumph with a combination of quick thinking and devastating weaponry, I wondered why this hadn’t been done sooner. The animations and UI definitely needed a lot of work, but the fundamentals were there for a really great game.

Watching Space Hulk: Deathing again at this year’s E3 2016 felt like seeing my dog after going away for my freshman year of college. I know I’m gonna love her no matter what, but my mom might have been feeding her table scraps for a year. Lo and behold, I come home and she’s better than ever. She’s well groomed, and learned how to shake, play dead, roll over, and properly path a horde of Genestealers and cultists over variable terrain. Good girl! Daddy’s so proud!

Space Hulk: Deathwing

As someone who has put over a thousand hours into Dawn of War, don’t take this lightly when I say that Space Hulk: Deathwing is the evolution that this franchise needs. After a series of direct remakes of wildly varying quality, what Space Hulk needs is a quality reimagining. Space Marine tried to make Warhammer 40k an action shooter and fell short. Deathwing looks like it will actually pull it off.

The core of what made Space Hulk feel great was the asymmetry between the Terminators and their foes. Space Marines are humanity’s deadliest and most effective warriors, and when encased in their devastating Terminator armor are closer more walking tanks than infantry. However, being a walking heavy weapons platform comes at a price. The Terminators are slow. Like, really slow. Even turning around is an effort for these behemoths. Though mighty, so are their more nimble foes. They must use tactics and varied weapon loadouts to triumph. This feeling of weight, of mighty Terminator vs relentless foe, Space Hulk: Deathwing nails. Watching the demo, seeing how the squad would tactically pick engagements, I got the same tingle in my chest that I did when I first played Dawn of War.

Space Hulk: Deathwing

Being an FPS, there are some obvious differences between the tactical tabletop version and Deathwing. Right off the bat, the power level of Terminator vs Tyranid is much more heavily skewed towards the Terminator. It’s an FPS, so there needs to be a higher level of action to fit the genre. It’s a trivial complaint that only hardcore fans of the board game will really care about, since the feel of the game is very much still Space Hulk. Though you have plenty of tools at your disposal, ranging from your Librarian Psycher powers to an assortment of Bolters, Flamers, Devastators, and Thunderhammers, allowing yourself to get surrounded is still a sure way to get your squad killed. There’s also a greater variety of foes this time around. Genestealers are all fine and dandy, but a tactical FPS requires more variety to remain challenging. We’ve seen a Hive tyrant and some chaos troops in the demo, but I wouldn’t be surprised to face off against Lictors, Raveners, Zoanthropes, and a whole lot of other bugs.

Not content with just throwing enemies at you and calling it a day, there will be a number of other challenges to manage in Deathwing. Chief among them is the environment. Space Hulk has always been a game about tight corridors and space management, and Deathwing takes this to the next level. Large, open environments are deathtraps for the exposed Terminators, so players will have to do their best to control engagements by sealing off doorways or opening paths of escape. Be careful, because any door you open is a new avenue of attack, and every door you seal is another wall for your enemies to force your back to. Even when engagements are favorably tight, you must be aware of your firing lines. Your weapons are just as deadly to your fellow Terminator. If you send Brother Storm Shield/Power Sword to guard a hallway, make sure that he isn’t overwhelmed, because you can’t shoot through him to stop the swarm.

Space Hulk: Deathwing

There are a number of other mechanics that make this feel like a really unique, fleshed out FPS. The UI is very “Space Marine,” with tactical displays for your ammo, team, health, and armor durability. Be sure not to take too much damage in any one area, as your armor can fail. Take too much to the leg, and your movement can be slowed to even more of a crawl. Players will also have to keep an eye out for more than just enemies, as various secret rooms full of upgrades and items litter the hallways of the derelict Space Hulk.

I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a sucker for Warhammer 40k. As a fan, Space Hulk: Deathwing is the game I’ve wanted for a long time. I expect many other fans will feel the same when they first get their hands on it. More importantly, I think that this game will reach those who are still yet to be initiated into the Warhammer 40k universe. More accessible than a tabletop or complex strategy game, a tactical shooter is an excellent way for a more casual gamer to see what this world has to offer.

So how about you all? Any other Warhammer 40k fans out there? What do you think of the recent trend of 40k games? Are you excited for Deathwing? Does the move to a shooter sound exciting, or does it enrage and confuse you? Let me know below!

In an age where social media obsession literally controls people’s lives, it’s always refreshing for a horror film to come along to remind us that there’s more to our limited time on this planet than Facebook and Instagram.

The short ME2 is one such film, and believe me… after watching it, you’ll immediately log out of whichever mind-controlling site is keeping you as a slave and actually, y’know, leave the house for once.

Julia Kelly stars.

Director Alex J. Mann’s previous film, 3 Seconds, achieved over 2.5 million views so this dude is going places.

Rest in Peace: Robin Hardy – Director of The Wicker Man

When discussing influential British horror, The Wicker Man from 1973 is one film that is inevitably mentioned.  It’s with a heavy heart that we report its director, Robin Hardy, has died at the age of 86.

