Exclusive: Caroline Williams Talks Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, TCM2’s 30th Anniversary, and Blood Feast Remake

Sharknado: The 4th Awakens is almost here, folks. On July 31st, we’ll finally be able to experience the fourth entry in the flying shark franchise. To celebrate, we decided to talk to Caroline Williams, who stars in the film, and she had some interesting details to spill!

carolne williams2.jpg (1)

Dread Central: So, how did you land a role in Sharknado: The 4th Awakens?

Caroline Williams: Anthony C. Ferrante, the creator of the most popular Syfy franchise evaaaahhhhh, happens to be a big horror fan. Even more specifically, TCM2 speaks to him, and he wanted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film. And since chainsaws are the weapon of choice for slicing through Sharknado, having Stretch and the fam selling them saws is a solid natural!

DC: The general theme of Sharknado 4 seems to be that it will be bigger, louder, and more action-packed than the first three movies. Can you attest to this?

CW: Anthony loves action, and he keeps a blistering pace. I loved the chance to do the Chainsaw Dance one more time!

DC: Can you describe your character?

CW: I’m your ever lovin’ Stretch, from K-Okla in Burkburnett, Texas, Red River Rock n’ Roll!

DC: Do you get in on any of the flying shark action?

CW: The flying ‘nado takes many forms, using many substances. Believe me… Anthony Ferrante lets the ‘nadoes fly! It’s CGI, of course, so anything can happen!

DC: You starred in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, which turns 30 this year. Looking back, how do you feel about the monumental legacy that followed the film?

CW: Deeply proud and grateful to have been a part of such a vivid follow-up to a Library of Congress Original and to stand on the delicate shoulders of Marilyn Burns. The movie continues to win new fans every year. When costume contests feature 9-year-olds in full Stretch drag, spouting my lines, being chased by 12-year-old Leatherfaces, you know you’ve achieved a cultural moment!

DC: Can you talk about your experiences of working on the Blood Feast remake? Do you feel that fans of the original will have their appetites satisfied?

CW: I think fans of Herschell Gordon Lewis‘ 1963 classic will be gratified. Marcel Walz strikes a shocking tone; our cast is international, featuring a score of familiar, popular European faces, as well as Robert Rusler (my husband from Tales of Halloween’s “Sweet Tooth,” directed by Dave Parker); Sophie Monk, Australia’s leading lady; and me! It’s a crazy romp with SFX by Vancouver’s splatter master Ryan Nicholson.

DC: You’ve been in a huge number of horror film franchises, including Sharknado, TCM, Blood Feast, Halloween, Hatchet, Leprechaun, and The Stepfather. This is an achievement that very few other people can claim, so is this something that you’re particularly proud of?

CW: The fact that producers and directors found me to be a reliable reinterpreter of popular franchises makes me happy. Successive films have to hit the mark, or exceed it, and that’s a challenge directors have to meet. That I’ve been in so many popular sequels helped me make my mark. On the other hand, those sequels established my bona fides and are making me a choice for some new and upcoming originals. Stay tuned!

Sharknado: The 4th Awakens Synopsis:
SHARKNADO: THE 4th AWAKENS takes place five years after the East Coast was ravaged in last summer’s SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO! Fin (Ziering), his family, and the cosmos have been blissfully sharknado-free in the intervening years, but now sharks – and ‘nados! – are being whipped up in places (and ways) least expected. Tara Reid is also set to return as April Wexler to reveal the outcome of the fan-voted #AprilLives or #AprilDies social campaign. David Hasselhoff (as Gil Shepard) and Ryan Newman (as Claudia Shepard) will also reprise their SHARKNADO 3 roles. New additions to the SHARKNADO: THE 4TH AWAKENS cast include Gary Busey, Tommy Davidson, Imani Hakim, Cody Linley, Masiela Lusha, and Cheryl Tiegs. SHARKNADO: THE 4TH AWAKENS is a production of The Asylum. Anthony C. Ferrante returns to direct an original screenplay written by Thunder Levin.

