Neil Marshall Boards The Last Voyage of the Demeter

$

It's been over a year since last there was anything to report on the Dracula tale The Last Voyage of the Demeter, but holy cow, has some really cool news sailed on in. News that has us grinning from ear-to-ear!

According to THR, Neil Marshall, the noted horror filmmaker behind The Descent, is attached to direct the long-gestating Demeter, which is being set up at Millennium Films. The project over the years has attracted such directors as Robert Schwentke and Marcus Nispel. The flick almost left port last year with Twilight: Eclipse helmer David Slade and a cast that included Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace, but the tide turned, forcing the sails to fold.

The script, written by Season of the Witch's Bragi Schut over a decade ago, places the ship's voyage center stage in a story that (much like the original Alien) will illustrate for viewers what happens when a not-so-human passenger slaughters its transporters one-by-one.

Nope, we're not done with the TV news today, but at least this latest bit is encouraging for genre fans. Word has just broken that ABC has picked up Warner Bros. TV's spooky drama "666 Park Avenue" starring fan favorite Terry O'Quinn.

The project centers on a young couple (Rachael Taylor, Dave Annable) who accept an offer to manage one of the most historic apartment buildings in New York City. Unwittingly, they begin to experience supernatural occurrences that complicate and endanger the lives of everyone in the building. Vanessa Williams plays the coldly beautiful and sophisticated wife of the building’s owner (Terry O’Quinn).

Helena Mattsson co-stars along with Mercedes Masöhn ("The Finder") and Robert Buckley ("One Tree Hill") as fashion photographer Louise and playwright Brian, another couple who live at the ominous address. Erik Palladino ("ER", "Over There") will appear in the recurring role of Tony Demeo.

Korean movies are getting a lot of play recently so it's no surprise that yet another remake is on its way of one of their most obscure tales. Read on for the full details of just what kind of lunacy two women in separate apartments can get themselves into!

According to Variety, Moonstone Entertainment has come on to handle foreign sales for Compulsion, a thriller-tinged dark comedy shooting in Canada. The film stars Heather Graham, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kevin Dillon and Joe Mantegna. The film is being directed by Egidio Coccimiglio and shot by Vilmos Zsigmond.

Compulsion is based on the South Korean film 301 / 302 and centers of two women occupying neighboring apartments, each grappling with creeping obsessions that have begun to overtake their lives. Graham portrays a newly single chef who fantasizes about starring in her own Food Network show and employs her culinary prowess to entice and control those intimate with her. Moss plays a reclusive former child star whose battles with anorexia involve the specter of a domineering stage mother.

Compulsion is written by Floyd Byars and produced by Gary Howsam and Bill Marks. More soon!

After she made a name for herself in 2000's Ginger Snaps, we've been waiting for Katharine Isabelle to land a role that she can really sink her teeth into. Will American Mary be it? Until we find out for sure, here's the first screenshot from the film featuring her in character as Mary Mason.

Writers/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska released the still to celebrate the film making its worldwide market premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

The flick stars the aforementioned Isabelle, Paula Lindberg ("Fringe"), Antonio Cupo ("Dark Angel", "Andromeda"), David Lovgren ("Red Dwarf", "The Outer Limits"), Twan Holliday (Pathfinder), and Tristan Risk (Vancouver's Sweet Soul Burlesque).

Synopsis:
American Mary is the story of a medical student named Mary who is growing increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries, which leaves more marks on her than the so-called freakish clientele.

Be sure to hit up the American Mary Facebook page and the official Twisted Twins Productions website, where you'll find more links to the talented duo's Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Vimeo pages.

Audio Horror Series Mysteries Most Macabre, Inc., Volume 1 Now Available

If you enjoy a bit of old time audio horror now and then, you might want to check out the new horror audio series Mysteries Most Macabre, Inc., Volume 1 of which is now available from John C. Alsedek and Dana Perry-Hayes of Blue Hours Productions.

From the Press Release:
Mysteries Most Macabre, Inc., is a collection of downloadable short audio vignettes, averaging between 6 to 9 minutes in length. Set in the 1930’s, it concerns the adventures of Blake and Beatrice Ashton, a married detective team whose cases invariably take a turn for the supernatural.

“Blake & Beatrice were originally inspired by Nick & Nora Charles from the classic ‘Thin Man’ films and radio show,” notes Alsedek. “However, the characters found their own voices pretty quickly.” Blake is heir to the Ashton Cracker fortune and is described by Alsedek as “the world’s oldest ten-year-old…both aggravating and adorable.” Beatrice is the experienced private eye, daughter of a Scotland Yard detective, and a formidable woman in every respect- “sort of a proto-Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton, but in heels” jokes Perry-Hayes.