Per the BBC, a family friend confirmed that Hardy, born October 2, 1929, in Surrey, England, passed away yesterday, July 1st.  No cause of death was mentioned.

The Wicker Man, which stars the late Sir Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, tells the story of police sergeant Howie (Woodward), who is sent to search for a missing girl on the fictional secluded island of Summerisle and encounters several unusual residents conducting strange rituals there.

Hardy was able to complete The Wicker Tree, a sequel to The Wicker Man, in 2011 and directed only one other film, The Fantasist, from 1986.  Last year Hardy said he wanted to make a third Wicker Man film in Lee’s honor; however, sadly, it appears now that will never come to fruition.

Tributes are obviously pouring in for Hardy on social media so be sure to add your own.  We here at Dread Central send condolences to his friends and family members. Godspeed.

Find Inspiration in the S.T.A.R. [Space Traveling Alien Reject] Trailer

Are you a fan of Garbage Pail Kids, Critters, Gremlins, Fright Night, Troll, or “ALF”? If so, DefTone Pictures Studios’ new film S.T.A.R. [Space Traveling Alien Reject] should be up your alley. Curious? Check out the official trailer and some fresh stills.

S.T.A.R., now in post-production, is produced by DefTone Pictures and director Adam R. Steigert, who have also collaborated on projects such as the independent sci-fi/horror film Not Human (formally Ombis: Alien Invasion), now available on DVD/VOD, and the horror/comedy A Grim Becoming (currently on its final festival run in Canada).

Steigert helms the project as writer/director and reunites with Not Human star Richard Satterwhite as Alex Creed and A Grim Becoming co-star Aryn Fitzgerald as Marissa. The film also stars newcomer Christopher Barbis in the title role of Greg Vincent, Lori Cholewka (Lana), scream queen Nicola Fiore (Sarah), supermodel Melyssa Jade (Angela Branco), and Patrick Mallette as STAR (a combination of voicing/puppeteering). Steigert brings Steve Axtell’s amazing creature creation to life designed for the big screen; the film was all shot in stunning beautiful 4k technology.

S.T.A.R [Space Traveling Alien Reject] revolves around the once famous, award-winning writer Greg Vincent, who is now a down on his luck, struggling alcoholic. Looking for inspiration for what he hopes will be his big comeback story, Greg ventures to the small town of Metsburgh. Along with revitalizing his career, he hopes that he can sell the story to get some much needed cash to pay off his debts to crime lord Angela Branco. Enter STAR, an on-the-run alien fleeing certain death from the hideous Meroarks on his home planet of Mars.

Greg encounters this blue, oddly shaped, wise-guy alien after they find themselves hiding in the same cabin. With a deadline given by the mob and an alien race hot on STAR’s trail, who will be able to save them? Will it be Alex Creed? The star of such grindhouse films as Devon Danger vs. the Atomic Space Zombies. Or maybe Marissa? A diehard fan of those very films. Could this be the basis for the perfect story that could jump start not only Greg’s career but also his life?

DefTone has pushed the film’s release date back a bit (they were originally hoping for late in the 2nd quarter of 2016); now the plan is for a 2017 DVD/VOD release. However, they will also be screening the title in various theaters within the next few months (dates/locations tba).

The much beloved Zombie Walk that typically accompanies the San Diego Comic-Con took a bit of a break due to an unfortunate accident that took place during the 2014 event, but it’ll be back at this year’s SDCC… possibly for the last time.

You’ll find the preliminary announcement from the Zombie Walk: San Diego Facebook page below. More details are forthcoming so if you want to participate, be sure to RSVP by clicking here.

About the 2016 SDCC Zombie Walk:
That’s right… we’re baaaa-aaaaack! Just in time for our tenth* annual walk during Comic-Con week!

No pre-party, no afterparty… just shuffling through our beloved America’s Finest City with America’s Finest Zombies, during Comic-Con, for the tenth year in a row.

Exact details will be announced soon. Time may change (though there’s a 99% chance it will remain as 6PM). Exact meetup location will be announced by July 10th.

Rumor has it that the Reel Guise Cosplay Walking Dead group will be at the front of the walk this year 😉

Not so rumored… ZombieWalk has teamed up with the Flex Your Rex / Dino-Mite Fun Walk 2016, and the rexes are going to be at the very front of the zombie horde, to eat anyone who gets in our way/tries to slow the flow of zombie shambling! Both events will share a meeting location (TBA in the next week) and time (we’re 99% certain it will remain as 6PM).

This is going to get awesome… zombies may be undead, but dinosaurs are forever!!!

Best. Walk. Ever. Do NOT miss this year… it may be your last chance to shamble with America’s Finest Zombies!

*There may have been a secret ultrashort mini-walk last year for tradition’s sake (oops, did I admit that?)… so it totally counts! ;D

FrightFest 2016: Monstrous New Poster and Trailer Debut for The Creature Below

In case you missed it in Gareth’s announcement of the films screening at this year’s FrightFest in West London, The Creature Below will be having its premiere there; and in honor of the occasion, we’ve got a look at a monstrous new trailer and poster for the Lovecraftian horror from director Stewart Sparke.