Experience the Harsh Brutalities of Viking Life in Supernatural Action RPG Wolves of Midgard

I’m sure that there are a ton of people alive today who wish that they had existed in Viking times. I mean, here in the UK you only need to go down to your local pub on a Friday night to see big, hairy, rowdy men guzzling alcohol, wooing women, and attacking people whom they disagree with (usually those who support another football team). Just give them an axe and a horned helmet, and they’ll be in their own little Valhalla.

But as time travel has yet to be invented, video games are currently the best way for us to actually be Vikings and truly experience how they lived.

German developer and publisher Kalypso Media has announced Wolves of Midgard, a brutal new Norse RPG where you’ll have to survive a harsh and cold winter in addition to hordes of bloodthirsty mythological creatures.

From the Press Release:
Kalypso Media and Games Farm are proud and excited to present Vikings – Wolves of Midgard, a bold new IP that will pit Action RPG fanatics against the most legendary of all mythological conflicts: Ragnarok.

Legend has it that when the coldest winter descends, the Jotan will return to take their vengeance against the Gods of Asgard. The world is on the road to perdition, and the fate of Midgard hangs in the balance. But when the Fire and Frost Giants begin to merge their armies, they encounter the clan of the Ulfung – the Wolves of Midgard. Bloody, but unbowed following the destruction of their village, this notorious band of ostracized Viking warriors are determined to seize their destiny and save the world. As clan chief, you must save Midgard from complete annihilation and spearhead the charge to vanquish the fiendish creatures of the Fimbulwinter.

Launching on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Mac, and Linux in early 2017, Vikings – Wolves of Midgard will transport you to the Shores of Midgard, a world based upon the mythology and history of the Vikings. Battle the fearsome Jotan, hordes of terrifying undead monstrosities, and other myriad beasts of Ragnarok, either on your own or by teaming up with a friend via the online co-op multiplayer mode. Master mighty weapons, including sword and shield, two-handed hammers, dual-wielded axes, and swift bows. Earn blood in battle to offer in tribute to the Gods in order to acquire and enhance devastating Spell Powers and other special unlockables. As well as the regular story mode (and New Game+), players can also test their mettle in the “Trials of the Gods” – a special challenge mode that rewards the best warriors with special equipment and runes.

Features:

  • Fantasy Meets Nordic Mythology: Travel the realms of earthly Midgard, freezing Niflheim and boiling Balheim, either as a fierce Viking warrior or merciless Shieldmaiden
  • The Deadly Fimbulwinter: Withstand the deathly cold and protect yourself from exposure to nature’s wrath in order to survive
  • Tribute to the Gods: Collect blood from fallen enemies and sacrifice it at the altar to gain gifts from the Gods to enhance your powers
  • Berserker Rage: Let your anger take hold by activating Rage Mode to overwhelm your enemies in bloodthirsty combat
  • The art of combat: Perfect your skills with each weapon to unlock their true potential, including swords, bows and spell-powered canes
  • The Power of the Gods: Make the abilities of the Gods your own by equipping power-infused amulets, like the Talismans of Thor or Loki. Put your new skills to the test by competing in the Trials of the Gods to earn further rewards
  • Teamwork: Team up with a friend and journey to the Shores of Midgard together in an epic two player online co-op mode. Choose between four difficulty levels to suit your skills and talents. Do you dare attempt the unrelenting hardcore mode?
  • The Clan of Wolves: Restore and rebuild your village and lead your clan to glory. Upgrade buildings such as weaponsmith, armorer, runesmith, and mead hall to unlock more content and better equipment
  • Legendary Weapons: Gather the scattered fragments of mythical weapons and armors to take on the most fearsome creatures of the realms
  • A Class of its Own: Become even more powerful in the next life by attempting New Game+, and push your Viking warrior or Shieldmaiden to their limit
  • Destructible Environments: Utilize your surroundings by burying your foes under falling rocks or pushing them off high cliffs
  • Vikings – Wolves of Midgard will be available to play at this year’s gamescom on the Kalypso Media consumer stand (Hall 8.1 – C 40)

Vikings – Wolves of Midgard will be available in early 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. Steam users will be available to pre-purchase Vikings – Wolves of Midgard at a 15% discount shortly and will secure an exclusive pack containing an additional outfit for both male and female warriors, consisting of an additional tattoo, hairstyle, and clan symbol as well as a new beard style for male characters and tribal jewelry for female characters. Also included is a digital artbook, showcasing a range of stunning illustrations and paintings, and a digital soundtrack featuring the game’s sweeping, atmospheric musical score.