In each episode the Ashtons find themselves faced with some manner of otherworldly threat, only to deal with it with tongue-in-cheek aplomb, according to Alsedek. “There’s a lot of snappy dialogue in a Cary Grant/Kate Hepburn vein, heavies right out of B-movies, and resolutions that would have made the Marx Brothers proud.”

The voiceover work is done by Alsedek and Perry-Hayes plus the versatile veteran voice actor Daamen Krall. “Daamen’s amazing- he does the narration, then seamlessly switches gears to play whoever that episode’s guest star is,” says Perry-Hayes. Production has already begun on the next seven episodes, which will be released in early summer.

Mysteries Most Macabre, Inc., Volume 1 includes:
· ‘The Conqueror Bookworm’ (7:45)
· ‘Zeitgeist Of The Zipless Zombies’ (9:30)
· ‘Now You Don’t See ‘Em, Now You Don’t’ (8:36)
· ‘Saga Of The Shrinking Salesforce’ (6:42)
· ‘Werewolf For Art Thou?’ (6:41)
· ‘Mystery Of The Malodorous Mummies’ (7:50)
· ‘Let Me Count The Ways’ (6:11)
· Song: ‘Mysteries Most Macabre’ Theme (4:10)
Total Running Time: 57:25

Alan Robert's New Killogy Comic Features a Star-Studded Cast

$

Ever heard of a comic that uses real-life celebrities as the inspiration for its characters? That's exactly what you'll find in Alan Robert's Killogy, an off-the-wall, genre-busting mash-up of crime, dark comedy, and horror that throws three murderers into one prison cell together.

Written and illustrated by Robert (an accomplished horror comic creator, writer, illustrator, and musician), this original, four-issue mini-series kicks off in October 2012 from award-winning comics publisher IDW Publishing. Robert, creator of the hit series Crawl to Me and bassist for Life of Agony, based his characters on the likenesses of celebrities Frank Vincent (Goodfellas, Raging Bull, "The Sopranos"), Marky Ramone (formerly of The Ramones), and Brea Grant ("Heroes", "Dexter"). He explains, "I had specific ideas on what these characters should look like, and I’d constantly find myself comparing them to the stars we ended up approaching. I thought it would be a complete long shot to get them involved, but to my surprise they were all very receptive to the idea. When I was growing up, I must’ve seen Goodfellas and Raging Bull about forty times each, easy. I mean, I can still recite entire scenes by heart. The same goes for my old Ramones records. They are total classics to me. So now, to be working with some of my childhood heroes, along with Brea, on something so cool and different like this, what can I say... it’s a great honor, and at the same time it’s a bit surreal."

Synopsis:
Three strangers, all accused of murder, sit impatiently inside a dingy police holding cell waiting to be arraigned. One by one, the characters recount the events which led to their unforeseen arrests, and to their surprise, their stories are mysteriously intertwined. Each of the self-contained issues are told in stand-alone format, easy for new readers to jump in. The ironic twist endings will feel reminiscent of those found in "The Twilight Zone".

Check out a teaser video and the series' promo art below, and then hit up the MTV Geek link below for a look at the three Issue #1 covers. For more info visit the Killogy website, and follow Alan Robert on Twitter.

B-Sides: Groovin’ with the Addams Family

$

0

I can’t think of a more fitting B-Sides to run on the weekend that sees the release of another big budget horror comedy based on a 1960’s half-hour program about a ghoulish family living in a Gothic manner than this weekend’s musical selection.

Michael Jackson was originally tapped by Paramount to pen a “Thriller”-esque theme song for the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values. Then Jackson got accused of doing things more ghoulish than anything the Addams Family could ever come up with, and the song got scrapped. Paramount turned to the very popular at the time MC Hammer, who quickly whipped up the “Addams Family Groove”.

I’ve always found this song to be like a lot of MC Hammer’s music: starts off getting your blood pumping and then quickly becomes annoying and repetitive. That “Addams Family Groove” came about at the last second might explain why it appears to be less than sixty seconds of song stretched out to nearly highly repetitious four minutes.

They do what they wanna do, say what they wanna say
Live how they wanna live, play how they wanna play
Dance how they wanna dance, kick and they slap a friend
The Addams Family!

And once you’ve heard those lyrics the first time, you’ve already heard 75% of this song because you’re going to hear those lyrics repeated until you want to beg Thing to grip you by the throat and choke the life out of you.

The song still climbed to #7 on charts in the US, and the video, which boasts the film’s cast and played in movie theaters after the film, is undeniably quite the production in its own right.

Meanwhile, “Is it Scary” – the song Michael Jackson penned for the film and was in the process of shooting a video for when charges of child molestation and a stint in rehab for prescription pill addiction derailed the project – would eventually appear on his 1997 album Blood on the Dance Floor and the video completed and released as the short film Ghosts. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know the rest of the story.