From the Press Release:
The independent horror feature film The Creature Below will receive its world premiere at the Horror Channel’s FrightFest film festival in London, UK, on Saturday 27th August. In anticipation of the premiere screening, a new trailer and poster have been released for the Lovecraftian horror film.

The Creature Below is a new horror film about a young scientist whose discovery of a malevolent entity sets her on a bloody descent into the jaws of insanity. The film will introduce a terrifying new monster to the genre, and with slimy practical creature and gore effects, it promises audiences a deeply disturbing new addition to the international horror scene.

The film stars Anna Dawson as Olive, Michaela Longden as Ellie, Daniel S. Thrace as Matt, Johnny Vivash as Dara, Zach Lee as Fletcher, David Shackleton as Herbert, and Libby Watts as Mrs. Jones.

Synopsis:
During a traumatic accident on a deep-sea dive, Olive (Dawson), a gifted, young marine biologist, discovers an unearthly creature. Losing her dream job, Olive smuggles the creature home, intent on studying it in secret, unbeknownst to her devoted boyfriend, Matt (Thrace), and estranged sister, Ellie (Longden).

Plagued by gruesome nightmares, her fractured memories of what happened during the accident in the depths of the ocean begin to unravel, revealing her symbiotic bond with an eldritch horror far older and malevolent than she could possibly imagine, one which drives her to carry out its sinister will, with deadly results for those around her.

The film is the feature film debut of director Stewart Sparke and writer Paul Butler, two independent filmmakers from England looking to bring this unique British horror film to international audiences. “We want the viewer to feel the stomach-curdling dread of knowing that there are unfathomable creatures slumbering in the dark places of the world and see the consequences if we wake them,” writer Paul Butler says of the story they are telling. “Our love of monster movies was a big influence when writing the script, and I think fans of creature features will be very pleased with what we have in store for them.”

Director Stewart Sparke explains why gore fans and devotees of old school practical creature effects will find something to enjoy: “We knew that practical effects were the key to bringing our slimy monster to life in a way that would make Lovecraft proud. Buckets of blood, guts, and tentacles punctuate moments of immeasurable dread as our creature grows in size and appetite.”

For tickets to the world premiere on Saturday 27th August, visit the FrightFest website. To learn more about The Creature Below, visit the film’s official website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed.

Visit Island Red With Matt Serafini

0

Shark Week may be over, but our own Matt Serafini isn’t done with the festivities. His latest novel, Island Red, drops on Amazon today, and it promises to be required reading for horror fans.

Island Red is a fast-paced horror concoction. It’s Jaws meets Night of the Creeps meets Key Largo as the residents of a small Florida island find themselves up against much more than the ferocious frilled shark stalking the surrounding waters.

Island Red comes from indie publisher Severed Press. They’ve become a trusted name in literary “b-movie” horror in a very short amount of time. If you want creature features, zombie exploitation, or survival horror, then Severed’s probably got you covered.

Get the Kindle version of Island Red right here, or wait for the paperback, which will be available later this week. And check out the rest of Matt’s books if you haven’t gotten around to them yet.

Synopsis:
It’s a species that has been around for 80 million years. It has over 300 teeth in 25 rows to trap its prey. It has very rarely been found in depths above 160 feet, meaning the frilled shark has never posed a threat to humans. Until now…

The residents of Crystal Key, Florida, didn’t think there was anything to worry about. A missing girl with a troubled past was easy to dismiss, but that was only the beginning. When fishermen disappear and two girls are attacked on open water, everyone assumes the culprit is a predator stalking its piece of the Atlantic. But as an offseason hurricane descends and communications with the mainland are severed, Crystal Key is about to discover that terror doesn’t only come from below.

Hold your breath. Until it’s time to scream.

Earworm (Short, 2016)

earwormStarring Ernest Thomas

Directed by Tara Price

We’ve all had at one time or another that annoying, incessant ringing in our ears that seems to threaten our very sanity, but what if it got so bad that you felt as if something was the driving force behind that very pain? In Tara Price’s 5-minute short film Earworm, a man (Thomas) is awoken from a sound sleep by a painful delivery in his eardrum, worsening with every passing moment – his resolve is tested as he tries desperately to relieve himself of this maddening discomfort.

If you recognize our suffering soul as Raj from television’s “What’s Happening?” sitcom in the mid to late 70’s, give yourself a pat on the back. His performance is simple; yet, you feel his pain as he contends with whatever is burrowed deep in his aural canal with its volume set on “cripple.”

For a 5-minute quickie, it’s moderately entertaining, with nothing groundbreaking being offered or delivered – it’s simply a one-man play that is meant to unseat you from your comfort zone using a somewhat familiar scenario. Sooner or later we’ll heard the ringing… this is just a bit more immobilizing. Worth a watch if you need a reason to cram earplugs in your soundholes at night.