#SDCC16: Interview With Cast of Van Helsing Paints Bloody Picture of Vampire Apocalypse

0
0

I can’t help but love Syfy. While everyone is busy trying to make the next “Breaking Bad,” they are content with amnesiac space operas and magical demon slaying gunslingers. There’s something endearing about their persistent commitment to quality schlock. They know what they make, and they do a damn good job of it.

So here comes “Van Helsing,” a show that just screams Syfy. Taking place in a world ravaged by the vampire apocalypse, Vanessa Helsing wakes up from a coma to find that she is one of the last remaining humans. She has no idea how she got where she is, and her daughter is missing. She soon finds that her blood is toxic to vampires, and with a bite she can turn vampires back into humans. Take that, expectations! So she and her band of hardened survivors set off on a quest to save the world and find Vanessa’s daughter.

Tis a silly premise, but one that they hope to inject some seriousness into with compelling characters and darker themes. The vampires aren’t sleek and sexy brooding Twilight teenagers, depicting vampirism as a virus rather than something magic. They want to make vampires exist in the world, not make a world for vampires to exist in. So think less Blade and more The Omega Man.

vanhelsing-syfy-s

“Van Helsing” made an appearance at Comic-Con 2016, so I got the chance to sit with Kelly Overton (Vanessa Helsing), Jonathan Scarfe (Axel), Christopher Heyerdahl (Sam), along with Executive producers Chad Oakes, Mike Frislev, and Simon Barry. I wanted to know more about the world they were creating, and what they were hoping to accomplish with the show. First up was Kelly, who is somehow even lovelier in person. Here’s what she said drew her to the role:

Kelly: I’m lucky that there seems to be a trend with me that I get to play kickass female characters. I’m from an athletic background, sports were my first love before acting, so getting to be physical is great. It’s fun to be a badass! And honestly, I love all the fake blood. I have a lot of fun working in horror because there’s so much action and intensity to it. On set, it’s like shooting a comedy, because of all the absurd things you have to do and buy into to make it believable. People are going to love watching it for the same reasons I had so much fun making it.

She continued with how she prepared for the role:

Kelly: I know that there are a lot of female role models out there, but as an actor I tried not to think about it. I have to just focus at being good at the role. For that, I pulled from times in my own life where I had to be strong and did my best to honestly bring that to life. As far as my inspiration, I’d say mostly Ripley. But there are so many awesome female roles out there now that you could really pull from anywhere.

Kelly Overton

Executive producer Simon Barry had more to say on the shows action and tone:

Simon: It’s not really a fun show, in the typical Syfy Sharknado sense. We worked hard to ground it in the real world. Still, even in that, you can have a different kind of fun. Think about Aliens. There’s real danger and threat, and in the middle of it all Bill Paxton is saying these great lines. It’s fun, but also makes the world more compelling than everyone just being steel faced and somber. We wanted to bring a spectrum of emotions and characters, throw them into real dangerous situations, and have them react their own way.

Mike Frislev had more to say on this danger:

Mike: When we did “Hell on Wheels,” there was a sign that said “Population: one less every day.” We wanted to bring that kind of intensity and danger to “Van Helsing.” No one is safe in this world. Fans are going to meet characters and say, “you can’t possibly kill them!” And they’ll be wrong. But it’s that constant sense of danger that makes the show more compelling than others like it.

Chad Oakes had more to say on why he felt people would find the show compelling:

Chad: The danger would be meaningless if we didn’t have characters you were rooting for. Pulling from our connections on shows like “Hell on Wheels,” we got together a great cast and wrote the characters in a clever puzzle. Unpacking those characters is what’s going to take you to the end.

Van Helsing Cast

From Left to Right: Simon Barry, Kelly Overton, Jonathan Sarfe, Chad Oakes, Christopher Heyerdahl, Simon Barry, Holly Hines

Speaking of cast, Jonathan Scarfe had similar sentiments:

Jonathan: I was drawn to the project because Neil LaBute initially. From their network, they pulled together this great cast with names like David Cubitt and Chris [Heyerdahl], and I just had to be a part of it. It’s just so much talent in one project. I just knew the characters would turn out unforgettable. There’s a lot you can do with vampires, but really they are just the world. In shows like The Walking Dead, it’s not about the zombies. It’s about the people in that world. That idea was integral to “Van Helsing.”