Now take a few minutes to watch MC Hammer’s “Addams Family Values” music video if only to be reminded how great a loss to the world of cinema Raul Julia’s premature death truly was.

Mick Garris Begins His Invasion

Mick Garris is switching gears for his latest film and is trading in Stephen King for a group of aliens hellbent on invading our world. Personally, we'd keep King if only for his unique ability to come up with the most left field endings for his books anyone could ever imagine.

THR reports that Garris is now making his first foray into science fiction with Invasion.

It’s a bit of different direction for me,” says Garris, “but it’s great because I get to make a period movie but with a modern sensibility.

Garris described Invasion as "The Outer Limits" meets "Mad Men", a time of “men in ties and hats and when you thought you could trust the government.” Yep, those days are clearly over.

The script, by A.J. Ferrara, centers on a woman reporter trying to show a male-centric newsroom that she is more than just “boobs and a skirt,” in Garris’ words. In trying to step out of the style pages she’s been relegated to, she uncover the truth behind an alien invasion.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Your First Good Look at The Walking Dead's Michonne

For fans of The Walking Dead comics, a moment we've been waiting years for has finally arrived - our first look at the flesh and blood version of one of the most badass characters ever created by the great Robert Kirkman. Yep, we'd say the powers-that-be got it exactly right!

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, below you'll find the first official image of Danai Gurira ("Treme") embodying "the woman under the hood" known as Michonne.

In the comics Michonne is an unflinching warrior who proves to be powerful ally for Rick Grimes and the rest of the survivors. But how different will the onscreen version be? “The essence of the character — her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne — remains intact from the comics,” says Kirkman, “but like a lot of things on the show, there will be little tweaks and differences here and there. We saw that her introduction is slightly different from how it was in the comic, and her interaction with Andrea is really going to be a really cool addition to the character that I think will get television viewers up-to-speed, and they’ll get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.

Kirkman also shared with EW a bit more about the prison setting for Season 3: “It looks absolutely amazing... when people start seeing trailers and stuff for this season, I think people are just gonna be like, 'Wait, what? This is what? I can’t believe this is a TV show!' It’s really creepy, really moody; and it’s just gonna be really awesome.

Come on! You only need to vary the rules a little bit. Just break out the paintball guns and engage in all-out warfare to decide who will be deciding what to eat for the next year. Or... you could just pop in the DVD or Blu-ray. The choice is yours!

From the Press Release
Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games juggernaut will arrive on home entertainment at 12:01 A.M. on Saturday, August 18, as the first film in Lionsgate’s (NYSE: LGF) The Hunger Games franchise, which has already grossed nearly $400 million at the North American box office and is approaching $650 million at the worldwide box office, debuts on 2-disc DVD (plus digital copy), 2-disc Blu-Ray (plus digital copy), VOD and digital download with three hours of previously unavailable bonus materials in the biggest home entertainment launch in Lionsgate’s history.

The film, based on the New York Times best-selling novel from writer Suzanne Collins, achieved a remarkable four-week run as the #1 film at the North American theatrical box office, where it has already grossed $392 million, ranking as the 14th highest-grossing film of all time, and it is approaching $650 million at the worldwide box office with an early June opening slated in China.

The 2-disc Blu-ray and 2-disc DVD arrive loaded with over three hours of extensive bonus materials, including the comprehensive eight-part documentary, “The World is Watching: Making of The Hunger Games.” Other special features include a sit-down conversation with director Gary Ross as well as numerous featurettes that examine the global success of the books, the creation of the control room in the film, and the filmmakers’ motivation behind creating new scenes that were not in the book plus much more. The Blu-ray Disc set contains an additional exclusive feature, “Preparing for the Games: A Director’s Process,” which looks at the progression of taking three key scenes from the book to the screen. The Hunger Games is a must-have film that is hailed as “exciting and thought-provoking in a way few adventure dramas ever are” (New York Daily News). Fans will be able to pre-order the Blu-ray Disc and DVD starting on Friday, May 25th, for $39.99 and $30.98, respectively.

The motion picture event of the year is poised to become the home entertainment event of the year, and with a midnight launch and midnight retail events scheduled at stores around the country, we expect to replicate the same level of consumer excitement generated by the film’s theatrical debut,” said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate Executive Vice President & General Manager, Home Entertainment. “This is far and away the biggest home entertainment launch in Lionsgate’s history, and true to a theatrical marketing campaign that incorporated an unprecedented reliance on digital and traditional media alike, our home entertainment launch will involve a similarly innovative and integrated digital and packaged media rollout that we will unveil in the weeks ahead.”