As an example of one of those great characters, Christopher Heyerdahl talked about how he approached his role as Sam, who is deaf:

Chris: I approached the role with the respect it deserves. The language of the deaf and hearing impaired is unique and beautiful, and I wanted to do my best to reflect that. Now obviously, I can’t learn the language in just four months, so it’s a work in progress, but one I’m very dedicated to. I didn’t want to just do the lines on the script, so I learned what I needed to be able to banter with Mohamad, the only other character that can understand him. I’m not sure always when I was on camera, so I don’t know exactly what got through. It’s going to be fun for people who are deaf or hearing impaired, since I’m often talking about things that I probably shouldn’t be. It’s a special extra layer just for people who can understand.

Christopher Heyerdahl

Now, I wish I could talk about “Van Helsing” without having to address the bitter, obnoxious, troll-ephant in the room. I would really like to just discuss if a vampire apocalypse show can make it in an industry inundated by zombies, or how we might be able to bring vampires back in a post-Twilight world. But no, this is the internet, so of course this will all be under the looming shadow of Van Helsing now being a girl. Nevermind that Buffy was kicking vampire ass way before Ghostbusters made everyone lose their collective minds. Getting mad that girls are taking over television isn’t a perspective I particularly respect, so I won’t go too much into the arguments. So I’ll just leave you with what Chad Oakes said about it:

Chad: We’re not trying to reproduce an old story and make it about a woman. We’ve gotten completely out of the Transylvania, pitchfork and torch kind of “Van Helsing” story. We really only use the lineage as mythos. We’re not replacing anyone or anything. “Van Helsing” is just a name, it is a person, and person by default doesn’t mean a man. Her being a woman contributes to the story in a meaningful way through the loss of her daughter. For this world, she was always meant to be a woman. Getting mad because she isn’t the classic male character is missing the point.

And lo, no one was ever a dick on the internet about female characters again. I can dream, can’t I?

So how about you guys, interested in “Van Helsing?” Let me know below, and stay tuned for more Comic-Con 2016 coverage!

Rip and Tear: Revisiting the Glorious Insanity of the Doom Comic

0
0

Sometimes it takes awhile for great art to be appreciated.

Take John Carpenter’s The Thing, for instance. A remake of the classic b-movie The Thing from Another World, the 1982 version held an unrelentingly grim tone and shocking scenes of body horror.  Both critics and fans railed against the movie, and it didn’t help that it opened beside Spielberg’s warm and fuzzy E.T.

This response is unthinkable now since The Thing is considered a classic, but back then it was branded a disaster. It was only years later when people rediscovered it on video and television did opinions slowly shift.

That’s just one example out of countless others, but time is the great equaliser and work of exceptional quality will eventually rise to the surface. This brings us neatly to the Doom comic from 1996, a promotional tie-in that few read and even fewer liked. The comic was initially a free giveaway at a gaming convention, before being included in an anthology boxset from iD Software.

At first sight, the Doom comic should be easy to dismiss. After all, it was just a cheap tie-in for a game and the artwork is hardly exceptional. But wait, don’t turn away just yet, for awaiting each reader is sixteen pages of glorious insanity. It’s a plotless, excessively violent descent into madness featuring the most incredible dialogue ever crafted for a comic.

While the comic remained obscure for years after it was published, it slowly started finding a fanbase who were drawn to how unhinged it is.  Just like the game, the “story” follows Doomguy, who is portrayed as a hyper-macho, one liner spouting death machine.

Doom pic 3

The term “So Bad It’s Good” gets thrown around so much it’s nearly lost all meaning, but if it ever applied to anything it’s this comic. It’s either a sly parody of childish action fantasies or the best example of one, but in a way it doesn’t even matter. The only thing that matters is it’s delicious fun to read.

Page one has Doomguy in the midst of a Berserk rage – which Doom players will know is the power up that lets you punch monsters into red paste – and is seen ripping out a demon’s spine. His inner dialogue reads “Who’s a man and half? I’m a man and a half! A Berserker packin’ man and a half!” On the next page, he’s gripping the severed spine, his face distorted with pure fury. He mocks the dead demon with “That’s your spinal cord, baby! Dig it!” before promptly kicking down a door.

The third page – where he confronts a Cyberdemon – has sealed the comic’s place in history. He states his desire to rip the creature apart, screaming furiously “YOU ARE HUGE! THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS! RIP AND TEAR!” He tries to punch it, only to realise his power-up has worn off. Then he flees in search of a gun, while the monster just stands and laughs.

Doom pic 1

That’s just a small taste of the craziness within, and it justs keeps getting weirder from there. To the comic’s credit, it does a decent job of recreating Doom’s basic structure. The Doomguy’s quest is to find the BFG 9000, and along the way, he gradually gathers more powerful weapons; from a chainsaw to a shotgun, and all the way up to a plasma rifle. It also features a line-up of classic Doom monsters like zombies, cacodemons (or as Doomguy calls them “BIG MOUTHED FLOATING THINGIES!”) and imps.

While Doomguy in the game has no real personality to speak of, in the comic he’s an absolute gem. He’s a Frankenstein’s Monster of every beefed up eighties action hero you can think of, and his dialogue ranges from corny to downright sublime. Throughout the story he appears to be in the grip of a severe breakdown, where he switches from internal to external monologues, even narrating a change of scenery with “Wow! Now I’m in a completely different place!

The credited writers – billed as Steve “Body Bag” Behling and Michael “Splatter” Stewart – were either high off some quality stuff while writing it, or they were going for a very specific meta tone. It often draws attention to its own absurdity and dials the madness all the way up. The best example of this is the moment Doomguy falls into a pool of radioactive waste.

Doom pic 4

He climbs out and ponders who left an open-pit of waste there – which is a fair question really – before exclaiming “Now I’m radioactive! That can’t be good!” He then gives a heartfelt speech about the environment and wonders what kind of world his children, and their children, will inherit. It’s a tangent that wouldn’t look out of place in Steven Seagal’s eco-thriller On Deadly Ground, and the randomness of it only adds to the fun.

Reaction to the comic is split within the Doom fanbase, with some feeling it’s an embarrassment whilst others embrace its campiness. Surprisingly, the comic has even made an impact on the games. Brutal Doom – a mod that upped the gore to apocalyptic levels – took a few cues from it, especially in the way you can literally rip and tear enemies apart.

Doom II for the Xbox 360 named achievements after dialogue from the comic and the most recent game includes the line “Rip and tear” in the opening narration. It’s fair to say the comic has had an interesting journey, going from barely read obscurity to beloved meme even non-fans are aware of. Every day new fans are drawn to it, and grow to love it for the exact reasons they probably shouldn’t.

Doom the comic may not technically be great art, but for sheer page, to page lunacy, it’s hard to beat. If that sounds fun to you, why not give it a try right here? It’ll send your testosterone levels through the roof, but it’s worth it.

For the first time ever, Hayriders will leave the safety of their wagons to confront their Secret Society initiation on foot, closer than ever to the inhabitants of the corn maze. Hayride regulars may recognize some ghosts of Hayrides past, which will benefit them in making it to the end of their initiation.

“I feel like a kid at Christmas. Our Hayriders are going to have the time of their lives being part of our Secret Society of Halloween. We’ve just raised the bar so high on ourselves. The moment our guests enter our gates, they are members, part of our secret society, our world,” explains TTO CEO and Haunted Hayride Founder Melissa Carbone.

Fan favorite Trick or Treat will be returning in double the size this year and three times the mischief as the suburb of Hell welcomes trick or treaters to knock on their doors! ABOUT THE NEW YORK HAUNTED HAYRIDE:
Ten Thirty One Productions (TTO) is excited to announce the return of the New York Haunted Hayride coming this October. If the newly unveiled official artwork of the season is any indication, praying is what New Yorkers will certainly be doing.

New York Haunted Hayride is back bigger than ever for its second year featuring three zones with more vicious, disturbing, and haunting experiences! A higher octane horror program of ghostly apparitions, demonic possession, backwoods hillbilly country, slaying and flaying, even the good ole friendly neighborhood ice cream ripper will just get you started down a brutal ride.