Directed by Academy Award® nominee Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), The Hunger Games, starring Academy Award® nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), features an ensemble cast that includes Golden Globe® winner Donald Sutherland (Citizen X), Academy Award® nominee Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson (The People vs. Larry Flynt), Lenny Kravitz (Precious), and Emmy® nominee Elizabeth Banks (TV’s “30 Rock”). The film also stars some of the industry’s brightest up-and-coming actors such as Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Liam Hemsworth (The Expendables 2).

Set in the future, one male and one female from each of the twelve districts of the nation is forced to participate in the annual competition called The Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol’s wealthy residents. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers in her younger sister’s place to enter the games and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy when she’s pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives. • Exclusive: Katrina Bowden Enters The Asylum for Their First Theatrical Feature Don't Hold Your Breath

    $
    0
    0

If someone were to ask you if The Asylum was ever going to make a theatrically released film, you’d probably respond, “Don’t hold your breath!” Turns out Don’t Hold Your Breath will be the title of their first ever big screen bound slasher flick starring “30 Rock” beauty Katrina Bowden.

You would expect with The Asylum building a reputation producing mockbusters and outlandish “mega” movies that their first foray in big screen moviemaking would be cut from that cloth. And you would be wrong. Don’t Hold Your Breath is an original horror flick in the vein of Shocker, The Horror Show, and Fallen.

Are you familiar with the old wives' tale that you should hold your breath when passing by a cemetery lest an evil spirit rejected by both heaven and hell gets inside of you when you inhale? Someone in a carload of college kids on holiday doesn’t hold his/her breath when driving by a graveyard, allowing the spirit of a recently executed serial killer to get inside him/her to begin a spree of body-jumping carnage.

In that regard, the title Don’t Hold Your Breath doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. They should hold their breath, right? I wouldn’t be surprised if the title gets changed before its release.

Katrina Bowden (pictured below) of “30 Rock”, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and very shortly to be seen almost certainly getting eaten alive in Piranha 3DD has signed on to star. Randy Wayne of “The Lying Game” and Grizzly Park co-stars along with Gerald Webb, an Asylum regular whose work can be most recently seen in the likes of Air Collision, 2-Headed Shark Attack, and Zombie Apocalypse.

Shooting has just begun in the past week on this Asylum chiller directed by Jared Cohn, the director of The Asylum’s shockingly decent Lifetime Network thriller Born Bad, and written by Geoff Meed, who previously penned their mockbuster I Am Omega.

While Don’t Hold Your Breath is intended for the big screen, the plan is for a limited theatrical roll-out prior to its DVD/VOD release. Odds are you won’t be seeing this one at the mall multiplex. Then again, stranger things have happened. I mean, who would have ever thought The Asylum would begin making movies intended for the big screen?

Ryan Murphy Talks a Whole Lot About American Horror Story Season Two

Ryan Murphy Talks a Whole Lot About American Horror Story Season TwoSeries creator Ryan Murphy has spilled a good deal of the beans on what we can expect from Season Two of the hit FX horror show "American Horror Story", and we're here to help him clean up the first details! Read on for the latest.

The Vulture recently caught up with Murphy, who offered the following for rabid fans hungry for the skinny on the second season...

"It’s set in an institution for the criminally insane that Jessica Lange’s character runs, which is a really, really, really fun thing to do because you can write all these people locked up in it,” Murphy says of the plot. “And I guess if the first season was about infidelity, the second season is about sanity. What makes someone sane or insane? Sometimes the people you think are insane are actually the most sane of all. It’s fun to write about people who society throws away.

He continues by revealing the time period and how that translates to “real” horror: “I haven’t said this publicly, but the new season is set in the Sixties, and Chloe Sevigny, for example, plays a character who was put in an asylum because she was a woman who likes sex so her husband sends her away. At the time you were able to put people away for that. Another character is institutionalized for being a lesbian. To me there’s nothing more scary than somebody coming to you and saying they’re going to take you away and put you in a mad house and you have no legal rights and there you shall stay till the end of your days. That is a real horror. Everybody has felt people thinking, 'You’re fucking crazy.' Even somebody saying that to you is scary.”

Murphy continues, “I actually had the idea first. I knew the first season was about a very contemporary haunted house, and I knew the second season was gonna be — if we were lucky enough to be picked up — about an insane asylum done in a very different way. I pitched it in the very beginning, and FX said, 'Good. We hope the first season works ‘cause we love the second season.' I even know what the third season would be. There are very, very many different kinds of haunted houses in our culture. And there are a lot of different social topics that you can weave through that sort of prism.”

Look for more on "American Horror Story" Season Two, starring Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Adam Levine, Lizzie Brochere, Chloe Sevigny and James Cromwell, soon!