The legendary House of Shadows will make its debut at the NY Haunted Hayride by hurling guests into a sea of darkness with nothing but the hands in front of their faces and a whole lot of evil lurking around them. The magical orange glow, smell of hay, and feel of fog from the Purgatory Haunted Village will give guests an antique world feel from Halloween of the olden days with physics, The Bootique, Grub Shack for grub, drinks, and some of the most eye-popping performers you’ll ever see. The famous Theater Macabre will showcase iconic scenes from legendary horror films with one little twist… the audience members are the stars.

“This year’s content is dense, gritty, and brutal. We’re growing this attraction at a faster pace than we did in Los Angeles, so I’m elated that our dark maze is going to make its debut and undoubtedly get more than a few New Yorkers’ pants soiled. DVD and Blu-ray Releases: July 26, 2016

We’re back again for another week of all things digitally scary. Hopefully you’re in a climate that isn’t as hot and humid as my native Northeast. I feel as though I’ve sweated out an entire other person in the past week.

Anyhow, back to the task at hand. There are a bunch of classics to discuss this week, so let’s get right to them.

Starting with the 1960’s, we’ve got Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic Dementia 13 restored on Blu-ray. One of our collections this week also represents the decade of peace and love with Monstrosity and Teenage Zombies.

Next up is the decade of disco and cocaine, though it would have been a lot cooler if it had just remained more like Dazed and Confused. The Thriller Killers Blu-ray delivers three early 70’s exploitation movies, loaded with a bunch of extras. Two other movies getting the Blu-ray treatment this week are 1978’s Hellhole and 1973’s The Boy Who Cried Werewolf.

The last of our classics comes to us from 1980 by way of Dr. Butcher MD (originally titled Zombie Holocaust). Whether you buy the DVD or the Blu-ray of this classic, you will have both the original Italian release and the re-edited American release.

In addition to everything above, there are a bunch of recent releases including a Stephen King double feature. We’ll see you again next week. Pleasant viewing.

What you may not know about Steve “Uncle Creepy” Barton is the fact that he has the uncanny ability to predict the not-so-distant future. I’ve seen the results myself and can attest to these strange and often unnerving occurrences. It’s as if Creepy is akin to a chubby version of The Moth Man.

Word has come our way that The Ninth Passenger has begun his spooky voyage to sea! Read on for the skinny!

From the Press Release:
308 Enterprises is pleased to announce that principal photography is set to commence on the feature film The Ninth Passenger in Vancouver, Canada. The thriller, which stars Jesse Metcalfe (“Dallas”, John Tucker Must Die); Alexia Fast (Jack Reacher); Tom Maden (“Scream: The TV Series”); Veronica Dunne (“K.C. Undercover”); Sabina Gadecki (“Entourage”); Corey Large (Heist, It Follows); David Hennessey (The Girl Who Invented Kissing); Cinta Kiehl (After the Dark); and Timothy V Murphy (The Lone Ranger), was written by Corey Large and Steve Albert and is directed by Ian Plaff, with Gary Ousdahl of Advanced Management, Issac LeFevre, and Felipe Dieppa serving as Executive Producers.

The Ninth Passenger follows a group of college students on a spontaneous midnight sea voyage that turns to horror when they drift to a dark island and are hunted by a mysterious ninth passenger.

“I am excited to be back in my hometown of Vancouver,” states producer/actor Corey Large of 308 Enterprises. “This is the first of several productions we (308 Entertainment) plan on bringing here (Vancouver). With this first-rate cast, a stellar script, and the fantastic locations, we are confident this will be a film audiences will enjoy.”

In addition to The Ninth Passenger, 308 Enterprises recently produced The Girl Who Invented Kissing, starring Abbie Cornish and Luke Wilson, as well as the upcoming features In Like Flynn and Hunted. Corey Large, head of 308 Enterprises, is best known for his work on the hit horror/thriller film It Follows, Heist, and Kid Cannabis.

Synopsis:
THE NINTH PASSENGER follows a spontaneous midnight sea voyage by a group of partying college students. There are eight people aboard the luxury yacht, owned by an evil biotechnology CEO who’s the father of one of the passengers. Another on board is a mechanic who’s quickly embroiled in a trip he’d rather not take since his job entails ulterior motives. The trip goes sideways when they drift to a dark island and both their engine and radio fail. At the same time, “something” sneaks onto the yacht — the ninth passenger.

Some of the crew go to the island looking for help but instead find that it is home to a vicious creature. Just a few make it back to the yacht, only to discover grisly havoc. In the end, two are left, and when a “rescue” boat comes, we discover that the mechanic was working for a rival company the whole time. But instead of getting paid, he and the other passenger are left for dead, drifting alone in the vast ocean… until something breaks the surface heading straight for them.

Unseen, The (2016)

0

the-unseen-2016-large-cover-1Starring Aden Young, Julia Sarah Stone, Camille Sullivan

Directed by Geoff Redknap

Screening at Fantasia 2016

Face it – how infinitely cool would it be to become empowered with the ability to become invisible? Let me correct that: I’m not sure if you could exactly refer to it as being “empowered” as much as cursed. In Geoff Redknap’s maiden-voyage film, The Unseen, it just goes to show that just because parts of you can disappear from sight, doesn’t mean the problems around you are gone as well.

Aden Young plays once promising NHL star Bob Langmore – once a potential shining possibility that could have made something out of himself, and now he’s spending his days languishing in an industrial town as a mill worker. His relationship with his family is as transparent as his own body is becoming. Ex-wife issues, daughter’s got beef with Daddy, the drugs that Bob is taking to hopefully slow this malady down aren’t working to the level he’d hoped for. Also, this isn’t the nice, tidy bandaging that was on display in The Invisible Man way back in the day – this poor soul has massive chunks missing from various parts of his person…large, bloody, gaping chunks – appetizing, huh? In the hopes of making it home before ending his existence, Bob strikes a deal with a local criminal to do a little dirty work – money’s good, but the repercussions could be problematic.

The issue here is that The Unseen certainly doesn’t present itself as a horror film, yet solidly states its presence as a heavily clouded dramatic thriller (to say it’s a thriller could also be a stretch) – yet, the human element is front and center, and if it’s good times, hugs and smiles, intertwined with a little touchy-feely family vibe, you’re going to be sadly disappointed. Unfortunately, as the movie drags on (and it DOES drag on), you’ll probably feel less inclined to sympathize with Bob’s affliction, and even become disinterested in the reconciliation of he and his family – that’s just where this film leads you, and it is a little disheartening. I’ll give a couple of happy points to the work of not only Young’s depiction of a man that’s literally trying to hold himself together, but the stellar look of his character falling to pieces – other than those mid-level pros, there’s just too many sluggish, misdirected cons here that not even the strongest Ace bandages in the world can hold together.

With Ghostbusters in theaters and the drama cooling down, there’s something new on everyone’s lips. No, not Comic-Con, (but we’ll get to that)… we’re talking about the new Netflix Original, sci-fi/horror/drama “Stranger Things.” Rather than trying to cram 8 hours of content into an hour show, we’re exploring the first 4 episodes this week and the latter half next episode.

strangerthingssafkg

Like Sergeant Harry Wells, we’re cramming it all in there! We do a brief San Diego Comic-Con wrap-up, fanboy on Castlevania, get our first glimpse at some new Cenobites, and talk about a new fuckin’ Blair Witch film and a less than exciting “The Exorcist” TV show. If that’s not enough, we explore what Bill Hicks would think about Pokemon Go, “Bates Motel” gets cancer, and we hang in the garden with The Cure.

If Little Red Riding Hood should show up with a bazooka and a bad attitude, I expect you to chin the bitch; it’s the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 77. See you next Tuesday… cunts.

The Who Goes There Podcast is available to subscribe to on iTunes right here. Not an iTunes user? You can listen on our Dread Central page. Can’t get enough of our terrible jokes? Why not creep on all of our social media? Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

Be the Living Dead Apocalypse in Zombie Night Terror

0
0

We’re all used to killing hoards of zombies in video games, but not many give us the opportunity to actually control them. Which is why Zombie Night Terror, in which armies of zombies are at your disposal, is a must buy. Grab it on Steam and have a peek at the launch trailer below.

From the Press Release:
Prepare yourself for the most thrilling night of your life! Something strange has happened and people everywhere are turning into blood thirsty walking corpses. But guess who’s the brains behind this hungry undead army? YOU! So spread this pandemic to wipe humanity off this planet. Because the only way to survive the zombie apocalypse, is to BE the apocalypse!

But the brainless undead are quite dumb… even dumber than you might expect given their lack of grey matter. Because when left to their own devises, they will just endlessly walk forward and fall into permanently deadly booby traps placed by not-so-helpless humans. So to accomplish your mission of world extermination, you will need to help guide them to their next yummy meal. Luckily you can utilize numerous special mutations to make your troops evolve and fulfil their appetite for flesh. But beware! Humans will not facilitate your dark will….they will fight to survive.

Spread terror through 40 levels and enrol more zombies into your undead army. Along the way you’ll have to solve brain tingling puzzles, and fight increasingly powerful foes that are hell-bent on staying alive. The closer you get to total world extinction, the harder survivors will fight to put you in the ground….for good.

Blood, tears, non-sexual moans, inappropriate laughter, and tons of puzzles that will literally blow your brains out… This is Zombie Night Terror!

Command a Zombie Horde: You are the brain, they are the muscles. Your zombie horde will obey your commands without any strike risk or complaints … On the downside; you can’t have any heated conversations about late night movies or cool books anymore tough!

Unique Mutation System: Having an army of deadly zombies is awesome. Having an army of mutated zombies is way better! Take advantage of our mutation system to overcome the enemy’s defences, by creating powerful new zombie types. Each has their unique power and abilities that can help you overcome different situations.

Combo System: Because you thought mutations were your only way to facilitate your meat feast, we spiced it up allowing you to combine those and see what your enemies are made of (literally). Let’s show those pesky humans how to have fun!

You are not alone: Having zombies is kind of like having a pet; it’s fun but you need to take care of them… That’s what humans are for, as they are the perfect way to keep your zombies well fed and busy. But beware! Humans are well armed and they do not appreciate the toothy company of the undead.

Contaminate: Don’t have enough company? Do you need a bigger horde? Well, just convert Humans to your cause then! You don’t necessary need to bring flowers and be charming, as a single bite right into the neck (or anywhere that pleases you) should be enough to do the trick!

Destructible Environments: In times of a zombie apocalypse, humans love to take their time playing hide and seek. However when the hunger for tasty flesh is this painful, you don’t have time for such childishness. So use the power or your horde to destroy their playground and spread terror among them… PEEKABOOM!

Art comes in many shapes, styles, and forms. Being from New York, one of those styles I’ve always appreciated has been graffiti, and the LOADS crew have outdone themselves for Alien fans by honoring the Xenomorph creator, the late H.R. Giger.

Check out the stunning artwork below, which was tagged onto a wall which the crew revisit often doing pieces on Batman, Mario, and much more.

Check out the LOADS Crew on Facebook for more artwork. In the interim drool over this masterpiece below.

Phantasm: Ravager Finally Being Released in September?

0

Before 10 Cloverfield Lane and Blair Witch surprised the hell out of us, fifth franchise installment Phantasm: Ravager similarly came out of nowhere with the promise of a film we totally weren’t expecting. But that was back in 2014, and in the two years since, we haven’t heard much about the already-shot film. So where the hell is it?!

We still don’t have a release date, but Dread reader Justin S. just tipped us off to something that we found quite interesting. Over on the Facebook page for the Monster-Mania Convention, it was just announced that Reggie Bannister had to cancel his appearance at the September/October show, and promoter Dave Hagan explained why.

Just got word today that Reggie Bannister has to postpone his appearance at MMCON35 due to the release of PHANTASM 5 in LA the same weekend as our show,” Hagan wrote, indicating that the new film will finally be hitting theaters during the weekend of September 30th.

Phantasm 5 is coming out the same weekend as MMCON35,” Hagan later clarified in a comment.

Ravager features Reggie Bannister in his decades-long pursuit of the malevolent Tall Man, and it forces him to finally confront the mysteries at the heart of the Phantasm saga. The entire original cast is back, including Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and the late Angus Scrimm, along with some great new characters.
